Abandoned Farm Rehabilitation Proposal

This project aims at creating an architectural rehabilitation proposal for an Abandoned farm by the name of Al-Mashrou near Jericho, Palestine. In this class project, we decided to re-use and add some buildings to accomodate four extra programs: a children’s summer camp, women’s agricultural training center (WATC), tourist resort, and an artists residency. My group’s contribution was the design of the programs and the buildings used. All of the following drawings and visualizations are my own.

Added Buildings Re-used Buildings

This parking lot is meant to accomodate all of the guests that will be coming to the farm. Farm workers, the women trainees, the artists, tourists, and the children’s families.

Reception and Restaurant

This set of buildings include the reception for the tourism program, and a restaurant for everyone to enjoy. This restaurant will be ran by the WATC, which will help them gain an income, preserve their culture through culinary arts, and use their own produce.

Art Gallery & Market

This set of buildings will be used as an art gallery that will exhibit work from the artists in the artists residency and others. They will also be used for merchants to set up small shops there. These shops could sell products like clothing and souvenirs to the tourists.

Clinic

This is a clinic that will be available to everyone on the farm.

These buildings will be used for artists to come and stay in.

Classrooms

These buildings will be used as classrooms for the children’s summer camp. In here, children will be a variety of subjects to make the camp both productive and fun.

Assembly Area

This shaded area will be used as an an assembly area for the children’s summer camp.

Boys Dormitory & Bathroom

The big semi-circle shaped building is a boys dormitory. The second building beside it is a bathroom for them to children to use.

Sports Fields/Courts

This area includes a massive football field, two basketball courts, as well as multiple shaded seats. This area may be accessed by anyone.

Girls Dormitory

This building is going to be used for the girls dormitories. It is shaded on the inside, and each room includes it own bathroom. This building may also be used by other types of guests when the summer camp is not active.

Kitchen

This area will be used as a kitchen for the WATC to prepare and package produce and food to sell outside of the farm itself. This will also help the WATC gain an income.

Cafeteria

This is a cafeteria that could be used by everyone at the farm.

Water Treatment Plant

This plant will help recycle the water that is being used in the farm. Through a series of tubes, it will be connected to all of the buildings on the farm, collecting as much water as possible. This was necessary since the farm is located in a dry area.

Convenience Store

These buildings will have a few convenience stores, coffee shops, dessert shops, and bathrooms. This will help attract more people to the farm.

WATC Reception & Changing Room

One of the buildings will be used as a reception for the WATC, while the other as a changing room for the women trainees.

Compost Managment Facility

This facility will turn compost produced in the farm into fertilizer. This facilities helps the farm become sustainable.

Study Center

This project is my proposed design for a study center at the University of Toronto. This was done as part of a studio course. In this course, we were given this site and were told to design a study center based on a singular word. The word that I chose was ‘hierarchy’. The way that I expressed this word architecturally was by creating spatial hierarchy both on the horizontal and vertical plane. As demonstrated in the concept diagram below, I created the horizontal planes based on a vertical hierarchy, and vice versa with the vertical planes as well. I then assigned a purpose for every room

Jane and Finch Community Space

This project is a community space in Jane and Finch. This space is meant to be used as a seating area, and as a stage for artists and community members to use and engage with. I was in the group responsible for making the two seating pavilions shown above. Our entire group, including myself, took part in the design, the woodworking, and the building of those two pavilions.

This project required many different abilities. We used our creative abilities to come up with the design concept, our technical drawing abilities to produce technical drawings that can later be used while dealing with the woodworking and construction aspect of this project. We also used our financial and engineering skills to come up with an affordable and buildable design. Last but not least, we relied on our teamworking and cooperation skills to design and build this structure.

After many iterations, our group came decided on a design concept based on the idea that these pavilions should reflect the vibrant envrionment of this space. We believed that this would be best expressed through a wave-like pattern across the facade of the pavilion.
