Campaign & Construction Update Over the past year, A Brave Future Capital Campaign reached the $8,000,000 milestone and moved into the public phase of fundraising. Thanks to the generosity of over 100 lead and major donors, BBHS secured the funds to initiate the most significant investments in our facilities and programs since the building of the school in 1954. Over the summer of 2017, the generous support of A Brave Future Capital Campaign has enabled the full replacement of our 60+ year-old heating system as well as the addition of a second floor in the Ernie Rose Activities Center (construction progress photos pictured here and on the cover). On October 14th we look forward to dedicating our new locker rooms, classroom, cardio workout room, and training room. We continue pursuing our goal of raising $12,000,000 with additional updates to our school including an expanded cafeteria, beautified quad, new blinds in classrooms, updated choir room and performing arts space, as well as more professional development funds for faculty and staff. Over the public phase of the campaign in the year ahead, we are appealing to all BBHS community members to pledge their support and add their names to the growing list of donors. We are so excited to see our students and staff utilize all these new improvements and can’t wait to provide even more enhancements to our programs with your generous help. Look for photos of the finished Ernie Rose Activities Center in the spring issue of Brave Magazine!

Dear friends and families of Bishop Blanchet High School, We are pleased to share with you the Bishop Blanchet High School Annual Report, which covers school activities and achievements from July 1, 2016 through June 30, 2017. This report gives us the opportunity to reflect upon the success of the past year and highlight the positive impact of your investments on the lives of the young men and women we serve each day. In this issue of the annual report, we recognize members of the BBHS family who have made special efforts to give back to our beloved school through their time, talents and treasure. In particular this year, we are grateful for the many years of service from John Traynor, our outgoing Advisory Board Chair, and excited to welcome Matt Wells as our new Chair. As you will see, we ended the fiscal year with a modest surplus and continued endowment growth. Thanks to our engaged and enthusiastic community, we had yet another record-setting number of donors supporting our school. As we moved through the second year of A Brave Future Capital Campaign, we continued to be blessed with incredible levels of generosity, enabling us to fully replace our heating system throughout the school and add a second floor in the Ernie Rose Activities Center including new locker rooms, a classroom, a cardio/workout room, and a training room. We are excited about additional improvements planned in the year ahead and look forward to reporting our progress next year! We are so grateful for the energy and generosity of all our parents, alumni, past parents, grandparents, friends, faculty and staff. Your commitment to Bishop Blanchet ensures that we can continue to form the minds and hearts of the precious young men and women we are so blessed to serve. We thank you for your continued support and dedication to this Brave Family! God Bless and Go Braves! Antonio DeSapio President

Introducing Bishop Blanchet High School’s New Chaplain

Fr. Colin Parrish

Tell us a little about your background – where you grew up, where you went to school, what your pre-priesthood career was like, etc. I grew up in Ballard and I was raised in a secular/non-religious house. I went to school at St. Catherine’s and O’Dea and converted to Catholicism when I was 18. After graduating high school, I went into the Navy and I was a firefighter on the USS Abraham Lincoln before starting seminary after 5½ years of service. I attended Gonzaga University for my bachelor’s degree in philosophy and went to Mundelein Seminary for my masters in theology. What called you to the priesthood? Were your family and friends surprised by your calling? God called me to the priesthood… He attracted me to the priesthood by helping me see how radical and crazy it is. He also helped me see that the vocation of priesthood is the method by which He wants to make me fulfilled and joyful. My parents were surprised. They didn’t like it. I was the only “religious” person in most of my family and I was the only Catholic; plus, I am an only child. How do you see your role at BBHS? What will your biggest priorities be? Basically, helping students experience the Mystery, that is, the relationship of God. I see myself as being a conduit for them to experience His presence in their lives. Because of that, I also see my role as helping them ask the big questions of existence: what is happiness, purpose, meaning, fulfillment, what does it mean to be human, what does it mean to be in relationship with others. I also see myself as accompanying them in this process. I expect my primary role for the first year is to listen A LOT. What are you most excited about regarding this new role in a school? Is there anything you’re anxious about? Of course I have anxieties, but they are a bit nebulous and hard to name because I haven’t yet started working at BBHS. I am most excited about the ability to celebrate Mass and hear confessions and to simply be a presence of Christ among our students.

What will your non-BBHS work entail? I am the parochial vicar at St. Luke in Shoreline, where I serve most of my time. I am learning how to be a pastor. What do you like doing in your free time? Spending time with my friends, drawing, and going to concerts and shows.

