AT THE HELM VICE COMMODORE'S MESSAGE Dear Fellow Members

When I was approached by our past Commodores, Messrs. B.Balakrishnan and Tan Kay Toh to serve on the Management Committee of the Republic of Singapore Yacht Club, what was furthest from my mind was that I had to be nominated and elected into office. I thought 1 could just be co-opted into one of the sub-committees and serve my time. I had just stepped down as President of the Singapore Sailing Federation after 12 years at its helm and wanted to do something different. I had my trepidations because I was not sure how I could contribute or

value add what was considered a club that was already meeting my basic needs of providing me a place to visit for my meals with my family and friends and the occasional functions to attend and participate. Founded in 1826, RSYC's history has always impressed me and this was further confirmed when I later read my copy of "Three Burgees: A History of the Republic of Singapore Yacht Club". There was no turning back. The lure of being involved with a club with such a long history and the impressive legacy that it has, was just too tempting. So here I am elected as your Vice Commodore to serve you and the needs of the Club as we continue the journey to uphold the legacy and to embark on refining and refreshing the Club to seek relevance in a fast-changing club-lifestyle environment in Singapore and the region. 1 thank you for the support and the mandate you have given me and look forward to working together with each and everyone.

One of the great strengths of any organisation is its impressive history. We sometimes want to ignore it and take that for granted. RSYC is no exception. "Three Burgees" is a great tribute to its members for upholding the Club all through its 184 years, its strong legacy has developed a unique RSYC culture and personality and we must work together as one family to preserve and protect them. It has struck a cord on me and I am sure if you read the history of RSYC it will too and make you want to cherish the Club as your own.

Having said that, it is also important that we do not just sit on our history and gloat about it but use that as the launching pad for us to move the Club forward to meet changing lifestyles and members' needs. We have to be relevant and stay nimble fooled to keep pace with the fast changing world of club management and the competitive lifestyles that are being offered both by other clubs and the external environment.

RSYC's dependence on the members is paramount in the decisions that the management committee and management staff members make. Without the members, we are nothing. Without members feeling for the Club we will have a difficult task to move the Club forward together. Without members' feedback we will be operating in a vacuum which will not serve us well.

Thus I urge my fellow members to come together and work together as we push forward with some impressive plans for expansion and development which will be unveiled over the next six months. We want to make RSYC

a club which will give us an experience that is second to none and a club that has a long history, yet can stay relevant to today's lifestyle needs and meet members' expectations. Low Tec Ping Vice Commodore

AT THE HELM GENERAL MANAGER'S MESSAGE Dear Members,

With the RSYC Regatta 2010 successfully completed, we are proud to congratulate the winning teams: Team Windsikher in IRC A Class, Team Shoon Fung Too in IRC B Class, Team Todak 2 in PY Class, and Team Angel in One Design - J24 Class. The efforts by the Regatta Organising Committee, chaired by Rear Commodore Karl Nilssen, are highly commendable.

We would also like to thank members for their support in our jackpot promotion where the winning bidder walked away with the 'Pol of Gold' displayed in the Jackpot Room. For the coming months' promotion, in September and October, the Club will be putting up a 'Briefcase of Notes'.

I

My immediate priority is to see if we can attract members who have not been frequent users of the Club to be back. New events and activities are

presently in the advanced planning stage. They will be diverse and well organized. They will be targeted to cater to both the young and the nolso-young amongst us. Those in the middle will also be looked after. We

must not forget that they are the future generations of RSYC membership. Do check out our improved event calendar on page 25. As part of security enhancement, the Security Department would like to encourage members to have their members' cards replaced with photographs shown on the cards. You may wish to approach the Membership Department to replace a new card or any worn out cards. For a phased execution of access control measures, all commercial contractors, event or sea sports instructors, and guests not accompanied by members will be requested to provide Identification for verification before entering the Club. We like to encourage members to stay in our Accommodation rooms, especially the few apartment suites, each measuring 56 sqm, with exceptional sea view, balcony, pantry and HD flat screen TV. Members' guests are also permitted to stay. With the coming Formula 1 night racing, and many hotels running high occupancy, our rooms offer excellent value at current rates.

