Capturing the attention of Gen Z is no easy feat; keeping their attention can be even harder.
This is the challenge being tackled head on with a range of new ‘gamified’ features on the Construction Pathways website.
Construction Pathways, an initiative of Construction Skills Queensland (CSQ), promotes opportunities and careers in the construction industry. CSQ has enhanced the website’s functionality by building in gamified fun features. Using layouts and devices that borrow from Netflix, SEEK, and Temu, developers have created a set of new features to inject more interactivity into the site.
One of the most exciting features is a Careers Quiz, which gives visitors the ability to answer a set of short, fun questions that decide the best construction career suited to them. Another addition is a randomised (Temu-style) Career Selector, a gamified spinning wheel that allows the audience to try their luck and see what construction career they might land on.
Finally, the ‘Flix’ section is modelled off Netflix. Video content includes Construction Pathways events, and vlogs and profiles of those succeeding within the industry.
“Designed with students and young people in mind, the main aim of these new website features is to entertain these groups, keeping them more actively engaged on pages for longer, while promoting valuable information about the industry,” said CSQ Marketing Director Sue McCosker. The new features are now live on constructionpathways.com.au.
A reminder that the lead free transition period deadline is on 1 May 2026.
In 2022, the National Construction Code (NCC) Vol. 3 added a new clause for all copper-alloy plumbing products in contact with drinking water to meet a strict lead content limit of 0.25 percent.
The three-year transition period for industry to comply ends on 1 May 2026 – this means that from this date, only WaterMarked products will be authorised for use in drinking water plumbing applications. These products include (but are not limited to) storage hot water heaters, boiling water units, drinking fountains, ice dispensers, all backflow prevention devices, pressure control valves, TMVs, tempering valves, water hammer arrestors, and meters.
Other water-related products that are not in constant contact with drinking water are exempt from the lead-free requirements – eg. showerheads, washing machines and dishwashers, emergency eyewash/deluge showers, firefighting and sprinkler products, and irrigation products.
MPAQ has been closely monitoring and consulting with key stakeholders to understand the broader implications of the transition. However, we are encouraging industry to make use of any existing inventory stored in trucks, vans, or sheds as now is the time to use those products while
We’ve rolled out our notifiable work audit program for 2025–26, and it’s all about keeping plumbing standards high and safeguarding the public.
As part of this initiative, the QBCC will be conducting random audits of contracting licensees across Queensland, especially in areas where Form 4/4A registrations are low.
These audits help ensure that plumbing work is properly recorded and can be inspected if needed. Which means, making it easier to identify and fix any issues early – because prevention is better than cure.
To help you stay on top of things, the QBCC website has some handy tools and resources on notifiable work, an interactive checker to see if your job needs a Form 4, and tips on lodging Form 4/4A correctly.
If you’re selected for an audit, you’ll be asked to provide recent invoices. To make the process smooth, make sure your invoices:
• are clear to read (e.g. not blurry)
• include details about the work being done
• include the correct site address and building reference (if applicable).
Once your documents are in, a member of the QBCC audit team will review them and get in touch if they need anything else.
We know that most plumbers are doing the right thing, but even one case of someone cutting corners is one too many, especially in an industry facing a skills shortage.
This is why our role goes beyond enforcement. Through notifiable work audits, licensing and ongoing education, we’re here to help licensees stay informed, supported, and stay on track, while working to stamp out dodgy practices, which includes unlicensed contracting.
When unlicensed contractors take on work, it undermines the training, invested time, and resources that licensed plumbers put in, to do things the right way, taking food off the table of those who have done the hard yards. This is why we’ve made it easier to raise concerns or report wrongdoing – anonymously – through our updated complaints form.
And while we will do our best to act on the information provided anonymously through this process, our investigations team may need to reach out to ask for additional information, some of which may be identifiable. Notwithstanding this, we will do our utmost to maintain strict confidentiality throughout the process.
This is one of the ways we’re showing our commitment to taking feedback on board and looking for ways to improve how we support the industry.
It’s part of our ongoing effort to maintain the reputation of the plumbing profession, make it easier to do business with us and ensure that licensees feel heard, respected, and backed. Have something to report? Submit your complaint via my.qbcc.qld.gov.au/s/plumbing-and-drainage-complaint.
To make life a little easier for licensed plumbers, we’ve launched a new fact sheet that breaks down everything you need to know about preparing and submitting as-constructed drainage plans.
If you’re working on renovations, alterations, or additions to an existing building, these plans are essential. They help identify the location, depth, sizing, and connections of the sanitary drainage system. These are all critical details for getting the job done right and staying compliant.
And if your notifiable work involves changes to the sanitary drainage, remember you must attach an as-constructed plan with your Form 4.
The new fact sheet covers:
• when an as-constructed diagram is required
• what information needs to be included
• a clear example to guide your documentation.
It’s designed to help you meet your obligations with confidence and produce high-quality plans that meet QBCC standards.
We’ve just launched a suite of digital forms for plumbing on myQBCC. It’s a step forward in digitising our services – and delivering faster, more reliable outcomes for you.
What’s now available online?
You can now submit the following forms online, 24/7, via myQBCC:
• Refund request – Notifiable work cancellation
• Plumbing and drainage complaint
These forms are digital from start to finish – meaning no printing, scanning, or manual entry is required.
What’s in it for you?
• Quicker to complete and submit
• Built-in logic and validation to reduce errors
• Secure digital submission for faster processing
• Less back-and-forth for incomplete or incorrect forms.
PDF versions are still available for customers who prefer paper.
If you have any questions or are seeking further support on any of the above, Contact the QBCC on 139 333 or visit www.qbcc.qld.gov.au
A recent incident involving a gas-fired water heater highlights the critical importance of adhering to mandatory installation clearances.
In this case, the water heater was not installed at the required minimum distance, compromising its safe operation. Partial blockages in the flue, caused by mud wasp nests, further affected the heater’s performance. These obstructions led to unsafe flue operation and ultimately caused heat-related damage to the property, necessitating intervention by the Queensland Fire Department. While no injuries occurred, and the fire was contained, the potential for injury or property loss was significant.
• Gas appliances must be installed in accordance with the relevant safety requirements and the manufacturer’s instructions (including all mandatory minimum clearances)
• Adequate ventilation and clearances are critical for the safe operation of gas appliances
• Regular inspection and maintenance (in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions) is essential to prevent blockages from insects, debris or nesting materials
• Where gas work licence or authority holders identify non-compliance, gas system defect notices are required to be issued
• Non-compliant installations can result in appliances failing to operate safely under fault conditions increasing the risk of injury and fire/property damage. This can occur after years of apparently safe operation.