Rachel Longest: Campus Ministry Director

6

Tell us about your background. What has your career been like before joining BBHS? I’ve lived a variety of places (I’m on my 13th home address since graduating college) and have known many fantastic people. I started working in education with the Jesuit Volunteers at a high school in Pohnpei, Micronesia. I was there for two years and had all sorts of adventures, all while opening up to a career path I had never imagined. Since then, I’ve worked in campus ministry, overseeing service programs, leading retreats, teaching a peer ministry course and providing leadership training. There are days when the gravity of it all hits me and I realize, “Man! I’ve been a part of the high school story for a few thousand kids.” I think about my time in high school, and realize that I, too, can crop up in people’s memories as a part of their time in high school. It’s an amazing privilege and responsibility.

Why did joining BBHS as the new Campus Ministry Director appeal to you?

FAVORITES

Oh man, this is a tough one. There are so many right answers. I’ve visited Seattle several times to see my family, and it has always seemed like a place I’d enjoy living. When I visited Blanchet, I felt so relaxed and comfortable. The campus ministry program at Blanchet seems very robust and inviting with a lot of retreat and service opportunities. There’s a lot for people to take advantage of, but only if they want to – it’s not being forced. There are also the moments where the entire community is brought together and centered through liturgy and grade-level retreats. And that balance felt like something I wanted to be part of.

FOOD Dark Chocolate TV SHOW Live coverage of the Tour de France BOOK The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho VACATION SPOT Wherever my friends are PLACE IN SEATTLE The mini donut stand in Pike Place Market SATURDAY ACTIVITY Going for a bike ride and then cooking a tasty dinner

What are you most excited about in taking on this new role? What are you most anxious about? My personality thrives off of change and challenges. When things are routine, I get bored. So I am excited about the newness presented by being in a different place. It’s fun for me to take on new things, learn new systems and work with new people. I’m really looking forward to getting to know students, be with them on retreats and support them in the things they do outside of class. I’m excited to get to know my colleagues and work alongside them. As far as the things I’m anxious about, it’s the little things. How do I make copies? What if my sense of humor isn’t appreciated? Who will I eat lunch with? What if people find out that I don’t drink coffee?

What’s your favorite part about working with high school age students? This age group is my absolute favorite for the ways that I get to watch them form opinions, develop resilience and become more fully alive. Working with high schoolers requires balancing the two extremes of “Here, let me tell you how to do it,” and “Just figure it out, you’ll be fine!” While teenagers need to take on more independence and self-advocacy as they move into high school, they are also in need of support and guidance. They need people who will ask them questions so they can find their own answers. And, they need the freedom to fail and make mistakes.

I appreciate being there as successes and failures teach them about forgiveness, grace, perseverance, and humility.

What do you see as your biggest priorities during your first year? Ministry is all about relationships, so the most important thing for me is getting to know people. It’s going to be most important for me to be available and to be curious – getting to know people is a huge focus. Logistics need to be handled, too, but I need to know who those logistics are for.

What do you like to do in your spare time? I feel like this defines me more than the other questions – by putting these things in print, I have to ensure that what I say is actually true. One thing that I can say is that I like to be active by biking and running. I’ve had an injury this past year that kept me sidelined a bit, but when I’m healthy, I love to do triathlons. The swimming part isn’t my favorite, but it provides me with a good challenge, and I get a huge boost of confidence every time I exit the water and head for the bike. Cycling, really, is my favorite. Though the hills of Seattle are giving me a bit of a challenge, I’m looking forward to the day when I can ride around the city without sucking so much wind. Another thing I love to do is woodworking. I love the creativity and problem-solving involved. I find it extremely satisfying to point at something and say, “I made that.”

