Dear friends and family of Bishop Blanchet, With this spring edition of Brave Magazine, we are highlighting the unique contributions of the BBHS Multicultural Affairs Council (MAC) and the special ways in which our Brave community celebrates our diversity. We have profiled our upcoming 2nd annual Family Unity Night as a powerful way for everyone in our community to experience the richness of so many cultures coming together within the walls of our beloved school. I encourage you to read all about it and save the date for Family Unity Night on May 2nd.

Our fundraising success over the course of the campaign has translated into a $13 million dollar investment in our facility and programs. The planning and coordination of all these improvements would not have been possible without the hard work of our Facilities Committee. In particular, I want to acknowledge Ed Thenell ’80 as chair of the committee over these past four years. Channeling his family legacy and love for BBHS as an alum and parent, Ed was fully committed to making sure these improvements were focused on students, faculty and staff - and that our plans were on par with the high-quality, long-lasting original construction of the building.

As we moved from planning to the actual construction of these projects, our community benefited immeasurably from the ever-present commitment of Ed Foster, Director of Property and Construction for the Archdiocese of Seattle. On behalf of BBHS and Archbishop Sartain, Ed served in the pivotal role of owner’s rep, requiring his wealth of expertise and an immense time commitment tracking schedules, details, and critical decisions. With Ed’s guidance, we consistently remained within our overall project This edition also marks the official conclusion of A budgets, making the most of every dollar invested in Brave Future - the Campaign for Bishop Blanchet High this campaign. BBHS INTERNATIONAL

PROGRAM

Creating an International Family Hosting an international student is an act of giving, but we find that expanding the definition of “family” is the far greater gift. to add another member to our family since Riley is an only child. Tell us a little bit about Peter and the experience of having him join your family. Peter came to us in his second year at BBHS, so he already had been oriented to the school and to Seattle. He has been an excellent visiting student. We don’t have to worry about his academic focus, and he has been a good influence on Riley. He is independent, managing his time well and he is motivated to do well. He has been a helpful contributor to the family, doing household chores as asked and preparing his own breakfast and lunch. Has anything about this experience surprised you? The Chinese cultural focus on academics is pretty intense; more so than for most American families. There is a lot of focus on test scores and grades with the goal of getting admitted to a top college in the United States. What have been some of your favorite moments of hosting? Taking Peter on trips and showing him places in the Pacific Northwest, such as the Washington State Fair and Leavenworth and spending Thanksgiving with our extended family. We’ve also enjoyed conversations with Peter about his family and his home culture.

The Jones family began hosting for the International Program in 2016. Read on to hear about their experience What would you say to other members of the BBHS with senior Peter He from China. community thinking about hosting an international What initially inspired the decision to host a student student? in our international program? Do it! It has been such a positive experience for our This was the first time for us hosting a visiting student. family and really not much extra effort in managing The original interest came from our son, Riley (a BBHS a household. For those already part of the BBHS student at the time) and we thought it would be nice community, it’s a way to stay connected to BBHS today.

“Studying abroad is not an easy thing, but my host family brought me a lot of fun moments. Riley, my host brother, gave me so much help on my English learning. He also taught me how to ride a sledding board and shared his submarine designs. Kathy and Philip are the parents who gave me opportunities to enjoy American culture. Staying with a host family may not be as comfortable as staying in your own home, but they will always have your back when you need them, telling you you are not alone even when you are thousands miles away from home.” – Peter Kaiyuan He ’19, Guangzhou, China Consider becoming a host family to one of Bishop Blanchet’s international students! From: Liuzhou, China

From: Changchun, China

Studying at: Loughborough University, United Kingdom

Studying at: Loyola Marymount University

Majoring in: Sport Science and Coaching Favorite classes while at BBHS: Sport Medicine and Human Anatomy; I learned A LOT (such as physiology disciplines, training and recovery methods) that eventually became fundamentally helpful when I started my degree here in Loughborough. I also enjoyed all of the social studies classes – learning about how the government as well as the political systems in the US work, which I am highly interested in. On living with a host family: For me, the best part was being treated truly as a member of the family. Everyone helped each other when in need and really cared about each other.

Zoey Yuqing Gao ’16

Majoring in: Theatre Arts and Music

From: Weihai, China

Advice to new international students: You will meet lots of new friends who will encourage you to move forward in your life and will encounter challenges that will make you stronger than you already are!

Studying at: University of Washington Majoring in: Statistics, with a minor in Entrepreneurship and Dance Best part about studying at BBHS: I developed more confidence in English, communication and personal interaction. My host family still helps me! Favorite BBHS activity: The hiphop dance team. I felt the support and love. Host family memory: I really enjoyed the Nordstrom employee party in Kathleen's (host family) house and spending Thanksgiving in Spokane.