With ongoing improvements to the Club facilities, the children's games room at the accommodation wing will undergo repainting and maintenance work. As part of temporary arrangements, the Club has made available increased seating capacity and placed new sofa sets in the TV room next

to The Wharf to help parents with children and domestic helpers. As RSYC aspires to be the best yacht club in the region and your club of choice, the management continues to ask for your usual feedbacks, the positive ones and those requiring changes to our service standards. I look forward to meeting you at the Club, and wish you to know my door is always open. Yours sincerely. Dr. Matthew Yap General Manager 19 August 2010

CLUB NEWS The 2010 Regatta

Mr McGugan Co-opted Into The RSYC Regatta 2010 was successfully concluded on Sunday 1 August, with the traditional closing dinner and prize-giving ceremony that saw several new champion skippers lifting their trophies high. Congratulations to all of them and their crews. They will soon be able to see their names on the newly-created wooden display board in the Level 1 lobby area. Thanks to Christopher Nunns for his comprehensive report on pages 6 to 9 and to staffer Henny for the pictures including the cover photo.

It was a great idea to put up this display board a few months ago, showing all the winning yachts and their skippers that won the races in the annual

classic RSYC Regattas since the year 2000. This visual display of an important part of our history and traditions, no doubt, will provide plenty of talking topics as current and future sailors visit and recall some of the memorable races of the past years.

Main Committee

We are pleased to report that Mr John McGugan has been co-

opted into the Main Committee at its meeting on 19 August 2010. As most members know,

Mr McGugan is one of our most active members and has served

as a flag officer for most of the

past 15 or more years. He last served as Rear Commodore in the 2007/08 Committee

and was also very active in the Development and

Heritage Sub-Committees in the last few years. New Sub-Committees for 2010/11 The Club's Sub-Committees have been re-structured

and there are now four SCs as follows and headed by:

Development - Mr Tan Kay Toh Finance - Mr Kjetil Gulliksen Audit / Risk Management- Mr Low Teo Ping Lifestyle - Mr David Cronin

Jackpot Players are Rewarded

Mr Ng Ser Miang Bestowed Coveted Medal

There has been quite a buzz in recent weeks in the Jackpot Room. To recognise the support and continued patronage of our members and their guests, we are introducing a reward scheme that takes effect from 1 September 2010. Here's how it works.

We rejoice with long-lime Club member, Mr Ng Ser Miang, one of eight prominent citizens conferred with the prestigious Meritorious Service Medal during this year's National Day. Mr Ng's award was given in recognition of his leading role in bringing the inaugural Youth Olympic

All Jackpot players who are guests of RSYC members and whose claims exceed 200 credits, will have their

credits recorded. At the end of three months, that is, by

30 November 2010, the top five guests with the most claims will win a one year's RSYC term membership. Terms and conditions apply.

Games to Singapore. Mr Ng, age 61, was

a former champion sailor and a past president of the Singapore Sailing Federation. He is currently one of four vice presidents of the International Olympic Committee (IOC)and is widely known as Singapore's'Mr Olympics'.

As for the members, you will stand to win a SSI 00 F&B voucher, plus a complimentary one-night's stay at our Marina Lodge, if your guest is picked as one of the top five winners. So, do tell your friends and office colleagues about this special promotion that starts on Wednesday 1 September and lasts for three months.

Legendary Champion Sailor Visits Again Talking of past sailing exploits, an avid old salt visited the Club last June and managed to catch the launching of the book 'Three Burgees' during the dinner event on 19 June. Former member Kurt Lindblad, who now

resides in the Bahamas, came and presented former Commodore Balakrishnan with the 1961 Rear

Commodore's Cup for permanent display in the Club. At home in the Bahamas, Kurt has an extensive collection

of over 100 silver trophies. 'Half of them were won over races round the clubs in Singapore - Changi, Seletar, Naval Base and Tengah - and the other half at RSYC,' he told Editor K.C.Yuen. Kurt used to sail in his

favourite snipe, the Sinl, in the early 1960s.'The races were in series of four or more races, three to count.

