Made In Heaven Dutch Jazz And French Wine Evening Wow, what a night! One hundred and twenty five members turned up to appreciate three
good things in life; Jazz, Fine Wine and Gourmet Cuisine. For one night only, The
Tanglin Club had the pleasure of introducing Dutch recording jazz artist Mr Harry Happel and double bass player Christy Smith at the Churchill Room in front of a full-capacity crowd.
Mr Happel, the founder of Dutch jazz trio "Intrioduction" is among the most recognised jazz pianists in Europe today, publishing more than 15 albums, as well as playing in many prestigious jazz clubs around the world. During the evening, members got a taste of
what real jazz sounds like, when performed by a pro. It was simply fantastic, smooth tunes of classic and modern jazz, filling the room. Mr Happel simply made it all look too easy. The evening wasn't all about jazz though, it was a carefully planned event with wine and
food complementing each other throughout the night. With the expertise of French born Thomas Percillier - the Asian Pacific Export
Director for the CVBG group. It was about individual winemaking, its characteristics and the appreciation of finding Chateaux wines within a reasonable price range. Mr Percillier brought some outstanding wines including the excellent Chateau Le Boscq 1999, La Grande Cuvee Blanc 2000 and the Grand Cru Classe nominated Chateau
Belgrave 1999. The wines, six in all, accompanied by a sixcourse Menu Degustation made this event, not only educational and festive, but most importantly an evening of match making-Made in Heaven" which promises Mr Happel's return to our Club sometime later this year.

OttlOf Amelia Herran, born in Spain and a language teacher by profession, developed a passion for African handicrafts while working and traveling in Africa. She specialises in the art of adorning the body and has, during her countless visits to local street markets,
collected an amazing variety of silverware, ancient beads and other precious and semi
precious stones used by Africans to make themselves beautiful.
The history of African beads is a history of the different and contrasting lifestyles that has developed in Africa, depending on the various locations of the societies, be it the desert,

The Bayon temple takes an easy second place after Angkor Wat as the most popular of Angkor's many monuments. It's a place of stooped corridors, precipitous flights of stairs and most of all, a collection of gothic towers decorated with over 200 coldly smiling, gargantuan faces of Avolokiteshvara. As you walk around, these faces play hide and seek with you, suddenly appearing before you, full face or in profile, almost level with your eyes or peering down from on high.

Day 1 After a two hour flight on Silk Air, we arrived at our destination of Siem Reap. To maximize time, we were whisked straight from the airport to the Artisans d'Angkor where young artisans continue to develop their skills and express their talents in sculptures and statues. Day 1 was devoted to the culture and creativity of the Cambodians. The Khmer Rouge's assault on artists and intellectuals was a terrible blow to Cambodian culture. The tournament brought out the very best in the Tanglin Club players who all rose in stature, not least as they saw most of the ball. Alan Leddra and Lood van Rooyen were a star pair losing only very narrowly in the semi-finals but coming back to win the 3rd position.

For the diehards, a 6.30 am tee-off at Royal Huahin, the oldest golf course in Thailand which was opened in 1924. Its rolling fairways and postage stamp greens, made this a really challenging course. Well done to Siegfried Beil for walking the full 18 holes.

This seems to be the most fair method as we have players witii extensive travelling schedules, but still able to complete six games! Same philosophy actually relates to the game of Balut itself - the more you throw, the better the chance of a good throw - It is all about odds (and luck)! Ashoke did a double whammy by also scoring a column of 148 in the second last game of the season, just edging out Sapinah Hughes, David Hughes and Andrew Trevatt, all with a score of 147 and thus saviouring the excitement of a 'Cold Flop' for this trophy!
