OUR PURPOSE OUR HISTORY
As an association, we have been representing excellence in the plumbing and gas fitting trades for over 100 years.
A Master Plumber evolved from a journeyman (tradesman) to a Master only after completion of additional training and experience, and was then able to employ journeymen and apprentices.
The Master Plumbers Association in South Australia was formed in 1908 as a united body of these employers established to negotiate with the industry union. This role remained largely unchanged for 80 years, until the introduction of Enterprise Bargaining Agreements. In adapting to this new world, our industrial relations role was significantly reduced, and our association adapted by focusing on member support.
Today, Master Plumbers SA is a not-for-profit Membership Association and Group Training Organisation (GTO).

Members are expected to conduct their business in accordance with our Code of Ethics to maintain the highest standards of business conduct.

Full Membership is designed for sole operators and plumbing company owners.
This Membership entitles Members to all Benefits and Services, including discounts on vehicle purchases at selected dealers.
Industry Membership is designed for organisations who are either directly involved with the Plumbing Industry (eg. plumbing suppliers and manufacturers), or are involved in providing services to the plumbing industry.

PLUMBING AND GAS ROADSHOWS
We hold a number of Roadshows throughout South Australia to ensure our members are up-to-date with the industry.
This is an essential feature of many plumbers calendar, with Master Plumbers and the Office of the Technical Regulator discussing topical issues relating to plumbing/gas and to provide industry updates.

PRESIDENT’S LUNCH
Each year we celebrate the industry’s achievements at our President’s Lunch event, held at Adelaide Oval.
The biggest event of the year in the South Australian plumbing industry, the President’s Lunch is attended by the industry’s best, including members, apprentices as well as industry representatives.

• The Jack Holder Gold Medal Award
JACK HOLDER MEDAL
Our Jack Holder medal is the highest honour our apprentices can achieve.
John ‘Jack’ Holder was a plumbing industry leader and former President of the Master Plumbers Association of SA between 1971-1973. Jack was also the former President of the Master Plumbers Federation of Australia, Institute of Plumbing Australia and the South Australian Building Industry Specialist Contractor Association., respectively.
Jack joined the Army in 1942. At the completion of the war, it took the army until May 1946 to discharge Jack after which he finished his apprenticeship and become a fully fledged plumber. In 1952, he started his own business as a master plumber and general builder.
He received an Order of Australia Medal in 2012 for his service to the building and construction industry, to professional organisations and to the community of Noarlunga.
Previously known as the MPA Gold Medal, we renamed the award in his honour in 2021. Nominations for the Jack Holder Medal are from registered training organisations PEER and TAFE SA, and finalists are interviewed on their technical knowledge by a panel.
