PIGEON WISDOM (REFLECTION GIVEN AT PREP’S MASS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT)

So [Jesus] was not able to perform any mighty deeds there, apart from curing a few sick people by laying his hands on them. He was amazed by their lack of faith. –Mark 6:5 Kent Hickey

Jesus was visiting his hometown, Nazareth. He must have been hoping for a warm reception, but that’s not what he got. Instead, the townspeople treated Jesus with suspicion, disdain; they had no faith in him. This really affected Jesus, so much so that – and these are really important words – Jesus was NOT ABLE to perform any mighty deeds there. Not that Jesus didn’t want to perform miracles, or that there weren’t any miracles to perform. But that Jesus was unable to perform them. In other words, Jesus needed people – especially their faith in him – in order to help people with mighty deeds. We don’t usually think of Jesus needing anything from us. God, after all, is all-powerful. But, God loved us so much that God lived fully as a human. Jesus. And being human meant needing other humans, which is core to who we are. In living that, Jesus was teaching us how essential it is that we rely upon one another, especially in times of need. Which reminds me of when I was sitting on my back porch this summer and a pigeon landed next to me and just stayed there. The pigeon stared at me. This made me feel uncomfortable, so I got up and moved to another chair. The pigeon followed me. I didn’t have any food, so that couldn’t have been the reason why it followed me. Then I thought, maybe it was drawn to me because I’m so pigeon-toed myself and it mistook me for kin. I looked into the pigeon’s eyes. They were WILD eyes, searching side to side and up and down. I got anxious and began wondering, “Is there such a thing as pigeon rabies?” Sure, no teeth, but that beak looked like it could draw blood. I moved again – this time quickly and to the other end of the porch. The pigeon followed me. Desperate for resolution, I cried out to Mrs. Hickey, “There’s a pigeon out here that won’t leave me alone.” When Mrs. Hickey came outside she noticed a marking that indicated it was a racing pigeon. A little more sleuthing, and an hour later a kind of pigeon-whisperer came to our house to pick up the pigeon. She explained that pigeons seek out humans when they get lost and disoriented. That is, when pigeons need help, they rely upon humans to give it to them. My friends, we are all racing pigeons here at Prep. Yes, we are fast, goal-driven, iron-willed, built for distance. Except when we’re not. Sometimes we’re grounded – disoriented, lost, looking for help. The Holy Spirit is often portrayed as a pristine white dove up in the sky. That’s not where the Holy Spirit wants to be. Think more about that pigeon on the ground, in the gray of our lives, especially when we’ve been grounded. St. Paul wrote that “the Spirit comes to the aid of our weakness.” God’s Spirit wants to live in our lives, not float above us. So don’t look to the sky. Look to each other. Because that’s where God’s Spirit can be found, especially in times when we are lost and disoriented. And with God’s Spirit residing in our hearts, my friends, we can do mighty deeds together.

O N T HE COV E R Paul Mullaly ’71 captures Pope Francis in outreach to Syrian refuges in a stylistically unprecedented painting titled super nos Misericordia Eius or Under His Mercy. Read his story on page 15.

Dear Alumni, Parents & Friends, At the beginning of the school year Principal Erin Luby challenged the Prep faculty and staff to “consider depth, not necessarily breadth,” when seeking the Magis. These words hit me like a rock. I was in the midst of finalizing stories for this issue of Panther Tracks and I was in dire need of a focus. The word REACH kept rising to the surface. It illustrates so well our alumni featured in this issue – Paul Mullally ’66 and Kirby Winfield ’92 – two men who are great examples of what can happen when you show up and say “yes” to opportunities. It also embodies Prep’s robotics program, with their commitment to the Magis that goes far beyond mechanics. Whether you REACH up, REACH in, or REACH out, the stories in this issue of Panther Tracks are examples of how one person’s REACH can unintentionally and most surprisingly extend far beyond their sight. Gratefully, Lisa Fernandez Director of Communications & Marketing lfernandez@seaprep.org

The gift that Prep has given us is the gift to be ourselves, unapologetically. Where in middle school, I was afraid to be open, to be myself, at Seattle Prep, we’ve all been given the gift of a community that welcomes the underdog, welcomes the shy kid, the nerd, the outcast, welcomes those who don’t know their worth, and sets their worlds on fire. The little things, the random acts of kindness…are what ended up impacting me the most. The little fires that we ignite within each other burn the brightest, last the longest, and create the deepest change. -Hudson Patterson ’18, excerpt from commencement address

In this past year, the messages of love and respect that we are taught in the classroom at Prep weren’t always mirrored in the media and in our nation’s leadership. Instead of sitting by and accepting the tragedy and injustice in the news, I watched my classmates march for gender equality, lead the school in a walkout to protest gun violence, and stand up for what they believe in. For t hat, I hope we are remembered.

Congratulations!

First Individual Woman Named as Distinguished Alumna

At this year’s graduation ceremony, Prep honored Jane Powers ’80 with the 2018 Distinguished Alumni Award.