The rules for gas compliance plates are changing.
On 27 June 2025, the Petroleum and Gas (Production and Safety) legislation was amended to remove the requirement to fit gas compliance plates for gas systems supplied, or to be supplied, with fuel gas through a fuel gas network.
In addition, as of 1 July 2025, carbon copy gas system compliance certificate books are no longer available for purchase from Resources Safety and Health Queensland (RSHQ).
What
• Persons using hard-copy books are encouraged to continue using gas compliance plates until 1 January or stocks are depleted. Hard-copy books can continue to be used until 1 January 2026.
• Gas compliance plates remain available (at no cost) but cannot be used after 1 January 2026.
• Gas compliance plates for caravans are still required, but the type of plate has changed to the national plate detailed in section 10 of AS/NZS5601.2 Gas installations Part 2 LP Gas installations in caravans and boats for non-propulsive purposes. These can be purchased from gas equipment stockists.
• Compliance e-certificates, defect e-notices, and vehicle inspection e-certificates issued online are now free and can be requested from the RSHQ website.

On 29 July 2025, new obligations under the Work Health and Safety Regulation 2011 (Qld) came into effect.
All employers are now required to take extra steps to protect workers from hazardous noise exposure—a common risk in the plumbing industry. These changes bring Queensland in line with rules already in place in Victoria and New South Wales, and every business in Queensland must be ready.
Under Section 58 of the amended Regulation, any PCBU (Person Conducting a Business or Undertaking)—this includes sole traders, subcontractors, and business owners—are required to provide audiometric testing for workers who are required to wear hearing protection PPE.
From 29 July 2025, audiometric testing must be provided:
• Within three months of a worker starting noise-exposed work, and
• At least every two years thereafter
These changes are aimed at preventing noise-induced hearing loss, one of the most common (and preventable) workplace injuries among tradies.
Plumbers often work with or around:
• Jackhammers and concrete cutters
• Pressurised water jetters and grinders

• Pumps and mechanical plant
• Power tools in confined spaces
• Noisy construction sites
If your team is using hearing protection to meet noise exposure standards, these new rules apply to you.
Review your noise risk assessments – Identify high-noise tasks or environments common in your work and determine if workers are relying on PPE to reduce their exposure.
Update your WHS procedures – Clearly include audiometric testing in your safety policy and ensure new employees complete a hearing test within three months of starting relevant work.
Engage a qualified audiometric testing provider – Reach out to local providers to plan testing schedules and consider mobile testing units that can visit sites or depots.
Maintain accurate records – Keep records of test dates, results, and any follow-up actions. This is vital for demonstrating compliance during audits or inspections.
Failure to comply could result in penalties of up to 60 units (currently over $9,000). More importantly, it can lead to permanent hearing damage for your workers.
High-risk activities require SWMS. Generate compliant SWMS tailored to each job in under five minutes with the Master Plumbers’ Safety system, which is available at no additional cost to MPAQ members. If you haven’t yet, register for access by visiting www.mpaq.com.au/services/whs/mpsafety. Not yet a member? You can purchase the system for an annual fee.

