Dear Reader,

In this issue, we head to Monaco to explore the full potential of the most luxurious, and fastest production sedan on earth—the all-new Bentley Flying Spur! In one of Europe’s leading tourist resorts, where better than Monte Carlo to experience the high-end lifestyle that matches up with the quarter-million-dollar Bentley? We drove the Flying Spur all the way to Nice and continued our road trip to the French mountains surely a memorable experience, well beyond anything we expected! Our European trip didn’t end there. We went to Rome to witness the launch of the new Ferrari Roma—the perfect place to unveil a model inspired by Italy’s capital city, and a modern throwback to La Dolce Vita. Moving on from Rome, to Munich where further adventures awaited us. In the home of BMW, we put the third-generation X6 to a proper test. We drove it first on the German Autobahn where we were able to push it to its limits. Luckily, there was no speed limit, and the car’s performance was completely overwhelming! Then, on our way to Austria, we crossed the Alps breathtaking valleys and mountains to reach the Rossfeld Panorama Strasse. I have to admit, BMW X6’s advanced driving assistance systems will blow your mind! Finally, test drives aside, we were honored to have an in-depth interview with Mr. Torsten Müller-Ötvös, the CEO of Rolls-Royce.

Enjoy the issue, TAREK HAWCHAR FOUNDER/MANAGING DIRECTOR

aws dropped when Chevrolet first announced the 2020 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray coupe would accelerate 0 to 100 kmph in less than three seconds with the Z51 Performance Package. Today, the brand confirms the sportscar with the Z51 Package can reach 100 kmph in 2.9 seconds and cross the quarter mile mark in 11.2 seconds at 121 mph (195 kmph). Even without the Z51 Package, a base Stingray, can reach 100 kmph in three seconds flat and cross the quarter mile mark in 11.2 seconds at 123 mph (198 kmph). Performance numbers may vary, as different climates, tire conditions and road surfaces may affect results. “The performance of the 2020 Stingray has far exceeded our expectations,” said Alex MacDonald, Chevrolet vehicle performance manager. “Moving more weight over the rear wheels helps us get off the line quicker, but it’s the integration between the powertrain and chassis that really takes the performance to new levels.”

ROLLS-ROYCE COMPLETES BLACK BADGE FAMILY WITH CULLINAN

A

t the Geneva Motor Show in March 2016, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars presented Black Badge; a permanent Bespoke family of motor cars that defined the taste patterns of an emerging generation of super-luxury consumer. These unapologetic and highly dynamic products responded to those who refused to be defined by traditional codes of luxury and did much to attract new customers to the marque, reassured by Rolls-Royce’s fluency in their bold aesthetic and uncompromising lifestyle requirements. This highly successful alter ego is codified by the mathematical symbol that represents a potential infinity, which is placed discreetly within the motor car’s interior. This marking, known also as the lemniscate, was applied to Sir Malcolm Campbell’s record-breaking Rolls-Royce-powered Blue Bird K3 hydroplane, denoting that it belonged to an insurance class reserved for boats with unlimited and therefore infinite engine power. Rolls-Royce Motor Cars selected this hallmark for Black Badge to reflect its own unrelenting pursuit of power. Rolls-Royce debuted Black Badge with Wraith and Ghost in 2016 followed by Dawn in 2017. Today, the family is completed with the introduction of Black Badge Cullinan: the darkest and most urban statement of Black Badge yet. Cullinan Goes Black Created to satisfy overwhelming demand from younger, more adventurous clients, Cullinan in its silver badge guise, was launched to global acclaim in 2018, immediately becoming the world’s pinnacle super-luxury SUV. Combining luxury in its purest form with genuine practicality and offroad capability, Cullinan unequivocally delivered on the promise of an experience that is Effortless, Everywhere.

10 NEWS

The Rolls-Royce of SUVs did much to reach a new group of clients looking for unfettered access to the world’s wildest places and most enriching experiences. Yet, within this group exists a subset of individuals who seek to subvert the motor car’s domineering presence by permanently cloaking it in the night. Cullinan has conquered the world’s wildest reaches. Now it is time for Black Badge Cullinan to conquer new urban frontiers. Black Badge Cullinan Exterior: The King of the Night While clients can draw on the marque’s 44,000 ‘ready to wear’ paint options or commission an entirely individual Bespoke hue, it is anticipated that many will opt for Black Badge’s signature Black. Multiple layers of paint and lacquer are meticulously applied and hand-polished 10 times at the Home of RollsRoyce in Goodwood, West Sussex, representing the most comprehensive surface finish process ever applied to a solid paint colour. The depth and intensity of Black Badge Cullinan’s coachwork serves as the perfect canvas upon which to throw a contrasting hand-painted Coachline into stark relief. On the prow of the motor car lies the defining expression of Black Badge. The Spirit of Ecstasy mascot, which has taken many forms throughout the marque’s history, is presented in high gloss black chrome. For the first time this finish extends onto its mounting plate, creating the darkest Black Badge yet. This transformation pervades the other symbols of Black Badge. The ‘Double R’ badge on the front, flanks and aft invert to become silver-on-black, while chrome surfaces such as the front grille surround, side frame finishers, boot handle, boot trim, lower air inlet finisher and exhaust pipes are darkened. While they appear black, the vertical grille bars remain polished, reflecting the blackened surfaces that surround them to add a frisson of movement that hints at the motor car’s dynamic intent.

CULLINAN BLACK BADGE

NEWS 11

The overall effect artfully simplifies and enlarges the motor car’s exterior design graphics, emphasising its imposing proportions and confident stance. This is further dramatised by all-new 22-inch forged alloy wheels, reserved exclusively for Black Badge Cullinan. Designed in the Black Badge house style, the gear-like graphic emphasises the model’s vast reserves of power while also recalling an infinitely occurring lemniscate. The gloss black and polished design also creates the perfect stage for the marque’s first ever coloured brake caliper. The high gloss Red paint has been specifically developed to withstand the rigours of elevated temperatures generated by the motor car’s uprated braking system while still offering a perfectly smooth finish befitting of RollsRoyce. Black Badge Cullinan Interior: Superlative comfort. Audacious design Ordinarily, great efforts are expelled to distance occupants from a Rolls-Royce’s mechanical function. However, the marque’s Colour and Trim experts gently sensationalised the engineering substance of Black Badge, seamlessly blending superlative comfort, bold aesthetics, advanced materials and precise, meticulous craftsmanship.

12 NEWS

This ethos is perfectly embodied by Black Badge Cullinan’s Technical Carbon veneer. In the spirit of Sir Henry Royce’s founding philosophy, “When it does not exist, design it”, a collaboration between the marque’s designers, engineers and craftspeople saw the creation of a new luxury material. Inspired by masterpieces of urban architecture, a naked-weave carbon-fibre finish has been developed to create highly accurate repeating geometrical shapes that produce a powerful three-dimensional effect. Each leaf of Technical Carbon is finished with six coats of lacquer before being left to cure for 72 hours then hand-polished to Rolls-Royce’s hallmark mirror finish. This process takes 21 days and is only deemed complete once every piece is inspected by a craftsperson to ensure complete reflective uniformity across each of the 23 pieces within the car. Starlight Headliner has joined historical RollsRoyce iconography such as the Spirit of Ecstasy, Pantheon Grille and ‘Double R’ monogram. Its presence in Black Badge Cullinan intensifies the cabin’s ambience by casting a low light over the lavish leather seats. Presented in fine Black leather, handwoven with 1344 fibre optic lights, it is a true reflection of the sky at night and incorporates eight brilliant white shooting stars that dart at random predominantly over the front occupants, subtly acknowledging the motor car’s owner-driver appeal.

NEWS 13

Reflecting the marque’s Bespoke philosophy, Black Badge Cullinan benefits from a nearinfinitely configurable interior colour palette. Black Badge clients often use interior space as a stage to create dramatic high contrast colourways, so for Cullinan Rolls-Royce’s Colour and Trim designers created a bold new leather colour, Forge Yellow, to offer as part of the brand’s curated collection. As with all leather colours, this can be commissioned for the motor car’s Viewing Suite or incorporated into the design of a highly Bespoke Recreation Module tailored to the client’s exacting specification.

Black Badge Cullinan Engineering. The Architecture of Luxury’s dark side

A final touch completes the interior seating: the Infinity lemniscate motif is embroidered into the fold-down rear arm-rest as an elegant reminder of the power contained within. This simple but potent symbol is also incorporated in the illuminated treadplates and engraved on the brushed and darkened steel clock case. Red-tipped clock hands and instrument display needles also serve as a discreet reminder of the motor car’s dynamic prowess.

Key to the visceral thrill of Black Badge Cullinan is the Architecture of Luxury, Rolls-Royce’s proprietary all-aluminium architecture that debuted with Phantom. The sub-structure not only delivers extraordinary body stiffness but its flexibility and scalability allowed Cullinan to be fitted with all-wheel drive and four-wheel steering in its silver badged guise.

