W

ith Spring most definitely here, the yachting year is now in full swing. Boatyards are a hive of activity, as everyone catches up on essential maintenance before hitting the ocean – if you want to get ahead of the game and carry out a few routine tasks yourself you’d do well to turn to page 46, where the experts at SeaJet talk you through the antifouling process. It’s not glamorous, but it is essential! Talking of glamour, step aboard Double Down (page 20) with our luxe lifestyle correspondent Dominique Afacan as she takes a break from the heat of the Miami Yacht Show to escape below decks on this gem of a superyacht. And we’re not done globe trotting at Miami – from developments at the Edinburgh Marina project (page 64) to Nobu’s latest opening in Marbella (page 74) and a spotlight on Puerto Escondido’s stunning marina (60), we’ve got plenty of inspiration for those of you itching to get away, including the exclusive Zanzibari resort of Essque Zalu (page 66). With its rich cultural heritage, breath-taking setting and gourmet cuisine, this is a place that really does deserve the ‘experience of a lifetime’ label. We’re also proud to announce Marina’s chosen charity for 2018 – Blue Marine Foundation, which works tirelessly to protect our oceans and the diverse life found in it so that we can continue to enjoy their bounty for many generations to come. On page 56 we explain how you can get involved with their latest fund-raising efforts, by challenging yourself on the London to Monaco charity cycle ride. Enjoy the issue!

A

game-changer superyacht toy, the innovative Foiler from Enata utlises cutting-edge hull design and groundbreaking hydro-foiling technology to travel at speeds of up to 40kts. Delivering a smooth and exhilarating ride for passengers, the FOILER offers a comfortable, high-performance driving experience for whoever is at the helm. Its retractable carbon fibre retractable hydrofoils deliver strength, rigidity and lightness, allowing the yacht to fly 1.5m above the water for the most exciting yachting experience imaginable, even while delivering up to 20% increased fuel efficiency at top hydro-foiling speeds.

MARINA PREVIEW The Foiler has a smooth and progressive take-off and landing, for the ultimate comfort of those on board. Virtually eliminating sea sickness while soaring over choppy waters, the unique design of the Foiler increases your speed while reducing the effects of drag on fuel consumption, enabling you to glide across waves of up to 2m, with little to no disruption to passenger experience and leaving up to three times less wake than a conventional yacht. For ease of maintenance, the retractable hydrofoils and propellers are lifted and positioned out of the water when not in use, which also reduces the yacht’s height for storage and is particularly convenient for stowage in superyacht garages.

SHADOW 800

Recently launched at Düsseldorf Boat show, the famous German automotive engineering company, Brabus, has joined forces with Axopar to produce the Brabus Shadow 800. Their proven leadership in luxury and performance car optimization for Mercedes has now been focused on producing an exciting limited edition of just 20 ‘hyper’ boats. Based upon the same underwater lines and versatile deck layout as the offshore capable Axopar 37 Sun Top, this is much more than just a mere styling exercise. The dark and striking appearance comes from an Alexseal premium topcoat paint system –one of the industry’s best and most expensive high-gloss paint systems. Every square inch of surface area, including dashboard fascia, flooring covering, and interiors have 12 |

been upgraded. The dashboard has a full carbon-fibre finish, for example, and the Sun Top has an electric Webasto sunroof fitted as standard. At the beating heart of every Brabus product is ultra high-performance so no wonder that the power comes from dual Mercury Verado® 400R supercharged racing engines, the BRABUS Shadow 800 offers classleading performance in every respect. Supplied exclusively with Mercury’s 360° Joystick Piloting, means that anyone at the helm will have the ability to dock safely in all conditions, with fingertip control. PEGAZUS

600

The new Pegazus 600 Top Fisher is shaking up the sports fisher market. From a distance, she may look a bit like most of the small production pilothouse style sports fishers, but when you get aboard things start to differ. In the large cockpit, the standard cushions are made in a modern silvertex style material and the two flip style seats on the cockpit sides are fixed in place with robust stainless steel fittings. Either side of the cockpit lazarette are 90L fish storage boxes with bilge pumps. Powered by a maximum 150hp, the Pegazus is a fast boat, capable of speeds in excess of 40knts. Edge-Water package their stock boats with a Suzuki 115hp but customers can choose their perfect power option

depending on how they will utilise the boat. Underway with a 115hp you can expect 30knts with a reasonable load, with the weight of the wheelhouse set quite far forward she is not nose light and feels steady and secure at sea. Pick the optional electric anchor windlass for easy anchoring and to remove the need to go forward at sea. Your standard mid-ship cleat will help you secure the boat when you come back into berth – you’ll most likely decide to be steering from the convenience of the cockpit. PRIVILEGE MARINE

CATAMARAN

Inspiration Marine Group, already a market leader distributing Hanse Group products in the UK, will shortly be announcing their appointment as agents for the Privilege range of Catamarans. The Privilege company was founded by Philippe Jeantot, twice world champion in single-handed sailing and founder of the famous Vendee Globe round-the-world race. When he designed his first cruising catamaran for his family to live aboard with comfort, strength and security the basic criteria, Philippe brought all his round-the-world navigation experience to the Privilege brand. He then went on to create further superb designs suitable for long distance cruises and live aboard comfort, combined with an exceptional performance.

When the Hanse Group were looking to add a Catamaran builder to their portfolio, Privilege were seen as a natural partner, sharing their vision of producing the best products in each of their market segments. Inspiration Marine will be releasing more information in the run up to their first UK presence at Southampton Boat Show in September, but in the meantime they can arrange viewing and sea trials of boats in France. TECHNOHULL

T688

At only 7m long, the T688 is the smallest RIB in Technohull’s range, but nevertheless the Greek yard has managed to incorporate the versatility, comfort and sportsmanship that decreed the success of their larger models. The multi-directional fibres ensure a solid platform for the standard ORCA Penel Flippo 1670 tubes. Thanks to its considerable load carrying capability and carefully studied ergonomics, the T688 is perfect both for fast and comfortable daily outings cruising and as duty as a superyacht tender. The centre console, which includes spacious locker volumes and an optional sportive and modern T-Top, allows for two lateral passageways that make it easy to move from bow to stern. The pilot and a guest have two wrap-around shock-absorbing seats, while a single seat is incorporated in the forward part of the console.

The large sunbathing area forward easily accommodates two, and a bow gangway makes it simple to go ashore and come aboard. At the stern the full-width settee seats three, and the special backrest design lets guests move conveniently to the bathing platforms that include a retractable swimming ladder. A quick change of anchorage is guaranteed by a ventilated deep-V hull shape that takes full advantage of the propulsion options offered by the yard. The owner can choose between a four-cycle outboard, from 150 to 200hp, or a two-cycle, from 150 to 250 hp. A top speed well over 50 knots confirms the Technohull T688’s sportive streak. The Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 490 is flagship of a new generation of Jeanneau yachts, her hull drawn by French Navel architect Philippe Briand has taken its inspiration from the latest offshore racing boats to produce as near perfect sailing experience as possible. The full chine hull and twin rudders provide exceptional stability and speed while the powerful sail plan is easily managed. The cockpit is a revolution and is unique in its class, the side decks are wide with full bulwark style moulded toe rails and the sloped side deck allows you to walk straight to and from the cockpit with no climbing over coamings, below decks interior designer Jean-Marc Piaton has given the new generation boats a completely new look and feel while remaining in the Jeanneau tradition of seaworthiness and function, he has 14 |

given us new central galley designs that provide excellent access under way. New wood finishes and textiles have been used to give super yacht styling and luxury . ASTON MARTIN AM37

