eeing the world, throwing yourself into life-changing experiences and broadening your horizons is what travel is all about… Whether you prefer to island hop, discover unreachable and unexplored coastlines, sail upriver or navigate the globe, part of the appeal of yachting is the freedom to get up and go when the feeling takes us. There are times and places, though, when it’s safest to let another captain take the strain – as it was on my recent exploration of the incredible Antarctic wilderness (page 46). Not somewhere I would ever consider sailing myself, this vast snowy desert is best experienced with an expert crew and small group of friends, a once in a lifetime adventure that will change you forever. If you’re planning a trip closer to home, this issue we’ve rounded up some of the best marinas, hotels and destinations both at home and abroad (from page 54), and the RYA is on hand with advice to help you choose the best place to berth your boat (page 27). Wherever you travel, it’s impossible not to notice the negative impact humans have had on the aquatic environment, which is why we’d like to introduce our chosen charity of 2017, the Marine Conservation Society (page 68). MCS works to improve the quality of our oceans, preserving the wildlife in them, and ensuring that we – and future generations – can continue to enjoy them. A very worthy cause, I’m sure you’ll agree. Enjoy the issue!

he new Bavaria R40 is a true game changer in the 40ft motoryacht category, available as both Flybridge and Coupe with a sliding roof. Her recent launch marks a change in direction for Bavaria, with the emphasis clearly on scintillating performance and handling as well as living accommodation. Drawing on designer Robert Chaffer’s 25 years’ experience at Princess Yachts, she is truly stunning. Her hugely spacious full-beam master cabin with large hull windows provides a very welcoming area to relax, and guests are equally well accommodated in the vast forward cabin with optional scissor berths. The saloon is bright and welcoming with excellent visibility when anchored as well as underway. These features, coupled with a genuine 37 knot top speed, give the market a truly unique boat. This led MBY’s David Marsh to comment that “What is beyond doubt is that Bavaria’s R40 provides a very appealing new addition to this popular corner of the market”. See the new Bavaria R40 Flybridge and Coupe at Clipper Marine in Swanwick Marina, Southampton.

From sail to power, we’ve rounded up the latest new launches from around the world for your window-shopping pleasure

Fjord

42 Open

Fjord is known for unique powerboats, and the 42 Open is no different – the vertical bow and a clear visual language make up this outstanding new design from Patrick Banfield. The 12.59m long and 4.27m wide powerboat is both sporty and multifunctional, with a striking hull design and flat deck layout. The large bathing platform can be lowered hydraulically and used for a dinghy or to access the water. The anchor can be raised and hydraulically stowed in the anchor locker on the bow by the push of a button from the dashboard. The new T-Top contains lots of electronics, first and foremost the electrically retractable soft-top bimini, which shadows the rear cockpit area on request. 12 |

The new Fjord 42 open is powered by two Volvo Penta IPS engines with 370hp (or optional with 435hp each), the larger IPS 600 engines accelerating it to 40 knots and more. It’s an all-round smooth experience with a joystick enabling easy manoeuvring, an efficient IPS Forward Drive and everything controlled via an innovative dashboard that can be equipped with two 16 inch Raymarine displays. The touch screen displays can thereby be operated from all three sport seats. Price from £480,700 inc VAT (all prices are inclusive of delivery to the UK, antifouling, launching and commissioning). Sedna

24

The new Sedna Yachts range, including the 24, 26, 30 and new 40 (later in 2017) are distributed in Europe by Edge-Water Marine Ltd of the UK. Displayed at the Boot Düsseldorf, the 24 was received extremely wellreceived by the general public and potential dealers. She is a capable sea boat with a quality feel to the interior. At 1,600kg the 24 is trailerable, even by most small 4x4 cars.

Price from €34,995 (on-the-water, fully commissioned and inc 19% tax). Edge Water +44 (0)2392 388884 edge-water.co.uk nick@edge-water.co.uk

Fairline

Squadron 53

Hand crafted to order by Fairline’s highly experienced and dedicated craftsmen in Oundle, England, the new Squadron 53 offers boaters total command and control thanks to its striking swept flybridge, while exuding style and offering great entertaining spaces onboard. Fairline’s approach, from superior engineering and multiple layout options, to small details that delight, makes the Squadron 53 the perfect choice for those who want their yacht their way. Mancini’s design has resulted in a spacious main deck with a flat floor from the cockpit to the lower helm, which in turn ensures a flat ceiling in the master cabin offering a generous 6ft 4in headroom at the foot of the large double bed, adding to the overall sense of space in this expansive 55ft 6in

(16.92m)-long cruiser. The clever layout configurations provide owners with complete flexibility, including three or four cabins and multiple galley arrangements including the main deck, forward or aft locations or below deck, as well as the new addition of foredeck seating. There is a choice of twin diesel engines, all shaft driven – the Volvo Penta D11-675 or D11-725 and the Caterpillar C12.9 with 850mhp, which is expected to achieve a minimum fully-loaded speed of 34 knots and, when driven at a more sedate pace, a range of at least 300 nautical miles. Price from £755,500 exc VAT. Fairline.com Issue 12 |

Axopar

37SC

The new Axopar 37SC (Sports Cabin) is a sleeker, sportier interpretation of the already successful Axopar 37 Cabin and Aft Cabin versions. A unique benchmark in affordable island hopping and fast, comfortable cruising, the new SC (Sports Cabin) version is another fine example of Axopar’s intelligent, versatile deck designs. With its steeply-raked front screen and sportier profile, the ‘hybrid’ appeal of the SC version places it squarely in-between the fun inspired Axopar Sun-Top and T-Top ‘open’ versions, and the more protected, utilitarian nature of the ‘enclosed’ Axopar Cabin and Aft Cabin versions. Intended to satisfy the needs of a wide cross-section of the international boat buying public, the versatile design of the SC and the way it can be

fully ‘opened-up’, means it will also appeal to a high percentage of those who would only ever have considered buying a fully ‘open’ boat, such as a sports boat or RIB. Inside there’s a double-berth fore-cabin with toilet, integrated internal storage, cupboard space and an internal cabin seat and an optional aftcabin can be added to increase overnight capacity from 2 to 4 people. With twin 300hp fuel efficient outboard engine package, customers can expect 40 knots plus and the kind of performance that competitor boats would need three outboard engines to compare with, plus the added burden of higher fuel consumption and maintenance cost as a result. Starting price: £73,000 (exc VAT, exc engines and exc works). axopar.fi

Ancasta

Prestige 460

Ancasta has announced the arrival of a new model in the Prestige flybridge range: the Prestige 460. Powered by twin VOLVO IPS500 or IPS600 engines, which allow for better efficiency and easy handling, the new Prestige 460 will take over the hull lines of the excellent Prestige 450. The deck and all the layouts have been rethought and benefit from latest improvements in terms of design and ergonomics. Designed by Garroni Design and engineered by JP Concepts, the Prestige 460 will offer contemporary and timeless design, consistent with the DNA of the latest Prestige Yachts; the Prestige 630 and Prestige 680. The Prestige DNA makes these luxury motor yachts stand out, 14 |

features include enlarged wheelhouse windows, which will be a particular feature in the design of the Prestige 460. The Prestige 460 will launch on the European market at the 40th edition of the Cannes Yachting Festival in September 2017. he newly debuted 76 feet Suprema from Adler Yacht has been received with widespread praise for its innovative design, hybrid propulsion system and advanced technology, created by leaders in the marine, aviation and automotive industries across Europe. This has ensured the resulting vessel forges a new path for flybridge yachts within this size range. Swiss brand Adler Yacht, which has close ties to the aviation business, chose to build its yachts in Monfalcone, near Trieste, on the Adriatic Coast of northern Italy. This allows the company’s superstylish yachts to benefit from the renowned Italian craftsmanship and yacht building expertise. When it came to selecting design and engineering teams, Adler Yacht wanted nothing but the best from Italy, Germany and Austria. Nuvolari-Lenard, the highly awarded and renowned Venice-based superyacht design studio, provided both interior and exterior design

for the Adler Suprema, which is constructed from carbon fibre, Kevlar® and fibreglass to provide a tough and rigid hull that is also sporty and efficient. It is the first carbon fibre yacht in its category. The Suprema’s Hybrid Marine Solutions (HMS) propulsion system was developed by Germany and Austria-based TTControl GmbH, Aradex GmbH and Akasol GmbH, which are experienced in the marine and automotive industries. Two years of testing and four years of development on the hybrid system have resulted in what is probably the most efficient yacht in its class, with up to 50% more efficiency than a conventional system. At a rate of 8 knots, with a fuel capacity of 5,200 litres, the yacht can provide a range of over 3,500nm. The result is a trailblazing 23.11m flybridge yacht that offers many of the comforts and technology one rarely sees on a superyacht, let alone a vessel in this size category.

