one mann’s opinion

In all the years we’ve been doing Mann About Town, Penny and I have never been more excited and honored to feature the iconic Michael McCarty of Michael’s New York and Santa Monica on the cover. Not only is it a tremendous story, but the whole process amid what has been with the tragic California fires. We’ve developed a terrific relationship with Michael that I think will last a long time and I’m sure you’ll find the story very exciting to read and see why Michael’s is a special place.

The rest of the magazine is chalked up full of great photo events and of which I’ve attended most such as the 56th annual National Jewish Health “A Winter’s Evening” gala with Wendy Siegel who was honored with the Humanitarian Award.I love going to the events. In many cases, our magazines are in the gift bags and it makes me very proud of the magazine to see everyone reading them and asking how we get such interesting events. My answer to that is that our staff is of extremely talented people who spend time researching to find the newest things that people might not be aware of. One example is Padel, which we’ve caught on the come up, as we did Pickleball.

Big things have been happening, including Delivering Good going above and beyond, providing a tremendous amount of products to the people of California, and they will be continuing with taking these types of actions in the future.

In closing, as I can go on forever, we’re expanding our event sector of business and we’re excited about the direction we’re taking, as our niche is in lifestyle, apparel and real estate. Let’s all hope that 2025 is a great year. A lot of changes are in the air–which we will be creating some of our own and keeping you updated to what is happening.

“Strength does not come from physical capacity. It comes from an indomitable will.”

EDITOR’S LETTER

Hello everyone and welcome to Mann About Town’s January 2025 issue!

There’s a lot in store for you all. Let’s start with the legendary Michael’s of New York and Santa Monica–our cover feature. Michael’s of New York has recently celebrated 35 years in the business and Santa Monica 45 years. For a restaurant to be around that long, something’s got to be right and Michael McCarty, owner of Michael’s shares how his success transpired and what works.

Health matters. This is nothing new, and the comprehensive concierge medicine program in the Palm Beaches, Mount Sinai New YorkConcierge Care, located at City Place in downtown West Palm Beach is something special. The real care and dedication to patients to really help them is astounding and one to really look into. Then there’s the California fires that has sadly disrupted the lives of so many. Delivering Good, the non-profit that gives back in a multitude of ways by working with retailers, manufacturers and foundations has provided for those in need with many resources such as clothing and furniture. Check out our Window Shopping for health pick-me-ups as well–very worth it if you ask me.

When looking at our photo events, they are not ones to miss like that of the 56th annual National Jewish Health “A Winter’s Evening” gala with Wendy Siegel, co-chair of the National Jewish Health Council of National Trustees, honored with the Humanitarian Award. There was also the Aspen Art Museum which hosted its beloved annual winter celebration, The Slopeside Soirée that brought together over 300 guests to usher in the winter season while supporting the museum’s curatorial and educational programs.

If you need experts in their field, Jason Goldman is a lawyer whose passion and clientele makes you intrigued and inclined to work with him if need be and Peter thomas Roth has the beauty knowledge one needs. Looking for vacation spots? Magma Global is ready to tell all

Let’s not forget restaurants, with Hortus NYC here in New York being of an ambiance that you’d love and some great food too–I’ve been there, I know–and all the Aspen eats you’d want to check out.

There’s a lot to read about and it surely does not disappoint. Have a lovely January!

Consuelo Vanderbilt Costin X Ximena Kavalekas Launches Handbag

Billboard recording artist, and entrepreneur Consuelo Vanderbilt Costin, along with designer Ximena Kavalekas, have teamed up to create a new line of clutches which aim to be “classic, elegant and contemporary,” said Vanderbilt Costin at an exclusive sneak peek held at New York’s exclusive Hotel,

The new collection of clutches, designed by Kavalekas and Vanderbilt Costin, features a gold strap and comes in three colors: black, royal blue and nude.

Consuelo Vanderbilt Costin is a Billboardcharting artist, entrepreneur and philanthropist who has performed alongside Joe Cocker, Mya Tweet and many others. She is also the co-founder of SohoMuse, a networking site for creatives and happens to be the greatgreat-great niece of Consuelo Vanderbilt, the Duchess of Marlborough, and a seventhgeneration descendant of shipping and railroad industrialist Cornelius Vanderbilt. Having grown up in England and studied in Italy, she is a fixture in the fashion world and was recently a judge at the Elysian Impact’s second annual Catwalk Furbaby runway show at New York Fashion Week. Vanderbilt Costin also recently released her own line of jewelry on HSN called The Homage, honoring the five generations of women in her family.

Ximena Kavalekas is an Ecuadorian fashion designer who studied at the famed fashion school, Polimoda, in Florence, Italy, as well as L’Academia Italiana. She represented Italian brands in Miami before launching her handbag

label in 2015. Known for honoring Italian craftsmanship while fusing it with a modern aesthetic, her handbags have been worn by Hollywood celebrities, solidifying the brand’s reputation in the luxury market. In 2020, the brand opened its first flagship store in the Miami Design District.

Notable attendees included: Consuelo Vanderbilt Costin, Ximena Kavalekas, Michaela Seewald (Publisher of Vogue Czech Republic and Slovakia), Suzan Kremer, Pamela Morgan, Montgomery Frazier.

This exciting new collection is described as practical and minimal, with an elegant edge. “I love the day-to-night aspect of the clutch,” said Vanderbilt Costin. “I love the architecture and how much you can fit inside of the clutch, and it feels effortless, no weight. They are classic, elegant and contemporary.”

The structured clutches have a removable strap and a card holder on the inner wall. Inside the clutch, gold lettering reads: “Consuelo Vanderbilt Costin” alongside the Ximena Kavalekas logo. “This collaboration represents sophistication, style and uniqueness,” said Vanderbilt Costin.

Ximena Kavalekas
Consuelo Vanderbilt Costin

Kavalekas and Vanderbilt Costin met at a vibrant event in Miami and discussed the collaboration from there. “Ximena is a renowned designer, and I love her creativity and meticulous sense of style and professionalism,” said Vanderbilt Costin. “A woman can dress this up or dress it down and wear it every day.”

For each customer, there is a “secret gift” in each clutch. “It’s one of my favorite touches—it’s a personal surprise from my family to you,” said Vanderbilt Costin. “As we continue to grow, this tradition of discovery and thoughtful gifting will remain at the heart of what I do. It’s my way of sharing a piece of my story and making each piece you receive feel truly special.”

Describing her inspiration for the collaboration, Kavalekas commented, “I believe Consuelo´s natural elegance inspired me so much; it seems effortless, sophisticated and cool; and of course, she’s a New Yorker that really knows how to play with different elements at the same time. Also, she [Consuelo] is involved in different philanthropic initiatives and in Ximena Kavalekas, we truly believe when helping, giving and supporting our communities, the universe gives back to us in so many good and

different ways.”

The clutch collection between Vanderbilt Costin and Kavalekas is symbolic. “Fashion represents a powerful way to understand and communicate who we are,” said Vanderbilt Costin. “Fashion is important because it serves as a creative outlet for me to experiment with styles, colors and trends to reflect my mood, whether it be performing or attending fashion

OctOber 7, 2023

When October 7, 2023, happened, we were all devastated and shocked that in our beloved Israel, there could be a major glitch in the Israeli army’s lack of security to protect the Israelis living right outside of Gaza. Where were the soldiers to safeguard the border and protect the 1,200 people murdered that day and the 251 taken hostage? Will we ever understand what really happened that morning and why so many people were left vulnerable?

As a photographer and conceptual artist, I am constantly thinking and creating. I was heartsick from this massacre in Israel, and I wanted to produce something to document this tragedy. My creativity ignites under stress. I had seen something on Instagram about the dash in obituaries and that dash became the focus of my thinking. Each dash represented one person killed that day and in the aftermath. I wanted the piece to be the colors of the Israeli flag, so I made the background white and each dash blue. The Jewish star was added to finish this project. I was extremely satisfied with the outcome, now I had to share it with the public.

