“Blanchet has been around for almost 65 years and while we have seen educational methods changing with the times and updated facilities along the way, we have always maintained a focus on the student – meeting them where they are and encouraging them to become all that they can be. That’s why it’s so gratifying to see the results of this Campaign come together. Every part – from the technology in the classrooms to the beautiful new commons – has been rooted in the student experience.” – Mary (Hermann) Welch ’65, A Brave Future Co-Chair

Dear friends and families of Bishop Blanchet High School, We are pleased to share with you the Bishop Blanchet High School Annual Report, which covers school activities and achievements from July 1, 2017 through June 30, 2018. This report gives us the opportunity to reflect upon the success of the past year and highlight the positive impact of your investments on the lives of the young men and women we serve each day. As you will see, we ended the fiscal year ahead of our budget thanks to a strong year of fundraising and continued the solid growth of our endowments. As we moved through the third year of A Brave Future: The Capital Campaign for Bishop Blanchet, we continued to be blessed with incredible levels of generosity, enabling us to expand the cafeteria into our new Norcliffe Student Commons. We also installed new SMART TV displays in every classroom and updated our choir room with professional level features. In this issue, we are excited to share how the student experience is impacted by these amazing new features of our school. Whether our students are engaging in class through interactive SMART TV displays or enjoying the flood of natural light as they get a snack at the new Brave Cafe, they are living their way into the Brave Future we outlined as our goal years ago. We hope you enjoy this publication and invite you to come visit us to see our students and staff in action. We are so grateful for the energy and generosity of all our parents, alumni, past parents, grandparents, friends, faculty and staff. Your commitment to Bishop Blanchet ensures that we can continue to form the minds and hearts of the precious young men and women we are so blessed to serve. We thank you for your continued support and dedication to this Brave Family! God Bless and Go Braves! Antonio DeSapio President

TOUR OF OUR NEW SPACES 1 2 3

The expansion to the Ernie Rose Activities Center opened last fall and provides our students with state of the art training and educational space. The lobby features the school motto, “Be True. Be Kind. Be Brave! along with some of our favorite sports moments from the past several years. The new classroom in the Ernie Rose Activities Center is equipped with a SMART TV and flexible furniture to allow physical education classes the opportunity to easily move between exercise and study.

4

5

The athletic training room, featuring multiple treatment beds and rehab tools, is put to good use both by our athletes recovering from injury as well as students learning sports medicine. Set against a mural backdrop of runners at Greenlake, the cardio workout room is a key feature of a number of our physical education classes and is used for cross training by a variety of sports. This space is also used as an on-campus fitness center before and after school, adding to wellness opportunities for students, faculty and staff.

BBHS 2017-18 JIM PINSONEAULT BEYOND THE CLASSROOM

FACULTY AND STAFF AWARD

Laura (Milne) Meaux ’01 The phrase “above and beyond” is repeated among the many award nominations received in support of Laura Meaux. She is described as tireless in her efforts to create a better experience for our students while remaining approachable and available to help whenever asked. While her position of overseeing all technology would be a more than full-time job for most, Laura somehow manages to find time for what a colleague describes as “an insane number of activities and committees” and she puts her full effort into each one. From serving as cheer coach for years to moderating ASB, she makes connecting with students a priority despite the many demands of her position.

6

When it comes to her role as Director of Educational Technology, she is praised for continually working to make upgrades that improve the student learning experience and make the lives of faculty and staff easier. Most importantly, people note, is her positive attitude and good humor while balancing her many responsibilities. From organizing social events to the faculty/staff fantasy football league, she is the first to volunteer to lead activities to build community and one would be hard pressed to find a more proud or enthusiastic Brave. As one nomination form read, “What would we do without Laura Meaux?!” Thank you, Laura, for your amazing commitment to BBHS and for bringing such joy to everything you do.

The Jim Pinsoneault Beyond the Classroom Award recognizes those faculty and staff members who go the extra mile to create an extraordinary experience for our students and a welcoming community for all of our families. This year we are delighted to honor Director of Educational Technology Laura (Milne) Meaux ’01 with the staff award and English teacher Kelly Christensen with the faculty award.

