On a sad note, I wish to let all members and industry stakeholders know that Crystal Balazs has decided to move on after an impressive 19 ½ Crystalyears.left school and came to MPA as a young administration officer and has achieved so much and grown into one of the best administrators I have ever encountered. We all wish her the best and hope that her next venture is equally as fulfilling as her career at MPA.
After extensive consultation during the past 3 to 4 years, the new plumbing training package has finally been approved to deliver. If you have a plumbing apprentice, you need to know this. The Certificate III in Plumbing is changing; this means that your apprentice will need to be transitioned across to the new qualification. Not only will your apprentice learn about new changes in technology, industry practices and licensing, both PEER and TAFE SA our two Registered Training Organisation’s (RTO’s) will make sure you are ready to go with this new transition.
The CPC32413 will be transitioning to the CPC32420 – Certificate III in Plumbing. Your apprentice will fall into one of the below categories:
1. Continue to complete CPC32413 Certificate III in Plumbing Your apprentice may finish their CPC32413 Certificate III in Plumbing qualification and will be unaffected by this transition. They might even finish their trade school component early.
Staff changes at MPA SA
I wish to thank both PEER (Demi Hoppo) and TAFE for their efforts in communicating with the MPA on this subject.

3 CEO EDITORIAL
New apprentices may experience a short-term delay in being scheduled into trade school due to this transition. New commencements will be scheduled into the new qualification. The two RTO’s are striving towards successful transitions and will work alongside employers, to minimise the effects that it will have on the apprentice and the employer. For the apprentices that will need to undertake gap training, RTO’s will attempt to be flexible in providing continuous gap training days to minimise lost time. This is to ensure apprentices will return to their normal scheduling as quick as possible.

Matt Ginn – Payroll and Accounts Officer

What does this mean for your apprentice?
Gavin Watson – Operations Manager
I wish to let members know that the team at MPA SA has significantly changed over the past six months. I would like to formally welcome the following new staff members:
Welcome to the July / August editorial, I must say it has been an extremely challenging time for MPA and other businesses as a number of organisations face the reality of staff changes due to a number of underlying factors. Staff are reassessing their work life balance, earnings compared to hours worked and capacity to deliver a higher return on investment expected by business owners. It doesn’t matter which industry people are in, it is across all sectors of the workforce and with additional pressures such as labour shortages, low unemployment rates and burgeoning costs of living, everyone is looking to ensure their lifestyle is well balanced.
3. New commencements
There is a large portion of students that will need to be transitioned into CPC32420. This new qualification is different from CPC32413 and there is an increase in the number of units that will be delivered. All equivalent units will be granted with a credit transfer and some of the new units will require gap training. This means that your apprentice could potentially be scheduled into more training days at trade school.

HEALTH SUPPORT NUMBERS

It’s important to ask the question, “Are you OK?” if someone seems to be doing it tough. This will lay the foundation and give them permission to open up about life’s ups and downs.
Tradies are often faced with a ‘harden up’ attitude and fear of being judged as weak when it comes to opening up about mental health.

R U OK? Day Thursday 8th September 2022 6
4 Steps to a Conversation What if they say “I’m fine”?

• Reach out to someone else who is close to that person to see if they have noticed the changes you have or whether they have concerns. You can encourage them to also check in. It is important to remember that it can take time for someone to open up about their struggles. You may need to ask “Are you OK” a few times before they feel comfortable talking. If you or someone else is in immediate danger, please call 000 to help manage the crisis. If someone you know is not OK, support is available from the following organisations: For further information, resources and support, please visit www.ruok. org.au, or Informationwww.mpasa.com.au/mental-healthandimagesprovidedbyruok.org.au
Tradies work across a variety of industries – maybe you’re part of a crew on a large construction site, or an owner operator providing services to the general public. Whatever the worksite, tradies might be faced with challenges and pressures that can bottle up over time, including job uncertainty, financial pressures, intense physical demands, workplace injuries, workplace bullying and relationship breakdowns. These can have a significant impact on mental and emotional wellbeing.
R U OK? Day |
• Check in with them again shortly after if you’re still concerned

• Ask again. You could say, “it’s just that you don’t seem like yourself lately”
• Acknowledge that they are not ready to talk • Tell them you care about them and you’re still concerned about changes in their behaviour

This will occur by increasing the small business eligibility threshold for the protections from less than 20 employees to less than 100 employees, and introducing an annual turnover threshold of less than $10 million as an alternative threshold for determining eligibility. These reforms will help to improve consumer and small business confidence, allowing the small business sector to grow with Ministerconfidence.for Small Business, Julie Collins, said the Albanese Government is serious about delivering on our better deal for small business.“These reforms are a critical part of this agenda,” she said.
The Government will introduce legislation in the upcoming sitting period to strengthen unfair contract terms protections for small businesses and consumers.