They were very competitive, as all the 75 snipes on the island took part,' he said. REPUBLIC or SINGAPORE YACHT CLU13

Mr Kurt Lindblad and Hon. Secretary Mr

In fact, when he was researching for his book, author Peter Dunlop said in an email:'Kurt was a very successful sailor in the 1960s. Our records show him taking 25 first places, 10 second places and 3 third places in the years 1961 to 1964. He mentioned his winning the Lipton (Challenge Trophy) in 1962 and the Black Swan Trophy in 1961 in his snipe 'Sini'.

Enforcement of Exclusivity and Revenue At RSVC we treasure the patronage of members and at the same time wish to maintain the exclusiveness of our Club for our members. This was introduced with

The management has studied closely the effect of this policy for more than one year now and wish to announce that this 10% discount will be removed. At the same

time, for certain categories of patrons of our restaurants and bars, a 20% surcharge (on top of menu prices) will be introduced with effect from 1 September 2010 for the following categories of diners: * Holders of our 1 -day Visitors card * Persons holding Trial Memberships

Members will note that we will continue to give our members a distinct price advantage whenever they dine or entertain in RSVC. We look forward to your continued support, as always. RSYC MAGAZINQ SCPTCMItER/OCTOlitR 2010

The first day's racing on Sunday 25th July included 3

both socially and competitively. With this in mind the Regatta Organising Committee chose to continue with the 2009 Regatta format of windward - leeward races and one passage race, since this Regatta format appears to be the best compromise when trying to satisfy the expectations of the racing fleet. On Saturday 24th July, skippers and crews were invited to attend a briefing at the Club followed by drinks and snacks on the Foreshore. As usual, skippers were vocal, with lively discussion concerning the possibility of combining IRC 'A' and IRC 'B' into one IRC Division. It was decided to maintain two separate classes. The other racing classes were 'One Design' for the ]-24 yachts, including two entries from RSYC, and PY class. Appreciation was shown for the decision to replace the unpopular sponsors' stickers with sponsors' flags and REPUBLIC OF SINGAPORE YACHT CLUB

windward - leeward races. The wind was somewhat

disappointing, perhaps just 7 knots, but the Race Officer managed to complete all 3 races after some judicious shortening of courses. In IRC 'A', the first 3 races saw a close battle between Windsikher and Men At Work,

with Wala Wala maintaining a consistent 3rd position. In the smaller IRC 'B' fleet, Gordon Maxted managed two 1 st places in Shoon Fung Too, with the other win going to Rainbow Dream. In the J-24 One Design Class, it was clear after 3 races that Angel, skippered by Vladimir Borstnar, would be difficult to beat. Shengli maintained a consistent 2nd place. In PY, results were mixed and probably confusing. The performance handicap system allows for adjustment of handicaps during the Regatta itself. On Day 1, this system benefited Velera Linda which started badly with 5th place in Race 1. However, assisted by the[subsequent handicap

adjustment, Velera Linda went on to gain a 1 st and 2nd place. However,Todak 2 showed consistency and was best positioned at the end of Day 1. The passage race was held on Saturday 31 st July(Racing Day 2). The wind was a little fresher than for Day 1 and the Race Officer had set a course somewhat longer than in 2009 when most skippers felt the passage was too short. In order to achieve a longer course, the start was held in Selat Pauh. Whilst there is sufficient space for a start line, care is required in navigating around the numerous reefs. Unfortunately, Wala Wala went aground shortly after the start and was fortunate to be able to motor off and volunteer a 360 degree turn as a penalty. Thereafter, the passage race went smoothly with most yachts finishing in approximately 3hrs 45 mins, close to the optimum 4 hours racing planned. The results of the passage race were consistent with performance during Day 1, with Windsikher leading IRC 'A', ahead of Men At Work, Shoon Fung Too winning IRC 'B' and Angel winning j-24 One Design. and prize-giving. RSYC was happy with the presence of the new President of Singapore Sailing Dr Ben Tan who took the opportunity to explain in some detail his plans for the future of sailing in Singapore. Of particular interest to the keelboat fleet attending the dinner were Dr Tan's plans to encourage the transition from youth dinghy sailing to club keelboat sailing - hopefully addressing the long-established 'disconnect' between these communities.

