GENERAL COMMITTEE President Or Alex K H Ooi

Ourfinancials were on the way back to health

when it was badly hit by the SARS months. The General Committee(GO)has considered many measures to bring us back on track but projections show that, realistically, we can only hope to keep the year-end cumulative deficit to an acceptable level, albeit one likely to be higher than pre-SARS estimates, if we are not to compromise on our identity and stature.

An immediate one is to gear up activity. It is heartening to note the return in patronage and I hope this continues. I am certain this is due principally to the quality of food and style of service our staff are accustomed to providing. You can rest assured that we are mindful of tending to the welfare of our staff even as we keep abreast of economic demands.

We are pressing on to ensure management efficiency and Integrity. Only when we have optimized this can we look at easier options to balance the operating account.

We are fortunate in still having a healthy capital account as our membership remains sought-after. Plans on cost-effectively and meaningfully using part of this for maintenance efficiencies and improving our stature is well underway. We are at the final judging process of the Master Plan design competition. The GO will then fine-tune the winning design and make recommendations at an SGM. The concept of returning the Club to its members is gradually and surely taking root. As we get further away from the acrimonious years, the GO aims to continue engendering cordiality. We are also thankful for the many and diverse expertise that have come forth to serve in sub-committees and be involved in the decision-making process, thereby ensuring best possible outcomes and minimizing discontent.

Membership Manager Mary Shotam Purchasing Manager Candice Tan

Sports & Recreation Manager Danny Loh

This Input by members into a management that is responsive can only help the latter to give of its best to members. Whilst "not micromanaging" is an oft thrashed cliche, GO and sub-committees certainly must macro-manage. This dictum has stood us in good stead over decades and, indeed, is our very strength.

From the General Manager Dear members,

How time flies! Here we are in the month of August and you must all be saying where has time gone? Well, we have been busy here with renovations and changes, all for the benefit of you, our valued members. Accommodation - All the rooms being refurbished are nearly completed and should be available later this month for booking and occupation. There will be a choice of pool view or garden view suites, each capable of being used as a family room. 1. Many members are using the Sports Complex car park as an area to park whilst they go to Orchard Road and maybe beyond. So far we have written to nearly 20 members on this matter. Please do not jeopardise the loss of your car park label through this inconsiderate action. 2. There are families who are bringing their children into The Tavern for a meal whilst purporting their age to be 14. My staff can only ask their ages. Please be honest with them. To save any embarrassment, make sure that all persons have identity on them for reference. 3. We are beginning to resemble the stock exchange floor with the amount of mobile phones that are sounding in the Club. The rule is very clear. Please do not abuse it.

The Lobby/Tea Lounge - The works are on schedule and when the wrapping is undone, we should see a marked improvement in our entrance area and Tea Lounge.

4. The saunas around the swimming areas are not to be used as drying rooms. Please refrain from leaving personal property in that area. Thank you all. Finally, we have always appreciated your support of the Club facilities as you make it all worthwhile for the staff. However

We are offering a change of buffet and a weekend barbecue facility on The Terrace for your enjoyment. Churchill Room - This Room is open daily for lunch and dinner and will be host to Ballroom Dancing, a fun Quiz Night on Saturday 30 August, Champagne Brunch and the Parsi Food Promotion on 22 to 26 August. (Please see details on page 12.) My good staff are eagerly awaiting your booking and subsequent arrival. Beer and Wines - All beer prices have been reduced throughout the Club for a two-month period. Please support this gesture. Certain wines and champagnes have also been reduced In price to ensure that club dining meets your expectations. Once again your support of all facilities is most welcome.

If you fall into that category and have concerns that we can remedy, I would be only too delighted to assist you in any way.

Our budget targets are becoming more distant by the day and we are trying every feasible option open to us to get back on track. All ideas are welcome as you well know. Please pop in for a coffee and chat if you so wish. All we ask is your support every month. Please allow us to pamper you in your Club. Have a happy month!

une offered a rare treat for the Tanglin ladies who lunch with an Indonesian Cultural Extravaganza. The Tanglin Club Chefs came up trumps with a delicious selection of Indonesian culinary goodies including Peria Sumbat (stuffed bitter gourd), Soto Bandung and an

unusual dessert drink called Bir Pletok made from palm sugar and ginger.

The Churchill Room was packed with batik-clad beauties who added visual flavour to the proceedings. Sponsored by the Indonesian Embassy a group of Indonesian performers were flown in specially to present three wedding ceremonies. The first was that of the Minangkabau, a matriarchal Muslim society from West Sumatra renowned for their exquisite gold decorated textiles. This was followed by a Baiinese bride and groom clad in gold leaf cloth. The grand finale featured a fascinating bridal procession from the Betawi community of Jakarta. This demonstrated the cultural diversity that makes up this unique group, which includes Peranakan, Portuguese, Baiinese and Chinese elements among others. The procession featured traditional music including the rebana (a tambourine drum) and an official verbal request for the door to be opened for the groom. A display of martial arts (silat) was followed by the narojet dance and the unveiling of the bride so the groom could confirm he was marrying the right girl.

sports AQUA AEROBICS Looking forward to the long hot "summer" months in

Singapore? Well the Aqua Aerobic participants certainly are!