A

They say you never get a second chance to make a first impression. Sweeping in aboard a Princess S65 (ironically itself a ‘crossover’ yacht, bridging the gap between sports yacht and flybridge), my first sighting of the Princess 30M is anchored serenely in a quiet bay a few miles west of Port Adriano on the south coast of Mallorca, and it’s abundantly clear that the 30M doesn’t need one – it looks stunning. The rich dark blue topsides extend to the top of the bulwarks, disguising the proliferation of dark tinted

hull windows, while the architecture of the topsides consist mainly of a confident arch rising gracefully from stem to aft tip of flybridge bisected by a second sweep from the top of the pilothouse down to the stern where it segues smoothly into the flow of the transom. Two years of intensive development, from first sketches at the Dusseldorf boat show in 2014 to the launch at the same show this year, have paid off – this is a very handsome yacht. Once aboard, the differences between

crossover yacht, designed to bridge the gap between our flybridge range and our full on superyachts, giving the principle benefits of both’ is how Kiran Haslam, Marketing Director of Princess Yachts International, sums up the brand new 30M. Ostensibly a replacement for the Princess 98 – that model very firmly a flybridge boat – the 30M is an entirely different prospect, a fact that becomes obvious the moment I first clap eyes on PYI’s latest M-Class prodigy.

 The galley is built for practicality, but with the usual Princess attention to style and detail. There’s plenty of space to get creative in this kitchen

 Generous beds in the guest cabins, like this starboard twin room, can be motored together to create further doubles if required

 The massive amounts of glazing extend to even the master bathroom, with possibly the best shower view on board a yacht!

the 98 and this similarly sized vessel come thick and fast, nowhere more evidently than the master cabin. Where the 98 had a full beam master on the lower deck in line with almost all other Princess yachts in the flybridge range, the 30M cements its superyacht credentials with a main deck master up front. And it is magnificent; the feeling of space augmented by huge glass windows either side (bulwarks cut away for an uninterrupted vista) while further glazing

overhead throws yet more natural light into this stateroom. The detailing is good too – witness the multi-faceted floating occasional table and airline chairs. Lined with pale marble, the en suite bathroom behind the forward bulkhead also benefits from those large side windows. Head aft past the capacious concealed galley (containing access to the three berth crew cabins and side door access to the port deck as well as direct access to the dining

area, allowing the crew to remain totally separate from the main accommodation) and you find the saloon. Huge glazing is evident once again, incorporating sliding glass doors to a drop-down balcony on the starboard side. Princess Yachts claim 85% of the yacht is manufactured and built ‘in-house’ at its yard in Plymouth. It’s a fact made all the more impressive when you examine details like the graceful oval dining table. Finished

 The Princess 30M’s elegant superstructure is defined by two soaring arcs from stern to aft tip of the flybridge

in flawless high gloss Macassar Ebony with a contrasting cream leather padding beneath, it would grace any high-end West London furniture boutique. Vertically integrated from the entire hull moulding to seam welding the black water tanks, only items like engines and electronics are third party sourced, giving unprecedented control over sourcing, manufacturing and final supply, not to mention the sheer level of choice. The only area where the Princess 30M’s superyacht crown slips slightly is interior layout choice, which is largely fixed. Only the lower deck standard layout of four large and

equally sized guest cabins (two doubles and two singles, the latter of which feature beds that motor together to create further doubles if required) can be modified by swapping the aft pair of cabins for one huge single suite. Head up through the business-like raised pilothouse (another superyacht feature gained over the outgoing 98) to the flybridge however, and choice reigns supreme. The (slightly raised) upper helm is fixed, everything else is up for grabs. A perfect example of this exists aboard our test boat – the first 30M from the factory. The owner chose to have the (optional) jacuzzi brought

forward and spun through ninety degrees to create room at the aft end of the flybridge for something rather special. A custom made Opacmare crane with 1.2 tonne capacity lives on the starboard side, poised to lift a bespoke stainless steel and toughened glass display case from dock to trailing edge of flybridge where locks in place, it showing off a fabulous Harley Davidson style motorcycle. And it’s no static display – the cabinet opens up once on the dock to release the bike for road use. So far so 24-carat superyacht, but what  of the exalted flybridge yacht crossover we

came in with? Well to get to the bottom of this you first need to examine the specifications, where you’ll discover a load line length cunning pegged just below 24m, meaning that MCA MGM 280 (small vessels in commercial use) is all that’s required for charter. You’ll also discover a draft of just 2.3m, ideal for accessing shallow water areas like the Bahamas. But to really understand the dual-purpose nature of this yacht, you need to fire up the twin MTU 16V 2000 M94 engines (the largest of three options) and unleash the combined 5,000+ horsepower. Situated right aft (the tender garage for a 7m Williams Dieseljet partly extends over them, however access is superb), the motors transmit their copious power through vee drives. Thrust bearing couplings allow gearboxes to be ‘soft mounted’, considerably reducing noise and vibration throughout the yacht. It works too, at speed – even in the aft cabins of the lower deck – the merest hint of vibration is quite simply nonexistent. It is properly quiet. At 10 knots the 30M is sipping diesel at a (comparatively) miserly 100 litres per hour for a range of over a thousand miles. But ease the throttles forward and the result is distinctly un-superyacht and decidedly sporty, the (Bernard Olesinski designed) planing hull lifting its 100 tonnes and running with remarkable alacrity. Princess Yachts International claim to have seen almost 30 knots out of this boat, entirely believable given that it is nudging 27 knots fully loaded! Marina’s verdict The Princess 30M delivers on that crossover promise in spades. With that sub-24m load line length, low draught and high levels of performance it nails the sports flybridge benefits part of the brief. But the joy of it is that you can keep all this to yourself if you wish – allowing the card carrying superyacht credentials to shine through. As promised, this is an entirely different proposition to the 98 flybridge Princess it replaces – indeed it is no understatement to suggest that what you are looking at here is the sub 100ft LOA state of the art. 24 |

’ve just booked my summer holiday using one of the many online comparison sites. I had a set budget and knew the region I wanted to visit. But like many, often, once I have found a decent looking hotel, the Trip Advisor reviews vary from people likening the place to Buckingham Palace to a jail cell! Typically I will look to a reliable independent assessment of the accommodation such as a star rating that is consistently applied by an organisation I trust. With this in mind how does one choose a suitable marina to stay at when planning a cruise? How can costs be compared? Facilities? Locations? For me it is easy: using the Gold Anchor scheme not only tells me the level of facilities on offer but it

also tells me that customer service and quality control is assessed and for a few years now, environmental criteria have been integrated into the scheme too.

 The Royal Yachting Association carry out environmental audit at Port Vell marina

What is the Gold Anchor Scheme? The Yacht Harbour Association (TYHA) that operates the Gold Anchor Award Scheme has recently joined forces with the Australian Marina Industries Association to operate a truly global Gold Anchor scheme with the same criteria. For those of you who don’t know how the scheme works, marinas are able to apply for a Gold Anchor assessment once initial stringent criteria have been met. Then, an independent assessor will visit the marina and carry out a thorough review of the facilities and procedures. Additionally (and separate to the 

audit) a berth holder questionnaire and visits by mystery shoppers all ensure that there is a mechanism to ensure high customer service levels are maintained. Because environmental criteria are found in the new award scheme you can also rely on the fact that all Gold Anchor marinas now meet a certain environmental standard; for example, all marinas will have absorbent boom and pads available to deal with oil and fuel spills. Furthermore, there must be access to sewage pump out facilities, which for those of us who spend time in the water after capsizing smaller vessels will appreciate (as well as those of us who intend on purchasing a new boat that will have a holding tank fitted due to the new Recreational Craft Directive regulations).

