In this issue, our star is the KIA Stinger, a car that broke the dominance in the world of performance sedans. In Qatar, we test drive the Mercedes-AMG GLE43, a family crossover having enough power when you need it. Another experience was with the Chevrolet Tahoe RST, a spacious SUV with a powerful engine. In the news, the battle for the fastest SUV seems to continue as Bentley launches the Bentayga Speed, the world’s fastest SUV. Talking about speed and SUVs, Maserati recently launched the Levante Trofeo in Qatar fitted with the strongest Maserati V8-engine ever (Road Legal Cars of course) and it gave the fans an opportunity to drive it at the Losail International Circuit during an exclusive track day. We are working day and night in preparation for Qatar Car of the Year special edition and we are glad we just released our first luxury lifestyle supplement “DUNES”

Enjoy the issue,

HYUNDAI MOTORSPORT TARGETS TITLES IN 2019 FIA WORLD RALLY CHAMPIONSHIP

H

yundai Motorsport has outlined its intentions to compete once again at the very forefront of the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC), with its sights set firmly on the manufacturers’ and drivers’ titles. Skyline Automotive W.L.L., is the official distribution partner of the Hyundai Motor Company and its luxury brand Genesis in the State of Qatar. The team finished as runners-up in 2018, for the third time in a row, having taken the title fight down to the wire. In one of the closest, most hotly contested seasons in recent years, a three-way battle was only concluded at the season finale in Australia. Led by a new Team Director, Andrea Adamo, running a revised crew line-up that includes nine-time WRC champions Sébastien Loeb and Daniel Elena as new recruits, and with an extended calendar of 14 rounds in 2019, Hyundai Motorsport will aim to revisit the competitive form that helped it score three victories and 11 podium finishes last season.

34 ISSUE 15 / maqinaonline.com

“Our objectives for WRC remain the same as they have been for the past years, namely to fight for the manufacturers’ and drivers’ titles,” said Adamo. “This is important for Hyundai and our N brand. The WRC is incredibly competitive and the other teams will want to approach the new season with the same winning mind-set. We have to make sure we’re delivering and performing at our best at all times.” With WRC’s regulations remaining stable, the team has been able to evolve the technical foundations of its rally winning Hyundai i20 Coupe WRC. All aspects of the car have been rigorously assessed in order to perform consistently across all terrains in the coming season. A brand-new event in Chile will join the existing events on the world tour. Three Hyundai i20 Coupe WRC cars will compete in each of the 14 rounds on the calendar in 2019. TOYOTA HILUX STEALS SHOW CLAIMING VICTORY AT 2019 DAKAR RALLY

F

rom the Arabian Desert, to the frozen polar wastes, Toyota’s vehicles proved themselves as trusted top performers, whatever the environment. Now it has gone further in its world-conquering achievements by claiming Toyota’s first victory in the 41st edition of the grueling Dakar Rally. GAZOO Racing South Africa’s modified Hilux led throughout ten days and more than 3,000 miles (4,828 kilometers) of harsh desert driving in Peru to claim the win in the car category. Even though the pick-up was specially adapted to deal with the challenge – including a mid-mounted V8 engine – its success is another demonstration of the reliable and hard-wearing quality of the engineering that has defined Hilux for decades. Our customers who use the Hilux for their day-today business will enjoy a versatile pick-up with built-in ruggedness that combines the essence of Toyota’s learnings from tough motorsports events with high levels of safety and comfort, making it a robust all-rounder. Toyota President Akio Toyoda commented: “I would like to sincerely thank all teams that chose Toyota for this year’s Dakar Rally. Thank you for your hard work! Nasser and I drove the winning Hilux in Spain in late 2017. At that time, the team presented me with the second-place trophy from a past event, promising me that next time they would secure the first-place trophy. I am thrilled that they were able to fulfill that promise!”

64 ISSUE 15 / maqinaonline.com

Mr. Toyoda added: “There are no proper roads in the desert! However, if cars cannot run in such harsh conditions, they are without a raison d’être. Cars must be able to run wherever drivers want to go. I believe passionately that, ‘roads make cars.’ This year and going forward, the Toyota Group as a whole will strive to continue making ‘ever-better’ cars by traversing a wide variety of roads and terrains across the world. Thank you for your continued support.” The challenges faced by the GAZOO Racing South Africa Hilux on the Dakar were exceptional, but Nasser Al Attiyah and co-driver Mathieu Baumel successfully negotiated the ten stages to seal a historic first victory for Toyota in one of the world’s toughest motorsports events. Their triumph adds to the recent impressive successes Toyota has clinched in international competitions, such as the Le Mans 24 Hours and the manufacturers’ title in the FIA World Rally Championship. Nasser Al Attiyah, who has won Dakar Rally twice previously, said: “We are so happy to win, not only for ourselves, but also for Toyota and the entire GAZOO Racing SA team. Everyone has worked so hard for so long and really deserve this. Thank you for letting us drive this car.”

NEWS

Team Principal Glyn Hall said: “This victory was long overdue. Winning the Dakar is never easy, there are a lot of people trying. This year’s race was no exception and it brought a rollercoaster of emotions and results for the team.” Since 2012, the team had posted five podium places and seven topfive finishes, whereas Al Attiyah’s win comes after a second-place result in 2018. The Hilux was also the first petrol vehicle in its class to take victory since the start of the Dakar’s South American era, being powered by a mid-mounted, normally aspirated V8. There was further success for Toyota in the event with the Team Land Cruiser Auto Body (TLC)’s #350, driven by Christian Lavieille and Jean-Pierre Garcin, winning the Dakar Production Division category for the sixth consecutive year. Meanwhile, #349, driven by Akira Miura and Laurent Lichtleuchter, secured second place in the category. Christian Lavieille said: “I feel amazing that we were able to both finish with a 1-2 finish and also get our 6th consecutive win in the Production Category. This year’s rally was incredibly difficult, we got stuck many times and had many punctures, but with our two cars working together with our mechanics providing us with perfect maintenance.

This is an amazing team and I am incredibly grateful to all of the fans that supported us.” Over the years, Toyota has been participating in many different forms of motorsports, ‎including Formula One, the World Endurance Championship (WEC), and the Nürburgring 24 ‎Hours endurance race. Toyota’s participation in these events was overseen by separate ‎entities within the company until April 2015, when Toyota established GAZOO Racing (GR), ‎to consolidate all of its motorsports activities under one in-house brand. Representing ‎Toyota’s belief that ‘the roads build the people, and the people build the cars,’ GR highlights the role of motorsports as a fundamental pillar of Toyota’s commitment to ‎making ‘ever-better’ cars. Harnessing years of experience gained under the extreme ‎conditions of various motorsports events, GR aims to forge new ‎technologies and solutions that bring the freedom, adventure, and joy of driving to everyone.

ADVANCE LOOK AT THE SERIES THE AUDI Q4 E-TRON CONCEPT

T

wo electric motors mobilize 225 kW of system power in the Q4 e-tron concept. As is typical for Audi, the driving power of the concept vehicle is brought to the road with quattro all-wheel drive. Thanks to excellent traction, it accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in just 6.3 seconds. It reaches its maximum speed at an electronically limited 180 km/h. A large battery with a capacity of 82 kilowatt hours takes up almost the entire space in the underbody area between the axles. The range of over 450 kilometers – in line with the WLTP standard – sets the benchmark in its class. The technology of the Q4 e-tron concept controls the modular electrification platform (MEB) that will be integrated in numerous electric vehicles produced by the Volkswagen Group in the future, from the compact class to the superior medium-size class. The Audi Q4 e-tron concept gives an advance look at what will already be the fifth series production electric vehicle that the manufacturer will introduce by the end of 2020. Sales of the Audi e-tron have already started, and the first vehicles will be delivered to the customers before the end of March 2019 in Europe. Later this year, the Audi e-tron Sportback will be presented, and the Audi Q2L e-tron, which was designed specifically for the Chinese market, will roll off the assembly line.

