Enkhuizen, a brief history
The ancient Enkhuizen now rests beneath the waters of the IJsselmeer. As the 13th century unfolded, the encroaching Zuiderzee began to pose challenges for its inhabitants, compelling them to seek refuge within the protective embrace of the West Frisian Ring dike. It was within this new haven that Enkhuizen was officially bestowed with city rights in the year 1356.
Herring fishing and shipping industry made Enkhuizen one of the most important cities on the Zuiderzee. Many businesses established themselves in Enkhuizen, including sailmakers, rope factories, and carpentry workshops for shipbuilding. In 1622, Enkhuizen was the fifth largest city in Holland, with nearly 22,000 inhabitants.
This boom was primarily attributed to the lucrative trade with the Baltic countries. This trade provided the funds for the foreign expeditions of the Dutch East and West India Companies. Loaded with gold and silver, the VOC ships set sail for the East, returning with spices, tea, coffee, cotton, sugar, copper, indigo, and porcelain.
In the second half of the Golden Age (1588-1672), when many merchants moved to Amsterdam,
(1817-1891) CORNELIS SPRINGER
the population declined. In the Boerenhoek (Farmers’ Corner), buildings were even demolished so that the farmers could reoccupy the land.
It was only after the completion of the railway connection with Amsterdam in 1885 that Enkhuizen started to grow again. The rise of seed production and seed trade also gradually brought more prosperity to the town.
Today, Enkhuizen stands as the pulsating heart of Seed Valley, serving as the global epicenter for plant breeding and seed technology. Tourism also plays a significant role in its economy, attracting visitors eager to explore its rich history and picturesque surroundings.

The treasure trove of Enkhuizen
Enkhuizen, a city rich in Dutch history, boasts countless monuments that weave captivating tales of the past. Explore its streets up close to uncover the treasures of its impressive heritage, each corner offering a glimpse into its fascinating narrative.

Koepoort (entrance gate - built in 1649)
Stadhuis (town hall - built in 1688)
Zuider- of Sint Pancraskerk (church - built between 1423 and 1524)

Kleine en grote weeshuis (orphanages - built in 1616 & 1906)
You can find a map on pages 50-51 showing the locations of the monuments.
In the Zuiderkerk, you can admire the largest medieval vault paintings in the whole of the Netherlands. The 54 scenes together form a unique artwork of no less than 1300 square meters. So remarkable that an expert even dubbed it the ‘Night Watch of Enkhuizen’. So be sure to take a look!
Drommedaris
Grand orphanage
Wester- of Sint Gomaruskerk
The construction of this impressive house of worship began around 1470 and would take nearly fifty years. Highlights of this church include the famous choir screen from 1542 and the organ case from 1549. The latter is considered one of the oldest and most beautiful organ cases in the Netherlands.
If you take the spiral staircase up to the south portal, you’ll feel like you’ve traveled back 400 years in time. Here you’ll find the Librije (a seventeenth-century city library) and the church council chamber with gilt leather wallpaper, stained glass windows, and a biblical tile tableau from around 1740.
Step inside
During the summer months, the Westerkerk, Zuiderkerk, and the city prison open their doors to the public. In the afternoons, you can explore these historic landmarks from the inside. The stunning hall of the town hall and the iconic Drommedaris fortress tower are open for visitors all year round. Check their websites for opening hours.
TIP!
Visit museum Sow to Grow, beautifully housed in the grand orphanage. It’s the perfect chance to peek inside the two lavishly restored style rooms — with magnificent gilt leather wallpaper and elegant Louis XV-style fireplaces. A true hidden gem!

Koepoort (1649)
TIP!
Snouck van Loosenpark
Another gem is the Snouck van Loosenpark, one of the first social housing projects in the Netherlands. We owe this idyllic park to lady Maria Margaretha Snouck van Loosen (18071885). She was the last of six childless sisters from the wealthy Snouck van Loosen family and had stipulated in her will that after her death the entire family fortune had to be ‘returned’ to the city. Part of the money had to be used to provide housing for working-class families. In 1897, twelve years after her death, the Snouck van Loosenpark with 51 houses was opened. It remains a green oasis of tranquility to this day.
Open Monumentendag, an annual event on the second weekend of September is a great opportunity to explore Enkhuizen’s historic sites from the inside. On this day, doors that usually remain closed are opened to the public.

