G N I M O C SOON

I

nvariably, new motorboats entering the UK market are much of a muchness: similar lines, hull shape and performance. Now and again, however, a boat arrives that makes you do a double take, and this was the effect Sasga Yachts had on Edge-Water Marine Ltd when they were introduced to the brand by the designer Inigo Toledo back in 2015. Sasga Yachts are manufactured on Menorca, the smallest of the Balearic Islands, which has a rich history manufacturing small double-ended llaüt yachts used primarily for fishing. The adventure began for Sasga in 1978 when Juan Sastre Bernat began the production of such a yacht, which over the decades transformed into a stylish category A, go-anywhere, semi-displacement motorboat range consisting of a 34ft, 42ft, 54ft and new 68ft. The new range, now under the direction of Juan Sastre Bernat’s son Jose Luis Sastre Gardes, is offered as hard top or flybridge models. Sasga’s manufacturing techniques and the materials they

18 |

use are some of the best you will see; vacuum-infused hulls, foam core deck and hull topsides, and collision bulkheads in the bow are just a few of the stand-out features. Twin engines are standard across the range, with maximum speeds of approximately 23knts. Edge-Water Marine Ltd currently has a new 42 flybridge in build, enabling it to launch the brand into the UK at the 2018 Southampton Boat Show. The 42 has proven to be a worldwide best-seller and it is easy to see why – a two- or three-cabin layout is available with either a raised galley in the saloon providing a stunning deck-level living area, or a lower galley providing a larger saloon with additional seating. With the standard twin Volvo D4 300hp you can expect a range of 300 miles – that’s under 4 litres per hour at cruising speeds. Edge-Water are inviting customers to the Boot Dusseldorf in January, where the 42 will also be showcased. The 42 starts at £443,500 inc VAT, which includes delivery and commissioning (correct at the time of print).

T

he Monaco Yacht Show is both the best and worst place to do a yacht review. Best in the sense that all the most important yachts on the market are there, crammed into Port Hercule, ready and waiting to be seen. Worst in that, three days into the show, exhaustion levels have reached new highs and too much sunshine, champagne and small talk means that everything becomes a bit of a blur. I dragged myself on board Tankoa’s Vertige on the very last day of the show and it is credit to this remarkable boat that she left a lasting impression, even at the height

24 |

of my weariness. This is the second build for Tankoa Yachts, a relatively new Italian shipyard which operates out of Genoa. Suerte was the first out of the yard, a svelte 69 metre job that showed the industry they meant business. Now comes the allaluminium, plumb bow Vertige, a smaller, yet equally perfectly-formed superyacht built for a French owner. Vertige is a 50m yacht – a good deal smaller than the yard’s debut, but my goodness, she feels much bigger. The full-beam master cabin (with two private balconies, naturally) and a master suite

sit on the main deck – with a further four cabins positioned on the lower deck. All feel sophisticated and grown-up, particularly in the onyx-clad bathrooms. There is also room for a gym, a home cinema, a roomy garage to fit the 7m tender and a separate jet-ski stowage area. An airy dining room can easily seat 12 guests, whilst in the main salon, there are fullheight windows and retractable sidewalls to continue that feeling of vast space. The exterior spaces are where this boat really works miracles though – and great efforts were made to ensure that visual contact with the sea was prioritised. The

MARINA REVIEW

design team at Francesco Paszkowski explains, “We energized the dimensions of all the exterior surfaces, from the sunbathing areas to the conversation zones; developing the exterior terraces, both fore and aft; amplifying the sun-shaded areas with the use of convertible awnings. We also removed the aft toerails to free up the view and sunk the glass surfaces into the superstructure, eliminating any obstructions from the inside looking out.” The results are remarkable – padding around the various decks, I check more than once that we really are on a 50m boat, not trusting my tired brain.

Up on the extended sundeck, there are uninterrupted views over the horizon from the open-air lounge – plus room left over for a spa pool, along with a couple of sunbathing areas. I eyed up those enormous outdoor lounging spaces more than once, imagining how sweet my sun-dappled siestas would be if all this were mine. On the upper deck, there’s a dinner table fit for 14 guests, a gigantic sofa for many more than that – and a disappearing 65-inch TV screen. Of course, there’s also a beach club back down on the lower deck, for easy access to the sea. The interior design is on point too, with

its blend of bleached teak, rosewood and leather making the space feel cool, clean and classic all at once. We have Italian designer Francesco Paszkowski to thank for that too, with Margherita Casprini drafted in to collaborate. The level of finish and the choice of textures and colours is second to none. Design is completely subjective, of course, but this is the only yacht I’ve looked around that seems perfectly tailored to my tastes. Should I ever become a billionaire, I’ll just point to Vertige and ask for more of the same. So top marks for form, but what about function? Edoardo Ratto, General Manager of

Tankoa Yachts seems content. “The first sea trail lasted about eight hours and was simply incredible,” he says. “Vertige reached her top speed of 16.5 knots with a 60% load (about 33,00 litres of diesel and more than 20,000 of water). The S501 will have a cruising range of over 5,000 nautical miles at 13.5 knots – this will make a real difference when crossing the Atlantic. Vibration is inexistent and the noise level is below contract: just think, in the Owner’s and VIP cabins it’s less than 50 db.” So, Tankoa has much to celebrate with the launch of Vertige – and happily, she comes fully stocked with all the necessary ingredients for a party. The boat is named after the owner’s favourite wine, after all, and 300 bottles are stored on board in an illuminated, floor-to-ceiling ‘cellar’ on the main deck. I might have been exhausted on that final day of the Monaco Yacht Show – but this was the ideal place to find my second wind.

ACTIVE MARINA

SINCE ITS LAUNCH IN 2011, THE RYA’S ACTIVE MARINA PROGRAMME HAS BEEN MAKING A DIFFERENCE – ENCOURAGING BERTH HOLDERS, THROUGH PARTNERING MARINAS, TRAINING CENTRES, BERTH HOLDER GROUPS AND YACHT CLUBS, TO GET MORE OUT OF LIFE WITH THEIR BOAT

 Refreshing your sailing skills will boost your confidence on the water

T

he beauty of sailing is even the most experienced sailor still discovers something new every day, from improving their boat’s performance to enhancing safety. On the other hand if you are new to life on the water, or have just brought a new boat, it can be hugely rewarding to learn the skills to help you to get out of the marina and enjoy using your boat with confidence. “A little bit of tailored training can really help to build knowledge and help to ease any worries which may be holding you back. It could be a refresher on manoeuvring or berthing, crew training, anchoring or a specialist workshop” explains Guy Malpas who runs the

RYA Active Marina. “If your marina is signed up to the programme, you and your crew could have the opportunity take part in practical training sessions with your local training centre. Just at your marina and they should be able to point you to a suitable local venue that can offer some tailor made training to help make to build your knowledge and boost your confidence” Guy continues. This could typically include topics such as basic diesel engine checks, how to better understand your radar, weather forecasting, VHF / DSC refresher, basic boat electrics, local navigation and pilotage and basic rig checks and others.

 The RYA Active Marina’s plans for the year include a rally to the Channel Islands