The AM37 is the ultimate day boat and it was created to be completely customisable, so it is highly unlikely that any two boats will ever be the same. Handcrafted in the UK by Quintessence Yachts, the 37-foot powerboat – designed with Aston Martin – is made up of 3,500 unique parts. Combining the highest degree of technology and innovation, it perfectly merges design and engineering, with performance, comfort, luxury and functionality. The AM37 is available in two different versions: a ‘gran turismo’ leisure powerboat with a choice of twin 370 hp Mercury diesels or two 430 hp Mercury petrol engines, and a more ’Sport’ AM37S version with twin 520hp petrol engines by Mercury Racing, that can

achieve the maximum speed of 50 knots. The design and materials form a perfect synergy between marine and automotive. Navigation, control monitor and entertainment system are integrated in the dashboard touchscreen, with advanced functions to control the electric anchor, retractable carbon fibre bimini and retractable swim platform. Each of these day cruisers is manufactured using the latest in composite technologies and features many carbon fibre mouldings, including the upper deck. MARINA PREVIEW

umarine’s flagship, M/Y Marla – a 32.5-metre superyacht and unit #1 of the new 32XP Series – was recently delivered to her owner. M/Y Marla is a perfect example of a compact explorer yacht. While being just under the limit of 300 GT category, she is incredibly spacious. She accommodates up to 12 guests and is ready for long cruises thanks to her proven hull and ample storage facilities. The main deck of the 32XP offers a generous cockpit that also provides for a comfortable stern sunpad area right behind the couch seating. An expansive salon leads to a lobby area with a day heads and a separate gym on the starboard side, and then to a full-beam forward master cabin with more than 30 square metres of space and separate his and hers bathrooms sharing a very generous central shower. A fully functional kitchen with four full-height refrigerators links to the salon via a pantry area and to the crew quarters below, connected to the external portside passage with a crew-dedicated entrance, all to allow the highest standard of service on board and maximum guest privacy. Below decks, the layout offers two VIP cabins mid-ship and a pair of double cabins, all with ensuite bathrooms. On the upper deck, a truly phenomenal owner’s cabin with over 40 square metres of living space, including a large walk-in closet and generous owner’s bathroom, opens up via sliding doors to the incredibly large upper deck. Forward of the wheelhouse there is a large couch area with bimini and cocktail table and two extensive sunpad areas, while the flybridge offers 60 square metres of entertainment space that includes three couches, a 12-person dining table, two large sunpad areas, a fully-fitted bar, and three navigation seats around a secondary helm station. The yacht’s interior has been fully customised to include a multitude of luxurious materials, including various marbles, woods, leather, brass. The level of comfort on board is spectacular, and special attention has been paid to reduction of noise and vibration using modern technologies – even when Marla is running, the noise level on board does not exceed 45 decibels. numarine.com

T

he 30th edition of the Miami Yacht Show proved to be a scorcher this year, and those midday highs felt hotter than ever at Island Gardens Marina, where many of the show’s biggest boats had parked up for visitors to admire. After a morning spent exploring the sizzling docks, it was a welcome relief to climb on board the remarkable superyacht Double Down. The respite from the heat was not the only thing to impress, though. Far from it. This is a yacht with some superb stand-out features and bags of personality. SPACIOUS SUPERYACHT Built by Italian yard Codecasa in 2010, Double Down is a full displacement yacht with a steel hull and aluminium superstructure. At 65 metres in length, it’s one of the largest yachts ever built at the yard and more recently, it was given a makeover by its latest owner, ensuring it packs an even bigger punch. Along with some smart new interiors by London-based designer Evan K Marshall, who added elegant artworks and new fabrics – the boat got a full paint job, a new engine room and a new beach club – among other additions. At 65 metres, Double Down was always going to feel like a big yacht, but as we wandered through the vast state rooms, I got the sense that it was even bigger. Peter Thompson, of Thompson Westwood White Yachts, agrees. “Double Down is naturally a

spacious superyacht, however the interior volume gives her the feel of an even larger yacht, with nine staterooms, a great indoor/outdoor dining room and a dedicated cinema.” There is even an elevator on board – transporting guests between four of the five decks. I’m averse to cramped spaces, but on Double Down, we are talking about a large, glass-fronted lift that would be just as at home in a swanky landed residence. Much as I love the fancy elevator, however, my favourite feature is actually the engine room. I think this probably qualifies me as a superyacht geek, and I can’t quite believe I am admitting to such a thing when there is a private cinema, exceptional owner’s suite and multiple outdoor spaces to choose from, but I have never seen an engine room quite as immaculate as this. Thompson assures me I am not the only fan. “The yacht is fabulous throughout with so many great features but the biggest surprise is always when you step in off the bathing platform into an immaculately kept garage/beach club and then on through to the gleaming engine room,” he says. “There is even plenty of space to walk around and marvel at the machinery. It is exceptional and a testament to the level of care the owner takes of his yacht.” BUILT FOR ENTERTAINING I get the sense that the owner likes entertaining as much as he likes keeping his engine room shipshape. There are numerous social spaces on board, including a brilliant winter garden; a vast indoor/outdoor dining area with wraparound glass doors. I’ve never seen this sort of thing before on a superyacht – and I’m not surprised to hear that it’s used as a key dining area year-round. The enormous table out here is a real crowd-pleaser (at least it had the small group of us exploring the yacht in raptures) with two enormous Lazy Susans at each end, operated by a concealed button. Evenings on board Double Down tend to start and end in the well-stocked bar in the sumptuous main saloon

Dining is clearly a priority on Double Down. In the large galley, we meet award-winning chef Simon Phillips – a real gourmet catch for charter guests – and get a sense of the sorts of evenings that could be spent on board. A night at sea might start with an aperitif and canapés at the bar in the main saloon, then we’d take our pick of the various dining areas for some fabulous food. Later, any musically-inclined guests might fancy a tinkle of the Steinway grand piano at the entrance to the main saloon (rumour has it a number of world-famous musicians have done just that) – before retreating to one of the nine VIP cabins for bed. By day, there are all manner of toys to choose from to ensure maximum fun on the water, including a full-height inflatable slide. That’s in addition to the towed tender, Yamaha waverunners, aqua trampoline, paddleboards, kayaks and pretty much everything in between. The less energetic might prefer instead to relax in the Jacuzzi, indulge in a massage or soak up some rays on the sun deck. Me? Well, you’ll find me in the engine room.

The attention to detail elevates this incredible yacht to a league of its own, and care is taken to ensure that every inch shines!

e’ve all been there – what starts out as a lovely sunny day on the water turns foul under our unpredictable skies. One minute the weather’s warm with a stiff breeze, the next we’re beating a path into driving rain and the temperatures have dropped through the floor. It’s at times like these we come to rely on our choice of kit – and that lightweight waterproof suddenly starts to look like a poor decision.

APPROPRIATE KIT Before you rush out to buy a replacement jacket or full sailing suit you need to ask yourself a few very important questions, not least of which is: what kind of sailing do I really intend to be doing? If the likelihood is you’ll be headed far offshore or are planning adventurous ocean crossings, then the kit you need is going to be very technical and somewhat pricey, however if you’re more likely to be staying a little closer to shore the great news is you

can benefit from many of the features of a full-blown offshore suit at a more wallet-friendly level. Gill Marine have been a major player in the offshore scene for many years with their highly regarded OS1 and OS2 range of jackets, trousers and mid-layer garments, and for 2018 the OS family has expanded to include the new OS3 – a more cost-effective option that still packs a punch and includes many of the features that have made the OS1 and OS2 so popular.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR To stand any chance against the worst our climate can throw at us not only must a sailing jacket must be 100% waterproof, but it must also be able to withstand the rigours of use at sea. Most waterproof, breathable fabrics have been designed and developed for the larger outdoor clothing market and freshwater rain protection, but garments designed for marine use have to face both rain, salt water spray and waves. Salt water molecules have a larger surface area compared to rain water, and salt is also abrasive, so it’s understandable why most regular waterproof fabrics just don’t cut it at sea. For the OS3 range, Gill have utilised their excellent 2 DotTM, two-layer coated fabric developed specifically for marine environments. The jacket and trousers feature fully taped seams and a durable water repellent surface finish. To further protect you from the elements, the jacket features adjustable cuffs and integral PU inner seals to keep spray out of the sleeves. The main front zip is protected by tried and trusted double storm flaps with full Velcro closing – in short, the water stays out and you stay dry… Period. To ensure maximum visibility when things turn really foul, the OS3 jacket features a high-vis yellow hood which packs away into the high-cut storm collar and prismatic reflectors on both sleeves. The collar itself is the one feature that visually sets sailing jackets aside from the land-based brethren – cut very high the collar offers maximum levels of protection and tailored fit to ensure spray can’t make it inside the jacket – it’s also lined with soft fleece to prevent chaffing. As anyone who’s experienced it knows, dried salt spray on coarse fabrics can quickly rub skin raw. TESTING TIMES No product review would be complete without an actual test, and so Marina headed out in the very worst weather we could find to ensure the OS3 measured up. Wind, driving rain, sleet and eventually snow all presented as we put Gill’s latest jacket and trousers through their paces and we’re pleased to report that the outcome is very good indeed. The fit is just as a sailing jacket should be – cut loose enough to allow for layering, but not baggy, and with full, unrestricted movement of your arms, which is so vital when working around the boat. The trousers performed equally well – the fit is loose, unrestrictive and all-day comfortable, and the Velcro closures at the ankle ensure a great fit over boots, keeping the cold air from your lower legs. The high bibcut provides protection even with the jacket front undone, and adjustable braces keep everything where it’s supposed to be. VERDICT By taking what they’ve learned in the development of the OS1 and OS2 range, Gill have managed to produce something that belies it’s price point – the new OS3 jacket and trousers feel extremely well made, have all the features you need for most circumstances you’re ever likely to face, and proved hard-wearing in testing so you can be assured many years of faithful service.