I am so honored that the following institutions accepted my October 7 memorial piece with appreciation and grace. The institutions are as follows:

THE JEWISH MUSEUM IN NEW YORK

THE JEWISH MUSEUM OF FLORIDA – FLORIDA

INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY (FIU) IN MIAMI BEACH

THE WEITZMAN NATIONAL MUSEUM OF AMERICAN

JEWISH HISTORY IN PHILADELPHIA

THE NEW YORK HISTORICAL SOCIETY IN NEW YORK CITY

PARK AVENUE SYNAGOGUE - NEW YORK CITY

CENTRAL SYNAGOGUE - NEW YORK CITY

UNITED JEWISH APPEAL (UJA) FEDERATION NEW YORK

JEWISH FEDERATION OF PALM BEACH COUNTY

It was such an honor to visit the Weitzman National Museum in Philadelphia because they hung my October 7 piece immediately in the main lobby. While there, I was also able to witness the devastation of the October 7 massacre in a photography exhibit of the Nova Music Festival showing the grotesque brutality that morning. The photos of this mass murder and cruelty were almost impossible to believe.

Thank you for taking the time to read this.

sought-after savoir-faire, including intaglio or gem carving, fancy-cut expertise, green wax casting, openwork structures and more. The challenge lies in thoughtfully selecting and applying the right techniques for each design, ensuring they tell the poetic story of my inspiration or imagination while subtly and ingeniously representing the brand’s codes.” HRH Princess Sirivannavari Nariratana

“Each piece is unique, characterized by intricate details that bear testament to Thailand’s inherited métiers d’art, a heritage of exceptional craftsmanship in jewelry making. It incorporates rare and sought-after savoir-faire, including intaglio or gem carving, fancy-cut expertise, green wax casting, openwork structures, and more. The challenge lies in thoughtfully selecting and applying the right techniques for each design, ensuring they tell the poetic story of my inspiration or imagination while subtly and ingeniously representing the brand’s codes.”

Rajakanya continued with, “The art of transformation and the empowerment of women, which lies at the heart of Sirivannavari’s philosophy, remains paramount. To exceed expectations, this collection also features white diamonds and rare gemstones of exceptional quality, selected according to our exacting standards. Every piece in this collection is crafted to embody eternal love—a legacy to be cherished and passed down from generation to generation.”

The profusion of colored stones and white diamonds reveals radiant brilliance through intricate compositions set within refined structures of precious metal, gracefully embracing the body. Each piece embodies HRH Princess Sirivannavari Nariratana Rajakanya’s vision to create jewelry that can be worn as close to the skin as possible—a feat achieved through the meaningful collaboration with Beauty Gems’ master artisans. Their unparalleled expertise brings these mesmerizing designs to life, employing exceptional and rare techniques, including precise stone selection, lapidary artistry, green wax casting, intricate setting and meticulous polishing of both gemstones and white gold. “Reflecting the ingenuity of our craftsmen—virtuosos who master and refine skills that only a few Maisons can and will perform today— the entire creative process for this High Jewelry collection is imbued with the art of exquisite detail,” said Mr. Suriyon Sriorathaikul, managing director of Beauty Gems, about this collaborative development. “The jewelry savoir-faire is meticulously applied and adapted to fit each design, its purpose, and functionality, bringing to life the story of HRH Princess Sirivannavari’s inspiration. This is achieved through rare lapidary techniques, such as the briolette cut, which maximizes the reflection of diamonds by faceting the entire drop-shaped stone with double rose cuts or dual triangles. Another remarkable feature is the invisible setting, which enhances the brilliance of stones by reworking princess-cut diamonds to fit securely against one another within a metal border or rail, making the jewel’s structure as inconspicuous as possible.” Sriorathaikul added, “Every element is as rare as it is precious, including a batch of Padparadscha sapphires, renowned for their extraordinary and exotic color range—a unique blend of pink and orange. The name itself is borrowed from the ancient Sanskrit word describing the hue of a tropical lotus flower at sunset. Equally exceptional is the sugar-loafshaped tanzanite, with tanzanite being 1,000 times rarer than a diamond, it is considered a ‘one-generation gem.’”

With delicate lines and intricate articulations meticulously designed and precisely calculated, each piece adapts flawlessly to the curves of the neck, wrist, finger, or earlobe. The volumetric perspective captures the finesse and lightness of fabric dimensions, as if draped directly onto the skin. From necklaces to bracelets, rings to earrings, each creation is inspired by couture craftsmanship, amplifying the radiant shimmer of gemstones carefully selected to meet the highest standards of excellence. Like intricate stitches and embroidery patterns, various shapes of precious gems, complemented by diverse setting techniques, perpetuate the harmonious dialogue between jewelry and couture. This collection celebrates Sirivannavari s creative journey as an infinite source of inspiration, from the flora and fauna of Princess’ Garden—particularly local Thai flowers—to the culmination of HRH Princess Sirivannavari Nariratana Rajakanya’s signature designs and brand codes. These include symbolic motifs such as the horseshoe and star, representing luck and hope, the horsebit as an homage to the designer’s passion for

TIRED OF TIRED EYES?

FORGET FILLER.

Starting the new year feeling more exhausted than rested? You’re not alone. According to studies, the demands of the holiday season can lead to stress and sleep deprivation. Telltale signs of tiredness: Dark circles and undereye hollowness. These characteristics are also perceived as signs of aging—as we get older, natural fat loss in the under-eye area can create dark hollows.

With dark circles and under-eye hollowness being concerns for people young and old, it’s no wonder that under-eye filler has become mainstream. In recent years, the in-office procedure has been widely discussed on beauty websites, Reddit and TikTok. However, just as it has increased in popularity, so have the number of consumers and influencers seeking non-invasive alternatives.

On the agenda for 2025: Needle-free skin care solutions. Here to tell us more about this trend is skincare guru Peter Thomas Roth. An influential segment leader in the beauty industry, Roth is known for creating clinically stronger formulas and leads all research and development at his state-ofthe-art lab and manufacturing facility.

The newest innovation to emerge from Roth’s lab is Peptide Skinjection Fill + Fix Under-Eye Cream. Here, he gives us the scoop on his new product and why it’s the perfect at-home treatment for dark circles and under-eye hollowness.

WHAT CAUSES DARK CIRCLES AND UNDER-EYE HOLLOWNESS?

Common causes include genetics, aging, dehydration and lack of sleep. A surgical procedure is one treatment option, and so is filler. However, not everyone wants surgery, and many people are scared of under-eye filler, which is why we’ll be seeing more and more needle-free alternatives this year!

WHY DO YOU THINK PEOPLE ARE SEEKING UNDER-EYE FILLER ALTERNATIVES?

Needles aren’t for everyone, but the benefits of under-eye filler have broad appeal. The advances in cutting-edge ingredient technology have been incredible and the time for a needle-free option has arrived! My new Peptide Skinjection Fill + Fix Under-Eye Cream is part of my popular Peptide Skinjection collection, and I can’t wait for everyone to check it out. Just like my other Peptide Skinjection products, this formula is a fabulous alternative to invasive treatments.

WHAT MAKES PEPTIDE SKINJECTION FILL +

EYE CREAM UNIQUE?

FIX UNDER-

As any plastic surgeon or dermatologist will tell you, fixing under-eye hollowness and adding the look of volume is very hard to correct without filler or surgery. That’s why I am so excited about my new Peptide Skinjection Fill + Fix Under-Eye Cream! In a clinically measured study, my formula was proven to improve the look of under-eye volume and fine lines. Of course, some people will always need or want filler, but my eye cream is an amazing counterpart and can help enhance results. For those who want a needle-free option, my eye cream provides a scientifically advanced, non-invasive alternative… Brilliant!

Unlocking the Power of Red Light Therapy

If you are anywhere near social media, then you’ve seen the steady interest in red light therapy. People are showing off their futuristic (and somewhat creepy) red light therapy masks to treat skin conditions such as dark sports, fine lines, wrinkles, redness and other signs of aging. This beauty tool is dermatologist recommended and a great place to start, but you know me, I like to supercharge my health. After a deep dive into red light therapy for the entire body, I decided this needed to be part of my weekly health regimen.