MARINA TECH LADIES DAYS In addition to the typical; refresher sessions Active Marinas often run Ladies Days too. These comprise morning or afternoon workshops which aim to increase skills and confidence in boat handing, manoeuvring and berthing techniques for women, away from their husbands and partners. It is also an ideal opportunity to socialise with other female boaters with many sessions finishing with a catchup over lunch. Speaking after a Ladies Day at Queen Anne Battery, participant Claire Woodend said: “It’s very good because often when you’re with your partner you tend to have fixed ideas and roles, but if you can go out with other people you can learn other things.” Fellow attendee Christine Klimczak agreed: “It’s nice to meet people I’ve met before but also get to know other people a little bit more, especially people you hopefully will bump into time to time through the summer.” CRUISING IN COMPANY For any boater, there’s no greater pleasure than enjoying the fun and freedom of being out on the water. However for those of us who’re lucky enough to own a boat, finding the time to fit cruising into our busy lifestyles or having the confidence to explore and extend our horizons can at times, become challenging. Cruising in company is fantastic way to tackle those visits to local harbours or rivers that may currently seem a little daunting or even a first time channel crossing. Guy explains: “Even experienced skippers can benefit from the experience and knowledge of others. It’s also a great way to meet and spend time with families and crews and in some marinas these kind of events have even led to the development of an informal and ‘virtual club’ feel which is a bonus.” You’ve got the boat, you’re a regular down at the marina, and you’ve enjoyed stretching your sea legs around the British coast. But for some, even relatively experienced sailors, taking the next step over the Channel, and beyond, for example, can prove a little daunting; a fear of the unknown stifling the possibilities for exploration and adventure being a boat owner can bring. Once again, this year RYA Active Marina has teamed up with the World Cruising Club for the second edition of ARC Channel Islands, a week long cruise exploring Cherbourg, Guernsey and Alderney leaving from the start port of Gosport. The aim of the rally was to encourage boat owners to sail beyond their normal cruising areas and to gain confidence taking their boats to unfamiliar destinations or longer passages. With a senior instructor and team from World Cruising Club sailing on board the lead boat, those sailing were offered guidance and help with planning the passages. They also enjoyed social events and sightseeing in each of the ports they visited. “I have done a few rallies and the big difference with the ARC Channel Islands cruise was that everyone had the same common goal: to get experience as a skipper of managing the boat on an extended cruise in challenging waters.” said Pete from Legato, summing up his time with the rally. “These were some of the nicest people I have ever met on a rally. We all got on so well. We have made new friends and all come away better sailors. What more can you ask for?”

 Cruising in company will take the edge of navigating new routes or harbours

The RYA Active Marina programme will introduce you to many potential new friends

HOW TO GET INVOLVED “Boat ownership is all about freedom and having fun and the Active Marina programme really does promote more active, vibrant harbours and increased regular boating” Guy Malpas concludes. “We’ve been delighted with the appetite shown by berth holders for Active Marina activities and are excited to be working on even more partnerships to extend these opportunities to even more people across the UK.” If you would like to find more information about the programme visit rya.org.uk/go/activemarina If your marina is already an Active Marina, speak to your marina manager to find out about next season’s opportunities and events.

Here, the bike’s frame went through stringent testing using the latest computer engineering software in its design phase. Prodrive rigorously stress-tested the bike under all applications, ensuring the whole bike passed ISO standards with flying colours at its first attempt. The bikes are assembled at Prodrive’s Banbury factory, alongside race and rally cars the company makes for Aston Martin, Subaru and Volkswagen. The frame is available in four colours (Hummingbird Yellow, Prestige Black, Freedom Blue or Burnt Orange), and each is individually numbered. For many years, Duncan Taylor Scotch Whisky Ltd has experimented in the use of differing cask sizes for the maturation of Single Malt and Single Grain Scotch whiskies. The research stemmed from a simple premise that there is more interaction between the wood and the spirit over a shorter period of time in a small cask than in a large cask, therefore allowing a more rapid ‘melding’ of wood, air and alcohol. This 8 year old single malt from the excellent Glentauchers distillery was distilled in 2008 and bottled in 2017 after enduring 3 months in a tiny octave cask, resulting in just 82 bottles.

PLINTH X WELLCOME COLLECTION

£20, plinth.uk.com

They say an image speaks a thousand words; in the case of Plinth’s new range of products, we could take that number down to three or four. ‘Keep clear of me’, for example, is expressed with a blue rectangle inside a yellow square – that is, according to the International Code of Signals, which they’ve made into a series of five pin badges. The symbols were originally used on flags by navy and commercial shipping vessels to send messages across both distance and language barriers; after all, when you want to make yourself understood, there’s no time to whip out a dual-language dictionary or beckon someone into earshot. Sometimes, an image is all you need.

REVIEW

C

old weather can be a miserable affair if you’re unprepared. The only sure-fire way to keep warm on the water is choosing the best kind of kit – a good base layer, mid layer and a well-designed jacket will ensure your core temperature remains comfortable, but all too often heavy outer layers are bulky and restrict movement. This is where a down jacket comes into its own – lightweight and offering incredible insulation, down has long been the choice for the hardiest adventurers in the great outdoors. The Vanir Icefall isn’t just any old down jacket either – the Helly Hansen team have looked at the key advantages and disadvantages of this exceptional insulating material, and have combined their 140 years of knowledge to produce one of the bestconsidered feather-filled coats I’ve ever worn, and with a wardrobe boasting technical down jackets from the likes of RAB and Lowe Alpine, that’s quite a statement. Constructed from water resistant ripstop polyester, Helly have selected only the finest 700 fill power Titanium goose down from trackable supplier Allied Feather, but what really sets this jacket apart from the competition is the additional use of PrimaLoft Silver, a synthetic insulator with the properties of down but which excels in wet or damp conditions. Helly have featured this wonder material in those areas most likely to be affected by sweat – under arms, upper back and neck – and on the shoulders where traditionally down gets compressed and looses effectiveness. The selection of silky smooth polyester rather than the coarser fabrics featured on many jackets endows the Vanir Icefall with the lovely soft and cosy feel of a sleeping bag, and it’s instantly comfortable. Cut with a looser fit than some jackets it allows you to select slightly bulkier midlayers – it also affords a greater degree of movement for your arms without the jacket lifting. A cosy, fully adjustable hood and high neck ensure the cold stays outside where it belongs, and the zip is fully baffled to prevent any drafts making their way inside. Storage isn’t really what down jackets are designed for – the two big dump pockets on the outside are most likely going to be filled with hands than any thing else. It does feature very large and easily accessible internal pocket though, should you need it. Over the course of the test period I’ve worn the Icefall back to back with my other down jackets and can honestly say HH has come up with a winner. It’s every bit as warm as my Lowe, but packs up half the size, feels much more luxurious and looks great too. The perfect companion in even the most extreme conditions.

PRACTICAL TIPS FOR JOBS OVER THE WINTER WITH DAYLIGHT HOURS SCARCE, NOW IS THE TIME TO PRIORITISE THE JOBS YOU HAVE TO DO TO YOUR BOATS OVER THE WINTER MONTHS AND MAKE THE MOST OF THE SUNLIGHT YOU HAVE SO YOU CAN ENJOY YOUR BOAT AGAIN WHEN SPRING COMES AROUND

 Sikaflex 291i is a multipurpose product used in marine constructions. It is suitable for making elastic, vibrationresistant joint seals, and can also be used for a variety of interior and exterior sealing applications

F

or many DIY boat enthusiasts, Sika Ltd’s technical marine expert Gareth Ross is a familiar face at UK boating events such as Beaulieu Boat Jumble and Scotland Boat Show. For the past few years he has become a regular on the practical demo circuit, sharing invaluable sealing and bonding application tips and product information with his audiences. Here he shares some really useful advice with our readers on some common jobs you may be tackling over the winter months… SURFACE PREPARATION A hot topic at any of Sika’s demonstrations at boat shows and other events is surface preparation. Sika always advises boat owners to prepare the surface as this is important to laying the foundation for a properly bonded or sealed substrate. Depending on the substrate, the preparation prior to applying the primer will vary. Sika® Remover 208, can be applied to a lint free paper towel to remove contamination from heavily soiled surfaces and Sika® Aktivator-205, an alcohol solution containing an adhesion promoter, can be applied to activate the surface prior to bonding. After cleaning, substrates will then require priming to improve adhesion. Sika offers two primers; Sika® MultiPrimer Marine, which is used to improve the adhesion on substrates such as woods like teak, metals like aluminium and galvanized or stainless steel, two component painted substrates, GRP and other plastics. Sika® Primer-207 is used to

