one mann’s opinion

BEHIND THE SCENES

I would like to start out by saying that I am extremely excited about our cover story on digital artist Paul Milinski. Digital art, NFTs and the metaverse are all extremely important categories to pay attention to, and they are changing and evolving more and more each day. Milinski is extremely talented at what he does, but I will let my editor, Lauren Schuster, tell you all more about that in her letter. I am also extremely excited about our upcoming Mann Charitable Foundation Golf Outing honoring Mark Heller, president of CIT and Harriet Greenberg, co-managing partner at Friedman LLP, two of the greatest success stories in the history of the financial section in New York City. Besides preparing for our golf outing, my life has been nothing but attending golf outings lately, full of good times and old friends. I am extremely pleased that our magazines have also been distributed at a number of high end events lately. We are always pushing our brand to new limits with the help of my incredible team working on the print magazines, digital magazines, newswires and social media, which are all expanding at warp speed. As a broader point, Lauren and I are thrilled that Mann About Town has become an iconic publication within our niche and that we receive so many exclusive pieces to share with you all. We always look for what’s best for our readership, and follow the vision we have. As a small side story, last September we featured the growing sport of pickleball on the cover of our magazine, as we saw it had picked up popularity in California, where I had gone to watch the National Championships at Indian Wells about a year and a half ago, but it had not yet made its way to the mainstream here in New York. When I was at my golf club this weekend, multiple people mentioned to me that the club had recently added pickleball courts because they were inspired by our cover story. It always feels great to have people tell me that they enjoy the magazine, but to hear that people have followed our tips is even more exciting. I hope you continue to have a great summer and I look forward to seeing you all soon. We have something great in the works, so be sure to stay tuned!

They said it couldn’t be done. We didn’t listen.

We’ve done hard things before, we do them all the time. For most cancer patients, the usual options are surgery, chemotherapy, or radiation. So we’re working on ways to get the immune system to deploy billions of cancer-killing cells and help more patients survive. When some people experienced mysterious COVID symptoms and had nowhere to go, our team created the first Center for Post-COVID Care. It wasn’t that long ago we had to open up your whole chest for heart surgery. Now we’re pioneering a bypass that goes through a few tiny incisions. With this surgery, we can get you back on your feet in weeks instead of months. So if anyone ever tells you there’s no other way—don’t listen.

editor’s letter Welcome back to Mann About Town! It is with great excitement that I introduce you all to our July/August 2022 issue. As we all try our best to beat the heat this summer, we have rounded up the hottest trends in dining, shopping, fashion, art, real estate and more for you all. For our cover story this issue, I got the chance to speak with Australian digital artist Paul Milinski. Milinski’s digital artwork was shown to me by our art director, Krystal Peguero, and I instantly fell in love with it. His incredibly detailed and surreal pieces really spoke to me, and his animations of rain falling over various scenes brought me a sense of calm and peace. Being completely immersed in one of these scenes through the metaverse is an extremely exciting concept to me, and I can’t wait to see how Milinski continues to grow and evolve in the world of digital art. In this issue, we also have a number of other amazing features, including the launch of Serafina’s new cookbook, innovative spa treatments with Exhale Spa, how fine art photographer Ejaz Khan gives back to the wildlife he photographs and so much more! At Mann About Town, we are always looking for ways to expand and provide our readership with content we know you will love, and I look forward to continuing to bring you all the cutting edge luxury lifestyle content you enjoy.

ALICE + OLIVIA CELEBRATES 20 YEARS

n celebration of its 20th anniversary, Alice + Olivia — the womenswear lifestyle brand that allows shoppers to express their own unique whimsical and sophisticated style — channeled nostalgic prom night vibes with cocktails, live musical performances by pop singer Gracie Abrams and DJ Kiss and a number of activities and photo opportunities at the Close East Lawn in New York City this June. Launched in 2002 by Stacey Bendet and originating from her quest to design the perfect pair of pants, the brand has grown to offer readyto-wear garments, gowns, handbags, shoes and accessories. A long-time favorite of celebrities and iconic public figures, the brand has been worn

by Michelle Obama, Paris and Nicky Hilton, Drew Barrymore, Gigi Hadid, Meghan Markle, Gwyneth Paltrow and more. Alice + Olivia is available to shop at boutiques around the world, in addition to 800-plus department and specialty stores and aliceandolivia.com. In what was a private escape from the usuallybustling Chelsea neighborhood, the Close East Lawn, a green space tucked between buildings, was decorated in full with glitter and bold, bright colors. The evening’s guests, who were encouraged to dress to the nines in prom-inspired styles, walked the red carpet, mingled and danced as the sun set on the late spring evening. stations — a wall of rainbow basketballs covered in glitter and a chandelier hoop, a spray-painted recreation of a high school hallway with lockers and gymnasium bleachers and more — and guests were able to visit the airbrushing station for customized Alice + Olivia graphic sweatshirts and the tattoo table for trendy micro tattoos. Near the end of the night, Abrams performed a set that brought guests to the dance floor. The event’s h’ordeurves were provided by Beatnic, a New York City-based vegan restaurant, and signature drinks were provided by Absolut Vodka and Olmeca Altos Tequila.

M

ore than 250 powerful female FIDF supporters came together for a meaningful afternoon in honor of Israel’s soldiers at the New York Tri-State Women’s Brigade Luncheon at the 583 Park Avenue event space. Guests were fortunate to hear from “The Mother of Israel” Miriam Peretz, Israel prize winner for Lifetime Achievement, Israeli presidential candidate and national heroine, who shared her story of tragedy and sacrifice in the face of ultimate loss. The members of the Tri-State Women’s Brigade are among the millennia of women who pour their strength and love into growing a vibrant, safe and thriving Jewish future. The group designates their female-earned dollars to worthwhile projects and initiatives. The top priority for the group this year is to collectively finance a retreat for 200 family members of fallen soldiers. It will give them an opportunity to bond, heal and move forward with their lives. The group is also focused on raising funds for Lone Soldiers and other soldiers in need. “Every day the IDF soldiers protect our Jewish homeland for its citizens as well as all of us in the diaspora,” said Tri-State Women’s Brigade Chairwoman Shari Yardeni. “I’m proud to be part of the FIDF community that is dedicated to supporting them.” Miriam Peretz also understands too well the harsh reality of what is at stake for Israel’s soldiers. In her keynote speech, she detailed how she rose from the pain of losing her two sons during their service, to a place of thanks, optimism and hope in their honor. She chose to live a life with meaning, and her passion for peace, and love for the people of Israel, continues to

influence audiences worldwide. “My children have fallen so that you can live peacefully, knowing that you will always have a home,” said Peretz. “As supporters of the FIDF, you deserve to feel proud of the opportunities you have given to the young men and women of the IDF who are the future of Israel and the Jewish people.” An active-duty soldier, Lieutenant Jessica addressed the crowd about her experience in service and the challenges faced as a female commander in a co-ed battalion. She also spoke about the significance of the financial support received from the FIDF and the profound impact it has made in the lives of soldiers. “They can better focus during missions and grow even more committed, because they feel taken care of and that their service is truly valued.” “We are grateful to Miriam and Lieutenant Jessica for their passionate contributions to the State of Israel and for sharing their stories with us,” said Orna Sheena, director of the FIDF Tri-State Women’s Campaign. “I’m honored to partner with such incredible women who care deeply for the wellbeing of the IDF soldiers and the future of the Jewish homeland.” The event also featured shopping and a fashion show with Steven Dann, a designer clothing retailer. A portion of sales will be designated towards supporting Israel’s soldiers. Co-chairs of the event were Hayley Foster, Victoria Sakhai and Aimee Stoopler.

fter two years of remote events, 285 people gathered in person at The Pierre Hotel in New York City to celebrate four women leaders from the fashion industry at Delivering Good’s 15th Annual Women of Inspiration Luncheon. Thanks to generous guests and event sponsors, the Luncheon raised more than $400,000 to support Delivering Good’s work connecting excess to new merchandise with people facing poverty and disaster. A portion of the funds raised will be dedicated to our ongoing work supporting individuals fleeing the conflict in Ukraine. “Today’s event helps support our daily work, connecting resources with communities in need across the country,” said Delivering Good Board Chair Andrea Weiss. “At the same time, the devastating events of the last several months compelled us to dedicate a portion of the funds raised through today’s event to our work supporting those who have fled the war in Ukraine. Delivering Good has been working to provide needed resources since shortly after the conflict broke out and we will be there as long as we are needed.” The event marked its 15th anniversary by honoring Jordana Guimaraes, co-founder of Fashinnovation and author of “It Can Be