COLOUR & TRIM DESIGNERS CREATED A BOLD NEW LEATHER COLOUR 14 NEWS

Black Badge is far more than an aesthetic treatment. In creating this class of motor car, it was of vital importance for Rolls-Royce to conceive a meticulously considered dynamic personality that perfectly harmonised with the motor car’s remarkable visual identity. Indeed, the exceptionally high expectations of the marque’s clients defined a rigorous testing protocol lasting more than three years to ensure that Black Badge Cullinan was relevant to their needs.

900NM

These dynamic features have been comprehensively exploited and reengineered for Black Badge while retaining the peerless quality of ride that has driven Rolls-Royce’s success.

Black Badge Cullinan benefits from a Bespoke transmission and throttle treatment that creates a sense of urgency without ever undermining its Rolls-Royce peerage. The drive-train, ZF 8-speed gear box and both front and rear steered axles work collaboratively to adjust the levels of engagement depending on throttle and steering inputs. Changes to suspension components and settings add to the suite of dynamic technologies that ensure an appropriate balance between dynamism and refinement. The result is an extremely well-mannered tourer at low speeds and a vivid driver’s device when pressed.

The Architecture of Luxury has been engineered to meet size and weight requirements of different propulsion systems. When the driver presses the ‘Low’ button situated on the gear selection stalk, they unlock Black Badge Cullinan’s full suite of technologies. This is asserted by the proud amplification of the motor car’s 6.75-litre twin-turbocharged V12 through an entirely new exhaust system, announcing its arrival with a deep, authoritative basso profundo. It was deemed unnecessary to make changes to the engine’s ample internal capacity, however the flexibility of the twinturbo V12 has been exploited to generate an extra 29PS creating a total output of 600PS. The sense of a single, infinite gear has also been sensationalised with the addition of a further 50NM of torque, bringing the total to a 900NM.

OF TORQUE

To bolster confidence when exploiting Cullinan’s alter ego, the braking bite point has been raised and pedal travel decreased. Redesigned brake disc ventilation also allows consistency in these changes while braking at elevated temperatures.

VISION GRAN TURISMO UNVEILED IN MONTE-CARLO

A

utomobili Lamborghini presents its new concept car, the Lamborghini Lambo V12 Vision Gran Turismo, ahead of the World Finals of the 2019 FIA Certified Gran Turismo Championships taking place in Monte Carlo, Monaco. The Lambo V12 Vision GT is a highly visionary concept, emphasizing ‘fun to drive’ within the digital environment of the iconic racing game Gran Turismo Sport for Sony PlayStation 4, where it will be virtually available from spring 2020. Stefano Domenicali, Chairman and CEO of Automobili Lamborghini S.p.A. comments: “Lamborghini is a very young brand, and this is why we are here today to present our newest virtual vision in the form of a real model, with a highly futuristic and cool design to be enjoyed by the young generation of racing game and super sports car enthusiasts.” The Lambo V12 Vision GT features a very exciting design produced by Lamborghini Centro Stile in Sant’Agata Bolognese. It is a single seater, which in its virtual form uses the powertrain from the Lamborghini Sián FKP 37.

18 NEWS

The design builds on historic Lamborghini design DNA, expanding the potential of the design language in a very futuristic way. Focused on the single center line, the iconic silhouette of all Lamborghini models, it emphasizes a single seater layout conceived for a racing game where a passenger is not needed. The concept car’s powerful overall design is dedicated to sophisticated aerodynamics. A large wing housing a significant Y-taillight dominates the rear. All elements are designed as high performance surfaces, integrating design and aerodynamics. The main body is disconnected from the fenders, and the hexagon-inspired theme in the side windows is inspired by the Lamborghini Marzal from 1968. The Lambo V12 Vision GT uses the typical Lamborghini Y-signature for both front lights and rear lights. A visionary concept requires an interior design ahead of its time. The driver enters the cabin like a jetfighter pilot, from the front of the car. The main driving controls are located within the futuristic steering wheel and all driver information is projected virtually in front of the driver.

NEWS 19

“The Lambo V12 Vision Gran Turismo is created to provide the ultimate virtual car for young fans and gamers, who are ultra-enthusiastic about Lamborghini and its futuristic aspirations,” said Mitja Borkert, Head of Lamborghini Centro Stile. ”It is an opportunity for the design talent within Lamborghini to stretch its wings and visualize a car that, like every Lamborghini, is a head-turner and the best driving experience, but also mirrors Lamborghini’s push on future technologies, particularly in the arena of lightweight materials and hybridization.”

MERCEDES-AMG GT 4-DOOR COUPÉ THE FIRST FOUR-DOOR SPORTS CAR DELIVERS DRIVING EXPERIENCES IN NEW DIMENSIONS AVAILABLE NOW AT NASSER BIN KHALED AUTOMOBILES

T

he new Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door model delivers driving experiences in new dimensions and extends the AMG model family. It is available now at Nasser Bin Khaled Automobiles, the Authorized General Distributor of Mercedes-Benz in Qatar, in the Mercedes-Benz showroom on Salwa Road. The new coupé is the first four-door sports car from Affalterbach and draws directly on the legendary SLS and AMG GT models of success. As another vehicle developed autonomously by Mercedes-AMG it combines unique design, high comfort and outstanding sports car engineering with an athletic, four-door fastback layout. It thus offers more space and more potential uses. Systematic expansion of the AMG GT family with the 4-door Coupé opens up the sports car segment to those looking for a vehicle for day-to-day use, but unwilling to go without the unparalleled performance of Mercedes-AMG.

22 NEWS

Longitudinal and lateral dynamics at the highest level, and a striking silhouette with classic proportions put the MercedesAMG GT 4 Door Coupé in the portfolio of its two-door brother at first glance. The expressive design with the low bonnet, dominant front and muscular body language emphasizes the sporty genes of the four-door coupé, which sets new standards as the youngest model in the AMG family: as the first four-door AMG GT model combines high everyday comfort with diverse individualization options and the latest sports car engineering. The interior of the first four-door AMG GT model is characterized by elegant coolness and also the latest features: innovative control panels can be intuitively operated and configured as required. The blend of high individualization and sports car technology, placing yet more focus on the requirements of discerning customers, is also clear from the wealth of equipment packages and individual options.

The latest coup from Affalterbach also lives up to the MercedesAMG brand pledge about its high driving dynamics and sets the benchmark in its segment on the racetrack too. Clear at first sight: the AMG GT family membership Clearly recognizable as a member of the AMG GT family, the new AMG GT 4-Door Coupé follows the design philosophy of Sensual Purity. It takes the striking proportions with convex surfaces and a muscular body and develops them to exciting effect for a fourdoor variant of an AMG GT Coupé. The front view with a long bonnet and two powerdomes leaves no doubt that this is the youngest member of the AMG GT family. The 4-door coupé follows the design tradition of the successful AMG GT models: the powerful body exudes dynamism and motivation. Sensuous shapes with convex surfaces lend the fourdoor GT timeless elegance, whilst the flowing silhouette with the lowered greenhouse flags up its sporting credentials.

THE EXCITING AMG 4.0-LITRE V8 BITURBO ENGINE IS ALREADY USED IN NUMEROUS AMG MODELS

As in the AMG GT R radiator shutters, the Airpanel in front of the centre cooling air inlet improves the car’s aerodynamic efficiency. Slim MULTIBEAM LED headlamps, the AMG-specific radiator protection grille, the Shark Nose and the front apron with its enhanced Jet Wing (with a flowing A-Wing on the six-cylinder model) also lend the youngest model from Affalterbach the hallmark presence of the AMG GT family. With frameless side windows and a flat windscreen inclined far to the rear, features of the classic coupé architecture are also cited. With the additional seat row in the rear the characteristic lines of the AMG GT models are not compromised. The tailored upper contours and broad shoulders point to the athletic, sporty orientation of the car, which is additionally emphasized by very pronounced rear wheel arches.

NEWS 23

The rear view of the new 4-door coupĂŠ picks up on familiar features of the AMG GT design idiom: extremely slim LED tail lights define the hallmark boot sill line, the rear aerofoil extendable in several stages not only underscores the family affiliation; it is also an important element of the active aerodynamics. The two eight-cylinder models can be identified through the three horizontal louvres in the side front air intakes, the Jet Wing with its trim element in Silver Shadow, the distinctive diffuser on the tail end and the two-pipe exhaust system with trapezoidal tailpipe trims. The six-cylinder variant, meanwhile, has one louvre in each of the air inlet grilles, round twin tailpipe trims and a somewhat less pronounced rear diffuser.

Top sporting performance: V8 biturbo engines with up to 470 kW (639 hp) The exciting AMG 4.0-litre V8 biturbo engine is already used in numerous AMG models. Its output has been enhanced yet further for the new Mercedes AMG GT 63 S 4MATIC+ (fuel consumption combined 11.2 l/100 km, CO2 emissions combined 257 g/km) and ensures superior performance on a par with a sports car. It delivers 470 kW (639 hp) and a maximum torque of 900 Nm, which is available over a wide engine speed range from 2500 to 4500 rpm. The top engine of the new four-door AMG GT thus exudes effortless superiority in every engine speed range.

Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.2 seconds clearly illustrates this, as does the maximum speed of 315 km/h. In the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 4MATIC+ (fuel consumption combined 11.0 l/100 km, CO2 emissions combined 252-256 g/km) the V8 unit provides 430 kW (585 hp) and 800 Nm maximum torque. The sprint from standstill to 100 km/h lasts just 3.4 seconds, and the top speed is 310 km/h. The AMG 4.0-litre V8 engine works with the proven biturbocharging, where the two exhaust-gas turbochargers are arranged not on the exterior, but between the cylinder banks. The advantages of the “hot inner V” are in the compact engine design and the immediate response of the exhaust-gas turbochargers. Emotive gearshifting experience: the AMG SPEEDSHIFT transmission The AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 9G 9-speed transmission is specially tuned to the requirements of the eightcylinder variants of the new four-door AMG GT. A wet clutch is used here. This reduces weight and inertia and optimizes the response. The extensively tailored software enables extremely short shift times and fast multiple downshifts and delivers an especially emotive gearshifting experience thanks to the double-clutching function. There is also a RACE START function, ensuring optimum acceleration. Direct and immediate: AMG speed-sensitive sports steering The electromechanical speed-sensitive power steering has a variable ratio. It impresses with its precise feedback thanks to the AMG-specific rack-and-pinion steering with a variable ratio. Power assistance also varies between the three stages “Comfort”, “Sport” and “Sport+”. The corresponding characteristic is automatically activated depending on the selected AMG DYNAMIC SELECT transmission mode or can be personalized as required in “Individual” mode.

RACE START FUNCTION, ENSURES OPTIMUM ACCELERATION

Good control and fade-resistant: the AMG high-performance braking systems In line with the high output values and their associated performance the eight-cylinder models have a large-dimensioned brake system consisting of compound discs with 6-piston fixed calipers at the front and single-piston floating brake calipers at the rear. The S variant is characterized by yellow brake calipers, whilst the base variant of the eight-cylinder sports red brake calipers. Space as needed: four or five seats to suit requirements When it comes to the seats, too, Mercedes-AMG proves that comfort and exclusivity need not conflict with a performance-oriented vehicle configuration. The driver’s and front passenger seat can be configured in different scenarios. The selection ranges from the sporty, comfortable seat and a seat with elegant diamond quilting to an extremely contoured performance seat with an integral head restraint. The four-door AMG GT also offers different seating configurations to meet all demands for the rear, too. These range from an asymmetrically folding rear bench seat for the family to two variants with two individual seats respectively.

Ferrari Roma la Nuova Dolce Vita

T

34 NEWS

he new Ferrari Roma has been unveiled to the world’s media. The latest coupé from Maranello features timeless and sublimely refined design and has all the power and agility required to guarantee a unique driving experience. Its signature Italian styling is a contemporary reinterpretation of the carefree lifestyle of 1950s and ‘60s Rome, from which it takes its evocative name, Roma.

To guarantee best-in-class performance whilst still retaining the stylistic purity of its bloodline, Ferrari’s engineers developed several leading-edge technologies, most notably a mobile rear spoiler integrated into the rear screen designed to retain the car’s formal elegance when retracted and guarantee the downforce essential for the Ferrari Roma’s extraordinary performance by automatically deploying at high speeds.

Stylistically, the Ferrari Roma is characterised by clean and symbiotic forms. Its beautifully harmonious proportions and elegantly pure, balanced volumes are very much in line with the Ferrari mid-frontengined grand touring tradition of which the 250 GT Berlinetta lusso and 250 GT 2+2 are the most iconic examples, and from which the car takes its inspiration. It embodies an extremely modern design language which underlines its authentic, refined styling. At the same time, its sleek lines retain the sporty vocation shared by all Ferraris.

The Prancing Horse’s new 2+ coupé sports a V8 turbo engine that punches out 620 cv at 7,500 rpm, making it the most powerful in its segment. A member of the V8 family that has won the International Engine of the Year four years in a row, it features Variable Boost Management for instantaneous throttle response.

8speed dual-clutch

With the adoption of Gasoline Particulate Filters, meticulous attention was also focused on the sound of the exhaust system which has been completely redesigned, removing the silencers and introducing new bypass valves.

The mid-front-engined 2+ Ferrari Roma has the best weight/ power ratio in its segment (2.37 kg/cv) which enhances handling dynamics and responsiveness.

TORQUE: 760NM

The car’s new 8-speed dual-clutch gearbox is more compact and 6 kg lighter than its 7-speed predecessor. As well as reducing fuel consumption and emissions, shifts are faster and smoother which makes the car even more responsive on the open road, but also especially comfortable in town and during stop & start driving situations. The Ferrari Roma’s chassis benefits from the modular technology developed by Ferrari for its new generation models. Both bodyshell and chassis have been redesigned to incorporate the latest weight reduction and advanced production technologies. In fact, 70% of its components are entirely new.

The Ferrari Roma features Ferrari’s cutting-edge vehicle dynamics systems, the most notable example being the Side Slip Control 6.0 (a first on a Ferrari GT car) with 5-position manettino and Ferrari Dynamic Enhancer which controls yaw angle by hydraulically adjusting brake pressure at the callipers. The approach taken by the Ferrari Styling Centre for the Roma’s exterior centres around clean design and absolute symbiosis between its various elements with harmonious proportions and pure, elegant volumes. The car is clothed in long, ultra-sleek lines that sweep back from the front bonnet, highlighting the spare silhouette of the flanks and the compact, set-back fastback cabin volume.

NEWS 35

To underscore that formal minimalism, all superfluous detailing has been removed: for example, radiator cooling is guaranteed by a monolithic surface that is perforated only where necessary, creating a new radiator grille concept. The full-LED adaptive headlights are traversed by a horizontal light strip that hints at the structure beneath the car’s skin, bringing a sense of tension to the entire circumference of the car. The wraparound rear screen incorporates an active aero device to preserve that signature purity of form, while the twin taillight assembly is set like a gem into the volume. For the Ferrari Roma’s cabin, the Ferrari Styling Centre designers developed a new formal approach that involved the creation of two separate cells, one each for driver and passenger, in an evolution of the dual cockpit concept that embraces the entire cabin rather than just the dashboard as was previously the case.

digital instrument cluster The crafting of the interior took its lead from the complete redesign of the HMI. This resulted in a major leap forward, starting with the new steering wheel designed using the “Eyes on the road, hands on the wheel” philosophy with all the car’s main commands actioned by haptic controls, ensuring the driver doesn’t have to move their hands from the wheel. The 16” digital instrument cluster provides all the necessary information, while the central display with an 8.4” vertical screen and a new passenger display are exceptionally intuitive and user-friendly. The new Ferrari key with “Comfort Access” function allows the driver to open the car by touching a button next to the new flush handle in the door. Lastly, the Matrix LED headlights and optional Ferrari advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), including adaptive Cruise Control, make day-to-day and longer journeys a very relaxing experience. Emotional and highly dynamic

the design of the

2020 MINI

John Cooper Works GP Limited Edition T

he MINI John Cooper Works GP distils the racing essence of the modern MINI. Inspired by the brand’s legendary motor racing achievements, this model – limited to just 3,000 units – embodies maximum performance and uncompromising dynamics. This can be seen instantly in the car’s design: a purist yet highly emotional exterior and interior visualise the GP genes more radically than ever before. The MINI John Cooper Works GP follows on from the likewise limited-edition John Cooper Works GP small series of 2013 and 2006.

38 NEWS

The exterior – emotionally designed top-level performance. The flat front section with its wide track, large front apron, flared wheel arches and a rear wing visible even from the front instantly conveys uncompromising dynamic performance. Classic MINI icons such as the elliptical headlights and the hexagonal radiator grille ensure a clear-cut sense of identity and high recognition value. At the same time, characteristic John Cooper Works elements such as the hood scoop in the bonnet and the hexagonal honeycomb grille with GP logo in the radiator grille underscore the sporty perception of the front.

The side view of the MINI John Cooper Works GP reveals the sportiest MINI silhouette to date. The interplay between the narrowing window area and the rising shoulder line traces a wedge shape at the side that gives the impression of acceleration even when the car is stationary. Below this, voluminous surfaces form a powerful vehicle corpus. The large front apron and large roof spoiler give the side view maximum sporty flair as well as ensuring aerodynamic optimum performance. The exterior paint finish Racing Grey metallic alternates between light grey and blue-violet, creating a powerful sense of depth, while the roof and mirror caps are finished in Melting Silver.

All typical chrome elements at the front, side and rear such as MINI logos, door handles, fuel filler cap, side scuttle and headlight surrounds are finished in high-gloss black in this small-scale series. Racing feeling with striking colour accentuations and carbon fibre elements. Deliberate MINImalism in terms of form and colour focuses on technology, further emphasised by coloured accentuations in high-gloss Chili Red and matt Rosso metallic.