The award-winning PowerWatch is the first device of its kind to be powered by the body itself, demonstrating the success of materials science pioneer Matrix’s proprietary thermoelectric energy converter. The PowerWatch runs off body heat so there is no need to recharge it. When the watch is taken off, the data is stored in memory and it goes to sleep; put it back on and the watch turns back on right where it was left (up to two years of idle mode). It’s got an always-on power meter that tells you how much electricity your body heat is producing, making it the most accurate measure of calories burned on the market. The rugged aircraft-grade aluminium wearable that wirelessly syncs with your smartphone, automatically adjusts to the current time zone, tracks your steps, calories and sleep, and is water resistant up to 50 metres. Even without the need to charge, the PowerWatch still offers the same capabilities of many battery-powered fitness wearables, without the hassle of chargers and cables.

Unlike typical passive kill cords, Lifecord is a ‘smart’ kill cord incorporating detection technology designed to trigger an audible and visual warning alarm should it be connected to the boat’s kill switch but not the pilot, similar to the seatbelt warning in your car. Lifecord’s uniquely designed Key and Clasp connector is comfortable to wear and can be operated easily even while wearing gloves. It also detects whether or not it’s being worn. Should it for any reason become inadvertently looped back on itself with the Clasp and Key connected but without being worn, if it’s connected to the vessel’s kill switch it will alarm.

TIDES: THE SCIENCE AND SPIRIT OF THE OCEAN

CREWSAVER ATACAMA PRO DRYSUIT

£18.99 Trinity University Press (hb)

RRP €559 crewsaver.com

Let expert mariner and marine conservationist Jonathan White take you on a journey of discovery around the globe to witness the largest, fastest, scariest and most amazing tides in the world, from China to the Arctic. White also demonstrates how, in this age of drastic global climate shifts, tides offer critical insight into the planet’s future. On the San Blas Islands off the coast of Panama, we see how the small island archipelago confronts sea level rise, and in Venice, Italy, how the city has been making extraordinary preparations for the coming effects of climate change. White also discusses ongoing research into the enormous opportunity to harness tidal energy in places like New England, Chile, Puget Sound, Scotland, and elsewhere. Tides (out on 5 June) combines lyrical prose, colourful adventure travel, and provocative scientific inquiry into the elemental, mysterious paradox that keeps our planet’s waters in constant motion.

With three-layers of breathable fabric and enhanced waterproof properties to keep you warm and dry while you’re out on the water, the Crewsaver Atacama Pro drysuit rivals its namesake desert as the driest place on Earth. The Glideskin neoprene wrist and neck seals, plus latex socks, further help to keep the water at bay; meaning your boating doesn’t have to end when the summer season does. It is designed to work with how the body moves, and incorporate articulated arms and legs for increased freedom of movement. In addition, the Atacama Pro has an integrated lower stretch mesh back panel with adjustable braces to create a bespoke customfit feel, without the price tag. Cordura reinforcement protects high-wear points such as the seat and knee; providing you with a drysuit that can keep pace with your demands.

TEVA ORIGINALLY AN OUTDOOR UTILITY SANDAL, TEVA HAS SINCE BECOME A BYWORD FOR SUPER STYLISH FOOTWEAR LOVED BY FASHION INSIDERS AND PRACTICAL TYPES ALIKE

B

ack in 1982, Mark Thatcher was working in the US as a rafting guide when he noticed a gap in the footwear market; his trainers became too heavy when wet to be comfortable, but flip flops slid off his feet too easily to be useful. His solution? To add a nylon ankle strap fashioned from a watch strap to his flip flops, creating the world’s first sports sandal! Perfect for summer sailors, city strollers and everyone in between, today’s Teva are available in a range of designs, colours and materials, but still embody that pioneer design spirit. All the Teva models are designed specifically to function really well in and around water. We particularly love the vibrant colour of the women’s Universal Premier (£55) – its water-ready polyester webbing upper is extremely durable and dries quickly after getting wet, and its non-marking soles make it ideal for hopping from ship to shore without sacrificing style. And because they’re Teva, once you’re ashore you can be sure that your feet will love whatever you throw at them, from hillside hikes to shopping safaris. teva.co.uk

RAISE THE ALARM

MANDATORY INSTALLATION OF CARBON MONOXIDE ALARMS ON ENCLOSED BOATS IN UK WATERWAYS WOULD SAVE LIVES; AS BOATCOSAFE LAUNCHES ITS CARBON MONOXIDE ALARMS CAMPAIGN, TBS BOATS ARE GIVING AWAY CO ALARMS FROM SAFELINCS WITH ALL BOATS SOLD

E

ach year boaters die or are made seriously ill from carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning – in recent years, 19 boaters have died and another 24 have needed hospital attention due to the effects of carbon monoxide. Boats are built to keep water out, but this also makes them good containers for gases and fumes, which is why campaigner Niki Molnar MBE has set up BoatCOSafe (boatcosafe. uk). Working with TBS Boats and Safelincs Ltd, BoatCOSafe is trying to change the law, so that every enclosed boat in UK waterways must have a working carbon monoxide detector installed. The BoatCOSafe campaign launched in March 2018 with a petition and news on its new website – boatcosafe.uk – along with an intense video highlighting the dangers. “Boats are naturally enclosed spaces where carbon monoxide can build up very quickly – and as you can’t smell or see it, you can be affected by it before you realise what has happened,” explains lead campaigner Niki Molnar MBE With people already booking boats for their summer holidays and planning cruises on their own vessels, BoatCOSafe is encouraging people to check that any boat they’re on has an installed and working CO alarm. Niki adds: “Alarms are so reasonably priced these days that there is no reason why every boat owner should not have a suitable CO alarm installed. Rented homes must legally have one, so why not smaller – more confined – boats?”

36 |

WORKING IN PARTNERSHIP BoatCOSafe is delighted to have the support of TBS Boats, which is celebrating 25 years of boat sales in 2018. In their three locations (Penton Hook Marina in Surrey, Bray Marina in Berkshire and the Hamble), TBS Boats are giving away Safelincs® carbon monoxide alarms with every new or used boat they sell. Dominic Smulders, Managing Director of TBS Boats Bray (tbsboats.com) explains: “We didn’t have a second thought about getting involved and supporting the BoatCOSafe campaign. There are too many reports of injuries and, sadly, deaths from this silent killer and I’m proud that TBS Boats are doing something to help by giving away a free CO alarm with all new and used boats we sell.” Safelincs Ltd is also supporting the campaign. They have been offering fire safety solutions to boat owners for over 15 years and offer a range of automatic fire extinguishers, as well a smoke and CO alarms that are suitable for use on boats. Harry Dewick-Eisele, Managing Director of Safelincs Ltd (safelincs.co.uk) is enthusiastic about the campaign: “As the UK’s largest online retailer of fire safety goods and services, Safelincs Ltd has always had a passion about raising awareness around carbon monoxide poisoning. We are very pleased to have partnered with TBS Boats in support of a national awareness campaign BoatCoSafe and hope to help reduce the number of CO related deaths on the waterways.” boatcosafe.uk

INTERNATIONAL CERTIFICATE OF COMPETENCE

WHEN YOU’RE BOATING IN EUROPE THE LAST THING YOU WANT IS TO GET CAUGHT IN A WRANGLE OVER WHETHER YOU’RE COMPETENT ENOUGH TO BE THERE. IF YOU WERE STOPPED AND ASKED FOR PROOF, COULD YOU PROVIDE IT? RACHEL ANDREWS, RYA CHIEF INSTRUCTOR, MOTOR CRUISING AND POWER, LOOKS AT THE ICC

T

he freedom to potter and to anchor or tie up anywhere that takes your fancy is one of powerboating’s great pleasures. Spotted somewhere you want to eat or jump in the water for a snorkel? Done. Seen there’s a river or harbour festival going on you would like to take in? Great, let’s go. But, depending where you’re heading, that freedom can sometimes come with a caveat. Different countries have different regulations and byelaws for drivers being able to show they are competent enough to be in those waters. If you want to drive, take your boat to or charter in Europe it’s generally useful, and in some cases essential, to carry the International Certificate for Operators of Pleasure Craft, more commonly known as the International Certificate of Competence or ICC. Issue 16 |

MAR16_RYA_ICC_ar.indd 37

| 37

28/03/2018 23:58

WHAT IS THE ICC? Evidence of competence – providing your boat is used as a ‘pleasure vessel’, is UK flagged and less than either 24m LOA or 80GT – isn’t mandatory in the UK. But when you venture further afield this can change and the ICC is the only international evidence of competence that exists for pleasure boaters visiting either the inland and/or coastal waters of Europe. The ICC was conceived under the United Nations

Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) Inland Transport Committee Working Party on Inland Water Transport to overcome navigation difficulties arising from the differing evidence of competence required for the countries through which the rivers Rhine and Danube pass. Since October 1998, it’s been Resolution 40 that determines how and to who an ICC may be issued, the syllabus requirements and the layout of the certificate. The RYA is authorised by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) to issue a UK ICC. WHO NEEDS AN ICC? When in the waters of another country you must comply with any competence requirements of that country (the Coastal State) as well as those of the country in which your boat is registered (the Flag State). Many European countries do require pleasure craft skippers to be able to evidence their competence. Although in reality this isn’t often checked, whether a country demands evidence of competency or not, carrying any certificates you do hold is never going to do any harm and an ICC is increasingly the certificate that will satisfy foreign officials if you are asked. Each country determines the ICC’s validity in its territorial waters. The requirements vary from country to country and in some countries change if you move from coastal to inland waters too. It is not just countries that have adopted

MARINA TECH

Resolution 40 that may ask a visitor for an ICC – Spain, Greece and Portugal being three examples. Very generally an ICC is recommended for the inland waterways of Europe and inland and coastal waters of Mediterranean countries. For the coastal waters of Northern Europe an ICC generally isn’t required. But there are exceptions. Therefore, and most importantly, it’s up to you to check the ICC is acceptable to the authorities in the country you’re visiting, and that no further evidence of competence is required by either the Flag or Coastal states. Although evidence of competence is reportedly seldom checked, not going armed with the right evidence of competence for the size and type of boat and where you’re going to use it could lead to difficulties if you are asked for it. The best advice? Don’t risk it. WHAT DO I NEED TO GET AN ICC? Are you 16 or over? Considered physically and mentally fit to operate a pleasure craft? And can you demonstrate your nationality or residency doesn’t preclude you from being issued with an ICC by the RYA? Congratulations – assuming you can satisfactorily demonstrate your competence to drive a boat – you can now apply. ICCs are categorised on two fronts – the type of waters, coastal or inland and the type of craft, sail (including auxiliary engine), power or personal watercraft.

Many RYA practical course completion certificates and RYA/MCA certificates of competence can be used to demonstrate competence in an ICC application. For applicants that don’t already hold an eligible RYA/MCA certificate, but do have the required level of competence, an ICC Assessment can be taken to demonstrate that. The ICC is valid for five years and is only issued for the categories in which competence has been proved. For coastal waters, RYA Powerboat Level 2 (if taken on coastal waters) and above and RYA Day / Coastal Skipper and above are recognised to obtain an ICC. For Powerboat Level 2 or higher course completion certificate the ICC’s validity is restricted to vessels up to 10m LOA. This restriction is removed if you hold either the Advanced Powerboat Certificate of Competence or any RYA Motor Cruising qualification. If you don’t hold any of these, you can arrange to take an ICC Assessment at an ICC Test Centre – either an RYA Training Centre or affiliated club authorised to carry out the assessment. The assessment includes an oral/written element, covering regulations, safety, navigation and pilotage, and a practical element. Skills to be demonstrated for this include leaving and returning to a pontoon, man overboard, 360° turn in confined space, securing to a buoy and planing speed manoeuvres (if applicable to the craft). For ICCs valid for inland, the RYA Inland Waterways Helmsman certificate can be used. Anyone wanting to venture inland will also need to take a CEVNI multiple choice test at an authorised test centre or online to validate the inland category on their ICC. CEVNI is the code which provides the basis of the rules governing navigation on the interconnected European inland waterways and the test checks knowledge of the rules and signs you’re expected to know and follow. Your nearest ICC and/or CEVNI test centre can be found at www.rya.org.uk/wheresmynearest In terms of demonstrating nationality or residency, the RYA is authorised to issue a UK ICC to a national of any country EXCEPT someone who is a national of another UNECE member state which has accepted Resolution 40 and is resident in another UNECE member state which has accepted Resolution 40, unless the RYA has been given written permission to do so by the Government of the relevant country. The latest list of UNECE countries that have adopted Resolution 40 can be found at www.rya.org.uk/go/icc-no HOW DO I APPLY FOR AN ICC? Application forms can be downloaded from the RYA website and the issue of the ICC is free for RYA members, including if you join at the same time you apply. For non-members it’s £45. A guaranteed two working day fast-track service is also available. When it comes to renewing, unless you want to add additional categories to your ICC, it’s simply a paper exercise. For more information about the ICC, including on acceptance, criteria, exemptions, assessments, applications and chartering abroad, can be found at www.rya.org.uk/go/icc

The initial launch features a stunning new Princess 75 Motor Yacht, Maltese-flagged and based at Port Adriano in Palma de Mallorca, just 30 minutes’ drive from the airport. She boasts eight berths in four luxurious en-suite cabins, and separate quarters for two or three crew. The YachtQuarters yacht manager will ensure that each owner enjoys a total of eight trouble-free weeks on board during the year: two in summer, four in spring and autumn, and two off-season. This ensures that everyone gets maximum value from their investment.

40 |

Outgoings such as servicing, maintenance, repairs and storage are predictable based on costs the previous year, and shared equally between all owners. You’ll be responsible only for your consumables such as food, drinks and fuel. The crew can replace your personal effects and ensure that your favourite food and drinks are on board prior to arrival, so you’ll feel at home as soon as you step aboard your yacht. YachtQuarters’ budgets include permanent crew for the Princess 75 and her toys (jet tender, water skis, banana boats, Seabobs and snorkelling gear), complete management and operation, as well as reserves for unexpected expenses. The total cost per week with YachtQuarters is approximately 65% of a corresponding charter. Your yacht will always be kept in superb condition thanks to the meticulous management of the crew and Princess Motor Yacht Sales’ after-care service, safeguarding your investment. Your yacht will always be in perfect condition on arrival, ready for a memorable experience in the perfect cruising area of the western Mediterranean. princessmysales.com

STRESS-FREE DOCKING THE MARINE INDUSTRY HAS TRADITIONALLY BEEN SLOW TO IMPLEMENT SAFETY AND COMFORT-ENHANCING TECHNOLOGY, BUT ONE OF THE MOST USEFUL AND UBIQUITOUS IS BOW AND STERN THRUSTERS

T

raditionally the preserve of the motor boat community, electric and hydraulic thrusters are now fitted to a growing number of new and used yachts and boats of all kinds. The discreet use of thrusters, with their increased reliability and significantly lower noise output, has meant that even sailing yacht owners see nothing wrong or ‘sissy’ about having thrusters installed. In fact, the sailing yacht market has been a significant growth area for thruster manufacturers in the past few years. Where a good bow or stern thruster system starts to provide pay-back is typically at the end of a long and tiring day out on the water. When it comes to the niggling prospect of having to park a boat that’s full of well intentioned friends and family in a crowded marina, at the end of a long day, it’s not uncommon for concentration levels to dwindle. Compound this with the fact that one, two (or more) alcoholic beverages may have been enjoyed underneath a day-long, energy-sapping sun, and the realistic chance of a skipper parking a large yacht – perhaps one with poor close-quarters handling mannerisms – in a cross-wind or strong flowing tide, without any form of drama, becomes smaller and smaller. No matter how many boat-handling courses you might have attended, a strong or fluke gust of wind on high-windage sides has the potential to cause thousands of pounds worth of damage at worst, and red flushing cheeks at best. Other instances where a bow or stern thruster come in handy is for short-handed situations, when wind and tide are doing all they can to make a fool out of your otherwise respectable boat-handling techniques.  Pulling-in a yacht like this is much easier with a thruster to help you

 A thruster can relieve tension on a taught line so it’s easier to untie

CONTROL AT YOUR FINGERTIPS Norwegian manufacturer, Sleipner Motor, has developed a Proportional Power Control (PPC) unit for their SidePower DC electric thrusters offering full finger-tip power control regulation by the user. The benefit this brings is that you can exercise as much or as little control over the thrusters(s) as you like, gradually feeding-in the power depending upon how much or how little you need. Previously, owners tended to fit thrusters that were largely under-powered, because in calm weather conditions during docking, having a more powerful thruster without speed control was akin to using a sledge hammer to crack a nut. They were also very noisy, and many people were put off using them within the quiet marina environment – arrive late at night and use your noisy thrusters to help you dock, and you would be scorned in the morning! Now, with Sleipner’s Side-Power Proportional Power Control system, owners can have a powerful thruster fitted for when they need it most, but the option to use less power for those situations when close-quarters conditions are generally more stable.

 The side-power hand-held remote control is easy to use

 The PJC211 single control with hold function

this system might actually allow them to enjoy their boating life significantly longer. With the hand-held Remote Control option, owners have even more freedom to walk up and down the dock, adjusting their thrusters at will, and if the wind is trying to blow the boat away from the dock, it’s a simple matter of a short burst of thruster to relieve inside pressure on the lines, therefore making it easier to untie the boat when it’s time to leave. The good news for existing thruster users is that retro-fitting the PPC power control system is more than possible for Sleipner customers, but much less-so for anyone owning an alternative brand. Upgrade kits include a temperature sensor for older versions and an S-Link compatible internal cable kit and signal cables allow for retro-installation of the PPC controller and PJC (Proportional Joystick Control) panel. So what have you got to lose? If you don’t have a system installed already, a thruster package will help take the stress out of difficult docking manoeuvres.