I have found red light therapy to be a great tool to combat aging as well as general aches and fatigue. Red light therapy is deep tissue therapy that works by targeting the skin cells—stimulating the mitochondria, the cell’s “powerhouse.” This boosts the cellular energy production, allowing cells and the musculoskeletal system to rejuvenate and repair themselves. In many cases, this therapy

is an alternative for a variety of health issues. It can help reduce inflammation and improve circulation. It can help with pain, whether muscle, joint or arthritis. Additionally, it can promote weight loss, lower blood pressure and help with vitamin D deficiency. Recently, I’ve learned that Americans spend 86-ish percent of their time indoors. Lack of sunlight can lead to bone pain, weakness and mood swings. Amazingly, laying down for 10 to 15 minutes in a red light therapy bed can make up that deficiency.

Enter Scandilabs and owner Alexandra Cochrane, who lives and breathes red light therapy and is based in Vero Beach. She is the concierge in red light therapy. As an authorized dealer for the red light therapy beds by manufacturer Red Light Wellness—they’ve been in business for more than 40 years and make the beds in the U.S.—Cochrane oversees local and international projects, making sure

properties (residences, medical clinics and hotels) meet the space and electrical requirements for the beds, along with training teams on how to use it and more. Cochrane’s personal story is an important reason why I have stuck to red light therapy. In her twenties, Cochrane, who is Swedish, was a flight attendant. The lifestyle, from commuting to parties, was constant, and she energized herself with a diet of Red Bull, sugar and coffee. Ultimately, she became lethargic, anxious, and depressed, and was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease. “The doctor said I would be sick for the rest of my life and needed medicine for life too. That’s where my journey started, and I went to find different solutions,” explained Cochrane, who became a certified health coach and biohacking expert. “I started using red light therapy three or four times a week, and it was revolutionary for me.”

I had experienced red light therapy beds before I met Cochrane, but there’s a reason

why Cochrane reps this distributor. A while ago, I was at Tringali Vibrant Health in Palm Beach Gardens, when owner Elizabeth Tringali introduced me to Cochrane, who was overseeing the installation of the Max Miracle 9600. I booked several sessions with the 9600 and immediately felt the difference. This bed is a head-to-toe treatment, with no hot spots, even with its 3,200 powerful LEDs and total 9,600 watts for total power. So how do I feel after a red-light therapy session? First, I feel a deeper sense of well-being, which is immediate and an important part of my health philosophy. I feel a boost in my energy, I feel more alert and I sleep deeper. I’ve also experienced long-term physical benefits too, seeing a difference in my joints (less inflamed) and muscles (they recover from workouts much quicker), and my skin is radiating. Scars that I had acquired over my life have diminished. My skin is toner and my complexion is clearer.

I recognize red light therapy is a commitment, which is why I go several times a week. These results I shared have been gained after several months of treatments, but if you can swing the experience, I think it’s a must. Seek out Cochrane through her website scandilabs.io or by phone at 772.588.4798.

Museum of Jewish Heritage Presents Judy Glickman Lauder: The Danish Exception

The Museum of Jewish Heritage–A Living Memorial to the Holocaust has updated the exhibition, Judy Glickman Lauder: The Danish Exception, with additional photographs from the celebrated photographer to complement the Museum’s exhibition Courage to Act: Rescue in Denmark. Made in 1993, the black and white photographs on view feature striking portraits of both rescuers and survivors, shadowy interiors where Jewish people and cultural heritage found refuge, and the sites of departure for those who escaped to Sweden. The photographs are accompanied by text excerpts from Glickman Lauder’s interviews and firsthand research.

The display is presented on the third floor of the Museum, adjacent to Courage to Act: Rescue in Denmark, which tells the story of the remarkable efforts by Danish citizens to successfully save 95% of their Jewish population. 81 years ago, Jewish and non-Jewish neighbors of all ages mobilized to create one of the most effective—and exceptional— examples of mass resistance and escape in modern history.

Almost 50 years after World War II, Glickman Lauder visited Denmark

and, using her fine photographic eye, captured and immortalized those who made the historic rescue possible as well as the historic sites. The Danish Exception offers a poetic affirmation of resistance, survival and triumph, highlighting the extraordinary bravery and selflessness of those involved in the Danish Rescue. Now 81 years since the rescue, this presentation activates anew the Keeping History Center Hallway, with views onto New York Harbor and the Statue of Liberty.

“I had the opportunity to meet, interview and photograph Danish Resistance leaders, rescuers and Jewish survivors. These extraordinary people shared their individual experiences and led me to the sites where the events of 1943 had unfolded,” said Judy Glickman Lauder. “The Danish people came to symbolize hope for me—a force of goodness in a world gone mad.”

Photo presentation complements Museum’s Courage to Act: Rescue in Denmark exhibition about one of the most effective examples of mass resistance in modern history

16 selections from Glickman Lauder’s larger body of work elaborate upon stories on display in the adjacent exhibition, which is made for audiences as young as nine. For example, young Leo Goldberger was forced to flee Copenhagen with his family in 1943; in Courage to Act, his experience is recounted through his decision to take along a prized possession—a clay sculpture—on the frightening escape by sea. Photographed by Glickman Lauder fifty years later, Leo Goldberger, who became a prominent psychologist, is captured in middle age and reflects eloquently on his family’s rescue.

“Judy Glickman Lauder’s photography offers a profound glimpse into the Danish Rescue. Through portraits of survivors and rescuers, and images of hidden spaces, she captures the intimate drama of survival, the long lives lived after the war and the understated heroism of ordinary Danes who chose to make a difference. Presentations like The Danish Exception not only honor these courageous acts, but remind us of the power of compassion and collective action, even in the face of overwhelming darkness,” said Jack Kliger, president and chief executive officer of the Museum of Jewish Heritage–A Living Memorial to the Holocaust. “As Judy says in her book, ‘Although the Danish story is small in regard to numbers—affecting a tiny fraction of those persecuted by the Nazis—it is huge in scope. It is a story that tells of a population who proved it possible to make a difference, and who refused to see a minority as ‘the other’.”

Sara Softness, director of curatorial affairs, added, “Judy Glickman Lauder’s photographs make for a beautiful and impactful partner to Courage to Act: Rescue in Denmark. In quiet black and white images, Glickman Lauder’s documentary project is powerful and poetic, and brings this extraordinary story into real life focus.”

Judy Glickman Lauder is an internationally recognized photographer, humanitarian and philanthropist. Her photographs related to the Holocaust were published in the monograph

Beyond the Shadows: The Holocaust and the Danish Exception (Aperture, 2018). These photographs are the subject of two traveling exhibitions—Holocaust: The Presence of the Past and Resistance, and Rescue: Denmark’s Response to the Holocaust—which have been presented at more than 200 institutions around the world. Other works by the artist are collected in Upon Reflection: Photographs by Judy Ellis Glickman (2012) and Both Sides of the Camera: Photographs from the Collection of Judith Ellis Glickman (2007). Her most recent book titled Presence: The Photography Collection of Judy Glickman Lauder (2022) was published by Aperture in partnership with the Portland Museum of Art, Maine. This book accompanies a traveling exhibition drawn from the Judy Glickman Lauder Collection at the Portland Museum of Art, to which her collection has been gifted.

The German occupation of Denmark began in April 1940. Unlike in other countries, the Danish government was allowed to continue to control its domestic affairs. For the next three years, Danish Jews were not required to register their property, identify themselves based on their religion, or give up their homes and businesses. The Jewish community continued to function and hold religious services.

Then, in August 1943, the German military commander in Denmark declared martial law and took control over the Danish military and police forces. The German civilian administrator soon initiated a proposal to capture and deport Danish Jews. Some German officials warned non-Jewish Danes, who in turn alerted the Jewish community.