In Queensland’s fast-evolving construction landscape, hydraulic consultants are increasingly turning to performance based solutions (PBS) to meet the growing demands of architects and developers.
As building designs become more complex and innovative, traditional prescriptive approaches in accordance with Deemed to Satisfy (DtS) provisions in the Australian Standards often fall short in accommodating the vision of modern architecture. In parallel, shifting construction methodologies and the growing focus on cost and program efficiency are further driving the adoption of performance-based approaches.
PBS are typically prepared for designs where definitions or descriptions in the standards are not covered, unclear, or can be proven that a more efficient design can be adopted. A PBS supports solutions that are tailored to meet or exceed the performance requirements of the National Construction Code (NCC), focusing on outcomes in terms of safety, functionality, sustainability, and cost-efficiency. It is important to note that PBS still need to meet the relevant performance requirements set out in the NCC.
Some examples of where a PBS may be required:
• Installation method – e.g. trenchless pipework outside the DtS provisions of AS/NZS 3500
• Alternative plumbing systems – Supertube, siphonic stormwater systems
• Reduction in pipe size – when supported by appropriate evidence such as modelling or usage data
• Designs outside the scope of the standards – box gutter design over 16L/s
• Extended floor waste depths – e.g. where structural elements such as beams require deeper floor waste installations to achieve adequate drainage.
A PBS offers a range of advantages that make it an increasingly valuable approach in modern plumbing projects. One of the key benefits is design flexibility. A PBS can allow hydraulic systems to be tailored to suit complex architectural layouts and site-specific constraints, enabling alignment with the broader design intent of a project.
This approach also fosters innovation by supporting the use of modern technologies, alternative materials, and system configurations that may not be recognised under traditional deemed-to-satisfy pathways. As a result, consultants can deliver more efficient and forward-thinking outcomes.
Sustainability is another significant advantage. Performance based solutions often lead to improved environmental performance, allowing for smarter water use and greater efficiency that contribute to lower environmental impact.
PBS allow for highly customised, project-specific solutions that better reflect the real-world demands of a site or client brief. While deviating from prescriptive standards, well-prepared PBS still meet, and in many cases exceed the performance requirements of the NCC. When supported by strong technical justification, these solutions give both regulators and stakeholders confidence in the safety, functionality, and compliance of the final system.
While a PBS allows for innovation, it must be approached with caution. Poorly conceived or insufficiently supported solutions can result in noncompliance, safety concerns, costly rework, and potential litigation.
Key risks include:
• Insufficient technical justification or documentation
• Lack of clarity on how performance requirements are achieved.
• Over-reliance on supplier claims without independent validation
To mitigate these risks, it’s critical that PBS are developed with a thorough understanding of the NCC, supported by technical evidence, and peer-reviewed where necessary. Collaboration between hydraulic consultants, architects, certifiers, and plumbing contractors from the early design stages can also help ensure smoother approvals and robust outcomes.
It is important to note that the PBS is valid as long as it continues to meet the relevant performance requirements of the NCC. There is no expiry date; however, the PBS must remain applicable to actual conditions and use of the building.
To mitigate the risks involved, it’s critical that a PBS is:
• Developed with a sound understanding of the NCC
• Backed by professional judgment, modelling, and/or verified performance data
• Peer-reviewed or validated through collaboration with authorities and certifiers
• Clearly documented and communicated to all relevant stakeholders
As architectural and construction demands in Queensland continue to evolve, the need for agile, forward-thinking plumbing designs is greater than ever. Performance based solutions provide the bridge between creative ambition and practical implementation, ensuring that projects meet both regulatory requirements and design intent. Ideally, PBS should be prepared in advance of construction and not as a reactive measure to resolve issues onsite.
To truly succeed, these solutions must be developed with diligence, technical accuracy, and a commitment to compliance. A poorly executed PBS can carry significant risk, which is why a disciplined, collaborative, and welldocumented approach is vital. A PBS can unlock smarter solutions, enable better project outcomes, and support the continued advancement of the hydraulics industry.

For most plumbers, the daily grind is juggling multiple jobs and tight schedules, unpredictable weather and traffic conditions, and the occasional stubborn customer. But for Dylan Smith, educational team leader at TAFE, his most recent “job site” was a little different—only the coldest place on the planet: Antarctica.
In 2023, Dylan packed his tools, thermal gear, and sense of adventure for a six-month placement at the Davis Research Station, one of Australia’s three permanent research bases on the icy continent. It was a rare opportunity to take his plumbing skills to the most remote and extreme environment on Earth.
Dylan’s Antarctic escapade was actually 10 years in the making. He remembered he was just fresh out of his apprenticeship, sitting at a mate’s house, when he first filled out the application form to go.
“I was just trying to answer some of the questions and it became apparent quite quickly that I was not remotely qualified or had the skill set to do this job,” he shares with a laugh. “So I ended up putting it on the back burner and focused on being a tradesman. Five or six years later, I revisited it, but I still ended up not submitting my application then. I couldn’t commit.”
During this time, Dylan worked for a couple of people before eventually starting his own business. It was a path familiar for many tradies and plumbers, but it soon became clear that it wasn’t Dylan’s. He ended up closing his plumbing business in about a year before finding his way to TAFE.
“I did shut down my business because it was full on, and I was quite young. It’s a lot of work. And then Blair, who I used to work with and is one of the teachers here, would talk about how good it was and how awesome it was working with students at TAFE,” shares Dylan. “It’s quite satisfying, you know, when you get those groups that pass. It’s the same as taking on an apprentice when you’re on the tools. It’s investing in that next generation of plumbers.”
While Dylan enjoyed his new career in education, life found a way to get him back onto the path to Antarctica. In 2022, he found himself submitting the application, going through all the technical, medical, and psychological tests, and on a boat to Antarctica.
Among the 50-something people who were stationed at Davis Station, eight of those were plumbers. Dylan was part of the maintenance half, who looked after water lines, tapware, kitchen, sewage treatment, HVAC, and plant rooms. The others focused on new pipework and building installation.
You’d imagine some sort of frozen toilet or pipe getting in Dylan’s way, but he says it’s surprisingly pretty straightforward maintenance work, just like back at home.
“It doesn’t really change per se because we’re mostly still inside. We are more of a supporting crew to keep everything operational and running,” Dylan shares. “For example, a standard day for us was starting at 7:30 in the morning. We’d go to the sheds for a pre-start to talk about what’s going on for the day. We’d either work with someone, depending on what was going on, or by yourself. Apart from the daily work, we also had an on-call roster. There were three plumbers that were on call, so we rotated each week, in case something came up,” Dylan shares.
The plumbing work was pretty much second-nature for Dylan, but the real experience was the day-to-day living in such an extreme environment, with strangers he found himself getting very close to, almost like family.
“The experience alone is amazing, but the people made everything as well,” Dylan shares. “The amount of times that you can just sort of walk up to someone and be like, ‘Do you want to go do this, play darts or ping pong?’ People would put movies on and you could just pop in and watch Jaws. You get to know quite a lot of people quite well over that course of time living with them.”
And like a regular family, everyone would also have chores to do on a rotating schedule.
“Everyone would chip in for chores, do the dishes, tidy up the kitchen. On a Saturday morning, you’d have station duties. Because
there were no cleaners, it makes sense for you to keep your living space tidy,” Dylan adds.
Of course, one can’t talk about working and living in Antarctica without talking about the extreme weather. Dylan shares they were there for Antarctic summer, which meant there were days where the weather was pretty good at nine degrees Celsius. But there were days when it could get pretty brutal with winds and temperatures of -18 degrees and you’d feel terrible for the people who were stuck outside trying to finish their work on days like that.
Then there were days where you had the most amazing time exploring a place that only one in a million people will have the opportunity to see in their lifetime.
“There was one weekend we had off when we did a 40-kilometre hike over three days. It’s not something you can see anywhere else in the world,” says Dylan.
For many, the six-month stint was a once in a lifetime opportunity. But for Dylan, he doesn’t plan on stopping there. He shares he’s already applied to go down again. In fact, he encourages other plumbers and tradies to apply and experience it for themselves.
Every year, the Australian Antarctic Program needs hundreds of tradespeople to work at their Antarctic and sub-Antarctic stations. Recruitment starts in November and roles include carpenters, mechanics, plumbers, plant operators, and communications technicians. This presents an incredible opportunity to experience an amazing place, use your trade skills, and live in a close community where everyone looks after each other.
For more information and to get an email when recruitment starts, visit jobs.antarctica.gov.au.