would clear and the wind would die before the first

race. In fact, the wind maintained a consistent 20 knots

and the racing area was exposed to the south-west, allowing some steep seas to build up during the morning. While yachts reached across the course reviewing their choice of sails, problems were becoming evident in race organisation. First one support boat, and then another, was overwhelmed by waves whilst standingby to lay the course marks. One of the boat drivers was injured and was taken back to shore with the assistance of MPA. Lacking sufficient support craft, and with concern about MPA's response If racing had somehow been continued, the Race Officer had no option but to cancel racing for the day. This was a great disappointment to the racing fleet which would have enjoyed a rare opportunity to race in 20 knot winds during the south-west monsoon. However, the overall feedback from sailors was sympathetic to the organisers in circumstances which nobody could have foreseen. Some of the Raffles Marina-based yachts took the opportunity to 'return to base' immediately, so as not to waste the afternoon, but all crews returned to RSYC

in the evening to enjoy the excellent closing dinner REPUBLIC OF SINCAPORE YACHT CLUB

At the Prize-giving, Windsikher, skippered by Sarab Jeet Singh, triumphed in IRC 'A', just ahead of Men At Work. Shoon Fung Too took the honours in IRC 'B' and, predictably. Angel won the J-24 One Design class by a comfortable margin. Last but not least, Leslie Fung's Todak 2 won PY Class just ahead of Arbudhen. Thanks to the enormous generosity of regatta sponsors Corum, Sony, Standard Chartered, Aon and Simpson Marine, prizes were generous and the sailors were clearly grateful for the hospitality shown by RSYC.

Contest 31 July to 9 August 2010

For some diversion, there was an exciting evening of another kind last week, when some 30-plus members gathered in the jackpot Room to witness the results of the 'Pot of Gold' guess the pot's contents contest. The winning bid came from a lady member who submitted the figure 1,112 coins and walked away as the sole winner. She requested to remain anonymous. A new contest has just begun, beginning in September. Called a 'Briefcase of Notes' members are asked to guess the contents of the briefcase displayed in the Jackpot Room. Do drop in one of these days and see the contest rules. You could be the next lucky one!

Although we are a yacht club, we do look after the little ones who

come to the Club with their parents from time to time. During the period from 31 July 2010 to our

recent National Day on 9 Augus we held a children s colouring contest for a our budding artists age 4 to 12.

We congratulate the following winners: Ezra Yixuan, Darshini

Devi, Colin Hong, Melanie Chong, Farah Ashirin and Ignatius Pang. Well done, everyone! Keep a look out for the next children's contest. Please call Events at 6768 9382

to claim your prizes.

k

Federation holds Dinner @ RSYC 19 August 2010 The International Sailing Federation (ISAF) recently held a sumptuous dinner at The Bridge for 17 members of the International race management team who are here officiating at the Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games. The dinner event was hosted by Mr. Goran Petersson, ISAF President and IOC member together with ISAF's Vice Presidents, Mr. Low Teo Ping from Singapore and Ms Nazli Imre from Turkey. Commodore Tan Kay Toh with ISAF President Goran Petersson and Vice Commot

Low Teo Ping.

Commodore Tan Kay Toh welcomed the ISAFjJ'

members to the RSYC and presented each of thejj; visitors with a copy of "Three Burgees: A History of The Republic of Singapore Yacht Club." The menu was specially prepared by Chef Martin

and received waves of appreciation for fusing both eastern and western ingredients in the six courses. He was later introduced to the diners who applauded his efforts.

Harbour Queen makes RSYC her marina of choice

f"

If everything goes according to plan, from this month a ship with an interesting history will be berthed at our marina. Built in 1987, the Harbour Queen used to be the vessel of choice for visiting dignitaries taking a cruise of Singapore harbour during the past two decades. Among those who have sailed in the "flagship" of the Port of Singapore Authority were royalty like Queen Elizabeth II, prime ministers and other high ranking government officials, including our very own Cabinet ministers. Its then owner, of course, was the PSA.

