one mann’s opinion

In all my 30 years of publishing and my years involved in the real estate business and the fashion industry, as well as the many people I have met along the way in my career, there is no person that means more to me than Richard and Karen LeFrak. I am honored to have Karen LeFrak gracing the cover of our August 2025 Mann About Town issue.

I share a storied history with husband and wife Richard and Karen LeFrak who have been friends of mine my whole life, and I could tell you from my heart that there are no two finer people that exist. I met Richard in the fourth grade and Karen later on in high school. I was extremely close to Richard’s parents Ethel and Sam LeFrak, and to Karen’s parents Pauline and Arthur Tucker. I was also fortunate over the years to know Richard and Karen’s sons, Jamie and Harrison, and what they’ve accomplished has continued the LeFrak tradition of real estate and they’ve expanded upon it. I can go on forever about this family but it would take too long. Just know that after all these years, I still consider them the most dear and special people that I have met.

Now specifically about our amazing cover star Karen LeFrak, a woman who fell in love with the piano at the very early age of three. What she’s accomplished in her life and to become a world-famous pianist and musical composer is one of the most amazing stories that you could read—and it’s all true.

In this issue you will read about many must-sees and must-know abouts. This includes our annual golf outing on October 6, 2025. Also, like every summer, there is a lot going on in the Hamptons that you don’t want to be in the dark about. I hope you enjoy reading this issue as much as we have enjoyed highlighting everything.

EDITOR’S LETTER

Hello everyone!

We’re in the prime of summer which means there is so much going on and so much to make the most of before it gets chilly!

Many events have and continue to take place, including the French Heritage Society (FHS) having hosted their third annual Summer Soirée, Leviev’s elegant “Brilliance in Bloom” luncheon in the Hamptons, Alice + Olivia presented their “Can’t Be Tamed” limited-edition collection in collaboration with Ford Bronco, high profile boxing match between Mario “El Azteca” Barrios and Manny Pacquiao at MGM Grand Garden Arena, and the Hamptons’ First-Ever All-Black Dinner Party. These are just a select few of the many exciting events happening all summer.

As for traveling, there is so much elegance and charm, especially with La Samanna, a Belmond Hotel in St. Martin, Hotel La Palma and Vico Milano. There’s a spectacular resort with a golf course that’s a must to golf on at the Fox Harb’r Resort.

The arts are always incredible and we feature contemporary artist and lighting mogul Bentley Meeker, highlight Musah Swallah and his paintings, and showcase the landmark exhibition “More than Human.” We have beautiful furniture for seating to elevate your home and contemporary luxury living with The 74.

On the cover we have Karen Lefrak, worldfamous musical composer and pianist, preparing for the release of her 15th solo piano album.

LeFrak’s works have been commissioned and performed across the United States, Europe, Russia and Asia. She’s also been asked to develop classical versions of songs by famous singers. In addition to her great musical talent, she’s become an author of children’s books, with a strong ties in her stories to the arts. This is a cover feature to definitely read.

With food, we always have something special for you. I invite you to go to Palermo, an Argentinian Bistro in Gramercy. Their food is great and their catering to your needs is just as lovely. There is also ATIK, a restaurant at City Island where the views are amazing and the food is the icing on the cake.

There is much to see, places to shop and memories to make. Don’t just hear about it, but experience it.

Enjoy the best month, the dear month of August!

SAN ANTONIO’S OWN MARIO BARRIOS GOES

THE DISTANCE IN LAS VEGAS WITH SUPPORT FROM LEGAL POWERHOUSE THOMAS J. HENRY

The MGM Grand Garden Arena pulsed with electricity on Saturday, July 19, as Mario “El Azteca” Barrios stepped into the ring for one of the most high-profile fights of his career versus Manny Pacquiao. Standing firmly in his corner was renowned attorney and philanthropist Thomas J. Henry, proudly returning as Team Barrios’ official sponsor.

The high-stakes bout, broadcast live around the world via Premier Boxing Champions pay-per-view on Prime Video, marked yet another momentous occasion in Barrios’ decorated career. With the bright lights of Las Vegas beaming down and millions watching globally, Barrios brought grit, heart and determination to the ring—qualities that mirror the spirit of San Antonio itself.

“I have always believed in Mario, not just for the warrior he is in the ring but for the man he is outside of it,” said Henry following the match. “He represents something bigger than boxing. He represents resilience, pride and community. That’s why I continue to stand behind him.”

Henry, one of the nation’s most recognized personal injury attorneys, is no stranger to backing talent with purpose. His sponsorship of Barrios for this pivotal fight continued a multiyear alliance that includes support during previous matchups against Gervonta “Tank” Davis, Abel Ramos and Fabian Maidana.

More than a business arrangement, the relationship between Henry and Barrios is rooted in shared values: hard work, integrity and a deep commitment to community. Both San Antonio natives, they’ve used their respective platforms to give back—Barrios through mentorship and charitable outreach, and Henry through education funding, athletic sponsorships and nonprofit partnerships.

The fight was not just a spectacle, it was a statement. Barrios entered the ring not only as a competitor but as a symbol of what it means to rise from humble beginnings and carry your roots with pride. With Henry’s unwavering support, the boxer stood tall against a formidable opponent and left the ring having once again proven his worth on the world stage.

Thomas J. Henry’s sponsorship of Barrios is part of his ongoing mission to spotlight local talent and create long-term impact across Texas and beyond. Whether inside the courtroom or ringside in Las Vegas, Henry continues to fight for those who inspire, uplift and lead.

AND #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLING AUTHOR

Leigh Bardugo

co-hosted a landmark evening in Water Mill, celebrating Bardugo’s decade of genredefining storytelling—and made fashion history while doing it.

Set at a private estate on the East End, the evening marked the first-ever all-black dress code party in the Hamptons—a bold, visually striking departure from the region’s usual fare of white parties and breezy pastels. Guests arrived dressed in their own interpretations of “all black everything,” setting a chic, mysterious tone for a night that blended performance, reflection and storytelling under the stars.

The evening featured a live performance by acclaimed mentalist Kevin Nicholas, followed by an intimate conversation with Bardugo on fantasy, world-building and the artistic process. During a moving speech, she described her path to success as long, grueling and, ultimately, transformative. Comparing the creative journey to that of an Olympian, she underscored the sacrifice, rigor and discipline that shape every breakthrough.

Notable attendees included Alexandra Daddario, Kathryn Gallagher, Zibby Owens, Elena Matei and Alexander Hankin, joining hosts Rose and Bardugo for the candlelit celebration.

Each guest departed with two novels from Bardugo’s catalog, a symbolic parting gift honoring the enduring power of storytelling.

VICO MILANO

History & Background

Vico Milano opened in 2021 and is the passion project of Neri Baccheschi Berti. Neri has turned his vision of creating an ultra-boutique hotel in Italy’s most cosmopolitan city into a reality. Much like its sister property Castello di Vicarello, family is at the very heart of this project. Neri converted the building, which was previously operating as the studio and showroom for his mother’s fashion brand, into a seven-room luxury hotel. Vico is a new generation boutique hotel and unlike anything else in Milan—a completely discreet, easy-going and unique experience for travelers.

Location

Positioned in one of the city’s most soughtafter locations, Corso Genova 11, the boutique property is just a short walk to the Duomo and the fashionable district of Via Tortona, home to designer showrooms and a Milan Fashion Week hotspot. Vico is also a short walk to the historic landmark Colonne di San Lorenzo and to Navigli—one of the city’s most popular neighborhoods.

Design & Concept

Vico Milano is a project led by Sicilian architect Giuseppe Alito, who collaborated with Neri on the concept of the space and also designed many of the furniture pieces, all handcrafted by artisans in Tuscany and Sicily. Neri has also drawn on influences from his own life to create the bespoke home away from home, sourcing pieces from around the world for the hotel. These include beautiful handmade bathroom tiles from Fez, Morocco, green marble from Tinos, Greece and pink marble from Sienna which was later turned into a large marble and oak table sitting in the library. Guests will also appreciate lighting throughout the hotel from the Coordinates Collection by Michael Anastassiades for Flos. Together, with handpicked vintage design furniture, carpets from Morrocco and rattan chairs from Italian designer Carminati, guests will appreciate a unique fusion of cultures, colors and materials, a true realization of Neri and Giuseppe’s vision.