MARINA TECH give improved adhesion in on substrates such as float glass, ceramic-coated glass and organic (plastic) glass. APPLICATION TEMPERATURE Most polyurethane sealants should not be applied in temperatures below 5°C or above 35°C because it affects the curing times. The optimum temperature for substrate and sealant is between 15°C and 25°C so it is very important to observe application temperatures to achieve the most effective finish. APPLICATION TIPS When you are ready to start applying the sealant or bonding product, there are different shape beads that can be created by changing the profile of the cartridge nozzle. For instance, if sealing with a marine polyurethane sealant such as Sikaflex® -291i, it is recommended that a round bead is created using the standard shape of the nozzle because this provides a thick layer of sealant to the area and thus prevents water ingress. However, if bonding two substrates together a triangular bead, formed by making a V cut into the cartridge nozzle, will ensure that both substrates are perfectly wetted out with the adhesive, guaranteeing a robust bond line. REPAIRING A LEAKY WINDOW There are few problems that can cause more damage to a boat than window, porthole and hatch leaks. Even well-constructed boats will eventually develop leaks simply because boats are not totally rigid structures. Repairing a leaky window is a common pre-season job for boat owners and taking the time to do it properly will pay dividends and save time in the long run by making it watertight for much longer. Before choosing your sealant, you will need to identify whether your windows are made of organic glass – commonly acrylic (Perspex) or polycarbonate (Lexan) – or mineral glass, which is the common glass that shatters. Sika has developed two sealants specifically for both types of marine glazing. Sikaflex-295® UV is ideal for bonding and sealing plastic marine glazing materials and because of its excellent UV resistance it can be used to seal joints in areas of severe exposure. Sikaflex-296® is suitable for use with all types of mineral glass-based windows. When working out the bond line configuration on plastic windows, it is important to bear in mind that they have more of a high thermal movement, which creates stress in the bond line. Additionally, dynamic stress due to boat movement and wind load has to be taken into consideration. As with conventional glass, plastic glazing panels generally do not protect the adhesive face from damage by UV radiation, therefore the bond line must be protected from direct sunlight. REMOVING SEALANT Sikaflex® is a polyurethane technology, developed to produce a strong and long-lasting bond so, it is ideal for applications that do not need repeating on a seasonal basis. Uncured Sikaflex® can be removed by using a solvent based cleaner

such as Sika®Remover 208 or with wipes such as Everbuild Wonderwipes®, within the first few minutes of applying the product. Cured polyurethane sealant can only be removed mechanically such as with a sharp knife, vibra saw, cheese wire or abrading it off with a sander.

 Sika Multiprimer Marine and Sika Primer 207

EXTENDING THE LIFE OF YOUR SEALANT Once all of your sealing and bonding jobs are complete, there may still be some product remaining in the cartridge. This does not need to be thrown away and can be kept for the odd repair that may crop up over the season. Simply keep the cartridge in a cool and dry place to slow down the curing process as hot and humid conditions will encourage moisture curing. Alternatively, if you don’t have much space on board, Sika® has developed a 70ml tube of its Sikaflex®-291i adhesive sealant, which helps reduce leftover product when only small amounts of sealant are needed.

BUILDING HELENA A LABOUR OF LOVE, DEDICATION TO CRAFTSMANSHIP AND ATTENTION TO DETAIL… NO GLIB TURN OF PHRASE CAN ACCURATELY CONVEY THE LEVEL OF PASSION AND DEDICATION THAT HAS GONE INTO CREATING THIS LIFE’S WORK; THIS WORK OF ART ON WATER

B

ack in 2002, Mike Ludgrove and a small group of Devon boatbuilders considered their options. Mike had built several small craft, but the next was to be something very different. She would be more than sixty feet overall and everything about her would bear the imprint of one underlying principle: handmade to the highest quality by craftsmen willing to invest soul into their work and deriving a sense of happiness from their achievements. In short, an antidote to the machine made. It stood to reason that if a group of guys were going to postpone indefinitely the greater part of any financial payment, there would have to be some compensating reward they could enjoy on a daily

basis. That reward was non-negotiable: an ability to conduct their skills in an environment unfettered from commercial constraints. The aim was to create something overridingly beautiful, regardless of how long it took. This was just the beginning. Ultimately Helena would also fulfil something very close to Mike’s heart. Once she had earned her annual keep through chartering in the Mediterranean, she would provide the opportunity for young people to sail on her, in the same way that Mike came to sailing at the age of thirteen. Back in the early 1970s, growing up in the lee of the Surrey Commercial Docks provided little in the way of luxury. Much in evidence at the time, those depredations of war

still littered the south London heartland. It was then that Mike won a scholarship to sail with The London Sailing Project on Rona, a beautiful classic yacht owned by Lord Amory. FOLLOWING THE LINES Helena’s lines were to be compatible with the classic era of early twentieth-century yacht design and build, and a collaboration was forged between Mike and two other Devon boatbuilder/designers, Howard Swift and the renowned designer Ed Burnett. The first embryonic lines began to take shape on paper. The remit required a lines plan that would look perfectly at home alongside those well-known names from the 1930s. And so designs by Mylne, Fife, Strange and Giles were closely studied. She would have a long keel and a spoon bow, while aft she would own the elegance that only a wellproportioned counter can provide. Her spars would brook no corners cut with aluminium extrusions. Instead Pacific coast grown, spar grade Douglas Fir was selected specifically for the purpose in Vancouver and shipped to Devon. This was milled by Mike and laminated into hollow section spars to save weight and tapered toward their ends for added beauty and gust response aloft. Such were the early stipulations in a long iterative process, that six months later produced a scale half model fashioned from the same high-quality hard maple from which the interior joinery would eventually be made. The design process murmured onward for another year beyond the half model… eighteen months in all. In the meantime Mike and his crew needed to find a space to house the project, with good access permitting Helena’s removal once complete. It had to be dry enough to maintain timber moisture at below fifteen percent and with a  The main bulkhead is prepared for receiving the compression post. three-phase electrical supply to run the powerful machinery that such a project would need to use. They found one that fitted the bill, although with one drawback. The building was filled with almost a thousand tons of wheat. “I remember thinking how many bowls of breakfast cereal this represented,” said Mike, and he watched from the sidelines as the farmer rode the vicissitudes of market, finally cashing in at a premium, five months later. Helena and her team moved straight in, running

the heavy-duty cables overhead before scouring the country for machinery. Benches and timber racks were constructed. Then came the moment to construct the metal Behemoth, the laminating jig. This heavy piece of kit, weighing in at several tons, would allow Mike to bend thick stacks of mahogany laminates until the adhesive had cured. STEP ABOARD You can charter Helena for anything from a day sail around Plymouth Sound (complete with champagne reception at Royal William Yard) to a luxurious Christmas in the Caribbean. Corporate Daysail is a tailored package aimed at staff groups/ businesses for team building or one-day holiday/adventure experience and is priced for the entire boat for a group of up to eight people with champagne reception and three-course dinner included. The day will begin when you and your team are welcomed aboard at the recently redeveloped Royal William Yard in Plymouth. This spectacular historic naval yard is the perfect place from which to set off on an afternoon sail around the natural harbour of Plymouth Sound, which offers a beautiful but sheltered location for those who have not earned their sea legs. Your group will be active participants in crewing Helena; under expert supervision you will be shown some basic navigation, how to sheet in the sails and even get your hands on the wheel. As the sun begins to set, you will return for dinner to the William Yard. Christmas in the Caribbean will be hosted from Sunday 24th December until Wednesday 27th December 2018, providing three nights’ accommodation on board for four people. Join the crew at St John’s, Antigua, for a champagne and lobster brunch then enjoy an afternoon of leisurely cruising. Dinner in the evening will be at a restaurant of your choosing, then return to Helena for a nights’ rest; Christmas breakfast is served on board the next morning. Then it’s a leisurely cruise to find the perfect spot to lay up, cool off in the sea, have some cocktails and enjoy a traditional Caribbean Christmas lunch on board. For more information on all the charter packages on offer, please email sailingyachtHelena@gmail.com.