Sam Procopio ’00: Principal

Tell us about your background – education, career, etc. I am a proud graduate of St. Joseph grade school, Bishop Blanchet High School, the University of Portland (majored in math, studied abroad in Australia and participated in their entrepreneurial scholars program), University of Notre Dame (studied education), and Seattle University (where I received my doctorate in educational leadership). Professionally, I served as a religion/math teacher and soccer/basketball coach for two years at Holy Trinity Catholic Middle School in Charlotte NC, a math teacher and soccer/basketball coach for two years at Interlake High School in Bellevue and as a teacher, soccer/basketball coach and administrator for nine years at Holy Names Academy in Seattle. Why did joining BBHS as the new Principal appeal to you? Joining Bishop Blanchet appealed to me largely because of my experience as a student at Bishop Blanchet. My experience here was incredibly positive and transformative, and to be able to serve this school in a meaningful way means so much to me. What are you most excited about in taking on this new role? What are you most anxious about? The aspect of this new role I am most excited about is coming home to a community that has meant so much to me. Specifically, I am excited about getting to know members of the community and programs that make this place great. I am most anxious to be giving up teaching and coaching in order to serve fully in this new capacity. What’s your favorite part about working with high school age students? I love being able to mentor and support high school students to reach their goals. Over the last decade, students seem so talented that I often think my job has mostly been to stay out of their way and keep their drive and momentum going. It is incredibly motivating to hear from former students about all the amazing things they are accomplishing, and inspiring to know that I have played even a small role. What do you see as your biggest priorities during your first year? My biggest priority is to learn as much as possible from as many people associated with Bishop Blanchet. The Bishop Blanchet community is so strong – I cannot wait to learn about all the great things happening here. What do you like to do in your spare time? I enjoy spending time with my wife and two children. This usually consists of spending time outside or with friends and their children, and playing and watching sports.

Sean Gaskill ’02: Athletic Director

Tell us about your background in athletics and teaching. Growing up, I attended St. Luke grade school and participated in basketball, soccer, baseball and cross country. When I was a student at Bishop Blanchet I played football, basketball and tennis. I received varsity letters in football and tennis and was a firstteam linebacker during my junior year (2001). After BBHS, I continued my football career for two years at Whitworth University. My first coaching experience came when I was a Senior at Bishop Blanchet, when I coached a 6th grade basketball team after school at UCDS school. From that point on, I knew that I wanted to do something within the Athletics field because I enjoyed it so much. After that experience, I became involved with the Skyhawks summer program teaching tennis and basketball, and coached for a brief time within the local CYO sports programs. At Bishop Blanchet, I have coached freshman boys basketball and golf for the last nine years.

job. As the AD, I want my coaches to know that they have my full support and know that I will help them out in any way I can, from providing coaching aids to professional development opportunities.

I have been a classroom teacher at Bishop Blanchet for 10 years and have taught Biology, Physical Science, US History, World History and P.E.

What’s your favorite part about working with high school age students? I think my favorite part in working with students is the range from goofiness to seriousness you can have with them in a two minute conversation – their minds seem to be always going 1,000 mph with activity. Every conversation is different!

Why did becoming the new BBHS Athletic Director appeal to you? Sports have played a major role in my life – from the relationships I have made to the success and challenges I have faced on and off the field. I want to continue and grow the tradition of Bishop Blanchet Athletics in any way I can to make it a positive and successful experience for all of our athletes.

What do you see as your biggest priorities during your first year? My biggest priority during my first year is to examine the athletics program and to identify areas of success and potential for growth. I also want to expand our social media presence to help our current families and alumni better participate in what is happening with all of our athletics at BBHS.

What are you most excited about in taking on this new role? One of the things I am most excited for in becoming the AD is the chance to work with our coaches. Coaching can be a very challenging but rewarding

What do you like to do in your spare time? Golf is my biggest passion. In my spare time you will find me either at Interbay Golf Center hitting a bucket of golf balls or on a local Seattle municipal golf course, hopefully enjoying a round.

On May 11th, Blanchet inducted 24 new members into the International Thespians Society, Troupe 5342. To become a member of ITS, students must log over 100 hours of work in at least two separate categories, such as Acting and Production. In June, the drama faculty (Mrs. Mo Mershon, Mr. Corey Eriksen and Mr. Robert Bergin) accompanied a group of 18 drama students to New York City, where they saw four Broadway shows, met with actors, including BBHS alumnus Don Darryl Rivera ’02, and took part in acting and stage combat workshops. This trip was a fitting send-off for Mrs. Mershon, who has retired after serving 17 years as Blanchet’s Drama Director. We will miss you, Mo! This year’s fall play is The Secret in the Wings by Mary Zimmerman, directed by Mr. Bergin. The play explores how we understand fairy tales at different ages. Performances are December 1st through 3rd.

The Bishop Blanchet Boys Lacrosse team had another solid season against some very tough competition. Although there were a few ups and downs, the Braves pulled wins over Stevenson High School from California and against neighborhood rival Roosevelt. However what really stood out was how much the Braves improved as a team throughout the spring. Blanchet hopes to pick up the momentum from this year and produce a tough group to compete next spring. In terms of accolades, Jackson Brown ’18 was named Second Team All-Metro midfielder.