Inside the New Era at Fox Harb’r Resort

On a rugged stretch of Nova Scotia’s Northumberland Shore, where the Atlantic’s rhythm shapes the coastline, a new era of Canadian luxury is unfolding. Fox Harb’r Resort, long celebrated as one of Canada’s most exclusive destinations, is redefining its legacy with a multi-million-dollar transformation. Anchored by championship golf, a world-class Spa & Wellness Centre and an exclusive residential offering, the resort’s expansion cements its place as one of North America’s most coveted coastal escapes. For discerning travelers, even the journey begins with ease. Guests can bypass traditional airports and land directly on the resort’s private 5,000-foot runway. The seamless arrival is a natural extension of the resort’s ethos: privacy, precision and the quiet confidence of a destination that has catered to world leaders, golf legends and celebrities for 25 years.

The Ocean Course: A Coastal Masterwork

The centerpiece of the Fox Harb’r evolution is the debut of the Ocean Course, the first phase of a sweeping golf expansion that will ultimately deliver 36 holes of championship play. Designed by Canada’s most esteemed golf architects, Doug Carrick and Tom McBroom, the reimagined greens welcomed its first players this spring and is already being hailed as one of the year’s most anticipated golf debuts. “The Ocean Course unfolds like a journey,” says Carrick. “By the time golfers reach the elevated fifth tee, they are met with a spectacular panorama of the Northumberland Strait and Prince Edward Island, one of the routing’s most awe-inspiring reveals. From there, the holes fully embrace the oceanfront, ensuring that every round is both exhilarating and unforgettable.” Taking its cues from Scotland’s legendary links, the design blends dramatic elevation changes, strategic bunkering, and sweeping coastal vistas in a way that feels both authentic and elevated. It’s an experience that belongs among the finest golf destinations anywhere. Momentum will only build from here. Work is already underway on the companion Vineyard Course, a Heathland-style layout set amid forests, meadows, and the resort’s vineyards. “With both the Ocean and Vineyard Courses, Fox Harb’r will be one of the most diverse golf destinations in North America,” added Kevin Toth, president of Fox Harb’r Resort. “Players will encounter two entirely different challenges, from dramatic oceanfront holes to the refined, inland vineyard layout.”

Wellness Elevated: The New Spa & Wellness Centre

Fox Harb’r’s transformation reaches well beyond the greens. The resort recently unveiled a reimagined Spa & Wellness Centre. At 15,000 square feet, the facility draws inspiration from the elements, offering a hydrothermal circuit, halotherapy salt lounge and advanced recovery therapies. “This transformation is more than an investment in luxury wellness,” said Toth. “It’s about creating a world-class retreat where guests can fully immerse themselves in renewal and relaxation. Every detail has been designed to provide an unparalleled spa experience that aligns with the modern traveler’s pursuit of well-being.” Guests can move through the self-guided hydrotherapy sequence—bio-sauna, aromatherapy steam, experience showers, cold plunge and ice fountain—before transitioning

to the salt lounge’s negative-ion-rich environment for stillness and breath. The new fitness studio rivals elite private clubs, while signature body and skin therapies incorporate regional botanicals and marine elements drawn from Nova Scotia’s coastline. “Our coastal setting offers more than just a beautiful backdrop, it’s a natural source of wellness,” added Joann Patriquin, director of Spa & Wellness. “When guests step into the spa, they’re invited to experience personalized indulgence and the restorative power of the sea.”

A New Residential Vision

The luxurious resort is also expanding its residential community with the introduction of 18 townhomes designed by celebrated Atlantic Canadian architect Brian MacKay-Lyons. Known for work that responds to landscape and local culture, MacKay-Lyons has created homes that feel rooted in their surroundings. Cedar shingles and sandstone nod to the region’s heritage, while generous windows and contemporary, open interiors capture sweeping ocean views. “Our new townhomes allow discerning owners to invest not just in property, but in the Fox Harb’r lifestyle,” said Toth. “It’s about becoming part of a community built around golf, wellness, and an appreciation for Nova Scotia’s natural beauty.”

A Legacy in Motion

Spanning 1,400 acres and offering accommodations for up to 200 guests, Fox Harb’r Resort’s amenities now extend far beyond its golf pedigree. A deep-water marina, clay shooting range, sport fishing, fine dining and award-winning conference facilities make it a year-round draw for travelers seeking both adventure and retreat. “Nova Scotia continues to grow as a golf destination, and Fox Harb’r brings something distinctive to the province’s landscape,” says Toth. “Whether it’s a round of golf, a weekend escape, or time at the spa, we offer a place to truly unwind and recharge.” As the resort celebrates its 25th anniversary, its trajectory feels as ambitious as its origins. For those seeking a destination where land, sea, and sky converge in effortless harmony, Fox Harb’r remains in a league of its own.

VIRAL EYE TIGHTENER, MADE EASY

Ask anyone about their skin care goals and looking younger almost always makes the cut! For decades, consumer concerns about fine lines and wrinkles have inspired countless anti-aging moisturizers and eye creams. However, in the past year, there has been an increased focus on under-eye bags. “Products for under-eye bags” is now a trending search term on leading beauty retailer websites—and the #1 prestige eye treatment in America* is not an eye cream, but a viral eye tightener from Peter Thomas Roth Clinical Skin Care. With over 200 million TikTok views and counting, this solution for under-eye bags, fine lines, deep wrinkles and crow’s feet has achieved unprecedented success.

What makes products for under-eye bags such a hot topic among skin care consumers? To dive deeper into this trend, we turned to skin care guru Peter Thomas Roth himself! An influential segment leader in the beauty industry, Peter is known for creating clinically stronger formulas and leads all research and development efforts at his state-of-the-art lab and manufacturing facility.

The latest innovation to emerge from Peter’s lab is Instant FIRMx Eye Temporary Eye Tightener Easy-Wear Formula, a new version of his original viral eye-tightening favorite.

Tell us about your Instant FIRMx® Eye Temporary Eye Tighteners.

“Now my customers have two eye tighteners to choose from: My original Instant FIRMx Eye Temporary Eye Tightener and my new Instant FIRMx Eye Temporary Eye Tightener Easy-Wear Formula! I was thrilled with the viral response to the original and it continues to be very popular. However, if you’re new to skin-tightening products or have difficulty applying them, my easy-wear formula is perfect for you.”

What makes your new Instant FIRMx® Eye Temporary Eye Tightener Easy-Wear Formula unique?

“My new eye tightener provides clinically proven results in a user-friendly formula. It’s easy to apply and comfortable to wear, so everyone can use it and everyone can look fabulous! The sheer tinted formula blends seamlessly onto all skin types and tones, neutralizing any white cast while instantly reducing the appearance of under-eye bags, fine lines, deep wrinkles and crow’s feet… Brilliant!”

When it comes to under-eye bags, puffiness and other aging concerns, how are your eye tighteners different than eye creams?

“Eye creams can help improve the look of under-eye bags, puffiness, fine lines, deep wrinkles and crow’s feet in the long-term and I still recommend using one at night, such as my Potent-C Power Eye Cream or Water Drench Hyaluronic Cloud Hydrating Eye Gel. However, if you want to address these concerns and look years younger immediately, you’ll need my eye tighteners! My original Instant FIRMx Eye Temporary Eye Tightener and new Instant FIRMx Eye Temporary Eye Tightener Easy-Wear Formula are each formulated with my Firm-A-Tite blend of skin-tightening silicates and seaweed extract to give you that instant anti-aging effect. I also infused my eye tighteners with potent peptide technology to help reduce the look of under-eye bags, puffiness and elasticity loss with continued use. This means that when you wear my eye tighteners, you’re not just getting temporary anti-aging results, you’re also getting the long-term firming benefits of eye cream too!”

A thunderclap doesn’t ask permission to be heard—neither does Musah Swallah. His work lands like weather, not spectacle. There is no slow build, no preamble—only impact. Born in the electric pulse of Accra, Ghana, and now wielding his brush from the cultural furnace of New York, Swallah steps into the global art dialogue not as a newcomer, but as a necessary correction. His paintings do not beg for inclusion in the canon; they confront it—gloriously saturated, unrelentingly alive and forged from the marrow of migration, memory and myth. In a time when much of contemporary art clings to ironic distance or minimalist detachment, Swallah offers something far more dangerous: feeling. Not the tidy kind, but the unfiltered, borderless, ancestral kind. The kind that does not fit neatly in a frame, because it is already burning through the wall.