The main changes affect the number of PLP days available, and the introduction of superannuation contributions via the Australian Taxation Office (ATO). Employers should be aware of these updates to support employees and meet compliance obligations.
From 1 July 2025, the number of Parental Leave Pay (PLP) days available through Services Australia increased from 110 to 120 days per family or for a single parent. This equates to 24 weeks, based on a five-day work week.
Further changes are scheduled, with the PLP days increasing again to 130 days (26 weeks) from 1 July 2026.
Employees can continue to use PLP days flexibly. The leave can be taken as:
• A single block
• Multiple smaller blocks
• Individual days
• A combination of blocks and single days
Employee couples (not necessarily working for the same employer) can now take up to 20 PLP days at the same time, doubling the previous allowance of 10 shared days. Some exemptions may apply.
From 1 July 2025, the weekly rate of PLP will rise in line with the National Minimum Wage to $948.00 gross per week.
A significant change is the introduction of superannuation contributions on PLP:
• From 1 July 2025, super contributions will be made on PLP for children born or adopted on or after this date.
• These contributions are known as the Paid Parental Leave Superannuation Contribution on the Australian Taxation Office website.
• Contributions will be paid after the financial year ends, directly into the employee’s nominated super fund.
• No separate claim is required—Services Australia and the ATO will handle this automatically.
• Contributions will be made at the Superannuation Guarantee (SG) rate applicable for that year.
More information is available via the ATO’s website: www.ato.gov.au.
In some circumstances, employers are required to make PLP payments to eligible employees and will be reimbursed by Services Australia.
An employer must provide PLP if the employee:
• Has worked for the employer for at least 12 months prior to the birth or adoption
• Is based in Australia
• Requests a minimum eight-week block of PLP (weekdays only)
• Will remain employed until at least the end of that block
• Is receiving their first PLP payment for that child
• Commences PLP within 12 months of the child’s birth or adoption
• Requests consecutive weekdays only (no breaks or weekends)
If the above criteria are not met, then Services Australia will pay the employee directly.
In situations involving a stillbirth or infant death, employees can also request payment directly from Services Australia.
If required to make PLP payments, employers must:
• Withhold PAYG tax as per usual arrangements
• Deduct child support if applicable
• Are not required to make additional superannuation contributions (but may choose to do so voluntarily)
Employers are encouraged to review their parental leave policies and payroll systems to ensure they reflect these changes.
Supporting employees through parental leave transitions not only ensures compliance but helps foster a family-friendly and inclusive workplace. For more details, visit www.servicesaustralia.gov.au or speak with the MPAQ Advisory team on 07 3273 0800 or email advice@mpaq.com.au.

There is a very important difference between the nature of progress payments and variation payments that is not fully understood by some contractors.
It is a well-known principle of building law that progress payments made under a contract are payments on account. They are not conclusive and can be re-adjusted at the end of the project. A Principal may approve and pay a progress claim during the job but still reclaim some or all of it once the final account is settled.
While a contract could, in theory, prevent a Principal from reversing approved progress claims, it is virtually unheard of in Australia for a Principal to agree to surrender that right.
Can a Principal also “reverse” variations that have been approved and paid?
This issue was recently discussed by the New South Wales Supreme Court, where a Principal attempted to treat variations as though they were merely payments on account. The court rejected this, confirming that variations are not in the same category as progress claims.
The reasoning was straightforward. Under the contract, the builder was obliged to carry out variation works once directed, even before a price was agreed. Having done the work, the builder was entitled to be paid in accordance with the contract.
This approach is not new. As far back as 1876, the House of Lords considered a dispute where unforeseen site conditions required additional work. The court recognised that, if the work fell within the type of variations contemplated by the contract, the contractor was obliged to perform it and equally entitled to payment.
In principle, it is clear that once a variation is approved and paid in the usual course, the Principal cannot later demand the money back.
This general rule assumes the contract contains a standard variation clause obliging the contractor to carry out directed work and entitling them to payment.
Some contracts differ. For example, Master Builders Association of Queensland contracts provide that the builder is not required to undertake variations. Still, once a builder agrees to perform a variation, the same principle applies – the Principal cannot reverse payment later.
Where there is no variation clause at all, the contractor is not obliged to perform extra work unless the Principal enters into a new agreement to pay for it.
Despite this being the position generally, there would be nothing to prevent a Principal from contracting their way out of the usual position that variations once paid remain paid, by presenting a contractor with a contract which provides that any approved and paid variations are only paid on account. With such a clause, the Principal could later “reverse” the decision to pay a variation and claim back the variation payment.
Why would any contractor sign a contract that included such a provision?
Often because they assume the contract is “standard” and fail to notice, or understand, an unusual clause. Unfortunately, this is how contractors get caught out, by signing without carefully reviewing the details or seeking legal advice.
Contractors should never assume that all variation payments are safe. Careful contract review is essential to avoid surprises at the end of a project. For queries, please contact the author or any member of Cornwalls Building & Construction team.