Danish authorities, Jewish community leaders and countless private citizens mobilized a massive operation in response. The Danish resistance—assisted by its citizens—organized a rescue operation that helped hide Jews and move them to the coast, where fishermen ferried them to neutral Sweden. In just a few weeks, about 7,200 Jews and 700 of their non-Jewish relatives traveled to safety in Sweden. In all, Danes rescued more than 90% of the country’s Jewish residents from German deportation, brutal internment and starvation, and systemic murder.

Mount Sinai Delivers Concierge Care with a Difference in The Palm Beaches

A doctor who knows you well, has the time to talk things through and is available to help when you are in need. This kind of strong physician-patient relationship is important to good health—but is all too rare in today’s medicine.

The Mount Sinai Health System is answering the call for personalized care with many initiatives; the latest is a comprehensive concierge medicine program in the Palm Beaches, Mount Sinai New York-Concierge Care, located at City Place in downtown West Palm Beach. Following Mount Sinai’s highly regarded concierge medicine program in Hudson Yards, New York City, Mount Sinai New York-Concierge Care provides personalized, patient-centered health care, including unlimited and seamless access to leading specialists, a tailored preventive health and wellness program, travel medicine consultations, nutrition counseling and treatment planning, coordination and health management, and seamless urgent and afterhours care through Sollis Health.

“Our program is very focused on our mission, which is to keep people healthy and provide exemplary patient-centered care at the highest level,” said Joshua Kugler, MD, medical director of Mount Sinai New York-Concierge Care.

“We have pioneers in many fields of medicine, both locally and internationally, so we can offer access to a very deep group of specialists at any time of the day or night.”

While the concierge medicine concept is not new, concierge programs differ widely in quality, cost and services provided. A basic model might offer primary care, often with no, or limited access to specialists for a monthly or annual fee. In contrast, Mount Sinai New York-Concierge Care offers a wide range of

services, as well as access to the full resources of the renowned Mount Sinai Health System. This includes utilization of the Hudson Yards concierge practice in New York for members who travel back and forth throughout the year, and urgent care at any of the Sollis Health locations throughout the country. Services are coordinated, navigation is easier and faster than in many traditional models, and there is a strong emphasis on prevention.

Concierge medicine patients have immediate access to Mount Sinai Health System specialists locally and in New York, where The Mount Sinai Hospital is nationally ranked by U.S. News & World Report in 11 specialties, including cardiology, geriatrics, neurology/neurosurgery and orthopedics.

“Our goal, of course, is to keep all of our patients out of the hospital while we provide them customized, comprehensive care,” said Dr. Kugler.

Wellness, Longevity, Specialty Care

South Florida traditionally has been viewed as home to an aging population of retirees, Dr. Kugler noted. But Palm Beach, like much of the rest of the world, has changed since the Covid-19 pandemic. “Today, older adults who used to be “snowbirds” are now spending more and more time here, and we are seeing a growing younger demographic as well,” he said. “What is common to both is an increasing interest in a healthy lifestyle and longevity. So, we’ve embedded services to support wellness as part of our concierge care program, including cardiology assessments, nutrition counseling,

annual skin exams— critically important given sun exposure here—and even spa services with an aesthetician.” Mount Sinai New York doctors have been delivering high-quality care in Palm Beach for many years and are well known and respected in the community, Dr. Kugler said. The new concierge care program extends and expands its services, accessibility and patientcentered care resources, including patient navigators to help coordinate care. “When a patient gets sick after hours in the traditional medical world, they often end up in urgent care or an emergency room, where they are met by somebody they don’t know, who is not familiar

with their care and has to start from scratch to try to understand what is going on and how medications and everything else play into the presenting issue. This can come at a high cost to the patient and to the health care system, with unnecessary repeat testing and time spent regathering basic information such as family and personal medical histories,” Dr. Kugler explained.

“On the other hand, the concierge physician does not need to repeat tests or ask questions they already know the answers to, because they know the patient. In addition, it’s easier for the concierge physician, to rapidly refer to, or consult with a top-notch specialist if needed.”

Photos courtesy of Mount Sinai Health System

A survey by “Concierge Medicine Today” reported the top reasons patients leave their current physician in search of a concierge medicine physician. High on the list are long wait times, feeling like a number and a physician spending less than 15 minutes per visit.

Concierge physician Raiza Lopez, MD, an internist who focuses on preventive care, screenings, and disease management and treatment, said these concerns don’t exist in Mount Sinai’s concierge care system. “My goal as a primary care physician is to be a partner with my patients in their health journey. I want to have the time to not only treat them when they are sick, but also to offer preventive medicine so they stay healthy and to help them achieve their wellness goals.”

“I love the concierge practice, because when patients come in, they don’t wait,” Dr. Lopez added. “They’re greeted at the front desk and quickly taken to the room where their visit with me happens, and very often their treatment as well.”

In most traditional medical settings, a primary care physician has 15 or 20 minutes, at most, per patient visit. “That time is used not only for the doctor, but also for the medical assistant to do an initial intake, check vital signs and verify medications, allergies and other conditions,” Dr. Lopez said. “In the remaining time, the primary care physician has to listen to the patient’s concerns, address why they are there, and review lab results and other follow-ups from the previous visit to see how they’re doing after the

treatment they were given. Then at the end, the doctor has to come up with a plan specifically tailored for that patient to move forward. Even someone who is not a physician realizes that 15 minutes is hardly enough time to do all that well.”

“With concierge care we have ample time,” she continued. “Some of our appointments are 30 minutes to an hour—that’s double and sometimes four times the time that a traditional primary care physician is spending.” In addition to addressing medical issues during a concierge care visit, Dr. Lopez can talk with the patient about lifestyle issues such as what they are eating, how much exercise they’re getting, and when and where they’re going on vacation. “All that is important,” she said. “It’s not just about disease and medications—it’s about the patient as a human being.”

“The convenience of having testing services onsite can’t be overestimated, for both patients and doctors,” Dr. Kugler said. Mount Sinai New York-Concierge Care provides onsite imaging (ultrasound) and laboratory services, saving time and money, and with faster access to results. “Concierge care’s time has come,” he said. “The benefits are real for patients and for the health care system, as well as for the physicians and specialists who are committed to making a real difference in their patients’ lives.”

Michael’s

NEW YORK

Your Every Day for all Occasions

Photos courtesy of Darren Friedman

Michael’s—the restaurant that takes pride in delivering great food, great drinks and great service. Michael McCarty, the founder and proprietor of Michael’s, has immense experience in knowing what works to keep a restaurant successful, with Michael’s of Santa Monica celebrating 45 years in business and Michael’s of New York celebrating 35 years in business. McCarty’s ability to know a customer’s wants and needs while not spreading himself and the restaurant thin has been remarkable. His journey of discovery and plan of action has led to Michael’s being what it is today—a sought out establishment with delicious food.

At Michael’s, you can find it all: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Desserts, Happy Hour, Cocktails and Drinks, and most importantly, a feel-good enjoyable time. There’s a reason why those who go there build life long relationships, from eating there regularly, to having birthdays, weddings and all types of events catered. At Michael’s, you can find Blueberry Pancakes, Brioche French Toast, a cobb or Niçoise salad, Korean BBQ Steak Lettuce Wrap, Dry Aged NY Strip Steak, a variety of wine— do you prefer Italian or French, maybe even Malibu?— and numerous other options. You might as well look at the menu now. And when discussing the items on the menu, McCarty stated,“ We never do fancy, we do solid, simple, beautiful looking. We let the ingredients speak for themselves and the way we combine them. Everything we do is perfectly ripened, ready to be served.” He continued with,”They’re all on the menu because they’re equally as good. I’m not going to tell somebody who feels like they want fish to eat the steak, or those who want the steak to eat the fish. Trust me when you can’t go wrong. And if that strikes a chord, you should order that. And by the way, come back next week and order the other one.” McCarty does not want a customer to come once a year, designing the menu 45 years ago so that it wasn’t formal, fancy or pedantic. It was—and still is to have food brought out, people to have a good time and taste a wide variety of sorts.