In a time when global art fairs clamor for the next sanitized “African aesthetic,” Swallah refuses the flattening. Contrarian in nature, his work is neither derivative nor decorative—it is sovereign. Already exhibited at respected institutions such as the N’Namdi Center for Contemporary Art and acquired by discerning private collectors across the United States and West Africa, Swallah’s meteoric ascent speaks not to trend but to a profound thirst for truth that only the most fearless can quench.

The saturated narrative is not only visibly noted—but spiritually as well. This can be readily witnessed in Swallah’s artistic lineage, which is both personal and historical. Trained initially through community mentorship in Ghana, he grew up surrounded by the folkloric rhythm of color and story. His visual language— shaped by a fusion of Akan tradition, Islamic pattern and panAfrican urgency—conjures the feeling of navigating Accra’s Makola Market at high noon: vibrant, sacred and unrelenting. Yet, this is no exoticism. His work is not a souvenir for Western comfort. It is a living archive of culture, exile, joy and resistance. It demands fluency in both geography and emotion.

What distinguishes Swallah from his contemporaries is his ability to fuse ancestral memory with modern dislocation. His figures—often surrounded by bold, textural grounds— are neither icons nor victims. They are meditative presences, often rendered with an intensity that borders on the mythic. Their eyes meet the viewer’s with unsettling directness,

Musah Swallah: A Reckoning of Color Musah Swallah: A Reckoning of Color

inviting neither pity nor praise, only witness. Each canvas becomes a reckoning—a call to recognize the intellectual depth and emotional charge embedded in diasporic life.

In recent months, collectors and curators alike have begun to take notice. His solo exhibitions in Michigan and his participation in panels on African visual culture have led to serious conversations about museum acquisitions. There is growing interest in positioning his work not only in contemporary galleries but within the context of global postcolonial discourse. Swallah’s art offers more than aesthetic pleasure—it provides visual theory. It interrogates what it means to carry homeland in the body while building a legacy in foreign soil.

Now, as he prepares to embark on a new body of work exploring abstraction, Swallah does not abandon figuration; rather, he expands it. These abstractions are not evasions but meditations—gestural invocations rooted in the same spiritual terrain that defined his earlier work. In this next chapter, he paints not only bodies but the spaces between them—the emotional architecture of belonging, migration and memory.

In the broader dialogue of contemporary African art, Swallah stands among a new vanguard unafraid to confront the aesthetic expectation of the Western gaze. He does not merely “represent” Ghana. He redefines it—layer by layer, color by searing color. His work pulses with the urgency of Kehinde Wiley, the soul-deep lyricism of Amoako Boafo and the philosophical edge of El Anatsui, while remaining entirely, unmistakably his own.

Musah Swallah is not asking to be included. He is building his own canon—one canvas at a time, each painting a sacred text in the language of fire, rhythm and truth.

the DESIGN MUSEUM to stage landmark exhibition on more-than-human design

More than Human

11 July – 5 October 2025 | the Design Museum

• Tickets are on sale for the Design Museum’s landmark exhibition “More than Human,” the first museum exhibition on more-thanhuman design.

• The exhibition is comprised of over 140 works by more than 50 participants, with several presenting new work, as well as four major commissions.

• This is the first major exhibition that has been jointly curated by the Design Museum and its national design research programme Future Observatory.

• Highlights include artworks for octopuses, a pavilion for multispecies encounters, a largescale seaweed installation, an enormous nature calendar and several new commissions .

This summer, the Design Museum staged a landmark exhibition on more-than-human design. “More than Human,” which opened on 11 July 2025, marks the first curatorial collaboration between the Design Museum and its national design research program, Future Observatory, in a major exhibition. From an enormous nature calendar to spaces designed for multispecies encounters, this exhibition aims to set a new direction for design based on humanity’s collaboration with the living world. “More than Human” refers to a growing design movement that questions the human-centric lens that has defined Western design practice and embraces the idea that the flourishing of all species is interconnected. More-thanhuman design calls for focused attention on the needs of environments and the species they host. Designers, architects and artists are increasingly directing their work towards the needs of non-human species. The approaches emerging range from the sharing of ancient knowledge to the design of new habitats

and, ultimately, the shifting of perspectives. Highlights include major new commissions by four designers who were supported with Future Observatory research fellowships. Alexandra Daisy Ginsberg is producing a vast new tapestry exploring the perspectives of pollinators, while an 8m-long mural by More Than Human Life Project (MOTH) depicts the growing movement to award legal rights to waterways around the world. The other research commissions are by the Brazilian architect Paulo Tavares and the Chinese spatial and visual designer Feifei Zhou. Meanwhile, the designer Julia Lohmann is creating a large-scale seaweed installation specifically for the exhibition, a series of organic forms that will hang from the ceiling in a circular shape mimicking a henge, or “Kelp Council.” The exhibition and new commissions are funded by Ukri’s Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC).

There are more than 50 artists, architects and designers in the exhibition, including Ant Farm, Marcus Coates, Dunne & Raby, Forensic Architecture, Formafantasma, Andrés Jaque, Julia Lohmann, Kate Orff/Scape, Solange Pessoa, Reef Design Lab, Diana Scherer, and DnA_Design and Architecture to name a few, several of whom are presenting new work.

By bringing together over 140 works spanning contemporary and traditional practices, fine art, product design, architecture and interactive installations, the exhibition will explore how humans can relearn to design with and for the natural world in the face of climate emergency.

Being Landscape

The exhibition is structured into three sections. Visitors will fi rst encounter “Being Landscape,” showcasing art and design that conveys the idea that humans are very much part of the natural world, not separate to it.

This section includes a major new commission, an 8m-long mural by MOTH, including lawyer César Rodriguez-Garavito, author Robert Macfarlane and illustrator Elena Landinez. The

expansive mural depicts a sprawling network of interconnected rivers decorated with a myriad of illustrations of animals, plant life and text, addressing the growing movement to award legal rights to waterways around the world.

Also featured here are three paintings by Brazilian artist Solange Pessoa, whose work dissolves the boundaries between human, animal and vegetal and evokes the animistic beliefs of Indigenous peoples. On loan from Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo will be a painting by artist and former rubber tapper Hélio Melo, whose works record his personal relationship with the forest and the longstanding threat to the Brazilian Amazon from global agribusiness.

Our relationship with trees is also examined through a European lens with photographic works by Federico Borella and Michela Balboni, who document the ancestral ritual in Southern Italy of the “Rumiti,” tree-men covered in ivy who act as living symbols of a deep connection with nature and its preservation. Renowned British artist Johnathan Baldock will present a series of bronze-cast cornhusk masks inspired by pagan corn dollies. Baldock’s interest in craft and working-class histories stems from his family’s agricultural background in Kent, England.

This idea of weaving one’s relationship with the land into crafted objects can also be observed with the Ye’kuana, an Indigenous community in the Venezuelan Amazon who are renowned for their basketry, several examples of which will be on show in the exhibition.

Marcus Coates’ Nature Calendar functions as a reminder of the parallel lives and activities of the species we live amongst. The days of Coates’s calendar each reference a natural event, recalling a time when humans would once recognize the passage of time through minute seasonal shifts. Visitors to the exhibition will be able to see what natural phenomenon is taking place on the exact day they visit the museum.

Making with the World

The second section, “Making with the World,” provides both practical and speculative design solutions that are made for the benefit of plants, animals and environments.

On show will be historical fishing traps from communities in the UK, Myanmar, Indonesia, Nicobar Islands and the Waswahili (Swahili) people demonstrate how traditional, localised techniques are far less impactful on marine ecosystems compared to modern fi shing.

This section also features contemporary design innovations that help restore damaged and dying marine ecosystems such as coral reefs. Reef Design Lab’s Living Seawalls, a manmade habitat for marine life, will be exhibited alongside the lab’s Modular Artificial Reef Structure II, which is dropped to the ocean floor to help regenerate and repopulate natural reef structures.

Traveling from the ocean to land, the exhibition recreates a version of the award-winning Alusta Pavilion designed by architects Elina Koivisto and Maiju Suomi, fi rst constructed in Helsinki in 2022. The pavilion’s main structure will be built using unfi red, mass-produced insulation bricks to create a form that provides shelter for humans and insects alike. Designed as a space for multispecies encounters, the pavilion demonstrates how architecture can encourage biodiversity in urban environments.

German designer Johanna Seelemann incorporates her research into historic irrigation practices into a contemporary design approach with her works entitled Oase. On show will be several terracotta vessels that are designed improve the conditions of tress in urban spaces that were inspired by the forms of car fuel tanks.

