FANUS: THE SYMBOL OF LIGHT AND TRADITION DURING RAMADAN

During the holy month of Ramadan, streets and homes across the Muslim world are adorned with a myriad of lights and decorations that symbolize the spiritual and communal essence of this sacred time. Among these enchanting elements, one stands out as a timeless symbol of light and tradition: the Fanus.
Derived from the Greek word meaning “light” or “torch,” the Fanus has a history that traces back to the ancient valley of the Nile and the Fatimid Empire. Originally handcrafted from metal and adorned with intricate designs, often featuring Arabic calligraphy, the Fanus was primarily a source of light in ancient Egypt. Over the centuries, this beautiful tradition has been embraced and celebrated during Ramadan, becoming an integral part of the festivities.

The Journey of Fanus Across Continents
The Fanus’ journey is a testament to its enduring appeal and significance. From the bustling markets of Cairo to the serene streets of Istanbul and down to the Far East, this radiant lantern has traveled across continents, bringing its shimmering light to various cultures and communities. Its presence is not just a visual delight but also a symbol of unity and shared heritage.
During Ramadan, the Fanus lights up streets, homes, and public spaces, creating a magical and enchanting atmosphere. The soft, warm glow of the lanterns adds a sense of tranquility and reverence, making the nights of Ramadan even more special. The tradition of lighting Fanus has transcended borders, making its way to shining festivities and culturally celebrated occasions in different parts of the world.

Craftsmanship
The beauty of the Fanus lies in its craftsmanship and design. Traditionally, these lanterns were made from metal and decorated with unique patterns and calligraphy. The designs often reflect the rich cultural heritage and artistic traditions of the regions where they are crafted. Each Fanus is a work of art, meticulously created by
skilled artisans who pour their heart and soul into their craft. Over time, the materials used to make Fanus have evolved. Today, fanus come in a variety of materials, such as wood and paper, each possessing a unique charm. Despite the changes in materials, the essence of the Fanus remains the same: to shine its light and bring joy to people.
A Universal Symbol of Light
The Fanus has been adopted by various cultures, each adding its own unique touch to this beloved tradition. Whether it’s the ornate metal lanterns of Cairo, the colorful wooden Fanus of Morocco, or the delicate paper lanterns of Indonesia, the purpose of the Fanus remains unchanged. It serves as a universal symbol of light, hope, and togetherness. During

Ramadan, the Fanus is more than just a decorative item; it embodies the spirit of the holy month. The light it emits represents guidance, spiritual illumination, and the warmth of community. As families gather to break their fast and share meals, the presence of the Fanus adds to the festive and communal atmosphere, reminding everyone of the more profound meanings of Ramadan.
Lighting Up Lives
Fanus has a magical quality that transforms ordinary spaces into realms of enchantment. Its soft glow creates an ambiance of peace and serenity, making it a cherished part of Ramadan celebrations. From homes to public squares, the sight of Fanus lighting up the night is a heartwarming reminder of the beauty and richness of this ancient tradition.

Editor’s note: Fanus is a symbol of light that transcends time and borders. CONCIERGE

Mark D. Nadonza
The Ritz-Carlton Bahrain Concierge Manager
What was the most memorable guest you have ever fulfilled?
A guest forgot his formal shoes early in the morning. I lent him my wedding shoes, as we had the same size. I later retrieved his shoes and ensured he had a successful meeting. The guest
was delighted and amazed by the personal touch. I was the first Ritz-Carlton Bahrain employee featured in the Gold Standard Book.
What was the most challenging you encountered as Concierge?
Being a Concierge requires saying “No” is not an option, but requests must align with moral, ethical, and legal standards, and Ritz-Carlton’s core values. One memorable request involved a European guest wanting to propose in the desert at night, requiring creativity and careful planning. It became an unforgettable moment for the couple, highlighting the reward of going the extra mile to create extraordinary experiences..
What is your favorite place to visit Bahrain, or top tourist site you recommend, and what makes it stand out for you? My favorite place in Bahrain is the
Bahrain Fort (Qal’at al-Bahrain), a UNESCO World Heritage site. It provides a fascinating glimpse into Bahrain’s rich history from the Dilmun civilization to the Islamic period. The fort offers stunning views of the surrounding area and the Arabian Gulf.
What is the secret of an amazing Concierge?
The secret to being an exceptional concierge lies in confidence, integrity, and a willingness to take risks while respecting others. They provide thoughtful, personalized experiences backed by world-class standards, such as those of Les Clefs d’Or. An amazing concierge navigates challenges with a strong moral compass and respect, ensuring every guest’s needs are met with excellence, trust, and reliability. Their unwavering commitment makes them truly remarkable.
Must Know
Eid al Fitr and Eid al-Adha
Eid is an Arabic word that means ‘festival’, a celebration to mark two major holidays in Islam. Eid al Fitr (trans. Festival of Breaking of the Fast) is celebrated at the end of the Holy month of Ramadan, a month when Muslims fast during the daylight hours. Eid al Adha (trans. Festival of the Sacrifice) commemorates the Prophet Ibrahim’s (Abraham) willingness to sacrifice his son to God. These holidays are a time for spiritual enrichment, gift giving, extravagant meals and are shared with families, friends and anyone else who wants to join in!
The Eid holidays provide all residents of the Gulf countries with long public holidays, ranging from four to seven days. On the first day most commercial establishments are closed, allowing everyone to experience the festivities. It is also peak season for both in and out bound travel, with expats heading off for long weekends and Gulf nationals flying into Bahrain to visit family and friends.