66 ISSUE 15 / maqinaonline.com

The presentation of the production version of the four-door highperformance coupé Audi e-tron GT, which is being developed at Audi Sport GmbH, is planned for the second half of 2020. The compact Audi Q4 e-tron is to make its production debut at the same time. With this offer, Audi now covers all important market segments with all-electric drive vehicles, from the A segment to the full-size class, just under two years after the launch of the first electric car. Compact on the outside, spacious on the inside: dimensions and interior 4.59 meters long, 1.90 meters wide, 1.61 meters tall: With its dimensions, the Audi Q4 e-tron concept takes its position in the upper third of the compact class. Its road space requirements thus qualify the electric SUV as an agile all-rounder that is suitable for city driving as well. In terms of the interior, by contrast, its wheelbase of 2.77 meters puts it at least one class higher. As there is no transmission tunnel restricting the space, the Q4 e-tron concept offers unsuspected spaciousness and comfort, especially in terms of legroom both at the front and in the rear.

NEWS

Visibly Audi, visibly e-tron: the exterior The Q4 e-tron concept is identifiable as an Audi at first glance by the Singleframe with the brand logo, the four rings. And it will take no more than two glances to see that this is an electric Audi e-tron: Like the first production Audi with electric drive, the new concept vehicle also features a structured closed surface within a broad, almost upright octagonal frame in place of a traditional radiator grille. Air is supplied via large inlets that extend from below the two matrix LED headlights all the way down to the front apron. The prominently modelled fenders of all four wheels are a further classic Audi design feature that distinguishes the brand. The widened features of the Q4 e-tron concept are designed to be highly organic and flowing, and they add a characteristic touch to the side view. The accentuation of the rocker panel area between the axles, where the battery and thus the powerhouse of this SUV is located, is a typical feature of the e-tron. Large 22 inch wheels leave no doubt about the potential of the Audi e-tron concept. Its roof line slants down slightly toward the back, giving the silhouette a particularly dynamic look. Finally, the body paint in “Solar Sky,” a shade of blue that changes depending on the angle of the light, is a sustainable innovation in two senses: The paint, which was developed specifically for the Audi Q4 e-tron concept and produced under environmentally friendly conditions, effectively reflects a short-wave fraction of sunlight, near the infrared spectrum. This reduces the build-up of heat on the surface of the body and the interior significantly. This benefits the subjective well-being of the occupants while at the same time reducing the energy input required for the air conditioning, which is then not needed as much to cool the vehicle interior on warm days. This, in turn, improves the range and the global carbon footprint of the Q4 e-tron concept.

Electric offensive: twelve all-electric drive models by 2025 The brand with the four rings launched its electric offensive with the world premiere of the all-electric SUV Audi e-tron in September 2018. By 2025, Audi will offer twelve automobiles with all-electric drive in the most important markets worldwide and achieve roughly one-third of its sales with electrified models. The SUVs within this portfolio include the e-tron and the e-tron Sportback due to make its debut in 2019. In addition, there will be a range of models with classic body layout such as Avant and Sportback. The range will cover every relevant market segment from the compact class to the luxury class. The Audi e-tron GT concept show car, a highly dynamic coupé with a low floor, made its debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show 2018. The technology in this automobile was developed in collaboration with Porsche; the design and character of the e-tron GT concept are packed full of unmistakable Audi DNA. The project will be developed into volume-production models by the end of 2020. The Premium Platform Electric (PPE) is a special joint project of the development departments at Audi and Porsche. It will be the foundation for multiple Audi model families with all-electric drive covering the high-volume B through D segments.

errari N.V. (NYSE/MTA: RACE) (“Ferrari” or the “Company”) announced its consolidated preliminary results for the fourth quarter and twelve months ended December 31, 2018.

Shipments Shipments totalled 9,251 units in 2018, up 853 units or +10.2% vs. prior year. This achievement was driven by a 19.6% increase in sales of our 12 cylinder models (V12), while the 8 cylinder models (V8) grew by 7.3%. The V12 performance was mainly led by the 812 Superfast, partially offset by lower sales of LaFerrari Aperta that finished its limited series run. V8 performance was led by the ramp up of the Ferrari Portofino as well as the newly launched special series 488 Pista. Growth in shipments occurred across all regions: EMEA grew 13.1%, Americas increased by 6.7%, China, Hong Kong and Taiwan, were up 12.6% and Rest of APAC was up 7.8%. Total net revenues

Revenues in Cars and spare parts (Euro 2,535 million, +3.2% at current currency or +6.9% at constant currency) were supported by higher volumes led by the 812 Superfast, as well as the ramp up of the Ferrari Portofino and the 488 Pista. Additionally, pricing and personalization programs positively contributed along with deliveries of the Ferrari J50 and first deliveries of the FXX K EVO, which was partially offset by lower sales of LaFerrari Aperta. The erosion in Engines revenues (Euro 284 million, -23.8% at current and constant currency) reflected lower shipments to Maserati. Sponsorship, commercial and brand revenues (Euro 506 million, +2.4% at current currency or +5.3% at constant currency) were up thanks to stronger revenues from sponsorship as well as a higher 2017 championship ranking compared to 2016, partially offset by lower sales generated by other brand related activities. Currency, including translation and transaction impacts as well as foreign currency hedges, had a negative impact of Euro 105 million (mainly USD, GBP and JPY).

2018 highlights 488 Pista: on February 21, 2018, the Group announced that it had selected the 88thedition of the Geneva International Motor Show for the world premiere of the 488 Pista, the Group’s successor to Ferrari’s V8-engined special series. It combines the finest race-developed technological solutions with the joy of en plein air driving to deliver an exhilarating experience behind the wheel.

The 3.9-litre V8 takes the “International Engine of the Year Award”: on June 5, 2018, the latest iteration of Ferrari’s turbo-charged V8 that equips, in various forms, all Ferrari’s V8engined cars, received the award for the best engine in the world for the third year running in the 2018 International Engine of the Year Awards. Additionally Ferrari’s turbo-charged V8 was voted the best engine of the last 20 years.

The model’s engine, dynamics and aerodynamics are derived from two track cars: the 488 Challenge and the 488 GTE. The latter won the GT class of the FIA World Endurance Championship in 2017, thus giving Ferrari a total of five GT Manufacturers’ titles since the championship’s inception in 2012. Furthermore, this model has very clearly benefited from the extensive development work done to produce the coupé version, the 488 Pista.

Ferrari takes the “Red Dot: Best of the Best” design award: On July 10, 2018, for the fourth year running, Ferrari received the “Red Dot: Best of the Best” award for the ground-breaking design of the newly launched Ferrari Portofino. B

entley Motors is today announcing full details of the world’s fastest production SUV. The Bentayga Speed features an enhanced 635 PS (626 bhp) version of the renowned 6.0-litre W12 engine that delivers a top speed of 190 mph (306 km/h) and 0–62 mph (0–100 km/h) in 3.9 seconds. Designed, engineered and handcrafted in Great Britain, the Bentayga Speed is the most powerful and performance-oriented Bentayga to date. It builds on a long tradition of Speed models that was born with the Continental GT in 2007 and pushes the boundaries of Bentayga performance further since claiming the production SUV record at the gruelling Pikes Peak International Hill Climb last year.

To match the elevated levels of performance, the Bentayga Speed sports a purposeful exterior look. Dark-tint headlights, body-coloured side skirts and a striking tailgate spoiler hint at the SUV’s performance credentials. Dark-tint radiator and bumper grilles, a unique 22-inch wheel design available in three finishes and Speed signature badging add to the sporting design cues. Inside, the Bentayga Speed introduces a dramatic design theme. This includes elegantly crafted ‘swooshes’ around the door and door grab, on the edge of the seat cushions and backrest bolsters, and on the lower console; a new contrast stitching on the diamond quilting; discreet Speed badging; a Speed illuminated treadplate signature; and the use of Alcantara materials for the first time in a Bentayga.

With a top speed of 190 mph, the Bentayga Speed is our most powerful and performance-oriented variant to date.

NEWS

As with all Bentaygas, the all-wheel-drive Speed is equipped with Electronic Differential Lock and up to eight Drive Dynamics modes. Bespoke engineering revisions to the Sport mode provide a more dynamic drive, while a greater exhaust character and firmer suspension tune further increase driver engagement. Customers can personalise the Bentayga Speed to their own requirements with a range of exclusive options. Among them are carbon ceramic brakes, 22-way adjustable front seats with massage function, carbon fibre fascia panels, Bentley rear-seat entertainment (RSE) and mood lighting. Bentayga Speed – The Pinnacle of SUV Luxury and Performance The new model takes the Bentayga’s extraordinary abilities to new levels, boosting maximum power from 608 PS in the existing 6.0-litre W12 twin-turbocharged model to 635 PS (626 bhp) in the new Speed. Effortless acceleration is delivered thanks to 900 Nm (664 lb.ft) of torque.