 Portland Marina, on the UK’s south coast, utilises both solar and wind renewable energy generation

28 |

Keeping things tidy As well as ensuring marinas have suitable recycling facilities, marinas should manage the flotsam and jetsam and this means that your boat won’t be surrounded by plastic objects blown into the marina from the nearest town or a rogue flip flop bought in on the tide. Mayflower Marina in Plymouth meticulously clean their marina and have found all sorts from inflatable alligators to boomerangs.

In recent years you do not find many marinas at capacity (unless you are expecting to find a berth in Cowes during Cowes Week!). This means that marinas are finding themselves in even more competition with each other – great for boat owners. As a savvy group of boaters, if more of us ask why a marina does not have Gold Anchors or a working pump out facility or spill kits available next to the fuel berth it will be increasingly likely that we can use our consumer power to influence some positive change. The Green Blue works for free with marinas to help them meet their environmental obligations through carrying out environmental audits; I have carried out close to 100 audits. Having helped all of the UK ‘marina of the year’ winners in some capacity, it shows that a marina that prioritises taking care of the environment (our playground) is one which also can be an excellent place to keep your boat. It’s not just your typical British coastal marinas who are improving their standards as a result of the Gold Anchor scheme, I’ve been lucky enough to visit superyacht marinas such as Porto Montenegro and Port Vell (both marinas can accommodate a 190m vessel!). Both marinas have full environmental management systems certified to ISO 14001 and

 MDL marinas provide recycling points for berth holders

 Fambridge Yacht Haven’s ‘of use to others’ bin means you can reuse as well as recycle

a number of other environmental initiatives ranging from renewable energy generation to electric car charging points. In general, the key environmental points for a marina to manage are hazardous waste (so making sure that there are separate facilities for oil, oil filters, lead acid batteries as well as your antifoul tins). Then there is the washing down of your boat: antifoul leaching from your hull over a long period is different to a concentrated effluent when being pressure washed and this should not go back into the marine environment. Some marinas we work with have had educational outreach activities in which berth holders are given bilge socks (which absorb oil and fuel in the bilge) fuel collars and super spouts. In general, anything where oil and fuel is involved needs careful management. Some of the initiatives that marinas in the UK have implemented range from native oyster habitat creation (MDL), a reuse scheme for boat items which still have life in them (Fambridge Yacht Haven), Waters source heat pumps (Suffolk Yacht Harbour) In summary, marinas are looking to sell perfection and there is no place for pollution in perfection. We’d love to hear your feedback on environmental issues that your marina is tackling or you think it should be tackling. And when you are planning your next cruise or even your next home marina why not look at which marinas have Gold Anchors?

Riviera Yacht Support French yacht agency donates vital funds raised from a recent golfing day to the Antibes SNSM Lifeboat, ensuring ongoing sea safety reports Rebecca Whitlocke from Access Riviera

T

he Riviera Yacht Support Golf Bonanza is an annual golfing day open to superyacht industry professionals and is held a short drive inland from Antibes at the 18-hole Grande Bastide Golf Course at Châteauneuf-Opio. The event’s popularity is growing each year and sees attendees enjoy friendly competition on the greens, 19th-hole Champagne reception, a three-course lunch with wine and a generous prizegiving with prizes including a Mercedes SLC Roadster for a Hole-inOne, golf merchandise and restaurant vouchers. The 2016 event welcomed 100 players for golf and another 60 attendees for the lunch. Hosted by Riviera Yacht Support, one of the Mediterranean’s premier yacht agencies, they pledged to donate a portion of player registration fees to the Antibes SNSM Lifeboat. General Manager Angus Reid was thrilled to deliver a cheque to the Antibes SNSM Lifeboat crew, ‘We’re very happy to report that the success of our Riviera Yacht Support Golf Bonanza resulted in

30 |

a donation of €662 to the Antibes SNSM Lifeboat who are an important cornerstone of the Mediterranean yachting community.’ Lifeboat Cox Wladimir Herman said the funds will be used to replace towlines which are a crucial safety element to their rescue operations. The French Riviera’s largest lifeboat The French association Les Sauveteurs en Mer (SNSM) was founded in 1967 and since that time has attended over 5,200 interventions that has resulted in the rescue or assistance to 7,700 people. Operating from 218 rescue stations and 242 beach rescue stations, their foremost mission is saving lives at sea or on the coast. This includes the French Riviera region, part of the Alpes Maritimes department. The Antibes SNSM Lifeboat is the largest lifeboat in the Alpes Maritimes department and is based at Port Vauban. For recreational and commercial marine vessels that use the waterways between Antibes and Corsica this is their lifeboat in a popular touristic region in France; Nice Côte d’Azur Airport is a major hub and the third busiest

French airport after the Parisian airports. The Antibes SNSM Lifeboat Notre Dame de la Garoupe II takes to the sea within 15 minutes following a call. The Lifeboat is able to face a strong sea, with a speed of up to 27 knots. It is run by a team of volunteers who are trained and equipped for sea rescue, medical evacuation and firefighting. They give their time and risk their lives without financial compensation and are available on emergency call 24/7, 365 days a year. Operating expenses require a considerable budget – to replace the headliner at today’s price would be €1.2 million – therefore public donations are essential to help cover day-to-day costs for fuel, maintenance, navigation equipment, safety equipment, medical kit, insurance and crew training.

n Monday 27 May 1940, a group of minesweepers including HMS Medway Queen were at anchor near Dover. Unexpectedly, a considerable quantity of extra stores was issued and the officers and wireless operators were called to briefing sessions. Medway Queen’s commanding officer, Lieutenant AT Cook RNR, gave orders to prepare to feed several hundred “somewhat peckish” men expected on board later. At 1900hrs the flotilla weighed anchor and the eight paddlers steamed in line ahead towards Dunkirk. The “phoney war” on land had ended with the Norwegian campaign, and the German Army launched its attack on France. German armour headed for the Channel to trap the allied armies. Outgunned and out-manoeuvred, the allies fell back towards the coast and, with the loss of Boulogne and Calais, were forced into an ever-smaller perimeter. Destroyers evacuating the army from Boulogne duelled at close range with the panzers as they entered the harbour area; the tanks lost. The British Expeditionary Force and the French First Army retreated towards Dunkirk, a large modern port with miles of gently sloping beaches. The only way out was evacuation by sea. Vice Admiral Bertram Ramsay had little preparation time before the order to begin Operation Dynamo was issued on Sunday 26 May. Some troops had already been evacuated by destroyers and a shuttle of personnel vessels (mainly cross-channel ferries) had started with the intention of providing two ships every four hours.

Rescue mission On that first trip the gunfire was mostly inland away from the beaches. The threat of air attack was reduced by the presence of an anti-aircraft cruiser, HMS Calcutta. The ships anchored offshore and used their boats to collect men from the beaches. The soldiers, waiting in long lines that stretched down into the surf, had little experience of boats and often too many tried to board at once. Continuous baling was required just to remove the water draining from the soldier’s uniforms. AB Albert Skinner, who was in charge of one of Medway Queen’s boats, recalled afterwards that “not one of the soldiers had let go their rifles except in the case of a blinded man and then his rifle was carried by one of the men.”

Once on board they had to be fed. Cook Thomas Russell and his assistant had prepared sandwiches, Irish stew and ‘Navy Cocoa’. He described the scene: “These weren’t peckish men they were starving animals, most of them too desperately hungry to be polite – pushing, shoving and shouting. Someone opened the starboard half door and they started to flood for service right into the galley, then they tried to exit through the other door. Sec and I were serving as fast as we could but we were getting shoved back and forth and could scarcely manage. Some of the lads started to help themselves, it was pandemonium.” The flotilla left the beaches at about 0700hrs on 28 May and proceeded to Dover. Just outside the harbour an air raid developed during which Medway Queen’s gunners shot down an enemy fighter aircraft. HMS Brighton Belle (another paddler) collided with a submerged wreck and began to sink. Medway Queen went alongside and took off all the soldiers and crew, including the ship’s dog, before the ship sank. In all, the Medway Queen and her crew made seven trips to Dunkirk, loading from the beach or the East Mole of the Harbour. She spent seven nights out of eight in action. The BEF evacuation completed on 2 June and the French rear-guard was picked up over the following two days. The crew estimated that they had rescued 7,000 men and destroyed three aircraft. A number of Medway Queen’s crew received awards: the Distinguished Service Cross was awarded to Lieutenant AT Cook RNR and to Sub-lieutenant JD Graves RNR; Petty Officers AE Crossley RFR, HJ McAllister RFR and Seaman KR Olly RNR were awarded the Distinguished Service Medal; Second Engineer T Irwin and Fireman JD Connell were both mentioned in despatches. Early life Medway Queen was originally built for the New Medway Steam Packet Co Ltd in 1924, and served as an excursion vessel between the Medway Ports, Southend and Herne Bay. She operated from May to September, making trips loaded with excited holiday makers keen to explore the mysteries of the Thames Estuary’s northern coast. She was lightly built and originally coal fired, but this changed in