HELP FROM ABOVE Helena was to be a defining object for Mike, who from the outset refused to allow time to determine how any individual component would come together. No part of Helena would carry the modern hallmark of speedy assembly, masked by a superficial skin of veneer. Her teak skylights would display traditional dovetail jointing and all her interior doors would be frame mortice and tenoned. In fact, Mike photographed every joint and hidden part of Helena’s making so that method and exactitude would always be observable. He even cast the twelve-and-a-half-ton lead keel himself in order to ensure dimensions were as he required. Local scrap yards quickly ran out of the scrap Mike needed to complete the task of melting the lead/antimony alloy in one. Then, at just the right moment, Exeter Cathedral received a new lead roof. You could say that Helena represents a resurrection of sorts in having a 13th century Gothic Cathedral in her making. Divine intervention perhaps? Mike has been working on Helena for 12 years now. “People often ask what may have happened by way of triumph or disaster,” he muses. “I would say the day I heard about the demolition of a Victorian cotton mill just north of Bombay was a great triumph. The floor beams were more than one foot square, eight metres long and weighing a quarter of a ton each. We shipped them

back to Devon in a container for our deck (and everything else to be made of teak). The timber was sumptuous, smelling of chocolate when cut and leaving the hands softened with the richness of oil in the wood. Modern plantation teak is so much drier and available only in relatively short lengths. The disaster came close to giving us all a lead coating, but thankfully didn’t happen. When melting the lead, the insulation around the mould proved too efficient. Temperatures beneath rose to over one thousand degrees and the steel framework began to collapse. That memory still makes me sweat.” ONWARDS AND UPWARDS After more than 12 years, Helena is ninetynine percent complete. With the help of some crowdfunding Mike hopes to raise enough to buy her sails, upholstery, a crane to lift her and a mooring to berth her, then she’ll be ready to float. Mike’s vision is for Helena to be used to inspire young people who would not ordinarily get an opportunity to sail, in much the same way as he first came to sailing. As such, Mike has teamed up with the Cirdan Trust (cirdantrust.org) which specialises in enabling groups of young people, particularly those who are disadvantaged in some way, to experience the challenge and adventure of life at sea. The aim is for the yacht to become self-funding through charter trips, with this revenue enabling Helena to provide young people the opportunity to set sail. Issue 15 |

MARINA PEOPLE

THE FUTURE OF BRITISH SAILING SUPPORTED BY HELLY HANSEN, TEAM CONCISE IS THE UK’S FASTEST OFFSHORE BOAT. MARINA MEETS SKIPPER NED COLLIER-WAKEFIELD TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT THEIR ACHIEVEMENTS AND AIMS

T

eam Concise was started more than ten years ago when Tony Lawson, Team Concise CEO, and Ned Collier Wakefield, Team Concise Skipper, wanted to introduce and train a team of young, dynamic and professional offshore sailors from the UK, who would become real competitors in some of the biggest and most extreme races in the world. As a highly accredited sailor in his own right, Ned has led Team Concise to many notable victories. He is now renowned as one of the top class 40 skippers and multihull sailors in the world, with his young team being described by the Royal Ocean Racing Club as the future of British sailing. Marina wanted to find out more about the team and their hopes for the future…

MARINA Why was Team Concise started? NCW We wanted to provide the opportunity for young offshore sailors to compete in some of the biggest sailing races in the world, with a clear career path in front of them and individual development plans enabling them to achieve their dreams as professional sailors. We wanted to be able to compete in some of the most exciting classes (Class 40, for example) on a solo and crewed basis, as well as dream big – for example, the MOD 70. MARINA What is it about Team Concise that makes you stand out from other teams? NCW Our team is made up from some of the most passionate and talented young sailors in the UK. Often

our team members come from an inshore or dinghy sailing background – meaning they have the core skills and enthusiasm needed to become an offshore sailor. When we take on new crew members we have a structured programme to help them progress through the fleet – whether it’s competing on the Diam 24 or working their way up to the MOD 70 team, we give them the opportunities as young sailors that they may not get with other teams.

Team Concise comprises some of the most passionate and talented young sailors from around the UK

MARINA What’s your personal career highlight? And for Team Concise as a team? NCW For me, it’s got to be the MOD 70 campaign and I think likewise for the team. To successfully make the leap to racing such a powerful boat at such a high level against the best sailors in the world and to be competitive within a year of having the boat feels like a real achievement. Winning the round Barbados race by 12 seconds and breaking the record by just under two hours was a wonderful moment of realisation. MARINA Who’s your inspiration? Why? NCW My inspiration lies with a friend, Rob Gauntlett. He’s the youngest Briton to ever climb to the summit of Mount Everest, at just 19. A year later, he completed the 180° expedition from the North Pole to South Pole, travelling by ski, dog sled and boat to finish the challenge. Sadly, in 2009 Rob died in a climbing accident, but his memory lives on and he still inspires me today.

 There are as many as 650 sailing clubs in the UK – all of which welcome new members

MARINA Sailing can be an expensive hobby/sport; how can people get involved who have never sailed before? NCW I think all hobbies can become expensive. However, it’s a misconception that sailing is an inaccessible or elitist sport. There are as many as 650 sailing clubs in the UK alone, and most of these will offer introductory courses. The majority of sailing clubs welcome new members, and will be incredibly supportive of anyone who is new to sailing, so you should find your local club and give it a go. MARINA What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given in your career? NCW Fitness is key. Fitness is so important as a sailor and it’s just as important to be training in the gym or out on your bike as it is to be sailing every day. Also, be smart about what sailing you are doing, make sure you are always progressing and pushing to be sailing with and against people who are better than you, or whom you will learn from. MARINA What is your ultimate dream/goal? NCW My ultimate goal is to bring together and create a team that wins the Volvo Ocean Race. The Volvo Ocean Race has to be the toughest sailing race in the world, where you really experience life at the extreme. The race

52 |

covers over 39,000 nautical miles of the world’s most treacherous seas, over a period of nine months away from home. Sailors are exposed to all types of extreme weather conditions, and temperatures as low as -5 Celsius, so it truly tests athletes and their kit. Sailors truly have to be at the top of their game in order to endure this race – from a physical and mental perspective – and only compete when they are the best of the best, so that’s the big dream for me. MARINA What do you love most about your sport? NCW In order to pursue a dream, you have to be committed and fully devote yourself to it. Every day I get to do the thing I love most – sail! We started Team Concise to provide an opportunity for young, offshore sailors to compete in some of the biggest sailing races in the world. I get immense satisfaction from knowing that I am actively helping others to fulfil their dreams, and in the process, I get to sail with some of the most passionate and talented young sailors in the world.

ith the confirmation of ConnectJets first UK sale of Piaggio’s pioneering Avanti EVO turboprop, available for charter from November 2017, a greener future is on the horizon for executive air travel. Boutique private aviation company ConnectJets has sealed the first ever UK sale of Piaggio Aerospace’s pioneering ‘green flying machine’, the Avanti Evo. With its unique design, this elegantly efficient aircraft delivers huge fuel savings, and dramatically reduces emissions as well as operating costs – providing the UK private aviation sector a truly environmentally-friendly alternative to fuel-guzzling exec jets. Operating under British registration, the UK’s first Avanti EVO will be available for charter from autumn 2017, helping to fulfil growing market demand both in the UK and in Europe for a new generation of greener, more economical private aircraft. The Avanti EVO combines refined Italian style and innovative technology with distinctive rear-facing propellers that offer superior climb performance and an ability to reach a maximum speed of 402kts (463mp/h) and altitude of

54 |

41,000ft, which is faster and quieter than most comparable jet aircraft in its class. Its aerodynamic lines and unique design contribute to a remarkably spacious whisper quiet cabin able to accommodate up to eight passengers. As the fastest twin turboprop ever produced, the Avanti EVO achieves greater speed without compromising operating costs, running at up to 30 per cent less than a jet of the same size. Its green production process and lifestyle management process have been recognised globally in the aviation sector for its reduced impact on the planet. Says Gabriella Somerville, managing director of ConnectJets, “As sole sales agent for the Avanti EVO in the British Isles and Channel Islands, I am delighted to conclude the first of what I am confident will be many sales of this exceptional aircraft. With issues of environmental impact and air quality drawing increasing media and public attention, the introduction of the pioneering Avanti EVO to UK skies could not have come at a better time, signposting a more sustainable way forward for the private aviation sector”. evoshowcaseuk.com

IS THERE MORE TO THE NEW GLE THAN JUST BADGE ENGINEERING? MARINA TAKES A CLOSER LOOK AT THE REPLACEMENT FOR THE VENERABLE MERCEDES M-CLASS

L

ON THE ROAD One thing that plagues all modern luxury SUVs is bulk; sitting in the plush, spacious cabin you’re immediately aware of the mass surrounding you, however even the lowest-powered four-cylinder diesel fitted to the 250d is capable of delivering the kind of confident performance owners of this class of car seek. Our review 350d AMG Line, fitted with the excellent three-litre V6 twin-turbo diesel, certainly doesn’t want for extra shove. Capable of propelling the GLE’s 2,175kg weight to 60mph in just 7.1 seconds, and on to a top speed of 140mph, Issue 15 |

RUGGED

et’s be honest here – you’re far more likely to see a GLE ferrying A-list celebrities to a flash London restaurant than up to its wheelnuts in mud. The GLE may make no apologies favouring style, but don’t imagine for one minute it’s become a pseudo off-roader – just as Keira Knightley could don a pair of hiking boots and climb Ben Nevis, so too could the GLE. As capable off-road as any of today’s luxury SUVs – arguably more so – the GLE can more than hold its own in the rough-stuff. It’s just that, for the most part, its owners don’t want to. There’s no getting away from the fact that the ‘new’ GLE really is just a face-lifted update to the old ML. Things get a little confusing because Mercedes already had the GL-Class sitting in a tier above the old ML, so under the revised naming convention that car becomes the GLS (being of the same stature as the S-Class saloon), with the new GLE being paralleled with the E-Class – there’s also the GLC and the GLA… See, it all makes sense now. To think of the GLE as just a face lift and badge change would be to do this exceptional SUV an injustice. Revised engines have increased fuel efficiency and reduced CO2 emissions across the range, with the new nine-speed automatic 9G-Tronic gearbox fitted to the diesel and V6 petrol engine options (the hybrid and V8 AMG have to make do with the older seven-speed ‘box).