8

Jane attended Prep in the late ’70s, a time of transition and sometimes turbulence, as Prep shifted from an allboys school to co-ed. So it is befitting that 28 years later, with a historic student body which is 53% female, Jane is the recipient of the 2018 Distinguished Alumni Award. Jane greatly appreciates what the Prep faculty, such as her cross-country coach, Fr. Sullivan, did during that time to make sure that girls were treated equally to boys, and enjoyed the same opportunities to excel. And, indeed, Jane and her cross-country teammates achieved great success: They were the first girls’ team in any Prep sport to win a Metro title, and the first to go to State. Jane is a second-generation graduate of Seattle Prep, and 1985 graduate of the University of Washington, where she was on varsity crew all four years. Jane went on to a

| SEATTLE PREP PANTHER TRACKS | FALL 2018

highly successful career in real estate at Ewing and Clark, where she is known for her integrity, professionalism, and commitment to her clients. Jane is the embodiment of the “Grad at Grad” and has demonstrated consistent and enduring care for her community, most notably as a long time volunteer at the University of Washington; her parish, Immaculate Conception, and through serving in prison ministry at Monroe Correctional Complex. Prep is also one of the recipients of Jane’s generosity. She has served 20 years on the Alumni Board, where she is responsible for being the liaison between Prep and its thousands of alumni. This award is in recognition of her commitment to building on legacy and making Prep better for the next generations of Panthers.

Math Legend Retires SOME OF THE BEST TEACHERS are the ones who get a taste of a different life and then choose to return to the classroom. Norm Hardy is one of those teachers. Back in the days of the Radio Shack TRS-80, the Apple 2e, and the IBM PC, he was enjoying the lucrative rewards of being a computer programmer. For several years he worked at a local tech company writing educational software for grades K-12. But he missed the day-to-day interaction with students. “I discovered, as a computer programmer, that time had sped up. I worked very hard and then I would realize it was already Friday. That seldom happened as a teacher. I wanted to slow down the passage of time. I felt that what I was doing was not ultimately fulfilling,” says Norm. A Seattle native, Norm attended Seattle Pacific University and interned at Juanita High School in Kirkland his senior year. Norm started teaching math and coaching boys’ soccer at Seattle Christian School at the age of 22, and later got his Masters of Education degree from Seattle Pacific University. Norm was hired by Prep’s Fr. Tom Bunnell, S.J., in 1985 to begin his 11th year of teaching. Norm says, “In the interview, I knew I wanted to finish my career at Seattle Prep.” Over his 33 years at Prep, Norm taught the gamut of math, from basic algebra to AP Calculus BC. Norm says, “Mathematics itself may not change much over the years, but teaching methods often do. Math proficiency is more important in our world today. One of the best changes I’ve seen in math is the shift away from daily lecture mode to differentiated instruction. The traditional lecture method of the teacher writing on the blackboard (or whiteboard) drawing diagrams and walking around the classroom, while the students sit, is gone.” For the better part of the last 20 years Norm brought an inquiry-based lab approach to the math classroom. He says, “I wanted students to understand the concepts and how they come into being as opposed to me just telling them, ’here’s the formula.’ I wanted the students to think and have a better sense of the concepts.” Norm recalls the perpetual question from students, “What am I going to do with math when I grow up?” Norm smiles. “The usual answer I gave was, ’you don’t know what you are going to be doing 10 years from now. And as such don’t limit yourself by your difficulties today.’ There have been students who came back to me after graduation and

surprised me when they said what they were doing with math. They realized the growth between who they were then and who they are now.” Over the years, Norm contributed beyond his field. His legacy at Seattle Prep included coaching girls varsity soccer for four years and boys JV and third team soccer for 25 seasons with occasional Metro League responsibilities. He also started the Prep chess team and ran it and the league for nearly 10 years. “It was gratifying to watch the team improve and compete,” he says. After 43 years of teaching, 33 of those at Seattle Prep, Norm Hardy retired with words of wisdom. “It’s different when you get here [to Seattle Prep] in your 30s and leave in your 60s. At 30, you are idealistic and think you know all the answers. You don’t. You realize that if you are truly a life-long learner, you cannot sit still.” Norm is enjoying his (considerably) warmer retirement in Goodyear, Arizona, along with new wife, Paula, who he married in September. He looks forward to exploring the desert, keeping his mind active with puzzles, playing the guitar, bicycling, coffee-roasting, fiddling in the kitchen, Mariner spring training, being active in Christian service, and whatever else of interest comes along. Norm says, “I will always be very grateful for the love and support of Seattle Prep for 33 years. Great colleagues and great administrators over the years allowed me the freedom to take risks and become a better teacher and person. Serving others is more important now than it ever was.” But he adds, “It is clear to me now that retirement is greatly underrated!”