Kelli Christensen It’s no surprise that the originator of our motto “Be True. Be Kind. Be Brave!” is deeply rooted to the mission of Bishop Blanchet. Kelli is known as an empathetic instructor with high expectations both for herself and her students; that rare educator who is able to challenge students while also providing them a soft place to land when they are struggling. She encourages students to think deeply and critically about the content they are learning, about themselves and about their world. This work extends beyond the classroom as she continually challenges the BBHS community to work for social justice and equity. While she serves as moderator for the diversity club, her work with minority communities is more than simply club supervision. She attends workshops, leads discussions and brings people

together to improve the quality of life for all groups on our campus. As one nomination reads, “Even among a faculty and staff replete with warm and understanding people, Kelli Christensen stands out like a lighthouse against a cloudy Seattle sky. She is indefatigable in her defense of the otherwise defenseless. Her motto of ‘Be True. Be Kind. Be Brave!’ defines the culture we seek to cultivate, while her personal advocacy for all of the members of our community – especially the most vulnerable – provides us with a shining model as to how, exactly, we might live out this motto.” Thank you, Kelli, for being such a shining light for our community. Congratulations!

BBHS ARTS

Theater Memorial Day Weekend, the Moore Theatre played host to Blanchet’s spring musical, Guys and Dolls. Comprised of 36 actors and 34 crew members, the team spent the week putting together the final parts and bringing the production to the stage. We extend a special thanks to Liz McCarthy French ’79 as she generously stepped in to direct this wonderful production. Save the date for this year’s musical! The show will run April 12th through 14th. The musical will be announced at the Spotlight Cabaret on November 17th. We are also thrilled to announce that Mr. Robert Bergin (beginning his third year as a BBHS faculty member)

10

assumed the role of Drama Director this September. In this role, Mr. Bergin will teach acting classes, serve as the moderator to the Thespian Society, help with the coordination of the Performing Arts League of Supporters (PALS), run the new summer youth theater camp, produce and direct the fall play and spring musical and help facilitate our drama program marketing efforts. Mark your calendar for more upcoming drama events: this year’s fall play is Almost, Maine with performances on November 9th through 11th. And the student-directed One-Act Festival is January 17th through 19th.

Music April was busy time for the music department. The Spring Concert, led by Gabe Glennie, Sean Richarz and Becca Cantrell, was on April 22nd in the Ernie Rose Activities Center Main Gym, featuring performances from all the music classes. Later that week, 90 students from the Vocal Ensemble, Chamber Choir, Jazz Band, Concert Band and Orchestra traveled down to Portland. They had a busy schedule with multiple performances a day, participating in clinics and workshops and attending concerts in the evening. This year’s events include the Christmas Concert on December 9th, Reno Jazz Festival in April and our Spring Concert on May 23rd.

Art On May 17th, the library hosted our annual Art Show. This event celebrated the works of art created by students throughout the year. This year’s show was especially significant as Blanchet bid farewell to Jeanne Mikesell after 35 years! Through Miksell’s dedication and hard-work with the Art Club and the many students she has taught, the Art Show was the biggest yet! We wish her the best in her retirement. We are excited to welcome Rebecca Davis to the Fine Art department starting this year! Ms. Davis was born just outside Chicago, IL (but has also lived in Dallas, TX; Bend, OR; and Greeley, CO) and called Tucson, AZ home for the last 17 years. She earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Illustration from the University of Arizona in 2009 and taught various art classes for the past five years at Mountain View High School in Tucson, AZ.

BBHS SPRING

SPORTS WRAP-UP

Baseball The varsity baseball team had another good season this spring. The Braves were a young team with just three seniors and five starting sophomores. They showed great improvement throughout the season and came just short of a State tournament appearance. Though the baseball team only had three seniors, they provided great leadership to the team. Simon Serwold ’18 was named team MVP and most inspirational teammate. Cody Dreis ’20, Luke Rican ’20, Scott Yueng ’18 and David Bremgartner ’18 earned the Scholar Athlete award. Simon Serwold ’18 and Jarek Woodward ’20 earned 2nd team All-Metro.

Greta Geivett ’18, Lily King ’19 and Jessica Segle ’18 Scholar Athletes ALL LEAGUE HONORS Kate Judy ’21, Jessica Segle ’18, and Gianna Marchese ’18 All Metro Greta Geivett ’18 Valley Division Lily King ’19 and Mari Kamemoto ’21 Honorable Mention

Softball The varsity softball team finished the 2018 season with a record of 19-7. The Braves finished second in the Valley Division with a regular season record of 13-1. The team qualified for the State tournament by defeating Holy Names in the district tournament. In the State tournament, the Braves lost to Kelso and ended their season against Gig Harbor. Our five seniors, Jessica Segle ’18, Gianna Marchese ’18, Greta Geivett ’18, Taylor Houghtaling ’18 and Mikey McLaughlin ’18 helped the team achieve the goal of reaching the State tournament. SEASON AWARDS: Mikey McLaughlin ’18 and Gianna Marchese ’18 Most Inspirational