72 ISSUE 15 / maqinaonline.com

With exceptional performance, comfort and handling, maximum speed is also increased from 187 mph (301 km/h) to 190 mph (306 km/h) in the new Speed, while the 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) acceleration time is reduced from 4.1 seconds to 3.9 seconds. The performance pinnacle of the Bentayga range, Speed is equipped with four on-road Drive Dynamics modes: Comfort at one extreme, and Bentley and Sport at the other, with Custom for customers who opt to create their own driving set-up. Uniquely in the Speed, the Sport mode has been recalibrated to enhance response from the W12 engine and the eight-speed automatic transmission, as well as the suspension and Bentley Dynamic Ride. The effect is a more dynamic and engaging drive. Bentley Dynamic Ride is the world’s first electric active roll control technology that utilises an unrivalled 48V system. This system instantly counteracts lateral rolling forces when cornering and ensures maximum tyre contact to deliver class-leading cabin stability, ride comfort and exceptional handling.

A greater exhaust character during start up and gear downshifts combines with a firmer suspension set-up to further enhance the driver experience. The Bentayga’s permanent all-wheel drive offers class-leading handling and go-anywhere ability, while powerful ceramic brakes are also an option.

Speed signatures adorn the lower edges of both front doors. The Bentayga Speed also features a body coloured screening panel underneath the lower front grille. Uniquely, the bumper and radiator grilles are a dark-tint matrix that enhances the model’s performance credentials.

The Bentayga Speed’s ceramic brakes are the largest and most powerful ever fitted to a Bentley, with a maximum braking toque of 6,000 Nm and engineered to withstand temperatures up to 1,000 °C. They also save more than 20 kg over iron brakes.

Another signature feature of the Speed is the dark tint front and rear lamps. This is complemented by a new, 22-inch 10-spoke wheel design that is offered in three finishes – silver, dark tint or black, which is available for any customer who opts for Bentley’s contemporary Black Specification.

Discreet and elegant

Handcrafted in Crewe, England, the Bentayga’s cabin is the epitome of modern British design. Bentayga Speed introduces a new colour split interior, specifically designed to highlight unique styling lines. Key to this is the use of Alcantara trim in a Bentayga for the first time.

Alcantara is a highly tactile cloth that is often the preserve of high-performance cars – it has previously been used by Bentley on models such as the Continental Supersports. According to preference, customers can revert back to leather as a no cost option on the Bentayga Speed. The styling lines are highlighted by elegantly crafted ‘swooshes’ around the door and door grab, on the edge of the seat cushions and backrest bolsters, and on the lower console. Contrast stitching is available on all Bentaygas. In the Speed, this is extended to include the diamond quilting on the cushion bolsters, at the top of the backrest, on the door pads and on the backboard of any Speed specified with four seats instead of five. While Bentayga customers have the option of the Bentley wings embroidered at the top of the seat backrests, on the new Speed models these have been replaced with the word ‘Speed’, in either blind or contrast stitching.

TOYOTA PREMIERES ALL-NEW SUPRA AT DETROIT AUTO SHOW

T

oyota premiered its much-anticipated all-new Supra recently at the 2019 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit. The Supra name evokes power, performance and handling that defined a succession of world-class cars for a quarter of a century. As a thoroughbred sports car, the Toyota Supra built a reputation both as a formidable performer on the road and as an all-conquering machine on the racetrack, earning legions of fans around the world.

Supra is like an old friend that holds a special place in my heart. While other manufacturers were putting the beautiful new prototypes they were going to introduce through their paces, I was driving an old Supra that was no longer in production. So even though Toyota had no plans to make a new Supra, just like a lot of other die-hard Supra fans around the world I secretly wanted to make it happen. The new GR Supra was born through testing at Nürburgring, and I can honestly say that it is better than ever.”

The all-new Supra is the first global model of GAZOO Racing’s (GR) sports car series. Ever since first competing in Germany’s 24 Hours of Nürburgring endurance race in 2007, GR has been developing its cars and people through its motorsports activities with the goal of making “ever-better cars.” The knowledge and expertise it has built up over the years have been funneled into bringing the Supra back to life in the form of the GR Supra as a car that people the world over will find fun to drive.

The all-new fifth-generation Supra marks the end of the 17-year hiatus since production of the previous generation concluded in 2002. Ever since the Supra’s inception in 1978, all generations have been front-engine, rear-wheel-drive vehicles powered by an inline six-cylinder engine. The latest rendition is no exception. This time around, extensive attention has also been paid to the three fundamental elements of wheelbase, tread, and center of gravity, thus achieving handling performance befitting a pure sports car.

Toyota President Akio Toyoda, who is also a master driver, commented: “Back in the day, I spent countless hours driving an old Supra at the Nürburgring to become a master driver.

NEWS

Chief Engineer Tetsuya Tada, who headed the vehicle’s development, said: “We set out to create a pure sports car that would deliver the ultimate in exciting driving experiences. Rather than only working toward improving specs such as horsepower and circuit lap times, we emphasized sensitivity in performance, such as the degree to which driving could be felt to be enjoyable, with car and driver becoming one.”

It is worth mentioning that the first production 2020 Toyota GR Supra to roll off the assembly line, ‘Global #1,’ was auctioned for charity recently for $2.1 million (~ AED 7.7 million) at the 48th Annual Barrett-Jackson Auction at WestWorld of Scottsdale, with proceeds going to the American Heart Association (AHA) and the Bob Woodruff Foundation (BWF).

THE CHEVROLET TAHOE RST

BRINGS BOTH PERFORMANCES AND LOOKS TO THE TABLE BY: TAREK HAWCHAR | PHOTOS: NATALI LEONOVA

L

arge vehicles are presently in great demand. As such every automobile manufacturer is looking to gain supremacy with the introduction of their latest SUV models. Among the many companies fighting for glory is the American company Chevrolet. To be competitive amongst the other great manufacturers Chevrolet released the Tahoe RST and it is one of the best SUVs you could get from Chevrolet. Let’s take a look at some of its features.

78 ISSUE 15 / maqinaonline.com

REVIEW

EXTERIOR At first glance, you can immediately recognize the Tahoe thanks to the wide grille at the front and the unmistakable Chevrolet logo in the middle of the grille. Overall the shape of the SUV is boxy making it look bulky and huge. From the rear, the Tahoe RST looks like a regular Tahoe with some minor changes to the badging. But the road presence of this vehicle cannot be denied. You take it outside and people will notice. The major defining factor of the Tahoe RST is that the vehicle has a black grille, black windows, black 22-inch wheels. The RST version is basically a visual upgrade to the vehicle.

ENGINE Under the hood of the Tahoe RST is the basic 5.3-liter V8 that that makes 355 hp. However, if you have a higher-end Tahoe like the premium version then an RST Performance upgrade can also be opted for which replaces the 5.3- liter engine with a 6.2-liter V8 that creates 420 horsepower and 623 Nm of torque. This setup costs an extra $2820 on an AWD model and it is worth it. The RST package engine is teamed up with a 10-speed automatic transmission. You can also opt for other packages as well to improve the performance of your Tahoe RST, like the Performance Front Brake Kit, Sun, Entertainment and Destination package. The vehicle rushes from 0-100 km/h in just 5.7 seconds. That is better than the standard Tahoe and even better than rival vehicles like the Ford Expedition and Cadillac Escalade. The Tahoe RST has thick and huge tires which are perfect for desert driving. The P285/45R-22 Bridgestone Duelers make it easy for the vehicle to conquer sand dunes as well as tarmac. When it comes to performance the Tahoe RST lacks a bit of juice. The vehicle is huge and has a higher center of gravity so you should expect the SUV to have a bit of understeer and expect it to lose some grip on tight corners. But on straight roads and on off-road conditions the vehicle performs remarkably well. After all, you won’t be taking the Tahoe RST on the track anytime soon.