58 |

the 350d is probably the best choice for most customers. With 258bhp and a hefty 620mn of torque available from 1,600rpm, the V6 is a willing and efficient engine, returning a decent combined 42.8mpg with a tax-friendly 179g CO2 figure, it’s the sensible model to pick – quiet and refined, but delivering a nice meaty rumble at higher revs, it will effortlessly pull a 3,500kg braked trailer or waft you past slow-moving traffic. The new nine-speed automatic mated to the diesel in our review car copes admirably with its cog-swapping duties, delivering near-seamless changes far quicker than the outgoing seven-speed unit I’ve driven in the old ML

350d. Only in the winding country lanes that make up part of my regular test route does it seem a little over-willing to kick down, exiting tighter bends often resulting in a change to a lower ratio and a touch of hesitancy before it fires off in search of the next corner – swapping to sport-mode helps by retaining the higher revs of a lower gear as you enter the corner and affords more confidence and composure on exit; it’s an issue with just about every automatic vehicle I’ve taken on that particular route. A manual down shift before the corner, forcing the car to hold the gear through the bend, is the only way to ensure it never happens. Fortunately the steering wheel mounted manual paddles afford this option, switching seamlessly into manual with a flick, and reverting back to automatic mode once you stop using them. The Airmatic air suspension, fitted to AMG Line spec and above, does a good job of keeping the bulk in check around corners, although even in sport-mode it can’t quite match the dynamics offered by the more sporty competition from Porsche and the Range Rover Sport. The ride is very comfortable, particularly at higher speeds, and does a great job of isolating cabin occupants from the road surface – the GLE is a superb motorway and long-distance cruiser, where the supremely comfortable seating leaves you feeling fresh even after many hours behind the wheel. The face lift brings the styling in line with the current design language of other Mercedes models, but the core silhouette of the old ML remains clearly visible under the revised front bumper and bonnet. I do prefer the slightly softer look of the new GLE to that of the outgoing model though – and lovely touches like the projected MercedesBenz logo puddle lights under the door mirrors are a nice touch to remind you of the prestige. LIFE INSIDE The 350d AMG Line has an extremely well equipped interior, with sumptuous leather, aluminium detailing and all the usual kit you’d expect in a car of this quality and price –

 A revised infotainment system and updated exterior styling tweaks set the new GLE apart from the old ML, but you have to look quite closely to spot them. Parked side-by-side the differences are apparent, but in isolation it would be easy to mistake the new car for the outgoing model

sat-nav, DVD, climate control, and an assortment of driver aids such as Active Brake Assist, Crosswind Assist and Collision Prevention Assist. Our car also benefitted from the optional high-gloss poplar wood trim, excellent Bang & Olufsen BeoSound surround sound system and rear seat DVD screens which are a blessing on long trips with bored children (or bored adults for that matter). The commanding view from the electrically adjustable and heated front seats offers great visibility forward, although as with all long and tall vehicles, rear visibility is a little hampered. Fortunately the electrically folding side mirrors are large and afford good rear visibility, and the specification also includes 360° cameras and myriad sensors to aid parking. The old rotary dial infotainment system gets an upgrade making navigation of the menus and options easier Rear seat passengers benefit from plenty of legroom and rear privacy glass, with ample storage provided by the 690 litre boot space. Ambient lighting in a choice of three colours and large windows lend a light and airy upmarket feeling to the whole cabin. MARINA’S OPINION So should you buy one? Well to be honest, at this level purchasing decisions tend to be driven as much by brand loyalty and image as they are by price and dynamics – and the Mercedes-Benz image is a great one. Boat owners and those with a need to move heavy trailers will certainly be interested by the 3,500kg towing capacity and the

convenience of the optional electrically-folding tow bar. There might be sportier handling SUVs available from Porsche, BMW and Range Rover or more frugal ones from Volvo, but few combine all the elements customers seek into one vehicle – the GLE, like the ML before, is a class act and certainly worthy of consideration by anyone in the market for a prestigious luxury SUV that makes an impression wherever it goes.

SAVING OUR SEAS THE MARINE CONSERVATION SOCIETY (MCS) HAS BEEN MARINA’S CHARITY OF THE YEAR 2017. WE HOPE YOU’VE ENJOYED READING ABOUT THE UNDERWATER WORLD THAT SURROUNDS US, AND HAVE BEEN INSPIRED TO SUPPORT MCS IN THEIR WORK

T

his Autumn the BBC showed its epic documentary series Blue Planet II, narrated by Sir David Attenborough, featuring amazing footage from around the globe. The sea’s surface hides so much of what lies beneath, and the series was a real eye-opener for big audiences. The programmes gave a real sense of what it’s like being immersed underwater among an array of impressive – even fairly daunting – creatures. They opened up a world of revelations. Who knew that a fish could have a memory that lasted its lifetime? Well, the tuskfish that used a coral as a tool to break open it’s

62 |

shellfish food certainly does. You might also have caught Sky News Ocean Rescue on the TV this year, too. As well as using its position to highlight environmental issues faced by the world’s oceans through news reports and documentaries, Sky the company has made many commitments to make the marine world a better place: they’ve removed singleuse plastics from their own workplaces, signed up for beach cleans and surveys all around the country and, in August, sculpted a giant whale fashioned from recovered and recycled plastic items. When Sky News told MCS they needed

a partner to join them on a whistle-stop tour of the UK coast with a life-size whale fashioned from plastic waste, we jumped at the chance! The idea was to tour the UK as part of the Sky Ocean Rescue campaign, encouraging the public to make changes to their plastic consumption. From its opening event on the side of the Thames, the tenmetre whale drew the crowds in. It was hugged by summer holidaymakers on the beach at Newquay, Cornwall, viewed by city workers in the centre of Birmingham, and welcomed by the all-female eXXpedition sailing crew into Leith as they completed their Round Britain 2017 tour. Some of the marine life encountered by sailors and beachgoers this year has been pretty amazing. For reasons not quite known, thousands of Portuguese man-owar washed up on UK shores throughout the Autumn. These jellyfish-like animals possess a powerful sting, and it seems that storms across the Atlantic blew them from their usual mid-ocean haunts towards our corner of the Atlantic. We’ve seen bluefin tuna caught by anglers, leatherback turtles and sunfish washed up on beaches, and whales and turtles spotted by sailors, too. There’s some good news to report on some of the threats our sea life faces. When thousands of volunteers headed out to clean beaches this year, they found fewer plastic bags than ever before, a direct result of the small charge on bags at shop counters. There are also moves afoot to ban small plastic particles, called microbeads, from make-up and scrubs that otherwise get flushed down the sink and into the sea. The health of some of the stocks of

fish we eat, like cod and haddock in some places, has improved – check the Good Fish Guide website, or the award-winning mobile phone app, for a range of options for a sustainable seafood supper. Representatives of governments and businesses from many countries made hundreds of commitments at an Ocean Summit, held in Malta in October. These include reducing emissions of CO2 from shipping, reducing illegal fishing and manufacturers’ commitments to finding alternatives to plastic, amongst many others. 2017 has been an awesome year for the Marine Conservation Society; so what can we look forward to in 2018? We can expect Brexit to grab the headlines throughout the year, and protection of our sea life, precious fish stocks and pollution control will need to be a priority. 2017 has proved a good year for our seas – let’s make this one even better!