I

After all the rain we have had these past few months the

pool temperature has dropped to refreshing levels. Aqua Aerobics is a fantastic way to cool off during the summer and provides you with a great workout. The class promotes aerobic fitness, strength and flexibility using water resistant

exercises to the beat of music. Swimming proficiency is not required, but even those that are will enjoy the ability to

isolate different muscle groups and work them at a variety of intensities. Some of the most recent information shows that a one hour class of water aerobics burns from 400 to

I\ \

750 calories. This is higher than for land based activities plus you are not impacting negatively on your joints. The pressure of the water helps to keep the blood circulating out of the legs and moving backward through the water which assists in preventing varicose veins. Saturday Afternoon With Janet... Are the weekdays too hectic for you? Are both parents working and can't afford the time during the weekdays to send their children for swimming lessons? Do you prefer the weekends to participate in water activities? Well then... we have the answer for you. Every Saturday afternoon our very own aunty Janet is at poolside conducting swimming lessons for all ages and levels. Aunty Janet is often seen coaching adults, as she is constantly being sought after to coach individual lessons with members during the weekdays.

SQUASH

The Resolution Trophy

Balut Friendly Game

The Resolution Trophy for "Zero & Positive " handicappers was contested between 16 June to 5 July 2003. Although there were only 7 entries, the matches were very enthusiastically contested.

The Squash section played Baiut and won even after the Balut section called for a recount. It was a very relaxed and friendly evening in June when 24 Squash and Baiut section players took part in their third annual inter section friendly game, graciously hosted by the Baiut section complete with prizes for winning players.

The Finals was between Chu Tee Seng and Korlynne Wong. Tee Seng won and retained the Trophy he won last year. It is hoped that more members will participate in future, especiaiiy those who have recently taken up the game.

The squash convenor was later than usual so Graeme Bull stood in for him and had a full measure of beginners luck with the highest total score all night until being just beaten by the Balut convenor Kris Bonnichsen on his last throw for the night. Peck Tee had a very big score early in the night which no one was able to beat and she won the highest single column for Squash and the bottle of wine for me. I don't think anyone can remember seeing so many balut's being thrown during the evening, at our table everyone threw a balut in one game and the beginners were really in luck. Ross MacKenzie who coordinated the Squash section team took responsibility for the squash win when taken to task by our Balut hosts for bringing a professional team to the friendly. After all the excitement and hospitality he eventually remembered to thank the Baiut section for being gracious

hosts and for turning on a great evening which we all thoroughly enjoyed. Rodger Kimpton 24 • Tanglin Club

sports SQUASH Mike Murphy's Farewell

Novices, Masters and Veterans Tournament The Novices, Masters and Veterans tournament was

A farewell party was held for Mike Murphy and his wife, Anne,

in the Raffles Room on Friday 4 July, which also happened to be the birthday of Chris Clarldge and the Convenor and thus a great excuse for another Squash Section social event. Mike has been a major contributor to the Squash Section not only as a player but also as a Squash Committee member.

His 'dinky' shots into the front corners on both the singles and doubles courts when struggling to win the point will always be remembered not the least of whom by his doubles partner. As part of the Organising Committee for the Club's

Annual International Jumbo Squash Doubles Competition,

held over the period 9 to 28 June and this year for the first time for a number of years there were sufficient

entries to run the Novices category - thanks mainly to the Hill family.

For the record the Novices was won by James Hill with James Tan, the runner-up. In the Masters event Zoher Motiwalla beat Dalip Purl in the final of the main event whilst Milton Wee won the Plate with

Richard Coventry the Plate runner-up. In the Veterans, Munir Shah became the winner of the Steve Buster

Shield beating Peter Rogers in the final, whilst in the plate Rob Crewdson beat Bob Gattie to take the Plate title.

Mike has played an immense role in obtaining the all-critical sponsorship and also creating the various designs for the

Graham Dare

tournament T-shirts, of which probably the one for this year's tournament was his piece de resistance. He will be a difficult person to replace on these Committees. Some 50 members of the Section turned up to bid him farewell and all had a very enjoyable evening, indeed I don't think

there were the usual numbers for the Saturday afternoon social squash the following day. The Section presented him

with a lead crystal red wine decanter, an engraved Tanglin Club pewter beer tankard and of course a suitable inscribed Tanglin Club Squash Shield. We wish him and Anne all happiness initially in New York

and thereafter In England/France or wherever they may decide to go but look forward to welcoming them back to the Club when they pass through Singapore.

Other prizes were presented to Anthony Rawlinson who narrowly defeated Bob Gattie for Best Newcomer honour and Ricardo Coventry for Giant Killer. Richard who mainly concentrates on killing off his Squash opponents somehow squashed number two seed Rodger Kimpton in the second round.