Here, the dual joystick control is fitted on a sailing yacht pedestal

DOCK SINGLE-HANDED An additional benefit is that heat generated by a DC electric motor thruster is much less if the power is moderated, therefore enabling continuous usage if the power required is 50% or less. This extended runtime feature can be put to good use with Side-Power’s Hold function, enabling the operator to safely pin the yacht against the dock and hold it there, while calmly walking ashore to adjust the mooring lines, and finally tie-up the boat single-handedly if necessary. The Hold function has the ability to extend your boating life when age limits physical ability, especially in stressful docking situations. So for people who can dock alongside, Issue 16 |

U

nless you actually enjoy dressing up like a Cyberman at the weekends, attending to your boat’s antifouling is a bit like visiting the dentist – it’s something most people would prefer to put off until absolutely necessary. But with the expert advice of the SeaJet team at your elbow, it needn’t be daunting any longer. Please note: this article refers to the application of traditional, self-polishing (eroding) and hard-antifoul types that can be brushed or rolled on. This article is not a definitive technical guide and must not be assumed as such. Use biocides safely and always read the label and product information before use. DRESS FOR THE OCCASION Most antifoul contains solvent and biocides; it is categorised as a pesticide and should be treated with the utmost respect. Full body coveralls, gloves, sturdy boots, a hat, facemask and protective eyewear should be worn as a minimum. If you are antifouling inside a shed, keep the main door wide open and consider wearing a cartridge-type respirator instead of the basic paper type. RIGHT TIME, RIGHT PLACE Preferably carry out antifouling outside, ideally in a boatyard or marina with a bunded catchment area to avoid jet-washings going back into the sea. Make sure bystanders and animals are kept

MARINA TECH away from your activity. Avoid public places (such as car parks) because you’ll have no control over members of the public, nor the ability to keep waste and debris suitably contained. Choose a day when the weather is calm – not too windy, not too hot or cold – because antifouling will be harder to apply in adverse conditions. If possible, apply during late morning or early afternoon and avoid surface moisture and overnight dew. Place a large sheet or tarpaulin under the hull to protect the ground and to gather up any loose scrapings after the job is done. Wet the surrounding area to prevent dust rising. PRODUCT COMPATIBILITY Check compatibility to ensure you can over-coat the existing antifoul already on your hull. If you know the make and type of existing coating already, then fine. If not, consider applying a barrier / sealer / primer coat such as SeaJet’s new 015 Underwater Primer: an acrylic resin primer which can be used to over-coat existing unknown antifouls, even Teflon based coatings. If you are still unsure then removal by mechanical means (bead blasting for example) or appropriate gelcoat-friendly strippers may be required. PRIMED AND READY TO GO Jet-wash the hull and remove all old surface fouling and stubborn shell growth then degrease using a suitable boat wash. In most cases, applying antifouling over an existing, uniform paint surface requires only minor preparation (wet sanding to remove small lumps and ‘blebs’ in the coating, followed by cleaning). Remove loose or flaking coating with a scraper and coarse 40 or 60 grit sanding paper and fresh-water. Round the edges of the scaper off beforehand to avoid gouging. Touch-up any obvious or bare patches by abrading and feathering-in with a primer or binder. Avoid hot-air strippers and drysanding as antifoul dust can be harmful. Widespread blistering or large swellings in gel coat or wood are a more serious matter, and should be dealt with by a professional. Depending on the age and condition of the hull, you can then decide whether to apply one or two full primer coats or not. Often only barestripped or brand new hulls require this. APPLYING ANTIFOUL Antifoul is best stored at room temperature. Once at the boat keep it stored in the boot of your car until you need it. If possible, warm the paint tin in hot water prior to application. Carefully apply a quality masking tape around the waterline, mask off anodes, shafts and fittings. Cover the tin with a large rag then open carefully to avoid pressure splashes. Stir thoroughly with a flat blade because heavy pigments can settle. Thinning should not normally be necessary. Put an appropriate amount into a roller tray and replace the lid. Stir occasionally during the work. Seajet recommend a medium pile mohair roller to avoid slipping across the hull. Apply the paint in a ‘criss-cross’ pattern as if you were using a brush. If you have access to a wet film thickness gauge, look to apply 200/240 microns in total which should leave a dry film thickness of

100/120 microns, roughly two coats’ worth. Apply extra coats by brush, if required, on the leading edges of the hull, keel, skeg, rudder and waterline where water flow is most prominent. Allow each coat to dry before applying the second and successive coats – drying time intervals vary depending upon product and ambient temperature. As soon as the last coat feels ‘tacky’, remove the masking tape to give a smooth waterline edge to the paint. CLEARING UP Collect all old scrapings in your tarpaulin and dispose of paint soiled clothing, used brushes, gloves, empty tins and such like at an approved waste disposal site. It might sound obvious, but one of the most common mistakes people make is to drive back home with potentially dangerous fumes being given off from dirty rags, paint brushes and half-used tins stored inside a car.

THE POWER OF

PASSION AFTER A 25 YEAR HIATUS, THE ITALIAN REAR-WHEEL-DRIVE SPORTS SALOON MAKES A DRAMATIC RETURN. WE TAKE AN ENTHUSIASTIC LOOK AT THE LONG-AWAITED ALFA ROMEO GIULIA

layout – yet in recent years even they have looked to follow the crowd, first with the 2-Series Active Tourer, then the X1 and soon-to-be-launched new 1-Series with frontwheel-drive too. From a packaging perspective it’s easy to understand why. Front-drive layouts increase cabin space and improve load space in the rear – important considerations for consumers looking at the market options. So to hear that Alfa Romeo was planning a new saloon – a replacement for the out-dated and not entirely successful 159 that was discontinued in 2011 – and that this new model would reintroduce a rear-drive platform to the brand, which had been front-wheel-drive only for the past quarter of a century, was enough to get the blood flowing for Marina’s resident Alfa enthusiast.

t’s been a long wait for me, and indeed all lovers of the Italian marque, but finally I’m sat behind the wheel of a car I’ve wanted to test since the first teasing mentions of it came out of Turin. It’s a brave brand that goes its own way in this corporate-driven facsimile market we now live in, but Alfa Romeo have long carved their own path – striving for a convergence between style and passion and placing emotional connection at the core of their design ethos. Any driving enthusiast knows that when it comes to pure enjoyment and connection with the road there’s only one set of wheels that should be propelling the car forward, and it’s not the front ones. BMW have long-championed the rear-wheel-drive

NEW CAR, FRESH COMPETITION Launching a new model into the ultra-competitive executive saloon market has to be considered a risky proposition. Even leaders from Germany are cautious when it comes to updates to their bread and butter exec models, such is the rivalry between BMW, Mercedes and Audi – each looking to cement position in the management carpark – so the new Giulia has a lot to measure up to. First impressions are very promising. In a market dominated by clinically excellent offerings, Alfa Romeo’s design flair stands out – the Giulia is achingly, unashamedly good looking.

A CLOSER LOOK While much of the excitement surrounding the launch of the new Giulia centred on the flagship Quadrifoglio – a 503bhp super-saloon taking the fight squarely to AMG and BMW’s M-division – it’s the regular models that need to impress if the Giulia is to be taken seriously. Back in the real world, the Giulia range is available with just two engines, a petrol 2.0-litre turbo offering 197bhp (or 280bhp in Veloce-spec), and a diesel 2.2-litre turbo producing either 148bhp or 178bhp depending on choice and spec. It’s the 178bhp diesel-powered Speciale sent down for review will likely make up the bulk of the sales, and while it may not be the most refined diesel in this class it does offer competitive fuel figures and a very useful 450nm of torque available from 1,750rpm coupled with a linear power delivery and an uncharacteristic willingness to rev, making it superbly tractable and more than a match for the equivalent German rivals, but also a bit more fun to use. All engines in the Giulia range come mated to an excellent eight-speed automatic transmission. “What no manual?” I hear you cry! Sadly not in right-hand-drive models. But don’t despair, the auto box really is good – the quick-shifting ratios feel well-matched to the diesel engine in our Speciale-spec and the optional steering column-mounted paddles are one of the nicest I’ve used. Coupled with the DNA engine mode selector, the auto is a genuinely viable choice for driving enthusiasts, particularly in Dynamic mode where the gearbox holds the revs for longer before changing up. And if you do want to drive in manual with the paddles, well that’s an option too. So on paper the Giulia promises much. Great engines; well-suited transmission; but does it have the dynamics to match it’s looks? Well, again the