Best part of host family experience: I don’t have one specific best part and that is because they were always so kind for the two years I lived with them. They gave me support and cared about me and I worked hard to make them proud.

FROM THE EDITOR: Sophie Shen ‘21 from Shenzhen, China performs a traditional Chinese dance called “Qiān Sī Xì” (“Puppet Show”)

In February, I joined some of the members of the MAC for a casual round table conversation about why the council is important and what they are working on.

Q: Why do you think it’s important that BBHS has the MAC? Kelli Christiansen (teacher): It’s important to communicate to the wider community that we really value diversity, especially to those who may not have felt as valued in the past. Jesse McFeron (teacher): I think it’s important for our students, parents and whole community to receive the benefits of the MAC. I mean, MAC FUN last year was huge – it was a super positive meeting of good food and good people. Janah Valenzuela (Director of Diversity & International Services): Yes, it felt like there was a really great buzz about the event. It was just...immeasurable great vibes. I think it was really affirming to students who were asked to perform...for them to feel comfortable to share their culture here at school was really amazing. It’s a great example of the important role the MAC plays.

Q: Let’s talk more about MAC FUN. and felt really proud to see families who didn’t normally come to school events make it to this one. It really did feel like a unifying community event and we had a blast! Why should people reading this come to MAC FUN in May? Why would anyone miss an event with the word “fun” in it?! In all seriousness, MAC FUN is a great opportunity to engage and connect with our Blanchet families in a unique way. There will be amazing cultural performances, an awesome community cultural potluck, prizes to win, and new friendships to be made! Blanchet continues to grow in its goals to be a diverse and inclusive school and we believe this event positively supports those efforts. We hope to see you there!

K.C.: It really provided something different that we haven’t had before. Geana Nicolas ‘19: We got to see things that we just regularly don’t get to see. Rose Alokolaro (teacher): And people stayed the whole time! They didn’t just show up to show up... they really stayed and enjoyed. Katie Newman (teacher): I think it’s also really about creating these new traditions. BBHS is really steeped in its own traditions, which is great, but adding new ones that are accessible to more people is a really good thing.

K.C: This also was just purely social and community building. R.A: Yes, and there were people who kept trying to pay! They couldn’t believe it was all free! (group laughs) J.V.: And beyond the event, it’s nice to be able to say that the MAC exists. For people who are just getting to know us, it really communicates something important. Families really value knowing how deep our commitment is to offering support to students of color. K.N.: And we’re continuing to build more programming for all of our groups, like the great parent event this spring with Korrie Miller.

Q: What are your hopes and dreams for the future of the MAC? J. M.: I’d like us to continue looking at how we serve our student population in terms of educational opportunities, perhaps something like we did for parents in March. J.V.: I’d love to see students who graduated come back for events, to expand beyond our current family community to really involving our alumni. K.C.: Doing something like a speaker series would be amazing – something that could really engage the wider community, like inviting all of the other Catholic schools to participate. G.N.: Like others have said, I’d really like to see the MAC expand not just its programs but also the groups it serves. To become even bigger and more impactful than it is already.

BBHS A

BRAVE FUTURE

Historic Campaign Success! A Brave Future Campaign leadership extend their heartfelt gratitude to the BBHS community. As we turned the calendar to 2019, BBHS completed another historic chapter of our growth as a school community - the conclusion of A Brave Future Capital Campaign. The Campaign united our entire Brave Community and raised a historic $10.4 million and significant progress was made toward the three pillars of A Brave Future: deepening the community experience, enhancing the learning environment and promoting physical fitness and wellness. Bishop Blanchet has long benefited from a generous community committed to ensuring our school is the best Catholic, college-preparatory school in Seattle. The success of A Brave Future stands on the shoulders of previous campaigns that made tremendous impacts on BBHS. Two previous campaigns improved our physical plant with the additions of Ernie Rose Activities Center, the Marge Bradburn Studio Black Box Theatre, Mickey Naish Athletic Field and Haggerty Music Hall and established a strong philanthropic foundation that served as the launching point for the success of A Brave Future. Our current Strategic Plan, established in 2014, highlighted important facility improvements and program enhancements that we knew would require outside investment. Under the guidance of a consulting firm, we embarked on a feasibility study and established a vision for the most ambitious capital campaign in school history. In March 2015, the leadership phase of A Brave Future was launched with the public announcement of the largest gift Bishop Blanchet had ever received. Thanks to the generosity of our community, over the next three and a half years, 624 donors joined BBHS to make a total of over $13 million dollars of investments into our campus and programs through donations, savings and financing. Now, half way through our 10 year Strategic Plan, it is exciting to watch our entire community - especially our students - enjoying A Brave Future!

