Talk On Eurasian Culture & Cuisine
Thursday 17 June Learn and experience the unique culture and cuisine of Eurasians in this
fascinating and informative talk by Edwin Perelra. Although he is better known to our readers as a floral specialist, he is also an accomplished cook and authority on Eurasian cuisine. Edwin started cooking in his school days, helping his mother in the kitchen
and learning the fine art of Eurasian cooking. A traditional meal, he says, would comprise 'curry feng' - a curry of mixed innards and pork belly, galina kristang - a chicken marinated In a sauce with green peas and onions, a pot of roast ham with spices and cloves, an Eurasian style 'chap chye' and so on.
So don't miss this rare opportunity to hear and learn from Edwin! Date

Investing in Contemporary Philippine Art 15 April 2004
investing in the paintings of young, promising Filipino artists in their thirties, such as Mark Justinlani, Marcel Antonio, Ronald Ventura
and Romeo Forbes. His personal collection favorites
were
Bencab
and
Anita
Magsaysay-Ho. He thoughtfully brought along a selection of his original paintings for us to see and these were displayed around the room. I particularly liked "The Musicians" - a modern abstract painting by Arturo Luz.
Mr Hizon concluded his talk by giving general tips on acquiring Filipino Art Including the following: 1 Educate yourself on the artists and their works via books and talking to gallery experts and collectors of Filipino art. 2 Be sure the piece is of Importance (In particular to yourself). Consider the size of the painting and the space in your home.
3 Protect yourself by buying recognized masters and recognized contemporary artists.
4 Be sure the piece is of the utmost quality. 5 Despite 20% mark up being added to purchases at Sotheby's and other auction houses, you can still find good bargains, so it is worth attending their functions.
If you haven't had time to attend one of these events lately I highly recommend that you do make the effort to try to fit one (or more) into your schedule. I had forgotten how enjoyable and informative these special occasions can bel (I will confess that I was also, somewhat, swayed into a receptive mood by the tempting buffet, pleasant table companions and original artwork on display.) A humorous and light-hearted talk by BBC journalist, Rico Hizon, was the focus of the 15 April Tea. The subject was "Investing in Philippine Contemporary Art". An avid collector of over ten years, Mr Hizon happily
shared his enthusiasm and knowledge. He started off with a short history reminding us that dating back to 500 years ago, Filipino art was strongly influenced by the European Masters as well as their own historical

During question time, when asked about prices, Mr Hizon said It very much depended upon the size of the piece and the particular artist. He warned that even very promising artists did not always later become famous. Sotheby's and Christie's have experts to help you assess prices.

members took advantage of the special

Moss Wood Wine Dinner Wednesday 20 May 2004 Another sell-out affair was the Wine Dinner featuring the fine wines from the Moss Wood and Ribbondale

early. Also, thanks to our F&B staff for an excellent evening.

golf Annual Match vs Changi Beach Club We enjoyed our annual match against the Changi Beach Club on a sunny Wednesday afternoon in late April.
Our opponents 'hosted' the event this year and selected Sembawang Country Club as the venue, and aggregate stabieford points as the basis of the scoring for the match. We fielded a team of 16 players and our opponents selected a team of 16 out of a total of 26 players, the remaining of whom played a social game with their scores not counting in the aggregate for the match.
The game was played in good spirit and the company was very sociable and sporting, with Changi Beach Club winning the mate'
by an aggregate total of 576 points compared to Tangiin ClutW^ 516 points. In the individual competition the results were as follows: Changi Beach Club 1ÂŽ'

Correction Due to a computer glitch which omitted fractions, we have to correct a golf report in last month's magazine.
In the story on the golf match between the British Club and The Tangiin Ciub on 26 March the sentences should read: "... it was agreed that teams of two would play for one point and those playing singles would play for a point, giving a total of 7}i points available in the match. Despite being 'outnumbered', we fought tenaciously and won
a very close contest by 4 points to 3}i points and so retained the trophy for another year."

Singapore Swimming Club The Tangiin Club were once again invited to the annual Singapore Swimming Club (SSC) Invitational Tournament. There were eight teams involved and the tournament was played on a knockout format. As luck would have it, we were drawn to play the hosts SSC in the
first round. Despite winning the Men's Doubles, we were knocked out after losing the Ladies and the Mixed Doubles matches. Better luck next time!

Morning Ladies Tennis Friendly Match The Tangiin Club vs SICC

Despite a season plagued with injuries, The Tangiin Club ladies 'B' team ended up in the middle of the league at the end of the
Spring season. Those fit enough and able to play at least the statutory two matches were: All Evers-Swindell, Suzanne Hartnoll,
Pippa Lawton, Esther Ling, Scilla Neal, Nan Sandford, Lilly Scrimgeour, Akiko Shaw, Marion White and Sandra Wong.
'TwSny of the games were fiercely contested but as always there was a great camaraderie
amongst aii the players and this is what makes WITS so enjoyable.
The Morning Ladies Tennis Section hosted a friendly match against SICC on Friday 23 April. Despite the early start, there was a very encouraging and enthusiastic turn-out on our side. So much so, that some of our
1 would like to thank all the ladies who
played, as well as the Club for its support in this venture. The new season does not
start till September but we will definitely need more players if we are to enter a 'B' team then. Even if you can only play a couple of games between September and November on Tuesday mornings, please consider joining our ranks. regular players who also happen to be members of SICC actually played against us! This made for some very interesting and closely-fought matches, but in the end SICC actually came out as the winners by a narrow majority. As always, there was a lot of friendly chatter between matches and at the end of the
morning, when we ail enjoyed the
refreshments provided by the Club. Once again, thanks to Lillian Lum for organising the event and to the staff in the Sports & Recreation Department for all their support. If there are any more lady members who would like to play with us on Monday, Tuesday or Friday mornings, please come and join us. You will be made most welcome.

Suan, as well as encouragement from each other, everyone was soon having fun and found the whole event rather enjoyable
regardless of the outcome of the matches. A secret method (which proved very effective!) to calm anxious nerves was even provided by Suan! The team was eventually placed in fifth position out of ten teams - a respectable placing, considering that we went into it without any training whilst many of the teams had substantial and serious coaching. After this first enjoyable experience, let's hope our 'seasoned' team members and others will be eager to join the next competition in

Contributing factors were thought to be the Friday night fever in Surabaya and no doubt the very high standard of squash. Ross and David were beaten in the quarter finals by
two young Indonesians with national singles rankings of #3 and #4(The indonesian #1 won the bronze medal at the last SEA

Eight pairs from The Tanglin Club plus supporter Steve Wright traveled to Surabaya for the very first indonesian International Jumbo Doubles Squash Tournament at the Atlas Sports Club.
For the TC boys, this proved a very
interesting experience as the Atlas Sports Club is essentialiy a fitness centre, not just a squash compiex. To get to the courts, you had to walk through a huge aerobics area, usualiy filled with lots of lovely gyrating iadies, which proved to be a great distraction for some. You then pass through a iong
corridor with a great number of weight stack machines. Their new squash courts were not the usual all white design but the more

The Atlas Sports Club did an excellent job in organizing a very enjoyable event, not the least of which was the superb accommodation at the JW Marriott. They also had a few interesting ideas for the postfinals lunch - a makeshift stage and sound
system was set up beside the squash courts and a troupe of dancers from the sports club came on to entertain us all. How do
we follow that? Do not worry, several TC players were seen taking particular interest
in the performance and no doubt will come up with some imaginative suggestions.