INTERIOR

The cabin is spacious with lots of headroom and legroom for the driver and the first passenger

On the inside, the Tahoe has a decent appearance. There is a nice touch of leather on the dash and steering wheel while wood accent paneling can be seen in specific places. The cabin is spacious with lots of headroom and legroom for the driver and the first passenger. Space is equally ample in the second row of the vehicle. The dashboard has a modern infotainment system that allows you to access navigation, radio, stereo and make calls. The infotainments system has a touchscreen but there are a few buttons and knobs provided for the driver for quick access to the various functions. Just below these functions is the Air-conditioning setup. This part of the center console stretches out to run over the transmission tunnel. On that transmission tunnel, you get cup holders and small storage space all covered and out of sight. Bigger storage space is also provided between the two seats for large items. If you have more people in the vehicle and you are on a long trip, you can always access the overhead screen. This screen is huge and like a TV and can be accessed via special buttons on the roof of the vehicle. We talked about storage space in the Tahoe. You should keep in mind that the Tahoe has more than necessary storage space. The third -row seats are foldable to add more space but if you want more, the second-row seats can also fold down for maximum benefit.

82 ISSUE 15 / maqinaonline.com

The Tahoe RST is the SUV that a family would want. This vehicle is spacious on the inside right up to the third-row seats. Seldom do any other SUVs have space in the third-row. Furthermore, there are extra entertainment options like the pop-up tv screen that is not found in most other SUVs. The powerful engine is a big plus as well for those dads that are looking for a bit of fun after dropping their kids at school. In short, the Chevrolet Tahoe RST is a complete package for the family.

MERCEDES – AMG GLE 43 RAISING THE COMPETITION’S BAR BY: TAREK HAWCHAR | PHOTOS: NATALI LEONOVA

T

he automotive world is beaming with news of SUVs. Every other manufacturer is releasing its own iteration of its flagship SUV, then why should a brand like Mercedes stay behind. The German brand released its 2019 Mercedes- AMG GLE43 just recently and we are still in awe of the vehicle. The GLE43 is one of the best crossover SUVs out there and with the newest improvements found in the 2019 model, there is no doubt that the GLE43 is going to sweep the floor against its competitors. Let’s take a look at some of the exciting features of this remarkable vehicle.

84 ISSUE 15 / maqinaonline.com

REVIEW

EXTERIOR The AMG-tuned GLE 43 can be classified as a sports vehicle and as such its appearance is always very keenly designed. The 2019 model is no exception. One look at the vehicle will tell you that it is one of Mercedes’s greatest creations. The front fascia gets the unforgettable Mercedes logo. The logo is huge and can be seen from far away. It seems Mercedes likes its cars getting noticed. The grill accompanying the logo has a small AMG emblazoned on it to let you and others know that it is a pure performance version. The headlights include daytime lights as well. The air vents below are large enough to feed the air to the GLE43’s massive engine. From the rear, the vehicle looks a lot sportier thanks to the quad exhaust system and sleek taillights. The German manufacturer has fitted the GLE 43 with 20- inch tires that have a black accent. The tire setup of 265/45R20 completes the wide look of the vehicle that is expected of a Sports Utility Vehicle. The glasses are company tinted which means Mercedes has taken special care of customer’s preferences.

ENGINE The GLE 43 is a luxurious vehicle but when it comes to performance you should not think lightly of it. The AMGtuned vehicle has a 3.0-liter V-6 with a twin turbo that churns out 385 horsepower and 520 Nm of torque. The engine is mounted with a 9-speed automatic transmission that sends power to all four wheels, as a result, you get naught to sixty acceleration in 5.4 seconds. The fuel economy is 13.8 liters per 100 km in the city and 10.23 liters/100 km on the highway. The vehicle has all the latest safety amenities such as Hill Descent Control, Hill Hold Control, ABS, Airbags a First Aid Kit and what not. All the features make the GLE 43 worth the buy. Its latest features are best in class especially when you consider the performance features of this vehicle. The center of gravity of the SUV is pretty low which allows you to get a great deal of feel from the steering. The vehicle is great around corners and a great complement for the vehicle’s humungous engine.

INTERIOR

The dashboard is adorned with aluminum and leather so it is exquisite

The interior is spacious but keeps in mind that this SUV is not full-size so you will not get the benefits of extra storage space. The cabin is covered in all-black leather which is soft and comfortable. There is a panoramic sunroof in place to provide the cabin with great ambient lighting. The dashboard is filled with all the latest amenities including an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system that folds out with the touch of a button, radio, stereo system and navigation. Most modern vehicles do not have aux functionality but this vehicle has such a luxury. Other things like a CD player, DVD player, Clock, Steering Wheel Controls, Voice Activation, Climate Control etc. Everything is positioned in such a way that the driver can reach them with utmost ease. The Harmon Kardon sound system is fully equipped so you can enjoy your favorite tunes to the fullest. It consists of 13 speakers that provide the best audio experience. The seats at the front and the back are all 8-way adjustable. The front seats can be heated as well. The dashboard is adorned with aluminum and leather so it is exquisite. The only biggest drawback is that there is no third-row seating so you can not fit a lot of people inside but there is ample room for your luggage and cargo.

The AMG badge is enough to draw a clear picture on your mind about the vehicle’s performance

CONCLUSION The Mercedes—AMG GLE 43 can be classified as a family crossover having enough power when you need it. The AMG badge is enough to draw a clear picture on your mind about the vehicle’s performance. You can take this vehicle on the road and enjoy a good road trip or you could decide to go off-road and still you won’t be disappointed. Although there are not many features for a complete off-road adventure, there are enough safety and assist features for a person to afford a decent enough adventure. The GLE 43 is a direct competitor of SUVs like the BMW X6. Mercedes has still done a good job of beating its competitors in every aspect may it be price, luxury, performance or safety.

MASERATI LEVANTE: THE ALLEGRA ANTINORI ONE-OFF AND THE INTERACTIVE JOURNEY THROUGH ITALIAN EXCELLENCE AT THE 89TH GENEVA INTERNATIONAL MOTOR SHOW

E

urope’s biggest Motor Show of the year gets under way and Maserati presents a one-off Levante, giving a glimpse of the future customization programme. It has been customized to fit the requirements of Allegra Antinori, Vice President of Italian wine producer Marchesi Antinori. At the 89th edition of the Geneva International Motor Show, Maserati further highlights customization and the expression of Italian identity combined with exquisite craftsmanship, state-of-the-art technology and sophisticated aesthetics: a unique, exclusive mix achieved through an interactive experience involving the Italian materials of excellence present on the stand.

MASERATI LEVANTE: THE ALLEGRA ANTINORI ONE-OFF At the 2019 Geneva International Motor Show, the Trident brand presents a unique offering: a one-off Levante, a preview of Maserati’s future customization programme. The stand showcases the Maserati Levante one-off entirely customized by Allegra Antinori, Vice President of Italian wine firm Marchesi Antinori, world leader in quality wines.

90 ISSUE 15 / maqinaonline.com

The Maserati Centro Stile assisted the customer in the configuration of her car, in a true process of shared creation, a concept which is much more than the mere choice of accessories. A unique project in which the customer expresses herself, her emotions and her story. Implemented in this way, the special bond between Maserati’s ground-breaking innovation and the attention to detail normally found in the workshops of traditional craftsmen comes to life in a unique Maserati. In this first example of the new customization process, every detail Allegra Antinori has defined is closely linked to a facet of her personality. The external configuration is a distinctive tri-coat green, a special colour inspired by the shades of the Tuscan hills. The external details (door handles, side air vents and grille inserts) are finished in dark look chrome, toning to perfection with the body colour to give the Maserati SUV a truly sophisticated overall look. The interiors of Allegra Antinori’s one-off features many unique combinations, which have never previously been used on a Levante. The lower dashboard, door panel, central tunnel unit and seat colour reference the warm hues of the earth of Tuscan vineyards.