Campaign CoChair Mary Hermann Welch ’65 with Dr. Peg Haggerty, Honorary Campaign Steering Committee Member.

Dr. Peg Haggerty Dr. Peg Haggerty has been connected to Bishop Blanchet since her husband, Dr. Joe Haggerty, became principal in 1979. For four decades, Peg has remained an active member of the Brave Community, supporting Blanchet in a variety of ways, most recently as an Honorary Member of our Campaign Steering Committee. Why I supported A Brave Future: “During my late husband’s 20-year tenure at Blanchet, Joe was dedicated to building upon a solid foundation of arts programming. I am deeply committed to helping where I am able to build on his legacy and proudly support BBHS in his memory.” I was proud to make a gift to complete the remodel of the choir room.

We believe in the mission of Bishop Blanchet. We are most grateful for the education our four children received here and the long lasting friendships we have developed over the years. Blanchet is one large family!

Joe ’85 and Cheryl Pinsoneault

Jim Pinsoneault joined the Blanchet Business Office in 1965 and he, his wife, Madeline, and their children Jim ’80, Annette ’82, Joe ’85 and John ’88 have been an involved force in the Brave Community ever since. Jim served as business manager, teacher, coach, development director and vice principal throughout his time at Blanchet – he can still be spotted subbing in the wood shop at BBHS from time to time! Jim and Madeline served as honorary campaign steering committee members and Jim Jr. served on the steering committee - driving to Blanchet from Spokane for monthly meetings for over three years!

When I saw the drawings for opening up the cafeteria to the Quad I thought it was such a great idea. Bringing in the natural light with an inviting entrance will create a special gathering place. The BBHS community will enjoy this addition for years to come and we are happy to have participated.

Bishop Blanchet High School has been a blessing to our family in many ways. Faith, friends and a Catholic A Brave family through and through, the Pinsoneault Foundation are the aspects of our Blanchet Life that children aimed to work together and inspire others to stand out to us. Annette ’82 and Woody Winter We supported the campaign to honor my dad. The Quad being named after him reflects what he stands for; a sense of community at BBHS. The Quad will be a communal place where people can gather to form relationships and feel a true sense of family!

Dan & Joyce Divine Murphy ’58 Dan and Joyce Divine Murphy ’58 were one of several donors from our inaugural graduating class to support A Brave Future. Not only is Joyce a proud Brave alumna, Joyce and Dan have also had four grandchildren pass through the hallowed green halls, and hope to have several more benefit from the advancements of A Brave Future! On why they believe in Bishop Blanchet: “We gave to A Brave Future because Joyce has enjoyed countless memories and friendships since she graduated from Blanchet in 1958. We are inspired by the quality of leadership, staff and students at Blanchet and wanted to thank the school that has prepared our grandchildren for success in college.”

Scott and Michelle Rose ’88 Summers Michelle’s parents believed in the power of a Blanchet education and sent their children to BBHS. Now, Michelle and Scott are the proud parents of two Braves of their own, Anna ’19 and Claire ’21. What about BBHS inspires you? We are inspired most by the steadfast commitment BBHS shows to its core values, providing a positive place that, as its mission states, “inspires students to transform the world around them through a lifelong commitment to faith, scholarship and service.” This commitment our family sees from BBHS inspires us to want to give back so that the future is even brighter than the present.

We could not resist a request to donate to the campaign in honor of Jim Pinsoneault as he embodies the heart and soul of BBHS and everything we love about our alma mater. BBHS gave both of us an incredible foundation and we have always felt it was a cornerstone to our development!

Girls Soccer The 2018 girls soccer season was a rebuilding year for the Braves; with only four seniors on the roster, the future looks bright as a lot of younger players earned valuable experience in big Metro competitions. Despite challenges on the field, team cohesion was strong and younger players like Natalie Clouse ’22, Ella Powers ’22 and Luisa Sherwood ’22 integrated seamlessly into the program. The Braves made it to the Metro Tournament for the 8th consecutive year, led by captains Rory Knowles ’19, Amelia Tiesi ’19 and Helena Dougherty ’20. Game highlights included a pre-season win over Nathan Hale, and a season sweep of Bainbridge Island.