Whether I’m mentoring and growing the next generation of leaders or opening hearts to those in need, there is no price tag that could ever measure the true value of making a difference in someone’s life.” Hosted by luxury style expert and founder of Pop Style TV, Tijana Ibrahimovic, the program also included remarks by Delivering Good Board Chair, Andrea Weiss and event Co-chairs, Carole Postal and Amber Mundinger, music by DJ Hesta Prynn and videos from two inspirational women leaders from their network of community programs as well as one showcasing the organization’s work providing relief for Ukrainian refugees. his June, Opera Lafayette presented a three-day Baroque Music Festival, “The Era of Marie Antoinette, Rediscovered” at El Museo del Barrio in New York City. The beauty of this music cannot be contested, and its relevance was underscored by Artistic Director Ryan Brown’s intelligent productions. The festival opened with a fully staged production of André Grétry’s “Silvain.” The French pastoral story was reconfigured to illustrate the battles for land rights in America’s Southwest, directed by Mexican filmmaker Tania Hernandez Velasco and starred Puerto Rican soprano Camille Ortiz. The second night offered “The Musical Salon of Marie Antoinette” featuring works by Gluck, Chevalier de Saint Georges, Hinner and more. A gala dinner at a private club followed the performance chaired by Nizam Kettaneh and Marifé Hernandez with a benefit committee boasting Annelyse and Freddy Allen, Tony Bechara, Catia Chaplin, Francis Dubois, Ishtar Méjanes, Lisette Prince, Barbara Tober, and Margo and Anthony Viscusi. Emily Rafferty was honored with the Opera Lafayette Leadership in the Arts Award. In their third and final evening, “Concert Spirituel Aux Caraïbes,” Pedro Memelsdorff, a musician scholar whose research focuses on 18th century music in French Caribbean colonies, led a program highlighting the complicated dynamics between imperial France and the peoples of the Caribbean. An integral part of the festival, Opera Lafayette created a commemora-

ost at sea in a small sailboat off the shore of Southampton in 1994, Vittorio Assaf and Fabio Granato conceived Serafina. Managing violent weather and severe hunger, the two stranded friends vowed to open a restaurant serving the best pasta and pizza in the world if they were to survive their ordeal.

In 1995, they fulfilled their promise by launching the highly acclaimed Serafina in New York City. Following its success, they have gone on to open restaurants around the world from Dubai to Japan. To celebrate its quarter-century milestone, Assaf

and Granato share their signature recipes in their first cookbook, “Serafina: Modern Italian Cuisine for Everyday Home Cooking,” with text by Lavinia Branca Snyder. This beautiful collection brings to the table centuries of regional culinary history and local traditions, including knowledge that generations of farmers, fishers, bakers, winemakers and culinary artisans have devoted to their craft. Farm to table is the central tenet of Italian cooking and this is what the two restaurateurs have embraced with passion and joy for the past 25 years. For over 25 years, Vittorio and Fabio have been visiting the Serafina farm and produce partners in

Italy. They hand select and taste the menu ingredients to ensure only the best quality and consistency in their products. They are proud to offer these fine 100% Italian ingredients in all Serafina restaurants. One such ingredient is their olive oil (EVOO), provided by Tomasso Asaro. The olive oil is a cold pressed high quality extra virgin olive oil produced in Partanna, Sicily. Because of their longstanding relationship with Asaro and the town, the mayor even gifted Assaf and Granato an honorary citizenship! Asaro even donated a 400 year old, secular olive tree in Serafina’s honor. The olive oil is produced in a traditional process called, “Mola,” the classical three gigantic stone wheels that roJULY/AUGUST 2022 • MANN ABOUT TOWN

The EVOO is used in many dishes like their baby artichokes, from Puglia which are bathed in the EVOO that they use in their Carciofi E Parmigiano salad. This olive oil has many benefits, including being rich in Polyphenol, the secret ingredient used in beauty creams, believed since Roman times to be the Fountain of Youth, being rich in antioxidants, Vitamin E and Vitamin K , Omega 3 and Omega and Oleic Acid, which can help in reducing chronic diseases and in42

flammation problems, as well as having anti-cancer properties. The one hundred delicious takes on traditional recipes are sure to become favorites. Treat friends to antipasti the Serafina way with delicious small plates like artichoke carpaccio with shrimp, arancini with meat and the restaurant’s beloved calamari recipe. Salads like spinach and goat cheese, beet and pistachio and avocado and brussels sprouts sparkle with the season’s best produce. The first course chapter highlights such comfort fare as Farfalle al Limoncello, Gnocchi di Mamma and Risotto with Asparagus.

Dishes like Wrapped Bass Fillet with Pinot Grigio, Seared Salmon with Farro and Grilled Filet Mignon with Cristina’s Seasoned Salt bring weeknight dinners and Sunday suppers to new heights. There are Serafina’s world-famous pizzas, sensational side dishes and, of course, dolci (including Torta della Nonna)! Beautifully photographed and lovingly written, “Serafi na: Modern Italian Cuisine for Everyday Home Cooking” is a must-have for home cooks curious to delve deeper into regional Italian cuisine. And it is sure to be a treasured keepsake for the restaurant’s legion of loyal fans.

istinction, prestige, and rarity are some of the descriptors used to highlight special places and possessions. When it comes to the education of our youth today, there is a je ne sais quoi factor. Education is not a singular approach as the future leaders who walk the halls of our 7th through 12thgrade schools are varied and complex. The individuals grow, learn and express themselves as uniquely as the sparkle from a precious stone among the Crown Jewels. Schools across the globe yo–yo in and out of the classroom trying to find the perfect combination that works for their students. Schools need to be able to provide their students with an education that fulfills all learning types, whether it be auditory, kinesthetic or visual. Different students have different needs when it comes to learning, and finding a method that caters to everyone can be difficult. Schools should also keep in mind the engagement level of the students. If a student is not engaged in what they are doing, then they are likely not going to retain the information. Therefore, schools need to make sure that they are providing an interactive and engaging learning experience for their students if they want them to succeed. Although it can be difficult, finding a balance between these two important factors is essential for any school that wants to provide its students with a first-class education. For many decades, the primary focus on the minds of parents and students alike was which college to attend. Today, it is often a long-involved query of which elementary, intermediate and high school will set up students to get into the coveted college or university resulting in opportunities later in life. There is fierce competition, immense pressure and exhaustive conversation on the topic in households across the country. Despite competition for grades and extracurricular activities, there is one monumental thought on the minds of parents, students, school administrators, government leaders and likely most citizens: safety. According to the Statista Research Department’s study published on May 16, 2022, there were 240 non-active shooter shootings and 9 active shooter shootings in our schools in 2021. Adding this unknown has placed great emphasis on the safety of our youth. Safety is a top priority at Oxbridge, and they understand the need for students to feel safe in order to learn and thrive. By working in concert with parents, students and local agencies, Oxbridge sets the bar high. What makes Oxbridge Academy stand out? Is it the physical location, the educators or the curriculum? Entering its second decade in West Palm Beach, Florida, Oxbridge levitates to the top during these uncertain times. It does not take the role of expanding on the foundation of each student’s upbringing lightly. Ensuring the safety of each and every member of the student body and staff is considered and addressed. In these uncertain times, those that have entrusted Oxbridge with the care and education of their children are comforted to know that they spend their days in a place where first-class learning meets safety. More than a place to open a book, play on a team and build friendships, Oxbridge equips those who attend with far greater attributes and skills. With

ON THE UPSWING the landscape of technology, arts and culture evolving, creating a home for your children that is worthy of their time, engagement and investment is at the forefront of each decision. In a world obsessed with getting ahead and navigating all options for your child, the most refreshing feedback for Margaret Luce was when her son Conrad said, “Mom, I am really looking forward to graduating with my class.” Luce said her son is actually enjoying school, his classmates and growth opportunities, and has experienced a wide variety of courses. Engaging in debate and enjoying and exploring music is helping her son, and she is gifted with watching him discover his passion, one of the most rewarding moments. Opportunities at Oxbridge include Cambridge Scholars, a signature program at Cambridge University in England. Cambridge Scholars immerses students in English history and literature through a curated two-week study program at the iconic university. Suppose the arts, sports or technology are a draw to your child. In that case, this distinctive academy has an array of top-tier programs that expand their minds and connect them with students who push them to be critical thinkers, global citizens and peak performers. Oxbridge plays a vital role in the development of young minds. They provide an environment for learning that is both challenging and stimulating. In addition, the school offers a variety of resources that can help students to reach their full potential. As a result, it is no surprise that many parents choose to send their children to this first-class school. Oxbridge recognizes the importance of the mental health and well-being of each student, providing nutritious meals to power each student through their day. An education that is second to none and prepares each student for success in the real world. If you are looking for a school that can give your child a head start in life, then Oxbridge Academy is the right choice for you. With experienced teachers and state-of-the-art facilities, the school offers an education that is truly world-class. For more information, please visit oapb.org.