1938 when a new oil-fired boiler was fitted – an unforeseen benefit of which was that, just two years later, her reduced refuelling time enabled her to run more trips to Dunkirk than might otherwise have been possible. In 1939, the Medway Queen was one of the vessels tasked with moving evacuees from Dagenham and Gravesend to East Anglia, making three trips in all. Soon afterwards she was requisitioned by the Royal Navy and converted for minesweeping, commissioned as HMS Medway Queen by John Graves, her First Lieutenant, in November. HMS Medway Queen was armed with a 12pdr gun on the fore deck and a machine gun on each paddle box. Part of her aft saloon was cut away to provide working space for the minesweeping equipment, and after a lick of grey paint she set to work. She served as a front-line minesweeper, mainly on the East Coast, until January 1943 when the ship was transferred to training in Granton, Edinburgh.

The last paddle steamer After the war, PS Medway Queen returned to her old route on the Medway and Thames. Through the 1950s and into the 1960s the routine continued all summer, with winter lay-ups at the company’s maintenance yard. But by 1963 receipts were dwindling due to the rise in cheap package holidays, and maintenance costs were soaring. Medway Queen was the last paddler on the Thames and Medway, and her last voyage to Southend was on 9 September at the close of the season. She was given a massive send off from Southend pier and on arrival at the entrance to the river Medway a greeting was flashed from the Port Operations HQ. The ship made her way slowly up river to Strood, where a crowd had gathered to watch her arrival. Captain Leonard Horsham rang down ‘Stop Engines’ for the last time. Medway Queen’s next (and last) incarnation was as a restaurant and nightclub on the Isle of Wight, at what is now Island Harbour. Through the late 1960s she was a popular venue during the day and in the evenings – often exceeding the official closing time. Jazz was the favoured music style, supplemented by discos, and somehow a restaurant and galley were squeezed into the forward saloon. But times and fashions change; the club finally

Preserving history In 2010, the Gillingham Pier site was leased from Medway Council with support from the European Development Fund, and an apprentice training scheme worked to provide sub-assemblies for the hull build and to prepare for the ship’s return. On Saturday 27 July 2013, Medway Queen was rededicated in the Albion Dockyard. There were speeches and a bottle of champagne was cracked on the ship’s bow by the Managing Director’s young daughters. Over 1,000 visitors and guests came to witness this milestone,

Medway Queen Preservation Society The Medway Queen Preservation Society was formed in 1985 to support a current restoration project for the ship. With plenty of work still to do, the MQPS is actively raising funds and drumming up volunteers. If you’d like to offer assistance of any sort, please do get in touch.

and Medway Queen was handed-over to the MQPS soon afterwards. The ship was towed out of the dock on 24 October and moored in the harbour until fair weather allowed her to set off finally on Friday 15 November, arriving off Sheerness the following Monday. The next day Medway Queen berthed at Gillingham Pier. Fitting out has begun in earnest, but funds are short and progress slow. Work that has been undertaken includes companionways, temporary decking in the lower saloons, the bow rudder and main steering system. The priorities for the MQPS are safe access, restoring a saloon that can be used for revenue-generating functions, and restoring the engine room to working order, as well as improving visitor numbers. A testament to the hard work and passion of the people determined to see the Medway Queen made good again, in May 2015 she was towed to Ramsgate for the 75th anniversary of the Dunkirk Evacuation. An impressive flotilla of surviving Dunkirk Little Ships gathered in the Royal Harbour and made their way across to Dunkirk, reliving moments that are written large in our history. She is now settled in her berth at Gillingham Pier and welcomes visitors interested in seeing this fine slice of British maritime history up close.

closed in 1974 and the old ship fell out of use. In 1978 Medway Queen was purchased for preservation, and moved back to the river Medway in 1984. The Medway Queen Preservation Society (MQPS) was formed in 1985 to support this project, and in November 1987 Medway Queen was floated and towed to the Isle of Grain. The Society battled decay and corrosion until the Heritage Lottery Fund awarded a grant to rebuild the hull. The contract was awarded to Bristol’s Albion Dockyard, but consultants advised that the hull was too fragile to move. All re-usable material was moved by road, and in 2009 the keel was laid and reconstruction began.

Volunteer The MQPS is looking for volunteers to fill technical, administrative and sales/marketing roles, as well as more people to join the visitor team, and more hands specialising in woodwork and mechanical fitting would speed the ship’s fitting out. Willingness and enthusiasm are the most important qualifications! If you’d like to help out, call 01634 575717 or email info@medwayqueen.co.uk.

Visit The Medway Queen Visitor Centre on Gillingham Pier is open on Saturdays from 11am to 4pm (last admissions 3pm). The ship is accessible to visitors – you can view the great engine and visualise how it would have looked and sounded powering the ship through the water. The lower aft saloon contains displays and exhibitions; from 27 May to mid-August you can experience Memories of Dunkirk, with guides on hand to answer your questions. A number of special events are planned for 2017, including a model boat show on 15 and 16 April.

 The upper forward saloon is now in use as a coffee shop for visitors. Photographed by Richard Halton

Donate The MQPS has spent many years raising funds to restore the ship to operational use. The hull was rebuilt with the aid of the Heritage Lottery Fund and European Regional Development Fund; the next phase of the project is fitting out the ship and re-commissioning the machinery. Every penny helps to finish the Medway Queen’s restoration; you can donate via medwayqueen.co.uk or send a cheque to: Medway Queen Preservation Society, Gillingham Pier, Pier Approach Road, Gillingham, Kent ME7 1RX.

From Queensland, Australia, this revolutionary dry docking system also promises to help you moor up safely

Dry dock Revolution T

he future of affordable, in-water dry berthing has arrived… For boats up to 100ft, the FAB Dock provides the benefits of dry docking but without the need to lift your boat out of the water. Plus the FAB Dock goes one step further and actually helps guide your boat into your mooring – no fenders required! FAB Dock’s premise is simple; you drive your boat in, pump up the rear section by the air pump via a magnetic connector installed on your boat. That’s it. All done in ten minutes. The FAB Dock system looks after the rest. It empties out the water and then turns itself off. Your boat is completely dry. If it rains, the automatic sensor turns on the water pumps until the FAB Dock is dry again, and then turns itself off again. The FAB Dock is wonderfully multipurpose… We all know how hard

the docking process can be, especially on those windy days, so why ask your passenger to help, and put them at risk of falling in the water when you can just tell them to sit back and relax? The FAB Dock will have you docked in no time at all. Not only is the docking easy but this revolutionary design allows the FAB Dock to act as a fender, protecting your boat from hitting pontoons or other boats nearby. Running off shore power or a dedicated battery, the FAB Dock is can be deflated, folded and stowed. It can accommodate vessels from 15-100ft, with any hull form and drive system. The FAB Dock starts at £6,495 (inc VAT) and is available in the UK exclusively through Fine Design Marine, +44 (0)1202 465327; boats@finedesign-marine.co.uk. Issue 12 |

FLIR Ocean Scout TK

RRP £533, flir.com

The FLIR Ocean Scout TK is a marine thermal camera that extends your vision on the water, day or night, for greater awareness and safety. As a thermal imager, the Ocean Scout TK creates images based on heat, not visible light. Vessels, watercraft, buoys, and other obstacles give off heat and appear clearly in all lighting conditions – from pitch darkness to blinding sun glare. The FLIR Ocean Scout TK will help you see boats, buoys, and channel markers; identify landmarks like docks, inlets, and jetties; steer clear of rocks and floating debris; spot marine mammals; and locate people and pets overboard. It also records thermal video and will store up to 1,000 thermal snapshots. Weighing in at just 6oz, this pocket-sized thermal imager is submersible and built to withstand harsh marine environments. here’s no denying we’re a big fan of the luxury SUV here at Marina magazine – we love the bold, dominant looks and their suitability for our lifestyle – however, some drivers prefer something a little more reserved. They consider the big 4x4s to be somewhat ostentatious, and yet still desire many of the capabilities and capacities associated with these vehicles; the security and reassurance of dedicated and sophisticated fourwheel-drive systems, the load-carrying capacity of a large boot, the ground clearance to get down rutted access roads without damage – the sort of features you find in a 4x4, but not in a regular saloon or estate car. In short, they want the best of both worlds, and now, perhaps, they can have just that. Volvo first introduced the idea of an all-terrain estate with the V70 Cross Country in 1997, and while that model found favour with a certain country set, it never really hit the mainstream. Jump forward two decades and the market for premium estate cars with increased ride height and four-wheel-drive for light off-roading has strengthened, with competition from Audi’s A4 Allroad Quattro, the Skoda Octavia Scout 4x4 and even Seat’s Leon ST X-Perience all vying for a piece of the action. Volvo’s current offering in the rugged estate market comes in the form of the V60 Cross Country – an update model in the standard V60 range alongside the standard road cars and sporty R-Design models – but is this latest Cross Country worthy of the name? 