news is good. The move to rear-wheel-drive certainly seems to have paid off. Coupled with a clever new front suspension design, the steering is pinpoint accurate and hyper-responsive – so much so that initially you might find you’re turning in too quickly. There’s precious little body roll and the fast steering loads up the tyres quickly offering superb levels of corner grip. Dynamically the Giulia feels every bit as balanced and sure footed as the class leader. SUPERB STYLING If there’s one thing Alfa know how to do really well it’s styling. While rivals might favour a more conservative approach, Alfa Romeos have always been statement cars and the new Giulia is no exception – muscular stance, swooping curves and perfect proportions all combine to produce an object that looks great from every angle. Somehow the Giulia simply makes the competition look just a little less special. Opening the doors continues the theme – from the swooping dash lines and elegant interior handles to the smell of the leather and the deeply luxurious and supportive sports seats, everything screams quality. Sitting behind the wheel, the iconic Alfa design cues are all present – deeply cowled clocks, the three circular dials for the climate control, everything falling easily to hand – it’s all so driver focussed. But taking centre stage, at least in our Speciale-spec, are the beautiful, huge, Ferrari-inspired, aluminium shift paddles mounted directly to the steering column. And another nod to the Prancing Horse – a steering-wheel-mounted starter button adding to the drama and emotional feeling you get when you climb inside. It’s what sets the Giulia apart from the competition. The quality of some of the interior materials might still fall short of the best in class, but it’s a huge step up from Alfas of old, and appropriately premium. The driving position is typical Italian – low and stretched – but even with the driver’s seat most of the way back, there’s ample legroom for rear passengers to feel comfortable in the sculpted rear seats. Boot space is a match for the 3-Series, offering 480 litres, but don’t expect an estate option any time soon – Alfa are putting those eggs into the new Stelvio SUV basket. It’s worth noting the Giulia scores 5-stars on the Euro NCAP crash tests and was awarded 98% for adult occupant safety – the highest achieved by any car tested.

MARINA’S OPINION As spacious, well equipped, good to drive and economical as its rivals, with better safety ratings and all packaged in a design that gets the pulse racing and puts the competition to shame, the Giulia is a fantastic return to form in the executive saloon market not seen from the Italian marque for many years. A genuine option for anyone considering an executive saloon with sporting pedigree And yet there still remains a belief that Alfa Romeos are all style and no substance; a legacy of less-than-great build quality from the past that has plagued the brand for so many years. Isn’t it time the world woke up?

ounded in 2016, between the marine charity Blue Marine Foundation and one of its long-standing supporters Winch Design, London to Monaco has become a well recognised, successful and hugely popular charity cycle ride raising over £570,000 for ocean conservation projects around the world. Over two years, the funds raised have supported a number of BLUE’s projects including the waters around Ascension Island, Aeolian Islands, Laamu Island in the Maldives and closer to home, in the Solent. IMPACT SO FAR… Due to the London to Monaco’s huge success BLUE has been able to achieve more than we ever thought possible. On Ascension we have been able to support a range of conservation initiatives carried out by the Ascension Island Conservation Department. We have provided equipment such as binoculars and microscopes for Ascension’s only school. The children wrote, saying: ‘thank you for showing us just how special Ascension really is.’ We have funded the turtle interns who spend months on the island ensuring that baby turtles survive in this major green turtle nesting site. And we have supported Ascension’s Conservation Department in many aspects of their work, from shark tagging to restoration of the trails on Green Mountain, to protecting endemic ferns. All this helps with our aim of establishing Ascension as a hub of conservation excellence in the middle of what could be the largest marine protected area in the Atlantic. In the Aeolian Islands BLUE is creating the largest marine protected area of its kind in Italy. Local fishermen have come together to agree to sustainable fishing methods and research teams are mapping the marine environment from shallow seagrass meadows to unexplored underwater volcanoes 1000 metres below the surface. BLUE has distributed information brochures throughout the archipelago and produced the first ever 360-degree underwater Aeolian film. Ghost nets are being removed and recycled, plastics collected and compressed, and thousands of reusable ‘More Fish – Less Plastic’ bags are replacing singleuse shopping bags. BLUE’s intervention has already improved the sustainability of these incredible volcanic islands. Once designated, the marine protected area will restore and protect the seas around them. In the Maldives BLUE is working to protect grouper, an important predatory coral reef fish, which is exported to Asia where it is highly valued for food. BLUE has been the first to verify and map grouper spawning aggregation sites in the Maldives. Identifying the locations of breeding grounds is the first step towards getting these sites protected. Thanks to BLUE’s extensive outreach programme, the grouper fishermen in the Maldives now recognise the need for fisheries management and want to protect grouper spawning aggregations. BLUE is currently in the process of writing management recommendations for the government. With the help of London to Monaco funding we will be able to develop management plans for these sites and funds will help support the implementation of new fisheries policies. Funding will also be used to develop new, larger scale initiatives for the Maldives following on from the success of the project. In the Solent we are making good progress with our

project to reintroduce millions of oysters into this busy waterway. Oysters were once abundant in the Solent, helping to keep the water clean and providing food and habitat for countless other species. Thanks to London to Monaco funding, we have been able to suspend more broodstock oysters in cages under marinas. An astonishing 90 different species have been found living in or around the cages. The school children who visit the project find it a fascinating day out and 130 local volunteers have been involved. Funding will also provide vital water analysis equipment for the project. This year’s ride, organised by Just Pedal, a leading cycle tour company, will run over seven days, departing from London with a celebrity send-off before carving its way through eight countries and celebrating with a champagne finish at the Prince’s Palace in Monaco. The funds raised from the 2018 ride will support BLUE’s projects in the South Atlantic including its continued work on Ascension Island, its development of a marine protection regime on St Helena and forming a network of marine protected areas in the Mediterranean.

 Great fun and a good cause: the London to Monaco bike ride raises vital funds for BLUE

SPOTLIGHT ON…

MDL’S OCEAN VILLAGE WITH FANTASTIC SAILING ALONGSIDE WONDERFUL SHOPS, DINING AND A BRAND NEW FIVE STAR HOTEL, MDL’S OCEAN VILLAGE MARINA IS A MINI MONACO ON THE SOUTH COAST

T

here’s never been a more exciting time to head down to Ocean Village Marina, one of MDL Marinas’ buzziest and most glamorous sites. The 375 berth marina, sheltered in Southampton Water, is flanked by shops, restaurants, bars and cinemas and within walking distance of the heart of the city. The big news at Ocean Village right now is the addition of the five star Harbour Hotel & Spa, which opened its doors at the end of 2017. A part of MDL’s £3.5million transformation of Ocean Village, the £50million, 85 bedroom complex, designed in the shape of a yacht, brings fine dining, a beautiful rooftop bar and a luxurious spa right to the water’s edge. MDL Marinas members can take advantage of the Harbour Hotels Platinum package which includes gym membership, VIP room service to your boat, discounts on food and drinks, room upgrades, complementary parking and many other perks. It’s not only the lifestyle aspects of Ocean Village that are on the up. Modernisation and extension work on the pontoon berths continues apace, with improvement due for completion at the end of the year. The state of the art pontoons will accommodate much larger yachts befitting Ocean Village’s growing status as a prestige marina, and create easier access for all boat owners. It’s a logical next step for Ocean Village. The marina sits in a deep basin formerly used for commercial shipping so is perfectly placed to offer mooring facilities for the increasing number of large yachts attracted to the area, not to mention beautiful tall ships. Ocean Village is famous for hosting the start or finish of round the world yacht races and is home to Royal Southampton Yacht Club, one of the country’s oldest clubs. The warm and friendly RSYC offers MDL Marinas’ members and their visitors use of their clubhouse, which has a lively, fun-packed schedule with live music evenings and plenty of opportunities to talk to fellow sailing enthusiasts. Most importantly, of course, there are superb and varied cruising opportunities from the marina. Head out into the Solent Waters, taking in the Isle of Wight, or enjoy days out on the rivers Hamble and Itchen.