PREP’S RON ZIPSE RETIRES

HIS OFFICE WALLS ARE LINED WITH photos of roads. Roads meandering in the woods. Roads flanked by oceans. Roads intersecting national parks. Ron Zipse, Seattle Prep teacher and counselor, is without a doubt a man who takes solace in the journey. His retirement this year, after 45 years of teaching, is the finish to a rich career—a road well-traveled. A cradle Catholic, Ron attended St. Gabriel School in San Francisco, which at the time was known as the largest Catholic elementary school west of the Mississippi: three sections of each grade, fifty kids in a class. When the time came to select a high school, Ron wanted to attend the Jesuit school in San Francisco, but his father, a staunch Christian Brothers supporter, had other ideas. Ron eventually enrolled as a freshman at Sacred Heart High School (now Sacred Heart Cathedral Preparatory). So it wasn’t until he became a student at Santa Clara University that Ron had his first and life-changing interaction with the Jesuits. In his junior and senior years at Santa Clara, Ron lived and worked as a dorm prefect at Bellarmine Prep, the all-boys Jesuit high school in San Jose. “I got to know Fr. Dave Klein in the residence. He was my doorway into teaching,” Ron says. Immediately after graduation Ron took a faculty position at Bellarmine teaching math and literature. “I think the whole idea of service to others resonates with me,” he says. “That’s why I’ve dedicated my life to teaching. I feel like I have a role to help others and I’ve been directed this way through God.” An avid outdoors enthusiast, Ron and his wife found their compass pointing north after a series of skiing and hiking trips to Washington. In 1981, he heard about a job opening at the newly formed Eastside Catholic High School, located in downtown Bellevue. He applied, got the job and moved to the Seattle area. Ron says the school culture was very “Jesuit-like” because most of the teachers at the time were former Jesuits (including principal Dick Ellis) or had previously taught at a Jesuit school. Ron spent nine years at Eastside Catholic. Along the way he formed a strong friendship with Kathy Krueger, a Prep parent and counselor. Their children had attended the same preschool, same grade school and ultimately the same high school, Prep. “Kathy was working as the head of the Counseling Department at Prep and she said, ’Why don’t you check out our school?’ That was 1990. I got the job and it’s been home ever since,” says Ron. Ron served as a counselor at Seattle Prep for 28 years. But he has also played a key role in the classroom as a math

teacher. “I’ve always kept my feet in the classroom because I think that it’s important to have that connection with kids,” Ron says. “I think they see me in a different light, rather than being a counselor in an isolated office.” Ron also believes that his classroom presence gave him more credibility with faculty and made for a richer connection. In his tenure at Prep, Ron cites diversity as one of the biggest changes. He credits former teacher Anne Gleason with starting a movement that sought to diversify the Prep student population. He served on the Diversity Committee in its early years and has high praise for Diversity Director Deino Scott ’74 and Regina Melonson, Director of the Learning Resource Center. “It was a tough go at first for Regina,” Ron says, “it was 1994, and not everyone was on board. She had to turn the whole culture around and help people understand that kids learn differently and have different abilities. But this diversity has made Prep a much more welcoming place than when I first started here.” Unlike some of his colleagues who have spearheaded a new initiative or program, Ron’s greatest achievement is knowing that he has counseled many students to find peace in some very difficult times. “To help a student find the answers within themselves IS success,” he says. Ron says, “My best memories are of the kids who have walked through my class, and those who made it across the stage, who didn’t always look like they were going to make it.” And then, there is always his fifteen minutes of fame when he was cast as Jacob in the school musical, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. A fan of the arts, Ron often runs into his “musical son,” Joseph (or RJ Tancioco ’95), now a director, at many of the theaters around town. Even in his early days at Santa Clara, Ron always knew that teaching was going to be a lifetime commitment. He says, “I had no idea how long my career would be, but I always saw myself as a teacher. I felt teaching was my calling. Teaching is a commitment I made to my community. The Jesuits helped me formulate that. And I have been truly blessed to work so many years in Jesuit schools.” In his retirement Ron plans on spending time with his other loves: playing guitar, long hikes, cooking, singing in his church choir, traveling in the “off season” (Italy calls), and his daughters, Alicia ’03 and Emily ’07.

For three years, Ron and I co-led our NATURAL HELPERS training at the Jesuit Warm Beach cabin. It was a peer counseling program, training students to help other teens deal with their problems. We must have had over 45 students in a space made for 20, with one bathroom. I knew then, and I know now, that Ron is a great team player! He is the type of colleague who goes the extra mile to help someone. He is empathetic, kind-hearted and compassionate. He has graced Prep with his amazing voice in over ten Olympic Week karaoke performances, over five Coffee Houses, over 20 Faculty Retreats, and 30+ all-school masses! He is exceptionally talented as a guitarist and soloist. He has given up weekend time for our Community Ministry retreat programs. He has been a constant presence each year as a speaker/ counselor in Junior KAIROS. He facilitated the “stereotype exercise” with the Sophomore Urban Plunge and he has had several roles facilitating the Freshman Retreat. Prep has been blessed by every one of his years here. – Jolene Boyle, Counselor & Community Minister

Five miles west of the Nile River, the red-hued FINDING HIS WAY Paul’s artistic gift had simmered for years. As a young desert gives way to the Great Pyramids of Giza child he kept himself busy copying newspaper comics and – the lone ancient wonder still in existence. It creating pencil sketches. Computers didn’t exist, there was is here where Paul Mullally ’66 unknowingly no internet, and with a family of 12 children little time or money for art classes. Paul struggled academically at began his 42-year journey to the Vatican. Seattle Prep. “I was so lost by my senior year that I was In 2016 Paul Mullally received a call from Fr. Bill Watson, S.J., a family friend and faculty member at Seattle University (SU). “Paul, how would you like to paint a portrait of Pope Francis,” he asked. “I went numb,” Paul says; “how could I refuse?” Within the week Fr. Watson, S.J., showed up at Paul’s door with Fr. David Nazar, S.J., Director of the Pontificio Instituto Orientale, and Fr. Alan Fogarty, S.J., President of the Gregorian University Foundation. The Jesuit priests had flown 5,600 miles from Rome to see if Paul was the real deal. The commission was to honor the Pontificio’s Centennial, and what better way to celebrate than with a portrait of the newly-ordained Pope. The search for an artist had led them to Seattle. Years earlier, Paul had created a painting of St. Therese of Lisieux for his father. Upon his father’s death the painting was willed to Fr. Watson, S.J., and eventually found its way into the private quarters of Pope Francis, also an avid devotee of St. Therese. These papal connections to the Mullally name would continue with the later appointment of Fr. Watson, S.J., to the Pontificio’s board. Paul suggested an unorthodox idea when he heard that the mission of the organization was to reach out and help the Eastern Churches – rather than paint a traditional portrait, he could depict the Pope administering to Syrian refugees, a nod to the recent Papal visit to Greece amidst the refugee crisis. They loved the idea.

