As the SUV segment evolved and more and more niches started popping up all over the place, we flew all the way to Savannah in the United States of America to experience BMW first 7-seater, the X7. BMW kept us busy, we headed to Faro in Portugal to test drive the 8 Convertible, a sunny Mediterranean country with excellent ribbons of tarmac and arguably one of the best convertibles currently on the market. Later, we drove the new 7-series (2020) and the mix of open roads in Faro with flowing corners, and small, twisty hill bends, gave the new 7-Series a real workout. From Portugal, we went to Nice in France for the Jaguar F-Pace SVR and the XE. Read about what spending a few days with one of the most sought-after crossovers currently taught us. Although nothing came as a great big shock as we expected the F-Pace SVR to be brilliant, a few things did catch us offguard

FERRARI’S V8 TAKES ITS FOURTH CONSECUTIVE INTERNATIONAL ENGINE & POWERTRAIN OF THE YEAR AWARD THE FERRARI ENGINE ALSO TAKES PERFORMANCE ENGINE OF THE YEAR AND TWO OTHER CATEGORIES

T

he 21st edition of the International Engine & Powertrain of the Year has seen Ferrari triumph again, taking the overall title with its 720-cv, 3.9-litre V8 for the fourth year running, a feat never achieved by any other engine in the history of the awards. The 3902 cc V8 engine that powers the 488 GTB, 488 Spider, 488 Pista and 488 Pista Spider took the overall honours and also the Performance Engine award. With this year’s change from capacity categories to power output categories, to ensure a fairer judging of hybrid powertrains,

Ferrari’s V8 took a further two categories: the same engine was voted the best power unit over 650 PS, while the 3855 cc version that powers the Portofino (with 600 cv) and GTC4Lusso T (with 610 cv) was awarded the 550 to 650 PS category. As a result, this year’s ceremony in Stuttgart, Germany saw Ferrari’s tally of International Engine & Powertrain of the Year awards rise to an impressive 31.

HYUNDAI NEXO NAMED A ‘GAME CHANGER’

T

The result is electricity to power the motor and charge the battery, and water vapour, which harmlessly exits through the exhaust. With full tanks of hydrogen on board, NEXO is capable of travelling 414 miles (WLTP), before being able to refuel in just a few minutes.

Mark Tisshaw, Editor of Autocar, said: “Hyundai has become a world leader in advancing alternative fuel technologies, and developing them to production maturity before its rivals. Hot on the heels of its Kona Electric — arguably a game changer itself — Hyundai has quickly launched NEXO, a new, hydrogen-powered SUV you can buy right now. Actually, it’s the latest of several generations of hydrogen fuel cell Hyundais, launched while most car makers are still years behind.”

Outside of its environmentally friendly powertrain, NEXO also has an advanced air purification system which filters 99.9% of very fine dust (PM2.5). The vehicle shows the exact amount of air purified on the display panel in the car. NEXO has also been independently awarded the UL Bio Environmental Seal for the use of bio fibres from sugar cane waste and vegetable plasticisers in the headliner and carpet areas, bio plastics from sugar cane and corn waste in door, seat, pillar and console trims and bio paint extracted from rapeseed and soybean oils for the dashboard and centre console.

he Hyundai NEXO Fuel Cell vehicle has been named as a ‘game changer’ at the annual Autocar awards, in recognition of its trail-blazing zero emissions hydrogen fuel cell technology. Skyline Automotive W.L.L., is the official distribution partner of the Hyundai Motor Company in the State of Qatar.

NEXO’s fuel cell electric powertrain offers the latest in fuel cell electric vehicle technology, with increased performance over its ix35 Fuel Cell predecessor. An on board electric motor produces 163PS, drawing power from an under-bonnet fuel cell stack, which combines oxygen from the surrounding air with hydrogen from NEXO’s high-pressure storage tanks.

The Autocar ‘Game Changer’ awards are handed to cars that bring new, higher standards to a hard-fought class, or for defying conventions to bring unexpected benefit for buyers.

FIVE OUT OF FIVE: NEW RANGE ROVER EVOQUE AWARDED MAXIMUM EUROPEAN SAFETY RATING

T

he new Range Rover Evoque has been awarded a maximum five-star Euro NCAP safety rating, confirming its status as one of the most refined, capable and safe luxury compact SUVs on the market. Not only did the luxury compact SUV score 94 per cent for adult occupant safety – the highest score of any Jaguar or Land Rover product to date – but for those with younger passengers in the back, it also received 87 per cent for child occupant safety. It means the Evoque is the latest Land Rover to be awarded a five-star safety rating by Euro NCAP, following the most recent Range Rover Velar and Land Rover Discovery SUV. Built on Land Rover’s new Premium Transverse Architecture to ensure maximum occupant safety, the new Range Rover Evoque comes with the latest advanced driver assistance features, including Emergency Braking; Lane Keep Assist; Front and Rear Parking Aids; and a Rear Camera as standard, to help avoid road traffic accidents. This combination of features ensured the new Evoque received the full five-star rating in the toughest Euro NCAP testing programme to date. Owners can add to this with the addition of two optional packs. The Park Pack adds Park Assist, 360-degree Parking Aid, Rear Traffic Monitor and Clear Exit Monitor, while the Drive Pack offers Adaptive Cruise Control, Blind Spot Assist and High Speed Emergency Braking,

for convenience and safety wherever the road takes you. In addition, a comprehensive system of airbags and restraints throughout the cabin – including a pedestrian airbag – mean owners can rest assured the luxury compact SUV will protect those inside and outside the vehicle. Finbar McFall, Global Product Marketing Director at Jaguar Land Rover, said: “The Range Rover Evoque is at home in the city and the country, so we added the latest technologies aimed at preventing accidents and a new vehicle architecture to protect occupants in the event of an incident. The result is another five-star performer from Land Rover.” The suite of advanced technologies on the new Range Rover Evoque includes Land Rover’s ClearSight Rear View Mirror. Transforming into an HD video screen at the flick of a switch, it offers a wider 50-degree field of vision and superior low light visibility by displaying a rearfacing camera feed from the top of the car. It is ideal when carrying passengers in the second row or bulky items in the rear loadspace obscure the view behind. ClearSight Ground View technology is also available, effectively making the bonnet invisible by projecting camera imagery onto the upper touchscreen to show the driver a 180-degree view under the front of the vehicle. This is useful when negotiating difficult parking spaces, navigating high city centre kerbs or tackling rough terrain.

The F8 Tributo is the new mid-rear-engined sports car that represents the highest expression of the Prancing Horse’s classic two-seater berlinetta. There are significant improvements across the board aimed at providing even better control on the limit along with greater on-board comfort.

20 ISSUE 16 / maqinaonline.com

In the automotive world, Ferrari’s V8 engine is seen as the very epitome of sportiness and driving pleasure. This is particularly the case when it is mid-rear-mounted in a two-seater. Ferrari has been honing the scope of abilities of this architecture, which creates an optimal weight balance, and thus delivers unparalleled thrillingly sporty driving, to perfection for over four decades. Designed by the Ferrari Styling Centre, the F8 Tributo is essentially a bridge to a new design language that will continue to emphasise Ferrari’s key characteristics of high performance and extreme aerodynamic efficiency. In fact, the F8 Tributo is the most aerodynamically efficient series-production mid-rear-engined berlinetta ever designed. The F8 Tributo features state-of-the-art aerodynamics, integrating innovations and expertise developed thanks to the company’s involvement in the GT and Challenge championships. The solutions have been honed to create a series-production mid-rear-engined berlinetta with the highest level of performance available.

NEWS

It was only through close synergy with the Ferrari Styling Centre that the strict aerodynamic constraints could be so flawlessly interpreted and integrated into the car’s design. A good example is the S-Duct at the front and the redesigned blown spoiler system at the rear which are underscored by the car’s clean yet decisive lines. The cockpit retains the classic, driver-oriented look typical of Ferrari’s mid-rear-engined berlinettas. Every element of the dash, door panels and tunnel has been completely redesigned specifically for the car. The F8 Tributo also boasts a new generation steering wheel and steering wheel-mounted controls as well as new styling on the standard seats. Overall performance levels are significantly higher than those of the 488 GTB, thanks to the increase in power, weight reduction and improved aerodynamic coefficient. That performance is also now accessible to a larger number of drivers thanks to vehicle dynamics systems that make driving on the limit an easier and more confidence-inspiring experience. The Ferrari F8 Tributo is expected to be on the roads later this year and is available only through Alfardan Sports Motors, the official Ferrari importer in Qatar.

and I’m thrilled to introduce our customers to this pioneering feat of engineering,” commented Samer Bou Dargham, General Manager for Alfardan Premier Motors. “The Range Rover Evoque has been fundamental to our global success, and the next iteration of this award-winning vehicle adds to its predecessor’s distinct refinement and confident off-road capabilities,” commented Rob Preston, Sales Director, Jaguar Land Rover MENA. “This launch comes at a pivotal time in Jaguar Land Rover history as we push on with our commitment to manufacture cleaner and smarter vehicles. The latest Evoque, which is built upon our all-new Premium Transverse Architecture, will therefore have the option of electrification, which is a first for the compact luxury SUV segment. By combining the brand’s unrivalled heritage with advancements such as this, we’re meeting the needs of discerning motorists in the Middle East who enjoy the exceptional on and off-road experience the Evoque offers,” he added.