The use of lightweight materials such as carbon fibre optimises the power-to-weight ratio, while the highly optimised axle load distribution promises the hallmark MINI go-kart feeling. The absolute highlight in the side view are the attached wheel arch covers – so-called spats – which are made of carbon fibre. Elaborately hand-crafted recycled carbon fleece from the Landshut plant is used here. For the first time, the carbon fibre fabric is directly visible and showcased by means of black hexagon stitching. Meanwhile the numbering in the front spat shows the small-series production number. The 18” lightweight forged wheels in bi-colour design interpret the striking fourspoke theme of the MINI John Cooper Works GP in filigree style. It is the lightest 18” forged wheel ever to feature in the MINI, making a significant contribution to weight reduction. The rear section echoes the distinctive front and side design. The expressive roof spoiler is not only a statement in sporty styling: its shape also ensures optimum downforce and fits in perfectly with the geometry. The same goes for the air diffusers and air ducting surfaces in the apron. Prominently placed at the centre of the lower rear area, the classic double tailpipe embodies the John Cooper Works DNA. The bright stainless steel double tailpipes are manufactured with the largest possible diameter and protrude powerfully and puristically from the diffuser. The interior – pure racing style. The interior of the MINI John Cooper Works GP combines purist sporty flair with powerful colour accentuations. The dark colour and material concept creates a reduced, sporty basic mood, with high-quality, deliberately coloured details at selected points. In the driver area, the new free-standing digital instrument cluster on the steering column puts the relevant information in the driver’s field of vision as required by the situation at hand. 3D printing in detail. The latest production techniques such as 3D printing round off the special interior experience. A striking highlight from the driver’s perspective are the aluminium shift paddles on the sports steering wheel – manufactured using 3D printing. They echo the hexagonal theme from the exterior in the form of filigree breakthroughs. The shift paddles are a prominent element in the interior of the MINI John Cooper Works GP in terms of both appearance and new improved haptics and are featured in this form for the first time in a MINI. Another new element is the 3D-printed steering wheel clasp and the individual decorative trim strip in the passenger area. Each decorative trim strip is unique and bears the vehicle’s limitededition production number.

40 NEWS

Their GP-specific hexagonal structure echoes the surface structure of the shift paddles. In this way, MINI demonstrates a whole new dimension of how 3D printing can be integrated in the serial production process. The use of additive processes such as 3D printing not only raises customisation to a new level, it also enables entirely new forms of design style that were not previously possible using conventional tools. Minimalistic rear area. The MINI John Cooper Works GP does not have a rear seat, as was the case in the predecessor models, with preference instead being given to achieving the lowest possible overall weight. The clear and tidy surfaces of the rear compartment also reflect a reduction to the essentials. The large “GP” lettering in the rear panel is achieved by the use of different grains and gives the interior a striking, novel accentuation. Behind the front seats, a red cross-brace generates a racing atmosphere.

Nasser Bin Khaled Automobiles launches new

Mercedes-Benz CLA Coupé in Qatar

N

asser Bin Khaled Automobiles, the authorized general distributor of Mercedes-Benz in Qatar, launched the new Mercedes-Benz CLA four-door Coupé at Mercedes-Benz showroom on Salwa Road. The new Mercedes-Benz CLA Coupé is not only the most emotional vehicle in its class, it is also highly intelligent: from MBUX Interior Assist, which recognises operational demands from gestures and equips the interior with intelligence, through augmented reality for navigation and understanding indirect voice commands to the ENERGIZING COACH that provides individual fitness recommendations, the new CLA offers an array of clever solutions. There are also ingenious details when it comes to the aerodynamics and new functions for the Intelligent Drive driving assistance package. The design underlines the coupé character with its stretched form and design elements such as the bonnet with powerdomes or the rear licence plate which has been moved down. As such it does justice to its predecessor’s status as a design icon. HE Sheikh Faleh Bin Nawaf Al Thani, Operations Director- Auto, Nasser Bin Khaled group said: “We, at NBK Automobiles, are proud to be one of the first dealers who launch this new car in the region. With new Mercedes-Benz CLA, we go to the next level with an intelligent interior assistance system for the compact class and a great deal of automotive intelligence. This clearly demonstrates our commitment to be the pioneers in launching the most modern cars which meets the demands of our custiomers”. Mr. Ihab El-Feky, Chief Operations Officer – Automotive, Nasser Bin Khaled Group commented: “The new edition of the CLA has been developed further in an intelligent way and is even more emotional and sportier than its predecessor. Coupled with new operating systems, it sets new benchmarks for the entire class. We are confident that our customers will like this car, thanks to its distinctive features, luxury and sporty design as a four-door coupé. These exceptional designs from Mercedes-Benz are becoming a trademark of this leading brand”. Design: pure emotion As a four-door coupé, the new CLA intrigues with its puristic, seductive design and sets new standards in the design DNA of ‘sensual purity’. It impresses with its perfect proportions reflecting the first design sketch: a long, stretched bonnet, a compact greenhouse, a wide track with exposed wheel arches and our typical GT rear end with a strong distinctive ‘Coke-bottle shoulder’. In short - the CLA Coupé has the potential to become a modern design icon.

42 NEWS

The combination of the long, stretched entry line above the windows and frameless doors give the CLA Coupé its unmistakeable sporty and elegant character. Forming the front end is the striking front section which is raked forwards like a shark nose with a long, stretched bonnet featuring powerdomes. Flat headlamps together with the low-slung bonnet and the diamond radiator grille with central star create the vehicle’s sporty face. The two-piece, narrow tail lamps and the number plate housed in the bumper make the rear of the CLA look especially wide. With the greenhouse moved back, the sporty GT rear achieves a balance between elegance and sportiness. Featuring pared-down lines, the precisely modelled side profile provides an interesting interplay of light and shade. Dispensing with the upper shaped edge of the side wall permits extremely muscular and athletic shoulder shaping, stretching from the front wheel arch through to the sculptured rear. Flush with the outer edge of the body, the wheels with their flared wheel arches and wide track epitomise dynamism and give the vehicle a sporty presence. In the interior, all elements are arranged according to the overarching design themes of ‘high tech’ and ‘youthful avant-garde’ – be that the steering wheel, the door handle operating module, the centre console or the seats. As in the A Class, the unique interior architecture is shaped in particular by the avantgarde design of the dashboard: The designers completely dispensed with a cowl above the cockpit. As a result, the wing-shaped main body of the dashboard extends from one front door to the other with no visual discontinuity. The widescreen display is completely free-standing. The lower section is visually separated from the main body of the instrument cluster by a ‘trench’, and it appears to float in front of the instrument cluster. The ambient lighting enhances this effect. The air vents in a sporty turbine-look are another highlight. Drive system: start with the most powerful engine The CLA is equipped with the powerful four-cylinder petrol engine (165 kW/224 hp, 350 Nm) with 7G-DCT dual-clutch transmission (combined fuel consumption 5.9-6.4 l/100 km, combined CO2 emissions 135-146 g/km). Suspension: exceptionally agile and yet comfortable In terms of driving dynamics, too, the new CLA keeps the promise of its design: A wide track and a lower centre of gravity are the two key features which give the CLA the sportiest driving characteristics of all models in the new generation of compacts from Mercedes-Benz.

NEWS 43

The technical specification includes a decoupled multi-link axle at the rear for reduced noise and vibration, a DirectSteer system as standard and hydromounts at the front. A stabiliser bar with a larger diameter reduces body roll. As an option, an active adaptive damping system is available, giving the driver the choice between comfort or a more uncompromising sporty tuning. The ESP® has been specially adapted to the CLA’s potentially high cornering speeds and handling performance. One year since the première: MBUX keeps on learning One year ago, MBUX – the Mercedes-Benz User Experience – created a furore at its world première at CES in Las Vegas. A powerful computer, brilliant screens and graphics, customisable display, full colour Head-up Display, navigation with augmented reality, software that can learn and “Hey Mercedes” – the keyword for voice control that explodes conventional automotive standards. This is how MercedesBenz is revolutionising car operation and communication with it. Now the company is igniting the next level. MBUX Interior Assist facilitates natural operation. The voice control feature now recognises topical answers in a growing number of domains. Due to ongoing development of the system, it is also possible to take into consideration country-specific content providers.

Aerodynamics: intelligent solutions intelligently designed On the way to series production, the aerodynamics of the new CLA underwent a considerably longer phase of optimisation than its predecessor in the form of simulations, before the first measurements of models were carried out in the wind tunnel. Totally new are the wheel-arch spoilers with their fins in the longitudinal direction; they help air to flow around the wheels with minimal losses. Aerodynamic finessing was also performed on the wheels and tyres – both for the regular wheel-tyre combinations and for what are known as aero wheels, which have been completely redesigned to achieve the best possible aerodynamic values and which also look attractive.

“Hey Mercedes”: better understanding and even cleverer responses State-of-the-art of voice control can also be experienced in the CLA. Here too seat recognition has been implemented. The voice assistance only responds to the commands of the person who last said ‘Hey Mercedes’ to activate the system. There is also a growing number of domains for which MBUX can understand complex questions and quickly reply.