Zuiderzee Museum
This beautiful open-air museum brings stories of the people who once lived on the shores of the Zuiderzee to life. See, hear, feel, taste and smell everyday life round the Zuiderzee as it was before the Afsluitdijk (the great IJsselmeer Barrier Dam) turned the former inland sea into what we now know as the IJsselmeer, in 1932. The Zuiderzee Museum focuses on the history, current situation and future of the region. Themes such as water, crafts and communities occupy centre stage. These stories are visualized in the Zuiderzee village with its historic buildings, and in the Treasure House through thematic exhibitions.
Treasure House (open daily from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM)
In the Treasure House you can discover the treasures of the Zuiderzee; here the various collections are presented with a modern approach. Dive into a Sea of Stories and experience life on the former Zuiderzee in this interactive exhibition. Also admire the large collection of historic boats in the Ships’ Hall. Curious? Take a look at the website to see what exhibitions you can currently visit.
Zuiderzee village (open from March/April to October)
Stroll along the cobbled streets of the Zuiderzee village and go back in time! With over 140 historic buildings from places in the former Zuiderzee region, the Zuiderzee village is a village of its own. Visit the post office, meet residents from the former island of Urk and give a hand with old crafts. Don’t forget to visit the modern design presentations based on work and life as it used to be. Feeling peckish? Tuck into fresh-smoked fish at the fish-smoking shed or descend on the Café Hindeloopen to enjoy the wonderful view of the IJsselmeer. zuiderzeemuseum.nl
Museum Sow to Grow
Did you know that the Netherlands is the ‘world champion’ in plant breeding? At museum Sow to Grow, you’ll discover everything about this fascinating branch of the plant sector and all that it entails. You’ll also learn more about the development of the world’s population, how plants form the basis of our food system, and how DNA works. At first glance, this might sound a bit dull, but it certainly isn’t! A whole new world will open up to you!
Bottle ship museum
During their long voyages, sailors used to create bottled ships during periods of calm weather. It’s a clever precision craft where all parts must be brought into the bottle through its neck.
The Bottle ship museum, housed in a charming 16th-century lockkeeper’s cottage, boasts the world’s largest collection of these creations. With over a thousand specimens, ranging in all shapes and sizes from all corners of the globe! Featuring ships from historical sailing, as well as fishing, whaling, and rescue missions. A continuous video presentation demonstrates the meticulous process of placing a ship inside the bottle.