Have you ever caught yourself asking, “Why does my apprentice do things that way?” or thinking, “It feels like we’re speaking completely different languages!”
You’re not alone—and the answer often lies in generational differences.
We’re in a unique period where four to five generations may be working side by side in the same organisation:
• Baby Boomers
• Generation X
• Millennials (Generation Y)
• Generation Z
• Generation Alpha (just starting to enter the workforce)
Each generation has its own values, communication styles, and workplace expectations, shaped by the world they grew up in. These differences can sometimes cause friction — but they also offer valuable opportunities for collaboration, innovation, and mentorship.
“Generational differences” typically refer to the variations in attitudes, values, behaviours, communication styles, work ethics, and expectations among people born in different time periods. These differences often come into play in workplaces, schools, families, and social settings.
GENERATIONAL DIFFERENCE IN THE WORKPLACE
Workplace Role: Senior leaders, mid-level managers
Work Values & Expectations: Independence, efficiency, work-life balance
Communication Style: Direct, email, practical
Technology Use: Functional users; adopt if efficient
Learning Style: Self-directed, real-world application
Feedback Preference: Occasional, honest, informal
/ GENERATION Y (1981–1996)
Workplace Role: Mid-career professionals, team leads
Work Values & Expectations: Purpose-driven, feedback-rich, growth opportunities
Communication Style: Informal, digital messaging, video calls
Technology Use: Tech-savvy; expect digital tools
Learning Style: On-demand, collaborative, microlearning
Feedback Preference: Frequent, coaching-style feedback (a few times per week)
GENERATION Z (1997–2012)
Workplace Role: Early-career professionals, interns
Work Values & Expectations: Stability, mental health support, social impact, inclusion
Communication Style: Instant messaging, short-form video, informal Technology Use: Digital natives; mobile-first, expect intuitive UX

Managing generational differences isn’t about catering to stereotypes or creating separate rules — it’s about recognising the unique strengths, experiences, and expectations each generation brings to the table.
By embracing these differences, business owners and leaders can:
• Foster stronger communication and collaboration
• Build more inclusive, adaptable teams
• Create environments where everyone feels valued and understood
Do not assume one generation’s way is the ‘right’ way or using a one size fits all approach to motivation and rewards. Understanding generational diversity will help grow your business and add value by actively listening, engaging, learning, and adapting to the unique perspectives of each generation.
Understanding the differences is the first step. Respect and adaptability are what carry it forward.
MPAQ members who need support managing generational differences can call the MPAQ workplace relations team on 07 3273 0800.
MPAQ is pleased to announce the update of our Workplace Behaviour Training video, now available on your member dashboard. These updates reflect recent amendments to key legislation, including the Sex Discrimination Act 1984, Preventing Sexual Harassment in the Workplace, and the Work Health and Safety Regulation 2011 (Qld).
A healthy, respectful workplace is not only essential for the wellbeing of your employees but is also vital for your business’s success. Discrimination, bullying, and harassment can lead to serious consequences, both legally and within the workplace. Many forms of such behaviour are considered criminal offences, placing businesses under a legal responsibility to prevent harm and create a safe environment.
By fostering a supportive and respectful workplace culture, you can promote high levels of productivity, where all employees feel valued and can thrive. To assist you in achieving this, MPAQ has developed this updated Workplace Behaviour Training video. It is a valuable resource for both new staff onboarding and ongoing staff training.