In just the second year of the program, the girls Lacrosse team moved up to compete at the varsity level. The move was a big step for our young team, holding a roster of 30 players with just three upperclassmen. The young team looks forward to continued growth in the coming years!

Despite the young roster, the Braves held good standing in the competitive Metro League and entered post-season play. The team holds high expectations for the 2018 season.

Tennis The 2017 Bishop Blanchet tennis teams had a fantastic season with a record turnout. Over 70 boys and girls went through tryouts with 40 making the Junior Varsity and Varsity teams. The Varsity boys team had six returning seniors and captured 1st place in their Metro division and beat Seattle Prep for the first time in 21 years.

Thank you for your service! The heart of a Bishop Blanchet education is the dedicated faculty and staff that serve our students. From inspiring lessons to late nights at sporting events, to making sure candy is always in fresh supply, the three individuals below have fully given of themselves professionally and personally to make BBHS feel like home for all of our families.

George, we will miss your presence in the halls of BBHS. You have given your entire professional life to the Braves – a truly remarkable gift. You have impacted this school in so many ways and you will be remembered years from now by those lucky enough to have spent time with you. Your commitment and dedication to the Braves is unmatched. You come from a time when words like commitment, honor, loyalty and service to an organization really were the foundation of your generation. Thank you for modeling these traits and for showing us how it’s supposed to be done. God Bless and Godspeed in the next phase of your journey!

George Monica ’67: Athletic Director, Coach & Instructor Tribute by Chuck Bocian, VP for Student Life We cannot thank George Monica enough for all that he has done for Bishop Blanchet over the years. People don’t realize just how much time he has devoted to the students – the countless hours as the football and baseball coach, the nights and weekends spent at athletic events both home and away and, of course, the PE and History classes. George has made it his personal goal to ensure that all student athletes, both girls and boys, had equal access to participate and compete in all sports offered while in attendance at Blanchet. Each sport was given the support to field competitive teams. This included access to quality coaches, all the necessary team gear, practice sites, buses and the toughest opponents to compete with and against.

Judy Baumgartner: English Teacher Tribute by Kelli Christiansen Never one to sit back and watch, Judy dedicated herself to the students and the community both in and out of the classroom, always going the extra mile for the students. As an English teacher, Judy was known as the resource for all questions on grammar. She taught every single class offered over her long and celebrated tenure from English 9 to a senior class on Short Fiction. Never one to let reading and scoring papers take up all her time, Judy managed to get herself involved in many different student activities, including coaching students in writing, taking time for extra tutoring and attending student performances and athletic events. Whether coaching track or cross country, leading students trips to explore the wonders of Europe, running an SAT prep class with Kerry Burrows, or working with the sophomore class cabinet as a moderator, Judy could often be found there in the middle of everything, helping the

Shirley Epton: Development Assistant Tribute by Mary Williams Beard ’81 sophomores decorate the gym for Homecoming and always cheering them on. In everything Judy was a model for others on the way to get involved, engage with the students and encourage them to use their leadership skills. Professionally, Judy served as English Department chair and teacher, where she supervised the hiring and mentoring of new English teachers; as school librarian, Judy supervised the transition of the library from the card catalogue to the digital age. Lastly, as the official writing coach, Judy worked with countless students one-on-one, helping them with their writing across all subject areas, as well as breaking down the mysteries of MLA. In her forty plus years here, countless alumni owe Ms. Baum for teaching them how to write clearly, identify key parts of speech and explain the opening passage of A Tale of Two Cities. Beloved by the students, faculty and parents alike, Ms. Baum always found a way to make people feel valued and supported. We miss her generous and kind presence in the building as well as her silly antics and mischievous grin. Enjoy retirement, Judy! Your “deep gladness” has been contagious and will remain with us for a long time to come!

Shirley Epton began as a volunteer when her son Michael ’04 was a student here at BBHS. She was a stellar volunteer and was offered a part-time job which eventually worked into a full time job. She worked at BBHS for over 15 years and her last post was as our Development Assistant and Database Manager. Her dedication to doing accurate work is unparalleled and is something I have not seen matched in my time as a professional. She held all of us in the Development Department to a higher standard and made us a better department because she cares so much! Her dedication to Blanchet and her coworkers was amazing and her ability to find a small moment to say that she appreciates you, or that she enjoys having you in the office, makes a Wednesday feel like a Friday! Blanchet is grateful for Shirley’s excellent work and we will miss her immensely! We wish her a wonderful retirement and safe travels as she makes her way east of the mountains and to Florida to visit her siblings. Shirley also looks forward to getting her hands dirty while working in her yard in the Wedgwood area. Shirley was honored with the 2016-17 Jim Pinsoneault Beyond the Classroom Staff Award for her incredible commitment to BBHS. Congratulations!