Intelligent Drive: functions from the S-Class The CLA has the very latest driving assistance systems with cooperative driver support, and thus provides the highest level of active safety in this segment with functions adopted from the S Class. For the first time, the CLA is able to drive semi-autonomously in certain situations. To do this, it keeps a close eye on the traffic situation. Improved camera and radar systems allow it to see up to 500 metres ahead. The CLA also uses map and navigation data for assistance functions. On board, there are also Active Emergency Stop Assist and intuitively understandable Active Lane Change Assist. The new CLA comes with enhanced Active Brake Assist as standard. Depending on the situation, it can effectively help to mitigate the consequences of rear-end collisions with slower-moving, stopping or stationary vehicles ahead, and even with crossing pedestrians and cyclists, or to prevent them altogether.

ENERGIZING comfort control: wellness while driving ENERGIZING comfort control links various comfort systems in the vehicle. The intelligent recommendations from the ENERGIZING COACH in the ENERGIZING Package Plus are completely new. In general, the ENERGIZING comfort control systematically uses the functions of the air conditioning system and the seats (heater, ventilation, massage) as well as lighting and musical moods, and enables a specific wellness set-up tailored to the mood and need of the customer.

Active Lane Keeping Assist (likewise standard) is able to warn the driver by means of pulsed vibrations in the steering wheel when the vehicle is unintentionally drifting out of its lane at speeds between 60 and 200 km/h. If the vehicle passes over a solid line, it can pull the vehicle back into lane by applying the brakes on one side. In the case of a dotted line, such intervention takes place only when there is a danger of collision with a vehicle in the adjacent lane (including danger from oncoming traffic).

ENERGIZING packages: the next step in intelligent comfort ENERGIZING packages with the ENERGIZING COACH are new. This service based on an intelligent algorithm recommends one of the ENERGIZING packages’ programmes depending on the situation and individual.

PRE-SAFE® PLUS can recognise an imminent rear-end collision. If the danger of a collision persists, the system can also firmly apply the brakes of the stationary vehicle, thus lowering the risk of injuries by reducing the forward jolt caused by an impact from the rear.

MBUX Interior Assist: an even greater experience By recognising movements MBUX Interior Assist brings added intelligence to the interior. Thanks to innovative technology, MBUX now supports the occupants by making various comfort and MBUX functions even simpler and more intuitive. Interior Assist operates in non-contact mode and functions both in sunlight and in complete darkness.

The Mercedes-Benz vivoactive® 3 Smartwatch has its world première at CES. If it or another compatible Garmin® wearable is worn, personal stats such as stress level or quality of sleep optimise the accuracy of the recommendation. The aim is for passengers to feel well and relaxed even during demanding or monotonous journeys. In addition, the pulse rate supplied by the integrated Garmin wearable is shown on the media display.

The BMW i brand’s first Gran Coupé accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in around 4.0 seconds, achieving a top speed of more than 200 km/h. A flexible vehicle architecture, the flat, low-positioned highvoltage battery and the compact drive technology create a high degree of freedom in realising a model-specific design. The BMW i4 combines the characteristic proportions of a 4-door coupé with the typical design features of a BMW i model. Dynamically stretched lines and a precise surface design go hand in hand with aerodynamically optimised exterior features as well as sustainability accentuations that are specific to BMW i. High entry and exit comfort for the rear passengers and a spacious, variable interior ensure high suitability for both day-to-day trips and long-distance travel. As such, the BMW i4 can be clearly identified as a BMW Gran Coupé – and equally clearly as an electrically powered vehicle. Modular, flexible drive and battery storage technology. The electric drive component of the BMW i4, its charging unit and high-voltage battery are all developed in-house by the BMW Group. Production is carried out in-house or according to BMW Group specifications. Here, the experience gained from development of the previous generations of BMW eDrive technology is consistently tapped into with the aim of optimising all components on an ongoing basis.

NEWS 51

The BMW Group’s comprehensive expertise in the field of electrified drive systems forms the basis for a scalable modular system whose components can be integrated into different vehicle concepts with great flexibility. Fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology comprises a highly integrated drive system in which the electric motor, transmission and power electronics are accommodated in a single housing. This drive system is compatible with all vehicle concepts and will be available for different models in a range of output levels. The highly integrated design of the system allows a significant increase in power density as well as a reduction in weight and manufacturing effort. Production of future-generation electric motors will no longer require materials categorised as rare earths.

52 NEWS

The next generation charging unit is characterised by a uniform package suitable for all future vehicle architectures. It can be used in plug-in hybrid models as well as in purely electrically powered vehicles and is designed for a charging capacity of up to 150 kW. This allows the high-voltage battery of the BMW i4 to be charged to around 80 per cent of its full energy content in around 35 minutes. This results in a charging time of around six minutes for a range of 100 kilometres. In the field of high-voltage batteries, too, the advancements introduced with the fifth generation of BMW eDrive technology are based on the BMW Group’s in-depth expertise and years of experience. The company has an exceptionally high level of know-how both in the field of battery cell technology and in the manufacture of model-specific high-voltage batteries.

This lays the foundation for continuous optimisation of the batteries – both in future plug-in hybrid models and in purely electrically powered vehicles. The BMW Group has been manufacturing modules and model-specific high-voltage batteries for vehicles with electrified drive systems since 2013. An independently developed modular system with a flexible arrangement of the modules enables integration of batteries developed in-house into various vehicle concepts.

With the establishment of the Battery Cell Competence Centre in Munich, the BMW Group has further expanded its research and development expertise in this area, which is crucial to the future of electromobility. The focus is on fundamental research in areas where there is an impact on customer-related factors such as energy density, accessible peak output, service life, safety, charging characteristics, response at different temperatures and manufacturing costs.

Consistent ongoing development work is dedicated to optimising the basic characteristics of the battery cells as well as the structure of the modules and their arrangement in the respective model-specific storage unit. For example, the batteries used in the BMW i4 and other future electric vehicles have a higher number of cells per module, a reduced number of components, a more compact design and increased flexibility with regard to their geometry.

At the new Battery Cell Competence Centre, research is being conducted in particular into the potential for further optimisation of cell chemistry and cell design. The selection and composition of materials for the anode, cathode, electrolyte and separator as well as the format of the battery cells made of these materials will have a key impact on the quality of high-voltage batteries used in future models with electrified propulsion.

Mercedes-Benz Sprinter impresses with its progressive design plus comfort and safety features at passenger car level

N

asser Bin Khaled (NBK) Automobiles, the Authorised General Distributor of Mercedes-Benz in Qatar, presents the all-new Mercedes-Benz Sprinter in Qatar. It is available now at Mercedes-Benz showroom on Salwa Road. The new Sprinter elevates the benchmark for the large van segment, offering an innovative and diverse range of product features that serves specific market needs more effectively than ever before. Through its technology and intelligence, the new Sprinter offers every customer a model tailored precisely to his or her needs. The 2019 Sprinter transitions from a commercial vehicle with pure utility value to an impressive business card for commercial fleets and businesses. It pioneers the new design idiom of Mercedes-Benz Vans and embodies the inherent emotional appeal and intelligence. The Sprinter has different priorities dependent on the customers’ needs and requirements. Ranging from the basic specification variant for customers who value proven Sprinter attributes such as standard-fit electronic stability program (ESP) and standard safety equipment like Crosswind Assist, through to the highest specification model where high-resolution touchscreens and highquality materials determine the visual impression and ambience. The stowage compartment concept exemplifies the adaptability of the interior. A choice of open or closed compartments, and a lockable compartment within the roof liner in the cockpit area, enable the configuration to be tailored precisely to the given requirements for the workplace behind the wheel. Air Conditioning System The desire for multiple individualisation options is continued in the temperature regulation, with a new advanced air conditioning system ideal for the MENA region. Found in a separate control panel below the display for the telematic system, the modular construction of the ventilation system allows both the integration of a standard heating system and the use of a roof-mounted air conditioning system with a separate cooling circuit e.g. for passenger transport in hot countries. The highperformance overhead air conditioning system supplements the air conditioning at the front to up to 7 kW with an additional 11 kW of rear cooling output, both running on independent circuits, to reach a possible combined total of 18 kW to deliver the ultimate in climate comfort in the passenger compartment.