Shifting Perspective

The fi nal section, “Shifting Perspective,” asks us to consider how plants and animals perceive the world and identify their place within it.

This section includes nests from various species including wasps, ants and birds, intricate structures that provide a glimpse into the needs and decision-making of these creatures. It also features a seminal early work of more-than-human design by the art collective Ant Farm. Dolphin Embassy, from 1974, was an extensive research project that sought to build a marine center for communication between humans and dolphins.

Japanese artist Shimabuku’s long-term fascination with the behavior of octopuses is

on display, conveyed through the small glass balls he created for Sculpture for Octopuses: Exploring for Their Favorite Colors, which will be exhibited alongside a slideshow documenting the octopuses’ reactions.

Future Observatory fellow Alexandra Daisy Ginsberg will present a new iteration of her artwork Pollinator Pathmaker, a vibrant tapestry depicting a potential living artwork. Reminding us of the need for empathy for other species, the tapestry shows the unrealized garden from the perspective of a pollinating insect. Ginsberg is one of four Fellows who received funding to conduct research and produce a new work for the exhibition. Her tapestry incorporates research from her work with the Eden Project to create an algorithm that could design planting schemes for gardens that specifi cally cater to the needs of pollinator species.

The exhibition concludes with a monumental seaweed installation by Julia Lohmann, a German-born designer and researcher who investigates and critiques the ethical and material value systems underpinning our relationship with flora and fauna. Lohmann created a compelling new installation that visitors will be able to walk through, surrounding them with the smells and materiality of coastal zones.

For the last three years Future Observatory, the Design Museum’s national research program for the green transition, in partnership with the Arts and Humanities Research Council, has funded more than 100 research projects pursuing more sustainable design. Future Observatory has showcased this research through several free displays on the top floor of the museum, acting as an example for how museums and cultural institutions can integrate meaningful sustainable initiatives into a cultural program. “More than Human” is a major milestone in Future Observatory’s mission to harness the cultural power of the Design Museum to engage broad audiences in new thinking that can help drive the green transition.

“More than Human” is co-curated by Future Observatory director Justin McGuirk and the Design Museum’s senior curator Rebecca Lewin and will be accompanied by a lavishly illustrated catalogue.

Tim Marlow, director and CEO of the Design Museum said, “It’s important for museums and cultural institutions to respond to the complex issues facing our planet and society at present. It’s also important to shift perspectives from a human-centric view of the world to one closer

to nature which will make this a landmark exhibition in every sense. “More than Human” will showcase some of the ground-breaking work that Future Observatory has done at the museum and beyond over the last three years, a blend of extensive sustainable research, critical thinking and advocacy which is central to our cultural programming.”

Justin McGuirk, director of Future Observatory said, “This is not just another exhibition about ‘sustainable design,’ this is a radical rethink of design’s role in the world. While much of the work in the exhibition is nascent or exploratory, it represents a fundamental shift in worldview toward humans using design not just for their own benefit but for the fl ourishing of the living systems we depend upon. ‘More than Human’ is what design needs to become in the 21st century.”

Rebecca Lewin, senior curator at the Design Museum said, “We want people to leave the exhibition feeling inspired and informed but also hopeful for the future. The huge network of issues raised by the climate crisis can feel overwhelming, but the fi elds of design, art and architecture are finding creative and often beautiful solutions for the needs of the planet. It has been heartening to collaborate with such an incredible group of talented creative minds from across the globe to bring this project together.”

To accompany the exhibition, the Design Museum will host a series of relevant workshops and events, including a “More than Human” symposium, bringing together thought leaders and industry experts to discuss the ideas explored in the exhibition as well as consider new design initiatives in response to the ongoing climate crisis. To coincide with the exhibition, there will be a Pollinator Pathmaker DIY Edition planted at St Mary Abbots Gardens in Kensington. Children from a local school will use the planting algorithmic garden generator tool developed by Alexandra Daisy Ginsberg to create a pollinator-friendly planting scheme and planting instructions.

BENTLEY MEEKER

THE LIGHTING GURU

Bentley Meeker
Photos courtesy of Guerin Blask

Born in Roanoke, Virginia, contemporary artist and lighting mogul Bentley Meeker landed himself in New York in the summer of 1977— meaning his introduction to the city was the aftermath of the infamous citywide blackout. While most were deterred by the chaos that ensued, Meeker thought to himself, “You know what? This place is crazy. This is where I want to be.” This sentiment of straying from the norm would go on to define both his career and life— with Oscar Wilde’s quote, saying, “Everything popular is wrong,” serving as his mantra.

During his decades-long tenure in New York, Meeker has made an indelible mark on the city—from creating “The ‘H’ in Harlem,” a large-scale public art installation under the viaduct at 125th St. and 12th Ave., to being the first artist of any kind to have work in The Whitney’s Meatpacking location. He has put up solo shows at the National Arts Club, the Core club, and multiple galleries in Chelsea and Soho. However, his art reaches far beyond the five boroughs. Meeker has been a multiyear featured artist at the Burning Man festival, creating the lighting for the Temple in 2011, 2013 and 2015, and was commissioned by Michelle Obama to create a sculpture for the Nordic State Dinner.

THE STARVING ARTIST

Although Meeker’s clientele now includes the likes of Paul McCartney, Rihanna, Beyoncé and Mariah Carey, his origins were far from glamorous. After getting kicked out of college and his parents’ house within the span of 24 hours, he needed a job. Any job. Fortuitously, he stumbled upon the theater at Hunter College. “I was sitting in that theater and they were hanging lights. I knew how to do that, and so I went up there and asked them for work,” he said. What started solely as a means to feed himself turned into his passion. “There was a moment when I realized people act differently under different types of light—how people gravitate toward it. There was a kind of visceral reaction. I was able to see an artistic quality that was deeper than playing with paint,” he explained.

LIGHTING AND STAGING

Meeker’s fascination with lighting is the premise for his company, Bentley Meeker Lighting and Staging, which creates lighting designs for weddings (including Chelsea Clinton’s), corporate events, bat mitzvahs and film premieres, to name but a few. Since its inception, the company has completed tens of thousands of events. “Taste is completely subjective, but at the same time, I trust my own, and many other people do as well,” he said. The

company has also opened a secret recording studio and rehearsal space called Bentley House. Spanning four floors, the space includes interconnected studios, five bedrooms, a chef’s kitchen, a 2,400-square-foot roof deck and a drive-in garage to maintain clients’ anonymity.

THE POWER OF LIGHTS

Meeker’s reaction to the power of lights led him to working as a contemporary artist, where he blurs the lines between technology, art and philosophy. “I realized that everyone was using light to move outward, but no one was asking, ‘What does it mean to move into the light?’” Meeker’s artistic resume reimagines light as a central subject and philosophical inquiry. While most artistic disciplines use light to enhance or dramatize their message, Meeker’s work pauses to consider what light actually is. “I’m an artist. My job isn’t necessarily to explain what something is—it’s to get you asking the right questions,” he said. “There are plenty of scientists out there who are much smarter than I am and can tell you exactly what light is. But for me, it’s about exploring the different possibilities.”

FINDING PURPOSE

For Meeker, the creative process always begins with asking, “What do I want to say?” “Sometimes, I don’t know the message at first,” he said. “Either I wait until I care enough to do the work—or I start and trust that the message will reveal itself.” Once he identifies his purpose, everything else falls into alignment. The materials, the arrangement, even the specific technologies he uses become secondary to the emotional and conceptual resonance of the piece. “You can organize the same elements with or without intention,” he said. “But the version with intention always has a kind of magic.”

Meeker is especially deliberate in how he balances technology with artistic meaning. He resists the temptation to let tools overshadow truth. “Sometimes, the tech becomes the message,” he said. “But for me, it always comes back to the ‘why.’ If it doesn’t serve the message, it doesn’t belong.” His process is about distilling ideas down to their essence, then building up from there. “I’m not trying to impress people,” he said. “I’m trying to get them to ask better questions.”

With buyers moving into their high-style homes at The 74, it’s officially a new era of luxury living on the Upper East Side. Prestigious New York City developer Elad Group, along with Douglas Elliman Development Marketing, proudly announced that closings are underway at the neighborhood’s new “it” building. Designed by Pelli Clarke & Partners with interiors by AD100 alumni designer Rafael de Cárdenas, The 74 modernizes the experience of living in Manhattan’s most storied and desirable neighborhood, lauding full-floor layouts with 360-degree Central Park and skyline views, a duplex penthouse with expansive terraces and a singular townhome.