just memorizing everything and understanding nothing,” he says. He flunked a class his last quarter and graduated with a 1.9 GPA. The Vietnam War was calling, and Paul assumed he would get drafted. But that summer, divine intervention walked through the family’s door in the form of Fr. John Fitterer, S.J., the president of SU at the time. He persuaded Paul to go to summer school and apply to college. Paul raised his grades and got accepted to SU. He continued to struggle until he found the art department. He hit his stride, raised his GPA, and finally graduated with a BFA in fine art. Paul spent the next nine months traveling the world, backpack and watercolors in tow. He hitchhiked across North Africa, making his way through Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, and Nepal, soaking up inspiration. He crossed the Egyptian border to sit atop the largest pyramid in Giza, and sketched the vast, foreign landscape. Later, he sought out Afghanistan’s Hindu Kush mountains, where he climbed the inner stairwell of the 1,700-year-old Buddha of Bamiyan. After summiting the 170-foot rock statue, he sat down on the valley floor and painted for hours. Years later, in 2001, that Buddha was blown up by the Taliban. Remembered on paper, Paul’s travels produced a series of 25 watercolors and served as an endless reservoir for future paintings. A 26-year-old Paul returned to Seattle with a desire to paint professionally but felt he lacked technical training.

Madonna Angelica was originally painted as a tribute to Paul’s father, but eventually made its way to the Western Rendezvous of Art, an established Montana art show. The piece sold for $45,000 to a local Catholic family who bought it as a present to their mother. Upon her death in 2005, the painting was donated to Carroll College. The larger-than-life painting hangs in the foyer of the school’s Fortin Science Center, measuring seven feet high and four feet wide. The image is of the Virgin Mary as a young woman after receiving her calling from God to be the mother of Jesus.

He spent the next five years at various painting schools, including three years at the Art Students League in New York and the Salmagundi Club, and two years at the Palette and Chisel Academy of Fine Arts in Chicago. Paul hit his stride as a painter. He says, “my eyes were opened, and this experience left no doubt about my calling in life.”

THE LONG ROAD

Paul is an accomplished painter with his work shown at invitationals and museums across the country. His paintings have received numerous awards, and he is a Master Signature Member of the Oil Painters of America and a Fellow in the American Society of Marine Artists. In 2012, Paul was invited by China’s Ministry of Culture to participate in the London Olympics’ Creative Cities Collection art exhibit. Paul was selected to represent the United States at the exhibit’s opening ceremony. But none of this could prepare him for the commission of a lifetime. Paul spent the better part of a year painting the commissioned portrait of Pope Francis. BBC art documentaries provided ongoing inspiration and emotional support. “The Catholic Church was such a big part of history, especially the Renaissance, with all those artists painting papal things,” Paul says. Paul realized there is a daily tedium that goes along with painting that you just have to muddle through. Ironically, religious paintings are not indicative of Paul’s body of work. Sedate landscapes and regal portraits are

Our new mission statement is precisely about going out where there is suffering in the countries of the Eastern Churches and educating our people with this in mind. Thus, your painting becomes a prophetic statement for what we are aiming to do for the next 100 years.” – Fr. David Nazar, S.J., Director of the Pontificio Instituto Orientale more his style. Prior to the Pope’s portrait, the two religious paintings he produced were at the request of his father, a deeply devoted Catholic. But it’s these religiously themed paintings – of St. Therese and the Madonna – that brought him acclaim, and ultimately the opportunity with the Vatican.

A SURREAL END In June 2017 Paul finished the painting. That fall he and his family flew to Rome for the 100th anniversary celebration of the Pontifical Oriental Institute, where the painting would be unveiled for the Pope. Anticipation was in the air, not only for the unveiling but also for the answer to a unique request. Paul had asked a special favor of the Vatican. His daughters had yet to receive their First Communion, so Paul thought, what better place to do that than in Rome. And, who better to perform it than the Pope. It was worth a shot. Vatican official told him most likely “no,” but “Francis is just the type of Pope who might.” The painting was unveiled in the historical library of the Pontificio Instituto Orientale, to a handful of dignitaries and supporters. In what Paul recalls as “one of the biggest honors of his life,” he finally came face-to-face with Pope Francis. “It was the culmination of a year of pentup emotion,” Paul says, “and honestly, I can’t remember the words we exchanged as we were holding hands. The feeling was too great.” What Paul does remember is that the pressure and commitment had paid off. “When I saw the expression on the Pope’s face when he looked at the painting I knew I had captured him. I then looked at the painting and I looked at his face and I said to myself, ’Yes, I got it right!’” And as far as that special request? The Pope did not disappoint. Annelise and Ise did receive their sacrament of Holy Communion that day. Turns out the Pope is a great fan of exceptions.