NEWS

Ranger Rover Evoque: The luxury SUV for the city and beyond The new Range Rover Evoque’s distinctive coupé-like silhouette is typified by a unique fast roofline and rising waist that identifies with the Range Rover family. Its outstanding volume and proportions are amplified by pronounced shoulders and powerful wheel arches that, alongside 21-inch wheels, combine to create a strong and dynamic attitude. The introduction of jewel-like elements such as super-slim Matrix LED headlamps provide a more sophisticated front and rear lamp graphic. Meanwhile, flush door handles add to the smooth, sculpted aesthetic, while sweeping directional indicators create a purposeful signature. Optional R-Dynamic details and burnished copper accents add to the unique appeal. Interior Inside, the finely crafted design integrates uncluttered surfaces and simple lines with carefully curated premium materials to create a luxurious, minimalist, digital cabin. Technical textiles utilising recycled plastics are offered as premium alternatives to leather, such as a Kvadrat wool blend and Dinamica® suedecloth, as well as Eucalyptus and Ultrafabrics™ options. The cabin is designed to be a calm and serene space, ensuring comfortable, healthy and happy occupants, with technologies such as the twin touchscreen Touch Pro Duo system featuring new, faster software, 16-way seat controls, and cabin air ionisation that complement the increased interior space. maqinaonline.com / ISSUE 16 27

NEWS

The footprint is almost identical yet built on Land Rover’s new mixed-material Premium Transverse Architecture, which offers more interior space than before. A longer wheelbase yields 20mm extra rear knee room and an increase in small item stowage – the larger glove box and centre cubby can now fit tablets, handbags and bottles with ease. The luggage space is 10 per cent larger (591 litres) as well as much wider, with space increasing to 1,383 litres when the flexible 40:20:40 second-row seats are folded. Engine and performance The new architecture has been developed for electrification with a 48-volt mild-hybrid available at launch. The mild hybrid powertrain is a first for Land Rover and works by harvesting energy normally lost during deceleration thanks to the engine-mounted beltintegrated starter generator, storing it in the under-floor battery. At speeds below 17km/h (11mph), the engine will shut off while the driver applies the brakes. When pulling away, the stored energy is redeployed to assist the engine under acceleration and reduce fuel consumption. The result is a refined, quiet and efficient drive in built-up traffic heavy areas, in addition to efficiency savings. Available across the range of four-cylinder Ingenium petrol, the mild hybrid delivers CO2 emissions from as low as 149g/km and fuel economy from 50.4mpg (5.6l/100km) (based on NEDC Equivalent test procedure). Every bit a Range Rover, the compact SUV combines all-terrain capability with all-weather assurance. The new Evoque features AllWheel Drive, as well as a second-generation Active Driveline with Driveline Disconnect to enhance efficiency and Adaptive Dynamics to deliver the optimum balance of comfort and agility. Terrain Response 2 – technology first found on the full-size Range Rover – automatically detects the surface being driven on and adjusts the set-up accordingly, while Evoque can now wade through water up to 600mm (previously 500mm). Intelligent technology The famed Range Rover command driving position has jumped into the digital age, with a segment-first ‘Clear Sight rear-view mirror’ that transforms into an HD video screen.

28 ISSUE 16 / maqinaonline.com

If rear visibility is compromised by passengers or bulky items, the driver simply flicks a switch on the underside of the mirror and a camera feed from the top of the car displays what is behind the vehicle in crisp high definition. The screen provides a wider (50-degree) field of vision and superior visibility in low light. The new Range Rover Evoque is also the first in the world to feature Ground View technology, which effectively makes the bonnet invisible by projecting camera imagery onto the upper touchscreen to show the driver a 180-degree view under the front of the vehicle. This is useful when negotiating difficult parking spaces, navigating high city centre kerbs or tackling rough terrain, and is the realisation of the Transparent Bonnet technology previewed by Land Rover in 2014. The Evoque is the first Land Rover vehicle with ‘Smart Settings’, which uses artificial intelligence algorithms to learn the driver’s preference and acts as an on-board butler. In addition to seat position, music and climate settings, Evoque can also control steering column preferences to maximise comfort. The Range Rover Evoque is now available for viewing, test drives and to order, at Alfardan Premier Motors showrooms in Qatar with prices starting at QAR 148,200.

HYUNDAI IONIQ ELECTRIC EARNS MAXIMUM FIVE STAR ‘GREEN CAR’ RATING

H

yundai has achieved the maximum possible score in the first official New Car Assessment Program that rates vehicles for their environmental performance. Skyline Automotive W.L.L., is the official distribution partner of the Hyundai Motor Company in the State of Qatar. The inaugural Green NCAP, hosted and supported by the European New Car Assessment Program, rated 12 cars from nine manufacturers, using tests designed to reflect real-world driving conditions. Hyundai’s IONIQ Electric achieved the maximum five stars, with only one other vehicle – the BMW i3 – sharing the highest rating. As an electric vehicle, IONIQ Electric scored 10 out of 10 points in a ‘clean air’ index. It also scored 8.5 out of 10 on an ‘energy efficiency’ index – which reflects the efficiency with which the vehicle converts its energy source into movement. This includes factors such as powertrain losses, aerodynamic drag, tire friction and vehicle mass, which all affect how much energy is used to move the car forward. “Hyundai is making great investments in sustainable mobility, so it is very satisfying to see one of our green models rated so highly for meeting important environmental goals,” said Hyundai’s Head of Operations for the Middle East and Africa Headquarters.

“NCAP testing has transformed road safety by empowering car buyers to make informed purchasing decisions, and the Green NCAP will give consumers the same type of quick and easy reference point when comparing different models for sustainability.” In its assessment, Green NCAP noted that as an all-electric model, the IONIQ Electric’s emissions were zero, and that energy efficiency for the IONIQ is also very good. Testing found that energy consumption did not exceed 20kWh/100km in any of the tests, including in a high-load highway test, demonstrating that full electric propulsion is the greenest means of transportation currently available. The first round of Green NCAP included passenger cars powered either by internal combustion engines or fully electric. It measured four tailpipe emissions that are harmful to human health and the environment, as well as energy efficiency. The organization is refining its testing procedures to consider hybrid vehicles, and intends to include greenhouse gases and ‘whole of life’ ratings – which would include emissions and energy used in manufacturing the vehicles – in the future.

We are happy to introduce it to our valued customer in a private viewing event to be the first who experience it in Qatar.”

50 ISSUE 16 / maqinaonline.com

Mr. Ihab El Feky, Chief operations Officer – Auto, at Nasser Bin Khaled Group commented: “We would like to welcome our distinguished guests at Mercedes-Benz showroom to have the first look at the new amazing 4-door coupé which will be a prominent landmark for the years to come. Sporty, luxurious and spacious, this is what many drivers were looking for, and Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupé is the perfect fit.” The new Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door model delivers driving experiences in new dimensions and extends the AMG model family. The new coupé is the first four-door sports car from Affalterbach and draws directly on the legendary SLS and AMG GT models of success. As another vehicle developed autonomously by MercedesAMG it combines unique design, high comfort and outstanding sports car engineering with an athletic, four-door fastback layout. It thus offers more space and more potential uses.

NEWS

Systematic expansion of the AMG GT family with the 4-door Coupé opens up the sports car segment to those looking for a vehicle for day-to-day use, but unwilling to go without the unparalleled performance of Mercedes-AMG. Longitudinal and lateral dynamics at the highest level, and a striking silhouette with classic proportions put the MercedesAMG GT 4 Door Coupé in the portfolio of its two-door brother at first glance. The expressive design with the low bonnet, dominant front and muscular body language emphasizes the sporty genes of the four-door coupé, which sets new standards as the youngest model in the AMG family: as the first four-door AMG GT model combines high everyday comfort with diverse individualization options and the latest sports car engineering. The interior of the first four-door AMG GT model is characterized by elegant coolness and also the latest features: innovative control panels can be intuitively operated and configured as required. The blend of high individualization and sports car technology, placing yet more focus on the requirements of discerning customers, is also clear from the wealth of equipment packages and individual options. The latest coup from Affalterbach also lives up to the Mercedes-AMG brand pledge about its high driving dynamics and sets the benchmark in its segment on the racetrack too.