Strong sales at The 74 reflect the demand for high-quality, contemporary residences on the Upper East Side. This neighborhood stands out in 2025 as the strongest market for new development, with Manhattan’s luxury real estate sector enjoying its best first quarter in six years—driven by a surge in ultra-high-net-worth buyers and a robust appetite for exclusive, amenityrich homes.

“The 74 is designed to meet the expectations of today’s most discerning buyers and the lifestyle they want on the Upper East Side,” said Elyse Leff, executive vice president of marketing and sales at Elad Group. “With architecture by Pelli Clarke & Partners and interiors by Rafael de Cárdenas, we are delivering striking modern homes paired with the perfect suite of amenities.”

Douglas Elliman Development Marketing’s all-star team—Barbara Russo, Danielle Englebardt, Elena Sarkissian and Christopher Salierno—is driving sales. “The 74 is a rare opportunity for buyers who want the best of Manhattan living: timeless design, privacy and a sense of community in the city’s most desirable neighborhood,” said Barbara Russo, director of sales for The 74.

The tower’s pleated white terracotta facade and bronze-framed windows create a striking, contemporary silhouette that pays homage to New York’s Art Deco heritage. Inside, Rafael de Cárdenas’ interiors feature European White Oak flooring in an oversized parquet pattern, custom millwork and floor-to-ceiling windows by Polito Serramenti. Kitchens are appointed with Ash cabinetry, Bianco ice marble countertops and backsplashes, and fully integrated Miele appliances. Primary bathrooms offer Calacatta Vagli marble, custom Sycamore vanities and Dornbracht fixtures, while powder rooms are finished with Pink Namibia marble and brushed platinum accents.

Among the most sought-after offerings at The 74 are its full-floor residences, which redefine luxury living on the Upper East Side. These expansive homes boast spectacular views of Central Park and the midtown skyline, with light streaming in from four exposures to create a bright, airy ambiance throughout the day. With total privacy and direct access to all of the building’s world-class amenities, these homes are a true rarity in Manhattan’s competitive real estate market.

Almost all of The 74’s amenities are positioned on the 17th floor to maximize natural light and city views. Notably, the fitness center, Pilates studio and lounge with wet bar offer residents inspiring views of the city skyline while they work out or entertain. Even the powder room on this level is bathed in natural light, underscoring the building’s commitment to elevating every aspect of the resident experience. Residents also enjoy a discreet lobby, private garden, library lounge and a children’s playroom.

Prices at The 74 range from approximately $2.995 million for a twobedroom to $13.55 million for a full-floor five-bedroom with Central Park views. Pricing for the penthouse and townhouse is available upon request.

aren LeFrak has filled many roles throughout her life, wife—mother, grandmother, teacher, author and poodle breeder. She is also an accomplished composer with a catalogue of over 300 works and a worldwide performance history that includes the New York Philharmonic, the Shanghai Symphony and the Mariinsky Ballet Orchestra.

It’s been a busy summer for LeFrak, and she shows no signs of slowing down. Fresh off the celebration of Romántico, her guitar concerto collaboration with Grammy-winning guitarist Sharon Isbin and the Orchestra of St. Luke’s, LeFrak is already looking ahead to multiple milestones. She is preparing for the release of her 15th solo piano album, “Consolation,” while also readying an ambitious orchestral project, “American Promise.” Timed to the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, the new album features the title track, commissioned by the National Symphony Orchestra, alongside the sweeping Lady Liberty Suite— consisting of “Lady Liberty—Arrival,” “Lady Liberty—The City,” and “Lady Liberty—A New Land.” It will conclude with “Prairie Dawn,” a new work for solo clarinet and strings. With the single “American Promise” set to debut in February 2026, coinciding with its world premiere by the National Symphony Orchestra, LeFrak is orchestrating a summer that blends celebration with anticipation.

Fairytale Romance

LeFrak, who is married to New York real estate developer Richard LeFrak, has embraced each facet with exceptional passion and vigor, and she spoke to us about her very fulfilling life with warmth, humor and a “pinch-me” sense of gratitude.

Even the story of her marriage is like a fairytale romance; she first met her husband Richard when she was 15 and he was 17 at a party attended by both of their families. “His father took me by the hand and said to Richard, ‘I‘ve known this little girl since she was born. Ask her to dance,’” LeFrak said. “And Richard asked me to dance, and I looked up at him—he was six foot three and I was five foot two—and I thought, oh my God, he is just amazing, with a great shock of blond hair and the bluest eyes. I had a mad crush on him.”

They dated on-and-off for seven years, and he proposed on

Valentine’s Day of her senior year in college. “We got engaged and 54 years later, here we are.” They have two sons, five grandchildren and two poodles, and split their time between Manhattan, Southampton and Miami.

Thriving Music Career

LeFrak is a natural-born musician who began playing the piano by ear at age three, and in the sixth grade wrote her first song, which was performed at her Merrick, Long Island school. “It was called ‘I’ll Sing,’ and when I played it for the music teacher, she had the whole school sing it at an assembly.” LeFrak’s father sat in the front row, beaming. “I’ll sing for pleasure. I’ll sing with delight, I’ll sing with my heart, I’ll sing with all my might.” LeFrak recalled the lyrics, laughing, “They sounded like a Hallmark greeting card.”

In high school LeFrak joined the choir, and her talent took her far. “I learned the rudiments of harmony because we were singing in four parts: soprano, alto, tenor, bass,” she explained. “If you have a good ear, you can apply that to the instruments in the orchestra’s woodwinds, brass and strings sections.” She excelled in music theory classes. “I could always count on my music grade to bring up my whole average.”

Life took her in different directions, and LeFrak only became serious about a music career as an adult, once her children were grown, but it was always alive in her. She even taught music at her children’s nursery school. “I didn’t want to leave them alone at the school, so the director of the school found a job for me.

“I was sorry I didn’t major in music at Mt. Holyoke College, where I earned my BA degree cum laude,” she said. “So around 1986, I returned to school to pursue a master’s degree in musicology from Hunter College.” Her award-winning thesis, which won the Dean’s Award in Arts and Humanities, surveyed the commissioning activity of the New York Philharmonic from 1842 to 1986. “I was inspired to study piano seriously after hearing a friend perform the four Chopin Ballades at a house concert. I was so taken by her performance that I couldn’t get out of my chair. I arranged for lessons and practiced several hours a day. After a while, when my piano coach went to the hospital, I composed my first solo piano miniature instead of playing my repertoire. My teacher was impressed and encouraged me to continue! I felt I could never play or interpret what I heard as well as I wanted, so I made a conscious decision to give up playing and only compose instead. It was my goal to have my grandchildren (whom I didn’t even have yet) know that their grandmother was a composer. I wrote a lullaby for each when they were born. Polly’s lullaby later became the Whale’s theme in ‘Sleepover at the Museum.’”

From piano, she went on to study composition and, with the help of notation software and two very able professional musicians—a conductor and scholar—taught herself to arrange music for multiple instruments. There, followed solo, chamber and orchestral compositions, which were performed by ballet companies, chamber groups and orchestras.

Composing Every Day

LeFrak continues to compose piano miniatures every day and describes them as having lyric melodies with interesting harmonic structures that say the most with the fewest notes. When asked about creating that number of compositions, she replied, “Where does the inspiration come from to make 300 individual paintings?” Even as a child, when LeFrak improvised, her mother told her she could always tell how she felt by her music.

For the most part, the one word that drives the origin of my works is emotion.

Brimming With New Projects

And she’s been busier than ever in recent years; the pandemic provided much time for reflection, creativity and inspiration, leading to LeFrak recording and releasing 13 studio albums since 2021.

“They include such titles as ‘Interlude,’ ‘Tomorrow,’ ‘Gratitude,’ ‘Clarity,’ ‘Continuum’ and ‘Awakening,’” she said. “The latest are titled ‘Penumbra,’ ‘Gemstones,’ ‘Verdure’ and ‘Echo.’ There are 40 solo piano pieces being recorded.”

Superstar violinist Joshua Bell praised LeFrak’s first album project, Interlude, saying, “Karen LeFrak is a true renaissance woman. One can find much-needed peace and comfort in this beautiful collection of piano miniatures.” Music industry powerhouse David Foster also weighed in on her debut album, saying, “Karen LeFrak’s melodies are haunting, memorable and simply complex. Melody is king and Ms. LeFrak does not disappoint.”