A

fter taking the beauty world by storm over fifty years ago— from Morocco to Paris to New York City in the ’60s—Pierre Ouaknine and Michel Obadia have become legends in the hair salon and studio business in their own right. After several decades as one of the top-tier hair salons in New York, Pierre Michel passed the leadership to Jerome Lordet as the heir and appointed Denise McLaughlin for management. With a history as rich and lustrous as their hairstyles, Pierre Ouaknine and Michel Obadia give us insight into their world, what makes them tick, what’s trending now and the future of the Pierre Michel Salon. Ouaknine worked at Rose Reti, the top colorist in Manhattan, with clients such as Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor and the Gabor sisters (among others). It was during this time that, with his top coloring skills, he decided to open the Pierre Michel Salon with Obadia. The duo became famous at 30 years old when they launched their first salon at 14 East 53rd Street above Hunting World in May 1967. They opened their second salon at 6 West 57th street in 1972 and then opened at the Trump Tower and Plaza Hotel from 1985 to 1998 along with 9 salons at Bloomingdale’s with the Lancôme Beauty Institute. They have been at their present location at 135 East 57th Street for 22 years. “New fashions are about being creative and introducing new ideas that are suitable to the client,” said Obadia. “Clients cannot always readily envision themselves with the new trends so we have compassion and patience to help them embrace their new look.”

Pierre Michel was the first salon in the United States to do foils for hair color. Mark Garrison is a very important member of the Pierre Michel family and a master in his own right for his amazing talent. Before Mark joined the team, he owned the prestigious Mark Garrison Salon which serviced top celebrities and successful clientele for over 20 years. With a range that extends from studio hairdressing in Paris at the very beginning of his career to nonstop styling in France starting in 1984 and throughout the ’90s, Garrison has worked with the highest talent including top supermodels of the ’80s and ’90s, from Linda Evangelista to Claudia Schiffer and Naomi Campbell to Christy Turlington. Elle and Vogue (to name a few) proudly ran covers in the ’80s that featured goddesses showcasing Garrison’s signature hairstyles.

Jerome Lordet is proud and excited to be the new face of Pierre Michel. A natural hairstylist, Lordet has years of experience styling hair (and over 24 with Pierre Michel); there’s no one more qualified as the spokesperson or attuned to the fine standards of where beauty and business intersect. “I started in France because I’m from France, and I’ve been working for Pierre Michel for about 25 years,” Lordet said. “They’re getting older, so they want to get more fresh, up-and-coming things to keep the business going. We have a beautiful space, a great location, so it’s nice to be here and try to give as much beauty to the clients [as possible], especially after the COVID time where everybody has been staying home and not doing anything. I think it’s a great time to revive the beauty and give everyone the feel of feeling beautiful and wanting to do things.” Lordet’s unique approach for his clients tailors their look for them. “The trend right now is going to be curtain bangs, a little bit shaggier and a little bit more messy hair,” Lordet said. “But fashion is fashion, and fashion goes out of fashion very quickly. So, the best thing for me is to create a style for every person and make it different, but something that works with your personality and the way you are.” According to Lordet, using the French technique of controlled cutting, he studies each client’s appearance and lifestyle to create just the right look. His “less is more” approach results in natural, feminine “wash and wear” hair that has more style, allowing a freer lifestyle. For Lordet, hair has got to have movement, depth and sexiness. To the streets of Paris and the Loire Valley with his parents, Lordet knows what looks great and, more importantly, what makes a woman feel. For Pierre Michel, they are pleased to team up with Jerome Lordet and Denise McLaughlin to take the reins. May their salon live on.

TIMEX TRANSFORMS SINGLEUSE PLASTIC INTO A DURABLE WATCH WITH INTRODUCTION OF NEW WATERBURY OCEAN COLLECTION

T

imex, the #1 selling watch brand in the United States (according to The NPD Group/Retail Tracking Service, U.S., traditional watches, based on units sold, Annual 2021), is thrilled to announce the launch of its Waterbury Ocean Collection, an upcycled watch made of oceanbound plastic to tackle pollution. The innovative collection honors the Timex brand’s rich legacy of design and legendary durability and takes a purposeful step toward a more sustainable future for all with the usage of Swiss-made #tide ocean material, furthering the brand’s commitment to tackling important issues such as pollution in our ocean ecosystem.

“For generations, Timex has continued to innovate, designing quality watches that are made to last,” says Silvio Leonardi, senior vice president of Timex. “The Waterbury Ocean Collection is the latest example of our commitment to offering reliable products that not only uphold our legacy, but also look toward a more sustainable future ahead.” Through partnership with #tide, an award-winning organization that works to prevent new plastics from entering the ocean, the bracelet, case and dial of the Waterbury Ocean Collection are made using ocean material. Plastic is first collected by fishermen from the coastlines, which is then sorted, cleaned, shredded and recrafted in a Swiss facility using carbon-neutral transports and solar power, where it is then upcycled. Timepieces from this collection, through #tide, commit to reducing consumption of fossil fuels, creating employment for local communities, specifically fishermen, as well as improving the underwater habitat through its cleanup efforts. The Waterbury Ocean Collection comes in five colorways: gray/ gunmetal, navy, gray/rose gold, and blue and pink, and includes the following key features: • Case, Bracelet and Dial Made from #tide Upcycled OceanBound Plastic • 30m Water Resistant • Available in 2 case sizes: 42mm Case, 20mm Lug and 37mm Case, 18mm Lug Retailing for $99, the Waterbury Ocean Collection is now available for purchase on timex.com and at select retail stores globally.

Parma Nuova Opens on the Upper East Side

Photos courtesy of Parma Nuova

P

arma Nuova is a new casual fine dining Italian restaurant from former La Masseria General Manger Giorgio Manzio and La Masseria Group, Giuseppe “Peppe” Iuele (formerly of La Locanda dei Vini), Vincenzo “Enzo” Ruggiero (formerly of Bice NY) and Executive Chef Giuseppe “Pino” Coladonato. Together, they have taken over the space of Parma, an Upper East Side stalwart that opened in 1977. Parma Nuova, meaning “the new Parma,” will retain the trademark fine-dining quality service of La Masseria with a focus on the flavors of Parma, Italy in a more relaxed environment. Giorgio Manzio was born in Sicily and emigrated to Fort Lauderdale, Florida where he began working on

the cruise ship the Queen Elizabeth II as a server and sommelier. He then moved to New York, where he had stops at Da Silvano and Le Cirque in the New York Palace Hotel. At Le Cirque, Manzio truly learned how to provide top service and took his experience to Bella Blu and finally, La Masseria in 2012. After a decade of service at the popular Theater District restaurant, with Parma Nuova, Manzio has fulfilled his lifelong dream of opening his own restaurant. Rather than recreate the original Parma, Manzio has chosen to use flavors that emphasize staples from the city of Parma in a modern interpretation using local staples like prosciutto di Parma, parmigiano reggiano and handmade pasta. The menu was designed by Manzio in collaboration with La Masseria Group Executive Chef Pino Coladonato. It begins with antipasti, including tavolaccio

di Parma con gnocco fritto, an assortment of felino salame, culatello prosciutto, parmigiano reggiano and truffle pecorino cheese–all from Parma–served on a wooden board with fresh fried fluffy dough; and burratina con melanzane, peperoni arrosto, pomodori secchi, creamy center mozzarella served with sweet roasted peppers, marinated eggplant and sundried tomatoes. The salad course, insalate, highlights such options as the insalata di caprino, a salad composed of string beans, tomatoes, onions and warm goat cheese; and insalata riccia, a frisee salad with parmesan cheese and crispy bacon. Most of the pastas are freshly made in-house daily. Gluten-free pasta is available on request. Le paste features unique selections like cappellacci all’emiliana, a large veal-stuffed pasta native to Parma that is similar

Parma Nuova will also serve Chef Pino’s signature dish, granotto ai frutti di mare and fagioli, korasan grain, known as grano buono imported specially for the restaurant group from Puglia, served with cannellini beans, mixed seafood and a touch of tomato sauce. The entrees, le carni e i pesci, showcase galletto al mattone, a brick-pressed, grilled Cornish hen seasoned with fresh herbs and served with vegetables of the day;

fegato di vitello spadellato all’aceto di mirtilli, veal liver sautéed with onions in blueberry vinegar sauce; and trancio di salmone con salsa alla mostarda, a grilled salmon filet served with grilled zucchini and mustard sauce. Desserts, i dolci, are made each day by a team of pastry chefs trained by Chef Pino. Highlights include torta di ricotta alla vaniglia, vanilla flavored cheesecake made with sweet ricotta cheese; torta di mamma Paola, a flourless chocolate cake served with vanilla ice cream inspired by Co-owner Enzo Ruggiero’s mother’s recipe and crema catalana. For the opening, Manzio has selected a foundation for the wine list consisting of 80 selections from Italy, with the rest of the catalog built with a healthy mix of old-world and new-world wines. The opening cocktail program is similar to that of La Masseria, including the

