Theme: “We have this hope as an Anchor for the soul…”

Hebrews 6:19
Thursday Night Service Guest Speaker

Shorter AME Church, Denver Colorado

Hebrews 6:19 “We have this hope as an anchor for the soul….”
Focus on “Evangelism in these times”
Hebrews 6:17-20 17 Because God wanted to make the unchanging nature of his purpose very clear to the heirs of what was promised, he confirmed it with an oath. 18 God did this so that, by two unchangeable things in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled to take hold of the hope set before us may be greatly encouraged. 19 We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain, 20 where our forerunner, Jesus, has entered on our behalf. He has become a high priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek.
Last year our District Conference dealt with evangelism in the age of Technology. This year our goal is to assist pastors and churches in dealing with an issue that has plagued church growth and wreaked havoc on ministries. That is a sense of Apathy among our church members and the Christian community.
What has caused this Apathy, you might ask? Several things in our environment have moved us to this situation. The internet is a wonderful thing, giving us a platform to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior however, it is also a platform for every idea, religion, or philosophy under the sun without a filter. It often leaves our people in doubt about our faith and is situationally ethical.
Our people are having difficulty determining why our religion is better or worse than other religions worldwide. Even in Christianity itself, there is so much division that some Christians argue over how we Baptize or give Communion and even the very nature of God. We argue over conservatism as opposed to liberalism, and while God is not divided, we, who claim to be His church, seem to be.
While these issues that seem to divide us are important, are they more important than the words of the Master in Matthew 22: 37- 40 37 Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’[c] 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’[d] 40 All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”(NIV)
We must remember that we have a savior whose blood paid the price for our past, present, and future sins! So in this conference, we will return to Christianity's basics to remind us of the great gift of propitiation and satisfaction for the sins of the whole world! Jesus, the anchor of our hope!

The Reverend Marcus Toure Bonner McCullough hails from Seattle, Washington, and is a son of First African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church of Seattle (FAME). Currently, Rev. Marcus is a staff chaplain at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, Massachusetts, where he provides spiritual care to patients and families, particularly those in the trauma, surgical, and intensive care units. Hospital chaplaincy is also near and dear to Rev. Marcus’ heart. He is a board-certified chaplain (BCC) through the Association of Professional Chaplains (APC). He spent six years on staff as a per diem chaplain at Boston’s Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), just over two years as staff chaplain at Springfield’s Mercy Medical Center (MMC), and currently works at Baystate Medical Center (BMC) in Springfield.
For Rev. Marcus, education has been critical to his life and ministry. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in religion with a minor in political science from Morehouse College, Atlanta, Georgia He then attended Harvard Divinity School (HDS) and received, with honors, a Master of Divinity (MDiv) degree.
More than anything, Rev. Marcus desires to be a faithful, authentic, helpful servant-leader. The son of the Honorable LeRoy and the late Brenda Joyce Bonner McCullough, he believes in educational excellence, community connection, sincere service, and a genuine relationship with our redeeming God. A quote that has inspired him says, “When you were born, you cried and the world rejoiced. Live your life in such a way that when you die, the world cries and you rejoice.”
