New attractions

for kids at the

Club As part of the ongoing improvements at RSYC, the Club has refurbished the Children's Room at The Wharf Restaurant and will see the construction of the

new playground, to be completed by early June. The youngsters can now look forward to a fun time while parents dine and relax at the Club. CHILDREN'S ROOM

The Children's Room, now relocated near The Wharf

Restaurant, has undergone some "transformation" over several weeks in March and April. The new Children's Room

now features a lively wall mural, painted by volunteering member Shane Chia and friend Dylan Liang, along with new and interactive toys to keep the children entertained.

CHILDREN'S PLAYGROUND

To provide endless hours of fun for the young ones, the new 60m2 playground will feature rubberized flooring, a "donkey ride", a

climbing net that trails across to a main playhouse fitted with a "fireman's pole" and a slide. Look out for it in June.

A cozy backdrop for youngsters at play Airbrush-wielding 34-year-old member Shane Chia, who joined the Club in March 2014, recently volunteered to paint a playful mural together with his friend Dylan Liang, in the newly-refurbished Children's Room. Shane, a boating enthusiast, is expecting the arrival of his 16-meter boat from Phuket in May and intends to embrace the

maritime lifestyle and live onboard with his family. The nautical-inspired mural depicting popular animated characters will provide a colorful and cozy backdrop for youngsters' play sessions at the Children's Room.

Thank you Shane and Dylan for volunteering your time, expertise and creativity.

leaks. Never discharge bilge water that appears oily or has a sheen Into the water.

PREVENT FUEL OR CHEMICAL SPILLS

One Step At A Time Every boater loves being on the water and a clean marine environment Is a crucial aspect of enjoying the boating experience. With over 238 boats registered at RSYC today, the cumulative actions of boaters and crews can have a

significant Impact on the well being of the marine eco system. You can help to keep our Club and waterways clean and green by following these simple tips: CLEAN SAFELY & GENTLY

Look for environment-friendly and non-toxic cleaning products for boats that can help protect the environment and are safer for you and your family. While cleaning your boat, use biodegradable cleaning agents and avoid from getting them into the water.

Many companies today are producing marine cleaning products that are committed to maintaining cleaner waters; and have developed non-toxic and biodegradable boat soaps, which have minimal negative Impact on the aquatic environment.

IF IT'S RECYCLABLE, RECYCLE IT

Upkeep of boats generally produces a variety of recyclable wastes such as solvent from paints, antifreeze, oil, gasoline, batteries, mercury from bilge pump switches, and expired flares. Other recyclable wastes such as foam containers, plastic bags, bottles, cans, nets and monofllament fishing lines can harm or kill marine life and birds by trapping or suffocating them. Apart from harming the environment and its natural Inhabitants, these waste can also do damage to your boat or fishing equipment. If they are Improperly disposed.

Dispose these wastes at a waste collection facility where these can be recycled or disposed of safely. Check with the Marine Dept on available services or locations where you can dispose these wastes. STASH YOUR TRASH

Never throw cigarette butts, fishing line, or any other garbage into the sea. Keep your trash onboard in a sturdy container and dispose them when you're back on land. Use the recycling stations available at the Club to recycle plastic, glass, metal and paper. MAINTAIN A CLEAN BILGE

Unmaintalned bilges pose a potential threat to the environment since they are prone to collect engine oil, fuel, antifreeze, and transmission fluid. While a bilge pump can be used to pump these fluids overboard, another alternative Is by using absorbent bilge pads or pillows to absorb oily wastes, but not water. These pads and pillows can then be disposed of properly when It's saturated. To minimize oils In the bilge, keep the engine well tuned with no leaking seals, gaskets, or hoses. When changing oil filters, slip a plastic bag over the filter before removal to catch drips and secure fuel hoses to prevent chafing and

REPUBLIC OF SINGAPORE YACHT CLUB

Install a device to prevent overboard discharges from your tank, which

will give a warning and prevent spills when your tank is reaching its fuel capacity. Fill your tank cautiously and slowly; leaving 10% empty to prevent It from overflowing and allowing the fuel to naturally expand as It warms. Fuel naturally expands as the temperature rises and leaving a bit of space at the top of your fuel tank will help to prevent fuel from overflowing when it's warmer outside. Small drips and spills of gasoline, diesel, and other petroleum products add up and can be detrimental to the marine environment. If a spill occurs, please notify the Marina Dept immediately. MAINTAIN PROPER EQUIPMENT

Make sure your boat's engine and propeller blades are In good condition to avoid wasting fuel and minimizing the chances of any oil, gasoline or other hazardous materials entering the water. CHART YOUR COURSE

Study your navigation charts and waterways to prevent boat propellers from damaging sensitive sea floor habitats or Injuring marine life. Avoid consuming excess fuel supply and plan your trip In advance to avoid confusion and misdirection. Also, be careful when you drop your anchor, a powerful windlass can do a lot of damage to a coral reef. AND FINALLY...

Please be mindful of the surroundings at the Club for the benefit and enjoyment of other members and boaters. Be It on the water or on land, let's all take the responsibility to keep the waterways and boat-washing areas at the Club clean and rubbish-free.

If you have any suggestions or recommendations that will help us save and preserve the environment, please do not hesitate to drop us a note at lnfo@rsyc.org.sg Happy boating!