Parma Nuova Signature Martini, Svedka blueberry and raspberry vodka, St. German elderflower liqueur, muddled fresh blackberries and sage, and freshly squeezed lemon served straight up and the Eastsider, Bombay Gin, fresh cucumber and basil, and freshly squeezed lemon and lime juices shaken and served on the rocks with a splash of soda. The restaurant’s interior has been totally redesigned by Libby Langdon and features vintage Italian posters and black and white photographs transporting diners to the city of Parma. The front of the dining room has elegant French doors that can be opened to accommodate outdoor seating, and at the rear is a wine wall that gives guests a glimpse into Parma Nuova’s carefully curated wine list. Reimagining the spritz, a summer staple, Peroni and Ellis Brooklyn are bringing Italian smells and sips to life in a way only these two brands can through a sensory experience - transporting fans to Italy with every “spritz.” “Whether you’re traveling to Italy this summer or having a staycation while dreaming of the Amalfi Coast, our partnership with Ellis Brooklyn gives spritz season a unique twist, taking you on a idyllic Italian vacation wherever your summer plans may bring you,” said Joy Ghosh, VP of Above Premium Beer & FMB at Molson Coors Beverage Company. “The spritz is a staple of Italy and the summer season, and we’re proud to partner with a brand that has the same passion for ‘spritz’ as we do to help bring it to life through scent and taste.” The Italian Spritz Collection comes in a Peroni-inspired dopp kit which in-

cludes the Italian brand’s signature design elements, featuring the traditional blue-and-white stripe design on the travel bag, as well as nods to the iconic Peroni blue ribbon. Inside each kit, fans will find a special sensory guide, taking them on a journey through Italy with each of the six Ellis Brooklyn fragrances paired with a Peroni-inspired spritz cocktail and Italian locale. “As we head into summer, we’re excited to offer this kit to fans, encouraging them to live every moment with each ‘spritz,’ and allowing their senses to be the guide they need to experience Italy without ever having to hop on a plane,” said Bee Shapiro, founder of Ellis Brooklyn. “Each of our fragrances are meant to take you on a sensory journey, and when paired with the tasting notes of a Peroni or Peroni-infused spritz cocktail, the little moments are elevated.” For those 21+ and looking to purchase this one-of-a-kind collection, kits are available on ellisbrooklyn.com, with a SRP of $140, and will be available in limited quantities. Peroni and its brand developers will also be bringing The Italian Spritz Collection to life in on-premise accounts and key cities across the country during the summer months.

DIGITAL ARTWORK, THE METAVERSE AND BEYOND BY LAUREN SCHUSTER

A

t a quick first glance, it’s easy to mistake Australian Artist Paul Milinski’s work for a striking photograph of nature or sleek modern architecture. However, upon closer examination, the incredible details of his digital artwork start to reveal themselves, pulling you into the beauty of his dreamlike scenes. Though Milinski was drawn to creating art from a young age, he was discouraged from making the “impractical” decision to go into art as a career as he got older. But no matter what else Milinski did, he kept having constant urge to draw and create.

“I was drawing from a really young age, all through primary school and a little bit through high school until I left, and I think what I learned about artwork at my school was that it’s not a good career option and there’s no real future in it,” Milinski said. “So, I stopped pursuing it for a long time and I did a lot of labor work, a lot of factory work, things like that, but while I’d be working at the factory I would be sort of drawing on the desk or something like that. So, I always knew I wasn’t fitting in there, so it got to the point where nothing felt right, so I just sort of dropped the job that I had (it was a landscaping job I think) and then went to do some graphic design and then put a folio together, got a job, did that for a while, started leaning more into art through graphic design, and then just started putting artworks out through my Instagram on the side, just for fun.” Once Milinski began posting his artwork on Instagram, his career began to shift.

COVER FEATURE “[My artwork] was received very well by people [on Instagram], and then I just sort of went out on my own, and now I’m creating art every second I’m alive. So, I’m making up for all those years that I wasn’t doing it,” Milinski said. Now fully embracing his creativity, Milinski finds inspiration in even the smallest parts of everyday life. “I’m completely open to inspiration,” Milinski said. “Even something like a smell will send you back to a distant memory, where the lighting was a certain way, so maybe one of my scenes might have that sort of lighting in it. Right now, I’m getting a lot of inspiration from writing, like lyrics from music; I like to get inspiration from there. Obviously, there’s some visuals that will spark something, that’s undeniable. But I think the key is to get little bits of inspiration from multiple sources and then just apply it to the one piece, and I think that’s how you get the unique artwork.” Milinski’s striking artwork even garnered the attention of luxury jewelry brand Cartier, which led to Milinski designing artwork for their new flagship store in Sydney, Australia, which is set to open later this year. “[Working with Cartier] I pretty much have free reign,” Milinski said. “To work for a company, especially a brand like Cartier, and for them to go ‘just do what it is that you do, and there might be a few push-and-pulls later on,’ that was amazing. That’s pretty much how we collaborated together, so it’s really good.” Milinski has also recently entered the NFT (Non-Fungible Token) market, with his most recent drop being a collection called “Synthetic Cascades,” in partnership with NFT marketplace Nifty Gateway. “[NFTs] are very exciting,” Milinski said. “It’s just a super unusual thing that happened and it happened really really quick. I believe it’s a massive solution to a problem for digital artists. For so long we’ve been creating and it’s been perceived as being worth absolutely nothing and now it’s worth absolutely everything. It’s so exciting to be part of something where artists are not getting screwed over anymore. So, I love it, I think it’s such a good thing.” While Milinski is an avid supporter of NFTs now, he admits he was hesitant to get into the market at first. “It was definitely tricky to get into, because when you’ve never heard of it before and you get a message on Instagram—that’s where I first heard about it, the founder from Nifty Gateway was trying to get me to do a drop—I thought it was a scam multiple times over, until it wasn’t a scam. I wish I had gotten into it earlier to be honest,” Milinski said. Now, Milinski is also beginning to incorporate his NFTs into the metaverse to make for an even more unique experience for potential buyers. “There’s another NFT drop as well where the actual NFT itself is the [metaverse] gallery, so you can buy the pieces within the gallery and then the gallery itself,” Milinski explained. “You’ll be able to walk around [the gallery] and talk and you can hover on an NFT and it will tell you information about it. More immersive than

I just think that the hardware hasn’t caught up to the idea yet […] I think the idea is just to make it all that more immersive. So, if you think about the jump from Web 1 to Web 2, with Web 1, it was just HTML on a screen, and now Web 2, think of the best website you’ve seen; they’re amazing already. So, if you were to tell someone in Web 1 that Web

2 websites are going to look like this, they would be like ‘no way!’ right? So, it’s the same conversation here, it’s just from two to three.” Naturally, designing for the metaverse comes with a host of challenges due to how much more in depth the end result is than still images created for Web 2. “It’s 100% harder than just doing a still image, because then I only need to account for the images that are going in that frame,” Milinski said. “When it’s an experience where someone can walk around, it’s essentially a videogame. If you’ve got a video game, you have to make sure the character can’t fall off the edge of something into oblivion. So, you need to sort of cover up all the holes. You need to make sure that the space makes sense. It’s like build-

ing a house in real life.” Despite Milinski’s long hours in front of the computer honing his craft, he’s still looking to connect with people in the real world. For Milinski, this translates into a variety of upcoming projects, including creating furniture designs and continuing to work with Cartier. “I think, for me, making something physical is a priority,” Milinski said. “I really want to start getting out there in the real world because I’m very much in front of the computer all the time, so it would be nice to see something tangible.” For more information, follow @paul_milinski on Instagram and Twitter or visit his website milinski.studio. O

n a recent spring day, a 29-yearold patient with double vision lay before Joshua Bederson, MD, the Leonard I. Malis, MD/Corinne and Joseph Graber Professor of Neurosurgery and Chair of Neurosurgery at Mount Sinai Health System in New York City. The cause of the patient’s vision problems was a tumor behind the bones at the base of the skull. As it grew, the tumor pressed into the part of the brainstem supplied by microscopic blood vessels that feed the tiny, fragile—and critical—brain cell nuclei and nerves that control movement in the eyes, the face and the limbs.