 Not quite class-leading but with 430 litres (seats up) and 1,241 litres (seats down) – and a back seat that splits 40/20/40 – there is ample luggage carrying capacity and flexibility on offer

 Well appointed and very well made, the interior of the V60 Cross Country is a nice place to spend a long journey. The seats are typically considered Volvo – extremely comfortable and highly adjustable for a perfect fit

A closer look At first glance there’s not much difference between the Cross Country and a regular V60 estate. The interior is shared with other models in the V60 range and feels typically well built, well designed and appropriately premium as befits the Volvo brand – the excellent driving position remains, with ample adjustment of steering wheel and seat to ensure all but the tallest drivers will find a comfortable driving position. Boot capacity is the same as a regular V60 too, with 430 litres available with the rear seats up, rising to 1,241 litres with the seats lowered – not quite class-leading and not a long way behind the 495 / 1,455 litre split of the bigger XC60 – amply large enough for the majority of users. Look a little closer though and the Cross Country differences start to become apparent; most noticeable of these is the 65mm increase in ride height which affords the Cross Country its greater ground clearance. Other visual differences include the black plastic wheel arch extensions, honeycomb front grille, gloss black mirrors and some rugged silver-coloured scuff plates at the fronts and rear. Parked side-by-side with a standard V60 these styling modifications are easily spotted, but seen in isolation the Cross Country model is nicely subtle and classy.

Living with a Cross Country If you’re used to the typical handling of a tall SUV, you will probably find the V60 Cross Country very sure-footed. In general driving conditions the Cross Country feels remarkably like a standard V60. Enthusiastic driving quickly highlights the 65mm increase in ride height, with more body roll in the bends and a tendency for the suspension to take longer to settle over undulations at speed. It remains a competent chassis, but perhaps lacks the precision you might expect from a regular saloon or estate. Take a road less travelled and those negatives are offset by benefits – as our brief (and absent-minded) excursion down a very steep, slippery and rutted farm track quickly revealed. In a regular V60 I’d have grounded the bottom of the car multiple times and it’s highly unlikely we would have got back up when we realised we’d gone the wrong way, however the Cross Country made light work of the wet, rocky and loose surface confronting us for our return journey – aided in no small part by the excellent traction and significant torque from the D4 engine. All engines in the range are excellent, but my pick would be the 188bhp variant of the D4 four-cylinder tested here. It offers all 400nm of torque from just 1,750 rpm and, when coupled to the excellent eight-speed automatic transmission in our review car, makes for an effortless long-distance cruiser with ample

Marina Wheels performance. The automatic transmission with sports mode provides very clean shifts and suits the lazy, torquey nature of the diesel engine, and has no impact on performance, matching the manual’s 0-60 time of just 7.5 seconds. It does, however, impact the mpg figures, with the six-speed manual matching the automatic’s overall combined 61.4mpg around town – with the manual gearbox the V60 Cross Country achieves an incredible 70.6mpg combined figure. With a maximum braked trailer towing capacity of 1,800kg the V60 Cross Country is certainly capable of towing a small boat should the need arise, and matches the capability of sibling models the XC60 and XC70 in this respect. Although, if you regularly need a large towing capacity, many of the larger SUVs available comfortably exceed this figure, with Volvo’s own XC90 offering a maximum braked trailer weight of 2,400kg. Being a Volvo you can rightly expect safety to feature prominently in the specification. In addition to the six standard fit airbags, our D4 Lux Nav review model came fitted with the Driver Support Pack – a £1,900 option that includes collision warning with full automatic braking, pedestrian and cyclist detection, distance alert, lane keeping aid, the excellent blind spot information system (with cross traffic alert) and a whole host of other driver-centric safety aids to ensure you remain as aware of what’s going on around you as possible. The Cross Country is a well-appointed model in the V60 range,

with standard fit including voice control, leather upholstery, dualzone climate control, rear parking sensors and a seven-inch colour touchscreen infotainment display featuring the excellent Sensus satellite navigation with full European mapping and lifetime map updates. All the buttons and controls fall easily to hand and the infotainment system is easy enough to use, although it is a little clunky compared to the sophisticated, and button-free, iPad-sized touch screen that dominated the dash of the XC90 we reviewed last year. As technology and expectations move on, it’s little touches like this that remind you the Cross Country is an evolution of the now long-established V60 model lineup. Marina’s opinion The V60 Cross Country is a supremely well accomplished car which offers most of the benefits provided by larger SUVs with fewer of the drawbacks, but if you’re looking for a tow car, you might be better off sticking with those larger SUVs. If, however, you are a potential buyer who is used to driving large saloons or estates and in the market for something a bit more rugged and capable, then it’s difficult to argue against it – although Skoda’s Octavia Scout 4x4 offers everything the Volvo does, with a larger boot, for around £10,000 less than the equivalent V60 Cross Country.

yacht that is a firm favourite of EYOS Expeditions. Built for both tropical and polar waters, she carries two Mark-IV Zodiacs, which are used for landing on beaches, enabling you to explore penguin colonies, and visit research stations and historical sites. They also mean you are in the best position on the water to witness and photograph a humpback whale fluke. Below decks, my ensuite cabin was spacious and comfortable. The saloon was the perfect place to enjoy a warming coffee or shot of Baileys over the glacier ice that we collected from the sea on our adventures earlier that day. Chef Luis Galigo catered for all guests’ dietary requirements and preferences, providing an informal buffet breakfast, homemade soup and light lunches, freshly baked pastries and biscuits, and three-course dinners that any fine-dining restaurant would be proud to serve (which we washed down with a glass or two of refreshing Chablis!) Antarctica’s appeal to me was the opportunity to get up close to creatures that I had only previously  seen on the television. Having the Zodiacs at our

he pristine, icy seascape of the Antarctic might not be the first vision to come to mind when contemplating your next luxury cruise, but a charter into this remote wilderness is an adventure that should be on everyone’s bucket list. Around 30,000 people travel to Antarctica annually on cruise ships, but if you want to get up close and personal with the wildlife, to be able to tailor each day’s activities to your own taste, and to experience the genuine solitude of this vast icy horizon then a smaller charter is the only way to travel. Formed six years ago by experienced expedition leaders Rob MacCallum and Tim Soper, EYOS Expeditions specialises in luxury travel to wild, remote and culturally intact areas of the world, lead by skilled, knowledgeable and passionate expedition leaders. Antarctica is the most challenging cruising ground for any expedition yacht, but I travelled in complete comfort on the Hanse Explorer with a small group of guests. Ice-classed and built to handle the most challenging waters, the Explorer is a ‘go-anywhere’

Hanse Explorer At home in both tropical and polar waters, Hanse’s Explorer is built to handle the most challenging of waters. Her steel hull means she can drive through pack and brash ice with ease, making her a true expedition ‘go anywhere’ yacht. The seven spacious ensuite cabins can be configured to either twin or queen accommodation, and the large lounge and dining areas are the perfect places to catch up with fellow guests at the end of the day.