Clear at first sight: the AMG GT family membership Clearly recognizable as a member of the AMG GT family, the new AMG GT 4-Door Coupé follows the design philosophy of Sensual Purity. It takes the striking proportions with convex surfaces and a muscular body and develops them to exciting effect for a four-door variant of an AMG GT Coupé. The front view with a long bonnet and two powerdomes leaves no doubt that this is the youngest member of the AMG GT family. The 4-door coupé follows the design tradition of the successful AMG GT models: the powerful body exudes dynamism and motivation. Sensuous shapes with convex surfaces lend the four-door GT timeless elegance, whilst the flowing silhouette with the lowered greenhouse flags up its sporting credentials. As in the AMG GT R radiator shutters, the Airpanel in front of the centre cooling air inlet improves the car’s aerodynamic efficiency. Slim MULTIBEAM LED headlamps, the AMG-specific radiator protection grille, the Shark Nose and the front apron with its enhanced Jet Wing (with a flowing A-Wing on the six-cylinder model) also lend the youngest model from Affalterbach the hallmark presence of the AMG GT family.

With frameless side windows and a flat windscreen inclined far to the rear, features of the classic coupĂŠ architecture are also cited. With the additional seat row in the rear the characteristic lines of the AMG GT models are not compromised. The tailored upper contours and broad shoulders point to the athletic, sporty orientation of the car, which is additionally emphasized by very pronounced rear wheel arches. The rear view of the new 4-door coupĂŠ picks up on familiar features of the AMG GT design idiom: extremely slim LED tail lights define the hallmark boot sill line, the rear aerofoil extendable in several stages not only underscores the family affiliation; it is also an important element of the active aerodynamics. The two eight-cylinder models can be identified through the three horizontal louvres in the side front air intakes, the Jet Wing with its trim element in Silver Shadow, the distinctive diffuser on the tail end and the two-pipe exhaust system with trapezoidal tailpipe trims. The six-cylinder variant, meanwhile, has one louvre in each of the air inlet grilles, round twin tailpipe trims and a somewhat less pronounced rear diffuser.

Top sporting performance: V8 biturbo engines with up to 470 kW (639 hp) The exciting AMG 4.0-litre V8 biturbo engine is already used in numerous AMG models. Its output has been enhanced yet further for the new Mercedes AMG GT 63 S 4MATIC+ (fuel consumption combined 11.2 l/100 km, CO2 emissions combined 257 g/km) and ensures superior performance on a par with a sports car. It delivers 470 kW (639 hp) and a maximum torque of 900 Nm, which is available over a wide engine speed range from 2500 to 4500 rpm. The top engine of the new four-door AMG GT thus exudes effortless superiority in every engine speed range. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.2 seconds clearly illustrates this, as does the maximum speed of 315 km/h. In the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 4MATIC+ (fuel consumption combined 11.0 l/100 km, CO2 emissions combined 252-256 g/ km) the V8 unit provides 430 kW (585 hp) and 800 Nm maximum torque. The sprint from standstill to 100 km/h lasts just 3.4 seconds, and the top speed is 310 km/h.

The AMG 4.0-litre V8 engine works with the proven biturbocharging, where the two exhaust-gas turbochargers are arranged not on the exterior, but between the cylinder banks. The advantages of the “hot inner V” are in the compact engine design and the immediate response of the exhaust-gas turbochargers. Emotive gearshifting experience: the AMG SPEEDSHIFT transmission The AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 9G 9-speed transmission is specially tuned to the requirements of the eight-cylinder variants of the new four-door AMG GT. A wet clutch is used here. This reduces weight and inertia and optimizes the response. The extensively tailored software enables extremely short shift times and fast multiple downshifts and delivers an especially emotive gearshifting experience thanks to the double-clutching function. There is also a RACE START function, ensuring optimum acceleration. Direct and immediate: AMG speed-sensitive sports steering The electromechanical speed-sensitive power steering has a variable ratio. It impresses with its precise feedback thanks to the AMG-specific rack-and-pinion steering with a variable ratio. Power assistance also varies between the three stages “Comfort”, “Sport” and “Sport+”.

The corresponding characteristic is automatically activated depending on the selected AMG DYNAMIC SELECT transmission mode or can be personalized as required in “Individual” mode. Good control and fade-resistant: the AMG high-performance braking systems In line with the high output values and their associated performance the eight-cylinder models have a large-dimensioned brake system consisting of compound discs with 6-piston fixed calipers at the front and single-piston floating brake calipers at the rear. The S variant is characterized by yellow brake calipers, whilst the base variant of the eight-cylinder sports red brake calipers. Space as needed: four or five seats to suit requirements When it comes to the seats, too, Mercedes-AMG proves that comfort and exclusivity need not conflict with a performance-oriented vehicle configuration. The driver’s and front passenger seat can be configured in different scenarios. The selection ranges from the sporty, comfortable seat and a seat with elegant diamond quilting to an extremely contoured performance seat with an integral head restraint. The four-door AMG GT also offers different seating configurations to meet all demands for the rear, too. These range from an asymmetrically folding rear bench seat for the family to two variants with two individual seats respectively.

Q-AUTO CELEBRATE THE ARRIVAL OF THE FIRST

ALL-ELECTRIC CAR FROM AUDI IN QATAR.

64 ISSUE 16 / maqinaonline.com

NEWS

T

he first fully electrically powered series production model from the Audi, has finally arrived in Qatar for an exclusive preview. This full-size SUV is powerful, efficient, sporty and practical for everyday driving and will be available in 2020.

With an impressive and dynamic SUV exterior design, the all-new Audi e-tron has an electrifying appearance, whether standing still or on the move. Its expressive sill area, the electric tailboard and the light grey Single frame are indicators of the high-voltage technology that makes for a special driving experience. The electric SUV is powered by two powerful electric motors that are locally CO2-neutral and virtually silent. A new generation of the quattro drive, the electric all-wheel drive, ensures excellent traction and dynamics. It ensures the continuous and variable regulation of the ideal distribution of drive torques between the two axles – within a fraction of a second. A key factor for the sporty character and outstanding transverse dynamics is the low and central position at which the battery system is installed. It gives the vehicle a range that is suitable for driving long distances. During far more than 90 percent of all decelerations, the Audi e-tron recovers energy solely via its electric motors. The electric SUV taps its maximum recuperation potential in combination with the integrated electrohydraulic brake control system.

Audi is the world’s first carmaker to use such a system in an electrically powered series production vehicle. The cleverly designed aerodynamics also contribute significantly to its efficiency. One highlight of this concept are the optional virtual exterior mirrors – a worldwide first in a series production model. Not only do they reduce aerodynamic drag, they also take digitalization in the vehicle to a whole new level. The Audi e-tron offers the spaciousness and comfort of one of the brand’s typical full-size SUV models. Paired with high-quality materials and fine workmanship, it makes electric mobility a premium experience. This is also ensured by the comprehensive and reliable range of charging options with intelligent solutions for at home and on the go. Mr Ahmad Shariefi, Director of operations at Q-Auto, said “We are very excited here to have the first all-electric Audi in Qatar, and we are looking forward to showing the car to our customers during the month of June and July”. The Audi e-tron rolls off the assembly line at the CO2-neutral plant in Brussels. Initial deliveries to Qatari customers are planned for 2020. maqinaonline.com / ISSUE 16 65

THE FERRARI SF90 STRADALE THE NEW SERIES-PRODUCTION SUPERCAR THE MOST POWERFUL PRANCING HORSE CAR EVER REFERENCES SCUDERIA FERRARI

70 ISSUE 16 / maqinaonline.com

NEWS

F

errari introduces a new chapter in its history with the introduction of its first series production PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle), the SF90 Stradale, images, videos and information on which can be seen on the dedicated web site: SF90stradale. com. The new model is extreme on every level and represents a true paradigm shift, because it delivers unprecedented performance for a production car. Figures such as 1,000 cv, and a weight-to-power ratio of 1.57 kg/cv, and 390 kg of downforce at 250 km/h not only put the SF90 Stradale at the top of its segment, but also mean that a V8 is the top-of-the-range model for the first time the marque’s history. The car’s name encapsulates the true significance of all that has been achieved in terms of performance. The reference to the 90th anniversary of the foundation of Scuderia Ferrari underscores the strong link that has always existed between Ferrari’s track and road cars. A brilliant encapsulation of the most advanced technologies developed in Maranello, the SF90 Stradale is also the perfect demonstration of how Ferrari immediately transitions the knowledge and skills it acquires in competition to its production cars. The SF90 Stradale has a 90° V8 turbo engine capable of delivering 780 cv, the highest power output of any 8-cylinder in Ferrari history. The remaining 220 cv is delivered by three electric motors, one at the rear, known as the MGUK (Motor Generator Unit, Kinetic) due to its derivation from the Formula 1 application, located between the engine and the new 8-speed dual-clutch transmission on the rear axle, and two on the front axle. This sophisticated system does not, however, make for a more complicated driving experience. Quite the opposite, in fact: the driver simply has to select one of the four power unit modes, and then just concentrate on driving. The sophisticated control logic takes care of the rest, managing the flow of power between the V8, the electric motors and the batteries.