This last fall LeFrak, released a holiday album, “Christmas Cookies,” consisting of chamber music. Karen’s streaming totals now exceed 50 million.

Venues: Lincoln Center, Kennedy Center, White House & ABT

LeFrak’s works have been commissioned and performed across the United States, Europe, Russia and Asia, including at David Geffen Hall and the Koch Theatre at Lincoln Center, Kennedy Center, Mariinsky Theatre in Saint Petersburg, Moscow’s Kremlin for the 250th anniversary of the Bolshoi Ballet School, Symphony Space in New York, National Sawdust in Brooklyn, Bethel Woods Arts Center, Festival Napa Valley and the White House, where her musical works “Acceptance” and “The New Yorker Trio” were performed at an International Women’s Day luncheon.

Miami Concerto Debuts in the U.S. Capitol

A highlight last year was the premiere of “Miami Concerto for Guitar and Orchestra” by the Miami Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Eduardo Marturet with the Grammy Award-winning guitarist, Sharon Isbin, as soloist. Its first movement was performed at the National Symphony Orchestra’s annual Labor Day concert on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol—also with Isbin—and conducted by Enrico Lopez-Yañez. It was performed at the Aspen Music Festival this summer, as well as at the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. A recording of a chamber orchestral version of this piece was conducted by Lopez-Yañez with Isbin as the soloist and the Orchestra of St. Luke’s.

‘Cover’ Assignment—Beyonce & Rihanna

LeFrak was floored to be asked to submit music for the new television series “Queen Charlotte,” a spinoff of “Bridgerton.” “They gave me the assignment of taking a Beyonce and Rihanna piece, and developing classical versions of them,” she said. “I had such fun doing that!” In the end, her composition did not make the cut, but the experience proved useful—one of the instruments she chose was the celesta, a keyboard instrument with a delicate, bell-like tone similar to a glockenspiel. When it was time for her Christmas album, she featured it. “In the ‘Sugar Plum Fairy,’ in the Nutcracker, it’s the very high, crystally, tinkly instrument that immediately says joy. So, the celesta made the piano and chamber pieces on my album sparkle.”

Children’s Books

When she launched her career as a composer, LeFrak also made her debut as an author of children’s books, to much acclaim. The first two, “Jake the Philharmonic Dog” and “Jake the Ballet Dog,” introduced young people to the worlds of music and dance. The idea for this canine character came from LeFrak’s work with the New York Philharmonic; the principal stagehand actually had a mixed-breed terrier named Jake, a well-loved presence backstage, serving as mascot, greeter and stress-reliever.

As an author, LeFrak has been invited to speak and read at schools, museums, bookstores and concert halls throughout the country, including the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County, Miami’s Frost Museum of Science and New York City’s famed public library.

In her third book, “Best in Show,” LeFrak shared her passion for raising and breeding standard poodles. Her most recent book, “Sleepover at the Museum” (2019), was named a 2020 International Literacy Association CBC Children’s Choice title. She decided to write a musical composition to Sleepover, which has now been played all over the world. After its premiere in Miami, it was performed in Shanghai, Beijing, Washington, D.C., California, Omaha, Montana, Singapore, Winston-Salem, Nashville and New York. A ballet version was performed in Chicago and Guatemala; it will have future bookings in Winston-Salem and Anchorage. “I’ve witnessed conductors and orchestra members on stage in pajamas!,” she says.

While LeFrak has published four successful books, she’s written three others that did not make it into print. Instead, she had them illustrated and bound and gave them to her grandchildren. “One of them was about their dog, and another was about a dog who went to the hospital to bring comfort to medically fragile children and adults.”

LeFrak started the pet therapy program at Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York and brought her own dogs there. She also brought her dogs to NYU Hospital and to the piers to comfort victims and families of 9/11. “It was one of the most rewarding volunteer jobs I ever had.”

Palermo

Argentinian Bistro Opens a Second Location in Gramercy Park

Palermo Argentinian Bistro Gramercy is an offshoot of Palermo’s Hell’s Kitchen location. This popular Argentine steakhouse, which has been well-received by the media and New Yorkers alike, draws its inspiration from the vibrant Palermo neighborhood in Buenos Aires, known for its Spanish Colonial architecture, stylish restaurants, lively bars and a hip, youthful energy.

At the helm is Owner Orhan Cakir, (Pierre Loti, a beloved Mediterranean tapas and wine bar); Executive Chef and Partner Carlos Barroz, (Palermo Theatre District); and Managing Partner Victor Medina, (La Pulperia). The team aims to deliver an experience that reflects the heart of Argentinian culture to Gramercy Park.

The restaurant specializes in traditional Argentine steak dishes, known for their slowcooked, open-fire method of barbecuing, as well as ceviche, crudos, mixed grill and a grand seafood tower. All dishes are generously portioned and intended for sharing.

Chef Carlos was born in Argentina into a family of restaurateurs. He learned to cook from his relatives and mastered butchery from his grandfather. Since moving to New York in 2001, he has worked across a range of global cuisines, including French, Italian and Peruvian. Palermo is his tribute to the flavors of his homeland, rich with Italian and Spanish influences and rooted in Argentina’s beloved tradition of steak and barbecue.

The best way to experience Palermo’s steak is the Parrillada for Two, a traditional Argentinian grill platter curated by Chef Carlos. This feast features skirt steak, sirloin, short ribs, sweetbreads, chicken, chorizo and blood sausage, all served with house-made chimichurri, salsa criolla, with a choice of two sides, such as Grilled Asparagus with saffron aioli or Humita with onions, pimentón de la Vera and melted mozzarella.

Starters include the Beef Tartare, hand-cut tenderloin, capers, chives, chimi oil and quail eggs, topped with caviar and served with toast; and Grilled Octopus, with Russian potato salad and aji amarillo.

The Raw Bar and Crudos feature Trout Crudo, smoked aguachile negro, chimi oil and salmon roe; Ceviche Rojo, octopus, shrimp and white fish with cilantro, red onion, jalapeño, and served with tostadas; and a Seafood Tower with oysters, shrimp, whole 1 ¼ lb lobster, trio of crudos, king crab legs and oyster shooters.

Entrees include NY Strip Milanese, an Argentinian classic that substitutes the traditional pork or chicken for a cut of NY Strip Steak dotted with saffron aioli, served with a green salad and mashed potatoes; Palermo Burger, dry-aged ribeye and prime short rib blend, with Boston lettuce, tomatoes, red onions, Vermont cheddar cheese and chimi truffle aioli, packed into a brioche bun and served with fries; and the Halibut served with broccolini, salsa gaucha and sun-dried tomatoes tapenade.

From The Grill served with chimichurri or salsa criolla, and a choice of side, a 12-ounce Picanha, a 16-ounce Ribeye and a Tomahawk for Two, as well as Half Murray Chicken, with orange-curry-capers sauce, Sweetbreads, and Chorizo & Morcilla.

For Desserts, there are Alfajores, traditional Argentinian sandwich pastries filled with dulce de leche, rolled in coconut flakes, and Bread Pudding with dulce de leche ice cream.

The wine program , curated by Sommelier Tayfun Saracoglu (Advanced Court of Master Sommelier), formerly of Temple Bar at the Beekman Hotel and Mandarin Oriental, features an all-Argentinian selection. The list is dominantly organic and biodynamic. Sourced from the diverse mountain ranges and fertile valleys across Argentina showcasing the country’s exceptional terroir and winemaking heritage.

Bottle selections, recommended by Tayfun, include reds like Zuccardi Concreto Malbec or Catena Zapata “River Stones” Malbec; white wines such as Torrentes, El Enemigo, Gran Enemigo and Sauvignon Blanc Mariflor; and select sparkling wine, Zuccardi Alma 4 Blanc de Blanc.

highlights include the Tinto de Verano, Pisco Demonio de los Andes, fresh lime, mint, sprite and malbec; Chimichurri Martini, Tito’s vodka “dirty” chimichurri infusion garnished with blue cheese olives for a savory finish; and Fuego, mezcal joven, Aldez silver tequila, rum, passionfruit, pomegranate, and finished with coconut flakes.

