Bahrain History which first attracted explorers over 2000 years ago. The numerous settlements throughout the millennia can now be seen in the rich archaeological sites around the Island. The springs also encouraged the most lustrous of pearls – the trade which helped build the Island’s early fortunes. One of the most notable features of the archaeological heritage of Bahrain are the numerous burial mounds, sometime labeled as the world’s largest ancient cemetery, which are scattered over a wide area of Bahrain.

Stories passed on from the time of the Sumerians mentioned a settlement in the deserts of the Middle East - an oasis of life flowing with sweet water springs. It has been suggested that the legendary verdant island may have been the inspiration for the Garden of Eden, described as “Paradise” in the world’s oldest poetic saga - The Epic of Gilgamesh. “The Sacred Land” or the “Land of Eternal Life”, previously known as ‘Dilmun’, is now known as the Kingdom of Bahrain. Early explorers also knew Bahrain as the “Island of a million palm trees”. At least twenty-three varieties of dates were grown on the Island and the leaves, branches, buds and flowers of the date palm were all used extensively. As a result of this bounty, Bahrain had its first natural export. Only Bahrain can claim a truly integral connection with the sweet-water springs that bubble off-shore, water 8

Despite modernization and a cosmopolitan outlook, Bahrain is a unique land with fascinating culture that spans many centuries. A sense of history is tangible even today when you explore the Island’s imposing forts and atmospheric streets, or stroll through its bustling market areas and admire its many magnificent examples of Islamic architecture. While you explore, you are sure to come across another of Bahrain’s most traditional and attractive characteristics – its people, who are among the most welcoming, easy going, friendly and courteous you will meet anywhere in the Arabian Gulf. The Spaces In Between In this hectic, technology-driven world of today, it is easy to get caught up in the rush of our everyday lives. Life is speeding up, we are trying to cram so many things into our days, that we are forgetting how to simply enjoy the present moment. We have forgotten how to take time out to observe the beauty of the world – the spaces in between our sometimes mundane lives that are focused on earning a living, chasing after material possessions, the increasing chore of keeping up with social media, trying not to get left behind in the mad scramble to survive and striving to better ourselves. 16

ZEKI OZAL

General Manager Jumeirah Royal Saray With Jumeirah Group opening its first Bahrain hotel, Jumeirah Royal Saray, inspired by traditional Bahraini summerhouses, under the leadership of General Manager, Mr. Zeki Ozal, hopes to soon become the ideal weekend getaway for both visitors and residents What are the challenges you face when transferring from one country’s property to another? Having worked in many countries, transferring has somewhat become a norm for me. I always take the time to get to know the people, business and the country I am in. Knowing the language is of course an added benefit which makes life easier. How do you analyze the current hospitality market in Bahrain? There is a huge potential for a great leap for the hospitality sector, which can only be achieved by all stake holders of government or private sector. An influx of travelers will mean more hotel rooms, thus increasing the volume and diversifying the segments. One might even argue

that there currently is an oversupply of rooms, which is required when a holistic approach is taken. Your favorite part of the job: Wherever I work, there are two satisfying points in my job- when I see guests having an enjoyable experience and witnessing colleagues grow professionally. I have seen many guests frequenting hotels, I have worked at and I cherish the relationships we build.

from New York. The opening of our ballroom, the all-new venue for special events. The talk of the town will be the launch of the remaining Royal Residences. We will continue to offer new experiences with the completion of the resort’s second phase- remarkable summer mansions of luxurious design.

Your future long-term plans: We have many ongoing projects in Jumeirah Royal Saray, one being the opening of Brasserie Royale where guests can enjoy all-day dining in brasserie style. Black Tap, our gourmet burger restaurant concept 17

Exclusive interview with

Hameed Salman Al Hussien Rabia Chairman of Dragon Resort Hotel Overlooking the calm waters of the Arabian Sea, sits the very first resort hotel in Amwaj Island, The Dragon Resort Hotel. Our Marhaba editor got a chance to have the very first exclusive and inspiring interview with the man responsible in managing the Dragon Resort Hotel. Taking over the management has been a huge step in Hameed’s career with the hospitality industry. “My journey has been a cautious and calculated one. I learnt to take one step at a time when it comes to the daily business decisions. My main investment is the people around me I wish to help them grow in their career as well as help grow with the property we have now.” As we all know, competition keeps growing within the island, local and expat investors are sharing the same inflow as that of the visitors. The rise in the number of branded properties being established is undoubtedly 18

a challenge that makes the service industry more vigilant in keeping up with the latest trends and features in order to maintain customer loyalty. Hameed sees the beauty and the unique character of his cluster property from the hotel, the villas and the chalets, as well as the recognised, Yamin Jana restaurant, the Mediterranean lounge which opened doors to Hameed as a restaurateur. The cluster property is gifted with a stunning sea view having its own beach area which plays a huge advantage to the hotel

in addition to the spacious suite style room featuring spectacular views. 2019 will be the year of new beginnings, many launches that will attract many families from our neighbouring countries “On behalf of the whole team (from the management to the staff), we look forward in welcoming you to Dragon Resort Hotel and Sealoft Chalets. “Human interaction comes first in hospitality. That is why we, at Gulf Hotel serve our customers from the heart.” Charbel Hanna,