IF IT IS TO BE IT IS UP TO ME. If it is to be it is up to me. It’s a directive right out of Prep football coach Rollie Robbins’ playbook. And it’s something that Kirby Winfield ’92 has never forgotten. Kirby’s resume is notable. A successful startup operator and angel investor, his Midas touch with companies runs the gamut – Go2Net, Marchex, AdXpose, Dwellable, Ascend.vc, and the Paul Allen Institute for Artificial Intelligence, just to name a few – and has brought him considerable fame and fortune. Behind Kirby’s business success is an English major from Middlebury, a small liberal-arts college in New England. Kirby credits this unusual career path to Susan Kennedy, a former Prep English teacher. “Ms. Kennedy was an amazing teacher who taught me to push myself to pursue writing. She gave me the confidence to look at colleges for the program rather than the name or location. I have had a career where communications has played a major role in what I’ve accomplished. A lot of that is due to Ms. Kennedy.” No one is more surprised than Kirby about where his life’s choices have taken him. “I thought I would work in advertising agencies in Manhattan where I would write advertising copy, wear gray suits, and have three-martini lunches,” he says. And for a while it looked like that might just happen. Kirby graduated with a degree in creative writing, and began work at a New York public relations firm. But a random call from a friend, the older brother of close friend Megan (Keister) Schmidt ’92, lured him back to Seattle to work at his startup internet company. Kirby never looked back. “I have four college classmates who have published novels, two of them best-sellers, and my friends

Kirby and daughter Kate have set their sights on competing at the Orlando 2020 Special Olympics USA Games.

keep asking me, ’why don’t you write?’ And I tell them all I do is write. I write emails. And for the last 20 years it seems to have been going pretty well. It turns out that getting your ideas across in a convincing fashion is an incredible superpower in the business world. And it all comes from writing, reading, and thinking critically – all things that I was prepared for by Seattle Prep.” Sports also played an influential role in Kirby’s development at Prep. As a member of the Panther football team, he began his freshman year sleeping in a classroom in Adelphia Hall with 32 strangers – his new teammates. The next year, they met their formidable Coach, Hall of Famer Rollie Robbins. Kirby clearly remembers his motto: “If it is to be it is up to me.” “Coach Robbins gave you this sense that you could control your own destiny by the work that you did and the way that you approached your life,” says Kirby. “He also taught us how to represent Prep in an honorable way, but excel while we were doing it. He would say, beat the person across from you as hard as you can, knock them down on

their butt but, when the whistle blows, you pick them up and say, nice job.” Kirby and his team went on to finish in the Top 10 in the state high school football rankings two years in a row. Kirby has taken his competitive drive and many talents and channeled them into a newfound role – advocating for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. Kirby is the board chair of Special Olympics Washington, and has been working with the organization for the last five years. Special Olympics provides opportunities for four million athletes globally, and 18,000 locally in the state of Washington. Kirby’s daughter Kate is one of them. In 2009 Kate was born with Down syndrome. He says, “My wife and I found out about Kate’s condition in the delivery room. We were not prepared for the feeling you get when you have a certain set of expectations and dreams for your child and then you realize that because of her disabilities, those things might not be there.” As someone who benefited greatly from sports, Kirby says his commitment to Special Olympics “is the best and highest use of my time to help those who aren’t given those opportunities in the existing framework of scholastic competition or parks and recreation. Sports is so critical to building men and women who will go out into the world with confidence and succeed,” says Kirby, “I feel passionate about investing in that.” At Special Olympics, sports is a platform for a bigger agenda. “Our real goal is to carry forth the health, fitness, wellness and inclusion of people with intellectual disabilities into daily life – whether that’s in rural Mongolia where someone might be ostracized from their village, or Seattle where someone with a disability might not be able to play on a school soccer team,” says Kirby. With this underserved population, Kirby says their approach is to start small. Start with sports. In time the other opportunities and challenges can unfold – such as health screenings and leadership opportunities. “There is so much more we can do for the athletes and their families,” Kirby says. This summer Kirby’s hard work was rewarded when Seattle’s bid for the USA Special Olympics Games came to fruition. The live-telecast ESPN event featured 2,000 athletes from across the United States competing in various sports at a high level. “Most people don’t realize the Games are very competitive, and there are a series of qualifying levels, and you need to medal at all those levels to get to the national games,” says Kirby. “It’s a huge honor. There is a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place. The medals mean something because you have to work to

