Bahrain History which first attracted explorers over 2000 years ago. The numerous settlements throughout the millennia can now be seen in the rich archaeological sites around the Island. The springs also encouraged the most lustrous of pearls – the trade which helped build the Island’s early fortunes. One of the most notable features of the archaeological heritage of Bahrain are the numerous burial mounds, sometime labeled as the world’s largest ancient cemetery, which are scattered over a wide area of Bahrain.

Stories passed on from the time of the Sumerians mentioned a settlement in the deserts of the Middle East - an oasis of life flowing with sweet water springs. It has been suggested that the legendary verdant island may have been the inspiration for the Garden of Eden, described as “Paradise” in the world’s oldest poetic saga - The Epic of Gilgamesh. “The Sacred Land” or the “Land of Eternal Life”, previously known as ‘Dilmun’, is now known as the Kingdom of Bahrain. Early explorers also knew Bahrain as the “Island of a million palm trees”. At least twenty-three varieties of dates were grown on the Island and the leaves, branches, buds and flowers of the date palm were all used extensively. As a result of this bounty, Bahrain had its first natural export. Only Bahrain can claim a truly integral connection with the sweet-water springs that bubble off-shore, water 8

Despite modernization and a cosmopolitan outlook, Bahrain is a unique land with fascinating culture that spans many centuries. A sense of history is tangible even today when you explore the Island’s imposing forts and atmospheric streets, or stroll through its bustling market areas and admire its many magnificent examples of Islamic architecture. While you explore, you are sure to come across another of Bahrain’s most traditional and attractive characteristics – its people, who are among the most welcoming, easy going, friendly and courteous you will meet anywhere in the Arabian Gulf. Welcoming Crown Plaza new Chef Pramod Bijalwan Uttarkhand, India

A little bit of your background and journey of pursuing this profession. Chef Pramod, was born and brought up in India, which is diverse and dynamic in its culture that reflects in its cuisine as well. He brings over his conspicuous passion for cooking, together with close to 10 years of culinary expertise, to Spices Indian restaurant, Bahrain. Chef Pramod came from humble beginnings and credits his success to building respect on team dynamics, as well as receiving feedback from customers. He specializes in North West frontier Indian Cuisine, Muglai Cuisine, Rajasthani Cuisine and Western fusion dishes. His greatest strengths are in authentic North Indian dishes. My cuisine reflects farm to table with twists and playfulness’ says Chef Pramod. 20

What motivated you to become a chef and who is your role model? I hail from the Indian state of Uttarakhand, specifically from the clan of Tehri Gharwal. It is a well know fact that most chef originate from this region. My father was a chef and ran his own restaurant in Delhi, so it was inevitable that I would take on this profession as well. My role model is Chef Sanjeev Kapoor, I grew up watching him on TV. What new spice or ingredient is inspiring your creativity right now? Three ingredient that I love working with are Kasuri methi (Fenugreek leaves), it is a fiercely pungent spice and has the potential to tremendously enhance a dish. Cloves, they are a pungent warm spice with an intense flavor and aroma and finally rose petal. The flavor of rose petals differs depending on which type of rose plant produced them. They can

have a floral sweetness or a tartness similar that which comes from citrus fruit. They can also be mildly spicy. They are often intensely aromatic, which is the quality that is most valuable for cooking. What is your favorite piece of kitchen tool? The Tandoor (clay pot oven) It adds a huge amount of flavour to the food we cook in it. A true icon of Indian cuisine, the tandoor is part barbecue, part oven and is used to cook everything from pillowy naan breads to beautifully smoky and charred kebabs. Your favorite local Bahraini dish. Ghouzi which is similar to Biryani. And Harees, we also make in India but slightly different, so am very curious to see the different angle of preparation. (MfB)

The Lazy Lunch

at Legendz Steak House

A memorable lunch with family or friends’ attributes to great food, eye-catching ambience and fabulous company. Picking the right restaurant after a long stressful work is always important especially when the destination is easily accessible in Manama (ample parking is a definitely a plus). So, here we are driving to Intercontinental Regency Bahrain Hotel to experience a unique lazy lunch perfect for families. Enter Legendz Steak House and we were welcomed by friendly staff, encouraging us to relax while giving us recommendations of the bestsellers from starters to main course. 22

The ‘lazy lunch’ concept is a better version of a hearty brunch where you don’t need to walk around to pick your food, instead you will be served as per your selection from the special menu of the day and get ready for a mouth-watering steak that melts in your mouth. The food variety is so rich, perfectly plated and for us, the best part was the minimal food waste. A bright and cozy atmosphere with relaxing music, making conversation fun and relaxing. Executive sous chef, Mohammed Samara was ready to keep our table busy including our young guests who loved every option

in the kids’ menu including special kids’ meal personally prepared by Executive Sous Chef Mohammed Samara, himself. Legendz Steak house is indeed an award winning restaurant, well acclaimed for top quality meat seasoned with fresh herbs. Without a doubt, if children enjoyed every bite with thumbs up rating and a mouth full, the whole family can certainly be delighted for a lavish meal and great service. Marhaba highly recommends the Lazy Lunch for family outings or even a simple appreciation lunch with your loved ones.

What brought you to Bahrain? After retiring from ADNOC in Abu Dhabi, I was offered to join this nonprofit Gulf Downstream Association (GDA). This role required a great deal of coordination between all the downstream players to promote sharing of knowledge and experience. I considered this a great opportunity to serve a greater cause and landed in Bahrain.

How do you find Bahrain as your second home? Love it! The locals are welcoming, and it’s easy to make a life here. Everything is more relaxed for me compared to living in New Zealand.

When you arrived to the island what was your first impression? Wow and here is why. I had only heard great things about the people of Bahrain, so when I decided to move here, I had high expectations. My expectations exceeded from the moment I arrived at the passport control, with the welcoming way that the officer treated me. Same experience continues.

When you arrived to the island what was your first impression? Looking out of the flight window in the night while approaching Bahrain, I saw a constellation of dazzling lights on the earth. I immediately fell in love with this small island, which later turned out to be the most friendly and easy going place to live in. Favorite places in Bahrain? My most favourite place is the Dohat Arad Park and lagoon, where I regularly go for my evening walk. Second is the Bab Al Bahrain which is always pulsating with vibrant lives. 52

What surprises you the longer you stay on the island? How diverse yet tolerant people are. Favorite places in Bahrain? Reza’s Martial Arts Centre (RMAC) and Training For Warrior’s (TFW) gym are my favorite places to go to burn energy. Both places make you feel welcome as soon as you walk in. Hawar Island, because I love nature, and the landscape is actually full of surprises once you look more closely. One of my hobbies is salsa, so Sajad’s midweek dance classes at Meisei and McGettigan’s are great.

How do you find Bahrain as your second home? What I used to enjoy back in London are here too, but without the hassle of ‘the big city’. For sure I miss my family and friends who are back home but I feel at home nevertheless and my family feels the same when they visit. What surprises you the longer you stay on the island? The number of places to see and go to as well as the appetite for art and creativity. Local and expats work in harmony in most walks of life. Bahrain is a small island with big (great) secrets. I have a long “to do list”.