Now, McCarty’s interest for the restaurant/ hospitality business began in September of 1969. McCarty grew up in Briarcliff Manor, witnessing his parents and their friends entertaining each other with parties of all types. He said “They threw wild parties of all sizes and shapes—from black tie, all the way down to casual barbecues, parties at the beach, parties in the forest, parties in the mountains. They [his parents] just had a great group of friends, and they embodied this sort of joie de vivre.” So, rolling around to 1969, that was the time when McCarty was going off to spend his junior year

of high school in Rennes, Brittany, in France. Right before his trip, his parents took him to Laurent—a classic French restaurant in NYC. It had beautiful decor with the sorts of likes of Maxine’s in Paris. There, McCarty had the epiphany that his experience at Laurent was like the parties his parents and their friends had. McCarty’s epiphany continued when he saw his father and mother’s best friend fighting over the check, having stated, “This is like throwing one of my parents’ parties except for at the end of the night, you give everybody a check. In the middle of the meal, in walks the owner— Laurent himself. You could feel the energy in the room go through the roof. It’s like you took a dimmer and just flashed it up to full power; he was working the floor, everybody’s talking and everybody’s laughing, having a great time.”

After dinner at Laurant’s, it was time to take an 11-day student boat ride to France. From what McCarty had known growing up—food was food; simple and good. He stated “ Food and cooking wasn’t the intellectual insanity that it is today. It was just a matter of course. You always had good food and it was always extremely simple. In other words, nobody spent a lot of time futzing around on the plates. It was just, they bought good, great ingredients.” His experience had transformed on the boat, having met the Dolce Vita, as the Italian chefs of the boat met him and all those on it, with a five meals a day: breakfast, lunch, dinner, snack in the morning, snack in the afternoon. McCarty said, “Even though we were students, they [the chefs] still adhered to. And that was something which I really learned from them. I said ‘you know, they didn’t care if we were rich adults on some cruise line. These are a bunch of scraggly kids with backpacks and no money.’”

A year had passed and McCarty had learned that France had a hotel and restaurant school— the Ecole Hôtelière de Paris—, that there was another route in life to learning, other than getting a degree, as there was a bigger selection of trades. With the knowledge of the Ecole Hôtelière de Paris, McCarty’s interest for the restaurateur life had developed. He went back to the U.S., getting his high school diploma but returned to France to enroll in a three year program at the Cordon Bleu. He also attended the Ecole Hôtelière de Paris, a school for French students—all the while he became fluent in French when staying with a family in Brittany— and Académie du Vin, a wine academy.

Based on McCarty’s experiences, during the time he was learning about the restaurateur life, all the restaurants were the same—the same menu based on the Escoffier cookbooks and recipes, being that whether you were in Berlin. Rome, London, Paris, Chicago, Boston, New York, you would find the same style of cooking. McCarty said, “ If you were the best restaurant in the city, you were a classical French restaurant. It was like the Olympics, everybody ran the same race. It was who could do it better, but there was no inventiveness. There was no fusion. Your goal was to perfect it.”

McCarty wanted to be different. He moved to California in 1975 and that’s when he told himself, “Ok, what’s happening here?” He proceeded to call up the food critic for the LA times, and asked her who knew the most about food and the most about wine. The woman gave him the name of Jean Bertranou from L’Ermitage, the best French restaurant in the city. At the time, Bertranou was the only one who had begun to move away from Escoffier and at the same time, not 100% embrace Nouvelle Cuisine, which to McCarty, started to become ridiculous, having stated, “You know, a 16-inch plate with one scallop on it and a leaf of chervil.”

With continued research, McCarty was strengthening his knowledge on how to make a California restaurant successful. About starting his business, McCarty said, “California was phenomenal. The climate is excellent. and with Jean, I began to study the local ingredients,

what grows here, how often it grows here, what the different seasons are.” After learning much about California, McCarty then decided on how he wanted his restaurant to be. He said, “ I want to make a new American restaurant. I don’t want to have waiters in tuxedos. I don’t want the design to look like Maxine’s. My wife’s a painter and we had a lot of friends in the art business and the art gallery business— we want it to look like that. We wanted the music to not be classical, but contemporary jazz, and to be outdoors.”

Michael’s has a long proven success story, having flourished how it has after so many years. McCarty said, “The key to my restaurant, when we opened [Michael’s of Santa Monica] in 1979, was that it was virtually 60% outdoors in a beautiful lush garden and very few restaurants had that in LA.” He also said that word of mouth has always been the success of his restaurant. “Publicity is great—and now with all this social media, but the number one reason why we’re still 35 years in New York and 45 years here [in Santa Monica], is because we have a consistent package, the whole thing.” McCarty also attributes timing and location to his success, as he truly was in the right place at the right time, including going with his gut— waiting 10 years to open up his New York restaurant, because he knew the spot he wanted was going to be available, he just had to wait his turn. 35 years and still succeeding proved him right.

When discussing decor for Michael’s in New York, McCarty said, “We have almost a timeless look—like an art gallery, and that look has never changed and most likely will never change. The garden room there has like a pavilion, and it goes out and overlooks a fabulous garden with the light coming in, so it’s like California in New York. We didn’t go the route that all these fancy restaurants have done where they spent $20

million in the basement of a $3 billion dollar building. That’s all great; that’s just not us.”

For Santa Monica, McCarty said, “We had a distinct style 45 years ago. Fancy flowers, great silverware, china from France, beautiful garden, lots of art on the walls, indoor, outdoor. We evolved with the time back in 2016, from a white tablecloth restaurant to a more casual, still elegant, still professional look. I was also able to open up the entire restaurant. We have a history, rotating our art consistently. We have beautiful private rooms upstairs. My wife always curates shows. She knows how difficult it is to get a gallery. Whether it was famous artists like Ed Ruscha and his best friend, Joe Goode or it was John Baldessari, or it was Lori Precious, which is up right now, or it was John Baldessari’s eight assistants, it was always a combination of the local artists that we knew here. One of the reasons why people go to the restaurant is because they’re always looking to see what our art is.” The clientele at Michael’s includes many notable individuals such as Martha Stewart, Bette Midler, all the art gallerists and more.

When discussing adapting to current times and what is being done to keep business going, McCarty said, “ We’re always on the lookout for great stuff. With the weird climate stuff going on, so many things are different that you’re constantly sourcing—new ingredients, new farmers are coming to us with stuff, new fishermen bring stuff. However, McCarty stated, “ We’re very conscious, but at the end of the day, the number one thing is hospitality. It’s taking care of people. People want to be taken care of.” One of the many ways to make that happen is by looking at the overall setting, every member on the team. McCarty added, “I always say this, it’s like when they used to publish a big picture and say, ‘What’s wrong with this picture?’ And you’d have to go in there and figure out what was wrong. That’s the one thing I teach my managers—attention to detail. They look at the dining room and go, okay, what’s wrong with the dining room right now? It’s the observing eye on the eight ball.”

Additionally to how he operates, McCarty said,“Make sure the whole thing is like you’re the conductor, the director of the movie, the conductor of the symphony, the director of the Broadway play. You’re open for business every night. It’s always a party, but it’s a show and you want your clients to give you a standing ovation when they walk back out the door.”

Providing above board hospitality.—that’s how passionate McCarty is about what he offers— the Michael’s way.

James Verbicky: A Symphony of Canvases, Turntables and a Louvre-Worthy Legacy

Some artists come at you with quiet confidence, their work whispered into the world like a gentle breeze. James Verbicky is not one of those artists. His canvases hit you like a wall of sound—layered, pulsating and electric. A maestro of mixed media, Verbicky doesn’t just paint; he conducts. Each piece is a symphony, meticulously composed of vintage advertisements, bold typography and vivid color bursts that seem to hum with their own frequency.

And yet, for all his accolades, including that gilded stamp of artistic approval—a showcase in the Louvre—you’d never guess his roots began in the dark, sweaty corners of DJ booths. Yes, James Verbicky, the man whose work hangs alongside the greats, once spun vinyl under dim lights, orchestrating the rise and fall of a thousand nights with the flick of a wrist and a perfectly timed bass drop.