With a steady hand and years of experience, Dr. Bederson slowly and carefully untangled the tumor from those essential structures. “During the operation, I tried to peel the tumor away from those fragile brainstem structures to restore nature’s beautiful anatomy,” he said. Building a Top Neurosurgery Program To Dr. Bederson, brain surgery is a form of art.

Hospital was ranked number nine in the nation’s top 10 in Neurosurgery and Neurology by U.S. News & World Report and number 8 globally in Neurosurgery by Newsweek. Creative thinking at Mount Sinai has also led to the development of new medical devices and technologies that are accelerating the field. “I really love medicine, and I feel a deep sense of gratitude and privilege that Mount Sinai allows me to continue my work to improve patients’ lives,” Dr. Bederson said. Art, Athletics, and Brain Surgery Dr. Bederson’s roots at Mount Sinai run deep. In fact, he was born at The Mount Sinai Hospital. However, medicine wasn’t on his radar during his early academic years. An accomplished athlete, he went to Cornell University to join the gymnastics team. There, he became a three-time Ivy League Gymnastics All-Around Champion. At Cornell, he majored in psychology and soon became interested in the neural mechanisms of memory. “I wanted to know why people forget things,” he said. “During my first year, the questions I posed

advisor agreed to the leave only after Dr. Bederson suggested he could also write some medical research articles during his year at art school. The plan worked better than he could have expected. He deepened his knowledge of sculpture, and the paper he published as a medical student, on neurological exams in rats, remains the fifth most-cited journal article in all of neurosurgery literature. After a year at NYU, he finished medical school and completed advanced training in neurosurgery, followed by fellowships in the United States and Europe. He joined the faculty at Mount Sinai in 1992. Since then, he has performed nearly 5,500 brain surgeries, making a name for himself as an expert in removing skull base tumors—a challenging surgery due to the many critical nerves and blood vessels that crisscross the area. He also performs surgeries to treat vascular problems such as aneurysms and malformed blood vessels in the brain. Neurosurgery Specialization and Skill As Dr. Bederson focused his attention on skull-base surgery and other complex operations, he encour-

A 3-D reconstruction showing a tumor (green) and the vascular system (red) helps surgeons navigate the brain.

And he should know. He is also an accomplished sculptor. When he is not in the operating room, he’s almost always to be found in his home workshop and studio, forming graceful pieces in welded steel and copper, cast bronze, hammered stone and fused glass. “To me, art and surgery are almost inseparable and indistinguishable,” he said. “One of my jobs is to remove what doesn’t need to be there, such as a tumor, to reveal the beautiful structure inside.” Dr. Bederson applies that same discerning eye to all his work at Mount Sinai, inside and outside the operating room. As system chair since 2008, he has implemented changes that have helped the Neurosurgery Department at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai grow into one of the most respected in the country. In 2022, The Mount Sinai

to my professors were answered in scientific and neurobiological terms.” His professor steered him toward neuroscience, which Dr. Bederson eventually adopted as his major. But because he had attended an alternative high school that didn’t give grades, he realized he had to catch up academically if he wanted to pursue a career in medicine. With the same hard work and determination that made him a champion gymnast, he enrolled in summer school and threw himself into his studies. The work paid off. After Cornell, he completed his medical degree and a residency in neurosurgery at the University of California in San Francisco. During medical school, he took a year off to study sculpture at New York University. The idea had come to him on a whim while studying for his medical board exams, and it took some effort to convince the medical school to sign off on the plan. His

aged other neurosurgeons in the department to hone their specialties. “Previously, a well-trained neurosurgeon was expected to do almost every type of case. Since I became chair, I’ve made a point to develop each of our subspecialties,” he said. He recruited leading experts in vascular surgery, pituitary surgeries, pediatrics, spine disorders and many other fields of neurosurgery. Some focus on treating stroke patients, for example, while others specialize in deep brain stimulation for Parkinson’s disease and epilepsy. By becoming hyperspecialized, a neurosurgeon can treat more patients with a given condition and gain more expertise and experience. Across Mount Sinai’s hospitals, surgeons and patients have benefited from the department’s commitment to this type of specialization. “One of my enduring accomplishments has been recruiting and

supporting the world’s best people to lead these programs,” Dr. Bederson said. “That’s what took our department from good to great, and it’s what’s taking us from great to best.” Advances in Medical Imaging Technology By becoming subject-matter experts, the specialists in Mount Sinai’s neurosurgery department stay on top of the latest tools and techniques. They also help invent them. Mapping the anatomy of a brain tumor—and identifying the tiny nerves and essential blood vessels entangled within it—is one of the biggest challenges in neurosurgery. Dr. Bederson knew that new advances in imaging make brain surgery safer and more effective, and he wanted Mount Sinai to be at the forefront of those efforts. In 2012, he co-founded the Neurosurgery Simulation Core to devise new ways to see inside the brain. Working with medical device manufacturers, he and his colleagues developed a simulation system based on virtual and augmented reality. They use many detailed scans of a patient’s brain to create a virtual reality version of the brain anatomy. That 3D virtual brain helps surgeons make a detailed plan before the operation—and helps them explain to patients exactly what will happen during surgery. Later, when Dr. Bederson peers into a patient’s brain during surgery, that same 3D image is projected onto the eyepieces of his microscope. The virtual version is superimposed on the real-life version, enabling him to “see” structures that lie hidden below. “I can make the bone transparent to see

the tissues beneath or see through tissues to locate an artery that I need to avoid,” he said. “We helped develop this technology, and it’s just one example of the techniques our department has developed and brought to bear for our patients.” The Burgeoning Field of Neurosurgery The success of the Simulation Core evolved into Mount Sinai BioDesign, an innovative group that helps experts across the Mount Sinai Health System design new medical devices and bring them to market. In neurosurgery, the opportunities for new technology are almost limitless. Advances in virtual and augmented reality, for instance, may make it possible for physical or “haptic” feedback in addition to visual feedback. Just as your phone buzzes silently in your pocket, surgeons’ instruments may buzz with haptic feedback to let them know they are getting close to an artery or nerve. Meanwhile, “the move toward minimally invasive treatments continues at a rocket ship pace,” he said. “What used to be big operations are becoming smaller and smaller and easier on the patient.”

tance running. He has two adult daughters, both of whom are pursuing careers in medicine. They are following in the footsteps of their dad as well as their mother, Isabelle Germano, MD, MBA, Professor of Neurosurgery, Neurology, and Oncological Sciences, who is the Chair of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons and Congress of Neurological Surgeons Section on Tumors. Dr. Bederson has devoted his life to neurosurgery, and the field and his patients inspire him every day. “I’m constantly humbled by neurosurgery, and I feel so fortunate to have the trust of my patients,” he said. “I hope people feel that Mount Sinai’s ability to care deeply for each patient are hallmarks of their experience with us.”

Dr. Bederson is energized by those advances on the horizon and by the talent and passion of his colleagues. “I’m so proud of recruiting brilliant, kind and hardworking people to the neurosurgery department who will make the lives of Mount Sinai’s patients even better,” he said. When he is not in the operating room or his sculpture studio, he enjoys piloting planes and long-dis-

Anantara Palazzo Naiadi Rome: The Eternal City’s Experience for the Centuries BY LAURIE MELCHIONNE Photos by Anantara Palazzo Naiadi Rome Hotel

MANN OVERBOARD

M

ounted in the center of Rome’s Piazza Della Repubblica, the Anantara Palazzo Naiadi Hotel combines the splendor of the historic Eternal City with upscale contemporary elegance. Grouped among The Leading Hotels of the World, a collection of over 400 luxury hotels throughout 80 countries, the luxurious Rome location of the global Anantara chain was awarded the 2022 Traveler’s Choice Award—and with good reason. Living History 238 rooms and suites sprawl across two wings and four floors and offer rooftop terrace views of the bustling piazza below, balcony seating perfect for enjoying room service breakfast, jacuzzi and separate living room options. As guests sink into the soft white folds of their beds, they stare up into soaring ceilings each night, in rooms that are designed with the influence of the rich history that breathes within the hotel’s very walls. Once the site of Pope Clement XI’s papal granary that stored Rome’s flour and grain, an entire wing with the original structure’s 18th-century ceiling beams is currently under renovation as part of an overall expansion project and will feature rooms with the hotel’s signature satin furniture, carved mahogany doors, and the seductive contemporary and neoclassical interior design. A brief descent in one of the gilded elevators takes guests from the top of the piazza to the lowest level of the building, where floors encased in glass offer a glimpse of the ancient Baths of Diocletian, upon which conference rooms and event halls stand. Other spectacular views that tower just beyond the windows are the Fountain of the Naiads and the Basilica di Santa Maria Degli Angeli e dei Martiri, an ancient church that was also built from the ruins of the Diocletian Baths.