Ice breaking We travelled on at an apparently leisurely pace, drinking in the vistas of rugged yet delicate icebergs through Fridtjof Sound, Mikkelsen Harbour and Gerlache Strait. Overnight we covered 100 miles, blissfully unaware as we slept the deep sleep of exhausted adventurers. Again the Zodiacs come into their own when exploring the craggy coastline of Spert Island, enabling us to pass through an archway of cliff rock – a truly exhilarating experience.

disposal meant that the EYOS team could quickly respond to what nature threw at us, and our expedition leader’s knowledge and experience got us closer, quicker to some incredible spectacles. On our first day on this frozen continent we came close to killer whales, and spotted one lone king penguin surrounded by hundreds of chin strap penguins and fur seals. Adélie, gentoo, and chinstrap penguins all breed here, and we were fortunate to find many healthy colonies on our travels. As well as watching the chicks being fed, we also spotted a rare ‘blonde’ Adélie penguin. Each encounter was an incredible privilege, and our expedition leader Richard White was on hand to offer fascinating snippets of information. While penguins and seals dominate the land, the sky frequently fills with birds: Antarctic tern, kelp gull, brown skua, pale-faced sheathbill, Antarctic shag, snow petrel, Antarctic petrel and cape petrel all thrive in this seemingly inhospitable place. On various days from both the Hanse Explorer and up close from the Zodiacs we were fascinated to observe how different whale species behave. A pod of killer whales with a calf cut through the icy water, and I was surprised to see they were discoloured yellow by a build-up of algae on the skin. They would soon journey to the warm waters off the coast of South America and return as clean as a whistle after sloughing off their outer skin. We witnessed the breathtaking spectacle of humpback whales circling deep underwater rounding up krill, forcing them up to the surface where the whales rose up out of the water open-mouthed to feed. We also spotted a lone minke whale, long and slender, swimming alongside us as I enjoyed freshly ground coffee on the bridge.

the EYOS expedition leader

© Reeve Jolliffe © Reeve Jolliffe

So why EYOS? Well, that’s simple – for the best. And our expedition leader, Richard White, was exactly that. A polar naturalist and lecturer, Richard is one of the best in his field and can spot a crabeater seal from three miles away! An avid ornithologist, Richard is renowned for being an outstanding guide and, as I witnessed first-hand, has an uncanny knack for spotting wildlife. His knowledge of everything polar, from ice flows to whales, was astounding and no question was left unanswered. With a leader like Richard you learn more about the wildlife and the environment than you ever thought possible.

© Reeve Jolliffe

Richard is just one of EYOS’s team of highly experienced expedition leaders, whose role is to educate and enlighten as well as making you feel safe and secure in this alien environment. Because of the trust you have in your expedition leader you’ll do things you never thought possible – I never anticipated kayaking in the Ferguson Channel on our approach to Paradise Bay, or taking the plunge into the freezing Antarctic sea in Neko Harbour.

Out on the water I was colder than I have ever been, and thankful for my layers of technical clothing, but nothing warms the cockles more than the delicious rum-spiked hot chocolate we all gulped down when back on board the Hanse Explorer. As we continued through the Lemaire Channel, Grandidier Channel towards the Ukrainian Vernadsky Research Base, we watched our yacht cut through the ice with ease. Travelling in the Austral summer you avoid the worst of the polar weather, and although I was always safe and comfortable on board, it was reassuring to witness her deal with this harsh environment with such ease! Ensconced in the comforts below deck, it’s easy to forget that this is a working yacht, built to withstand whatever this extreme environment throws at her. From weather to wildlife, Antarctica is a land of extremes, a place that really does have to be seen to be believed. For me, this was a unique, awe-inspiring trip of a lifetime, and one that I would urge anyone and everyone to experience. Issue 12 |

n Good quality SLR cameras are no longer prohibitively expensive and are worth their weight in gold. Even a basic model will enable you to use different lenses for different subjects. If you’re going to invest, buy well in advance of your trip so that you have time to play around with it before you go.

n A long lens and quality zoom will enable you to get virtually close up to distant wildlife. n Remember to bring extra memory cards – you will take thousands of photographs! If you’d rather download and edit as you go, bring your laptop.

© Reeve Jolliffe

n The Antarctic landscapes are stunning and horizons vast – a super-wide lens will help you do justice to these breath-taking vistas.

n Carry spare batteries close to your body because the cold temperatures can sap battery power. n The Antarctic light is harsh, so a flash can help fill in any shadows. n Keeping your gear in either a dry bag or waterproof bag is essential – a simple ziplock plastic bag will do. Getting in and out of Zodiacs is easier with a small rucksack or specialised backpack.

Packing for the cold

© Reeve Jolliffe

© Reeve Jolliffe

To get the most out of your Antarctic adventure you need to be warm, dry and comfortable. The key to success here is layering – lots of thinner layers trap the heat more effectively than one or two thick ones. Your base layer will be next to your skin; think technical thermal underwear! To keep fresh for longer look for fabrics rich in naturally antibacterial merino wool. Flatlocked seams will go some way to preventing any annoying itches and tickles. Next up a fleece will lock in that warmth, and if it’s super-cold a down vest will add warmth without bulk, meaning that your arm movement won’t be restricted – essential if you need to be quick off the mark capturing wildlife on film. Top everything off with a well-insulated, windproof and waterproof outer layer. Technology has come a long way, and warm doesn’t have to mean bulky. My absolute best item of clothing on this trip was my Helly Hansen Sophie jacket (£220, hellyhansen.com), which kept me warm and dry even when we were out on deck wildlife spotting in the falling snow! Warm feet make a marked difference to your experience, so thermal hiking socks and sturdy boots are a must. I interchanged my hiking boots with fully waterproof muck boots when conditions dictated. Lastly, comfortable waterproof trousers were a real luxury, ensuring that I could stay out in the cold as long as I wanted – essential when all the action is taking place on the ice.

For the last two years, the Boat Haven has beaten off competition from 40 other marinas around the UK to be named as the UK Coastal Marina of the Year in the under 250-berth category. It was also awarded the UK Marina 2015 Sailing Today Award at the Southampton Boat Show. The marinas offer berths for vessels of all sizes – from jet skis and RIBs on VersaDock berths, through to 60m superyachts. With no tidal restrictions and easy access by road and rail, Poole is the perfect location for a short visit or a longer stay. Berths are also available on an annual basis. Poole Harbour is the second largest natural harbour in the world (Sydney takes first place!) and successfully manages a huge range of commercial and leisure activities – from cross channel ferries and cruise ships through to yacht racing, waterskiing, fishing, canoeing and personal watercraft. It’s also one of the most beautiful harbours in the UK and you could spend your whole holiday cruising around its waters. Brownsea Island, at the entrance to the harbour, is the birthplace of scouting and is now a heritage site belonging to the National Trust. Or why not take a scenic trip down the Wareham channel and make your way to Wareham Quay – an historic market town frequented by, among others, DH Lawrence. If you’d like to go a little further afield, Poole is the ideal location for visits along the Solent, the Isle of Wight, Studland and Swanage. The fascinating rock formations of the Jurassic Coast world heritage site are also within easy reach – Lulworth Cove, Durdle Door and Old Harry Rocks are all worth a visit.

Marina spotlight Back on land (and as its name suggests) Poole Quay Boat Haven has direct access to Poole Quay and the historic Old Town. Those staying at the Port of Poole Marina can take advantage of a free water taxi to the Quay, which is a great base to sit back in one of the many restaurants and bars and watch all the activity. There’s always something going on – including a spectacular weekly firework display. You’ll also find the world-famous Poole Pottery, where you can see the pottery being designed and created. You can even have a go at creating your own masterpiece. Due to their popularity and ideal location, if you’re thinking of visiting Poole Quay Boat Haven or Port of Poole Marina during the busy summer months, PHC strongly recommend that you book ahead to avoid disappointment. Poole Harbour Boat Show The third annual Poole Harbour Boat Show, in association with Sunseeker, takes place between 19-21 May 2017. Entry is free and hundreds of exhibitors will fill the Poole Quay Boat Haven and line the Quay to provide a showcase for sail and motorboats of all sizes, RIBs, chandlery products, clothing and water-sports accessories. The show, which attracts up to 20,000 visitors, is proud to have Sunseeker as its main sponsor. Other attractions already confirmed include five tall ships, three Royal Navy vessels and two Border Force vessels, all of which will be open for public view. Additionally, there will be a packed schedule of aquatic demonstrations and opportunities for the public to venture onto the water in different boats. There will also be demonstrations by the Royal Marines, live music on the Sunseeker stage, as well as theatrical events and firework displays. And this year, the boat show will be the basis for the family-fun element of the week-long Poole Maritime Festival which includes European Maritime Day – an internationally important conference when more than 1,000 maritime professionals from around the world will head to the town.