56 NEWS

The powerful one-zone automatic climate control system THERMOTRONIC automatically regulates the fan, air distribution and temperature to the comfort level of a passenger car. Modern safety and assistance systems The new Sprinter is completely dedicated to safety: supporting Mercedes-Benz Vans’ role as a driver of innovation and a pioneer in the introduction of modern safety technologies in the large van segment. Modern safety and assistance systems play a particularly important role in this segment throughout the region, as commercially used vehicles are often in operation on a daily basis, covering long mileages and must remain controllable even at the limits despite their relatively large dimensions. With the presentation of the new Sprinter, a whole range of optional safety and assistance systems is now available from MercedesBenz Vans that were previously maintained within the passenger car series. These include the radar-based distance control system DISTRONIC, Active Brake Assist and Active Lane Keeping Assist. The Sprinter comes also with standard-fit Crosswind Assist, Active Brake Assist and Lane Keeping Assist. 3 camera solutions, from the reversing camera with rear view mirror display to the 360 degrees camera, are optionally available to further enhance the good overall view from the cockpit. The optionally available LED high performance headlamps provide for optimum illumination of the carriageway in dark. Standard fit airbag can help the driver in a collision. An additional 5 airbags are optionally available for driver and co-driver. The exterior: Impressive business card for fleets and businesses The exterior of the Sprinter has a new sensual design without compromising its role to support business needs and requirements. Vehicles in modern fleets are increasingly being given the role of company representatives, whereby the Mercedes-Benz design strategy, established in the passenger car sector, creates the basis for this. Load area: metal panelling, lightweight plastic flooring or heavyduty wood flooring When it comes to the load compartment, the most important decisions for subsequent areas involves the choice of vehicle model, cab design, body length and tonnage.

Depending on the type of model, the load compartment too can be independently adapted to suit the purpose and business model of the user. The Sprinter Tourer can accommodate up to 8 people plus driver. With the longest of the 4 vehicle lengths and the highest roofs, the Sprinter Panel Van offers a load compartment volume of up to 17 m3. When necessary, a trailer load of up to 3500 kg can additionally be attached with a permissible gross combination weight of up to 8750 kg. With over 600 items of optional equipment, including special fleet and suspension solutions, the sprinter can be adapted precisely to your requirements. The new Sprinter is also the leader for payload. Three wheelbases, three vehicle heights and various body variants: variability and versatility are also among the most important attributes of the new Sprinter when it comes to load capacity. Engines and transmissions The four-cylinder diesel engine, available with Euro V emission standards and suitable for Qatar fuel characteristics, has a displacement of 2.1 litres with rear-wheel drive generating with 120 kW (163 hp). Friction losses in the engines and belt drive have been reduced to optimise the efficiency and service life of the four-cylinder engine family. This results in high torque and great flexibility even at low speeds.

NEWS 57

The 7G-TRONIC PLUS automatic transmission is also available for the Sprinter for the first time combining exceptionally smooth gearshifts with exemplary fuel efficiency and relieves the driver of manual gear-changing with KEYLESS START as an option. The seven close-ratio gears keep the engine speed as low as possible in every driving situation. This has a positive effect on the fuel consumption and improves noise reduction. The transmission operated via the gear shift paddles behind the steering wheel spokes allow shifting gears manually as well. Diverse drive variants Rear-wheel or all-wheel drive, the new Sprinter covers two drive variants, and can therefore be optimally configured for the relevant transport requirement and operating profile. In the rear-wheel drive variants that are available throughout the region, thanks to separation of the drive and steering, the classic advantages lie in optimum ride comfort, a smaller turning circle and more agile handling. Rear-wheel drive also allows more control when towing a trailer and at the limits of the maximum permissible gross vehicle weight. 4ETS (Electronic Traction System), a feature available throughout the Mercedes-Benz product portfolio with engageable all-wheel drive, performs the task of up to three differential locks – rear, front and centre - through the automatic application of the brake system to a low traction spinning wheel. It applies a series of short brake pulses while consequently increasing the drive torque at the wheels with good traction. The interior: dramatic contrasts and a harmonious overall impression The interior also follows the design philosophy of “sensual purity”. Characteristic features include the contrast between the gentle, emotional, yet clear lines along the larger surface areas in the cockpit which has also been revamped. It is boasting a winning combination of high quality design and outstanding functionality with the intelligent modular stowage compartment concept and KEYLESS START, as well as technically and visually precise details such as the air vents or the MBUX multimedia system. Intuitive control concept for the entire cockpit The infotainment system is just one example of the completely new control and display logic in the cockpit. As it is already familiar from the passenger car model series, the instrument cluster with a large display consolidates all the control lamps between the speedometer and rev counter. The instrument cluster is controlled via the touchpad on the left side of the multifunction steering wheel. This is also where the cruise control and distance assistant DISTRONIC are switched on and off.

58 NEWS

The touchpad that completely controls the MBUX multimedia system is located on the right side of the multifunction steering wheel. Ergonomically shaped seats for a crewbus or VIP shuttle For passenger transport, the new Sprinter is available with different configurations in the passenger compartment and different equipment variants for the seating. The seats can be optionally equipped with an armrest, four-way head restraint and backrest angle adjustment, and if required can also feature USB charging sockets and stowage space for smartphones, suitable for luxurious and professional passenger transport solutions. The newly designed seats allow a posture that relieves back strain and can be precisely adjusted to suit the needs of the driver. The optional memory function for electric seat adjustments particularly shows its advantages in pool vehicles with several users. With Easy Mounting, Mercedes-Benz Vans has also developed a new system where individuals can install and remove seat rows from the Sprinter Tourer, without assistance. New Sprinter “Shuttle” lineup portfolio Partnering with Arobus, a renowned bodybuilder solution provider - Mercedes-Benz Vans MENA has converted the Sprinter into a “Shuttle” variant for the Middle East. The Sprinter “Shuttle” lineup comes in three seating configurations from 15 to 22 seats plus the driver. In this segment of operations, the Sprinter “Shuttle” lineup excels in terms of build quality, comfort and ultimate safety. From the three-point seatbelts to the ergonomic design of the seats and the standard high-performance air conditioning system, the Sprinter “Shuttle” lineup provides the ultimate solution for high-end professional passenger transport. As climate control is of utmost importance in people-movers, the Sprinter “Shuttle” lineup offers upgraded heat isolation through premium insulation technology applied through all surfaces of the vehicle. The sliding door with optimised entrance dimensions, facilitates less air to get in and out of the vehicle, keeping it significantly cooler without compromising the ease of access. The premium isolation technology also creates a pleasant acoustic atmosphere in the interior of the vehicle. This noise reduction is complemented by the fact that the engine is positioned outside of the passenger compartment making this a popular feature in this segment.

onte Carlo, the central quarter of the principality of Monaco, has traditionally been the playground of choice for gamblers and the wealthy. The British luxury carmaker kindly allowed us to drive its newest iteration, the 2020 Bentley Flying Spur, giving us a chance to explore the quarter-million-dollar Bentley on the twisting streets of Monaco—surely a memorable experience, well beyond anything we expected. While the Mulsanne is considered to be Bentley’s most coveted four-door sedan, the Flying Spur is still the volume model. Unveiled in June 2019, the thirdgeneration Flying Spur appears more imposing than the original Continental Flying Spur of 2005 (and even more imposing than the second iteration, which debuted in 2013). The modern look, a revised W12 engine, four-wheel steering, a dual-clutch transmission, and a 333 km/h top speed are only a few of the highlights of the new ultra-luxury, full-size sedan. It is undoubtedly the fastest production sedan on earth! One important thing we noticed about the new Flying Spur is its transformation from a chauffeur-driven vehicle to Bentley’s most driver-focused sedan ever— finally surpassing the Bentley rubric and becoming more of a driver’s car!

The third-generation Flying Spur appears more imposing than the previous iterations Fear not, the “best Bentley Sedan of the modern era” is still a Bentley at its core. The British carmaker has added more modern touches and visual flair to the mix. Now, the third-generation Flying Spur boasts a sportier appearance on the outside, setting it apart from the two-door Continental GT—a tradition that is well worth breaking! Cruising through Monte Carlo’s over-the-top surroundings, along the Route Napoleon—on the steep switchbacks of the Alps—the British high-end sedan handled with excellent agility, and we almost felt we were behind the wheel of a svelte sports coupe! Simply put, the all-new Flying Spur was unexpectedly fun to drive!

exterior From a design standpoint, the 2020 Bentley Flying Spur has an evolutionary design that closely echoes its predecessor. A closer look reveals a handful of subtle styling changes, including the new squared-off grille, which is now wider, taller, and has vertical slats, along with the illuminated Flying B emblem that can be retracted at the touch of a button, and the new cut-crystal LED matrix headlights. The new model also comes with a choice of 21-inch wheels as standard, while customers can opt for a couple of 22-inch wheels sourced from the Mulliner division. Overall, the high-end saloon borrows stylistic cues from its two-door sibling—the all-new Continental GT. As far as the dimensions go, the third-generation Flying Spur is slightly bigger than the previous model. It has an overall length of 5316 mm and measures 1987 mm and 1484 mm in width and height, respectively, with a 3194 mm long wheelbase.