From Turntables to Timelessness Born in Edmonton, Alberta, Verbicky’s early life was steeped in music and rebellion. As a DJ, he mastered the art of reading a room, transforming energy into rhythm, and rhythm into pure euphoria. The dexterity of a DJ—the ability to layer, remix and transform—is alive and well in his visual work. His iconic “Media Paintings” take the same approach to the visual world as a DJ would to sound: deconstructing and reconstructing until something entirely new emerges.

But make no mistake, Verbicky’s art is no party trick. His pieces possess the kind of depth that makes you lean in closer, peeling back layers of meaning with each glance. His time as a DJ gave him more than a love for beats—it gave him a visceral understanding of tempo, flow and the symbiotic relationship between artist and audience.

The Louvre & Beyond

In 2008, Verbicky’s work was selected for a juried exhibition at the Louvre—a moment most artists spend lifetimes chasing. For him, it was both a culmination and a beginning. The pieces showcased

there didn’t just belong in the hallowed halls; they commanded the space. Critics marveled at how he could transform the ephemeral—vintage ads, old magazines, fragments of memory—into something eternal.

That same ethos of transformation is evident in everything Verbicky touches. His Media Paintings are physical manifestations of the digital age, blending nostalgia with innovation in a way that feels both reverent and subversive. He’s a man who can take the discarded and make it sacred, who can see chaos and turn it into harmony.

A Future Showcase: Art Meets Music

Now, imagine this: Verbicky, in all his larger-thanlife glory, curates a showcase that merges his two great loves—art and music. Picture his bold, tactile canvases lit up in sync with a live DJ set, each beat synchronized with the layers of his paintings. It wouldn’t just be an exhibition; it would be an experience—a visceral, immersive explosion of sound and color that hits you right in the chest. This isn’t just a pipe dream. Rumors are swirling that Verbicky is exploring ways to bring his musical past into dialogue with his artistic present. A showcase of this magnitude would be more than an homage to his roots; it would be a declaration that art, like music, is meant to be felt, not just observed.

The Pulse of a Visionary Verbicky is not the kind of artist who rests on laurels or caters to convention. He’s a disruptor, a DJturned-Louvre-luminary who refuses to be boxed in. His work reminds us that art is not static; it’s alive, breathing and evolving. It’s as much about the act of creation as it is about the audience’s reaction—a give-and-take, like a perfectly timed beat drop in a crowded club.

So, keep your ears open and your eyes peeled. Whether you find him behind a canvas or a pair of turntables, one thing is certain: James Verbicky is a force. He doesn’t just create; he conducts, remixes and transforms. And if the whispers of an art-andmusic showcase come to fruition, prepare yourself for an experience that’s equal parts symphony and sonic boom.

Because that’s the thing about James Verbicky—he’s not just an artist. He’s a movement, a melody, a masterpiece in the making.

SCHNIPPER’S QUALITY SOUPS OPENS ON THE UPPER EAST SIDE

Founders of Hale and Hearty Return to the Soup Scene with New Concept

Andrew and Jonathan Schnipper, founders of the iconic Hale and Hearty Soups, Schnipper’s and Hamburger America, are thrilled to announce the opening of Schnipper’s Quality Soups on the Upper East Side. The new venture marks a nostalgic return to the very location where Hale and Hearty first introduced its beloved soups over 30 years ago—at 849 Lexington Avenue (64th and Lexington Ave.) Schnipper’s Quality Soups is officially open, having opened in the beginning of January.

Schnipper’s Quality Soups will offer a wide variety of unique and exciting soups, capturing the quality and creativity that customers have come to love from brothers Andrew and Jonathan Schnipper. With a focus on fresh, seasonal ingredients, the menu offers a range of comforting soups that blend culinary tradition with today’s flavors and trends. Led by Chef Jonathan Schnipper, the restaurant will introduce exciting new varieties while improving upon classic recipes. Alongside its daily soups, Schnipper’s Quality Soups will feature rotating specials, soups, sandwiches, salads and juices.

“We’re beyond excited to return to the soup business,” said Andrew Schnipper. “Coming back to the location where we started our careers is special, not only for us, but also Schnipper’s fans who continue to reach out to us since we announced our soup opening. We can’t wait to share our updated versions of the beloved soups New Yorkers crave.”

For over 30 years, Andrew and Jonathan Schnipper have been serving quality, delicious food to New Yorkers looking for a quick bite. As the original founders of Hale and Hearty Soups, they ran the family-owned business from 1990 to 2006. During a brief hiatus from the NYC food scene, the brothers spent time traveling around the country and testing local favorites. The duo launched their next venture, Schnipper’s, in 2009, with two Midtown locations. Schnipper’s has become known for its

juicy burgers, gluten free (by accident) chicken fingers, flavorful sandwiches, salads and sloppy joes. They recently joined forces with renowned hamburger historian George Motz, to open Hamburger America in SoHo, bringing their shared passion for burgers to life.

Hortus Unveils a Fresh Take on Dining with a New Korean-Casual Concept

Hortus transitions from its formal fine-dining roots to a more relaxed, Korean-inspired menu with a casual dining approach. The new menu, crafted by Co-owner and General Manager Suhum Jang (formerly of Per Se, Daniel and Jung Sik) and Consulting Executive Chef Youjin Jung (formerly of Del Posto, Babbo and Boulud Sud)—both Culinary Institute of America graduates—reinvents Asian cuisine. Guests can expect a bold, fresh take on Asian flavors served in a refined yet welcoming atmosphere that perfectly complements the innovative dishes.

Hortus, meaning “garden” in Latin, reflects the emphasis on freshness, and the garden’s theme runs throughout the interior. The contemporary design balances style and comfort across four distinct areas. The first floor features a vibrant bar dining space, complete with an open kitchen and a Chef’s Table, perfect for intimate group dining and special tasting experiences. Upstairs, the main dining room offers a sophisticated ambiance with hunter green walls, unique lighting fixtures, plush silver-blue chairs and cozy round banquettes, creating an inviting setting for sharing food and conversation. The lounge area features live jazz performances, while just beyond, a glass-enclosed atrium dining room offers year-round comfort with air conditioning for summer, and heating for the winter months. This versatile space is ideal for large groups and private events.

Small plates take originality to the next level. Created for sharing or sampling, these items include: Tempura Trio, consisting of lightly panfried calamari, softshell crab and cod croquette; Salmon Crudo, with umeboshi “Japanese plums” crème fraiche, pickled mushroom, yuzu kohso vinaigrette—a paste made from chili peppers, yuzu peel and salt—which is then allowed to ferment a complex combination of layering flavors and spices), Korean N’duja—fusilli pasta with Korean smoked pork sausage, smoked paprika, grano padano cheese and gochujang butter that has a bold crimson color and is deeply rich in flavor and Wagyu Gui—an A5 wagyu beef seared tableside served with a mixed combination of hot chili oils and fried crispy onions. Guests are instructed to roll the Wagyu like a cigar and pop the buttery soft meat that melts in their mouth.

Larger plates are generous and meant to be shared: Steak Frites, galbi marinated and served with smashed peewee potatoes and a side of shiso butter; Fresh Cod, poached and cold smoked, served with potato, fried leek and a yuzu ikura velouté; Sauteed Duck Breast with sweet potato

puree served alongside an arugula and fennel salad and Abalone Sotbap with abalones from Wando-Korea served with soy butter and Korean radish.

For those seeking a curated dining experience, the Three-Course Prix Fixe Menu offers the perfect solution. Priced at $63, guests can choose their first two courses from the small plate selections, followed by any main dish for their third course.

To enhance the meal, wine pairing options are available with each course for an additional $37.

Suhum Jang curated Hortus’ specially selected wine list, which includes bottles of fine sparkling wines and champagne, and red and white wines from France, Italy, New Zealand and the United States. Also on the menu are Japanese and Taiwanese craft beers, seasonally rotating bottled beer selections, premium soju and an extensive sake list.