“We will deliver on our promises, and safeguard small business and contractors from exploitation.”
The Government is delivering its election commitment to make unfair contract terms illegal, protecting small businesses and the hardworking Australians they employ. Small businesses and consumers often lack the resources and bargaining power to effectively review and negotiate terms in standard form
The amendments will introduce civil penalty provisions outlawing the use of, and reliance on, unfair terms in standard form contracts. This will enable a regulator to seek a civil penalty from a court.

If a contract does not have LDs you could still be liable for damages for delay but the amount of those damages will depend on the actual loss your customer suffers because of the Thatdelay.would have to be proved. Examples of damages caused by delay might include interest on borrowings, drop in value of the project (if it is to be sold), loss of income from the project and so on. Good written contracts should allocate the risk of delay in a sensible way and it is vital that your contract addresses these issues and allocates risk appropriately.
For example, without a finish date in a contract, the law requires that the work be done in a reasonable time. What is reasonable will depend on the circumstances.
Some elaborate commercial contracts have provisions that require notice of delay to be given within a certain (often very short) period and if you don’t comply you lose any right to an Youextension.need to be really careful about these ‘time bars’. Make sure you obey them. Even if your contract doesn’t have a start and finish date or any extension of time provisions, it is good practice to tell your customer as soon as you become aware of the Leavingdelay.it until the last minute to notify of a delay will often lead to a dispute. At the very least it will lead to a disappointed customer and that is not good. If you are running late and you don’t have a right to an extension of time, you might be liable to your customer for damages.
Michael Hutton Partner Lynch Meyer Lawyers Ph: 8236 7612 Email: mhutton@lynchmeyer.com.au

That means, if you are late finishing your work, your customer can hold back a fixed amount for each day you are late finishing.
If you need advice about contracts or any aspect of your business, call us. It won’t cost you anything for the first call. 11
For example, if it is a special type of washer that cannot be sourced locally and must be imported, then it might be reasonable to take a month. Having no time provision in your contract creates uncertainty. For certainty, you should consider putting a start date and a finish date in your contract. Then everyone knows what to expect. Sometimes, you might need an extension of time and your contract should include a provision or two about that too.
TIME IS MONEY - OR IS IT?
Clearly, it is not reasonable to take a month to install a tap washer. In some circumstances that might be reasonable.
If you don’t have a written contract, you are leaving a lot to chance and that is never a good thing.
Many commercial contracts will have a provision for liquidated damages (LDs).

In some cases, quotes can be provided and accepted through the platform’s website or app. Some platforms also help to manage payments. Customers pay upfront via the platform, and when both the customer and tradie report that the job is complete the payment is released to the tradie. Other platforms provide services that are more limited to marketing and promotions.

Advertising and promotion
Some consumers are loyal to particular tradespeople due to excellent service provided in the past. Other consumers will choose a tradie based on other factors such as price, availability to attend to a job quickly, or the convenience of getting quotes online. How you promote your business and offer quotes could make a difference to your customer base. The online marketplace Consumers are increasingly using websites and apps to engage with businesses. This includes searching for a licensed tradie, checking independent reviews and requesting and accepting quotes. There are several platforms that help to connect tradespeople with consumers who are looking for trades services. If you’re considering signing up to an online marketplace, do some research first to find out how each process works and the costs involved for your business. The fees charged might include a monthly membership fee, directory fee, commission for each job or a flat fee per referral.
After considering the costs involved and the services provided by the platform, you can determine whether this will be suitable for your business.

Providing quotes It’s usually best to provide written quotes, so it’s clear what’s included and the likely extra costs. When providing quotes online, make sure you keep a copy for your records. This could be an email record, or for quotes provided via an online marketplace you could take a screenshot or print a copy.
Once a customer accepts your quote, you have a contract with them. Be aware that a 10-day cooling off period may apply in some circumstances. For example, if a customer asks you to quote for a garden irrigation system, they are not inviting you to sell them the system or related plumbing services. If you negotiate a sale at the time of providing the quote, this would be an unsolicited consumer agreement. You shouldn’t start any work or take any payment for 10 days. Once the job is complete, and if the customer is happy, they may post a favourable review online and provide positive feedback to their friends and family. ACCESSIBLE AND EQUITABLE CUSTOMER SERVICE FOR ALL SOUTH AUSTRALIANS 14

In May, SA Water presented its Wider World program at the 2022 Plumbing Roadshow. Through the Wider World program, SA Water is working to provide products and services that are accessible to all South IncludingAustralians.people who are living with a disability, customers experiencing vulnerability, culturally and linguistically diverse communities, and ageing customers. A one-size-fits-all approach doesn’t work for the utility because it excludes people who cannot access standard services and channels.

As licensed plumbers you can contribute to providing a higher level of support by undertaking disability inclusion training, getting approved or accredited to support customers living with disability or other specific needs, and include that expertise in advanced search filters on your website.
2. “Help make our complex lives easier” – people living with disability navigate multiple organisations, often fighting for their rights or on behalf of their loved ones.
3. “Be human” – for many of SA Water’s Wider World customers, organisations can appear to be a faceless entity. Human interaction, a single point of contact and simple touchpoints are incredibly important to them.