Largs Yacht Haven

Recently voted Marina of The Year 2017 by UK boat owners, Largs Yacht Haven is located in the sheltered and scenic waters of the Firth of Clyde

P

art of the multi-award winning Yacht Havens Group, Largs offers all the charm, warmth and personal service of a familyowned marina while delivering a wealth of valuable services. And, of course, the generous Scottish hospitality together with the most helpful and friendly staff provide the perfect base for every yachtsman. It is no wonder this was the first marina in Scotland to be awarded the marine industry’s highest award, UK Coastal Marina of The Year, voted for by UK boat owners. Largs Yacht Haven, on the Scottish west coast, certainly ticks all the boxes when it comes to facilities: over 700 pontoon berths for boats up to 33m LOA, a minimum depth throughout of -2.5m CD, and visitor berths to welcome the passing sailor. Alongside this are all the comfort and practical conveniences that Yacht Havens customers have come to expect as standard – 24 hour service for gas oil, petrol and gas; free showers and wi-fi; and unrivalled friendly and helpful customer service. Exploring afloat The sailing waters on the west of Scotland are renowned as some of the finest in the world, boasting majestic beauty, rugged scenery, incredible wildlife and tasty seafood, not to mention Scotland’s national drink, whisky. The Firth of Clyde has endless anchorages and harbours to explore, all sheltered by the Kintyre Peninsula. The islands of Arran, Bute and Cumbrae are all within a day’s sail of the marina and offer the visitor ‘Scotland in miniature’ – including castles, wildlife and coastal walks. The picturesque fishing harbours of Tarbert and Rothesay offer their own unique atmosphere, bars and shops. With a minimal tidal range and a huge variety of destinations you’ll be able to sail here whatever the weather. Most of these destinations have visitor moorings or landing pontoons with excellent seafood restaurants and characterful pubs – on Islay and Jura you can even frequent whisky distilleries. The Crinan Canal links the Clyde to the west coast and more open sailing. Alternatively, Northern Ireland is a good day’s sail away around the Mull of Kintyre.

Exploring ashore Largs Yacht Haven is conveniently connected to the busy seaside town of Largs by the Ayrshire Coastal Path, a pretty 20-minute walk bringing you to the shops and attractions of this famous resort. Why not try an ice cream at the renowned Nardini café on the seafront? If you prefer to peddle, there are bikes for hire at the Yacht Haven and a short ferry ride from Largs will get you to the Isle of Cumbrae, which only takes an hour to circumnavigate on two wheels. For something with a bit of culture, Kelburn Castle and Country Centre, the historic home of the Earls of Glasgow since the 12th Century, is located opposite the marina entrance. Within the marina complex, you’ll find the excellent Scotts Restaurant & Bar, the Bosun’s Table Coffee Shop as well as a range of specialist marine shops and services. You’ll also find the Scottish base for the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust. 58 |

marina spotlight Events at Largs Largs Yacht Haven boasts the only RYA Centre of Excellence in Scotland and, therefore, attracts national and international events. All facilities are contained on-site from three slipways; there’s berthing and fuelling for RIBs and committee boats as wells as dedicated motorhome parking and car parking for 1,000 cars. Largs hosted the Optimist Nationals last summer, and Largs Regatta Week is an annual occurrence. This week-long regatta is one of the few events to combine dinghy, keelboat and yacht racing around buoys and the islands. It also includes Scotland’s only two-handed race, with a prize of 100 guineas, plus a heady mix of ceilidh dancing, rock bands and social functions. Get connected Largs is well connected by road, air, rail and sea. The A737 and M8 link Largs to Glasgow, only 35 minutes away. Glasgow Airport and Prestwick airport are both within easy reach and a regular train service runs from Largs to Glasgow taking less than an hour. The Isle of Cumbrae provides a sheltered approach to the Yacht Haven. To approach the marina by sea, Largs Channel is free of hazards and accessible at all states of the tide. Navigation lights mark the port and starboard breakwaters guiding boats into the safe haven.

hether you’re inspired by that iconic scene in Casino Royale, where Daniel Craig as James Bond, resigns from MI6 and sails along the Grand Canal into Venice on a beautiful yacht, or if the idea of sipping a Bellini in Harry’s Bar – where the cocktail was invented and where Ernest Hemingway and Noel Coward were once regulars – Venezia Certosa Marina is a perfect base from which to explore the city. In an enviable location, just 10 minutes from St Mark’s Square, the marina offers an oasis of calm away from the lively heart of Venice. The 300-berth marina is on Certosa Island, a 24-hectare natural paradise that is also home to a boat yard, a hotel and restaurant serving traditional Venetian cuisine, and masses of beautiful parkland. Exploring Venice and its Lagoon in your own boat is an absolute joy; you can have your 007 moment on the Grand Canal (Venezia Certosa Marina can arrange temporary permits for yachts and tenders), and as the marina is located in the very centre of the Lagoon it is easy to visit the islands of Murano, Burano and Torcello, as well as the lesser known islands in the Northern lagoon. While berthed in the marina, your boat really is your own pied-à-terre in the city. The range of cultural events throughout the year adds to the charms of Venice. Highlights include the Festa della Sensa (27-28 May 2017), which celebrates the marriage of Venice with the sea with an impressive water parade and traditional ceremony followed by rowing regattas, the Vogalonga (4 June 2017), a rowing regatta that is open to everyone and has one of the largest numbers of participants in the world and the Redentore (15 July 2017) a day when all of Venice gets afloat, culminating in a spectacular firework display which lights up the spires and domes of the city. Getting into the heart of the city when you don’t want to sail is easy, it’s just 10 minutes away by public transport from Venezia Certosa Marina. The marina itself has hosted a range of artistic happenings and is the perfect base from which to visit the Venice Biennale (13th May–26 November 2017) and also the renowned Venice Film Festival (first week of September 2017). For those who enjoy racing, the marina hosted the second edition of the Dragons in

Venice Invitational in 2016, an event that looks set to return in 2017 on the last weekend in September, around the time of the Trieste’s Barcolana and Venice’s Veleziana. Being inside the lagoon, and less than one mile from the open sea, Venezia Certosa Marina is easy to access. Moorings are sheltered as all boats are protected by the surrounding islands and a 4m wide floating breakwater. Deep draft yachts can also be accommodated. Fresh water, power and WiFi are all available and there is 24-hour security on site. Berth holders also benefit from video surveillance and regular boat checks when they are away, giving them peace of mind. Shoreside facilities include indoor or outdoor dry storage, a bar and restaurant with a terrace overlooking well-kept gardens, chandlery, showers, laundry and dry cleaning facilities. The on site boatyard, where craftsmen build traditional Venetian boats, is also available for maintenance (anti-fouling, lifting etc.), refits and repairs. A sailing school, hotel and the possibility of kayak excursions into Venice mean that visitors and berth holders have everything they could need at the marina. If you’re looking for somewhere to berth for the season then a quick search for flights shows how well connected Venice is. With low-cost flights to Venice Marco Polo airport from across the UK, it is a perfect choice of base. There are plenty of opportunities to make the most of your boat; pop over for a short break to catch one of the city’s cultural events, or take a longer break to explore the area’s perfect cruising grounds. The lively Italian city of Trieste and the picturesque Croatian port of Rovinj are both around 50 nautical miles away, Split, Croatia’s second largest city, with its blend of ancient and modern, is 200 nautical miles away, and for onshore exploring, the Dolomite mountains are just two hours drive away, while Verona is only 100km away. As well as short and long term moorings, the marina also welcomes liveaboards. Berthing in Italy is surprisingly cost effective, an annual berth for 2017 at the Venezia Certosa Marina, just minutes from open sea, costs around €4,545 (inc tax) for a 12m monohull. Classic yachts and multihulls benefit from special moorings and generous terms.