Hortus offers several Sotbob options for lunch, translating to “Korean rice pot” for takeout or dine-in. The rice’s distinct taste and texture come from the pot, which distributes heat evenly, allowing the rice to cook perfectly. 12 premium selections are available, including Uni and Ikura, Wagyu, Charred Eel, Spicy Pork and Eggplant. Complementing the protein are four banchans, curated to rotate seasonally, which include kimchi, shishito peppers, soft tofu with Bordeaux and a refreshing house salad.

Indulge in the ultimate dessert experience with Hortus’ exquisite offerings: the Matcha Tiramisu, paired with creamy vanilla ice cream, the warm and comforting Mango Bread Pudding with golden raisins and the refreshing Yuzu Panna Cotta topped with raspberries and a buttery crumble.

JEWISH NATIONAL FUND - USA builds a strong, vibrant future for the land and people of Israel through bold initiatives and Zionist education.

Attorney Jason Goldman

The Lifeline of Criminal Defense

Practically overnight, Jason Goldman has become one of the most indemand defense attorneys in NYC. How did it happen so fast for the 34-year-old, who now has his own practice, The Law Offices of Jason Goldman, located on the 35th floor at 275 Madison Avenue? He’s currently appealing the guilty verdict of Hannah Guttierrez-Reed, the armorer, convicted in the Alec Baldwin Rust movie shooting.

Jewish Charitable Interests

Jason’s philanthropic endeavors include many Jewish charities, including FDIF (Friends of the Israel Defense Forces) and Friends of HaGal Sheli, which was established to support the Israeli nonprofit HaGal Sheli. This past summer, he worked with the organization to plan a fundraiser at the Montauk hotspot, Surf Lodge.

In his professional life, he also feels compelled to help his community, and one such prominent case was in 2020 during the pandemic. Jason represented a very wellrespected Brooklyn rabbi in this case, who received media attention because he was arrested and detained for hours on end. He was accused of endangering the welfare of a child after cops stumbled upon three of his unaccompanied children on their way to a nearby bodega. Goldman found the case ‘“concerning and disturbing,” pointing out how it was a waste of resources that should have been directed toward the pandemic. The case resulted in the Brooklyn prosecutors declining to prosecute the case, and Jason’s client being released. Goldman has also handled many other notable figures in the Orthodox community, including representing several rabbis from Borough Park on cases involving everything from assault to federal fraud crimes.

The Hustle Behind Goldman

Jason Goldman was lured into the world of criminal defense when he began skipping class at Cardozo Law School to go down to Centre Street—where we were recently having coffee to watch the likes of attorney Gerald Shargel and others conduct trials. Goldman said that he became enthralled with the criminal underworld and the fascination of convincing “12 strangers” to believe his narrative as opposed to the government’s. Upon graduating, Jason was recruited to become a Brooklyn prosecutor at an office known for breeding scrappy trial lawyers. There, he hustled, going desk to desk “in search of the biggest casefile that nobody wanted,” and taking it to trial, honing his fundamentals and building his courtroom reputation.

A Practice on Passion

After a few years, Goldman jumped from the District Attorney (DA)’s office to work for criminal defense lawyer Jeffrey Lichtman, and ultimately opened his own shop. Swiftly, Goldman has become the go-to defense lawyer for CEOs, society figures and those in the tabloids for all the wrong reasons. He built his name by taking on clients “from all walks of life and doing right by them.” Given his trajectory, it’s clear he did right by them. The attorney likes to say he represents “all

collars.” A single day can include defending an accused murderer and a C-suite executive charged with bank fraud. Goldman says trial lawyering, regardless of the charges, is about “telling a persuasive, emotional and compelling story about an individual.”

New York Ranger Sean Avery

After representing former New York Ranger Sean Avery, his first breakthrough case came in the matter of Jordan Williams, a person catapulted into the national limelight following a subway homicide. Referred by an old client, Goldman aggressively took over the case, keeping the media on his side while working to secure a complete dismissal of all charges in a matter of weeks. Asked about his career-making case, Goldman said that he considers “the first time someone needed me” to be his first big case, but concedes that Williams’ matter “touched upon a bigger conversation around race, homelessnes and politics in the city—I gravitate toward cases which have a bigger meaning for society outside the four corners of an indictment.” Regarding courtroom victories, Goldman points to what many don’t see—the late, lonely hours committing a three-hour summation to memory. Still, Goldman exudes a certain level of instinctual confidence “once the trial bell rings,” relaying that the jury “looks at how you carry yourself, your persona and your credibility, and in turn, they naturally start to find your client credible too, which can make unwinnable cases winnable.”

Empathy is Key

Goldman stresses that he is always humanizing his clients, having stated that “a lot of my success is taking a supposed villain of society and implying to a jury, ‘look, you don’t need to have dinner with the guy to find him not guilty.’” At the end of the day, Goldman says, “Even those accused of the worst crimes, you go down to their core and they have the same blood running through them, the same emotion and empathy, the same fears and vulnerabilities that we all have.” Goldman points to another case in his career—that of Rashaun Weaver, a young black kid who stabbed and killed a white college girl in Morningside Park. “Probably my most unpopular client ever.” Goldman recalled originally reading about the case, naturally

Jason Goldman

thinking that only a cold-blooded individual could commit such a senseless crime. But, Goldman did an about-face as he learned about Weaver’s impoverished upbringing with a father who kept firearms and drugs in his house. Goldman recalls seeing pictures of a playful 11-year-old Weaver only a year before the crime, in a more nuclear household through a social services program. Weaver’s smiling face, “learning how to swim and eating an ice cream cone like any normal kid,” moved Goldman emotionally. He realized that “had Weaver grown up 20 blocks south, on the Upper East Side, as opposed to his lawless reality in East Harlem,” he simply wouldn’t have committed this crime. “People aren’t predisposed to be criminals,” Goldman says. “Usually, it’s where and how they grew up, who they were surrounded by. This kid never stood a chance. Despite the death threats, I’d defend him all over again.” Weaver pled guilty and was sentenced 14 years to life.

The

Lifeline

When asked why he thinks his career has taken off so quickly, Goldman reverts back to his passion. He said, “When I quote a client, they know that it doesn’t just mean they get me 9-5. What kind of retainer would that be? They get me at midnight, on the weekends. I defend them as if it’s a family member.” Goldman typically carries around 20 cases and another 10 or so “situations—people who have problems that need to go away, which the public will never hear about.” His network and his clients have started to tap him for more general legal work, which he has agreed to take on so long as he always “stays in the action” and satisfies his burning desire to defend those being prosecuted by the government. “It’s simply the loneliest chair in the world,” Goldman said. He continuesd on, “To hear the words ‘not guilty’ while sitting next to someone who is facing a life behind bars is like walking on water.”

Padel

The Rise of the Next Major Lifestyle Sport

Within recent months, a new and exciting sport has gained popularity across the country. Known as padel, this sport combines the skill and agility of tennis with that of the ease of play of pickleball. Similarly, to both tennis and pickleball, padel is a sport for everyone of all ages and skill levels. It’s a great activity to play with others while getting in a good exercise routine. Thanks to its rise in popularity, padel centers have, and are set to open across the country— from Miami to New York City to Los Angeles, Austin Texas and more.

In all, padel is fairly simple to learn and play. In order to play, all players must have a designated padel racquet. Similarly, to pickleball, these racquets are smaller in size and are made of hard materials and without strings—unlike a classic tennis racquet. Players must also have a ball to serve and hit across the net to each other. Unlike tennis, these balls are slightly lighter in weight when compared to a standard tennis ball, though, they do share some similarities such as how both sport balls consist of an outer felt material that can be green in color.

Like pickeball and doubles tennis, padel is typically played with four people–two on each side of the net. The game starts with one player serving the ball, which must be hit into the service box on the opposite side of court. The player serving the ball must also carefully aim the ball so that it not only reaches the service box, but it also must be positioned diagonally to achieve this. From there, the ball is hit back and forth between players until one team (or person) gets a point. Some instances occur where points are given if player(s) miss the ball and it goes out of bounds beyond the court, if the ball encounters the net but fails to reach the other side of the court so that the opposing player(s) can return it, or, if the ball bounces twice before being hit by a player.