That new restaurant everyone’s raving about? You probably already saw that on Tiktok. Looking for a new hairdresser? Check their portfolio on Instagram first. Public holiday hours for that local bakery you’ve been wanting to visit? Maybe better to check if they’re open on their Facebook page.
Today, social media is as essential to every person and every business like a telephone number or an email address. There is much to be said about how it has transformed the way we interact with people, consume content, and view the world today – for the good and for the bad. But it is undeniable that many have seen success in seizing the limitless opportunities in this new technology.
And some of these stories are not just built on algorithms alone, they are built on the relentless ambition and hard work of passionate humans – such as Shaun Ridley of Moral Service.
Shaun’s journey into plumbing didn’t begin with a family legacy, like many others in the trade. His career in trade started in carpentry, before finding his way to plumbing through his rugby league coach. That hands-on experience quickly turned into an apprenticeship, and by 21, Shaun had earned his contractor’s licence and launched Moral Service.
“One of the things I’ve always loved doing is working with my hands and expressing my creativity with my hands. So that kind of led me into the trade industry in general,” he explains. “But I’ve also personally just always been into business. I’ve created heaps of little businesses ever since I was a young kid. So starting a plumbing company was a natural next step for me.”
Shaun’s digital presence only really started recently, in the early days of 2023.
“And it started because I was looking at other young people killing it on the online space. They were monetising whatever they were doing, and I thought, ‘I’ve got to jump on this. There’s no reason I can’t achieve what they’re achieving,’” said Shaun.
That motivation was the spark he needed to jumpstart Moral Service’s online presence. In the beginning, he thought he was just making videos to get more customers to his business. But along the way, he realised that most of his audience were also fellow tradies or even younger people who were considering a career in trades.
“I’ve literally had some lads message me saying, ‘I started my plumbing company because of you guys.’ So it’s sort of evolved into this bigger movement that brings me a lot of excitement and purpose. And I say to the boys, ‘we no longer only work for a paycheck; we work for a purpose,’” shares Shaun.
Today, @moral_lads has more than a hundred thousand followers and 2.4 million likes on Tiktok. On Instagram, his reels would rake in millions of views. The secret to his success? It’s not fancy gear or viral tricks—although those are very helpful too, in this age of algorithm. He said it was two things –consistency and authenticity.
He makes it look easy and natural, but social media is a lot of hard work. The consistency to always keep doing it, to always try something new, and to always learn new things is in the DNA of every reel on his page.
“Just like anything else, whether you do get into a trade or you take up a new hobby, the more time you’re in the game and the more practice you have, the better and easier it’s going to become. I’m still learning. Every video I post, there’s always some back-end testing. I’m seeing how the algorithm responds,
how people respond, and then I’m always adjusting. So there’s no shortcut. You just have to start, see what doesn’t work, make the adjustments, find what does work, and then keep adapting,” he explains.
The other part of it was finding his voice in the sea of endless reels, and making sure he doesn’t lose sight of that every step of the way.
“Authenticity is everything,” he says. “If you’re just copying what others do online, people can tell. But if you bring your own style and personality, that’s what works. I love being in front of the camera. I love coming up with concepts and ideas and getting the reaction and joy from people watching it.”
And if you scroll through his videos, his content isn’t rehearsed or overproduced; it’s honest, light-hearted, and filled with moments that showcase the reality of the trade. From pulling apart busted pipes to joking with his team, the audience gets to see the human side of plumbing. That blocked stormwater drain? Those burst pipes that need to be unearthed from under the house? That leak that’s being a pain to find? He is showing that plumbers are always drawing from years of study and training and expertise to fix things inside and around people’s homes.
When asked about the direction that Moral Service is heading, Shaun is excited to share that he has developed an AI-powered app called Tradie AI, a 24/7 agent built for tradies and apprentices to elevate their careers using AI-powered tools.
“AI is shaking up the industry as we all know. And I think if you’re not learning how to use AI and how to implement it into your company or your personal life or career, you’re definitely falling behind,” says Shaun.
AI is shaking up the industry as we all know. And I think if you’re not learning how to use AI and how to implement it into your company or your personal life or career, you’re definitely falling behind.
Shaun has shown that plumbers can be adept in more than just construction tools. The digital and creative tools he has on his belt speak highly of what he’s accomplished for Moral Service. And if there is to be learned about his success story, it’s seizing the opportunities as they come, staying true to your most authentic self, and using the right tools—whether it’s pipe wrenches or pixels on the screen.

The MPAQ Business Leaders Group has continued its momentum in 2025 with impactful events focused on leadership, collaboration, and industry growth.
In February, members came together for a strategic roundtable at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre. The group explored the political landscape post-2024 state election and how government is supporting the building and construction industry, with insights from Steve Koch, Deputy Director-General for the Department of Customer Services, Open Data, and Small and Family Business; and The Hon. Sam O’Connor, Minister for Housing and Public Works and Minister for Youth.
In April, a federal election-focused workshop unpacked potential impacts on the plumbing and gas sector. Then in May, a networking night co-hosted with AHSCA QLD at The Ballpark Portside brought together leaders from the plumbing and hydraulics design industries. These varied settings have been ideal for relationship-building and meaningful cross-sector discussions, all supported by our valued group partners.
These events continue to deliver on the group’s core purpose: bringing senior professionals together to tackle challenges, explore ideas, and raise standards across the industry.
With more to come—including a ministerial roundtable in September—the MPAQ Business Leaders Group remains a space where forward-thinking business owners and managers can connect, grow, and lead.

Plumbers are increasingly seen as the go-to experts for ensuring safe, clean water in homes and businesses—especially as awareness and concerns grow around emerging contaminants such as microplastics and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), commonly referred to as “forever chemicals”. With traditional filtration systems often struggling to tackle these invisible hazards, the demand for advanced solutions is on the rise.
Zip Water’s MicroPurity filtration addresses these concerns, offering certified reduction of the eight most harmful contaminants, including an impressive 99.4% reduction of PFAS*. This ensures that a Zip HydroTap can deliver the highest quality drinking water solution for homes and workplaces.
PFAS are synthetic chemicals that have raised global concerns due to their persistence in the environment and potential health risks. They don’t easily break down, consequently accumulating in water sources over time. While activated carbon and reverse osmosis have been standard solutions, their
Australian Standard AS/NZS 4233.1:1:2013 has jetter machines divided up between class A units and class B units. Aussie Pumps’ Class A King Cobra, 5000 PSI and 16 LPM is the star of the class A range.
The King Cobra comes in a beautifully sculpted stainless-steel frame. It is available either in trolley form or what they call ‘cube’, suitable for mounting on the back of utilities, trailers, or trucks. Jetters can be easily secured in transit, with the easy bolt-down Aussie COBRA-LOC. The machines now have stainless steel reels; even the COBRA-LOC is stainless.
Aussie Pumps offers a free Safe Jetter Operator course for operators of Class A machines, and this course is being used by Jetter operators in a wide range of fields. A good example is local government bodies, plumbers, and commercial applications like livestock sale yards, feedlots, and food processing plants.
“The Aussie Jetters are so versatile, beautiful to look at, and powered by Honda two cylinder electric start petrol engine. Everything we do in Jetter design is about the plumber who’s going to use the product,” Aussie Pumps Chief Engineer, John Hales.
“Every machine goes through our new two-million-dollar test rig before being shipped. We build class B units too, but class A versions are much more popular and significantly less expensive!” said Hales. For further information, contact Australian Pump Industries, authorised dealers, and authorised plumbing outlets throughout Australia. You can also visit aussiepumps.com.au or call 02 8865 3500.