The range-topping model is powered by a revised version of the twin-turbo, 6.0-liter W12 engine that chugs out 626 hp and 900 Nm of torque—an 80 Nm increase over the outgoing Flying Spur W12 S. Hooked to the same eight-speed dual-clutch ZF transmission sending power to the four wheels, the twelve-cylinder unit enables the ultra-luxury sedan to go from zero to 100 km/h in 3.8 seconds before hitting a top speed of 333 km/h, an 8 km/h increase over its predecessor, making it the fastest production sedan ever. Mercedes-Benz CLA 250 Four-door coupe with svelte shape and cutting-edge technology  By: Tarek Hawchar  PHOTOS: MARIA OVSYANNIKOVA

S

ince hitting the streets back in 2013, the first-generation Mercedes-Benz CLA has quickly become a success for the German luxury carmaker, selling about three-quarters of a million units worldwide in under six years. Unveiled at the 2019 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, the second-generation of this four-door coupe is larger, more luxurious, and boasts more high-tech features than the outgoing model. Luckily, we had the chance to explore the full potential of the new Mercedes-Benz CLA 250 on Doha’s roads. The wonderful views and beautiful natural scenery of Doha’s landscapes could not entirely distract our attention from the fact that we were sitting behind the wheel of one of the most stunning four-door coupes available on the market. It was an invigorating and breathtaking ride, highlighted by the excellent performance of the CLA 250’s 221-hp, 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine. Based on the same platform that underpins the latest entry-level, four-door A-Class, the 2020 CLA 250 features remarkable design inside and out, not to mention benefiting from high-end technologies, typically available in its bigger siblings—the E-Class and S-Class models. So, let’s find out more about the new compact CLA 250.

the second-generation CLA is larger, more luxurious, and boasts a plethora of high-tech features exterior Visually, the design of the new Mercedes-Benz CLA 250 adopts the cleaner lines of its bigger sibling—the CLS. However, the compact CLA 250 is not a shrunken down version of the CLS. Among the key exterior features are the sharper LED headlights and taillights, a panoramic glass roof, and 18-inch alloy wheels, to name but a few. As far as the side profile goes, the low sloping roofline, side skirts, and doors are now similar to the new CLS, albeit everything is shorter, meaning the new CLA 250 feels much bulkier, yet although somehow sleeker! Slotting above the A-Class, the new compact CLA 250 is 48 mm longer, 53 mm wider, and 2 mm lower than its predecessor. Meaning the 2020 Mercedes-Benz CLA 250 is 4688 mm long, 1830 mm wide, and 1439 mm tall, with a wheelbase of 2729 mm. The compact four-door coupe has a “drag coefficient” of just 0.23, just behind the A-Class’s 0.22—the lowest figure of any production sedan in the world!

INTERIOR The new Mercedes-Benz CLA 250’s interior is almost identical to the latest A-Class. The cabin does look a better place to sit in than before. The dashboard is dominated by a seven-inch infotainment system touchscreen that is compatible with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. As you can imagine, the interior is completed to a high specification. Highlights include a new three-spoke, leatherwrapped steering wheel, a seven-inch digital instrument cluster, plenty of gloss-black trim, and sports seats, combined with dualzone automatic climate control and a keyless start system. Just like in its luxury siblings, the digital instrument cluster and infotainment screen are set next to each other, as if they are one wide display that runs across half of the dashboard’s width! The 2020 CLA also borrows the A-Class’ 64-color ambient lighting system that sets a moody glow at night! Another important highlight is Mercedes’s new MBUX infotainment system—short for Mercedes-Benz User Experience. Aside from integrating with Mercedes-Benz’s latest touchpad-equipped steering wheel and console-mounted control pad, the MBUX adopts augmented reality technology that allows you to summon a personal assistant by saying, “Hey Mercedes.” Interestingly enough, this system is able to discern voices and keep open a line of communication with the person who initiated the contact, in case there are other voices in the car! Though the rear-passenger space has been largely improved, which translates into more leg, shoulder, and elbow room, the sloping roofline sharply limits the rear-seat headroom! As far as the cargo space goes, the 2020 CLA 250 has a smaller trunk than the previous iteration, but it is still roomier than the Audi A3—the latter offers only 350 liters, while the new CLA 250 offers 460 liters. On the technology front, the new four-door coupe comes with a wide range of driving assistance features as standard such as: emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, speed limit sign recognition, blind-spot monitoring, and an Active Brake Assist system that can automatically slow the car to avoid collisions with other vehicles, bicycles, or pedestrians, among other safety features. review 87

The newcomer sports a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that delivers 221 hp and 349 Nm of torque

It is practical while being powerful at the same time. That’s a rare combination.

ENGINE Under the hood, the new Mercedes-Benz CLA 250 sports a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that delivers 221 hp and 349 Nm of torque. Linked to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission with manual shifting mode, the four-cylinder engine allows the compact CLA 250 to go from zero to 100 km/h in an estimated 6.5 seconds, before hitting a limited top speed of 209 km/h. This new mill pumps an extra 13 hp compared to the old engine, while torque remains unchanged. However, compared to the same unit installed in the A-Class, the CLA 250’s four-banger generates an extra 33 hp and 50 Nm of torque. The base version of the CLA 250 comes with a front-wheel-drive system as standard. Customers can also opt for the CLA 240 4MATIC, which boasts an all-wheel-drive system. Speaking of suspension, it has been revised to improve both handling and ride comfort, featuring a decoupled multi-link axle in the rear, and a direct-steer system in the front. Active damping suspension is also available as an option.

VERDICT The world has dramatically changed since the introduction of the Mercedes-Benz CLA some six years ago, and the second-generation garnered plenty of attention upon its launch earlier in 2019. Since Mercedes-Benz is always very careful not to mess too much with the exterior styling, meaning it doesn’t want to ruin a winning formula, the new CLA 250 declared a victory in other areas, namely the technology front. In a nutshell, the compact four-door coupe comes armed with a fresh design, a stunning interior, best-in-class technology, and a more powerful engine, leaving the competition in the dust!

BMW X6 Redefines the luxury “coupe-over” segment… yet again!  By: Tarek Hawchar

I

n busy, crossover-coupe territory where the likes of Audi Q8, Porsche Cayenne Coupe, and Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe dominate the scene, no other has had an impact on this market segment like the BMW X6.

When it first hit the streets back in 2009, the BMW X6 was successfully introduced to the world as the first-ever “crossover coupe”—a car every luxury automaker has tried to launch! Now in its third generation, the allnew 2020 BMW X6 is aiming to redefine the luxury “coupe-over” segment, once more! Debuted less than a year after the introduction of the fourth-generation X5, the new BMW X6 shares many design elements with its mid-size SUV sibling. Known by the internal code G06, the all-new X6 is more aggressive on the outside, more luxurious inside, and definitely more technically advanced than the outgoing model. We had the chance to climb behind the wheel of this irresistible Sports Activity Coupe (SAC) and discovered what makes the new X6 the perfect SUV for off-road adventures and urban highway roads alike.

The new BMW X6 was aggressive, overwhelmingly powerful, and above all, fun to drive. We put it to a proper test, pushing it in snowy and extreme winter conditions on our road trip from Munich to Austria. Of the many SUVs we drove on the German Autobahn, the new X6 was by far our favorite. With its well-mannered driving dynamics, the high-riding vehicle handled with confident agility while trotting at high speed. The challenge became more difficult when we drove the new X6 on the road in the Eastern Alps—nearly 3,000 meters above sea level. It proved to be a perfect location and a testing ground for this powerful crossover coupe that is worth every penny it cost!

523hp exterior Looking instantly recognizable, the 2020 BMW X6 gains many of the design traits from the latest line of BMW vehicles, particularly the 2019 X5. In an automotive world where massive grilles seem to be the norm, the X6 is no exception. The latter’s new grille is even larger than before, and an optional illuminated grille is also available for the first time. The grille lights up while driving or when the doors are opened or closed. The bold grille is flanked by slender headlights adopting the Laserlight technology, just like its boxier sibling—the X5. The third-generation BMW X6 offers a choice of 19-inch, 20-inch, 21-inch, or 22-inch alloy wheels, depending on the trim level. Other notable design features include attractive LED taillights, a steeply sloping roof, a ventilated rear fascia, a sportier diffuser, and big rectangular exhaust tips, to name but a few. Dimensionally speaking, the new BMW X6 is a tad bigger than before. It now measures 4935 mm long, 2004 mm wide and 1696 mm tall, with a 2975 mm long wheelbase. 92 review

750NM OF TORQUE

ENGINE Under the fresh sheet metal, the 2020 BMW X6 is available in two different powertrains. Just as the X5, the 40i trim level replaces the previous 35i variant and comes with an inline six-cylinder, turbocharged 3-liter engine. This powertrain delivers 335 hp and 447 Nm of torque that allows the “coupe-over” to go from zero to 100 km/h in an estimated 5.4 seconds, before hitting 250 km/h flat out. This engine drives the SUV along just nicely, but if you are looking for more power to cover ground more rapidly, the twin-turbo, 4.4-liter V8 engine is definitely the one to go for.

The 2020 BMW X6 M50i model is equipped with the latter V8 engine, pushing out 523 hp and 750 Nm of torque, allowing you to get from zero to 100 km/h in just 4.3 seconds, before reaching a top speed of 250 km/h. With the V8-powered Bimmer, power is channeled to all four wheels through a ZFsourced eight-speed automatic gearbox. However, the 40i trim is offered with either a rear-wheel-drive or all-wheeldrive system.