Heidiland
As a child, I was a huge fan of Heidi, the girl from the Swiss Alps. My upbringing was influenced by Heidi and her friends’ trips, which included gorgeous scenery and pleasant (and sometimes tear-jerking) experiences. A short while ago, I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to travel to Heidiland, the precise location that Johanna Spyri drew inspiration from in order to create her cherished novel.
At the same moment that I arrived, I was overcome with feelings of both exhilaration and affection for the past. It was just like what I had seen in the cartoons: the hills were undulating, the meadows were lush, and the chalets were attractive. While I was strolling through the picturesque village, I had the impression that I was in Heidi’s world. As Heidi reflected on the beauty and simplicity of her life, the surrounding countryside, with its beautiful vistas of the
Alps, served as the ideal backdrop for her contemplation.
Having arrived to this location, I couldn’t help but feel a profound connection to Heidi, Peter, Lolo Alp, and the adventures that they were having. All of the elements, including the crisp mountain air and the colorful wildflowers, added to a feeling of contentment and relief. On the other hand, I found myself missing the ringing of goat bells.

OUTBOUND
On my trip to Heidiland, I experienced more than simply a vacation; it was a trip that took me back to my childhood. When I thought about it, I was reminded of the enduring grandeur of the Swiss Alps as well as the ageless attractiveness of Heidi’s story. My heart was filled with memories, and I left with a greater understanding for the power that lies within the art of storytelling.

As a child, I was completely captivated by the tale of Heidi, the spirited girl from the Swiss Alps. Her adventures, set against the backdrop of breathtaking landscapes and filled with heartwarming (and occasionally heartbreaking) moments, profoundly shaped my childhood. The verdant meadows, the towering mountains, and the simple joys of her life resonated deeply within me. So, when the opportunity arose to visit Heidiland, the very place that inspired Johanna Spyri’s beloved novel, I felt an almost overwhelming sense of anticipation.
The moment I stepped onto the soil of Heidiland, a wave of nostalgia washed over me, intertwined with an exhilarating sense of wonder. It was as if the animated world I had cherished as a child had materialized before my eyes. The rolling hills, the lush meadows dotted with vibrant wildflowers, and the charming chalets nestled amidst the scenery were precisely as I had imagined. Strolling through the quaint village, I felt transported into Heidi’s
world, a world of simplicity and natural beauty. The majestic Alpine vistas that surrounded me mirrored the descriptions in the book, providing the perfect canvas for Heidi’s introspective moments, as she contemplated the beauty and simplicity of her life.
Being in Heidiland evoked a deep connection with the characters I had grown to love – Heidi, Peter, Grandfather Alp, and their shared
adventures. The crisp, invigorating mountain air, the vibrant hues of the wildflowers, and the tranquil atmosphere all contributed to a sense of peace and contentment. It was a tangible experience of the serenity that Heidi found in her mountain home. I did, however, find myself longing for the gentle clanging of goat bells, a sound that would have completed the immersive experience.

My journey to Heidiland was more than just a vacation; it was a pilgrimage back to the cherished memories of my childhood. The experience served as a potent reminder of the enduring magnificence of the Swiss Alps and the timeless appeal of Heidi’s story. It was a journey that filled my heart with nostalgia and left me with a renewed
appreciation for the power of storytelling to transport us to other worlds and connect us to our own past. The enduring impact of a simple tale, set against such stunning scenery, was profoundly evident, and I left Heidiland with a deeper understanding of how stories can shape our perceptions and leave lasting impressions on our souls.

His Majesty King Hamad Bin Isa Al Khalifa
His Highness Sheikh Isa bin Salman Al Khalifa
The late Amir of Bahrain