Similar to tennis, padel follows the same point scoring system which goes from 15 to 30 to 40 and then “game.” When both teams/players reach 40 each–also known as a deuce–then, whoever scores the next two sequential points wins the game.

Restoring Hope After the Fires: Delivering Good’s Ongoing Southern California Wildfire Relief

As we witness the devastating impact of the Southern California wildfires, one thing is abundantly clear: communities affected by disaster need more than immediate relief— they need long-term recovery support to help rebuild their lives, restore dignity and offer hope. As someone originally from Southern California, this issue is especially close to my heart. I’ve been receiving reports from friends and family about their evacuation plans and recovery efforts, and it’s a stark reminder of the ongoing devastation that families are facing. At Delivering Good, we are committed to staying in the fight for the long haul, supporting families and individuals long after the headlines fade.

Our Response: Swift, Targeted and Impactful

Since the wildfires ravaged Los Angeles, Delivering Good has been working tirelessly with brand partners, nonprofit community partners and local leaders to provide essential resources to the most affected families. Our

approach is simple yet powerful: to offer comfort and hope during times of crisis by delivering critical items like clothing, hygiene products, bedding, school supplies and more. These basic essentials become the foundation of recovery, offering not just physical comfort but a sense of dignity and emotional support, helping alleviate the burden of worrying about basic needs during such a difficult time.

We are proud to work with an incredible network of partners who share our mission of providing relief. We cannot do this work without our network of dedicated partners. Notable brand partner collaborations for this response include Aldo, Brooks Brothers, Brand Assembly, Knitwell Group, Lucky Brand, Marc Fisher, Saks Fifth Avenue, among many others. Through these partnerships, we have been in the process of distributing over 130,000 essential items (and counting) worth more than $1 million in merchandise, and we are not stopping there. The generosity of our donors, alongside our vast

network of community partners, ensures that our efforts continue to evolve based on the needs of the communities we serve.

A Holistic Approach to Recovery: Partnering with Those Who Know the Community

While immediate relief is critical, we know that true recovery requires much more than just a donation of goods. That’s why Delivering Good works closely with local organizations like World Vision and Central City Neighborhood House—both of whom are instrumental in providing direct support on the ground. World Vision, for example, has already distributed tens of thousands of supplies, ranging from food and water to hygiene kits and blankets, through a network of trusted community partners. We are also collaborating with organizations like Central City Neighborhood House, who are dedicated to offering holistic services to vulnerable families in Southern California, including providing emergency shelter,

financial assistance and connecting individuals to resources for long-term recovery. Their deep ties to the local community enable them to deliver personalized support where it’s needed most, ensuring that affected families can begin rebuilding their lives.

We stay in close contact with our partners every day to ensure that we are responding to the changing needs of those affected by the fires. Through ongoing conversations, we learn what’s most needed, how supplies are being distributed and when to send product to make the biggest impact. This communication allows us to make informed decisions about where our resources will do the most good, and it strengthens the bond between us and the communities we serve.

Delivering Good’s Long-Term Commitment: Staying for the Recovery

What makes Delivering Good different from other disaster relief organizations is our dedication to long-term recovery. We don’t just respond and disappear—we stay. Long after the initial shock of a disaster wears off, the needs of the affected communities persist. Families may be without permanent housing, their schools may be closed and their communities may still be struggling to rebuild.

At Delivering Good, we know that it’s not just about providing immediate relief, but about staying engaged as communities heal. Through our ongoing partnerships and support, we ensure that those who need it most continue

to have access to critical resources. Whether it’s providing clothing for a child who’s lost everything or delivering bedding for a family without a roof over their heads, we remain committed to making sure the long-term recovery process is as strong as the initial response.

How You Can Help: Getting Involved with Delivering Good

The work we do at Delivering Good wouldn’t be possible without the generous support of our partners and community. However, we can always do more with your help. Whether it’s through monetary donations, in-kind product contributions, or simply spreading the word, there are many ways to get involved and make a lasting impact.

If you’re interested in helping, consider making a donation to Delivering Good’s disaster relief fund, which supports our disaster relief efforts now to help families affected by the California wildfires and future disasters. If you’re a brand wanting to partner with us, you can also donate clothing, hygiene products and other essential items to help fill the immediate needs of the impacted communities.

Lastly, if you work for a brand or nonprofit, we encourage you to explore partnership opportunities with Delivering Good. Together, we can ensure that the individuals and families impacted by the wildfires have the resources they need to rebuild their lives and prepare our

resources and activations for the next one that, unfortunately, may come. We’re ready to help. As the wildfires subside, the work is far from over. Let’s stand together, support each other and continue to provide hope and comfort for those who need it most.

Moishe Mana Celebrates Art Week in Style with Mana Fashion and Faith Connexion; Joins Forces to Open Miami Art Week

Celebrating the vision and philanthropic contributions of Moishe Mana, whose unwavering support for the arts continues to shape Miami’s cultural landscape, Parisian house of sustainable fashion, Faith Connexion and Mana Fashion celebrated the man-of-the-year during the Alta Moda themed event.

To celebrate Art Week in Miami, Mana Fashion chose Faith Connexion to present its new collection at an annual event to celebrate the visionary and chairman of Mana Common, Moishe Mana. The evening, a fusion of luxury fashion, art and entertainment, culminated as a celebration for the real estate mogul and community champion. Mana’s fashion division, Mana Fashion Services is not only a resource, but a pivotal part of the fashion landscape in Miami, presenting opportunities to designers with affordable studio spaces to work as well as to showcase and present collections to both buyers, consumers and more.

“This is a collaboration between Faith Connexion,

Miami Fashion Institute student designers and Mana Fashion. We want Miami to be positioned among the other major cities known for fashion and [to] know the city has a flare like no other. Faith Connexion is 25 years old, so watching the way students adapt the sustainable DNA and trajectory of the brand is so integral.

Presenting this in Miami during Art Week was a great unity for the city and the young designers,” says Aleksandra Sivokoneva, creative director of Mana Fashion.

“While Faith Connexion is one fashion house, it’s also a collective of young talent experimenting in

art, fashion and street culture. Inspired by music, cinema, theatre and live performances, the collective brings a fresh energy and freedom to the fashion world. We’re excited to present this collection together with Mana Fashion during Art Week in Miami,” says Maria Bucellati, founder of Faith Connexion. Together with Miami Fashion Institute, Faith Connexion unveiled its first collection using Technology Resonance, the first-ever artificial intelligence-powered operating system that helps brands and designers make one garment at a time, on demand - aligning with Faith Connexion’s eco-conscious, zero-inventory and zero-waste philosophy. Faith Connexion also partnered with renowned designer Gustavo Cadile who showed

couture styles fueled with Cadile’s passion, heritage and innovation. Recognized by the United Nations as a “100 Disruptors” honoree, Buccellati is a global advocate for sustainable fashion, art and culture. “This collection is an unveiling of our collaboration with Resonance and will change everything about how beautiful clothes are designed, sold and made. Proving a brand can be sustainable and profitable,” says Bucellati. The show took place on Wednesday, December 4, kicking off Miami Art Week in style with an exclusive VIP preview of Faith Connexion’s highly anticipated 25th anniversary archival collection.

The event not only celebrated the legacy of Faith Connexion and its collaboration with Mana Fashion and the Miami Fashion Institute, but also honored the incredible vision and philanthropic contributions of Moishe Mana, whose unwavering support for the arts continues to shape Miami’s cultural landscape. Following the runway presen-

tation, guests had the unique opportunity to shop the collection directly, allowing admirers of the brand to own pieces from this historic collection. The black-tie affair brought together great friends of Moishe Mana including Mayor Francis Suarez, Maria Bucellati, Sam Azar, Aura Copeland, Elysze Held, Danny Santiago, Denisa Palsha. Collaborators and sponsors of the event included: Acqua Panna, Aroma360, Cavit, Cosabella, Daniela Uribe, Jule Lip Gloss, Luca Salon, Styla makeup along with a musical performance by Nutsa Buzaladze.