Ambiance & Decor

Tucked along a beautiful, tree-lined stretch of Irving Place in Gramercy Park, the entrance to the new Palermo welcomes guests with the charm of a rustic farmhouse. Inside, a striking L-shaped white marble bar immediately catches the eye, accented in Argentina’s signature colors: blue, gold and white. The bar itself is clad in rich blue tile and lined with tan-gold leather stools, set against a glowing backdrop of top-shelf spirits and liqueurs.

The restaurant is divided into two distinct dining areas. The front room offers a more relaxed, casual ambiance, while the main dining space further in invites guests to linger in intimate comfort. Here, navy velvet banquettes and matching chairs provide cozy seating, while whitewashed brick walls—adorned with oversized mirrors and the sculpted heads of Argentine gauchos—add both character and depth.

The large alfresco dining patio is great for people watching, sipping on refreshing cocktails and savoring the bold, fire-kissed flavors of Buenos Aires.

ATIK

BRINGS REFINED MEDITERRANEAN DINING TO CITY ISLAND’S WATERFRONT

ATIK, the newest addition to City Island, is a premier dining destination from restaurateur Rafael Robles, who is also behind the adjacent waterfront Latin fusion venue, Vistamar. For this venture, Robles partnered with Josh DeCuffa, a lifelong City Island resident and real estate entrepreneur whose roots run deep in the community. Josh’s grandfather founded the beloved Jack’s Bait and Tackle in 1945, a cherished waterfront shop that still serves locals and boaters today, as well as the City Island Marina.

Continuing his family’s legacy at ATIK, Josh and Rafael bring that same spirit of heritage and community to the table, reimagining the island’s culinary landscape. The modern Mediterranean waterfront restaurant, situated against the tranquil backdrop of Eastchester Bay, will offer a unique dock-and-dine experience, featuring a large outdoor patio ideal for a New York summer sunset, creating an inviting atmosphere designed for relaxation and escape from the bustling city.

ATIK spans 5,500 square feet and stands out with a design inspired by the warmth and style of a Mediterranean villa. Guests enter through pale wood doors next to a backlit “ATIK” sign, stepping onto black-and-white hexagon tiles that lead into a tall, open dining room. Sandcolored stucco walls are decorated with classical

Greek and Roman busts and vases. In the center, three large, tree-like pale wood columns rise to the ceiling, surrounded by beds of faux greenery. The space combines comfort and style with forest green banquettes, tan leather chairs and light wood tables set on cool gray stone floors. Heading towards the outdoor dining space, a beige quartz bar glows softly, with shelves of high-end spirits displayed behind it. ATIK is designed to flow naturally from indoors to outdoors. The marina-side patio features white banquettes, straw chairs and white marble tables under yellow-and-white striped beach umbrellas. A cozy fi re pit and breezy striped curtains complete the relaxed, coastal feel. There is a private dining room, ideal for celebrations or intimate gatherings.

General Manager Ricardo Monegro, formerly of Blue Hill at Stone Barns and The Castle at Tarrytown, amongst others, will oversee service operations, ensuring the high standards, consistency and overall experience are maintained.

Leading the kitchen is Executive Chef José Castillo, whose culinary journey began in the Dominican Republic. At a young age, Castillo took charge of his family meals, learning to cook from his mother. Relying on instinct rather than formal training, he developed a deep love for bold fl avors and the creative freedom of the kitchen.

His passion eventually led him to New York, where he worked his way through the ranks in professional kitchens before leading him to Toro Toro in Miami then Tambo 22 in Boston. Now at the helm of ATIK, Chef Castillo has crafted his vision of modern Mediterranean cuisine, blending the classic fl avors and traditions of the region with a fresh, contemporary twist.

The Raw bar includes American Wagyu Carpaccio, thinly sliced wagyu with arugula, capers, pecorino cheese, pesto, and fi nished with mustard aioli; Hamachi Tiradito, with avocado, spicy mayo, lime-soy sauce and cilantro; and Siberian sturgeon Caviar Service.

Appetizers feature Eggplant Croquettes with pomodoro sauce, basil, feta cheese and shaved pecorino; Little Neck Clams, cooked in white wine and garlic, fi nished with basil and served with focaccia; and Crab Cakes, pan-seared Maryland lump crab, lentils and mustard aioli.

INTRODUCING STRONGER WITH YOU PARFUM

THE LIBERATING ENERGY FOUND IN TOGETHERNESS

Introducing Emporio Armani Stronger With You Parfum, a captivating and head-turning new fragrance embodying the liberating energy found in togetherness. Intertwining the signature chestnut accord with a spicy and warm leathered vanilla, this smooth scent leaves an unforgettable 24-hour lasting impression, all captured in the signature Stronger With You flacon.

To embody the powerful allure of Stronger With You Parfum, Emporio Armani unveiled a campaign starring a charismatic new global ambassador, actor Nicholas Galitzine. Dancing amidst his energetic crew to the strains of Underworld’s iconic ’90s track “Born Slippy,” the actor showcases the strength and freedom found in togetherness, as he is immersed in the warm cast of a vibrant party atmosphere.

Filmed in a setting reminiscent of the fragrance’s own amber hue, the film, directed by french director Jonathan Alric, captures both the scent’s intensity and the contagious energy of togetherness, echoing the exhilarating feeling of shared moments.

THE INTENSITY OF TOGETHERNESS

A fougère ambery leathery fragrance, Stronger With You Parfum has been crafted by Cécile Matton (Mane), the perfumer behind all the Stronger With You fragrances. The scent is defined by its leather accord, in which its soft, velvety effect creates the newest enthralling facet of Stronger With You.

“In Stronger With You Parfum, the aromatic freshness of lavender is enhanced by vibrant spicy notes, while the chestnut takes on an intense leathery nuance, offering a trail that is both refined and magnetic,” said Matton.

Green, fruity and spicy notes, led by a pink pepper extract, create the scent’s vibrant opening. Obtained from the pink pepper tree, this fruit is shaped to create the fragrance’s pink pepper jungle essence, lending Stronger With You Parfum its fresh, spicy facets. Blending with the pink pepper is elemi, a balsamic note derived from the resin of tropical trees,

and the sparkling notes of mandarin essential oil and a fruity apple accord.

Warmth and intensity intermingle in the fragrance’s compelling, aromatic heart, as clary sage heart and lavandin heart—both sourced from Provence—intertwine. Lavandin heart Provence reveals vibrant, aromatic and floral facets, while clary sage heart Provence, an aromatic plant renowned for its healing properties, evokes herbaceous, fresh and floral tones. Cinnamon essential oil brings an ambery warmth to these botanical notes.

The fragrance’s addictive, enthralling embrace is captured in its longlasting base notes. Here, the Stronger With You signature sugar-coated chestnut accord is lent a new sense of sophistication as it fuses with vanilla bourbon premium, sourced from Madagascar, with its deep, intense note. A leather accord brings the base its soft, velvety texture, while cedar wood essential oil, obtained from upcycled cedarwood shavings, lends a woody vibrance.

Experience the enduring power of Stronger With You Parfum. This sophisticated fragrance, featuring the iconic chestnut accord intertwined with notes of leather, vanilla and amber, lingers on the skin for 24 hours, making it the perfect choice for any season.

A CELEBRATION OF UNITY

The Stronger With You Parfum campaign immerses you in a world of contagious energy and intense connection. Directed by Jonathan Alric, the film marks Nicholas Galitzine’s debut as Emporio Armani’s global fragrance ambassador.

Transported through the fragrance bottle, we’re immersed into a dimly lit club, seemingly contained within the bottle’s cap. Amidst his energetic crew, Galitzine moves to the iconic strains of Underworld’s “Born Slippy,” with the Emporio Armani eagle shadowing his every move. Bathed in amber hues mirroring the fragrance itself, this powerful film evokes the strength and freedom found in togetherness.

Since his 2014 debut, Nicholas Galitzine has captivated audiences with his versatility, embracing diverse roles across genres and earning both critical acclaim and a devoted following. This fearless immersion into every character makes him the perfect embodiment of the Stronger With You spirit.

A DEEPLY DISTINGUISHED FLACON

The aromatic intensity and sensuality of Stronger With You Parfum is echoed in the fragrance’s statement bottle. The flacon is now dressed in a graduated lacquering with a deep, ambery tone that echoes the fragrance’s signature sugared chestnut accord. The flacon is crafted in the iconic Emporio Armani Stronger With You shape, whose strong lines and curves nod to a masculine silhouette.