As a result, SA Water is now implementing a variety of short- and long-term actions that impact both workforce and customers including: • making communication, digital channels, worksites, and other public spaces more accessible • training for customer-facing teams to build empathy and understanding so they can adjust their interactions
Above: Brad Ruge, Ikshula Chopra, Christine Murphy and Nina Rampal from SA Water presenting the Wider World program at the 2022 Plumbing Roadshow.
While striving to achieve equitable and accessible products and services, SA Water’s workforce is providing more support to some customers so they can receive the same outcomes and experiences as others.
When these customers approach SA Water for human contact (on the phone or in person) it is because they need extra help.
4. “Keep us involved” – customers are grateful to be included, and impressed with SA Water’s work to date, and encourage the utility to take concrete actions.

1. “Give us choice” – there is no one-size-fits-all for customers with a disability as the barriers they face are diverse. All customers need and deserve choice in how they interact with service providers. Another way to work from rest is to regularly “pause” – even if only for 2 or 3 minutes, to review and plan/re-plan.
Adequate rest provides an anchor against the prevailing headwinds of busyness, ensuring focus and energy are directed to key areas of responsibility, where they will have maximum impact.
management anchor points by ray hodge

To help prevent running with the tides, try using anchor points. Make a list of the critical management areas you are responsible for and then drop these as anchor points into your calendar.
Most of us are aware working from rest is promoted by adequate sleep, diet, and exercise. However, the discipline to achieve this is a challenge for many. A helpful method I found was backing off.
A key responsibility of the leaders I coach is oversight of performance indicators - and it’s so easy during busy times to get distracted by the unrelenting tides of operational activity. Weeks pass quickly until the moment of realisation arrives or something goes wrong. To neglect the review of how projects are progressing or how the team is managing their load or if the sales pipeline is full can be detrimental to ongoing performance.
When I start to feel blown off-course and/or overwhelmed, I deliberately back off and slow my pace. I accept a lower rate of output and celebrate not stopping. Previously my auto-response was to increase the pace when overwhelmed, until exhaustion took over and stopping became inevitable. This ultimately didn’t help the quality and quantity of my output. Changing my approach steadied me and improved my Formereffectiveness.Formula
He went on to say that “sometimes the best way to raise our level of performance is to back off rather than to push even harder” (Stewart, 2009).
Review items completed (which is a powerful encourager and mood-booster), then plan the next priority actions.
Building on the above critical anchor points, it’s essential to take control of your time by establishing a routinised way of Forworking.example, the mornings might be given to your primary office related responsibilities and the afternoons to meetings and dealing with the email and phone requests from the morning. This routine provides stability and further ensures that we are fulfilling the most critical aspects of our role.
One racing driver, Jackie Stewart also found this to be true. He recounted a story where he and a colleague were leading the field in a race, when they were directed from the pits to ease-off the pace. He says, “the more we ‘eased off’, the faster our laps became.”
This helps to pace activity and build a sense of calm and space into each day. It’s also a great way to maintain energy levels. Introducing standardised agendas to routine meetings can be a powerful anchor point too, ensuring precious time isn’t wasted in unfocussed communication. 18
For example, each Tuesday morning, you might set aside half an hour to review your team’s productivity levels. Every Wednesday, you might allocate an hour to check in with each of your managers to see how they are travelling. Once a month, you might meet with your CFO to review the month’s performance. These calendar entries will serve as reminders to anchor you in the critical areas you are responsible for and ensure that, even in busy times, you are still fulfilling your management role. Even with these calendar anchors, many find their days become a blur of interruptions and requests, with to-do lists always seeming to be yet-to-be-done.
Rest provides the context for clear thinking … and cohesive actions (Hodge, 2021).

Anchor points can help ease even the most chaotic of times, so we stand a greater chance of meeting our performance requirements.
Being in a management role is demanding and leaders are called upon to manage huge loads with accompanying stress. Building anchor points provides a sense of order and the assurance that critical management tasks will be completed because they’ve been included in our schedules already; as has time for rest, self and other-care, review, planning, and learning.

1 Energy savings of up to 68% are based on Australian Government approved TRNSYS simulation modelling using a medium load in Zone 3 and apply when replacing an electric water heater of similar size with a Rheem 551270 Heat Pump water heater. Energy savings of up to and between 64% to 71% in Zone 1 to 5 on hot water energy consumption when replacing an electric water heater (min. 16 hours/day). Any savings will vary depending upon your location, type of water heater being replaced, hot water consumption and fuel tariff. The impact on an electricity account will depend on the tariff arrangement of the water heater being replaced and where you live. This Heat Pump water heater (climate dependent) is recommended for connection to either a 24 hour continuous tariff or an extended off-peak (min. 16 hours/day). If replacing an electric water heater greater than 250 litres, Heat Pump connection to a 24 hour continuous tariff is recommended. Before purchase consult your energy provider for more information on cost comparisons. 2 Eligibility, terms and conditions apply - please visit www.rheemrewards.com.au.
3 Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs) are a financial benefit to encourage the installation of solar water heaters provided under a Federal Government legislated scheme.