NEWS

The unique “Pieno Fiore” leather used for the seats is another exquisite choice: it is coloured with aniline and oils, with no surface finishes, but is embellished with classical button-tufted effect 3D embroidery. The technique used provides exceptional depth of colour and a very smooth tactile sensation, and like a fine wine, this leather will simply improve with age.The central tunnel is in a special finish using a material that is new even for Maserati: carbon fibre with copper wire and high gloss finish. Here again, there are clear references to the Antinori estate and the concept of Cor-Ten, the weathering steel used for the construction of the Antinori Winery in the Chianti Classico area, midway between Florence and Siena. The 100% natural mohair wool mats provide the final, exclusive touch to a tailor-made customization with attention to every single detail.

Each area will feature a display of materials and components that bear witness to the unending quest for excellence, style and originality, typical of products designed and Made in Italy, and therefore typical of Maserati. Speaking of innovation and design, when it comes to customizing the stand, for the first time ever in Maserati’s Customization Area, there will be a D-Table, the only multi-touch, interactive table featuring an elegant and sophisticated design. Latest-generation software will enable customers to configure their cars by selecting external and internal combinations, colours and materials at a touch. Customers will be offered a unique experience for the configuration of their individual Maserati, using the customization features present on the stand.

AN INTERACTIVE EXPERIENCE INVOLVING WORKING TABLES OF ITALIAN PRODUCTS OF EXCELLENCE

Ermenegildo Zegna - Working Table

Maserati will host - together with Ermenegildo Zegna, a longstanding partner and a leader in the field of men’s luxury clothing - two other leading artisanal firms in their field: Giorgetti, the internationally renowned Italian woodworking company, known for its furniture and unique design pieces, and De Castelli, a leading metalworking firm, specializing in the production of unique home design accessories, custom surfaces and projects. The stand provides an interactive journey through three different thematic areas, each of them with a dedicated working table.

The Zegna working table illustrates the Zegna-Maserati tailoring atelier, from the preliminary phase of weaving the PELLETESSUTATM using spools of sturdy bands of leather, through to the rolls of resulting woven material in the Maserati leather colours (black, tan, red and dark brown). Like a fine, made-to-measure shoe, this PELLETESSUTATM (woven leather) adapts its shape to the sinuous surface of the Maserati Quattroporte dashboard (the featured element of the interior, over which the PELLETESSUTATM fits perfectly; the three-dimensionality of the woven strips of leather create a tactile surface for this component, restoring light and texture, imbuing the volume of this component with expressive force).

NEWS

Two Quattroporte dashboard fascias covered with black and tan PELLETESSUTATM are available to view. Also on display on the table are five decorative Maserati Levante door panel trim elements, which reveal the opportunities for chromatic customization of the Maserati PELLETESSUTATM.The PELLETESSUTATM tiles represent studies and design research between the Ermenegildo Zegna Style Centre and Maserati, exploring jacquard designs that mix colours, graphic elements and patterns with an eye to potential customizations. The sketches depict the research carried out by the Maserati Centro Stile into textures, their visual application to the various components and efforts to balance and harmonize colours within the context of the car interior.

Giorgetti - Working Table The Giorgetti working table features outstanding woodworking and cabinetry skills. By means of three Quattroporte dashboard inserts Giorgetti illustrates the central role of wood when it comes to Maserati components, highlighting how initial mechanical processes are followed by manual ones, operations like precision carving work, turning and modelling in three of the 12 Giorgetti wood varieties: Ash, Walnut and Maple. The table also features a wooden panel in antiqued Ash with

Shibori decorations, the inspiration for the two Quattroporte dashboard fascias which feature this technique in a micro-shibori version, styled and expressed all-over pattern sections. The smallest dashboard inserts feature the same treatment for larger elements on the dashboard in antiqued Ash burl wood and natural Ash burl wood. Finally, the sheets of veneer complete the table as elements of stylistic research in which Giorgetti and Maserati experiment with wood varieties which are transformed into graphic landscapes in the case of the Ziricote wood, or dynamic textural effects in the case of the Tanganika Frise.

De Castelli - Working Table The working table illustrates the meeting between the Italian excellence of De Castelli, when it comes to creative metal surfacing, and Maserati’s eagerness to embrace and interpret this poetry in metal. The sophistication of the metal working processes applied to its interior components (the dashboard fascia and the pedal trims) serves to further enhance the interior, not only functionally but also by introducing a sense of poetry and textural allure. A storytelling inspired by the chromatic richness of the Italian sea and landscape. The four sheets of metal demonstrate the process of working the semi-finished material.

NEWS

The sheet of raw material in its pure form is subjected to a manual hammering phase, fashioning it into the shape of the Maserati Quattroporte dashboard. The featured element of this interior, is perfectly suited to communicating the subtle chromatic and poetic transitions of the DeMarea finish, selected for this exquisite work of art. The other two elements illustrate the phases of oxidation and surface transformation of the brass: human manuality, creativity and sense of aesthetic pleasure decide when to stop time and halt the process of oxidation, ascertaining the perfect moment for obtaining the DeMarea gradient. This process is simply defining the uniqueness of each detail. On the artisan’s working table and creative space, the process of storytelling unfolds with the help of tools and historical instruments, where metal sheet is shaped into a work of art. Subjected to various surface treatments, the sheets of metal convey the excellence of the De Castelli world, not to mention Maserati’s flair for design. The working table also displays a Quattroporte dashboard fascia with the DeMarea Iron, DeMarea Copper and DeMarea Brass finish.

The DeMarea trilogy illustrates a single process composed of superimposed, polysemous manual oxidation operations. These are all inspired by Italian sea and landscapes, creating “watercolour” effects, conveying highly textural sensations and evocations of waves lapping against Venice’s signature mooring posts. The collaboration between De Castelli and Maserati also expresses itself in the pedals. These key elements for operating a car have been embellished with a hand-applied oxidation treatment, boasting a more sophisticated flair in the DeMarea Copper kit, combined with the luxurious pad in vegetaltanned Saddle Extra leather, which is inspired by the soles of madeto-measure shoes. While a more “art workshop” flair distinguishes the DeMarea Iron kit, brandishing logos engraved with the Maserati name. The sketches depict the research carried out by the Maserati Centro Stile into textures, their visual application to the various components and efforts to balance and harmonize colours within the context of the car interior.

The most powerful straight-six petrol engine ever to see action in a BMW M car provides the muscle for stunning performance attributes. The newly developed high-revving unit with M TwinPower Turbo technology generates maximum output of 353 kW/480 hp from its 3.0-litre displacement, together with peak torque von 600 Nm (442 lb-ft). The version of the bi-turbo unit developed specially for the BMW X3 M Competition and BMW X4 M Competition raises the output figure by 22 kW/30 hp to 375 kW/510 hp. Flawless distribution of power: M xDrive, Active M Differential. The new high-performance engine teams up with an eight-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic and uses the new M xDrive all- wheel-drive system, which made its debut in the BMW M5, to channel its power to the road. The M xDrive system has a rear-wheel bias and offers BMW X3 M and BMW X4 M owners two AWD driving modes. The centrally controlled interaction between M xDrive and the Active M Differential at the rear axle allows the all-wheel-drive system to split the engine’s power between the four wheels as required to deliver optimal traction, agility and directional stability.

96 ISSUE 15 / maqinaonline.com

The BMW X3 M and BMW X4 M both sprint from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.2 seconds, while their Competition variants hit 100 km/h (62 mph) from rest in just 4.1 seconds. M-specific chassis technology provides sublime dynamics. The combination of dynamism and precision for which BMW M cars are renowned is underpinned by model-specific body strengthening elements and sophisticated chassis technology tuned astutely to marshal the engine’s power. With three settings selectable at the touch of a button, the M-specific suspension’s electronically controlled dampers enable both excellent everyday comfort and extremely direct contact with the road, with low wheel and body movements. The bespoke kinematics and elastokinematics of the M-specific suspension – with its double-joint spring strut front axle and five- link rear axle – deliver precise wheel location and directional stability.Composed to also deliver precisely controllable onlimit handling, the chassis technology package rounds off with M-specific steering (including M Servotronic and variable ratio) and powerful M compound brakes. Among the other items on the standard specification list are 20-inch M light-alloy wheels.