The SF90 Stradale is also the first Ferrari sports car to be equipped with 4WD, a step necessary to allow the incredible power unleashed by the hybrid powertrain to be fully exploited, ensuring the car has become the new benchmark for standing starts: 0-100km/h in 2.5 sec and 0-200km/h in barely 6.7 seconds. Ferrari’s engineers were able to further broaden the spectrum of dynamic controls by introducing the full-electric front axle, known as the RAC-e (electronic cornering set-up regulator). As well as exclusively providing propulsion in electric drive, the two front motors independently control the torque delivered to the two wheels, extending the concept of Torque Vectoring. Fully integrated into the car’s vehicle dynamics controls, the RAC-e governs the distribution of torque, making driving on the limit much simpler and easier. The introduction of this hybrid architecture was a challenge with regard to managing the additional weight which was resolved by an obsessive attention to detail and the overall optimisation of the whole of the car. For maximum performance in terms of overall weight, rigidity and centre of gravity, the chassis and bodyshell of the SF90 Stradale is all new, built using multi-material technology, including, for example, carbon fibre. The development of a hybrid car of this kind demanded the development of a series of innovative aerodynamic solutions. The significant boost in the power unit’s performance brought with it an increase in the amount of heat energy to be dissipated and required the development team to carry out an in-depth review of the aerodynamic flows on the radiating masses. It also demanded new solutions to increase downforce efficiently and guarantee maximum stability at all speeds and in all driving conditions.

maqinaonline.com / ISSUE 16 71

NEWS

72 ISSUE 16 / maqinaonline.com

Particularly noteworthy is the innovative shut-off Gurney, a patented active system located at the rear of the car which regulates the air flow over the upper body, reducing drag at high speeds with low lateral dynamics loads and increasing downforce in corners, under braking and during changes of direction.

The track-derived “eyes on the road, hands on the wheel” philosophy takes on a truly central role for the first time too, significantly influencing the ergonomics and styling of the interior. The result is an HMI (Human-Machine Interface) and interior layout concept that are a complete departure from previous models.

The new car is epoch-changing from a stylistic perspective as it completely rewrites the mid-rearengined sports berlinetta proportions introduced on the 360 Modena twenty years ago, instead taking its inspiration from Ferrari’s recent supercars. A good example is the cockpit, which has a smaller frontal section and is placed closer to the front of the car to reduce drag. This was also achieved without impacting on-board comfort.

Another major innovation is the steering wheel which now has a touchpad and a series of haptic buttons that allow the driver to control virtually every aspect of the car using just their thumbs. The central instrument cluster is now entirely digital with the first automotive application of a 16” curved HD screen which can be fully configured and controlled using the controls on the steering wheel.

NEWS

On the central tunnel, improved ergonomics have been combined with an element from the past: the automatic gearbox controls are now selected by a grille-style feature that references Ferrari’s legendary manual gear-shift gate. Thus past and present skilfully merge to point the new Ferrari towards the future. The SF90 Stradale also sees the debut of the new ignition key with full keyless technology which will gradually be introduced across the rest of the range, personalised with the model’s name. Thanks to a special compartment in the central tunnel, it becomes an integral part of the car’s styling. In addition to the sporty version, which references the shape and colour of the signature rectangular Prancing badge sported by Ferrari’s road cars, there will also be a more elegant metal-coloured version.

For the first time on a Ferrari, clients can chose between the standard car and a version with a more sports-oriented specification. The Assetto Fiorano specification includes significant upgrades, including special GT racing-derived Multimatic shock absorbers, extra lightweight features made from high-performance materials such as carbon-fibre (door panels, underbody) and titanium (springs, entire exhaust line), resulting in a weight-saving of 30 kg. Another difference is the high downforce carbon-fibre rear spoiler which generates 390 kg of downforce at 250 km/h. The Assetto Fiorano includes Michelin Pilot Sport Cup2 tyres designed specifically to improve performance on the track in the dry. They feature a softer compound and fewer grooves than the tyres provided as standard.

BMW X7 THEY CAME, THEY SAW, THEY CONQUERED

hen BMW first introduced the X5 back in 1999, the SUV segment was still relatively new. In the short span of just a couple of years though, the X5 did more to progress that very same SUV market more than any other car before it. It sold like crazy, both in Europe and America. Following its success, BMW decided to launch the X3, a smaller proposition of the same great X5 formula which brought them a lot of new customers. Although the X3 never caught up to the X5 in terms of popularity, it at least made sure BMW occupied and held the entire SUV segment. As the SUV segment evolved and more and more niches started popping up all over the place, people thought it was only a matter of time before someone dethroned BMW and the X5. Well, here we are, some 20 years after the first BMW X5 left the factory, and it’s still the benchmark luxury SUV to beat. It’s the one car all other manufacturers are comparing their propositions with. Realizing how rapidly people started ditching their sedans and limousines in favor of the SUV, BMW decided to launch a brand-new model called the X7. As its name would suggest, it slots in above the X5, making it their flagship SUV. To test it out we flew all the way to Savannah, Georgia. Here’s everything you need to know about what BMW like to call the luxury SAV, short for Sport Activity Vehicle.

76 ISSUE 16 / maqinaonline.com

SAV vs. SUV Part of BMW’s target with the new X7 as well as the redesigned X5 is to create a brand-new segment. Before we move on, let’s just quickly explain what SAV means. Although it’s a word used to describe pretty much the same thing as SUV, BMW thinks SAV does a better job of explaining what their cars are capable of. Sport Utility Vehicles (SUVs) started off as body-on-truck vehicles and were good for off-roading, but not much else. As they got more and more refined, people started using them as daily drivers, but the SUV term stuck with them. With this new range, BMW wants to showcase that their vehicles are far more than just off-road capable. They want it to be immediately obvious that they posses work capabilities and other sporting attributes as well. Only time will tell if the abbreviation catches on.

BMW WANTS TO SHOWCASE THAT THEIR VEHICLES ARE FAR MORE THAN JUST OFF-ROAD CAPABLE

C O V E R S TO RY

EXTERIOR Visually, the new X7 is instantly recognizable as a new model. Although it shares the same design language with the G05 generation X5, BMW put in effort to make it as distinct as possible. To that extent, they’ve definitely accomplished their job, since it isn’t just a bigger X5. If the X5 is a direct Mercedes GLE competitor, the X7 attacks Mercedes’ well-established GLS head on. For a first effort, they’ve done an outstanding job. The GLS isn’t a bad-looking thing, but the X7 takes styling to a whole new level.Let’s start with the front. The kidney-grille is massive, much like the one found on the X5 or the 7-Series. It might look too big in pictures, but trust me on this, they look absolutely perfect in the flesh. Because the X7 is a lot taller than any other BMW before it, it looks more narrow than it is. The wide kidney grille helps counteract this. The kidney-grille isn’t flat either. Translating 3D space into a 2D picture is impossible, though I can tell you the grille is not flat, but rather folds at the top and stretches outward at the side. It looks good.

The profile view makes the X7 appear more utilitarian than it does sporty. The beefy side skirts are fitted with steps which resemble those seen on larger trucks and pickups, but it’s not necessarily a bad look, merely an observation. The waistline is high however, and remains almost completely flat all the way to the rear of the car. The rear doors are longer than the front ones to make getting in and our easier for people in the second and third row. The rear utilizes a ‘simple is better’ philosophy. It’s different to the X5’s rear section. You might expect a large luxury SUV/SAV to feature larger taillights at the back, but it’s actually the opposite in this case. Just like the headlights, the taillights have a slim design and don’t protrude into the fenders too much.

Moving on to the headlights, you might immediately notice how different they are to any other BMW units. Although they feature the same inner workings, i.e. the same LED layout as the ones found in the X5, they’re shaped quite a lot differently. They’re slimmer and they extend all the way into the grille frame.

It gets Adaptive Full LED headlights as standard and you can even tick an option which gives you 22-inch wheels. If you want the absolute best in lighting you’ll have to go for the Executive Package which brings with it those ultra-cool Laserlight lamps. It’s available in six color choices from launch.

BMW made sure to carefully break up the back with some wellchosen horizontal lines, especially the ones found between the taillights (a chrome trim piece), and the area between the bumper and the tailgate split.