win them. To teach anyone in a disadvantaged situation that they don’t have to work for it and that they are just going to get it – you better be ready to keep on giving it to them. As a parent of a person with intellectual disabilities, that’s the last thing I want for my daughter. I want her to be able to stand on her own two feet and understand how to go and get it for herself.” With the help of 15,000 volunteers and over $17 million dollars in corporate and individual donations, the event not only highlighted champions on the field of play; it helped to accurately diagnose health issues for hundreds of athletes who participated in the Healthy Athletes Program, a collaboration with Kaiser Permanente. For Kirby, the highlight of the event was the opening ceremonies, held at Husky Stadium. When Tim Shriver, Chairman of Special Olympics and son of Special Olympics founder Eunice Shriver, took the stage, by his side stood a 9-year old girl, Frannie Ronan. Frannie has Down syndrome and was one of the participating athletes. She was not part of the planned program. Tim had spontaneously asked her to come on stage with him. At the end of his speech, Frannie took the microphone and said, “Hi, I’m Frannie and I love all of you.” Kirby says the crowd went wild, shouting, “Frannie, Frannie, Frannie.” She had captured everyone’s hearts there and truly embodied the essence of Special Olympics. “What I learned that day,” says Kirby “is that it’s important to be open to serendipity. We spent years planning this event and making sure that everything was perfect, but in the end it was an unplanned moment that really made the impact. It took Tim, and the team being open to letting things happen, and making sure to include folks who might not otherwise be included. It would have been easy to say let’s not distract from Mr. Shriver’s speech, but what I have learned through Special Olympics is that when you exclude folks, you lose.” Kirby believes material success has a limited return. “There is a ceiling on how good [money and position] can make you feel,” he says. “So, if it’s not that, then you have to ask yourself how are you going to feel good about being in the world, especially if you are a person who is driven to accomplish things. What does accomplishment and achievement look like if it’s not for your own personal gain? If you do a startup, maybe you change the world, but most likely you just change the way money moves around between investors and consumers. But if you grow a movement you can change the world, and you will change it for the people who need it the most.”

“WHAT DOES ACCOMPLISHMENT AND ACHIEVEMENT LOOK LIKE IF IT’S NOT FOR YOUR OWN PERSONAL GAIN? IF YOU DO A STARTUP, MAYBE YOU CHANGE THE WORLD, BUT MOST LIKELY YOU JUST CHANGE THE WAY MONEY MOVES AROUND BETWEEN INVESTORS AND CONSUMERS. BUT IF YOU GROW A MOVEMENT YOU CAN CHANGE THE WORLD, AND YOU WILL CHANGE IT FOR THE PEOPLE WHO NEED IT THE MOST.”

REACH WHERE OTHERS DON’T JUNE 1, 2018 Friday night. Seattle Prep graduation. Benaroya Hall. A beautiful formal celebration with 181 students surrounded by family, friends, and uplifting messages of ’you are ready to go and do great things in your life.’ It is a celebration of academic achievement, a celebration of a four-year journey of growth. A class moving on to great colleges and universities!

JUNE 2, 2018 Saturday afternoon. Tonasket High School graduation. Just shy of the Canadian-U.S. border, 250 miles away from Seattle, a town of 1,000. There, 55 students and equally proud parents and friends, but many dressed as if they just came straight from the fields. A projector which did not align correctly. A principal trying his best, but clearly uncomfortable speaking to a large group; and a graduation

that focused on the athletic achievements of a few popular kids. There were no speeches that encouraged anyone “to go forth and set the world on fire.” I know this graduating class well. Through my work with Central Washington University (CWU) GEARUP, I have been a part of many of their lives since they were in 6th grade. Amaan, Kally and Michael (pictured here with my daughter Mirabelle) have been friends all along. In fact, it is because of these friendships that Mirabelle chose to apply to Prep, and is so committed to her education. I roped these three students into robotics to motivate them and give them a place to belong. I know that without robotics, all three of them would have left school or worse. They all have an aptitude to do well in the STEM areas. All of them should go to college, because they have potential. If given the chance, they too will shine and set the world on fire. Amaan is a young man who is finally admitting he is gay, in a town where that is not an easy thing. As a child he was passed around from home to home and often had to work to get food for himself. Trying to do homework was a challenge. I don’t need to tell you what this does to a GPA. But he knows he needs to go on and pursue his education. Kally is a bright kid with a lot of strikes against her, but she is going to CWU to study applied engineering; she has become driven and if she stays focused will do well.

Nate Hancock ’20 joined classmate Mirabelle Scholten ’19 and robotics coach Willem Scholten in Haiti, teaching 160 students from grades K-8 about engineering and math. In spite of sweltering heat and intermittent electricity, the weeklong collaboration was a beehive of activity. They taught more sophisticated programming to the older students in preparation for the building of a robot for this year’s competition.

Haiti

“In Haiti, one of the ways to empower women to stand up to violence is to educate them, to give them 21st century skills so they have the ability to leapfrog out of poverty and change not only their circumstances but those around them.”

Michael’s brain works differently than what we would call ’the norm.’ He has never gotten the services he so deserves, yet he is brilliant in physics and all things space-related. He scraped together a 2.0 GPA by graduation, yet he was denied admission at CWU due to his earlier GPA. He got fired up and on his own got CWU to re-examine his potential admissions. He will thrive once he is there. So what does this have to do with Prep? Everything. Robotics has been a lifeline for these kids; their reason to belong; their reason to wake up. They have visited Prep. They have slept on the gym floor. They have slept at my house. They have celebrated with us. They have shared their love for robotics with our Prep teams. Our students have Skyped with them and helped them overcome programming

Prep’s outreach to Haiti is a bright spot in a country marked by natural disasters, political instability, and extreme poverty. For the last three years Willem Scholten and daughter Mirabelle ’19 have been bringing their robotics know-how to the students at College Regina Assumpta, an all-girls school run by the Sisters of the Holy Cross. It is Haiti’s first and only student robotics team. The goal of the program is to empower Haitian girls to become engineers by offering mentorship, teacher training, curriculum oversight, robotic components, and in-person summer camps. This is the Scholtens’ seventh trip to the Haitian school.