NEWS

Like the damper control systems and M xDrive modes, the engine and transmission characteristics and steering set-up can be adjusted at the touch of a button. The DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) system allows controlled wheel slip in M Dynamic Mode and, needless to say, can also be switched off. Plus, the content shown in the optional Head-Up Display can be specified via the iDrive menu. The driver can store two overall set-up options – configured as desired from the above parameters – in the iDrive menu and select them as and when required using the two M buttons on the steering wheel. Signature M design elements for the exterior and interior. M-specific design features optimise the supply of cooling air for the BMW X3 M, BMW X4 M and Competition models, as well as their aerodynamics. Inside the cars, the electrically adjustable sports seats, Vernasca leather upholstery, M-specific cockpit, M leather steering wheel and M gearshift selector lever create a sporty and luxurious ambience. The BMW X3 M Competition and BMW X4 M Competition bring further exclusive accents to the exterior, in the form of High-gloss Black for the BMW kidney grille surround, exterior mirror caps and M gills, and the rear spoiler of the Sports Activity Coupe.

Their standard equipment also includes 21-inch M light-alloy wheels in polished Black and an M Sport exhaust system. The expressive aura of the interior, meanwhile, is enhanced by M Sport seats with extended Merino leather upholstery, modelspecific door sill plates and a model nameplate on the centre console. Options for the Competition models include special bi-colour leather upholstery variants with Alcantara applications. The optional M Carbon exterior package (expected to be available from August 2019), which features design elements in carbon fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) for the front air intakes, the air blades in the front apron, the rear diffuser and the exterior mirror caps, adds further individual flourishes. On the BMW X4 M and BMW X4 M Competition, these elements are joined by a CFRP rear spoiler. Among the items fitted as standard in the BMW X3 M, BMW X4 M and Competition models are LED headlights, the hi-fi speaker system and the ConnectedDrive navigation package including the Navigation system Professional. The options list for the BMW X3 and BMW X4 provides further scope for individualisation and includes cutting-edge driver assistance systems and the digital services from BMW Connected and BMW ConnectedDrive.

THE FERRARI F8 TRIBUTO

A CELEBRATION OF EXCELLENCE AN HOMAGE TO THE MOST POWERFUL V8 IN FERRARI HISTORY

F

errari has revealed the first official photographs of the F8 Tributo, the new mid-rear engined sports car that represents the highest expression of the company’s classic two-seater berlinetta. The name is an homage to both the model’s uncompromising layout and to the engine that powers it – with a massive 720 cv and a record specific power output of 185 cv/l, it is the most powerful V8 in Prancing Horse history for a non-special series car and sets the benchmark not just for turbos, but for engines across the board. The 3902 cc V8 won “Best Engine” in the International Engine of the Year awards three years running in 2016, 2017 and 2018 and, in addition, in 2018, was awarded the title of the best engine of the last two decades.

98 ISSUE 15 / maqinaonline.com

As these prestigious awards demonstrate, in the automotive world, Ferrari’s V8 engine is seen as the very epitome of sportiness and driving pleasure. This is particularly the case when it is mid-rearmounted in a two-seater. Ferrari has been honing the scope of abilities of this architecture, which creates an optimal weight balance, to perfection for over four decades. The result is the F8 Tributo, which is one of the fastest, most thrilling and communicative supercars ever. The new car replaces the 488 GTB, with improvements across the board, providing even better control on the limit along with greater on-board comfort.

NEWS

maqinaonline.com / ISSUE 15 99

NEWS

The F8 Tributo punches out 50 cv more than the car it replaces, is lighter and benefits from a 10% improvement in aerodynamic efficiency along with the latest version of the Side Slip Angle Control, now in 6.1 guise. So while the F8 Tributo offers the highest levels of performance of any car in the current range, that performance is also very usable. The F8 Tributo delivers its 720 cv without the slightest hint of turbo lag and produces an evocative soundtrack. Instantaneous power is matched by exceptional handling thanks to advanced vehicle dynamics solutions. These include a new version of the Ferrari Dynamic Enhancer (FDE+) which can be activated in the manettino’s RACE position for the first time, a move designed to make performance on the limit easier to reach and control for an even greater number of drivers. The steering wheel rim is also smaller in diameter to enhance the level of tactility and make the car feel even more agile. In addition, weight reduction measures have cut the car’s dry weight by 40 kg compared to the 488 GTB, further enhancing both responsiveness and driving pleasure without impinging on interior comfort. State-of-the-art aerodynamic solutions incorporated into the car’s body help ensure that the extraordinarily powerful engine can be fully exploited. As with the 488 Pista, the F8 Tributo’s aero package is directly evolved from the track and it adopts several features from the 488 Pista designed to help manage engine heat, including, for instance, the rearward-angled front radiators and the dynamic engine air intakes positioned either side of the spoiler instead of on the rear flanks. Designed by the Ferrari Styling Centre, the F8 Tributo is essentially a bridge to a new design language that will continue to emphasise Ferrari’s key characteristics of high performance and extreme aerodynamic efficiency.

100 ISSUE 15 / maqinaonline.com

The front of the car is characterised by the S-Duct, a solution that made its debut on the 488 Pista, but which has been redesigned to suit the extensive modifications made to this area of the car. The result is that the S-Duct alone contributes an impressive 15% to the overall increase in downforce compared to the 488 GTB. The new, more compact, horizontal LED headlights allowed Ferrari’s aerodynamicists to incorporate new brake cooling intakes in combination with those on the outside of the bumper, the aim being to improve air flow throughout the entire wheelarch and thereby avoid having to increase the size of the braking system to cope with the car’s greater speed. The new Lexan rear screen showcases the engine compartment and also brings a modern twist to the most distinctive design element from Ferrari’s most famous V8, the F40. The louvres help extract hot air from the engine compartment without impacting the efficiency of the blown spoiler which has been further evolved to increase downforce generated at the rear. The spoiler wraps around the tail lights, visually lowering the car’s centre of gravity and allowing a return to the classic twin light cluster and body-coloured tail, another signature of the early 8-cylinder berlinettas like the very first in the legendary series, the 1975 308 GTB. The cabin retains the classic, driver-oriented cockpit look typical of Ferrari’s mid-rear-engined berlinettas, but every element of the dash, door panels and tunnel, has been completely redesigned. The new generation HMI (Human Machine Interface), complete with round air vents, new steering wheel and controls as well as a new 7” passenger touchscreen display, significantly enhance the on-board environment for driver and passenger.

The Levante features the Integrated Vehicle Control (IVC) system for impressive driving dynamics, better performance, and a genuine Maserati driving experience, by helping to prevent vehicle instability, instead of correcting “driver mistakes” as a traditional Electronic Stability Program (ESP) system does. The ideal 50:50 weight balance and the low centre of gravity common to all Levante models, in combination with the finely tuned double-wishbone front / Multi Link rear suspension, as well as the wider 22-inch rear tyres on forged aluminium alloy wheels, provide the new Trofeo with perfectly balanced handling and lateral stability. The unmistakable Levante design has reached new levels of sportiness in this model like the lower splitter, the side blades in the front air intakes, the side skirt inserts and the rear extractor, made of ultralight high-gloss carbon fibre. At the front, the Levante Trofeo has Full Matrix LED adaptive headlights, a front grille with double vertical bars in Black Piano finish, lower honeycomb mesh fascia, body colour door handles and high-performance brake calipers available in red, blue, black, silver or yellow. And to cap it off, the “Saetta” Trofeo logo adorns the iconic C-pillar of the coupé styled Levante. Inside the Levante Trofeo cabin is a wealth of elegant features which create an environment of pure luxury. “Pieno Fiore” is like no other leather used in the automotive industry for its natural, soft feel and for the unique character it develops throughout the years. This amazing Levante’s quintessentially sporty personality is highlighted by new details in “3D Touch” matt carbon fibre, the specific instrument cluster graphics, floor mats with metal Trofeo badges, and a Maserati clock with a unique dial. The on-board set up is completed by a 1,280-watt, 17-speaker Bowers & Wilkins premium surround sound audio system for a concert hall sound experience. The Levante Trofeo is the first ever Maserati equipped with 22-inch forged aluminium wheels, so Maserati cooperated with Continental to provide the new SportContact™ 6 tyre as standard equipment. The new ultra-sport tyre has substantially contributed to achieving the excellent and balanced handling and outstanding cornering performance of the most powerful Maserati in production today.