Girls Cross Country

Post-season honors went to Amelia Tiesi ’19 – All-Metro First Team; Natalie Clouse ’22, Helena Dougherty ’20, Bernadette Keppler ’20, Rory Knowles ’19, Claire Koehler ’21 and Emma Mulligan ’20 – AllMetro Second Team; Meg Cunningham ’21, Fiona O’Donnell ’21, Luisa Sherwood ’22 and Makayla Weston ’19 – All-Metro Honorable Mention. Girls Basketball The girls basketball team concluded its season in February with a loss in the Metro Tournament, ending the season 10-11. The Braves were led offensively most of the season by Taliyah Clark ’21 and Minnie Miller ’20. The highlight for the Braves was a last second victory against #6 ranked Seattle Prep in January. The team loses only two seniors, Anna Summers ’19 and Katie Watt ’19, who were awarded the Coaches’ Award this year, for their hard-work and leadership throughout the season. Clark was named to the 2nd Team All Metro Team by the Metro League Coaches.

The 2018 Bishop Blanchet girls cross country had a fantastic season with another great turnout and superb racing efforts and results.

Volleyball The girls volleyball team welcomed a new coaching staff this Fall. BBHS Alum, Jennifer Berard ’92 took over the program and added a great team of coaches. Senior leadership helped with the transition and hard work, drive and passion for the sport by all the girls in the program lead to a successful season. Finishing league play 5-5, varsity continued to improve daily. The team finished 5th in the Metro Tournament and spent the next week focused on what it would take to make it to the State playoffs in Yakima. Upsetting Bellevue in the district playoff to clinch a berth to State was a definite highlight of the season, with the girls playing with the confidence they needed to finish 3rd in the District Tournament. The Braves fell just short in a five set match against Snohomish in round 1 of the State Tournament and could not get past the Seattle Prep Panthers on Day 2. These girls grew as a team, played as a family and finished the season strong!

At the Metro Championship meet (hosted by Bishop Blanchet), the Braves placed 4th overall in the varsity race. In the Metro JV Championship the Braves finished 2nd to Holy Names. In addition, we had two individual top ten finishers in both the varsity race (Olivia Freeman ’21, 5th place) and in the JV Championship race (Margarita Hillon ’21, 6th place). At the Sea-King District 2 Championship meet (hosted by Bishop Blanchet), the girls cross country team qualified for the Washington State Meet by finishing 5th overall out of 12 teams. The Braves were led by Olivia Freeman ’21 to an 8th place finish. At the WIAA 3A State Championship meet, the Braves placed 4th overall out of 16 teams for a podium award. The Brave girls beat Holy Names and all of their SeaKing District teams from the week before! Olivia Freeman ’21 finished in 22nd place with a time of 19:34 while Emme Leonard ’21 placed 32nd overall. Rounding out our scoring top five were Abby Hecko ’19 (54th place), Tait Rowley ’20 (60th place) and Kate Manley ’19 (64th place). The last time the Brave girls podiumed was in 2000.

Wrestling The 2018-2019 Bishop Blanchet wrestling team was able to build a great deal of momentum heading into future seasons. This year returning and new wrestlers showed dedication to success by starting training in early September with strength and conditioning nearly every day after school until the season started midNovember. For the first time in Bishop Blanchet history, girls were allowed to join the Braves wrestling team! The girls squad consisted of a dedicated group of four girls. A highlight of the girls season included Maddy Mcsherry ’21 qualifying for the State Tournament at the end of the year. The team’s numbers this year were tremendous as the team ended the year with 17 wrestlers, 11 more wrestlers than last year! The snowstorms this February caused mayhem for post season wrestling across the state. As a result of the snowstorms and school closures, regionals this year was canceled meaning all wrestlers who placed top eight in the Metro League tournament

moved on to State. This meant that seven Bishop Blanchet wrestlers participated in the WIAA 3A State Championship. The Brave wrestling team will no doubt build upon their momentum to have a dominant next season! Boys Cross Country The 2018 Bishop Blanchet boys cross country had a fantastic season with another huge turnout. Overall, the Braves had 81 runners on the team for one of the largest teams in the state of Washington including 25 freshman boys (for a new school freshman record). At the Metro Championship meet, the Braves placed 2nd overall in the varsity race losing to Lakeside by just 14 points and pulled off a great feat by winning the Metro JV Championship over Ballard by 9 points. At the Sea-King District 2 Championship meet, the boys cross country team qualified for the Washington State Meet by finishing 5th overall out of 12 teams.