Girls Lacrosse Girls lacrosse had an outstanding 2018 season – going 8-5 in just their second varsity season. The season was highlighted by wins over local rivals Kennedy Catholic, Garfield, Ingraham and Ballard. The team was led in scoring by sophomore Logan Gray ’20, who had 42 goals and 16 assists. Gray was also named to the AllConference team along with junior teammate Sophie Butler ’19. Freshman Fionna O’Donnell ’21 was named to Team Washington, the league’s all-star team that participated in the Women’s National Tournament in Stony Brook, NY. The team was captained by junior attack

Molly Olney ’19, junior attack Morgan DeMeulemeester ’19, and junior goaltender Lindsey Rappe ’19. At the end of the season banquet, the team honored Rayden Berge ’19 with the Most Inspirational Award and the Coaches’ Award went to Kaitlyn Crouser ’20 and Bridget Olney ’19. The team had 32 girls comprising the varsity and JV roster in 2018 and the team anticipates over 36 girls on the roster for the 2019 season. The coaching staff included fourth year head coach Anna Gustafson, and assistant coaches Scott DeMeulemeester and Tony Olney.

Boys Lacrosse The team finished 2018 with 12 wins against only three losses, narrowly missing the postseason playoffs. They have great expectations for 2019 as the squad is returning 16 varsity lettermen. Coach Snorsky believes that the returning squad may include the most talented and experienced defensive unit he has seen in his tenure as head coach. The unit comprised of Alex Oxmana ’20 in goal and defensemen Jacob Van Der Hyde ’20, Jack Burns ’20 and Connor McCallum ’20 will be making life very difficult for opposing attackmen. Midfield will be another bright spot with several athletic and versatile players led by Luke Gardner ’21 and Nick Barrett ’19. These hard working players could be game changers on both ends of the field.

The attack looks forward to the return of Forrest Snorsky ’19, Carson Keller ’21, Ethan Bernard ’20 and incoming sophomore Brock Cagnina ’21 will add more punch to the BBHS lacrosse team’s offense. Coach Bohn shared that because of their experience, the returning team will be able to absorb new players, allowing new Braves to get playing time. We look forward seeing the BBHS student body in the bleachers supporting the squad.

Track and Field The track and field season ended strong with many fantastic postseason performances. At the Metro Championship meet, the boys placed 2nd as a team and the girls 7th. Winning both Metro and district individual championships were Christopher Frost ’19 in the 110 high hurdles and Scott Rickels ’18 in the shot put. Ella Haskins ’21 was district champ in the Javelin as was Jillese Bush ’18 in the shot put. The Braves had nine athletes qualify for State in 11 events. The boys 4x1 relay also set the school record.

Boys Soccer Your Braves boys soccer team had a successful 2018 spring season making it to the competitive metro playoffs. The unit knocked off higher seeded Nathan Hale in the first round and reached the quarter finals of the tournament. Many teams in the league had rosters full of upperclassmen, but that didn’t intimidate the Braves. The team will return a majority of the 2018 roster this spring and has their eyes on being a top team in Metro. Three players from the 2018 roster also received All-League Metro honors:

Captains for the 2019 spring season will be McCoy Hennes ’19 and Liam Tracey ’19. Braves soccer looks forward to playing in new gold uniform kits and seeing everyone cheer them on. Go Braves!

Tennis The 2018 Bishop Blanchet boys and girls tennis teams had a fantastic season and excellent turnouts. The varsity boys team had six graduating seniors from 2017 and no seniors in 2018 and finished 4th in Metro capped with a big 3-2 victory over Roosevelt. The boys have a very strong group returning for 2019 with David Ochsner ’19, Beckett Bejan ’19, Felix Shuler ’19, Jack Robinson ’19 and Eddie Shelton ’20 to name a few. The varsity girls team had a great year, finishing 3rd in Metro with a huge win over Holy Names, the 2017 State Champion. They also look to return an excellent group as well. Cameron Ferguson ’19, Mia Loveland ’19, Eliza Merriman ’19, Mia Singh ’20, Liza Roe ’20, Claire Ramquist ’20, Claire Bratrud ’21 and Claire Summers ’21 are well poised to lead a strong team this year. The boys and girls teams each received the WIAA Outstanding Scholastic Award for 2018 with a grade point average above 3.5.