A few miles to the east is Portsmouth Harbour, home to a large fleet of modern and historic warships. The star attraction is of course the 16th Century Mary Rose, raised from the Solent in 1982, painstakingly preserved and housed in a purpose-built museum along with an impressive collection of artefacts. There’s far more besides – Nelson’s flagship the HMS Victory and the Victorian HMS Warrior for starters. xplorers, adventurers and travel enthusiasts have raved about Puerto Escondido since the 1400s. Author John Steinbeck called the area “a place of magic,” while environmental pioneer Jacques Cousteau coined the surrounding Sea of Cortez “the aquarium of the world”. Puerto Escondido is protected within the Bay of Loreto National Park; UNESCO recognises this area as a World Heritage Site. Marina Puerto Escondido is just 15 miles from Loreto, a tranquil seaside town along the southeast coast of Baja California, Mexico. The marina is a quiet and visually stunning alternative to the crowded Baja tourist areas. And, in addition to miles of striking coastline and rugged desert landscapes, the local 3,000 ft., colour-changing Cerro Tabor Palmilla Peaks are truly iconic; the peaks also offer navigation landmarks and protection against strong winds. As far as safety goes, the marina is hard to beat. It nestles within an almost 360-degree land shield that protects visitors and residents against hurricanes. Plus, the marina offers 24/7 security camera surveillance within the Puerto Escondido Bay, along with around-the-clock patrol service

MARINA SPOTLIGHT for the dry storage, slips, and yachts moored in the bay and at home construction sites. Currently, travellers and residents with a taste for luxury make the marina their sanctuary. Marina Puerto Escondido is known for its world-class fishing, in addition to boat tours, kayaking, paddleboarding, snorkelling, scuba diving, whale watching, sailing, hunting, hiking, mountain biking, motor sports, and golf. For decades, deep-sea fishing enthusiasts from the Southwest have escaped to Marina Puerto Escondido. The Sea of Cortez is home to more than 875 species of fish, including a large, stable number of game fish. The marina partners with Outpost Charters, so that clients can enjoy memorable and expertly-led fishing expeditions. Visitors can charter a catamaran through Marina Puerto Escondido’s proud partner, West Coast Multihulls, with both captain/crewed and bareboat options. West Coast Multihulls offers the gorgeous and spacious Fountaine Pajot SABA 50 (sleeps 12) for charter, as well as a small fleet of other luxury catamarans. West Coast Multihulls provides sailing lessons for every level of expertise, from the casual vacationer to serious sailor alike. In 2016, Hamann Companies and Inmobiliaria JEP joined forces to own and manage the marina and surrounding real estate. Under its recent joint ownership, the marina has been completely revamped. Innovations to the marina community include 150 state-of-the-art slips, a new breakwater to protect against strong northern winds, a wide range of amenities and services—plus, the development of a luxury seafront community, Waicuri at Marina Puerto Escondido. Waicuri derives its name from a local historic indigenous tribe who made Puerto Escondido home centuries ago. The marina owners are dedicated to honouring local people and culture; paying tribute to this tribe is just one example of this. Dredging at the marina entrance channel has enabled safe entry for boats of all sizes; dredging efforts have created depths of 15 feet at low tide. In fact, Marina Puerto Escondido welcomed its largest yacht to date in January, at 150 feet in length. Not only is traveling in the marina more convenient than ever before – but it’s also easy to travel to the marina. There are several direct flights between the Loreto International Airport and La Paz (Calafia Airlines), Tijuana (Calafia Airlines), Los Angeles (Alaska Airlines), Calgary (Westjet), and Cabo San Lucas (Calafia Airlines-coming April 8th, 2018). The Cross Border Xpress in San Diego enables passengers to walk directly to the Tijuana Airport. As for shoreside dining and entertainment, visitors and residents enjoy Pepegina’s Pizza for hearty, Mexican/American fusion fare. Patrons can relax in a family-friendly local hotspot featuring live music, special events, and highly-rated service. To unwind after a long day of outdoor activities, marina guests can lounge at our rooftop pool with food and beverage service available daily, plus a roomy jacuzzi and a shaded terrace. Within half an hour from Marina Puerto Escondido are dozens of hotels and eateries, including La Mision Hotel, Villa Del Palmar Resort and Golf Course, and Mi Loreto Restaurant. History lovers can drive an hour to the west of the marina and see the historic San Javier Mision, while savouring idyllic views of the Bay of Loreto National Park Islands. The owners and staff at Marina Puerto Escondido strive to make local adventures as accessible as possible. The marina’s English-speaking Guest Services Team graciously handles slip reservations, repairs and virtually all other needs that may arise during clients’ stay. To complement excellent service are equally excellent amenities, including a launching ramp and 50-ton travel lift, high-speed WiFi, concierge grocery shopping – and more..

ust 2.5miles northwest of central Edinburgh and 8 miles from the city’s international airport, Edinburgh Marina will be a unique new destination for Scotland’s capital city, bringing new life and vibrancy to a key area of Edinburgh’s coastline. With detailed planning consent now granted, and construction scheduled for the latter half of this year, it is anticipated that the Marina will enable Scotland’s capital to compete with the more established west coast sailing destinations for part of Scotland’s £3.7bn marine tourism industry; creating unique new world-class facilities to help expand the size of Scotland’s overall market. The wider vision for the Edinburgh Marina Development represents a truly unique opportunity for both Edinburgh and Scotland, to create a cross-generational lifestyle hub which combines state of the art facilities and a wide variety of housing tenures located in a unique and vibrant new waterside district a stone’s throw from Edinburgh city centre. Camper & Nicholsons Marinas, the internationally renowned marina owners and operators, will design, commission, manage and operate the new Edinburgh Marina, the centrepiece of the unique £500 million waterside quarter development close to Edinburgh city centre and gateway to exploring Scotland’s renowned cruising area.

The new Edinburgh Marina has been designed to surpass the 5 Gold Anchors rating of the Yacht Harbour Association, creating a ground-breaking new destination for the global boating fraternity. It will offer 317 full-serviced berths, with visitor berths and additional dry berths for boats up to 30m in length. Edinburgh Marina will offer 24/7 access to the sea, on-demand, on-board food and drink along with concierge service. Marine services and an extensive chandlery will be located in the stunning new marina office sited within the fully equipped new boatyard. The marina has been designed to accommodate the full-size range of yachts and cruisers, including some of the largest of the world’s superyachts – the first time this has been possible on Scotland’s east coast – and is expected to attract boat owners and enthusiasts from around the world. Kevin Fawcett, the developer, commented: “The new worldclass Edinburgh Marina at Granton’s Western Harbour is the most important new marina development in the UK for several decades. It harks back to a long and distinguished international maritime connection that Edinburgh and Granton Harbour once enjoyed, will help to re-establish Edinburgh’s maritime economy as well as creating a vibrant new city destination that will enhance Edinburgh’s reputation as one of the UK’s most attractive lifestyle destinations.”.

lthough I arrived in the resort of Essque Zalu at three in the morning after an overnight flight, I immediately understood why its creators had felt the need to coin their very own phrase – Essque – to describe that feeling of sheer amazement that everyone experiences when they see the place for the first time. The 40-metre high

thatched roof (the tallest in Zanzibar) encloses two restaurants, an art studio and bar and emphasises the scale of this huge space but at the same time makes it feel invitingly cool. It’s simply breathtaking. Comprising just 40 suites and eight villas, Essque Zalu has an intimate atmosphere, and all the accommodation offers views of either the lush tropical

Whether you’re in a suite or a villa, there’s plenty of living space, with a scattering of traditional artwork and the pitched makuti roofs creating the resort’s unique character. Within this boutique resort there are plenty of places to find your own space in which to relax and enjoy the scenery. My favourite spot by far was in the middle of

To the left is the pool bar and the ever-smiling Khamis, always ready and waiting to make you a cocktail (mine was a frozen margarita, simply the best I’ve ever tasted); to the right is the seat where, at 6am that morning, I had watched the most breath-taking sunrise that I have ever set eyes on. The infinity pool looks out onto the jetty, which is home to the fabulous Jetty restaurant and bar, where days drift by as you relax with a cocktail, dreamily watching the dhows bob on the turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean. One evening during my stay, after feasting on local fish – landed that morning and served hot from the BBQ or crafted into meltingly tender sushi by the skilled chef under our very noses – I sang and danced with the live band until my feet ached. THE MAASAI RITUAL Thankfully, the next day I was treated to the full Essque spa experience – The Maasai Ritual, billed as a twohour ceremony of bodily and sensory pampering. I arrived in the grounds of the spa, which can only be described as looking like a miniature Maasai village, just before sundown when the temperature was starting to drop to a comfortable level. My ritual began with four Maasai villagers chanting and dancing while I was lead into the first of the traditional tents; my feet were treated to a fresh coconut and sand scrub, followed by a light foot massage with fresh lime, coconut and lime essential oil. With my feet refreshed and recovered from the previous evening’s dancing, I took a short wander to the next tent, where I was slathered in a traditional Singo body scrub. Usually administered to young woman before their wedding day, it uses local ingredients including moringa leaves, cinnamon powder, ylang ylang and raw sugar, which are blended with rosewater in a ‘kinu’ traditional blender. I washed away all traces of the scrub under a private outdoor shower with a view of the stars – a magical experience, which left my skin soft and silky. On to the next tent and a 45-minute aromatherapy massage using coconut, citronella, cinnamon and orange essential oils. It was so relaxing that, I have to confess, I fell asleep for the whole thing! I blame the jet lag… The last tent is the

When it’s hot (and it’s always hot!) the Baobab Bar is the best place to be: cool down with a refreshing fruit shake or frozen cocktail – let your mixologist create something specially for you.

to prepare mouth-watering traditional dishes and sample the best that this ‘Spice Island’ has to offer. It was a real privilege to be taught by Rose. After picking fresh herbs and vegetables in the kitchen garden, which overflowed with sage, basil, mint, coriander and thyme, Chef Rose – a gifted and eternally patient teacher – guided me through the creation of a three-course meal, peppering it with practical tips, advice, insights into ingredients and stories about her treasured family recipes, which have been passed down from generation to generation.