Enkhuizen is full of music. Throughout the year, you can enjoy music in all styles at unique locations.
One of the most swinging weekends of the year is with the Jazz Festival Enkhuizen. A musical celebration with the historic city center as its backdrop.
Another absolute recommendation is the Zuider Havendijk concert. A summer open-air concert featuring light classical music on one of the most charming canals of Enkhuizen. Suitable for all ages. Reservations or ticket purchases are not necessary. However, bring your own chair—and for even more fun, don’t forget a tasty snack and a nice drink!
The historic city center of Enkhuizen also serves as the musical stage for the Trekzakfestival (June) and Koopkorenfestival (October). Enjoy also the (sometimes spontaneous) music performances in the Drommedaris and local hospitality venues. Do you love guitar music? Then visit the guitar festival at the Zuiderzee Museum in June! In the Krabbersgat, one of the busiest shipping routes on the IJsselmeer, lies the Gependam. Here, the impressive charters of the historic fleet offer breathtaking views. The dock is often filled with passengers disembarking from river cruise ships to explore Enkhuizen.
The Veerhaven is also part of the Municipal Harbors. From here, you can take the ferry to Stavoren, Urk, Medemblik, and, of course, to the Zuiderzee Museum.
Night register
Since May 2021, the Municipal Harbors have been required to maintain a night register to ensure a smooth and safe harbor experience for all visitors. This means the details of your ship and its captain will be registered digitally, simultaneously with the payment of the harbor fee.
Harbor fee
The harbor fee must be paid on the day of arrival. You can do this via www.i-marina.eu.
Log in on the website or scan the QR code on the sign near your berth.
Follow the steps for payment and registration in the night register. After payment, you will receive a confirmation email with all harbor information.
Good to know
To use electricity, water, and the sanitary facilities on both sides of the harbor, you need a SEP card. You can purchase and top up this card at the machine under the harbor office or at the sanitary building next to the VVV Tourist Information.
The Municipal Harbors are equipped with a waste water station where pleasure crafts can dispose of their waste water tanks and bilge water for free.
Around the harbors, there are containers at various locations for paper, glass, and residual waste. Together, we keep Enkhuizen and the IJsselmeer clean.
Scan the code for more information about the Municipal Harbors and its facilities.
Compagnieshaven
The Compagnieshaven is a modern, well-equipped marina that meets the latest international standards. Located right by the IJsselmeer and just a few minutes’ walk from the historic center of Enkhuizen. The train and bus stations are also easily accessible.
Around the Compagnieshaven, you’ll find all the facilities you need for a pleasant stay. Its fantastic location, adjacent to the centuries-old town center and the beautiful Zuiderzee Museum, immediately sets the vacation mood.
At the on-site restaurant, De Mastenbar, you can enjoy a delicious lunch, dinner, or drink. The terrace offers a stunning view of the Krabbersgat, with passing ships creating an ever-changing panorama. Right next to the Mastenbar, there is a fenced, safe playground for little ones. Sprookjeswonderland, the indoor pool, and the Kindervreugde playground are all within walking distance.
On the marina grounds, you’ll also find a supermarket and a sailmaker. Jachtservice Enkhuizen is happy to help with engine issues or maintenance. For boat supplies, sailing gear, and gas bottles, you can visit Joosten Watersport. Gasoline, diesel, and the ultra-clean GTL are also available at the marina.
Coming from the IJsselmeer, you’ll enter the Krabbersgat. The first harbor on the starboard side is Compagnieshaven. Continue until just before the harbor building, where one of the friendly harbor masters will assign you a mooring spot from the waiting dock.
All 625 moorings come with power (16 Amp), water, and WiFi, all included in the price. No extra charges, cards, or coins are needed for showers either.
You can leave the harbor area through the main entrance next to Joosten Watersport or through the Staverse Poortje, built in 1615. This passage is part of the stone seawall that forms the water barrier for the eastern part of the city center. The wall was built in 1608 on a lower dike dating back to 1567 and served both as a seawall and a defensive structure.
Staverse Poortje
Buyshaven
A green oasis in the heart of historic Enkhuizen.
Tucked away behind the central railway station on the southern side of the Krabbersgat lies Enkhuizen’s bestkept secret: the Buyshaven Marina. This small-scale, welcoming, and green marina offers personal attention from the harbour master.
Fresh bread delivered each morning by the local baker and free bikes to ride into the city centre give Buyshaven a unique charm. It’s also an ideal spot for picking up or dropping off crew, as it’s just a ten-minute walk from the train station.
The Buyshaven offers two types of moorings. Under the guidance
of the harbour master, you can choose a berth on one of the new jetties in the outer part, right behind the Gependam. It’s delightfully cool here in summer, with great views over the Krabbersgat. Alternatively, you can opt for a berth in the inner harbour, where you’ll be fully sheltered from the wind when the weather is more inclement.
Among the trees, you’ll find the Kombuys: a cozy clubhouse open to all, where visitors still pay for drinks based on trust (how often do you see that nowadays?).
It’s the perfect spot to warm up on a chilly day or to relax on warm summer evenings. There are several barbecues available on-site, free to use once you check in with the harbour master—everything you need to extend your wonderful day on the water into a relaxing evening while watching the sunset.
Naturally, there is free Wi-Fi, modern toilet, shower, and laundry facilities, as well as electricity and water—all included in the berthing fee.
The Buyshaven Marina is owned by the Royal Netherlands Yacht Club (Koninklijke Nederlandsche Zeil- & Roeivereeniging in Dutch).
Founded in 1847, the oldest watersports club in the Netherlands boasts a rich heritage and continues to thrive today. You don’t need to be a member to stay overnight—the Buyshaven is open to all. If you’re continuing your journey southward, you’re also welcome to visit Muiden, where the other marina of the Royal Netherlands Yacht Club is located.

DE GARDEN
Enkhuizen
Escape the hustle and bustle of the city and find tranquility amidst the greenery. In Enkhuizen, you don’t have to leave the city to do so. With two city parks and a beautiful discovery garden, there’s always a green oasis nearby.
Wilhelminaplantsoen
A great place to relax is Wilhelminaplantsoen. A stately park with seven bubbling fountains. In the heart of the park, you’ll find one of Enkhuizen’s hidden gems: the tea garden of Hertenkamp Enkhuizen. Here, you can enjoy stunning views of the animal enclosure while indulging in a delicious cup of coffee with homemade pastries or a tasty lunch.
De Garden
At the foot of the ramparts, right next to the historic Koepoort, you’ll find De Garden. A discovery garden full of flowers, vegetables, and herbs. During the season, it’s a riot of colors. From above, it looks like a kaleidoscope! The garden can be visited on various themed days and during the season (July to September) on Wednesday mornings, Saturdays, and Sundays.
Check the event calendar for the latest date!
TIP!
The annual Hobby & Kunstroute in May is a unique opportunity to admire hidden gardens. Residents of the characteristic Boerenhoek open their gardens to the public and give artists the opportunity to exhibit their work.
Snouck van Loosenpark
Snouck van Loosenpark is one of the most beautiful spots in Enkhuizen. This idyllic park was created in 1897, blending an elegant mix of English and French styles. At the heart of the park stands a sundial, and atop the flagpole is a weather vane featuring the initials of Margaretha Maria Snouck van Loosen, the philanthropist to whom this park owes its existence. In July, a lively flea market is held here.
TIP!
In front of museum