Deputy General Manager of The Gulf Hotel “The Gulf Hotel has proven its presence in the Kingdom of Bahrain as we celebrate our 50th anniversary this year and I am very thankful for the trust and support of the Management in appointing me as DGM. I say challenge accepted with all my heart”, a humble statement from Charbel. Old fashioned hospitality tends to be formal – surely the manuals create the standard of service but does not mention the connection or emotion required to be incorporated with service. Charbel, with his unique methods of service, goes beyond the norms of hospitality manuals. Having a strong connection with nature, Charbel loves a simple life on a farm, with his family, wife Georgette and two children Cyrine and Anthony with his Arabaian horses, Deft (mom) and Valentino (a colt). One of the youngest to be in his position truly gives him a distinct opportunity to lead. Being a target oriented individual, he believes that reaching a goal is not how long it takes but how efficiently the goal is achieved. Charbel’s message to his team and MfB readers; “If you want to do something, do it with passion.” My passion in hospitality began watching my mother’s talented cooking skills and I never stopped chasing it since. I started from the ground level as a steward washing pots and pans and slowly worked up the ladder until I got the chance to develop my skills in management. The lessons, career tools, opportunities all helped me reach where I am now. Having an F&B background opened doors to playing a main role in this industry. Guest satisfaction is the main priority of the hospitality industry. Food, ambiance and service are the tree main reasons why people comes back for more. Service that creates a cherished memory, lavish atmosphere, authentic food and a passionate team are important in creating a relationship with a guest. 21

Island Buzz

Spring time for the great outdoors Spring time in Bahrain is such a perfect season where every resident takes in the the season of flowera. Now that the schools are up for spring break, it is time to get outdoors more and enjoy the almost blue sky and the nearly bright sun. There’s nothing more lovely than spring in the Kingdom. So, grab your family and friends and enjoy the lovely outdoors before the heat comes raging in. There are a number of outdoor activities that you could choose from. With winds during some parts of the day, the craze for outdoor activities like kite flying and wind surfing tends to take over the island during this time of the year.

Horse riding is a fascination all over the island. There are even weekly gatherings where hundreds of horses meet their ‘lone ranger’ riders. The recent trend is bike riding. It has gained quite a popularity with different groups riding out in the early mornings or before sunset.

Island Buzz

Fishing or crabbing is a year round activity, but the cool weather is especially preferrable for those with an interest in fishing, giving them the chance to relax outdoors while having the chance to get a pretty good catch for the day.

Then there is always the walk in the park or by the beach. An evening walk is the best time to catch stunning sunset or simply admire the lovely skyline.

Camping is a fun and traditional outdoor activity, as we have described in our past issue as ‘Glamping’, which stands for Glamourous Camping. 33

CREATING FUNCTIONAL ART WITH WOOD

An Interview with Artist,

Ali Mashhadi

It is more than just a regular piece of wood to Bahrain born, 33 year old artist, Ali Mashhadi. To him, it is an art piece with interesting colours, stripes or even figures that inspires him to create handmade wooden functional art that are both uniquely picturesque as well as practical in today’s lifestyle. Marhaba magazine with Ali Mashaddi creative journey How long have you been an artist? My love and fascination for wood art began when I was a child, 12 years old to be exact. This passion only grew more as I grew older, which led me to pursue my dream for wood crafting. Over the years, I have created exquisite pieces of art, décor and unique custom-made furniture. Who motivated you towards this unique area of art? From an early age, my father taught me how each piece can be used for creativity. He would mentor me in the craft of welding, wood crafting as well as painting. 34

Though he passed away in 2015, his teachings and legacy continue to inspire me in creating any piece of art. An artwork you created that you really love: I would have to say that the lidded bowl and carved pen are amongst my favourite pieces I have created till date. What do you hope to achieve in the coming years? I dream of one day being able to teach wood turning and other traditional arts in Bahrain.

Other than wood crafting, what other hobbies fascinate you? I love fishing or anything to do with the water. I am an avid kayak fisher and a free diver. When I’m not creating art or adoring the water, I enjoy singing, strumming the guitar and playing the harmonica. What would you like to tell new, aspiring artists? Your time is precious. Dedicate your time reading, growing gracefully and acquiring knowledge.

Home Away From Home By Claudia Hardt

What brought you to Bahrain? I was approached by a recruitment company looking to fill a vacancy in Bahrain. My wife and I came for a few days to explore the island, and as the job was subsequently offered, we felt Bahrain would be a wonderful experience.

Your first impression of Bahrain: It got bigger! We lived here until 2008. Places like Amwaj, Reef Island and Durrat Al Bahrain did not exist then. The skyline changed, the roads got better with new places to enjoy. It is impressive what they have done in 10 years.

What brought you to Bahrain? Change of employment. I moved to Bahrain from Dubai where I lived for quite a number of years. At that time, I felt I could do with a change and a new challenge.

How do you feel with Bahrain as your second home? Despite the fact that we will have to leave one day, it is home. Living with many different nationalities is a marvellous experience. We have a far better understanding of their way of life than if we had remained in the UK. What factor of Bahrain surprises you? The way art plays a huge role in the local culture and enjoys considerable support in Bahrain. I hope other countries follow suit. Art is an important part of humanity. Without it, we would have no movies, TV, books, music, paintings etc. How boring would life be then?

What factor of Bahrain surprises you? The hospitality and friendliness of the locals. How easy it is for people from different cultures and faiths mingle whilst respecting each other. Also, how quickly you get used to extreme temperatures. 25°C feels cold one year in the Middle East. Favorite places in Bahrain: Any place with a night sky view, the National Museum and the beach at sunset - there’s no other place with light like this on the island.

When you arrived to the island what was your first impression? I have visited Bahrain many times in the past, for work and I always felt at home here. However, when we moved here, the one thing I found endearing was the warmth of the people – right from the airport staff. Favourite places in Bahrain? I am still exploring Bahrain, so it is too early to state favourites. Being a foodie, I find the choice of cuisines in Bahrain very interesting. So Block 338 was on my favourites list almost immediately.