Thank you for your service! The heart of a Bishop Blanchet education is the dedicated faculty and staff that serve our students. From inspiring lessons to late nights at sporting events, to making sure candy is always in fresh supply, the four individuals below have fully given of themselves professionally and personally to make BBHS feel like home for all of our families.

Jeanne Miksell Tribute by Clarice Hunter, Business/ Technology Teacher “The joy of teaching is watching a student’s face light up after she/ he has been struggling with a problem or idea but then gets that “Aha” moment when it finally gels. This makes all the effort you’ve put into working with them worth it!” These are the reflective words of Jeanne Mikesell who retired at the end of last school year. Hired at Blanchet in August of 1984 to teach freshman and sophomore theology and speech, Jeanne likely had no idea the number of different classes she would teach and the amount of projects and extracurricular activities she would oversee over the next 34 years. Most recently recognized as a visual arts teacher, most students and staff are unaware of Ms. Mikesell’s career of teaching diversity and array of talents she shared with the BBHS community. During her early years at BBHS, Jeanne was asked to develop an art/theology course for those students who had difficulty fulfilling their art requirement just added by the state. The course, Images of God in Art (now called Christian Themes in Art), was created and was one of the first co-curricular courses offered at Blanchet.

When Jeanne became Arts department co-chair in 1989, she redesigned and/or developed the fine arts classes: Basic Art, Drawing and Painting, Calligraphy, Pottery and Sculpture, Arts and Crafts, Christian Themes in Art and Independent Study in the following disciplines: Drawing, Painting, Pottery & Sculpture and Special Projects, AP Studio Art. Her numerous co-curricular activities include Speech coach as well as 12 years of supervising and running the grade-school speech tournament, her most recent being last December. For over a decade Jeanne was involved with stage crew set design, props and painting crew. In the late nineties, she worked with the Arts and Crafts classes to create gym decorations for the Auction. Also in the nineties, Jeanne worked with Earth Corp students in completing three Metro bus mural paintings. Thousands of people have admired Bishop Blanchet’s proud tradition of the main foyer holiday windows. Jeanne reconstructed and redesigned the Christmas windows then, in the 2000s, designed and constructed the Easter tridium windows we now see during the Easter season. Jeanne’s most recent pride and joy was the BBHS Art Club she started four years ago. Members who fulfill certain criteria throughout the year are eligible for membership into the National High School Art Association. Activities with this group included art night for 4-5th graders, the Memory Project, Students Rebuild Project and the annual Art Show. In June, Jeanne moved back to Iowa to spend time with her mother, siblings, and nieces and nephews. Her artistic and design talents are now at work refurbishing her “new” old house.

Pam Palasz Tribute by Nicole McCoy, VP of Academics

Pam Palasz dedicated 40 years to the Bishop Blanchet community. She began her Bishop Blanchet career as an English teacher, then in 1980 she became a counselor where she spent most of her time. Pam was instrumental in starting the college counseling program. As a counselor, Pam recognized the importance of becoming involved in the college admissions community so she became a College Board representative and served on the NACAC College Fair Committee as well as the University of Washington’s Counselor Advisory Board. Pam’s community involvement helped bring college admissions representatives to Bishop Blanchet and we currently have well over 100 colleges visit campus each year. In addition to her college counseling work, Pam had a passion for working with students who face academic challenges. In the 1980’s, Pam started the first program for students with disabilities where she advocated for students to receive accommodations including the creation of formal learning plans. Passionate about understanding how students learn, Pam spent a great deal of time taking courses on Learning and the Brain through the University of Washington and worked to educate the faculty. Pam was instrumental in establishing the foundation for the counseling program and we are grateful for the contributions she made. Prior to retirement, Pam returned to the classroom, just as she started her career teaching English and Academic Support. As a teacher, Pam wanted students not only to succeed, but to learn how to study efficiently. She taught study strategies to her students, focused on knowing their learning style, and integrating their individual learning styles into their core subjects.

Thank you for all you have been to the students at Bishop Blanchet over so many years as you have listened, advised, counseled, taught and led by example as an educator who gives from the heart and cares about the success of your students.

