A SEASON OF PRAISE AND THANKSGIVING
REV. SPENCER BARRETT, PRESIDING ELDER FIRST LADY MARY BARRETT
For a Season of Praise and Thanksgiving
The old hymn, with lyrics penned by Jennie Wilson and the tune supplied by F.L. Eiland, is a favorite of many for its simple but powerful truths of reassurance, hope, and constancy. “Time is filled with swift transition; Naught of earth unmoved can stand. Build your hopes on things eternal; Hold to God’s unchanging hand. Trust in Him who will not leave you, Whatsoever years may bring; If by earthly friends forsaken, Still more closely to Him cling. Covet not this world’s vain riches, That so rapidly decay. Seek to gain the heavenly treasures; They will never pass away. When your journey is completed, If to God you have been true, Fair, and bright the home in glory your enraptured soul will view. Hold to God’s unchanging hand! Hold to God’s unchanging hand! Build your hopes on things eternal; Hold to God’s unchanging hand!”
Phillip Brown writes in his June 10, 2020, article titled “Time is Filled with Swift Transition...” Though I am sure that these words rang true in 1904, our current world is certainly no exception to them. Everything seems to change dramatically with each evening’s sinking twilight and each dawn’s new day. What was “true” and “normal” yesterday vanished like vapor and was replaced with “new truths” and “new normal” today. Indeed, the “transitions” are “swift” and striking.
With these transitions come new opportunities to proclaim God’s word to everyone who will hear! We are preparing for a new Bishop and a new quadrennial to build God’s Kingdom through the preaching of the Gospel and the discipleship of our church members. The anticipation of a new thing is almost overwhelming, yet we must focus on the work at hand.
Over half of our churches have less than fifty members, and they struggle to do ministry in their communities. The Gospel message that should be changing lives is only being heard by a few faithful members of our churches. The church organizations and the Discipline have become more important than the spreading of the Gospel and discipleship.
It is time to embrace our changing times and go back to our reimagined basics of prayer, bible study, and Christian relationships, as well as to develop each of these in a contemporary light. Our first objective is to coordinate our prayer calls so that we can access communal prayer anytime, day or night. Our second objective is to launch youth outreach ministries in every church and community where our churches exist. Our third objective is to minister to our various age groups within our churches and communities. This includes young adults and families, single people of all ages, senior citizens, and those who are sick and shut-in. These objectives must be developed to meet the needs of each individual church.
If we focus on these three objectives, then we will get closer to our goal of spreading the Gospel of Jesus Christ to all who will hear during these changing times. It is my prayer that the workshops and worship services will encourage us to embrace these goals and objectives as a conference and implement them in every ministry as we grow in Christ together.

Reverend “J” Edgar Boyd, Retired Pastor
First African Methodist Episcopal Church of Los Angeles Pastor “J” Edgar Boyd served as the Sr. minister of the 152-yearold First African Methodist Episcopal Church of Los Angeles (FAME), from 2012 – 2023. The FAME Congregation manages an extensive Community Development Ministry, comprising 320 Low Income Housing Units, and three other Community Development Corporations managing an income, in excess of fifteen million dollars annually.
Assigned to the church in 2012, Pastor Boyd leads the congregation consisting of approximately ten thousand members, as he emphasizes Biblically based spiritual practices, stewardship, congregational involvement, appropriate record-keeping, fiscal controls and accountability and transparency in its operating procedures. In addition to ministering to the spiritual needs of the congregation, he has empowered the church’s leadership (through a commission system) to address the overall health more proactively, social and educational needs of the parishioners and the larger community.
As the Chief Executive Officer of FAME Church and its corporate institutions, he conceived the formation of the South Los Angeles Community Development and Empowerment Corporation (SLACDEC), organized to develop a collaboration with four other congregations to address social and economic issues impacting a 32 square mile area of South Los Angeles. As a strong community leader, Pastor Boyd demonstrates leadership in programs which impact the welfare of transitional age youth within the foster care system, law enforcement relations within diverse communities, K-12 education, and economic empowerment.
Prior to his assignment at FAME Church, he served as Pastor of the historic Bethel A.M.E. Church in San Francisco, CA for 20 years. While there, he led the congregation in the extension of a housing and community development ministry which substantially increased the value of the church’s portfolio of assets, by more than one hundred and fifty million dollars. With his understanding of the concept of affordable housing in the public/private arena, Pastor Boyd led the congregation in its successful acquisition of four (4) Low Income and affordable housing communities under HUD LIHHOPA provision. During his tenure at Bethel AMEC in San Francisco, the church’s full portfolio of housing was managed with excellence and maintained full compliance with tenant expectations and each of the regulatory agencies.
He served as a member of the General Board of the African Methodist Episcopal Church, Inc. for 31 years, and as Treasurer of the denomination’s 5th Episcopal District for 16 years. Academically, he has earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Community Development from Western Washington University, Bellingham, WA; a Master of Divinity degree from the University of Dubuque Theological Seminary in Iowa; and he has completed extensive studies in the Doctor of Ministry degree program at the American Baptist Seminary of the West in Berkeley, California.
He is married to Florence Miles-Boyd, and together, they are parents to four adult children. Pastor J Edgar Boyd retired for active itinerant ministry in the AME Church, October 2023.

Minister: I was glad when they said unto me, let us go into the house of the Lord, our feet shall stand within thy Gates, O Jerusalem.
People: For a day in thy courts is better than a thousand, I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than to dwell in the tents of wickedness.
Minister: Because of the house of the Lord our God I will seek thy good.
People: Those that be planted in the house of the Lord, shall flourish in the courts of our God.
Minister: Blessed are they that dwell in thy house. Lord, I have loved thy habitation, the place where they honor dwelleth.
People: For the Lord is in his holy temple; let all the earth keep silence before him.
Minister: Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart; be acceptable in thy sight, O Lord, my strength and my Redeemer.
People: O sing to the Lord a new song, for he has done marvelous things. Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all the earth sings praises.