Do as the Romans Do In a timeless city with so much to see and do, the Anantara’s dedicated concierge team provides experiences cultivated to guests’ particular tastes. During their stay, guests don’t have to lift a finger to arrange a variety of authentic activities that deliver the best of Rome: The Secrets of the Vatican, Roman Cooking Class, Rome By Vespa or Cinquecento and Eat, Pray, Love (a curated food tour that lets guests eat like locals as they are escorted through the hottest food spots of the city’s cobbled neighborhoods), are some of the excursions the Anantara has to offer. All tours are accompanied by friendly, informative guides who feel like family by the end of the day. If guests want to be their own tour guide while experiencing the beauty of the passeggiata, the Anantara Palazzo Naiadi is the perfect home base. Less than a ten-minute walk from the lobby, Rome Termini Station is just around the corner. With the sights of Centro Storico all within a walking distance of 30 minutes or less, strolling between the Trevi Fountain, the Spanish Steps or Piazza Navona is all possible within an afternoon. A Dining Journey It is no secret that when in Rome, hunger easily sets in, especially upon return to the glittering marble lobby after a day of walking through the glory of ancient site-seeing. That’s when guests step through time as they leave the historic streets of the city center and sit at the tables of one of the chic dining options. La Fontana, which provides a breakfast buffet laden with creamy cornetti, steaming porcelain cups of caffè and espresso and a rainbow’s array of fresh, ripe fruit, is a hearty way to start the day. With tasting menus from Chef Niko Sinisgalli, Ristorante Tazio features Italian dishes with a contemporary flair. Some menu highlights from the seven-course

dining experience include: Baccala in Tempura, fried Norwegian cod with smoked peppers in olive oil; Tortello Coda Alla Vaccinara, tortello pasta with oxtail and cheese and pepper sauce; and Tempura di Calamaretti di Siciliani, baby squid calamari with autumn vegetables and a light Timut pepper cream. The Lobby Bar and the Champagnerie Bar both serve apertivo bites with cocktails that include a vast collection of Champagne, prosecco and fine Italian wines. Finally, perched on the roof of the fifth floor is the Posh Rooftop Restaurant and Lounge Bar, open from May 20 through October 2. While sipping Peroni or Aperol Spritz paired with olives and salty snacks, guests skim the clouds while swimming in a pool that overlooks breathtaking views of the Roman skyline. A Dedication to Wellness With the ruins of the Diocletian Thermal Baths beneath the floors, it is no wonder that the spa’s services and treatments feature a special emphasis on ancient wellness practices. A holistic menu of massages and facials are available across four treatment rooms. The Diocletian Ritual, a signature treatment, melds olive oil, honey, sea salt, salt-pan mud, laurel, sage, lavender and St. John’s wort to detox and heal the body with the Salt and Laurel Scrub, Cleansing Mud Wrap and St. John’s Wort Oil Massage. The Thalasso Spa submerges guests in seaweed water brimming with the benefits of minerals used by the ancients themselves, such as sodium and magnesium. Spa facilities include hydrotherapy, a Hammam, a steam bath, a sauna and leisure area and a fitness center replete with yoga classes and personalized training sessions all within the backdrop of the lush Villa Borghese gardens. abot, the developer and operator of master-planned golf resort communities, has announced the acquisition of Castle Stuart in the Scottish Highlands. The centerpiece of the iconic property, soon to be known as Cabot Highlands, is Castle Stuart Golf Links, named among the top 100 courses in the world by “Golf Digest” and “Golf Magazine.” As with all Cabot properties, Cabot Highlands will combine jaw-dropping surroundings, world-class golf, exciting real estate opportunities and exceptional service. “Castle Stuart has been considered a benchmark of exceptional Scottish golf since it first opened thirteen years ago. We are honored to be a steward of the land and carry the original vision for the property forward,” said Ben Cowan-Dewar, CEO and co-founder of Cabot. “Our goal is to create unforgettable memories in magical places, and there are few places in the world more awe-inspiring than the Scottish Highlands.”

Photography by Darren Chisholm

Located just five minutes from the Inverness Airport and within driving distance from some of the most famous courses in the region, including Royal Dornoch, Nairn, Brora and Skibo Castle, Castle Stuart is part of the rich fabric of golf in the Scottish Highlands. Routed along the shores of the Moray Firth, the course overlooks panoramic vistas and well-known landmarks including Kessock Bridge and Chanonry Lighthouse. Designed by the late Mark Parsinen and Gil Hanse, Castle Stuart’s rugged natural landscape can be described as a throwback to golf as it once was. The course features holes framed by the water’s edge on one side and bluffs on the other, with rumpled fairway contours and infinity-edged greens that seem perched on cliffs directly over the sea. The property also features an art-deco-inspired clubhouse, a practice facility and a putting green. A new short course is open for preview play and set for its grand opening in the 2023 season. Cabot plans to build a second course designed by acclaimed golf course architect Tom Doak. Located on a pristine piece of land, the course will play around Castle Stuart’s 400-year-old castle. The course will incorporate natural contours, meandering through hillsides and expansive open land with several holes along the water. Planning for the course will begin in the fall of 2022 and construction will begin in 2023 with a planned opening in 2024. “I’m thrilled to partner with Ben Cowan-Dewar and the Cabot team,” said Tom Doak, architect. “We have been searching for the perfect destination for years.

Our goal is to create a distinctly Scottish golf experience that appeals to players at all levels with an authentic links-style course that puts the golf holes front and center.” Real estate will be a key component of the community with sales expected to begin in 2023. The legacy property will feature cottages with upscale, modern touches inspired by the alluring landscape of the Scottish countryside. When homeowners are not in residence, their homes will be available as luxury accommodations for visiting guests. The Cabot Highlands property will be completed with retail, restaurants and communal gathering points. Beyond golf, the destination offers incredible natural beauty and ample outdoor activities including hiking, cycling, fishing, falconry, horseback riding and more. The nearby city of Inverness is located ten minutes away and offers opportunities to experience the vibrant Scottish culture through Victorian-era marketplaces, cathedrals, museums and restaurants. The Inverness area also houses some of Scotland’s top whisky distilleries, many of which offer guided tours and tastings throughout the year. “I couldn’t think of a better partner than Cabot to lead our next chapter. The work that’s been done at Cabot Cape Breton on the courses and within the community speaks for itself, and I know our beloved founder, Mark Parsinen, would be proud of the plans ahead to fulfill his original vision for the destination,” said Stuart McColm, general manager of Castle Stuart and the forthcoming Cabot Highlands. “Not only is this significant golf news, it is also a major boost for the regional economy of the Highlands.” Cabot Highlands is the perfect complement to Cabot’s expanding portfolio of luxury developments anchored by world-class golf courses. The collection includes the award-winning Cabot Cape Breton in Nova Scotia, the Cabot Saint Lucia resort community set to open in early 2023 and Cabot Revelstoke in development in British Columbia. Cabot recently announced the acquisition of its first U.S. property in Florida, soon to be known as Cabot Citrus Farms. Each Cabot property is built around a deep sense of place and the philosophy that truly great landscapes will stand the test of time. The land of a Cabot property dictates how fairways should flow, where greens should lay, and how homes should live in harmony amidst pristine natural grandeur. Iconic Hampton’s Resort Gurney’s Montauk Unveils New Seawater Spa After Extensive Renovation 104