YOU DON’T NEED TO SPEND TIME WITH IT. YOU GET INSIDE AND YOU’RE INSTANTLY AMAZED

78 ISSUE 16 / maqinaonline.com

INTERIOR Stepping into the X7 is almost identical to climbing aboard the X5. Normally, that would be a slight disadvantage for this class, but since the X5 got a major refresh in the form of a new generation just last year, it doesn’t really matter. More to the point, the X5 is already BMW’s flagship five-seater SUV. The main advantage the X7 holds is the third row and the added practicality. So, from that point of view, I can’t fault it. This is a cabin which wows you from the word go. You don’t need to spend time with it. You get inside and you’re instantly amazed. I’ll begin by talking about the design and the layout since BMW traditionally struggled with interior design. They were never lacking in any area, but their approach was mostly conservative and rather dull. I certainly can’t say that about their new models. They’re on par with the best from Mercedes and Audi, which is really saying something. It still might not be as visually appealing as Mercedes’ answer, but there’s a hint of sportiness in the Beemers that’s lacking in the other two. maqinaonline.com / ISSUE 16 79

MY FAVORITE FEATURE WOULD DEFINITELY HAVE TO BE THE PANORAMIC SKY LOUNGE LED ROOF The ergonomics are for once utterly brilliant, which is good news since this thing is loaded with technology. A central panel organizes and houses all of the controls, including the iDrive Controller, the freshlydesigned gear selector, the start/stop button, the electronic brake, air-suspension control, and Driving Experience Control switches. I know it sounds like a lot when you read them listed like this, but they make complete sense once you’re in the car. The quality of the materials is second to none. You won’t find a single element made out of cheap plastic here. Trust me, I checked even under the dashboard. The base xDrive40i model comes as standard with black SensaTec but you can opt for one of nine Vernasca and Extended Merino Leather options if you don’t mind spending the extra cash. The bigger xDrive50i comes with Vernasca as standard, with alternative options including Extended Merino Leather finished in black, Ivory White, Coffee or Tartufo. My favorite feature would definitely have to be the Panoramic Sky Lounge LED roof. It works just like Rolls-Royce’s panoramic roof (the one in the Phantom), which is either a massive compliment for BMW or criticism for the Roller. Rolls-Royce is owned by BMW, so it wouldn’t necessarily surprise me if the Germans decided to borrow some British technology for their latest X7. The BMW LED roof lights illuminate when it gets dark outside and the entire system has over 15,000 graphic patterns. The optional Cold Weather Package includes five-zone automatic climate control, heated front and rear seats, heated front armrests, and a heated steering wheel. I doubt you’ll need it in the GCC. What I can recommend is the Premium package, which features softclose automatic doors, heated/cooled cup holders, a heads-up display, and gesture control. All models get a 12.3-inch infotainment display system as well as a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. Wireless charging and WiFi hotspot come standard with every X7 too. Naturally, there’s an abundance of space in all three rows to seat seven adults extremely comfortably. If you want more space but are willing to trade off one less seating space you can opt for the optional second-row captain’s chairs. If you to keep your passengers entertained at all times, I strongly suggest you tick all of the rear-seat entertainment options. These options include but are not limited to a pair of 10.2-inch full-HD touchscreen displays, a Blu-ray DVD player, an HDMI socket, and two headphone jacks.

ENGINE & PERFORMANCE The base xDrive40i hides a 3.0-liter turbocharged straightsix under the hood. It produces an effective 335 horsepower and 447 Nm of torque from just above idle. Don’t let those figures fool you because even in its most ‘lowly’ form, the X7 is brisk. The sprint to 100 km/h takes just 5.8 seconds and flat out it will nudge just over 250 km/h. I never once found it lacking power nor did I wish for more torque. It was more than adequate. Straight-six engines are inherently smooth, so it fits in with the car’s personality too.If, however, you find yourself on the other end of the spectrum, wishing more power, go for the xDrive50i. I did suggest that the xDrive40i is more than capable, but you can never have enough power can you? The 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 in the xDrive50i makes 456 horsepower and 618 Nm of torque. It can accelerate to 100 km/h in 5.2 seconds and will bury its head in the 255 km/h limiter easily. To start with, it doesn’t seem that fast since it’s just 0.6 seconds faster to 100 km/h over the xDrive40i. The true merit of the V8 lies in how usable and effortless it pulls. Any gear, any revs. If you so much as hint at pressing the accelerator it takes off with practically no turbo lag. In gear acceleration above 140 km/h or so is what impressed me. The xDrive40i starts slowing down once past 100 km/h, but the V8 has no trouble hauling the pretty big X7 chassis all the way to 200 km/h with next to no effort. Power in both variants is sent to all four wheels via ZF’s tried-and-tested eight-speed automatic gearbox (which BMW calls Steptronic). The gearbox works in conjunction with the navigation system to adapt its shift strategy based on the route and the specific driving situation.

82 ISSUE 16 / maqinaonline.com

From my experience, it does this remarkably well. It always appeared to be in the right gear, though even if it wasn’t I suspect that behemoth of a V8 would cover it up nicely with a large chunk of torque. The xDrive can now send 100% of all available power to the rear wheels when traction isn’t an issue. So, for the most part, the X7 feels rear-wheel driven, just like all other BMWs. Now, at this point, you’re surely thinking a vehicle of this size has no business being sporty. And while you’d be right, here’s where things get interesting. The X7 can be fitted with an optional electronicallycontrolled M Sport rear diff (only available in the xDrive50i), as well as four-wheel steering. That’s right, this giant hunk of metal comes with four-wheel steering, much like the Porsche 911. When you combine all of that together, you have a car which equals to more than just a sum of its parts. I was genuinely astonished by how maneuverable and agile it felt. The rear-wheel steering gives it massive stability at high speeds but aids low-speed agility by effectively shortening the wheelbase. It’s no M3, don’t get me wrong, but for something of its stature, it’s nothing short of genius.

CONCLUSION They came, they saw, they conquered. BMW’s first entry into the world of luxury seven-seaters is perfect. Well done BMW, you’ve gone out and done it again.

JAGUAR F-PACE SVR THE SPORTIEST CROSSOVER ON THE PLANET BY: TAREK HAWCHAR

hen Jaguar first introduced the F-Pace back in 2015, it quickly turned into one of their most popular models overnight. The market for compact luxury crossovers is huge at the moment, and the people who buy these cars can’t get enough of them. If there’s one thing people love more than luxury crossovers though, it’s fast luxury crossovers. Queue the Jaguar F-Pace SVR. Designed and built by the special boffins from Jaguar’s skunkworks division called Special Vehicle Operations (SVO), it’s one of the fastest crossovers currently on the market. When we recently got a chance to test one in Nice, France, out of all places, we jumped at the opportunity. Here’s what spending a few days with one of the most sought-after crossovers currently taught us. Although nothing came as a great big shock as we expected the F-Pace SVR to be brilliant, a few things did catch us off-guard.

IT’S ONE OF THE FASTEST CROSSOVERS CURRENTLY ON THE MARKET

R O AD T R I P

EXTERIOR

The regular F-Pace is a great looking bit of kit. In fact, it might be the most handsome car in its segment. So when the guys over at Jaguar decide to give it an SVR makeover, you can be positive the results will be nothing short of extraordinary. The SVR variant of the F-Pace adds another layer of aggression and menace to the standard car, but it isn’t as shouty as I originally thought it would be. The changes are more subtle than what we’ve come to expect from Jaguar, which in a car such as the F-Pace, I think is a good thing.

Round the sides we find larger fender vents which are functional as well as great to look at. They decrease air pressure inside the wheel arches at high speeds, reducing lift and increasing stability. The 21-inch wheels are larger than those found on the standard F-Pace too. The rear has to be my favorite part of the SVR’s design. The roof-mounted spoiler reduces lift and drag while increasing rear-end stability. The diffuser-like element nicely houses the quad exhaust tips, a traditional feature of most SVR models.

Ian Callum, the man behind great motoring legends such as the F-Type, the Aston Martin Vanquish, and the Jaguar C-X75, is the creative genius behind the F-Pace too. You don’t have to be a massive car enthusiast to spot the differences though. Up front you’ll notice it has a brand-new bumper with massive air intakes, a quarter of grilles, and a glossy black insert at the bottom. The SVR hood is special too, as noted by the two rows of vents giving off not-so-subtle hints.

TO BE QUITE HONEST, I DON’T THINK ANY OTHER CROSSOVER CAN HOLD A CANDLE TO THE SVR’S CABIN AT THE MOMENT

88 ISSUE 16 / maqinaonline.com

R O AD T R I P

INTERIOR The cabin was always an F-Pace strong suit, so adding minor upgrades just made it better. The bucket-style Slimline sport seats up front are brilliant, plenty of support without sacrificing comfort. Both rows of seats come with signature lozenge quilting, as well as the mandatory SVR logo embedded in the headrests. It’s a very plush cabin. The center console houses a 10-inch touchscreen which supports the latest Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, as well as 4G Wi-Fi connectivity for eight separate devices. The 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster behind the SVR-specific steering wheel was a great bonus for me. It was so clear and easy to use I had a blast playing with the menus and looking at all the different information which is available. Cargo space hasn’t been sacrificed at all, so you’re still looking at 650 liters of boot space. To be quite honest, I don’t think any other crossover can hold a candle to the SVR’s cabin at the moment. None of them have the same feeling of solidity, and they certainly don’t offer the same level of luxury.