 The compulsory plastic bag charge has resulted in many fewer bags being found on our beaches during this year’s beach cleans

ABOUT THE MARINE CONSERVATION SOCIETY Marina’s chosen charity of 2017, the Marine Conservation Society (MCS) works to ensure that the sea’s rich wildlife can be restored, fish stocks grow more plentiful and our beaches and seawater become cleaner. In it, on it, under it or by it – however you love the sea, by supporting MCS you can be part of the movement to save our seas. Together we can reduce marine litter, protect wildlife and habitats and encourage more people to only eat sustainable seafood – all actions that will help preserve our seas for future generations to enjoy. KARPAZ GATE MARINA

TYHA INTERNATIONAL MARINA OF THE YEAR HAS CELEBRATED ITS AWARD WIN WITH ITS MOST SUCCESSFUL SEASON SINCE OPENING AND THE LAUNCH OF NEW BENEFITS FOR 2018

66 |

I

nspired by its mission to welcome more sailors to North Cyprus, Five Gold Anchor-rated Karpaz Gate Marina is now building on the momentum created by an award-winning 2017 by announcing a range of unique packages, incentives, and attractive servicing and berthing rates. The stunning Karpaz peninsula-based marina is in the running to retain its title of The Yacht Harbour Association’s top international marina following a successful year and reports of record numbers of people visiting the marina, using the dry dock for repair and maintenance work, and enjoying the leisure facilities. TYHA competition attracts over 4,000 votes and is aimed directly at boat owners and boat crew, asking them to vote for their favourite Gold Anchor marina online based on overall experience, facilities and service. After opening just six years ago as the first modern marina in North Cyprus, Karpaz Gate Marina was particularly honoured to receive the prestigious award as it is decided by their berth holders. The positive feedback and enthusiasm from customers demonstrated by the 2017 award reflects the full-service capabilities, exceptional value and personal attention that Karpaz Gate Marina can offer its clients. With further ambitions to expand its staff and facilities in the years ahead, the marina has just announced its latest benefits as it continues to further strengthen its status as one of the East Mediterranean’s leading facilities and tap into the huge potential of the region as a yachting destination. BERTHING BENEFITS FOR 2018 Karpaz Gate Marina’s campaign for next year focuses on providing boat owners with unique, personalised packages, special winter berthing offers and good value rates.

MARINA SPOTLIGHT Set in an untouched and peaceful location on the Karpaz Peninsula, the marina offers many advantages as a one-stop shop for boat owners, with a capable technical service centre, safe and hassle-free mooring, 24/7 security and first-class leisure facilities. It is ideal as a low cost, long-term base for all yacht owners seeking a safe, secure home for their boat in the East Mediterranean and is also an unmissable destination for a short to medium-term visit for cruising sailors. New from the end of 2017 and for 2018, annual berth-holders who renew their contracts will now be rewarded with a special renewal discount on the published yearly rate. The marina is also extending a popular package for boat owners which offers free haul out, hull wash, antifouling application and 14 days hard standing included in the annual price. Alternatively, annual berth holders can choose the option of up to a 40% discount instead of the haul out (terms and conditions apply). Additional VIP packages include a Frozen Contract, which offers discounted annual mooring with the right to freeze an annual contract for up to 3 months at one time only during the contract period. Special care, winterising and de-winterising packages are also offered to check equipment and clean exterior and interior areas in the owner’s absence. Available to view on www.karpazbay.com, the 2018 berthing and services rates offer boat owners exceptional value for money for annual and short-term mooring and technical work throughout the year. In addition, special summer and winter campaign prices are available on request. Before any special campaign discounts, an annual berth at Karpaz Gate Marina for a monohull boat with an LOA of 12m to 14.99m will cost 3,741 with the free haul out option, while a one-year berth for a boat between 15m and 17.99m is priced at 6,880. The marina also offers special rates for catamarans and can safely haul out boats up to 10.5m beam. UNIQUE DESTINATION Purpose-built to meet the needs of boat owners, official port of entry Karpaz Gate Marina is tax free, so visitors can benefit from duty-free status for savings on fuel, technical service, spare parts and supplies. Karpaz Gate Marina has one of the best boatyard facilities in the region and a 300-ton capacity travel lift, enabling it to execute a wide scope of technical and specialist work. It also has outstanding on-site leisure facilities including a Beach Club with 33m infinity pool and water sports centre. Hemingway’s Resto-Bar offers seasonal menus featuring international and traditional Cypriot and Turkish cuisine. Karpaz Gate Marina is located in a secure and sheltered harbour with 24/7 CCTV and security personnel throughout the marina as well as access control and access cards for each area. Karpaz Gate Marina is perfectly placed as a convenient starting point for boaters to discover the stunning coastline of North Cyprus, sail to the southern Turkish coastline or head towards the Greek Islands. Visitors will discover miles of empty sandy beaches, idyllic anchorages, ancient harbours and rare wildlife, plus there is plenty to see inland, including historic castles and abbeys and the fascinating towns of Nicosia, Kyrenia and Famagusta.

SPOTLIGHT ON…

TROON YACHT HAVEN

FOR SAILORS WANTING TO DISCOVER THE WEST COAST OF SCOTLAND, THERE IS NO FINER OR SAFER BASE TO START YOUR ADVENTURE THAN THE AWARDWINNING MARINA OF TROON

68 |

T

he West Coast of Scotland has some of the best sailing waters in the world, and Troon Yacht Haven offers the perfect location to enjoy them. As the most southerly marina on the Clyde estuary, Troon gives you the choice of exploring the sheltered waters of the upper firth or further to the western isles. Troon is one of the most established marinas in Scotland and has a rich 30-year heritage and a glowing reputation within the sailing community. Sailors from around the UK and Ireland use Troon as a cruising base for seasonal and annual berthing afloat or ashore. What’s more, with Troon being located just 10 minutes from Glasgow Prestwick Airport, and around half an hour from Glasgow city, its connectivity allows it to be easily accessed by sailors from all parts of northern Europe. “Some boaters can’t understand how easy Troon is to access even though we’re so close to the outer reaches of the Scottish West Coast”, explains Marina Manager Stephen Bennie. “We have to explain that Troon genuinely can be accessed by road, rail, air and ferry making it easy to leave the boat with us while you return home.” “We love the diversity” Stephen continues. “We have boaters from England, Wales, Ireland, Scandinavia and mainland Europe coming to cruise in our waters all-year round. It’s wonderful to be able to welcome such a range of sailors and share our tips and advice for discovering the region”. The marina is flanked by large harbour walls ensuring yachts and motorboats are well-protected even during some of Scotland’s less-friendly weather. But as soon as the weather passes, boaters in Troon benefit from the beauty of the Firth of Clyde with stunning sailing on their doorstep with the isles of Arran, Bute, Pladda and Ailsa Craig within easy reach. Staying ashore, the coastal town of Troon is a popular holiday destination, and it’s easy to see why. Beautiful scenery, fascinating history, some of the finest golf courses in the world, ancient castles and captivating visitor attractions are all nearby. Within the marina itself, boaters can rest easy with Yacht Havens staff on-site 24/7 to keep an eye on boats. The washrooms were recently refurbished and laundry facilities are also on-site. Troon’s boatyard operates all-year round offering hosting and storage ashore for boats up to 50 tons. Visitors can login

to free WiFi and relax in style on the first floor Bar & Restaurant, Scotts. The popular eatery offers panoramic views across Troon beach and beyond. NATIONAL AWARD FOR TROON Troon Yacht Haven has been crowned Best UK Marina/Harbour 2017 in the Sailing Today Awards which recognises the very best in the UK and international sailing world. The Ayrshire marina beat 4 other shortlisted Marinas and Harbours for the title which was voted for by readers of the popular UK sailing magazine, Sailing Today. Readers chose Troon over marinas from Cornwall, the Solent, the east of England and the Channel islands. There was further good news for the Scottish west coast with the region being, once again, nominated as the best Cruising Grounds in the world. Stephen Bennie, Director at Troon Yacht Haven, commented on the award saying, “The marina team work tirelessly to assist berth holders and marina visitors, so this is an amazing way to finish to the year. What else could you possibly need?!