Vilamoura Marina

With one of the best climates in Europe and near-perfect sailing conditions, the marina at Vilamoura is the ideal starting point in your discovery of southern Portugal

B

oasting more hours of sunshine per day than almost any other place in Europe (a light-filled average of 8.4 hours over the year) and part of the Algarve’s Golden Triangle – a triangle of resorts that comprise the region’s most affluent tourist areas – Vilamoura makes a great base for exploring the attractions of southern Portugal. The resort of Vilamoura grew around a small harbour and sandy beaches, with development commencing in earnest in the 1960s. The marina was first constructed in 1974, and has continued to develop since. Over the last four decades the marina has been recognised as one of the best in the world by its customers and, in 2017, it was awarded International Marina of Distinction 2015-17 by The Yacht Harbour Association (TYHA). Its adjoining beaches have been granted Blue Flag status, and the marina has also been recognised with a Five Anchor Award, and previously been voted Portugal’s best marina and International Marina of the Year. As these accolades indicate, the facilities and services on offer here are second to none. Vilamoura Marina has 825 berths for boats

In addition to a fully working shipyard, the marina offers comprehensive maintenance services and has a diverse range of companies on site, which can provide upholstery, awnings, cold technique, hull painting, general ship maintenance, brokerage, gel coating, electricity and housekeeping. The marina also provides 24-hour security, mariner services and free wifi access. During the year, several events occur in and around the Marina, including the Carnival regatta and boat show. Unrivalled setting The marina itself is home to an eclectic mix of over 100 restaurants and bars (including the Michelin-starred Willie’s), busy by day but bustling by night, as well as enough designer boutiques to satisfy your shopping needs. At the far corner of the marina, it is possible to charter boats for big game fishing. There are also facilities for jet skiing and parascending. Surrounding the marina are world-famous golf courses, beautiful beaches, a variety of sports clubs and casinos and night clubs. Scratch the surface, and this area is rich with history. The original Roman site of Cerro da Vila has been well preserved, and ruins include the baths in which the Roman fishermen would bathe. A short boat trip takes you to a series of caves around the coastline, and inland there are the typically Portuguese villages of Loulé and Alte, with their narrow cobbled streets and whitewashed houses. Loulé in particular is famous for its Saturday gypsy market and street carnivals. With this unique combination of incredible climate, natural setting and fabulous facilities, it’s easy to see why Vilamoura Marina continues to be so popular with tourists and sailors alike.

A

s an island nation we have a deep historical connection with the sea. No-one in the UK lives more than about 70 miles from the coast, but many people are oblivious to the open space off our coastline and unaware of the amazing native wildlife in our seas. Nature abounds above and below the waves. Our small corner of the North-East Atlantic hosts a third of the global population of grey seals, the most northerly population of bottlenose dolphin and, believe it or not, 23 species of whale, from humpback and sperm whale to the majestic orca. To the west of the country – from south of the Scillies and around Land’s End up to the Hebrides – you can marvel at the enormous silhouette of basking sharks. As they cruise close to your boat, they are hoovering up vast amounts of plankton through their gaping mouths. East-coast sailing can be equally spectacular. Seabirds such as skuas, gannets and auks (brightbilled puffins and razorbills) nest around North Sea coasts and islands. The Moray Firth is possibly the best area for finding bottlenose dolphins. As well as sharks and dolphins, it is perhaps more surprising to know that there are also turtles near our shores. Of the seven species of marine turtle in the world, five have been recorded in UK waters. The most commonly found in the UK is the leatherback turtle, which can survive in temperatures lower than 5°C. The largest specimen ever recorded anywhere in the world washed up dead in Harlech, North Wales in 1988, measuring 2.91m and weighing 916kg! Under the sea The reflective surface of the ocean hides a myriad of life just out of view – beneath the waves we have some of the finest marine habitats in Europe. Our seas are so productive that well over 7,000 species are known to jostle for space in every nook and cranny on the seabed around us, and among each cubic centimetre of water column. About The Marine Conservation Society The Marine Conservation Society (MCS) works to protect the UK’s seas, shores and wildlife. In it, on it, under it or by it – however you love the sea, by supporting MCS you can be part of the movement to save our seas. Together we can reduce marine litter, protect wildlife and habitats and encourage more people to only eat sustainable seafood – all actions that will help preserve our seas for future generations to enjoy. soft corals, brightly coloured seafans and sponges, shallow beds of delicate maerl, seagrass, flameshell and horsemussel – we really do have it all. Good boating practice If you want to get up close and personal with our local wildlife, sailing boats are probably the quietest, least obtrusive vessels for animal encounters. Playful dolphins and porpoises seem to genuinely enjoy riding the waves around the bow. But motorboats, RIBS and, frankly, any other craft – from a passenger ferry to a bulk freight carrier – can provide rewarding natural sights at any time. Whatever your choice of craft, there are ways of avoiding harm to wildlife, and making sure we don’t leave a legacy of grime in our wake. If you come across whales, dolphins, basking sharks or other large animals, follow the WiSe (‘Wildlife Safe’) Scheme recommendations… n Keep a steady speed of six knots or less when anywhere within a kilometre proximity of wildlife. n Don’t approach closer than 100m, nor chase or drive directly towards animals. If you’re lucky, you might find they approach you. n Take care when leaving the scene, making sure you know where each animal is before moving off. Find out more at wisescheme.org Eyesore on the seashore While too many fish are being taken out of our oceans thanks to over-fishing, far too much rubbish is being put in. Harbours and bays gather rubbish that’s discarded onshore and out to sea; it piles up on beaches and gets tangled between pontoons and harbour walls. As seagoers, it’s crucial we take every bit of our waste to land, whether it needs to be pumped out and paid for or simply dropped in a bin. Rules on sewage disposal are surprisingly lacking for smaller boats, but the responsible thing to do is to fit a holding system and dispose back in port. And there’s really no excuse to throw waste overboard, even in race conditions. When maintaining your yacht, it’s a good idea to keep free of algae and more persistent encrusting life off surfaces below the waterline. Most can be physically removed with a regular scrub, which is best done in the dry, preferably in enclosed facilities onshore. For anti fouls, try some of the new generation of boat hull coatings that contain few

The Good Fish Guide There’s nothing better than fish and shellfish for a hearty and healthy meal. But we’re in danger of exhausting the populations of some of our favourite edible fish. Common skate are now rare, and even the ubiquitous bass is on the decline. Ever wondered where the fish you eat comes from? Or whether you’re opting for sustainable species? The MCS Good Fish Guide (goodfishguide. org) is the definitive guide to sustainable seafood for all consumers who want to make a responsible choice, whether shopping at the supermarket fish counter or eating out in a top seafood restaurant. Available in print, online, and as an app for your mobile or tablet, it enables you to search by common fish name, delivering information about the sustainability of the various methods of capture and capture areas.

At home and on board, use cleaning products that are designed to be environmentally sensitive, avoiding chlorine and other bleaching liquids that are toxic to aquatic flora and fauna wildlife. This applies to everyday washing and cleaning tasks, as well as for seasonal maintenance jobs. If you’re interested in becoming a better boater, look out for our series over the coming issues of Marina. Boats Hand crafted in Norfolk, these wonderful pedal boats resonate with character and charm

B

ack in the 1950s, David Williams (the Dad of the title) built his first pedal boat – it was designed as a way of following his remote controlled yacht while keeping his hands free for the controls. The drive mechanism was an old hand drill and the ‘Sieve’, as she was affectionately called, was moth-balled in the garden not long after when he was called up for National Service. On his return two years later, the Sieve had deteriorated to such an extent that she was no use except for firewood. But the germ of an idea had already formed, and David’s next creation was a more sociable two-seater, with the ‘crew’ facing each other yet both being able to pedal in a forward direction. Over the next few years the ‘Cyclone’ was born, and accompanied David on his honeymoon around the Norfolk Broads in the 1960s and later around the Isle of Wight. In development ever since, David finally hit upon the perfect combination of stability and speed in the ‘Lifecycle’, which was first launched in 2002. In it, two people sit facing each other and are both able to pedal in a forward direction – the sophisticated gearbox assembly transmits power to the propshaft via the chain drives. The bottom of the boat is flat, giving excellent stability. The hull is GRP fitted with timber coaming, tiller and rubbing strakes, and stainless steel fixings are used throughout. Almost entirely handmade in Norfolk, the Lifecycle travels through the water at a good walking pace with very little effort from the crew. It’s good exercise, a quiet and sociable way to travel – find out more at dadsboats.com