20 / BISHOP BLANCHET HIGH SCHOOL BRAVE MAGAZINE SPRING 2019

At the WIAA 3A State Championship meet, the Braves placed 6th overall out of 16 teams. The 2018 trip to the state meet marked the 50th time in school history that a boys team from Blanchet has raced at the meet (a state record). Nicky DiMartino ’20 finished in 31st place with a time of 16:30 while Michael Lewis ’20 placed 32nd overall. Nicky and Michael received 1st team honors on the 2018 All Metro Cross Country Team while Adam Flood ’20 received 2nd team honors. Ultimate Frisbee Ultimate frisbee concluded its season in February ranked 8th in the A Division. The team ended the season with a two-point loss to the Ingraham Rams, but it was an epic battle in frigid temperatures. The Braves had several seniors on the roster, who all played extremely well throughout

the season: Abby Hecko ’19, Pieran Robert ’19, Liam Tracey ’19, Cole Siebert ’19 and Thomas Parkhurst ’19. They will be missed greatly next year. Golf The varsity boys golf team finished the year with a 7-4 record. The Braves placed 6th in the Metro Championships and had two golfers (Connor Stockamp ’21 and Joe O’Connor ’21) qualify for the WIAA State Golf Championships in May at Indian Summer Golf Course. Joe earned 2nd Team All-League honors for the year. The young golf team looks to continue its success into next year with a goal of having the team qualify for the State Tournament. The varsity girls golf team finished the year with a 5-6 record. The girls team had a record turnout this year! The team had a total of eight girls (three freshmen, one sophomore and four juniors). The girls came to practice each day with a positive attitude and determination to improve. Special congratulations go out to Lauren Thomas ’22 who qualified for the District Championships this coming May at Riverbend Golf Course. Boys Basketball The boys varsity basketball team ended its season with a loss vs. Bellevue at the District tournament, the Braves first District appearance in years. The Braves finished 13-10 overall and 9-8 in Metro League play giving them an 8th place finish out of sixteen teams. Wins over Franklin and Seattle Prep were highlights of the season. A nail biter loss to O’Dea also showed the grit and toughness the team embodied.

Football

After a successful 2017 season, the football team was promoted to the top division of the Metro League for 2018. The Braves had a fantastic season, finishing 5-4 (3-2 in league) and in third place in a very competitive league. The Braves came together as brothers and overcame a schedule that featured five consecutive road games. The highlight wins of the season came in a road win at Rainier Beach and a last second field goal at Seattle Prep. The junior varsity and freshman teams also The team earned a Metro League bye and had successful seasons, in terms of both wins hosted a home playoff game for the first and losses but more importantly showing time since 2015. BBHS REFLECTION

A Reflection on a Quintessential BBHS Freshman Experience Morning Reflection & Prayer Offered on February 21, 2019 This evening, our freshmen will take part in one of the most highly anticipated Brave experiences, the freshman retreat. I remember when I was a freshman, when I didn’t know who I was or where I fit in. When preparing for the retreat, I had so many mixed feelings, some fear and nerves, others eagerness and excitement. I was delighted at the prospect of getting to know my fellow classmates, the people I’d be surrounded by for the next four years. But I was also nervous. Ysabelle Pobre ’20

I don’t really talk when I don’t have to, I’m most comfortable talking to my friends, and I had absolutely no idea who was in my group. It’s not that I’m completely opposed to talking to new people, I’m just afraid of not saying the right thing. I want to talk to talk to new people, but sometimes my fear gets in the way. I started to fear that I wasn’t going to get anything out of the frosh retreat, since I was too scared to put anything in. But, I didn’t want to ruin my experience, so I encouraged myself to see the retreat as an opportunity to break out of my shell and interact with new people. When we had small group discussions, I shared my opinion and ideas. Normally I would just listen and let everyone else do the talking. For the first time, I was talking and taking part in group conversations. In doing this, I began to feel more comfortable with the person I was. I felt less afraid of being myself, especially since everyone else was opening up as well. I was allowed to show my true colors, and I saw everyone else’s too. It’s crazy to think that now I’m a junior, and still have lasting friendships from the freshman retreat. It’s thanks to my leaders, teachers and fellow group members that made it so memorable to me. It’s very important, whether we’re freshmen, seniors, or anything in between, to be open and friendly to everyone we talk to. Although we never know how someone else is feeling, chances are they’re just like us. If we put our phones down, look at each other in the eye and listen intently to each other, we are the given the opportunity to truly see each other, and build relationships. We have to be able to trust in each other to be comfortable in our own skin.

Now let us a pray a prayer by St. Thérèse of Lisieux and St. Teresa of Avila. May today there be peace within. May you trust God that you are exactly where you are meant to be. May you not forget the infinite possibilities that are born of faith. May you use those gifts that you have received, and pass on the love that has been given to you. May you be confident knowing you are a child of God. Let this presence settle into your bones, and allow your soul the freedom to sing, dance, praise and love. It is there for each and every one of us.