DESPITE ITS HIGH CENTER OF GRAVITY, THE SVR FEELS PLANTED IN THE CORNERS

ENGINE & PERFORMANCE If you want the fastest regular F-Pace available, you’ll have to go for the supercharged 3.0-liter V6. With 340 horsepower no one would dare call it slow, but SVO obviously had different ideas. They’ve somehow managed to shoehorn the trusty 5.0-liter supercharged V8 into the engine bay and give this relatively compact crossover a not-so-modest 550 horsepower and 680 Nm of torque. That’s over twice as much power as a Golf GTI and 90 horsepower more than the all-American 6.2-liter Corvette C7. The sprint to 100 km/h takes just 4.3 seconds and flat out you’ll be travelling at a staggering 283 km/h. Yes, this unsuspecting crossover is faster flat out than most restricted performance saloons such as M5s, E63s, and the like. If that doesn’t make you love this thing, nothing will. Power is sent to all four wheels via a Quickshift eight-speed auto with SVR-specific tuning. The electric power assisted steering has been revamped, as has been the adaptive dynamics system, the torque vectoring, and the dynamic stability control.

90 ISSUE 16 / maqinaonline.com

R O AD T R I P

maqinaonline.com / ISSUE 16 91

R OA D T R IP

The suspension setup is relatively complex and modern, taking cues from the F-Type. The double wishbone in the front and integral link setup in the back do an excellent job of controlling body roll. Despite its high center of gravity, the SVR feels planted in the corners. The progressive springs and adaptive dampers certainly add to that as well. Bar an actual SVR sedan, this is the closest thing you can find which handles like a genuine sportscar. Apart from the higher seating position there no other indicators reminding you that you’re in a crossover. There are many crossovers which have come close, but none of them have succeeded… until now.

92 ISSUE 16 / maqinaonline.com

CONCLUSION It’s a relatively small niche segment, I’ll give you that, but if you have the money and the desire for the sportiest crossover on the planet, there are no alternatives. You have to get this SUV, it’s that good.

JAGUAR XE

A GENUINE RIVAL TO THE GERMAN OFFERINGS

BY: TAREK HAWCHAR

s there anyone reading this not utterly in love with Jaguar? Even if you don’t like the company, you have to respect their ability to look at things differently and not chase mainstream appeal. In a world dominated by BMWs and Audis, seeing a Jag on the road is a rare thing. Although it has to be said, it’s less rare now than it used to be just five years ago. The company has been churning out one hit after another in recent years. A company which was seemingly going nowhere during the early 2000’s somehow managed to pull off an amazing 180 and become one of the most desirable brands in the world… yet again. In light of the F-Type and the updated F-Pace/E-Pace, we now get a revised XE. The XE used to be a simple alternative to the 3-Series or the C-Class, but no more. It’s now a genuine rival to the German offerings, outclassing them in multiple areas. We recently had a chance to test drive one in Nice, France, and here’s what we found out from our short but informative road trip.

96 ISSUE 16 / maqinaonline.com

IT’S NOW A GENUINE RIVAL TO THE GERMAN OFFERINGS, OUTCLASSING THEM IN MULTIPLE AREAS

R O AD T R I P

EXTERIOR

Visually, it’s without a doubt one the best looking car in its respective segment. It’s a proven head-turner and all-around handsome car. We had people ask us for a picture of the car at petrol stations and even the occasional photo snaps from other cars on the highway. Over the years I’ve driven a lot of BMWs and Audis, but none have attracted as much attention as the XE does (M and RS variants excluded). It’s a remarkably beautiful car from any angle. Obviously, this isn’t an all-new generation or platform so you can’t expect any drastic changes. That being said, the new revisions are noticeable even from afar. The re-sculpted front end features a new bumper, a wider and more aggressive grille, and slightly sharper headlights. If you thought the old car looked like a hawk from the front, you’ll have to rethink again.

Round back you’ll find slimmer LED lights just above the revised rear bumper. If there’s one thing I disliked about the last XE it was definitely the taillights. They never matched the rest of the XE’s brilliant design. They looked like an afterthought, grabbed from the JLR parts bin and just slapped on to the XE’s rear end. The new units are much more modern and subtle. They’re still nothing like the front headlights, but they’re not horrible to look at. The current XE is actually the first car to utilize the new JLR D7a platform, a platform which now finds itself underneath the XF, the F-Pace, and the Range Rover Velar. Although the current gen car was first launched back in 2015, thanks to constant updates it still looks as fresh and modern as it did four years ago. There’s a new one coming out in a few years’ time, but at the moment, you won’t catch me complaining.

FIVE ADULTS CAN TRAVEL IN THE XE COMFORTABLY ALL DAY LONG, WITH PLENTY OF ROOM FOR THEIR ENTIRE LUGGAGE

INTERIOR Is it even possible to get inside a Jag and not be impressed? Seriously, I’ve been in a handful of Jaguars this year alone and each one has been better than the last. They’ve all certainly been better than the competition. The world of luxury sedans is crowded with excellent entries, and competing at the top requires more than just a brilliant chassis and powerful engines. Comfort and luxury rate highly for the people who buy and own these cars, and Mercedes and Audi seem to be in a sweet spot at the moment… until you get in the Jaguar that is. The cabin simply oozes with quality. It’s difficult to put into words since you have to experience it yourself to know what I’m on about. There’s a general aroma of ‘premium-ness’ that I don’t think you can find on any other car in this price bracket. It feels special, and that’s something which is very hard to replicate. A lot of cars on the market use quality materials or are full of new technology, but very few manage to recreate that special feeling. maqinaonline.com / ISSUE 16 99

THE DEATH OF THE V6 ISN’T AS GRIM AS IT SOUNDS. THE LIGHTER FOUR-CYLINDER ENGINE FURTHER ACCENTUATES THE XE’S BRILLIANT CHASSIS AND HOW LOVELY IT IS TO DRIVE

The materials inside the new XE feel better than ever before, but if you ask me the most notable upgrade is the 12.3-inch driver display screen behind the steering wheel. It’s so clear and organized that using it is a joy. The InControl Touch Pro Duo infotainment system is optional, as is wireless phone charging and a brand-new steering wheel with illuminated controls. There’s plenty of space in the cabin but this isn’t an XF, so don’t expect an all-encompassing boot. That being said, it is roomier than the A4 or the C-Class, or at least it feels like it. Five adults can travel in the XE comfortably all day long, with plenty of room for their entire luggage.

ENGINE & PERFORMANCE The XE comes in two distinct flavors, but here’s where things take a turn for the worse. Due to poor sales, Jaguar has dropped the XE S and its V6 engine, so the only option now is a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder. In base trim (called S or P250) it makes 247 horsepower, and in the R-Dynamic S (or P300) spec, it makes 296 horsepower. Power is sent to the rear wheels as standard via a ZF eight-speed auto transmission, the very same unit used by the likes of BMW and Mercedes. There’s an optional all-wheel-drive system too, should you feel the need for all-weather performance. The sprint to 100 km/h takes just 5.6 seconds in the P300 and 6.4 in the P250. The death of the V6 isn’t as grim as it sounds. The lighter four-cylinder engine further accentuates the XE’s brilliant chassis and how lovely it is to drive. A neutral chassis which is more than willing to step the rear slightly out of line if you provoke it. It feels like an old-school BMW in the way it drives, and I mean that in the best way possible.

I honestly believe Jaguar has reached a point where their cars are as good to drive as BMW’s or Mercedes’. The XE has no visible chinks in its armor. It’s all down to individual specification and trim levels, but I reckon the XE now has both the 3-Series and the C-Class pinned when it comes to chassis refinement.

CONCLUSION It’s the performance/luxury sedan for the person who wants to stand out. It’s the car for the person who isn’t afraid to make bold choices. The only car which can hold a candle to the way the new XE looks is the Alfa Romeo Giulia. If you want something which is that little bit different than the German offerings but don’t want an Alfa, what else is there other than the Jag?

ne of BMW’s most popular model throughout the 1990s was the now-iconic 8-Series. Although it never sold in huge figures due to its price, it was easily one of the most sought-after cars back in its day. After a nearly 20 year hiatus, BMW decided to bring the nameplate back, and take the fight to Mercedes and their newly christened S-Class Coupe. Naturally, no Coupe is complete without its Convertible counterpart, hence the new 8-Series Convertible. The question now is not can the 8-Series Convertible take the fight to the S-Class, but can both of them take the fight to cars like the Bentley Continental Convertible. To answer that question and see how the new 8-Series Convertible drives, we flew to sunny Faro, Portugal, where BMW held a first drive of the 8-Series as well as the facelifted 7-Series, which we also drove. A sunny Mediterranean country with excellent ribbons of tarmac and arguably one of the best convertibles currently on the market. If you asked me to describe the perfect place to review what might be the perfect car, I wouldn’t be able to come up with a better answer if I tried!