PERSONALIZATION The special things about the Maserati stand at this 89th edition of the Geneva International Motor Show is the way it focuses on highlighting a distinctive Italianness and the process of craftsmanship and customization, considerations that have prompted Maserati to host on their stand - together with Ermenegildo Zegna, a longstanding partner and a leader in the field of men’s luxury clothing, two other leading artisanal firms in their field: Giorgetti, the internationally renowned Italian woodworking company, known for its furniture and unique design pieces, and De Castelli, a leading metalworking firm, specializing in the production of unique home design accessories, custom surfaces and projects. At Maserati tradition becomes innovation, combining fine craftsmanship, advanced technology and sophisticated design for the sort of exclusive, unique mix only Maserati knows how to apply to its cars. The stand provides an instructive tour through three different dedicated thematic areas. Each area will feature a display of tools, materials and components that, specially crafted by Zegna, De Castelli and Giorgetti, bear witness to the unending quest for excellence, style and originality, typical of products designed and Made in Italy, and therefore typical of Maserati.Speaking of innovation and design, when it comes to customizing the stand, for the first time ever Maserati is taking advantage in the Customization Area of a D-Table, the only interactive table which combines the latest-generation software and elegant, sophisticated design.

ERMENEGILDO ZEGNA Zegna is a longstanding partner of Maserati and for the Geneva show will be presenting the world premiere of its new car interiors in PELLETESSUTA™, a special woven nappa leather, the product of pioneering research by Ermenegildo Zegna, seeking to create a luxurious, innovative, lightweight and soft fabric that is versatile and well suited for the creation of products, ranging from home design complements to multimedia accessories. The bond between Zegna and Maserati grows stronger with each passing year, in no small part due to the historical similarities of the two brands. The Ermenegildo Zegna Group is one of the most distinguished businesses in all of Italy. Founded back in 1910 in Trivero, in the Biellese Alps, by a young entrepreneur named Ermenegildo, whose vision was to ethically produce the most sumptuous fabrics in the world by means of innovation and the utilization of the best luxury fibres, sourced directly in their countries of origin, the company is currently guided by the fourth generation of the Zegna family. The Group, which since the late 80’s has been implementing a strategy of vertical integration, has created a global luxury brand which currently offers fabrics, clothing and accessories. Today there are 504 single-label stores in over 100 countries, of which 272 are company-owned.

GIORGETTI The Giorgetti cabinet-making tradition started in Brianza in 1898, and more than 120 years later is still continuing to evolve and innovate. The company looks to the future, how to convey and stay on top of all the changes in a dynamically transforming world. Giorgetti’s approach to interior design involves interpreting behaviours and tastes in various different markets, creating pieces that are free of all formal conventions, capable of coexisting harmoniously in any context, dissolving cultural and temporal distances. The products made by Giorgetti epitomize the best in the proud catchline, “Made and Manufactured in Italy”. Starting from design, creativity and style, and all the way to the actual manufacture of a finished product, the entire manufacturing process is completely carried out in Italy by highly qualified personnel, boasting consummate skill in the furniture sector. The craft-based means of production associated with the phrase, Made in Italy, transcends the rationale of standardized, mass-produced products, guaranteeing high levels of product customization. The indispensable work of master craftsmen is capable of imbuing Giorgetti projects with that magical allure of unique, handmade pieces.

DE CASTELLI True to its commitment to restore metal’s privileged role in projectual experimentation, De Castelli is grafting a craft-based concept and approach to work onto typically industrial processes, a bold synthesis that leads to unprecedented results. The encounter with design engenders an approach to the material founded on respect for its vast potential, including the less obvious possibilities, the ones that gradually emerge in a collection of mass-produced products that are, at the same time, unique. Not only because the hand creating them is unique, but due to the uniqueness of the cultural process that puts the main emphasis on the aesthetic value - rather than purely functional ones - of the primal material with which De Castelli shapes living spaces. One thus overturns the dictum that confines the coldness of metal to the outer margins of interior design project, bringing steel, brass and copper, in their multiple variations and finishes, to the centre of a a completely renovated scenario where they can finally glow in self-generated radiance. Delabré is the name of an artisanal finish conceived of and realized by De Castelli. It consists in the manual oxidation of materials like steel, copper and brass, capable of imbuing them with unique, unrepeatable chromatic effects.

The 21” Atlante alloy rims with blue brake calipers and the sport seats underscore the dual nature of this model. Two Maserati Ghibli S Q4 (GranSport and GranLusso trims), 430 hp, can be viewed on the stand. The GranSport trim is equipped with metallic Grigio Maratea paint on the outside and Nerissimo pack with a red interior in full-grain “Pieno Fiore” leather and black stitching, plus roof lining in black Alcantara. The Maserati Levante Trofeo for the European market is capable of delivering 580 hp at 6,250 rpm, achieving extremely high peak rotation, maintaining the same torque of 730 Nm, usable in a wide range between 2,500 and 5,000 rpm. The Levante Trofeo therefore displays the characteristic of immediately providing high levels of torque even at low revs, a feature that is appreciated by the customers of this type of SUV. Thanks to new turbochargers with increased flow, a redesigned cylinder head with specific camshafts and valves, new pistons and new connecting rods, the Levante Trofeo is able to achieve impressive power peaks, in combination with specific engine calibration mapping. The new Levante Trofeo features Full Matrix LED adaptive headlights as standard. Compared to Bi-Xenon headlamps, LED technology offers 20% better visibility, 32% cooler light and headlights that last twice as long. The full LED headlights utilize a digital camera mounted behind the rear-view mirror that supports the Glare-free High Beam detection system, allowing the driver to keep the high beam on without dazzling oncoming drivers. The system is able to create a “zone of shade” around other vehicles switching dynamically on and off the LED matrixes. The full Matrix LED headlights can create up to four light tunnels simultaneously with each tunnel as large as the obstacle. The Brembo braking system deals superbly with the high performance of the Levante Trofeo. The front brakes have adopted 6-piston aluminium monobloc calipers working on 380 mm x 34 mm drilled discs, while 4-piston aluminium monobloc calipers with 330 mm x 28 mm ventilated drilled discs are fitted at the rear. The ABS has undergone a specific setup for the Trofeo version. Levante, Ghibli and Quattroporte share the same MTC+ infotainment system, which is based on a high resolution 8.4” multi-touch screen and a double rotary knob on the centre console. For MY19 there is a choice of nine body colours for the Quattroporte and 10 for each of the Ghibli and Levante models. A new tri-coat colour is now available, born to enhance the design of each: the elegant Blu Nobile. In the wide collection of alloy wheels designed specifically for every single Maserati model, there are five brand new designs in the MY19 catalogue in 20 and 21-inch sizes, two for each of the Levante and Quattroporte models and one for the Ghibli.

KIA STINGER A RIVAL TO “ THE ULTIMATE DRIVING MACHINE ”

maqinaonline.com / ISSUE 15 111

C O V E R STO RY

N

ot so long ago, Kia was a byword for alternative. You bought a Kia because you couldn’t afford the equivalent Japanese, European or even American rival. Kia produced cheap cars which were meant to be used as means of transport and nothing more. In the last decade or two however, things started to shift. Kia became aware that people prefer quality and started making a comeback. The manufacturer finally started to rise up to the massive potential they had all along. The Cee’d proved really popular in Europe, and North America couldn’t get enough of the Optima. Spurred on by that success Kia decided to venture into new waters: sporty sedans. Now, it’s one thing to make a good car, but a completely different to make a good car that’s also sporty. The world of performance sedans is dominated by the Germans, and making a breakthrough in such an environment is rather challenging. If your product isn’t completely on point, you’re not going to have a lot of success. Most people initially laughed at the idea of a sporty Kia, but when they launched the Stinger back in 2017, we all stood back in awe.

112 ISSUE 15 / maqinaonline.com

EXTERIOR If you’re not particularly into cars, you might not even be able to tell it’s a Kia. Although the brand has been slowly creating their own design language over the past couple of years, the Stinger really brings out their full potential. The best compliment you can give it is that it doesn’t look like a regular Kia. Pictures are one thing, but seeing it in the flesh adds a whole new dimension to it. It’s physically a large car, but the proportions are spot on. It’s wide, long with a long wheelbase, and rather low. The front overhang is short and the rear one is long, giving some hints as to what lies underneath. The front fascia is entirely new, with Kia’s revised Tigernose grille. If you, like most people, thought the Stinger would be a redesigned Optima, think again. This is an entirely new model from the ground up.