F

rom the moment the speedboat delivers you safely to the jetty at Amilla Fushi and you step ashore to be greeted by your personal butler with a cool refreshing drink, you realise that you aren’t going to want to leave… Ever! Boasting pristine sandy beaches, crystalline blue lagoons rich in marine life and just 59 whitewashed island villas and eight larger residences, this exclusive Maldives resort in the UNESCO-protected biosphere reserve of Baa Atoll is heaven on earth for beach lovers. The resort’s lagoon houses are Miami-meetsMaldives – all clean lines and gleaming white surfaces,

while the residences nestled in the palm trees along the pristine beach offer majestic accommodation of up to eight rooms. Our ocean lagoon house with fresh water infinity pool gave us direct access to the lagoon via a short set of steps. Modern and spacious, there was enough wardrobe space for us to move in for a year and little touches like the beautiful Aesop toiletries added an extra level of luxury. Outside, a decking area with shower, loungers and huge day bed meant that we could happily spend a leisurely day basking in the sunshine with the only decision – pool or sea?

Getting around the island is a breeze – villas come with enough bicycles to offer each guest the option of cycling around, or a quick call to your butler via the discreet mobile phone he gave you when you arrived and he will collect you by buggy and deliver you where ever you wish to go. Travelling tires the body, so our first call was to the spa via a stunning journey through the breathtakingly beautiful jungle. Hidden in the shade of the Banyan trees you will find the Javvu Spa with its ten treatment pods alongside a yoga pavilion, fitness centre and private training studio. After a jet lag massage that left

us feeling relaxed and invigorated, the family was ready to enjoy all that this beautiful island had to offer. PLENTY TO EXPLORE We collected our snorkelling gear from the Hub and embarked on our first adventure, a boat trip out into the beautiful blue lagoon. After just five minutes in the water we were swimming with four majestic turtles, an experience that will never be forgotten! Nowhere on earth is the sea as captivating as it is here, lapping at the shores of Amilla Fushi. The breath-taking waters of the Indian Ocean surrounding this pristine island

offer endless opportunities to discover and explore a magnificent underwater world that lies beneath the glittering surface. This environment is so rich in marine life that the area was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2011, largely due to the population of majestic manta rays that visit Hanifaru during the southwest monsoon (usually between June and October). Water-based activities available from Amilla Fushi include an incredible Marine Biology program, adrenaline fuelled water sports, dazzling diving excursions and private boat charters that enable you to enjoy the endless shades of blue surrounding the island. FOOD FOR THOUGHT After sipping champagne cocktails on the beach while watching the sun go down, we realised how hungry we all were. A quick call to Samir, our very attentive butler, and we were whisked away on a buggy and taken to Amilla Fushi’s award-winning signature restaurant Feeling Koi, not only a delight for the tastebuds but a wonderful experience to share with family and friends. Japanese minimalism on an open deck, chefs performing in a theatre kitchen – culinary magic with exquisite presentation. Izakaya-style dining comes to life with openhearted service and shared ‘tapas’ plates. Umami works of art in a spectacular setting. The beef tacos, along with the nigiri sushi, were a huge hit with the younger members of the Beaufoy family, but I most enjoyed and can highly recommend the black cod saikyo yaki, braised and served with bok choy, crispy veggies and miso sauce. With direct seaplane or speedboat access for guests who like to make an entrance, or via a jetty over the lagoon for those who prefer a more low-key arrival, Feeling Koi is open daily from 7.30pm – 11pm. Other dining options on the island include The Wine Shop & Cellar Door, where you can sample fine wines and artisanal cheeses as part of private or group tastings or wine dinners; 1 Oak Lounge, an intimate destination for dessert, sunset cocktails, post-dinner drinks and grooving to live DJs; the Mystique Garden, a magical location for a destination dining event like no other, offering family-style cuisine served to a backdrop of enchantment with a dash of Amilla sparkle; the Clean

FUN FOR ALL THE FAMILY Entertainment on dry land stretches to the Emperor Beach Club – Amilla’s epicentre of fun and games for all ages. During the day, guests can listen to smooth beach club beats and indulge in tasty treats from the BBQ and snack menu while sipping on delicious cocktails, and the outdoor cinema nights are a mustdo for every guest. Sultan’s Village Kids Club is the resort’s watersports centre and teens entertainment zone, and there’s also the Amilla lifestyle & fashion store, KIWI St Tropez pop-up shop, Shutterfish Photography Studio and Javvu Spa, featuring 10 treatment pods, yoga pavilion, fitness centre and outdoor wellness area to keep boredom at bay.

If you don’t want to drop your exercise regime while you’re away, take advantage of Amilla Fushi’s private training studio managed by Bodyism and the two floodlit tennis courts managed by Jim Courier Tennis and JCT Tennis Pro. If you’re travelling with a group, why not play a game on the Amilla Arena football pitch? For visitors interested in the incredible biodiversity, the HUB (Home of the Underwater Biosphere) and marine biology centre is a real draw, offering exciting excursions and activities within the UNESCO Biosphere of Baa Atoll, including to Hanifaru Bay, one of the worlds’ largest manta ray feeding destinations, and the Blue Hole snorkel and dive site at Amilla’s reef. If you are a lover of the sea – in it, on it or under it – and are looking for a relaxed vibe with bags of unpretentious luxury then Amilla Fushi is the destination for you and your loved ones.

STAYING AT FINOLHU They say sisters are joined heart to heart and Amilla’s sister resort Finolhu is all heart and more. This refined, retro-inspired island paradise for fun-loving beach glitterati offers an unexpected revival of the halcyon days of the classic chic getaway. It’s the ultimate island experience for couples and fun-loving families. Finolhu is all about the entertainment, and the Finolhu Crab Shack is a must-visit. Just a 30-minute speedboat ride from Amilla Fushi, and located halfway along Finolhu’s stunning sandbar, we shared a platter of fresh seafood washed down with a crisp sauvignon blanc; while the children paddled in the crystal clear sea we sat with our feet buried in the cool sand and watched the world go by. I have to say this is one of my favourite spots on this Earth. We extended our visit to Finolhu by a few days, staying in a two-bedroom Ocean Lagoon pool villa. Two separate huge bedrooms, each boasting a 7ft x 7ft bed, made this the perfect family retreat, and a private fresh water pool, direct access to the ocean and a Marshall sound system meant we could lounge in the pool or relax on the spacious decking area listening to music and the soft lap of the water – a perfect combination for the senses. With a more fun, retro vibe, this island boasts entertainment by the bucket load – Area 51 will entertain you with everything from fire dancing to swimming with the resident mermaid! L

aunched in 2017, Davy J is a forward-thinking and aspirational British swimwear brand creating something incredibly rare in the fashion world – functional, flattering and fashion-forward swimwear using 100% regenerated Nylon yarn from waste, including spent and ghost fishing nets. The fabric used in Davy J swimsuits contains an innovative recycled Nylon fibre – ECONYL® yarn, which is 100% regenerated from waste Nylon sources. These include discarded fishing nets, carpet fluff, textile offcuts and pre-consumer Nylon waste. For every 100 Davy J suits sold, around 9kg of waste has been regenerated; through collaboration with organisations including Healthy Seas (healthyseas.org), spent and ghost fishing nets are actively collected by volunteer divers and fishing communities and fed into the regeneration process to prevent the damage they can wreak on wildlife and ecosystems. Davy J is committed to supporting British manufacturing and proudly wears the Made in Britain marque on all its pieces. Built for the outdoorsy among you and double-lined with a high elastane content to ensure they hold their shape and stay put, all Davy J suits are made through a small production unit in Wales. Founder Helen Newcombe explains the company’s ethos: “Our mission is to support a circular economy and look at ways to not only reduce our impact on the environment through our supply chain, production and packaging use, but also to actively work with and support processes that reduce wastage and maximise natural resource value at the end of a product’s life.” When you eventually fall out of love with your Davy Js, you can even send them back and the company will regenerate the material. davyj.org

he Datai, Langkawi, its horizontal walls rising out of the forest and entrance guarded by two giant horses (heralds of the warrior time of the 15th century), offers visitors the best of both beach and rainforest holidays. It’s located in a 10-million-year-old rainforest that teems with wildlife, yet still overlooks the pristine white sands of the tranquil Datai Bay and clear waters of the Andaman Sea. Set in a pristine rainforest, the resort is blessed with an abundance of plant and wildlife, being home to some fascinating and beautiful animals including the great hornbill, the dusky leaf monkey, the rare colugo (flying lemur of South East Asia), macaques, flying squirrels, lizards, geckos and the white-bellied sea eagle. Resort guests can join the complimentary morning and evening nature walks or other excursions including visits to the mangrove forests, guided by the world-renowned and passionate resident naturalist, Irshad Mobarak. Datai Bay is a perfect crescent of white sandy beach, with a magnificent backdrop of primordial mountains with marbled craggy peaks. Unsurprisingly, it has been awarded one of the Top 10 Beaches worldwide by National Geographic. If you ever tire of lapping up the sunshine and breath-taking views across the Andaman Sea, adventurous guests can take part in a variety of complementary water sports including paddle-boarding, kayaking and snorkelling.