First thing’s first, let’s talk about the design. In essence, it’s just an 8-Series Coupe with the roof lobbed off, but I think it’s so much more than that. The current BMW design language lends itself so much better to a convertible that I struggle to make a case for the Coupe, despite the fact I’m a Coupe advocate simply because of the way they drive. To look at though, the ‘vert is definitely the one to go for. Although BMW has a habit of enlarging the front grille to disproportionate sizes these days, as they did on the 7-Series or the X7, the 8-Series seems largely unaffected. It’s still enormous by normal standards, but it isn’t ridiculous. It’s wide but it isn’t particularly tall, I think that might have something to do with it. The fact that it fills up the front fascia rather nicely is also a big bonus. The headlights are full adaptive LED units as standard but you can opt for the Laserlight ones if you want to spend even more money on optional extras.

There are 20 and 21-inch wheels to choose from, but the latter fill up the wheel arches a little bit better. While most of the body panels on the convertible are identical to those on the Coupe, the rear trunk lid is somewhat different, mostly to accommodate the retractable soft top. Speaking of the soft top, BMW is proud in producing one of the lightest yet most durable soft tops on any convertible. It can be opened and closed at speeds of up to 50 km/h and the entire procedure takes just 15 seconds. It comes in black as standard but you can also have it with an Anthracite Silver effect.

THERE’S SPACE FOR FOUR ADULTS BUT THE REAR SEATS SHOULD BE IDEALLY USED FOR SHORTER JOURNEYS

108 ISSUE 16 / maqinaonline.com

R O AD T R I P

INTERIOR Inside it’s exactly like the 8-Series Coupe, much to the surprise of no one. That being said, this is easily the most luxurious convertible BMW has ever made. The quality of the materials is superb, so much so that you might be tempted to put the roof up even on overcast days just to not run the chance of sudden rainfall ‘ruining’ your lovely interior. There’s space for four adults but the rear seats should be ideally used for shorter journeys. The 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster is a joy to use, and so is the 10.25-inch digital infotainment screen running the new iDrive 7 system. Convertible-specific features include a wind deflector to reduce turbulence as standard and integrated neck warmers in the front head restraints. Other optional extras such as ventilated seats and the Heat Comfort Package with a heated steering wheel are especially worth having in the Convertible, whereas I’d say they’re definitely a luxury in the Coupe. The Cabriolet sacrifices some trunk space to fit the folding roof, but not much. With the top closed, there’s 350 liters of boot space, a 70-liter deficit when compared to the Coupe. Not inconsiderable, but not a deal-breaker either. maqinaonline.com / ISSUE 16 109

BODY ROLL WAS WELL COUNTERED AND THE 8-SERIES MANAGED TO MASK ITS WEIGHT RELATIVELY WELL

ENGINE & PERFORMANCE There’s just one petrol variant and it comes in the form of an M850i xDrive. The 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 produces 530 horsepower and 750 Nm of torque at just 1,800 rpm, capable of accelerating this relatively heavy ‘vert to 100 km/h in just 3.7 seconds. Sending power to all four wheels is a brilliant ZF eight-speed auto like the one found in most BMW models. Straight line speed is one thing, but I wanted to find out if it will actually corner. This is a big GT car, so I’m not expecting M3 performance, but it has to be able to live up to its BMW badge. To that extent, I can safely say I was pleasantly surprised. Even on small and twisty Portuguese roads, where it had no business being thrown around in the manner I drove it in, it performed exceptionally well. Body roll was well countered and the 8-Series managed to mask its weight relatively well. The only time you’re aware of its weight is when you slam on the brakes and ask it to come to a standstill at an unreasonable rate. The surprising thing is that it does, thanks to massive M-performance brakes and wide, grippy tires.

The upcoming S-Class Convertible might be more luxurious than the 8-Series (if that’s even possible), but I doubt it’ll have the same road-holding characteristics the Beemer has. To put it simply, it’s a GT car which isn’t aware that it’s a GT car. It behaves in a manner much closer to sportscar dynamics than that of a grand tourer.

CONCLUSION The best luxury convertible on the market? I’d say so, at least for the moment. The current S-Class Coupe isn’t a match, and the Bentley is far too different for me to place them as direct rivals. The Bentley is a much more relaxed driving proposition, one which you never want to press on at anything more than fivetenths. The 8-Series on the other hand can be enjoyed at any pace, even ten-tenths.

or as long as big, luxury limousines have existed, German manufacturers have dominated the segment. As a general consensus, the Mercedes S-Class was usually the nicest to be in, the BMW 7-Series had the best chassis, and the Audi A7 aced the other two in the looks department. The truth is, they were virtually indistinguishable unless you really wanted to nitpick. You’d be happy with either one of the three without ever looking back. With the new S-Class set to hit the market sometime in 2020, BMW has decided to beat the Stuttgart manufacturer to the punch and launch their own rival first. There’s been speculation of a new facelifted 7-Series for years now, but BMW managed to keep specifics relatively hidden. Finally, in early 2019 they broke radio silence at the Geneva Motor Show. Although this isn’t an entirely new platform but rather a facelift of the outgoing 7-Series, it certainly looks the part. To give it a proper review and experience how the changes BMW implemented affect the finished product, we were invited to sunny Faro, Portugal. The mix of open roads with flowing corners, and small, twisty hill bends, gave the new 7-Series a real workout.

EXTERIOR

The pictures you’re seeing are not photoshopped. The front grille really is that massive. I’d say around 90 percent of all comments addressed towards the way the new 7-Series look were somehow related to that giant grille up front, but it isn’t all bad news. In the flesh when you get up close and personal with it, it somehow looks alright. I’d still prefer a smaller grille, but there are certain angles and creases which don’t translate well to camera but make the thing pop out in real life. It looks silly head on but the side profile is good.

From the side profile, it’s still undisputedly a 7-Series. The wheelbase is long, the overhangs are massive, but the whole car sits better on the road than the last model ever did. The rear is more modern too. The taillights are slimmer now, and there’s a central trim line along with the brake line running across connecting them. The lower bumper integrates the two large exhaust openings, one on either side. The rear is definitely more understated than the front, but that isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

Other changes up front include a revised front bumper with a large central opening, as well as slimmer and more aggressive headlights. As standard, the redesigned 7-Series comes fitted with adaptive LED technology but you can opt for the Laserlight units for a small premium. Having tried both I’d say the LED units are more than up to the job. The Laserlights seem like a novelty, but they do work better it has to be said. It’s just that the differences are mostly visual, from the outside, and you don’t get any real benefits as a driver. Still, if you like the way they look, go for it.

THE CHANGES INSIDE ARE EQUAL TO THOSE OF A NEW MODEL, NOT A FACELIFT

INTERIOR I know I said this is just a minor facelift, but the changes inside are equal to those of a new model, not a facelift. For starters, there’s six-color LED ambient lighting to create a more pleasant atmosphere for the occupants. The all-new instrument cluster is now a 12.3-inch digital screen, just like in the Merc or the Audi. There’s a heads-up display too, showcasing all the vital info the driver needs at any given moment. Those seated in the rear can enjoy 10-inch HD touchscreen units nested in the front seats. There’s a Blu-ray player for ultimate convenience, and rear passengers can also control various infotainment features such as the navigation and online search functions. An innovative feature is the BMW Touch Command. It’s essentially a removable tablet which can be utilized even outside the car. Using the tablet the user can digitally control the seats, the lighting, the climate control, and even the infotainment screen. Wi-Fi hotspot is standard and so is wireless charging.

YOU CAN’T GO WRONG WITH ANY OF THE ENGINES ON OFFER, IT’S ALL DOWN TO PERSONAL PREFERENCE

People looking for the latest in technology will be seriously impressed by the optional Night Vision feature, showing you real-time “heatemitting” imaging on the Control Display. The whole system is controlled by the new iDrive 7 infotainment system with 20 gigabytes of storage space. Elsewhere it’s your usual 7-Series really. Top of the line materials, superb build quality, and more interior space than you’d ever need.

ENGINE & PERFORMANCE There are three petrol variants on offer, a 740i, a 750i, and an M760i. The first one wears the B58 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six engine producing 340 horsepower and 450 Nm of torque, while the second makes do with the same 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8 like the one in the 850i. In 7-Series trim it makes 530 horsepower and 750 Nm of torque. All engines utilize the brilliant ZF eight-speed auto. Needless to say, the 850i is the much faster proposition of the two. Because inlinesix engines, especially BMW ones, are so inherently smooth though, the 740i is just as good as the V8 provided you don’t want/need the extra power. BMW discontinued the rear-wheel drive option for the 750i, meaning you can only have it in xDrive flavor. The 740i can still be specified as a rear-wheel-drive limo however, but very few people will do so. The flagship M760Li remains, but it gets a small decrease in horsepower, now producing a total of 592 horsepower. As a consequence of less horsepower, BMW engineers have been able to ramp up torque to 850 Nm. In a big limo such as the 7-Series, torque is the more important figure.