In the world of plumbing and infrastructure, innovation is key to tackling the challenges of aging systems beneath the ground.
Nuflow Central Queensland, a family-owned business, is leading the charge by using advanced UV liner technology to restore aging manholes from the inside out—minimising disruption to local communities.
For years, repairing underground infrastructure meant extensive excavation, lengthy projects, and community chaos. Now, however, Nuflow CQ offers a smarter, more advanced, and efficient alternative. Instead of digging up and replacing old structures, a special liner is inserted into the existing manhole and cured in place using UV light. This process creates a new internal layer that is strong, durable, and watertight without the need for destructive digging.
To showcase this innovative technology, Nuflow CQ recently partnered with Southern Relining to host an Open Day for local Central Queensland councils, where they provided a firsthand look at how this advanced UV liner can solve complex aging system issues. The demonstration showed how the technology saves councils significant time and money while reducing community disruption and environmental impact.
Nuflow CQ is committed to the ongoing modernisation of infrastructure repair in Central Queensland. Their advanced UV liner technology provides a permanent, efficient solution for aging manholes, allowing councils to maintain their assets with minimal impact on their budgets and communities. It is the first of its kind in Queensland, and for the 1500-mm manhole, a first in Australia.

The stormwater management landscape in Australia is rapidly evolving, driven by the need for faster installation, improved safety, and better environmental outcomes. Traditional concrete drainage pits remain common on job sites, but they come with long install times, heavy handling requirements, and sustainability drawbacks.
In response to these challenges, RELN Group Australia has introduced the Civil Edge Pit™ - a lightweight, modular drainage system designed to reduce labour, cut installation time, and meet tough Australian conditions. Developed with input from plumbers and civil contractors, it is built for the real-world demands of modern construction.
RELN has built a reputation for delivering smart, functional solutions for drainage and water management. The Civil Edge Pit™ is the latest in that tradition - designed from the ground up to offer a compliant, cost-effective alternative.
“We saw that traditional systems were slowing projects down,” says RELN’s product development team. “Installers needed something lighter, faster, and easier to manage without compromising on strength or compliance.”
The result is a fully compliant drainage system that’s quick to install, transport-friendly, and adaptable across a wide range of applications.
The Civil Edge Pit™ is up to 17 times lighter than concrete, making it dramatically easier to move and position. One person can handle installation - no crane, rigging, or heavy lifting required. The system features anti-flotation feet and a galvanised steel frame for secure placement and structural stability. And because it does not require concrete encasement*, the time and labour savings are immediate. For tradespeople and contractors managing multiple installs, it offers a clear efficiency advantage especially where labour shortages or tight deadlines are in play.
Despite its lightweight construction, the Civil Edge Pit performs like a heavyweight. It’s available in load ratings from Class A to Class D, making it suitable for:
Residential driveways
Commercial car parks
Pedestrian walkways
Light commercial developments
Trafficable areas with appropriate grates
Environmental performance is increasingly a part of every build brief. The Civil Edge Pit™ is manufactured from high-quality recycled materials, aligning with sustainability targets while still delivering the
structural integrity required for public and private infrastructure projects. It also brings efficiencies to logistics. Lightweight parts are easier to transport, store and deploy, reducing the environmental impact of freight and machinery use on site
Plumbers, landscape professionals, and civil crews are already adopting the Civil Edge Pit™ as a go-to product for faster installs. Its modular design and off-the-shelf availability streamline everything from planning through to handover. With fewer delays, simpler setups, and broad compatibility, it keeps projects moving.
Importantly, the system meets AS3996 requirements across all relevant load classes and has been tested in Australian conditions—giving confidence to engineers, site managers and regulators alike.
As supply chain issues, labour shortages and environmental expectations continue to shape the construction sector, smart product choices can make all the difference. The Civil Edge Pit™ is an example of how local innovation is helping the industry meet modern challenges head-on.
Whether you are a plumber, civil contractor, or project manager, this is a drainage system that delivers strength, speed, and simplicity with no compromise on quality or compliance.