MANN ABOUT TOWN • JULY/AUGUST 2022

G

urney’s Montauk Resort & Seawater Spa has unveiled a renewed Seawater Spa after an extensive $20 million dollar renovation focused on holistic wellness, innovation, and sustainability. The 30,000 square foot well-being destination features the only ocean-fed seawater pool in North America, a full bathhouse experience including a caldarium, thermae baths, sauna and steam, a salt room, indoor-outdoor treatment suites overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, a curated indoor/outdoor wellness space which includes state of the art cardio and weight equipment, movement studio and areas for activations and activities. Notably, to coincide with the spa launch, the resort is now offering exclusive Spa Memberships, providing the opportunity for guests and locals alike to opt into the Hampton’s most bespoke wellness offering, including unfettered access to state-of-the-art facilities and treatments. Gurney’s Montauk has long been an icon of the Hamptons and considered one of the Northeast’s top spa destinations. Situated at the furthest point east on Long Island, Montauk is a beach lover’s paradise, a naturalist’s haven and a historic resort town. The urbanite’s ultimate escape, Montauk grounds city dwellers in the beautiful natural surroundings and local traditions. With the launch of The Seawater Spa at Gurney’s Montauk, with its sweeping views of the Atlantic Ocean and the resort’s 2,000-foot stretch of private beach, the property has not only added a luxurious new level of wellness to the Hamptons but has also cemented the resort’s status as one of the leading wellness destinations in the country. Gurney’s Montauk has tapped some of the leading partners in the spa space, most notably Alonso Designs, the team behind Manhattan’s beloved spa Aire Ancient Baths, treatment expert Dr. Dennis Gross, and leading wellness brands including Biologique Recherche, OSEA, QMS Medicosmetics, Voya and Aesop. “We are very excited to bring a new Seawater Spa to our guests, members and community, allowing access to a level of facilities, treatments and amenities not previously available in Montauk,” said George Filopoulos, owner of Gurney’s Resorts. “After the challenges of the past couple of years, we’ve learned how important prioritizing wellness is, and we are happy to bring this completely new and elevated experience to the Hamptons. The new Seawater Spa only adds to the already vibrant environment at our resort, creating the opportunity for a balanced experience. Whether visiting for a full wellness reset or looking to incorporate health, fitness and beauty into a beach vacation or winter getaway, our guests will find a wide array of amenities and activities at our new Seawater Spa.” Design The seaside spa structure has been reimagined

by architect Ignacio Alonso of Alonso Designs, previously known for their work on Aire Ancient Baths, one of New York City’s top spa destinations. In addition to the spa facilities, the renovation also introduces a new event space to the property. The Spa Deck, a venue available for weddings and large events, has been created on the panoramic rooftop of the Seawater Spa offering unmatched privacy and unobstructed ocean views. One of the main design objectives of the entire facility was to ensure that all parts of the structure complement the spa’s unique and picturesque waterfront location. The entire building has been designed with the sea in mind, featuring new treatment rooms with direct ocean views and dedicated outdoor spaces for seaside treatments and relaxation. With a shared passion for incorporating sustainable practices into design, together Gurney’s Resorts and Alonso Designs sourced and installed environmentally friendly and energy-efficient mechanical and water treatment systems for the new spa. The interior of the spa was inspired by the luxury resort’s natural beachfront surroundings and crafted to evoke a sense of calm, with design elements specifically chosen to help drive attention to the stunning views the building offers. The interiors feature numerous natural materials and tones, playing into the colors and textures of the local environment. To further underscore the connection to the ocean, all the pools and bodies of water also have a custom-designed infinity drain that blurs the edge between the ocean and spa water. Sustainability The spa’s renovation that took place over the course of two years will not only revamp the guest experience and amenities available but has also been executed with sustainability top of mind. The new spa further advances Gurney’s commitment to lessening their impact with features that maximize performance, efficiency and user friendliness, all while helping reduce the spa’s overall environmental footprint. Efforts the resort has taken as part of this innovative and comprehensive overhaul include filters that reduce water waste, energy-saving heating systems and the use of UV to limit the need for harmful chemicals. The pool’s new filtration systems have also been implemented with guest safety in mind, efficiently purifying water for the best spa experience available. Facilities The facilities at the new Seawater Spa include numerous spaces designed with wellness and serenity in mind, including peaceful co-ed relaxation areas and eucalyptus oil-infused aromatherapy steam rooms. The resort’s existing saltwater swimming pool fed directly by the Atlantic Ocean has been renovated and will be complemented with four new bathhouse style experiences – a large caldarium, thermae and a dual frigidarium – all with direct ocean views. Newly designed

treatment rooms, featuring indoor/outdoor space will offer chromotherapy, hydrotherapy and full-body treatments. The fitness center features equipment by top brands including Peloton and Technogym, with the gym thoughtfully designed to maximize space with bespoke touches such as custom designed weight shelves. The fitness offerings are divided into sections based on activity type, with dedicated areas for cardio, strength training and a selection of studios that are home to a robust schedule of group fitness classes. The gym is designed to allow for fitness seekers to enjoy the ocean views and natural surroundings while utilizing the space. Amenities and Treatments In addition to tapping leading fitness brands and designers, the spa also features treatments and products from some of the industry’s top practitioners. Aligned with the property’s mission to elevate the Hampton’s overall wellness experience, the spa offers access to some of the best products and treatments available, while allowing for complete customization and for guests to work with the spa team to curate tailored experiences that help meet their needs and wellness goals. Brands featured within the spa include luxury skincare brand Biologique Recherche that helped to put effective and potent skincare on the map, clean marine beauty and artisanal skin care brand, One Ocean Beauty, along with cruelty-free clean Malibu based beauty brand Osea, which utilizes organic ingredients sourced straight from the sea. The spa also serves as an outpost for skincare expert Dr. Dennis Gross with guests given the ability to choose from a menu of his bespoke facials and skincare treatments. Aside from these luxurious and scientific facials, the menu of treatments also includes massages, body wraps, masks and more, with booked treatments all offering access to the pools and bath house facilities. The spa also features a retail component for guests to purchase the products and technology used during the treatments for ongoing maintenance at home, along with exercise apparel and more. Memberships Further adding to the excitement around the new Seawater Spa, Gurney’s Montauk has also introduced private memberships for those seeking unparalleled access to one of the most elite resorts in the country. The dedicated spa-focused membership further enhances the value and experience provided by the resort’s new facilities, allowing members to take full advantage of the area’s highest caliber of wellness offerings. The spa membership is one of the brand’s three new memberships – Resort, Spa and All-Access – offering members a chance to revel in all Gurney’s Montauk has to offer, including exclusive access to the Beach Club, concierge services and the year-round seawater spa and wellness destination. New spa members also receive one-on-one fitness coaching, wellness classes and curated spa treatments. Memberships start at $17,500.

Ejaz Khan Fine Art Photography Gone “Wild” BY LAUREN SCHUSTER

W

hen moving to New York City in his early twenties to pursue fashion photography and filmmaking, fine art photographer Ejaz Khan never expected that his career would lead to a passion for getting up close and personal with wildlife in their natural habitat. “In 2012, I kind of stumbled upon this project and made a film which ended up at the Cannes Film Festival and I was nominated for best director. So, at that point I said to myself ‘yes, I think I can make it as a director, you know, I am better than Steven Spielberg and so on,’” Khan said with a laugh. “So, I went on to make another film after that, and that film, the producers pulled out halfway through, so that led me to depression; I was frustrated with myself.” Seeking to clear his head and escape the pressure of figuring out what to do next, Khan decided to take a trip to Alaska. “I ran away to Alaska from New York,” Khan said. “I was supposed to be there for a week, but I stayed for three weeks, and I was just enjoying nature. I came back to New York, and I said, ‘you know, this is crazy that as New Yorkers we don’t even realize (or at least I didn’t realize) that there is a huge world out there that I don’t know anything about, you know?’ The wildlife, the birds, the animals, the environment, the trees and so on. So that trip put me on the journey of fine art wildlife photography.” That trip completely changed Khan’s understanding of the world around him, and he immediately set out to find ways to better connect with nature despite living in a bustling city. “When I went to Alaska, I came back knowing that I don’t know anything about the natural world and I was kind of embarrassed, and I just jumped into it,” Khan said. “I studied more, I met more people and the more I learned, the more I realized that being a New Yorker I had no clue what’s going on in the world, and actually at that point I realized [the impact of ] climate change and how everyone (including humans) play a part in our environment: the insects, the bees, the wolves, the horses and so on.”

ARTS & AFFAIRS As Khan began to learn more about the wildlife he was photographing, he wondered what he could do for them in exchange for being his photography subjects. “So, I started to go photograph animals, and I didn’t know what to do with the animals that I was photographing,” Khan said. “When I photograph fashion, I pay my models and we hire them, and they come in and they pose for us, and they act for us and so on. But as far as wildlife was concerned, I was taking from them, because I was photographing them for free, I wasn’t paying them to interact with me, but I didn’t know what to do with it. I felt like I’m taking from them and not giving back to them, and that’s why I started to get in touch with groups that take care of horses, groups that take care of wolves, and so on.” Khan was in the unique position to give a new perspective on the world of wildlife using techniques he would use in the worlds of fashion and filmmaking that he was already deeply familiar with. “I have had a lot of other wildlife photographers say ‘Ejaz, you cannot take a picture like that! It’s not going to work in wildlife!’ and I say, ‘I’m not really doing wildlife, I’m doing fine art, so I can take a picture whichever way I want,’” Khan said. “So, the similarity [to fashion photography] to me is the light, it’s how you direct your viewer’s eye throughout your photograph and where you want the view. So that’s something similar, I think, that goes for any type of photography.” While he finds a number of similarities between the two, Khan also had to learn how to work with a photography subject who has little to no understanding of their role in the photoshoot. “For me—and everybody shoots differently— fashion is something where I am in control of the entire environment: my light, my model, what she’s wearing, my props, my everything,” Khan said. “Literally you walk in and say ‘I don’t want that and I do want that,’ and you have a schedule and you say ‘okay it’s done’ and we have eight hours and then we should