issues. While they live in a different town and in some ways a different world than ours, they have come to realize that they can do the same things if they work for it; they can make their dreams reality if they are given love and support. Prep kids have learned from them, too. When we took our robotics teams to Tonasket, it was an eye-opener. The students learned that the closest movie theater is in Canada; the nearest retail store is Walmart, 35 miles away; and yes, as soon as school gets out, everyone is picking cherries, peaches, apples, you name it, because if not, you won’t make it through the winter. But this common passion for tinkering, engineering, and robotics is more critical than any difference. When Prep organizes or supports robotics tournaments, or when we

Partnership In summer 2018, Haitian students from College Regina Assumpta boarded a plane to Seattle Prep for a weeklong camp of robotics and engineering. The diverse camp included a team from Quincy High School in Eastern Washington, a team from Wenatchee Foothills Middle School, and several college student assistants from Central Washington University. Prep robotic students Mirabelle Scholten ’19, Max Zipperer ’20 and Nate Hancock ’20 were instrumental leaders. This unlikely cast of characters is a result of the robotic team’s ongoing connections with Haiti and CWU GEARUP, a program that serves populations who might not otherwise be considering college.

have parents referee and spend time with those kids, we affect them positively. When Prep students, faculty, and parents think of their place in the world, when we try to go forward and set the world on fire, we should realize that our reach can be far and deep, often touching people we can’t even imagine. I know that Mirabelle will never admit it, but attending the Tonasket graduation was an emotional day of coming full circle. She stood with the kids who had motivated her to go to Prep, which has given her opportunities beyond her wildest dreams. And now, she was there to celebrate with them as they start their new journeys, knowing that she played a small part in their success. This is the kind of thing that changes people forever, and it is all made possible by Seattle Prep.

“Superior engineering, compassion, and support of others always outperforms teams who believe that lawyering is the way to play the game. Robotics is bigger than building a robot and competing.” – Robotics Coach Willem Scholten

Outreach A group of six Prep juniors are taking a leadership role in robotics as well as providing service to the greater Seattle community with their mentorship and oversight of a middle school robotics program. The effort draws students from the following grade schools: St. Luke, St. Matthew, Our Lady of Fatima, St. Alphonsus, St. Joseph, and Seattle Nativity. Coach Willem says, “I strongly believe in high school students giving back. Prep kids run the tournaments and support the younger students. I tell them, ’when you have to teach engineering, you become a better engineer.’”

Did You Know? Prep’s Robotics Team beat 36 other teams to earn the coveted Design Award at the February 2018 CWU Robotics Competition. This award is bestowed on a team who has a first-class engineering notebook and design of their competing robot. The award earned Prep a slot at the state championships. Prep was also previously awarded the Excellence Award, the highest award given out during competitions, which represents a team that most embodies the ideals of VEX Robotics – a team that not only builds a great robot, but more importantly, recognizes that winning is great but how you play and participate in the robotics community is more important. Dear Seattle Prep Community, It has been a historic start to the 2018-2019 school year, and it has only just begun. Imagine what’s to come. We are so thankful for the continued generosity of the Prep community; it is what allows us to be able to seek the Magis, year after year. Seattle Prep is fortunate to have an all-time high enrollment of 765 students this year, and for the first time ever, 90% of the accepted freshman students who were offered tuition assistance chose to attend Prep. Our goal is to be able to provide a Jesuit education to any qualified applicant, regardless of his/her financial situation. This is made possible by the overwhelming support of you, our benefactors. This year, Seattle Prep will distribute over 2.6 million dollars in financial assistance. Thanks to your generous support, the Board of Trustees has been able to increase financial aid over each of the past 10 years, with significant increases over the last five. As the cost of living in Puget Sound continues to rise and our admissions pool widens, the need for student financial support has never been greater, and the Seattle Prep community always responds in kind! For that we say, “thank you!” As a former student, Alumni Board Chair, and now Board of Trustees Chair, I can say, unequivocally, that it is a blessing to be a part of this amazing community. Thank you again to each and every one of you for the role you play in this success. Sincerely, David Raney ’95 Chair, Seattle Prep Board of Trustees, 2018-2019

“Prep was my family,” Kevin Wherry ’74 stresses. “The school and the football team became my foundation. You were there for each other and didn’t leave anyone behind. When [classmate] Celso Tolman’s mother died our senior year, he was a pallbearer. Members of the football team got permission from football coach and Vice Principal Mr. Winters to attend the funeral.” Wherry says, “When Celso turned and saw us, he almost dropped the casket. That love touches me to this day. Supporting him was more important than what we would have learned in class that day.” This is the type of compassion that Jesuit education embodies again and again. It’s about reaching beyond yourself to give of your time, talents, and treasure. Rob Lowery ’74 remembers choir director Mr. Hasslinger’s faith in his students. As the Prep Glee Club assembled nervously for a performance at the 1974 World Expo in Spokane, Mr. Hasslinger stepped up to direct and opened his jacket to reveal a red papier-mâché heart. “Everyone laughed and we gave a tremendous performance!” Lowery shares. “We were in it together as a performance group and as a Prep family.” “God gave me the teaching gene, but Fr. John Foster, S.J. motivated me to become a teacher,” Wherry ruminates. “I still have a letter he sent me after I graduated from Stanford, telling me to throw everything I learned out the window. ’You won’t learn how to teach from a book. You need to relate to students in order to get the best out of them. With that trust, encourage them to find their voice.’” Prep Health and Exercise Science teacher, Director of Diversity, and head track coach Deino Scott ’74 remembers driving several cars full of food to one woman’s house. “Every single cupboard was empty. We filled all of them, plus the fridge. She was in shock. I remember driving away thinking, ‘At least someone’s going to have something to eat tonight.’” Jesuit education asks us to be people for others. Service projects give students an opportunity to put this into action. This year at Prep’s annual Day of Service event 760 students and 65 faculty and staff worked at 26 different sites in