Now owned by a member of RSYC who requested anonymity, the Harbour Queen is available for limited charter, through the RSYC for club events, only a few times a year. The 118-foot vessel is luxuriously furnished and can accommodate up to 120 passengers. At other times, bookings may be made through their agents, Happy Cruises.

The ABC Waters @ Pandan Reservoir was officially opened on 25 July 2010 by Mr S. Iswaran, Senior Minister of State, Ministry of Trade and Industry, and Ministry of Education. As part of the event, sailors from Jurongville Secondary School, Pioneer Secondary School and Westgrove Primary School (all of whom have trained in RSYC), gave a sailing demonstration to VIPs and members of the public. RSYC would like to thank these young sailors and their teachers for showing how easy it is for anyone to learn sailing. The Pandan Reservoir will be a valuable added resource

to the Club's efforts to promote sailing. The area is ideal for learning sailing as there is no excessive strong wind, no current, no big waves and no hazards common near Singapore's seashore (e.g catfish and jellyfish). Most importantly, there are no commercial vessels moving about in the area.

22

REPUBLIC OF SINGAPORE YACHT CLUB

Needless to say, RSYC would make full use of these advantages. Some of our beginner courses would be moved to the reservoir, leaving the more advanced sailors to train on the sea outside the clubhouse.

We will also take advantage of the reservoir to conduct more "mini-regattas". With a generally circular shape of about 1 km diameter, the Pandan Reservoir is great for dinghy racing. The main 'Amenities Centre' is built with a 'viewing deck' on the upper level. This is good for spectators who would have an unobstructed view of the race area. There is also ample parking space(60 car-park lots, 2 bus-park lots, motorcycle & bicycle lots).

For more information on sailing courses, whether on Pandan Reservoir or on the seas outside the clubhouse,

please contact Mr Jasni, our Sea Sports Officer at seasports@rsyc.org.sg.

Upcoming Seasports Activities FATHER-SON SAILING COURSE

Watch for the RSYC 'Father-Son Sailing Course' planned for early November 2010. What better way for a father

and son to bond than to learn a new skill together? Laugh together at each other's mistakes and hi-five together to celebrate the successes. Your son can learn on an Optimist boat, while Dad can take a Topper. At the end of the two-day course, walk away with the knowledge that you have learnt how to sail. And that you did it together with your buddy. Contact Mr Jasni at seasports@rsyc.org.sg.

ENJOY SOUTHERN ISLANDS CRUISE

The Club is in the late stages of planning for a 'Enjoy the Southern Islands Cruise' to showcase the area near

RSYC to our new and aspiring boaters. Some of the interesting destinations to explore are the picnic grounds in Pulau Hantu, Tua-Pek-Kong temple on Kusu Island, the beautiful Eagle's Bay, the deep-water diving area off Pulau Jung, the romantic Sister's Islands, or the historical St John's Island. It you have completed our PPCDL and are wondering where to go or what to do, contact contact Mr Jasni at seasports@rsyc.org.sg

SAFETY

1. For safety reasons members are reminded not to berth their boats at the fuel dock except for fuel or emergency cases.

2. The boat washing bay is not for washing of automobiles. Marine department seek members'co

operation to refrain from washing their automobiles at the area.

3. All members and guests are reminded not to cast or deploy fishing lines and traps within the marina. They should fish at the designated main wave attenuator starting from the B berth up to the J berth. For safety reasons, members are also advised not to fish under the main ramps leading to the pontoon.

MARINE HOUSEKEEPING

Marine department is seeking co-operation and understanding from all boating members whose boats are at the dry berth to keep the area tidy. Please do not leave any of your equipment outside the lockers,

Storing of cans or containers on top or around the steel lockers is dangerous and is a fjre hazard. Such practice should be avoided at all times. The Marine department will embark on a clearing up of the dry berth area on 15 September 2010. Members are kindly requested to remove al l gears and equipment that are outside their lockers.