Employers, have you got an employee who has finished their apprenticeship recently and completed either a Certificate III in Plumbing or Certificate III in Gas Fitting within the last 12 months? Have they applied for their interim gas work licence yet?
An interim gas work licence may be issued where the applicant has not yet demonstrated that they have the competencies and experience to hold a full gas work licence.
An interim gas work licence authorises you to install, remove, alter, repair, service, and test a gas system in relation to a type A gas device. This allows an interim licence holder to carry out most types of gas work while completing the requirements to progress to a full gas work licence.
An interim licence holder:
• must ensure that any gas system installation work is appropriately overseen and certified by the holder of a full gas work licence holder; and
• cannot carry out inspections and certification of recreational or commercial vehicle gas systems.
An interim licence holder must have the required qualifications and experience to hold a gas work licence. These required units of competency are from the CPC32720 Certificate III in Gas Fitting or CPC32420 Certificate III in Plumbing or equivalent units from the previous training packages.
To apply for an interim gas work licence, you must follow these steps:
1. Understand your legal obligations and safety requirements
2. Decide which licence you will need
3. Check the required qualifications, experience, and currency needed
4. Prepare your supporting documents
5. Complete the application form
Visit the Application and Information for Gas Work Licence page on the Business Queensland website for more information.
Students wishing to progress from an interim gas licence to a full gas licence in Queensland are required to complete four Certificate IV competencies while their interim gas licence is still valid.
To apply to progress from an interim licence to a full gas work licence, an individual must:
1. Be a suitable person to hold a licence
2. Hold an interim gas work licence that is current or expired within the last 12 months
3. Hold the following required units of competency:
• CPCPCM4011 Carry out work-based risk control processes
• CPCPCM4012 Estimate and cost work
• CPCPGS4011 Design and Size Consumer Gas Installations
• *CPCPGS4022 Service Type A gas appliances
*Service Type A gas appliances also has prerequisite units that must be completed prior to enrolling in the CPCPGS4022 Service Type A gas appliances unit. If you completed your apprenticeship after 2013, you may already hold the required prerequisite units.
4. Have completed the practical experience as specified below:
• Minimum practical experience (hours, jobs, and types of activities)
J 60 hours practical experience carrying out gas work
J 10 of the 60 hours may be in a simulated work environment.
J Note: Simulated work is in addition to any practical activities you complete during your training. This is above and beyond any practical work you complete during your training. It is up to you to discuss options with the RTO teacher for signing this off.
• 10 different jobs covering at least the following types of activities:
J Installing consumer gas piping
J Testing and purging consumer gas piping
J Installing gas pressure control equipment (including commissioning)
J Installing a gas device (including commissioning)
J Servicing and/or repairing a gas device
If you meet the qualifications and experience requirements but do not meet the currency requirements, you will need to pass the approved Gas Work Trade Test at a participating RTO before lodging an application. This is to check that your skills are current before the Resources Safety and Health Queensland (RSHQ) will accept your licence application.
If you meet all the requirements, you may lodge an application for a gas work licence.
If you don’t already have an interim gas licence and wish to apply for an interim gas licence or have other questions, please contact the RSHQ office directly through email on gaslicence@rshq.qld.gov.au or phone on (07) 3330 4249.
For further information, please do not hesitate to contact the Training Services Team on 07 3273 0800 or email training@mpaq.com.au.

Valued Life Member Mervyn Moor was born in Toowoomba and attended Newton State School. He served his apprenticeship with Vince O’Neill alongside Jack Hogan, with whom he later formed a business partnership that would last twenty-one years. Merv would carry on the business Moor’s Plumbing before handing over to his nephew Jim Gurski. Hogan and Moor were Foundation Members of the Toowoomba Division, which was formed in 1953.
Merv served as Division Chair (1983-1964 and 1972-1973) and Secretary (1966-67).
Merv represented the Association on local industry bodies such as the Regional Advisory Committee to the Industry and Training Commission, the Building Trades Coordinating Group, and Toowoomba Regional Group Apprenticeship Scheme.
He was presented with a “Certificate of Appreciation” in 1974, served on the MPAQ State Council from 1980-1981, and was honoured with Life Membership in 1986.
He married Hilda in 1959, a happy marriage until Hilda passed away fourteen years ago. They attended many State Conferences and travelled extensively in Australia and overseas.
Merv was also a keen gardener and nurtured a “bowling green” standard lawn. He once entered the Carnival of Flowers without success; however, viewing the photos of his flowers at his funeral would have given his competition “a run for their money”.
President Kent Vickers delivered a fitting tribute at the service.
He was an avid bird enthusiast who would rescue injured birds and nurse them to recovery to become lifelong friends.
Merv and Hilda were wonderful company to be with, and the Association extends deepest sympathy to the extended family.
Written by Bruce Wallace, MPAQ’s Honorary Historian
MPAQ extends its sincere condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of Jim Gurski, a highly respected member of the Toowoomba plumbing community, who sadly passed away recently. Jim was known as a dedicated and skilled tradesman. His plumbing career began during his time in the army. Jim’s uncle, Merv Moor, MPAQ Life Member, passed down Moor’s Plumbing to Jim. He built a strong reputation for quality workmanship and integrity. Under Jim’s leadership, the business maintained its strong reputation, and he became a mentor to many apprentices. Those who trained under him recall him with deep respect, describing Jim as both an excellent tradesman and a generous teacher.
Jim was actively involved with MPAQ over many years, contributing his knowledge, passion, and leadership to the industry. His service to the Association included:
Chairman: 1978–79, 1994–95, 1995–96
Junior Vice Chairman: 1990–91
Beyond plumbing, Jim had a love for beekeeping. At his funeral, the RSL honoured him for his national service, delivering a fitting and dignified tribute that reflected the high regard in which he was held.
Jim will be remembered not only for his professional excellence but also for his commitment to his community, his warmth, and his generous spirit. His legacy will live on in the Toowoomba plumbing community and among all who had the privilege of working alongside him.
Rest in peace, Jim.