There’s a third, hybrid variant on the table, called the 745e iPerformance (previously called the 740e). It uses the same inline-six engine as the 740i, but thanks to a couple of electric motors, it now produces 389 horsepower and 599 Nm of torque. A new 12 kWh battery pack increases overall electric range too. To drive, the M760Li is, without a doubt, the fastest and most refined. It’s essentially two inline-six units, so it’s inherently balanced and efficient. The 7-Series’ is still the best car of the three German offerings dynamically though, but the 750i feels a little bit lighter on its feet compared to the M760Li. The 740i is the lightest and most affordable model, so it will probably be the most popular too. In all honesty, you can’t go wrong with any of the engines on offer, it’s all down to personal preference.

CONCLUSION As of now, this might be the most advanced luxury limo in the world. We’ll have to wait for the new S-Class to drop for the final verdict, but as things stand, Mercedes have a real threat on their hands in the form of this new 7-Series.

FERRARI GTC4LUSSO & GTC4LUSSO T A CONTEMPORARY VISION OF FERRARI’S ILLUSTRIOUS FOUR-SEATER HERITAGE

maqinaonline.com / ISSUE 16 125

F E AT U R E

The new Ferrari GTC4Lusso stable is Maranello’s latest interpretation of the fourseater concept, which combines extraordinary performance in all driving conditions with sporty elegance and luxurious comfort for both driver and passengers alike. The GTC4Lusso’s name references several illustrious predecessors, not least the 330 GTC or its 2+2 sister model, the 330 GT, as well as the 250 GT Berlinetta Lusso, which married extreme performance with stylish design and sophisticated materials and craftsmanship. It follows in the footsteps of the FF, the first ever Ferrari you could drive on rough terrain or take up mountains for a ski trip thanks to its predictive all-wheel drive system, and continues the lineage of Ferrari’s spacious 2+2 models that began with the 1948 166 Inter. Ferrari has updated the grand touring FF with a stunning new interior, sharper exterior styling, improved engine and handling and a brand new name that reflects the luxury that epitomizes Ferraris’ flagship models. Here we take a moment to reflect on the most significant models that have shaped the history of Ferrari’s V12 and V8 engined four-seaters.

Ferrari 166 Inter (1948) The 166 Inter was Ferrari’s first ever road-going model and was based on the 166 sports racing models, such as the 166 MM barchetta, with which it shared a slightly lower-powered version of the sophisticated 2-litre V12. Typically for those years, no two cars were alike and one of the most popular coachbuilders of that era, Carrozzeria Touring, produced the majority of the model range, including this, the 166 Inter coupé Touring, which debuted at the 1948 Turin Motor Show. One of just five Ferrari cars sold that year, it was the first ever example of a two-door four-seater and thus the predecessor of today’s GTC4Lusso.

Ferrari 250 GT 2+2 (1960) The 250 GT 2+2 was the first four-seater Ferrari to be produced in large numbers. In fact nearly 1000 cars were produced between the model’s launch at Le Mans 24 Hours in June 1960 and the end of 1963. Although there had been other Ferrari models designated 2+2s in the early 1950s, the 250 GT 2+2 was the first with proper four-seat accommodation and the concept proved to be extremely popular, accounting for about two thirds of the total Ferrari 250 GT road car production of the period. The Pinin Farinadesigned car was equipped with the 3-litre version of the V12 producing 240 hp, with the last fifty examples being fitted with 4-litre engines and designated 330 America.

F E AT U R E

Ferrari 330 GT 2+2 (1964) The 330 America was replaced by the 330 GT 2+2 coupé which was presented at the annual Ferrari pre-season competition press conference in January 1964, making its public appearance at the Brussels Salon later that month. Characterised by its front-end styling that included large quad headlights emphasized by chrome surrounds, its Pininfarina styling was viewed favourably and the new 2+2 was considered to offer substantial improvements over its predecessor. In all, the model garnered much praise from the press at the time. One of the most famous owners of the 330 GT 2+2 coupé was John Lennon of Beatles fame who was bought a model in 1965 by his band mates the day he passed his driving test.

Ferrari 365 GT 2+2 (1967) The 365 GT 2+2 was presented at the 1967 Paris Motor Show, and was the replacement for the 330 GT 2+2. With its elegant, imposing lines, it was the first Ferrari to feature power steering and air conditioning as standard for the American market.

Ferrari 365 GTC4 (1971) The 365 GTC4 was the successor to the 365 GT 2+2. The body style was very different from the models that it replaced: gone were the graceful rounded curves and the elliptical radiator grille, to be replaced by a much more angular wedge design, which was coming into vogue at the time. The more compact design of a twoseater coupé actually hid the fact the car had two small rear seats which had folding backs to increase luggage space.roomy boot and generous occupant space that also includes two rear seats for short trips.

F E AT U R E

Ferrari 365 GT4 2+2 (1972) This was a brand new design from Pininfarina, which faced the task of developing a fast, svelte and elegant 2+2 powered by the classic 4.4-litre VI2 engine that would break with the more classical lines of the 1967 365 GT 2+2 and provide greater rear seat space than that car’s successor, the 1971 GTC4. The 365 GT4 2+2 model was announced at the 1972 Paris Salon, and continued in production until 1976, when it was replaced by the 400 series which maintained - right up until the final interpretation, the 1985 5-litre 412 which ended production in 1989 – the refined styling that exuded an air of sporting luxury.

Ferrari 456 GT (1992) The 456 GT took the luxury 2+2 coupé theme to new heights and saw Ferrari return to the front-engine concept for the first time since the 1968 365 GTB4. The all-new 65° V12 provided unprecedented flexibility and power

Ferrari GTC4Lusso (2016) Along with a new name, Ferrari gave the GTC4Lusso updated lines, a new interior, and a touch more horsepower from its V12 engine. The performance displays the thrilling Ferrari soundtrack, with an increased power output from 651 horsepower to 680 ponies. This Italian horsepower allows the GTC4Lusso to reach 0 to 100 km/h in 3.4 seconds on the way to its 333 km/h top speed. Importantly, the all-wheel drive Ferrari now has four-wheel steering similar to that found in the F12 TDF. Allowing all four wheels to steer and propel the car forward makes the car turn as fast as it can accelerate. The GTC4Lusso sports the latest evolution of the naturally-aspirated Ferrari GT V12 that melds incredible power with efficiency and provides a soundtrack which is thrilling in performance driving, yet discreet and harmonious in normal touring conditions, whether city, mountain or desert.

Ferrari GTC4Lusso T (2016) The first four-seater in Prancing Horse history to sport a V8 turbo engine, hailing a whole new Ferrari GT concept. The model is aimed at owners seeking a car that is sporty and versatile but also perfect for frequent driving. Ferrari has given the GTC4Lusso T a 3.9-litre V8 turbo; the latest evolution to emerge from the engine family named overall “2016 International Engine of the Year”. The car’s maximum power output is 610 cv at 7,500 rpm while maximum torque of 760 Nm is available at between 3,000 and 5,250 rpm. This Italian horsepower allows the GTC4Lusso T to reach 0 to 100 km/h in 3.5 seconds on the way to its 320 km/h top speed. The V8 turbo’s signature characteristics suit day-to-day driving in urban contexts: a rich powerful soundtrack at high speeds that becomes more muted at lower speeds, nimbleness and responsiveness courtesy of versatile, modular torque delivery and, last but not least, an excellent range.

The GTC4Lusso & The GTC4Lusso T. This is the Ferrari DNA.

Napkin Etiquette by: Dr.Marie Abou Rached

Napkin is a piece of cloth placed on the plate or infront of it. It is used to wipe the mouth before and after drinking, also after eating soup or fatty food. We have to remember that the napkin is not a tissue or a washcloth, so it can never be used to wipe the whole face, the cuttlery or the nose. The napkin has to be placed on the lap but never to be tucked into the shirt. There are many types of napkins 1. Paper napkins that are inexpensive and convenient. Paper napkins can be used for kids birthdays, picnic and unformal events. 2. Cloth napkins: are more sophisticated and it adds a touch of classiness to the table set. 3. Linen napkins: are used for formal dinner. 4. Cotton napkins: are softer than the linen napkins and it is for home use. 5. Polyester napkins: are used for casual meals. The napkin size has to cover the guest’s lap. Below are some Napkin sizes & tips 1. Napkins for breakfast: its size is18 to 20 inches. 2. Napkins for lunch: its size is 20 inches 3. Napkins for dinner: its size is 22 inches (it’s the best to be used for a fancy fold). 4. The napkin has to be clean and well ironed. 5. The napkin ring helps the napkin to stay upright. (the spray starch can help the napkins to stay in place). 6. The event’s theme and location have to be taken into consideration while choosing the napkin. How to use the napkin? 1. When the waiter serves the bread on the left plate is a sign to put the napkin on the lap. 2. If you have to leave the table in the middle of the meal, place the napkin on the chair. 3. Do not mention “I’m going to the restroom, or I need to fix my makeup to leave the table. Just say “Excuse me” and leave the table. 4. Sometimes when you leave the table, the waiter will fold the napkin and put it back on the table. Just unfold the napkin and place it back on your lap. 5. When you finish eating , place the napkin semi folded on the left side of the plate.
