Burgee of the Royal Singapore Yacht Club

Burgee of the Republic of Singapore Yacht Club

FROM ROYAL TO REPUBLIC

On independence, Yusof bin Ishak

became the first President of the

Republic of Singapore and on 15 May 1967, after the Club, at the request of the government, had relinquished the title Royal Singapore Yacht Club in favour of Republic of Singapore Yacht Club, President Yusof kindly consented to become its patron thus continuing the Club's tradition of having the head of state as its patron.

The other class ofsocieties represented were Singapore "branches" of international bodies such as the Royal and Ancient Order of Buffaloes, and the Royal Alexandra Chest Clinic... and the Registrar said the prime minister would have no difficulty over them retaining "Royal". It should be noted there are not many "Royal" yacht clubs that had or have the Queen herself

the Registrar on 24 June 1967. President Yusof bin Ishak died in office on 23 November 1970. There is evidence in the Club's archives that President

Benjamin Sheares may have been patron correspondence dated 1973-1982 regarding presidential patronage of the RSYC includes a copy of a letter from Jack Snowden to President Sheares dated 10 December 1973.

as Patron.

The Club was registered with the Registrar of Societies on 20 October 1961. Mike Pollett,

the honorary secretary of the day recalled;

In June 1966 I, as Hon Sec of the Royal Singapore Yacht Club, was summoned, together with, as It turned out, officers of about 10 other Singapore-registered societies with the word "Royal" in their name, to the Registrar of Societies. He explained that the prime minister wished those who could, to drop "Royal" from their title. It became apparent early on that many like ourselves and the Royal Singapore Flying Club, etc would have no trouble in doing so (I stated that there still existed Royal Yacht clubs in several Republics, namely India, South Africa, and the Republic of Ireland, which was noted).

It is clear, however, that in the difficult

The special general meeting held on 6 January 1967 approved the change of name to Republic of Singapore Yacht Club, which was deemed to take effect from 1 January 1967 on which date HM The Queen was

deemed to have ceased to be patron.

The Registrar approved the draft change of rules on 29 December 1966 and the change of name and rules on 19 January 1967 following ratification at the SGM. It took a while to hold and judge a competition for a change of emblems. Sheila Snowden submitted the winning design in which the then similarly shaped outline of the island replaced the lozenge of the Straits Settlements and the Merlion replaced the crown. The new emblems were approved by

years which followed, the Club lacked the confidence to seek the patronage of succeeding presidents until April 1984, when Francis Lee suggested, in a planning sub committee meeting, that the president might agree to become the Club's patron. This was ultimately achieved when President Ong Teng Cheong accepted the Club's invitation to become patron on 16 June 1997. He later graced the official opening of the new Club on 17 June 2000. He was succeeded as

patron by President S R Nathan on 23 April 2003. The Club is immensely proud of this unique, distinction of having the president as its patron. Excerpt from Three Burgees, History of The Republic of Singapore Yacht Club, written by Peter Dunlop.

PROFILE

AN INTREPID & INQUISITIVE EXPLORER A familiar face to members at the Club, particularly so for the boating community here at RSYC, Franols Yeo, 37, began his kinship with the open waters at a tender age of 8, when he tagged along with his father on fishing trips from the Jaian Buroh clubhouse.

Reminiscing the early days, Francis recalls the rushing of water as the watergates near the clubhouse were opened to let out the excess water; and the many occasions when he and his mates casted nets

to catch prawns and small fishes. Francis also vividly remembers the swimming pool at the old clubhouse, especially the scratches one would get treading on the "not-so-smooth" concrete surfaces around the pool. Gone are the carefree days of childhood. A certified diver to diving instructor trainer and a dedicated

businessman, Francis, who has been a corporate member since 1999, also shared that he used to have a shop dealing in scuba diving equipment here at the Club. Building on his passion for the

seas and the sport of diving, he has since diversified his business, and these days, Francis is kept busy running multiple businesses in Singapore and abroad - ranging from boat charters on government research projects for NParks, NUB & NTU in restricted waters of

Singapore, a scuba diving school, diving equipment supplies and even a pub along Jalan Klapa. More recently, he is awaiting to receive his new 20-metre boat, that's currently being built in Batam.

As a long-time member, Francis, whose father and several family members are also members of RSYC,shares that he wishes to

see the Giub prosper and develop into a more vibrant place for all members.

SEA SPORTS

RSYC SAILING PROGRAMME INTRODUCTION

The RSYC Sailing Programme is targeted at educating participants from the age of 13 onwards to teach the basic knowledge of the environment, the sea, the weather, and various aspects of the sport of sailing through a three-day interactive programme and hands-on activities.

The Sailing Programme - also open to all secondary school students - aims to introduce basic sailing and boat handling skills, geography, science, water safety and life skills in a fun, non-competitive way. PROGRAMME INFORMATION

This introduction to sailing is a three (3) days programme, which can also be conducted in six (6) half-day sessions, and serves as a teaser

to grow the interest of sailing at the Club. CONTENT & METHOD

• Sailing is a powerful outdoor education tool, which can develop character life skills, as well as develop knowledge and concern about the natural environment.

• In this Basic Sailing Programme, participants are exposed to environment - the sea, waves, coasts, wind and weather through hands-on activities.

• They will be introduced to different types of sailboats; along with the physics and mechanics behind how sailboats work. • Participants will experience sailing in a 2-person sailboat - the Laser Pico!

RSYC hopes to achieve a broad base of students taking up the programme; focusing on combining considerations in two distinct

aspects - Education and Sports. As the Club is revamping its sailing courses, the Club will constantly try to evolve this programme in a way which develops an activity that mutually benefits the Club, its members, the sailing community and the participants. EDUCATION

The programme aims to promote the sport of sailing through the development of knowledge and concerns of the natural environment. These include understanding water safety, the environment, the weather, the tides and decision-making and so forth. It also develops important life skills such as leadership and teamwork in a hands-on environment. The Club believes that the qualities achieved through sailing will then help young people face the challenges of life. Through learning about the techniques of sailing, they will also be educated on the importance of safety. At the end of the three-day course, participants will: • Experience steering and controlling a boat as well as trimming sails to catch the wind.

• Have a better understanding of the environment in which they live, the delicate nature of our planet and how we must treat it with respect for our future. • Have a better understanding of how the weather works, why the sun will shine or wind will blow, when to carry an umbrella and put on sunscreen.

• Gain water wisdom and be able to tell their parents why the tide is low or high, when it is safe to swim and when the current is dangerous. • Have a better understanding of how the tides relate to the earth, moon, sun and the planets. • Learn how to care for themselves and their equipment. • Have acquired the principles of seamanship - to have respect for nature, as nature cannot be controlled. We can adapt and trim our sails and face any challenge that life presents. • Learn the importance of working in a team for success, taking charge and providing leadership of a group to collectively achieve

Water safety is of utmost importance. Personal floatation devices (i.e. life jackets), helmet and covered footwear are compulsory for all sailing and other water-based activities. A power boat will also be on the water to cover safety for all water-based activities at all times.