The new BMW X6 was aggressive, overwhelmingly powerful, and above all, fun to drive. Customers can also choose a new off-road package that offers a specially tuned air suspension, an electronically controlled M Sport rear differential lock, and four off-road driving modes for snow, sand, gravel or rocky terrain, among other features.

INTERIOR Taking a peep inside the 2020 BMW X6 reveals the similarities with the X5, at least in terms of design and configuration. The new dashboard is dominated by a larger 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen. Similarly, drivers can find an all-digital instrument cluster, aka Live Cockpit Professional that also measures 12.3 inches. Thanks to the new three-spoke, multi-function steering wheel and a center stack that now looks sleeker and cleaner, the new X6’s interior feels even sportier than ever! Better yet, the cabin is fully equipped with Vernasca leather sport seats as standard, and a Sensatec-covered dashboard. The sports seats are standard; however, customers can opt for multi-function front seats with massage function. Despite the sloping roofline, there is enough room in the rear for two average-sized adults. If you are an audiophile, opt for the Bowers & Wilkens Diamond Surround Sound System with 1,500 Watts and 20 speakers.

Thanks to the new three-spoke steering wheel and a center stack that now looks sleeker and cleaner, the new X6’s interior feels even sportier than ever!

The list of options includes four-zone climate control, thermoelectric cup holders, a panoramic glass roof with more than 15,000 illuminated accent points, glass accents, and a head-up display, among others. On the technology front, the Munich-based automaker has installed an assortment of driverfocused technologies into its new crossover coupe, including a blind-spot warning system, a lanedeparture warning system, a front and rear collision warning, a rear crossing traffic warning, and the City Collision Mitigation system. The new BMW X6’s trunk can swallow up to 580 liters of luggage. However, with the rear-seat backrests folded flat, the cargo space is a capacious 1530 liters.

VERDICT One can say that the 2020 BMW X6 has a few advantages over the competition. First, it is available with two different powertrains that have plenty of muscle. Second, though the new X6 is not one of the better-looking coupe-SUVs on the market, when it comes to interior design, luxury, and on-board technology, the third iteration of the luxury SUV is one-step ahead of the competition.

Interview

Torsten Müller-Ötvös ceo, rolls-royce  By: NATALI LEONOVA

98 INTERVIEW

S

ince he took the helm of the world’s most luxurious carmaker in 2010, Torsten MüllerÖtvös has done an amazing job of reinvigorating the British brand—Rolls-Royce. Worldwide sales have been rocketing in the last few years, from 1002 units in 2009 to 4107 cars in 2018. As far as product lines go, Müller-Ötvös has expanded Rolls-Royce’s portfolio to include new models such as the Ghost, another four-door sedan like the Phantom; the Wraith, a two-door coupe; the Dawn, a full-size four-seat convertible; and the new SUV Cullinan. Mr. Müller-Ötvös granted an in-depth interview to Maqina magazine about the sales projections of RollsRoyce in the Middle East, the departure of the brand’s two heads of design, and the shift in Rolls-Royce’s consumers’ attitudes, among other issues.

The entire demography of our clients has changed massively

Q. In the Middle East, Rolls-Royce is seen as a chauffeur-driven brand for older customers; what are the strategies that RollsRoyce has to employ to change this image and become more of a brand for drivers and to appeal to younger buyers? That is quite an old image of Rolls-Royce. It has not been true for quite a while. The vast majority of our clients, particularly here in the Middle East, are self-drivers. That has happened on the back of the launch of the Wraith, the fastback coupe we introduced five years ago, and the Dawn, our favorite convertible, not to mention the Black Badge that helped to increase the number of self-drivers massively. No one would like to be chauffeured in a convertible, a coupe, or a Black Badge. Then, last year, we introduced the Cullinan, which is also very much a drivers’ car or indeed a family car. The entire demography of our clients has changed massively and, for that reason, that image of Rolls-Royce is no longer true. Q. In 2018, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Middle East and Africa (MEA) enjoyed an exceptional year with an impressive 32% increase in sales compared to 2017; do you expect that Rolls-Royce will enjoy another phenomenal year in 2019? I am very confident that will happen. The whole region has become instrumental in our entire global strategy and for our business, particularly on the back of the Cullinan—our SUV that we introduced a year ago. For that reason, I think we will see substantial regional growth this year.

INTERVIEW 99

Far-side crashes are the most commonly overlooked car safety issue that carmakers still don’t pay attention to

We will see substantial growth in the Middle East this year Q. A few weeks ago, Rolls-Royce announced the departure of Jozef Kaban, Head of Design, after just six months in his position, making his stay in Goodwood one of the shortest in recent history, while in June 2018, Giles Taylor also resigned as Rolls-Royce’s Head of Design, what is your comment on that? It is a pity! I was really very sad about that. I had a very good working relationship with these two gentlemen. The decision was not about what happened at Rolls-Royce, but more about how these two gentlemen were tempted by exceptional offers from outside. Imagine that you are sitting at the helm of the design of a brand like Rolls-Royce Motor Cars. Offers for other jobs would be flooding in. In both cases, it was for that reason that they unfortunately left the company. Q. With the advent of electrification and self-driving cars, what do you think is the biggest challenge that Rolls-Royce will face in the coming decade or so? I think electrification is a way forward for our brand. I have already announced that our brand will move to electrification step by step over the next decade. The switch from a traditional internal combustion engine to electrification will not happen overnight. Things will transition smoothly, until Rolls-Royce achieves full electrification. Q. The Middle East used to be the second biggest market for Rolls-Royce worldwide after the U.S. That has changed now. Do you think the Middle East will regain the second- biggestmarket spot once again? Do you think the Cullinan will help the region to become the number two market again? I would say it is not about Rolls-Royce’s Middle East performance, as the performance is really good here in the region. But, it is more about how China has emerged quite massively as our second biggest market worldwide. On that point, our first market is the United States, then China, and the Middle East comes third. That is still a remarkable achievement for our Middle East market.

100 INTERVIEW

The share of women who own a Rolls-Royce has now increased from 1% to 15% Q. Since you were appointed as Rolls-Royce CEO in 2010, have you ever sensed a change in consumer attitudes and trends towards Rolls-Royce’s cars? Massively, I would say! You cannot imagine how the world has changed for ultra-high net-worth individuals over the past decade. The ladies and gentlemen who are our patrons and clients are now far younger, more modern, and more casual than they were ten years ago. They come out of completely different professions now.

Our brand will move to electrification step by step over the next decade

They are self-made business executives, rather than those who have inherited their money. The structure of that group of ultra-high net-worth individuals has changed massively. In addition, there is now a far higher number of powerful women within the ultra-high net-worth group. For our brand, that is a big advantage—the share of women who own a RollsRoyce has now increased from 1% to 15%, and the average age of our buyers has gone down from 56 to 43 years old. These are unbelievable figures. Still, 80% of our clients are CEOs and business owners, while the remaining 20% are prominent people, celebrities, sports stars, and the like. This is a very eclectic mix of amazing clients for Rolls-Royce.

Richard Mille RM 11-04 AUTOMATIC FLYBACK CHRONOGRAPH ROBERTO MANCINI Manager of the Squadra Azzurra, Italy’s national football team, Roberto Mancini is back on home turf after coaching the Saint Petersburg Zenit club for two years, and taking up a new challenge: making Italy the number one football nation in Europe and the world. It is wearing the new RM 11-04 Mancini that Roberto will be shouldering his task and attempting to make the dream of so many ‘tifosis’ come true. Released in 2013, the RM 11-01 Roberto Mancini was born of discussions between the Italian manager and Richard Mille over how to address an issue coaches confront on the field, namely, how much playing time is left in a match? Time... it is a strategic resource and a quantitative reality that can be a source of tremendous stress in this sport. Once time ceases to be displayed on the scoreboard, during extra time, for instance, it keys up anxiety, causing players to lose their bearings and inevitably affecting tactics during play. The idea of creating a mechanical watch with a dedicated dial for tracking half-time, extra time and overtime might seem an obvious one, however, the ingenious display, combined with the availability of a flyback chronograph, gives Roberto complete mastery of time on the playing field: ‘As coaches, it is up to us to guide our players perfectly. That’s why time must be tracked and managed. It is one of the parameters that can mean victory or defeat. Every last minute, every second is precious and carries the potential to overturn the outcome of a match.’ While conceding nothing of the ingenuity that characterised the RM 11-01, the RM 11-04 incorporates the brand’s latest style codes, as seen in the new lines of the crown, its variable-geometry rotor and its ultra-sporty case in Carbon TPT® with raised crenulations. The colours of the Italian flag, Il Tricolore, as well as the official blue shade that gives the Squadra Azzura its nickname are all nods to Roberto’s background, incorporated all around the automatic calibre, which powers a flyback chronograph and annual calendar. They adorn the bezel, crown, pusher-caps and the rubber bracelet, this last with a titanium folding buckle. The new casing presents the grade 5 titanium calibre RMAC3 in an unprecedented new light.