On June 19th, at Willows Run Golf Course, BBHS alums, parents and friends hit the links for the 20th Annual Bishop Blanchet Golf Classic. For two decades, the BBHS community has come together to golf, have a good time and raise money for the BBHS Annual Fund. Golfers had an awesome day in Redmond and a delicious catered dinner. This year Head Football Coach Kyle Moore ’98 was our Beat the Coach participant and players enjoyed getting to meet coach and try to best him on a “closest to the pin” contest. Raffle winners took home Husky Football tickets, fresh crab, BBHS gear and lodging for four in Hawaii. Thank you to all of the golfers and sponsors who made it possible for us to hold this wonderful annual event. Also, a big thank you goes out to the BBHS Alumni Board for their efforts in helping to plan the event. We hope to see you all for our 21st edition of the Golf Classic on Monday, June 18, 2018 at Willows Run Golf Course.

Endowments Earning Interest The Bishop Blanchet General Endowment was started in 1980 through the guidance of then Principal Dr. Joe Haggarty. The purpose of the fund was to support Bishop Blanchet High School through the 1980s and into the future. The fund’s beginnings were tied to a need to help stabilize escalating tuition and help fund needed capital improvements over time at Bishop Blanchet. At the time, the administration saw a need for a fund to provide for long term stability to ensure the future success of BBHS. This fund was conceptualized as a supplement to other funding sources like tuition and donations to the school. The fund was originally invested by the Archdiocese of Seattle Investment Committee and now is maintained by the Fulcrum Foundation. The group that started the endowment included the School Board, the Principal (Dr. Haggarty), a General Chairman (Josh Parker), an Executive Committee (Joe Haggarty, Bill Snorsky, Robert Leigh, Jean Holly and Harold Hopper) and many other volunteers. Initially, the group set the goal of raising 1,000,000 in pledges by the end of 1981. Mr. Parker remembers that the effort to create the fund was born out of a drive to start something for the sole benefit of Bishop Blanchet High School. Dr. Haggarty approached Ed Wartelle, a supporter of the drive, with the idea to start the fund and raise $1 million dollars. These funds would be maintained and used specifically by BBHS. As the initial campaign was nearing completion, Joe invited Ed over for a wonderful dinner at his house and, after dinner concluded, he asked Ed to stay involved and “get us to two million.” Worth $7 million dollars today, the General Endowment Fund is a testament to the commitment and foresight of the Blanchet community.

Because of this fund, Blanchet has been able to cover planned and unplanned expenses and ensure the continued ability to provide a Catholic education to thousands of students in the greater Seattle area. According to Ed, the idea of the endowment was twofold: “provide for the current time and remain large enough to be beneficial for a long time.” Currently, the General Endowment has a value of $7 million and remains available and intact to provide for Blanchet’s future in perpetuity. The Bishop Blanchet General Endowment is an important part of Blanchet’s future success and a testament to the work of our community of leaders and volunteers that had the foresight to create this resource so many years ago. The original goals of long term stability and prudent planning are still at the core of the Bishop Blanchet General Endowment. You can make a donation to the Endowment online at our website under the Support tab of bishopblanchet.org. Donations will be added to the corpus of the fund and interest earned will be used to cover operating needs of Bishop Blanchet. If you have questions about giving to the endowment or if you’d like to estabish your own named endowment, please contact Robert Lukevich at rlukevich@bishopblanchet.org or at 206-527-3981.

The school receives annual income from endowment earnings and growth, which is used to cover operating costs, financial aid, academic programs and capital improvements. The fund’s commitment of income to the school budget for the 2016-2017 school year was $175,000, however the school out performed its budget and no endowment transfer was necessary.

Named Endowments An endowment is a gift that provides a stable source of economic support in perpetuity. When an endowment is established, the money becomes a permanent investment for the school, with the annual interest from that investment providing financial resources to support an area of need. An endowment offers the opportunity to leave a legacy for future students. Contributions to endowments can be made with cash, securities, property or other assets. Currently our endowments, which are often named for individual donors, their families or specific classes, are established with a $25,000 minimum gift amount. Following is a list of our named endowment funds. The total balance of these endowments was $2,085,000 as of June 30, 2017.