MOST PEOPLE INITIALLY LAUGHED AT THE IDEA OF A SPORTY KIA, BUT WHEN THEY LAUNCHED THE STINGER, WE ALL STOOD BACK IN AWE

The roofline slopes downwards almost from the start of the B-pillars, creating this really unique shape which was once reserved only for the sporty German offerings. The rear end isn’t bad either. The taillights are connected via this big brake light stretching across the entire lid, and you even get quad exhaust tips in the top of the line GT model. It gets a small diffuser, and that air dam at the front is entirely functional too. As far as looks go, Kia seems to be in a sweet spot at the moment. Compared to something like a 4-Series or even an A5, it just looks light years better.

INTERIOR The Stinger’s interior is by far and away the best interpretation of a cabin Kia has ever done. As soon as you get inside you immediately thing of luxury. The materials are all first class and the build quality is up there with the Japanese rivals. Nothing squeaks or rattles and everything is solid.

The dashboard is simple if a bit boring, but the large infotainment system atop it creates a nice break. There’s also an advanced HUD in front of the driver which can show information such as speed, navigation, audio settings, cruise settings, and blind-spot detection. Despite the low roofline, there’s a ton of headroom in the back even for taller passengers. Legroom is aplenty in both front and rear rows, thanks to that lengthy wheelbase. The seats themselves are super comfortable, especially the ones on the high-end models covered in Napa leather. The driving position is spot on too. You sit nice and low in the car, as you should in any self-proclaimed sporty sedan. The cargo capacity can hold 660 liters, which is more than sufficient for your entire luggage. It features the latest in driver assistive technologies such as lane keep assist and rear cross traffic alert. What more do you need to hear? It’s luxurious, well built, offers plenty of space, and has an even better driving position than its German rivals.

ENGINE I know some of you still have doubts about the Stinger. Now that we get to the actual performance figures, you’re probably thinking it’s going to fall flat on its face. Luckily, it doesn’t. Not in the slightest. Even the entry models come equipped with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder making 255 horsepower and 352 Nm of torque. Our test vehicle comes with a 3.3-liter Biturbo V6 producing an almighty 365 horsepower and 509 Nm of torque. Power is sent to the rear wheels only via an eight-speed auto that Kia developed in-house. You can get the Stinger in AWD format, but for sheer driving excitement, stick with RWD as we have. The transmission is smooth and quick, even on the downshifts. It’s 99.9% as good as Audi and BMW’s dual-clutch versions. We didn’t have an issue with the transmission throughout the entire test, and we drove it harder than most owners are ever going to drive their own personal cars. maqinaonline.com / ISSUE 15 115

WE NEVER THOUGHT WE’D SEE THE DAY A KIA WAS WILLING TO OVERSTEER, BUT THE STINGER IS MORE THAN HAPPY TO DO SO

We never thought we’d see the day a Kia was willing to oversteer, but the Stinger is more than happy to do so. The rear will slide out if provoked even in second and third, but it’s remarkably manageable. The chassis is neutral so you can steer the car with the accelerator. That low center of gravity means you have a really sharp turn-in, followed by a slight hint of oversteer on corner exit. As far as driver’s cars go, the Stinger is as good if not better than the BMW. That’s right, they’ve managed to create something to rival “The Ultimate Driving Machine”.

THEY’VE MANAGED TO CREATE SOMETHING TO RIVAL “THE ULTIMATE DRIVING MACHINE” CONCLUSION

The only reason you wouldn’t buy the Kia is because you’re still not able to gloss over its badge. Objectively, it’s more powerful, faster, better looking and more affordable than any of its competitors. If you still have a bad image of Kia in your head, go take a Stinger GT out for a drive. It will completely rewire your brain and the way you think of Kia, we promise.

FERRARI PORTOFINO A PERFECT COMBINATION OF PERFORMANCE, VERSATILITY AND STYLE

maqinaonline.com / ISSUE 15 121

F E AT U R E

Ferrari is a word synonymous with iconic sports cars and groundbreaking engineering. It is a brand that has motorsports coursing through its veins, courtesty of the legacy of the great Enzo Ferrari, yet is still capable of delivering versatile products that are just at home on the world’s most fashionable streets as they are on the race-track.

The new Portofino is a perfect emodyment of this ability to capture beauty and performance with one product. This new V8 GT looks set to dominate its segment thanks to a perfect combination of outright power and versatility in addition to a level of driving pleasure and on-board comfort unparalleled on the market. Capable of unleashing a massive 600 cv and sprinting from 0 to 200 km/h in just 10.8 seconds, the Ferrari Portofino is the most dynamic convertible to combine the advantages of a retractable hard top, a roomy boot and a generous cockpit space complete with two rear seats suitable for short trips.

The Ferrari Portofino enjoys an illustrious V8 GT lineage and is the descendant of the popular California family, one of the most famous names associated with the Ferrari brand – a model name that oozes heritage from evey vent. With their soft curves, room for a small amount of luggage and easier-going nature of the chassis for those long inter-continental journeys, the California family are some of the most sought after Ferraris ever built.

250 California The first Ferrari to bear the name California was the original V12engined 250 California, an exquisitely designed 2-seater spider produced in 1957, which has become renowned as being one of the greatest examples of automotive design of all time. Scaglietti built around 100 of these, some with aluminium bodies, and examples now fetch millions at auction. Long-wheelbase versions were built between 1958 and 1960 before being replaced by the shortwheelbase version.

122 ISSUE 15 / maqinaonline.com

F E AT U R E

365 California Following in its footsteps was the equally impressive 365 California, less than 20 were ever built between 1966 and 1967. The exclusive nature of these Ferraris ensured that California became a hallowed name.

California T The Italian company unveiled a modern day reiteration of the California at the 2008 Paris Motor Show which evolved into the California T, launched in 2014. This incarnation of the hard-top convertible boasted a new turbocharged V8, joining models such as the 1984 GTO and 1987 F40, hence the ‘T’ in the moniker. The Ferrari California T’s modern design gave it a powerful personality in which sportiness and elegance meld in the classically seamless way of every Prancing Horse ever built. The design, an elegantly balanced interplay of convex and concave surfaces epitomizes the sublime elegance, sportiness, versatility and exclusivity that have distinguished every California model since the 1950s.

California T HS In January 2016, Maranello launched a brand-new Handling Speciale (HS) option for the California T, designed for owners looking for an even sportier driving experience, particularly on challenging, twisty routes.

The Ferrari Portofino The new car, which takes its name from one of the most charming villages on the Italian Riviera, an eponym for stylish elegance, is the most versatile model in the current-day range. A Ferrari designed to be driven every day that also effortlessly converts from an authentic ‘berlinetta’ coupĂŠ to a drop-top capable of delivering a unique Ferrari soundtrack and superb driving pleasure even in day-to-day situations.

Powered by the Ferrari V8 turbo, a member of the engine family that won the overall International Engine of the Year Award in both 2016 and 2017, the new car punches out 600 cv and sprints from 0-200 km/h in just 10.8 seconds. The Ferrari Portofino is, in fact, the most powerful convertible to simultaneously offer a retractable hard top, roomy boot and generous occupant space that also includes two rear seats for short trips.

The retractable hard top (RHT) has been completely redesigned and can now be opened or closed in just 14 seconds on the move at lower speeds, making the car even more practical. Careful modelling of the RHT housing now allows the luggage compartment to hold two cabin trolleys with the roof down and three with the roof up. Ideal for any occasion, the Ferrari Portofino represents the perfect combination of design, performance and technology.

The Ferrari Portofino is significantly lighter with the adoption of new components featuring innovative designs made possible by the use of cutting-edge production techniques. This, combined with a 40 cv higher power output than the California T, has resulted in a significant hike in performance and a corresponding drop in emissions. Vehicle dynamics benefit from the introduction, for the first time on this model, of electric power steering, the 3rd generation electronic differential (E-Diff3) and the latest evolution of the electronic suspension control system (SCM-E) integrated with Premium 9.1 ESP.