The rich culinary heritage and history of Zanzibar combines Swahili, Persian, Portuguese, Arab and Indian influences, and its cuisine, which prominently features locally caught fish and seafood, introduces guests to a heady mix of fragrant cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon, green and black pepper and vanilla as well as an exotic tropical array of fruits and vegetables, from gleaming chillies, aubergines and tomatoes, to okra, lychees, star fruit and baobabs to name a few. The studio has five cooking stations centred around communal learning, meaning those with a competitive edge can even challenge friends and family,

MasterChef style! Tantalising dishes on the menu include pweza wa nazi, an octopus curry prepared with fresh coconut; authentic lamb samosas (which I mastered, even if I say so myself); chicken biryani; and pan-fried fish with coconut sambal. Afterwards guests are rewarded with a seat at the Mosha Cookery Studio dining table to taste the fruits of their labour, paired with wines expertly chosen by the sommelier. Perfect for individual foodies or groups travelling together, the school caters for amateurs, enthusiasts and accomplished cooks alike. young gastronomes from the age of four and up. CULTURAL LEGACY While in Zanzibar, I took time to visit a few of the tourist hot spots. In Zanzibar City I spent time in the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Stonetown (Mji Mkongwe in Swahili), visiting the former slave market site, walking to the house where Freddy Mercury was born, and wandering through the markets and maze of narrow alleys. I also took a tour of a local spice farm and came home laden with all manner of wonderful spices, which I quickly presented to my husband (he’s the real

chef in the Beaufoy house). Wildlife lovers will enjoy visiting the red colobus monkeys in Jozani forest, or the 180-year-old tortoises on Prison Island. Life underwater is pretty rich too, so why not take a boat out and explore the sealife or create your own bespoke ‘surf and turf’ by combining your trip with a safari. Whether you choose this as a stop off to break up a longer trip or simply want to relax and indulge yourself for week or so and stock up your spice rack, Essque Zalu is the perfect destination for young or old, made extra special by the kindness, charm and efficiency of the excellent staff.

Signature dishes include Mahi Mahi, braised lamb shoulder and succulent Cape Grim sirloin. An extensive drinks list delights diners and is the work of French native and Cantaloupe Hotels Group F&B Manager, Mathieu Delin, who drew on his experiences in London and Dubai to create an outstanding cocktail menu. “It’s a match made in heaven,” said Cantaloupe Hotels Group’s Founder and CEO, Dimitri Jayasuriya. “As a hospitality group, we have always believed in offering stylish and innovative cuisine and who better to partner with to cater to the huge demand here than one of the hottest chefs in Asia.”

ince launching in 2013, Cream Cornwall have been constantly updating their blue and white china range. “When the collection was first launched we only had six designs and enough money to get six dinner plates and six mugs made” says Allison, co founder. Business partner, Rebecca, goes on to explain, “We were so excited to see them that we put them in the window of Allison’s house, where people stopped to look and we could hear all their lovely comments, which really encouraged us and confirmed that our products were what people wanted to have in their homes”. With backgrounds in textiles and design, Rebecca and Allison draw on a combined 45 years’ experience creating unique designs centred on craftsmanship. All the designs are first drawn in pen and ink, before the china pieces are hand decorated in Stoke on Trent. The range now includes a comprehensive selection of ceramics and tableware, as well as textiles, soft furnishings and lighting. YOS Expeditions, the world’s leader in private superyacht expeditions, is marking its tenth anniversary by introducing yet another world’s first travel experience. Beginning in 2019, EYOS will offer a limited number of scheduled departures where travellers will be able to book an individual cabin rather than chartering a full yacht. The first of these experiences is a one-week Antarctic expedition on board the 77m-yacht Legend from 6-13 January. “We are creating an experience that was, up until now, available only to private yacht owners or those

who chartered an entire yacht. We firmly believe the smaller the number of guests on an expedition, the better the experience, and with a private yacht sized group, the experience will be intimate and bespoke. Guests can linger on shore with charismatic penguins, jump into a Zodiac at a moment’s notice when a pod of whales surface nearby, or choose to head ashore later in the day after a morning massage. The experience will be theirs to define,” says CEO Ben Lyons. EYOS pioneered fly in/fly out superyacht expeditions to Antarctica, and guests on this expedition will enjoy

With seven full days on the Peninsula, guests will have ample time to explore and experience the Antarctic while still limiting time away from home. Owner Jan Verkerk of Legend says, “We look forward to working exclusively with EYOS to develop this new expedition experience. There is simply nothing like it on the market now, and the combination of this uniquely capable yacht and their experienced expedition guides is unsurpassed.” Prices for the one-week departure in January begin

at €25,000 per person, and include pre and post hotel nights in Punta Arenas, flights between Punta Arenas and Antarctica, and all drinks and activities on board. Guests will benefit from the expertise in photography and the natural history of Antarctica of the three EYOS guides on board. Reservations will open on 26 March, but interested guests can be put on a wait list now by emailing legend@eyos.com Later this year, EYOS will introduce other scheduled expeditions on board superyachts in the South Pacific and the Maldives, as well as future polar expeditions on board Legend.

HANSE 415

This 2017 model Hanse 415 has a no-expenses-spared specification and has been very lightly used for her one and only season on the water. As close to ‘as new’ as they get, she is ready to go for the 2018 season. One of the most popular sizes in the range, the Hanse 415 is perfectly balanced in all conditions and is known for being a strong, seaworthy and stable yacht that can be sailed safely and with confidence in changing and challenging conditions. As the helmsman can operate the sheets, halyards and reefing lines with ease from the helm, stress-free handling means you will

have more fun on the water – you can sail the Hanse 415 singlehanded if you wish. The twin steering positions make for a spacious, ergonomic cockpit suitable for entertainment and crew comfort as much as for sailing and the deck of the 415 is conveniently free of all running rigging and obstructions, allowing you plenty of space to relax and enjoy the beautiful surroundings of your favourite anchorage. aiden, the yacht that made history with the first allfemale crew to sail the Whitbread Round the World Race in 1990, has a new skipper who will take her on The Maiden Factor: a three-year round-the-world tour in support of, promoting and raising money for girls’ education worldwide. Currently 130 million girls are denied an education and if all girls had 12 years of education, child marriage would fall by 64%, early births would fall by 59% and child deaths under five years would fall by 49% (source: UN Women 2015). The project will continue the legacy of Maiden’s creators and supporters to promote, lobby and fundraise for better access to education for girls. Maiden is currently being restored before she embarks on a global awareness and fundraising tour. The Maiden Factor will use funds raised to support charities that are working to empower, teach or mentor girls and that promote, facilitate, lobby for or provide solutions which enable the education of girls not currently afforded that basic human right. Tracy Edwards MBE, the first woman in 32 years to win the Yachtsman of the Year Award in 1989 for her record-breaking successes with Maiden, will hand over the skipper role to Susan Glenny, a professional yachtswoman, transatlantic race skipper and director of Tigress Sport who, at the age of 13, was inspired by Tracy’s achievements in the Whitbread to pursue a career in sailing. Following a sailing holiday in Athens, Susan developed her sailing qualifications and after a few years in the corporate world

started a female race team ‘The Sirens’ and went on to lead team @ The SirensRacing that opens up competitive yacht racing to less experienced sailors. She is a commercial Ocean Yachtmaster and has skippered three transatlantic races; four Fastnet races and two Caribbean 600s, as well as many inshore regattas all over the world. Announcing Susan’s new role on Maiden, Tracy said, “I am delighted to be passing on the role of Skipper to Susan, I know that Maiden will be in safe hands. Susan was inspired by Maiden to believe she could reach her dream and now, in charge of Maiden, she will be inspiring others with The Maiden Factor’s goal to unlock the potential of millions of girls worldwide through education.” This will be Susan’s first circumnavigation and talking about her new role on Maiden she said, “I cannot think of a more poignant and legendary boat to take the skipper role on; to take over this responsibility from Tracy, who was incredibly inspirational to me when I was a youngster, really proves that anything is possible.” With Susan on-board as Maiden new skipper, the search for the permanent female crew members has started. Over the next few months, Tracy will also be working with The Magenta Project (themagentaproject.org) – a collective of passionate sailors committed to creating equal access and opportunities for women in sailing – to source female sailors for crew places over Maiden’s three-year world tour. All interested sailors can send an application letter together with a CV to info@themaidenfactor.org.

THE NEW SKIPPER HAS BEEN REVEALED FOR THE ICONIC YACHT MAIDEN’S NEXT VOYAGE: A THREEYEAR ROUND-THE-WORLD TOUR TO PROMOTE AND FUNDRAISE FOR GIRLS’ EDUCATION… NOW THE WORLDWIDE SEARCH FOR PERMANENT CREW TO JOIN THE NEW SKIPPER BEGINS 98 |