Seattle, from homeless shelters to low-income housing. It’s a continuation of what the Class of 1974 took to heart when they delivered food to families. Scott continues, “My mom said you should help others because you never know when you may need it. Growing up in Houston and Washington, D.C., I saw serious poverty that I wouldn’t wish on anyone! A lot of my motivation now is driven by those memories.” Today Prep’s Magis Christian Service Program requires 58 hours of service from each student before they graduate. Many do much more. It’s a lesson that the Class of 1974 remembers well. “Service projects taught us to give back,” Wherry said. “There was more to life than ourselves and our needs. We had to meet the needs of others, too. It taught us to be grateful for what we had. I took that lesson to heart and have done service ever since.” Several classmates cite “Johnny” McKay ’74 as an exemplary model of service, and he continues to volunteer at Prep in leadership capacities as well as working with students and teachers. “Going to Prep was the best mistake I ever made,” says Jim McCutchan ’74. “I went to play sports and left with an education.” Jim earned his way through Prep with a paper route. “My first year, tuition was $900. My parents didn’t have the money, but they said I could go to Prep if I could pay for it and find my own ride, so I did.” Today, Jim runs Pilchuck Veterinary Hospital, one of the premier large and small vet hospitals in the country. He says, “Four years of Latin, math and English prepared me for college. Fr. Falsetto, S.J., and the Jesuits made learning fun. The skills I used to network and develop lifetime relationships with teachers and peers were the same skills I used to build a business.” A scholarship helped David McCambridge ’74 attend Prep. “With two boys already at Prep, my parents couldn’t afford it. I give now as a way to pay it back.” Scott heard about a well-known Seattle tech billionaire who made a sizable gift to support scholarships at his high school alma mater, with the conviction that no qualified student should be turned away because of an inability to pay tuition. “My wildest dream is that we can say that at Prep too,” Scott says. “I wish I was a billionaire, but if you can help one kid…” President Kent Hickey concurs. “It’s a challenging goal

The 1973-74 Seattle Prep Lettermen’s Club was one of the largest clubs at the time and consisted of a broad cross-section of the student body. Celso Tolman ’74 was club president. The club collected over 12,000 pounds of food and $600, which they distributed to 60 families at Christmas. for every qualified applicant to attend Prep regardless of financial ability, but not an impossible one. Generous alumni and the Prep community allow us to accomplish many things.” With Prep tuition at nearly $20,000, the demand for financial assistance has risen dramatically in the last decade. This year, Prep awarded over $2.6M in tuition assistance to 28 percent of its student body, with awards ranging from $2,500 to full tuition. Funds raised through the Annual Appeal help, but endowment earnings are a more stable source of revenue, especially in a robust economy. Scott says, “I heard about other classes starting endowments and found out that no ’70s class had done so. In disbelief he mailed a letter last fall to everyone, in what he affectionately calls the “Last Great Class,” inviting them to start a class endowment. ’After last year’s graduation,” he wrote, “I was overwhelmed with the gratitude our graduates and their parents expressed to the faculty. It makes me proud to be a Panther!

“It is the needs of these incredibly deserving young people that tugs at my heart. For many students, a little financial help enables them to pursue their dream of a Jesuit education. These kids are the reason I’m here. I’d like to think that 40 years ago there were alumni looking out for us, too.” McCutchan was one of the first to respond. He provided a significant seed gift to the endowment. “Prep taught me to give back. It’s the St. Ignatius thing. Whether you’re rich in spiritual gifts or knowledge, giving back is how you do the work.” The Class of ’74 Endowment has received over $30,000 in gifts, well on its way to the $50,000 required for full funding. When it reaches its goal, the endowment will generate an annual $2,375 scholarship – in perpetuity. Scott says, “When I talk to kids and parents who want to attend Prep, I tell them we will do everything we can to help them succeed. I think a lot of my classmates feel the same way.”

A Challenge to the Class of 1974 An anonymous member of the Class of 1974 has challenged his classmates to join him in giving to the Class of ’74 Endowment and will match all endowment gifts made by December 31, 2018 (up to $20,000). “There are so many people who helped me in life: Jesuits at Prep, college professors, family members, and others. This is our opportunity to pay it forward. Don’t hold back!”

ENDOWMENT STATISTICS In 2017/2018, endowments earnings helped provide tuition assistance and work study grants to 188 students (25% of the student body). A few endowment funds support other areas of education including unrestricted support, the Learning Resource Center, Science Department, great teachers, and student engagement with technology.

PARTING SHOT

Students from Prep’s Faith in Action class led a 10-mile hike as part of the Senior Pilgrimage Retreat. Students stopped at spots along the route and shared their stories. Other students responded with journal reflections. The retreat included an overnight camp, talent show, feet washing and the ever popular campfire.