Sensei Midori Watanabe – Eimen Tribute by Chuck Bocian ’73, VP of Activities In Sensei Watanabe’s 25 years of service at BBHS, she spent the first four years splitting her time between Blanchet and Ingraham HS. Midori recalls having only a short time to get between schools. She had to eat her lunch on the way, find the quickest route, avoid traffic lights and speeding tickets in order to arrive on time to teach the Braves! She was tasked with introducing the Japanese language and culture to our students. As the first and only Japanese instructor in the history of the school, she had the honor of beginning at the ground floor. After her successful initial years and as student interest grew, Japanese 3 and 4 were added to the curriculum. During her tenure, she served as the advisor for the Japanese club, which introduced Japanese week and set the bar high for all the additional language clubs when it came to decorating the halls and center staircase, announcements teaching the community about the culture and (my favorite!), Teriyaki lunch. Additionally, Sensei began the “GO” Club dedicated to enhancing the students experience by teaching the students and teachers how to play the Chinese Board game, “GO.” One of the kindest and gentlest teachers in the school, Midori’s classroom was a model of calm but intense

B I S H O P B L A N C H E T H I G H S C H O O L 2 0 1 7/ 2 0 1 8 A N N UA L R E P O R T

learning. Students were immersed in the use of the language from bell to bell. They were encouraged to explore the culture and to share their knowledge and skill with others. Her students were always quick to comment on how much they learned from her and how kind she was at all times. Midori was always willing to work extra duties when asked, going above and beyond the requirements expected of her. She was a consistent chaperone for dances and was always present at the fall play and helped to take tickets and supervise those in attendance. We will miss Midori and her gentle soul. She will be remembered fondly by faculty and students alike. We wish her well as she transitions to her next role in life! We thank her for all her years of dedication to the Braves and for her contribution to making Blanchet a better community.

Diane Valach Tribute by Kelli Christensen, English Teacher What makes a teacher great? For Diane Valach, the magic recipe appears to be a unique mixture of humor, humility and a passion for teaching. Her colleagues know this about her, and clearly her students do too. Ms. Valach’s retirement in June closes the book (pun intended) on her distinguished career at Bishop Blanchet. In her 26 years as an English teacher, Diane fostered a genuine love for literature and writing in her students. Between her famed House on Mango Street project with freshmen, her notoriously tough junior honors class and

her advisorship of the school’s literary arts magazine (Voices), Diane nurtured many a young poet in her time at Blanchet. Highlights from her students: Diane’s American author project - Diane spent countless hours helping students prepare to teach a class on their chosen authors. A rigorous assignment, students and colleagues alike marveled at the results. Students went to great lengths to transform her classroom into a different world that somehow related to the author. There were food, games, activities and excitement in these presentations. Not surprising then, that former students rattled off some of these authors in talking about Diane. Caroline (Milne) Gaskill ’99 remembers Alice Walker as her author. Curtis Leighton ’02 named Flannery O’Connor, Walt Whitman and F. Scott Fitzgerald among his favorites. Diane’s sense of humor - Curtis Leighton ’02, Libby Bassett ’00 and Peter Berberian ’02 all touched on their shared sense of humor with Diane. In all three cases, there was a noticeable twinkle in their eyes as they recalled inside jokes and ridiculous humor “way back when.” To this day Diane’s humor is charming and disarming. She doesn’t take herself too seriously and people love that about her. Diane’s example as a role model and inspiration - Whether for her strength and courage in facing a brain tumor early in her career, or her dedication to her work and to serving her students with love and compassion, the mention of Diane’s name provokes a kind of reverence and respect reserved specially for an exceptional teacher. Peter Berberian captured this well when he spoke about the lessons Diane imparted and how they have stayed with him and helped him as a father and a human being. These same sentiments are true for Diane’s colleagues at Bishop Blanchet. Despite a remarkable career, if you ask her friends and colleagues to describe her, two words usually cross their lips: kind and genuine. Thank you, Diane - for modeling what it means to be a great teacher and friend. (Don’t forget to keep that pot of coffee ready for visitors!)

The Class of 1978 gathered together off campus and celebrated with a imitation “Rooter Bus” for photos and had an awesome event. On September 22nd the Class of 2008 celebrated their 10 year reunion at the Flatstick Pub in Pioneer Square.

Named Endowments An endowment is a gift that provides a stable source of economic support in perpetuity. When an endowment is established, the money becomes a permanent investment for the school, with the annual interest from that investment providing financial resources to support an area of need. An endowment offers the opportunity to leave a legacy for future students. Contributions to endowments can be made with cash, securities, property or other assets. Currently our endowments, which are often named for individual donors or their families, are established with a $50,000 minimum gift amount. The following is a list of our named endowment funds. The total balance of these endowments was $2,232,000 as of June 30, 2018.