The bottle’s blackened silver cap, meanwhile, is designed with the interlacing rings motif that defines the Stronger With You fragrances, emblematic of the feeling of unity that this range encapsulates.

THE SCENTS OF TOGETHERNESS

Stronger With You Parfum is the latest compelling new fragrance added to the Stronger With You collection, building on Emporio Armani’s

celebration of togetherness. The full range includes:

Stronger With You Eau De Toilette: A spicy, masculine fragrance that conveys a confident elegance, blending cardamom, pink peppercorn and violet leaves with an aromatic lavender and sage heart, before revealing base notes of smoky vanilla jungle essence and the fragrance’s signature sugar-coated chestnut accord.

Stronger With You Intensely: An addictive fougère fragrance, fusing spicy pink pepper top notes with aromatic lavender and sage, and the intensity of amber woods, vanilla and the signature sugared chestnut accord.

Stronger With You Absolutely: This powerful, sensual fragrance is defined by a rum accord, which intertwines with the fragrance’s signature chestnut accord. Blending with these notes are aromatic lavandin, warm vanilla and smoky cedarwood.

Stronger With You Parfum: The newest addition to the collection. A distinctive fragrance that captures an enthralling intensity, embodied in its vanilla, leathery interpretation of Stronger With You’s signature sugared chestnut accord.

INGREDIENTS MINDFUL OF THE PLANET

Armani beauty prioritizes ingredients sourced with respect for both people and the planet. Among the sustainably sourced ingredients in Stronger With You Parfum are vanilla bourbon premium, clary sage heart and lavandin heart.

The vanilla bourbon premium is sourced in Madagascar’s Sava region, via a process that sees each vanilla flower hand-pollinated during its 24-hour blossoming period. Nine months later, the vanilla pods are picked, with the scent extracted via a meticulous process that begins with blanching, steaming and drying the pods. The extract is then obtained via a supercritical CO2 extraction method, before it is concentrated, to create a scent that is extremely close to the vanilla pod. The vanilla’s sourcing process also guarantees a fair, sustainable income to producers, supports agricultural training programs to improve the vanilla’s quality and preserves the forest’s eco-system.

The clary sage heart and the lavandin heart are both sourced in Provence, South of France. The clary sage heart’s sourcing is part of a sustainable supply chain that commits to protecting Provençal and French perfumery plants. Its sourcing also limits the use of chemicals in soil and reduces soil erosion. To obtain the clary sage heart extract, the whole plant, complete with its flowers and stems, is steam-distilled, with the essential oil then extracted and finally fractionated to reveal its unique, refined olfactory quality.

The lavandin heart, meanwhile, is sourced as part of a supply chain that supports sustainable and innovative agricultural practices, to improve harvests and benefit growers. It is extracted by distilling freshly harvested flowers, with the essential oil fractionated to amplify the flowers’ richest, most attractive facets.

BEHIND THE LENS

The Museum of Modern Art

The Museum of Modern Art remains a beacon for the visionaries who helped shape it. Chief among them is Glenn Lowry, MoMA’s outgoing David Rockefeller director, who will retire this year after an extraordinary 30-year tenure. The museum honored him at its recent Party in the Garden. Guests included MoMA President Sarah Arison, Chair Marie-Josée Kravis, Michael Bloomberg, Agnes Gund, Michael Ovitz, and Jimmy Choo’s Tamara Mellon. Marina Abramović, LaToya Ruby Frazier, and Derrick Adams were among the artists in attendance. This year’s benefit was sponsored by Tory Burch, who dressed several attendees, including art patron Sarah Hoover. The benefit was set against exhibitions by Jack Whitten, Otobong Nkanga, and Hilma af Klint. The party unfolded across the museum’s garden and lobby with creative lighting by Bentley Meeker. Lowry took to the mic and said, “I never imagined this journey would last this long or be so rewarding.” moma.org

The Hamptons Fine Art Fair

Christian Siriano & Holiday House

Christian Siriano, who had designed red-carpet looks for A-listers including Jennifer Lopez, Ariana Grande, and Oprah Winfrey, turned his talents to custom furniture. His line, Siriano Interiors, which he described as “dramatic, elegant, and a little unexpected,” was displayed at Holiday House’s Hamptons—the organization’s annual summer showcase in Water Mill. His favorite piece was inspired by the movie Beauty and the Beast, which starred Emma Watson, Stanley Tucci, and Emma Thompson. “I love the Lea Silhouette Wardrobe,” he told me. “The shape reminded me of when I was a kid and loved Beauty and the Beast. It felt like the wardrobe was going to come alive and get you dressed.” Siriano served as co-chair for the event, alongside Campion Platt and Andrea Stark. The showhouse, which featured 15 top designers, will run through August 17th. All proceeds go to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Siriano told me, “Holiday House felt like the perfect fit. It’s where bold design meets a great cause, and that’s totally my world.” holidayhousenyc.com

The Hamptons Fine Art Fair showcased over 120 exhibitors from around the world at the Southampton Fairgrounds. The galleries featured works by Pablo Picasso, Andy Warhol, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, Hunt Slonem, and fine art photographer Adriane Stark, celebrated for her dynamic botanical images and striking architectural compositions, which were on display at Veritas Contemporary. Art industry veteran Rick Friedman, a passionate collector of local artists, helmed the 19th edition of the fair. His personal collection included over 300 pieces, including multiple museum-quality works by Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning. hamptonsfineartfair.com

ROUTE 27

The New York Post and Wall Street Journal recently compared a girls’ weekend in the Hamptons to a trip to Disneyland. As a California girl who grew up worshipping Sleeping Beauty’s castle, a parent who’s planned more than a few Disney trips and a longtime Hamptons summer resident, I understood that comparison instantly.

When I took my family recently, of course we stayed at the Disneyland Hotel, where the characters greet you at check-in. Naturally, we booked the Disney Princess Breakfast Adventure with movie-inspired cuisine, so my kids could mingle and eat breakfast with all of their favorite princesses. Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique makeover? Absolutely. Dinner in the Tiki Room with the singing birds? Of course. It was a splurge, and it was totally worth it to see that sparkle in their eyes.

So when I read about women forking over serious cash for a Hamptons girls’ weekend, I got it immediately. They’re chasing that same kind of magic. Just like I wanted to give my kids the ultimate Disney experience, these women want the ultimate summer they’ve seen plastered across Instagram—sun-kissed, rosé-filled and unforgettable.

But here’s the thing: Unless you have your own place out east, the biggest hit to your wallet is always accommodation. Average nightly rates in the high season are pushing $1,200 for a two- to three-night minimum. But can they all be charging that much? Every time I drive from Westhampton to Montauk, I pass dozens of hotels—from hidden gems to glossy new builds with prices that don’t always match the curb appeal. Some aren’t even on Google Maps.

So, in the spirit of being your insider, I’ve scouted the Route 27 stretch for you and put together a list of hotels from Westhampton to Montauk—from average to fancy—with their approximate nightly rates for both weekends and weekdays. Because if you’re going to live out your Hamptons dreams this summer, you deserve to budget smartly and spend where the magic really counts. Here’s the breakdown of hotels, nearby restaurants, and how many rooms they actually have (because yes, booking the right room in the Hamptons can feel as competitive as snagging a reservation for the Disney Princess Breakfast—which books out months in advance).

Note: Hotel rates shift each weekend—availability and demand drive prices up and down.

What I found is that these rates jump around depending on availability and demand. If you’re planning your Route 27 summer escape, here’s my insider advice: If the plan is to save your dollars on where you sleep and splurge on where you sip, then places like Sea Haven Resort Motel in Southampton or Inn on Main in Westhampton will let you rest your head without emptying your bank account—meaning you’ll have more to spend on lunch at Sant Ambroeus, a designer outfit from Alice + Olivia or Blue and Cream, or a sunset cocktail and lobster salad at Duryea’s. These budget-friendly stays are clean, no-frills, and keep you right on Route 27 with easy access to the scene (summer traffic notwithstanding). But if you’re looking to splurge and soak in the full Hamptons fantasy—the way I do at Disneyland—book a suite at Gurney’s Montauk, reserve a room at The Pridwin overlooking the ocean on Shelter Island, lap up the luxury at The Reform Club, or claim a garden cabana at Sole East Resort for the iconic poolside rosé-allday vibe. You’re not just paying for a room—you’re buying into the summer story your social media will be talking about all season long. Either scenario is a good one because, as the kids say—YOLO!