ACCOMMODATION The Datai’s 54 luxurious rooms, 42 rainforest villas, 12 suites and 14 beach villas offer breath-taking views of the surrounding nature and rainforest. Our 218-square-metre Beach Villa boasts a spacious bedroom and separate living room area with high, raked timber ceilings and a relaxing, sumptuously furnished open plan living and dining area that opens to a 10-metre private pool and sun deck. The Dining Room offers a lavish buffet breakfast and excellent lunchtime menu, but by evening it is transforms into a fine-dining venue with dishes inspired by modern Asian cuisine, focusing on the five elements of taste. My personal favourite was The Pavilion… Floating on 30m-high stilts in the canopy of the rainforest with a view of the Andaman Sea and the Thai Tarutao islands on the horizon, it serves Thai cuisine. Guests can also take cooking classes. I recommend the Malay culinary class, during which local chefs taught our small group some of their delicious signature dishes.

Inspired by the ancient healing and beauty tradition of Ramuan, the spa menu features indigenous Malay rituals using rare medicinal jungle plants and following secret recipes used for thousands of years by local shamans. NEXT CHAPTER The Datai is about to undergo a 10-month regeneration, the first of its scale since the resort’s inception in 1993. The ‘Datai DNA’ is being preserved by renowned Interior Designer Didier Lefort of DL2A who, along with visionary Australian Architect Kerry Hill, was responsible for the original design that many know and love, 24 years ago.

The redesign will include renovations to the resort’s guestrooms, suites and villas; the construction of a Nature Centre; additional spa pavilions; a refreshed retail space; and a fitness centre by the beach as well as an overall enhancement of the landscaping. Irshad Mobarak will continue to play a pivotal role in ensuring that the project will have a minimal impact on the surrounding rainforest and its creature inhabitants. During the resort’s closure, The Datai Langkawi will be the first hotel in Malaysia to offer employees advanced education programmes – a tailor-made programme in collaboration with leading hospitality universities. “The grande dame of luxury resorts in Asia looks forward to a new era, and remains focused on reaffirming our island paradise as the most sought-after destination in the region and beyond,” said Arnaud Girodon, General Manager. YOS Expeditions’ ice pilots, Expedition Leader Martin Enckell and additional EYOS staff were thrilled to have the opportunity to work with the award-winning BBC team recently. Together, they provided support and assistance with permitting, polar logistics and operational support for Alucia’s threemonth, three-voyage deployment to Antarctica. “Congratulations to BBC for capturing some of the most stunning imagery of our natural world on this expedition. That it was filmed under the most trying of circumstances in some of the most remote parts of the

world only makes the result that much more impressive,” commented Ben Lyons, CEO of EYOS Expeditions. The Antarctic segments were filmed from the 56m M.V. Alucia, a purpose-built yacht of extraordinary capability including the latest in technical diving, filming and scientific research equipment. Two subs – the Triton 3300/3 and the Deep Rover 2 – are rated for a maximum depth of 1,000 metres. EYOS Founding Partner Rob McCallum said “When we built Alucia in Seattle during 2008-2011 we focused on creating a very capable expedition platform. Having

PROFESSIONAL EXPLORERS EYOS EXPEDITIONS RECENTLY SUPPORTED THE FILMING OF THE BBC’S BLUE PLANET II IN ANTARCTICA. FILMED DURING THE AUSTRAL SUMMER OF 2016/17, THE ACCLAIMED SERIES PREMIERED ON BBC ONE THIS OCTOBER AND REVEALED SOME OF THE OCEANS’ MOST BREATH-TAKING WILDLIFE SPECTACLES her as the primary platform for submersible, helicopter and scuba ops in Antarctica fulfils our original intention when we built her.” EYOS Expeditions staff have lead over 780 safe and successful voyages to Antarctica, and hundreds more to the Arctic and the world’s most remote places. EYOS Expeditions has been designing private super yacht expeditions since 2008, and the company’s founders, Tim Soper and Rob McCallum, have spent decades designing ground-breaking itineraries. They routinely take clients to destinations rarely or never before visited

by private yachts. McCallum added “Our clients are people who want to get to the most remote parts of the planet in order to achieve their mission. Often it is to highlight the plight of our oceans and the threats to the world we live in. For instance, just recently our Expedition Leader Justin Hofman captured an image of a seahorse with a cotton bud whilst on expedition in Borneo, highlighting the issue of marina plastic debris and earning him a place as a finalist in the Wildlife Photographer of the Year awards”. eyos-expeditions.com

CHAPEL CANDLES TICKING THE BOXES FOR SUMPTUOUS AROMA, GLOW AND STRIKING DESIGN, AND PERFECT TO GIVE AS A GIFT OR AS A PERSONAL TREAT, THE CHAPEL LUXURY CANDLE COLLECTION ALSO CARRIES A PAUSE MESSAGE TO CREATE SOME CALM IN THE CHRISTMAS CHAOS

C

reated with leading fragrance expert Fran Brown, the Chapel’s three new botanicalrich, mood-enhancing scents evoke different times of day. Each single-wick candle, (£65, shop.thechapel.co.uk) is hand-poured in the UK into elegant ceramic vases etched with flora, fauna, birds and bees to help tell the fragrance story, and intricate gold blocking to add a subtle splash of Christmas sparkle. With a substantial 80-hour burn time, the vases can be used again to house more candles, flowers or plants once the wax has burned, making them eco-friendly too. “We often use candles at Christmas to create a welcoming atmosphere, but even the simple act of lighting a candle and focusing on its glow and fragrance can encourage a small pause,” explains Amanda Dicker, founder and creative director of The

Chapel. “Giving ourselves space to bring our focus back to the present and celebrate all the good things from the day, the week or even the year is really important when most of us are living life at 100 miles an hour, plus a home that smells lovely is uplifting in itself and this fragrance can act as an inspiring reminder of this ritual of celebration.” Oparus is a dawn chorus of exotic florals, citrus blossom and warm earthy tones to lift the spirits. Mellifera is a sweet, warm and herbaceous blend of new mown hay, red apple, blueberry and blackberry, lavender, freesia, white rose, lily of the valley, tuberose and golden acacia honey, patchouli, moss and vanilla. Noctula, meanwhile, is a scent to evoke the hour between sunset and darkness, a heady blend of crimson fruits and flowers caught in the evening air to flood the senses.

GOLDFADEN MD DOCTOR’S SCRUB

100ml, £12.99

£17.50, 100g

£65, 100ml

This unique combination of intensive virgin coconut and argan oil conditioners delivers an instant transformation, leaving your hair shiny and manageable, and smelling good enough to eat! It’s the only beauty product to combine organic coconut and argan oils together, and contains key nutrients including lauric acid, capric acid and caprillic acid, which possess excellent antibacterial properties. It’s the perfect way to combat all kinds of damaged or dry hair and can also be used to treat dandruff.

Containing aloe vera, natural glycerin and castor oil, this solid shampoo bar is traditionally made using the cold saponification process, which is unique to soaps comprising 100% natural ingredients (only 1% of soaps on the market are made in this authentic way). It gently cleanses your hair, leaving it hydrated and full of vitality. Formulated without parabens, silicones and SLS, and 100% vegan, it’s a completely new experience for your hair that takes a little getting used to. Hair won’t feel silky after rinsing because it is no longer coated in silicones, but stick with it and your hair will thank you!

Dr Goldfaden’s coveted exfoliator contains powerful ruby crystals instead of microbeads, which provide immediate cell renewal by polishing away dead surface cells, leaving skin brighter, clearer and younger-looking. Daily use improves the appearance of fine lines, reduces pore size, and leaves you with a healthy, radiant complexion. This deep penetrating exfoliating treatment allows for post treatment products, such as anti-aging serums, to better penetrate deeper into the skin, enhancing overall treatment results.