be done with that. And then as far as wildlife is concerned, there is nothing there that you can control. You are just totally at the beck and call of whatever the environment presents to you or whatever the subject presents to you. You could be there to photograph wolves and instead of photographing them, you’re running away from them, because they’re chasing you. Anything could happen in the environment.” Khan has also returned to filmmaking, this time with the goal of raising awareness of important causes. “We’ve created a film called ‘Vanishing Knowledge’ about a gentleman who served in the Vietnam War and came back with cancer because of Agent Orange, and he felt at peace and happy around horses,” Khan said. “So, he purchased one horse, and today he has the largest Nokota horse herd in the world; he’s got 300 of them. But the cancer didn’t go away, he’s dying, and the doctors are not giving him much time. The issue is, when he dies, the horses won’t have any place to live, and they will be put through the pens and then slaughtered. So that was one project in the film industry that I’ve been working on, and I consciously made the decision to make films that raise awareness to things that I personally feel should be.” Khan’s new film topics even go beyond the realm of wildlife, including his most recent film “Trapped” which focuses on sex trafficking in the United States. “While I was filming ‘Vanishing Knowledge’ in North Dakota I came across girls that were, sadly, put into sex trafficking and I thought ‘that is happening here, in America,’” Khan said. “That is something I wanted to speak on. I know it has nothing to do with my ‘brand,’ so to speak, it’s got nothing to do with animals and fashion, but I think it’s something that we need to raise awareness about, that it’s here. It’s happening here and nobody speaks about it.” For more information about Ejaz Khan’s photography, visit ejazkhanphotography.com, and for more information about his films, visit ejazkhanmovies.com.

wide range of environments and character types are explored in the works of the now Miami Beachbased Dean West. Born in Australia in 1983, the artist is best known for his intricate and highly staged photographs that take everyday occurrences beyond the realm of natural reality. Extraordinary in their tonal range, digital clarity and artistic vision, West’s meticulously choreographed scenes, character studies and atmospheric landscapes powerfully yet synthetically link needs to desires and documentation to invention. His works have been exhibited at important institutions around the world including the Columbus

Museum of Art, Faneuli Hall Museum of Boston, the Paris Expo Porte De Versailles, Puls 5 Gallery in Zürich and the Discovery Times Square Museum in New York City. Hailed as one of the most promising artists of his generation and identified as one of the most accomplished practitioners of digital image making as an art form, West has been honored by acquisitions of his work by some of the most prestigious collections of contemporary art, including that of Sir Elton John. Some of his other celebrity collectors also include Jamie Lee Curtis and Diplo. West’s narratives draw inspiration from the total diversity offered by the visual arts. While the tableau photography of Stan Douglas and Jeff Wall inform

West’s understanding of photography as a form of contemporary communication, the paintings of David Hockney and Edward Hopper provide evident aesthetic direction. The fictional world of cinema and the functional language of advertising have also clearly left their mark and taught lessons of their own. International brands have embraced West’s vision through partnerships and important clients such as Disney, MTV, Bombay Sapphire, St Germain, Corona, Starburst and Fox Sports. Recognized as one of Saatchi & Saatchi’s “Top 100 Emerging Photographers” in 2008, West has also been honored with Advertising Photographer of the Year at the International Loupe Awards, Luerzer’s Archive 200

onversations with artists and thinkers have a long history at LongHouse Reserve – its founder Jack Lenor Larsen was a great conversationalist - and a new series entitled “LongHouse Talks” continues this tradition. Over the 2022 season, Director Carrie Rebora Barratt leads conversations with artists, architects, designers, dancers, musicians and other thought partners about living with art in all of its forms.

Alexander Polzin with his sculpture, Parthenope

Artist Bjorn Amelan discussed his sumi ink pictograph pictures which hung like tapestries in the LongHouse Pavilion, some of which were painted at LongHouse. As creative director of New York Live Arts, Bjorn’s shapes often reference bodies in motion, suggestive of archaic writing, seemingly both real and symbolic. His partner, Bill T. Jones, pointed out how “Bjorn’s pictographs are so often phallic” and joined in a lively Q&A. Award winning architect Lee Skolnick told stories about “The House That Jack Built,” recalling more than a decade of conversations on Larsen’s intention to open his house to the public. The propery is what he called “a house that fulfills LongHouse’s mission of living with art in all of its forms.” German sculptor Alexander Polzin presented a chamber concert as well as a discussion of his sculpture “Parthenope,” an enigmatic bronze tree trunk with a secret gold-plated interior, an homage to the siren, on loan to LongHouse for the next two years. Well known in Europe as a director and designer of major opera productions, he presented the chamber concert as part of his program featuring the American quartet, Hammermusik, who premiered new music by Greek composer Konstantia Gourzi, who flew in especially for the occasion. Still to come this season is a talk with Moko Fukuyama, Edwina von Gal, Marren Hassinger, Fitzhugh Karol and Llewellyn Sanchez-Werner on August 5. Macari Vineyards is the presenting sponsor for LongHouse Talks. Tickets are available at longhouse.org. Bjorn Amelan Pictograph

NEW EXHIBITION, “THE HOLOCAUST: WHAT HATE CAN DO,” OPENS AT NEW YORK’S MUSEUM OF JEWISH HERITAGE - A LIVING MEMORIAL TO THE HOLOCAUST Photos courtesy of The Museum of Jewish Heritage

A

major new exhibition at the Museum of Jewish Heritage - A Living Memorial to the Holocaust is now open. “The Holocaust: What Hate Can Do” offers an expansive and timely presentation of Holocaust history told through personal stories, objects, photos and fi lm—many on view for the first time. The 12,000-square-foot exhibition features over 750 original objects and survivor testimonies from the museum’s collection. Together, these objects tell a global story through a local lens, rooted in objects donated by survivors and their families, many of whom settled in New York and nearby places. In keeping with the museum’s mission to educate people of all ages and backgrounds on the broad tapestry of Jewish life before, during and after the Holocaust, the exhibition features countless beginnings, middles and too many endings that make up the stories of “The Holocaust: What Hate Can Do.” Each room, and each object, contains generations of experiences and information about who Jews are, what sustains Jewish communities and what life was like during the period of European modernization, World War I and the political and social movements that brought about the rise of the Nazi Party. Within the Holocaust experiences of legalized racism and fascism, pogroms, ghettos, mass murder and concentration camps are instances of personal and global decision-making, escape, resistance, resilience and ultimately liberation and new beginnings. The audio tour guide accompanying the exhibition, available for download through the free Bloomberg Connects app, fea-

tures narration from actress Julianna Margulies, winner of eight Screen Actors Guild Awards, three Primetime Emmy Awards and a Golden Globe, and Eleanor Reissa, the Tony-nominated director, Broadway and television actress, prize-winning playwright, author of the memoir “The Letters Project: A Daughter’s Journey,” and former artistic director of the National Yiddish Theatre Folksbiene. Anthony Mordechai Tzvi Russell, acclaimed vocalist and Yiddishist and actress Lauren Lebowitz are also featured on the audio guide, for which Paul Salmons Associates provided creative development (Paul Salmons, tour concept and historical interpretation; Leah Kharibian, scriptwriter). “The title of our new exhibition speaks to our institution’s very reason for being,” said Museum President & CEO Jack Kliger. “Antisemitism and fascism are again on the rise throughout the world. Right here in New York, we have witnessed not only a surge in antisemitism but an uptick in violence and harassment targeting many marginalized groups. The time to speak out and act is upon us, and it is urgent. We hope ‘The Holocaust: What Hate Can Do’ will educate and inspire our visitors and honor those who perished in the Holocaust, whose memories are a blessing.” “The Holocaust: What Hate Can Do” is the museum’s first exhibition to open in its core galleries since its award-winning and widely acclaimed “Auschwitz. Not Long ago. Not far away.” concluded last spring. The new exhibition was curated by a team of esteemed Holocaust scholars, historians and museum curators that included Professor Judith Tydor Baumel-Schwartz, Scott Miller, Ilona

Moradof and Rebecca Frank, and consulting curators Professor Michael Berenbaum and Paul Salmons. The Scholars Advisory Group included Dr. Mehnaz M. Afridi, Dr. Charles L. Chavis, Jr., Rabbi Sholom Friedmann, Atina Grossman and Paul Wasserman. “Working on ‘The Holocaust: What Hate Can Do’ has been one of the high points of my professional career,” said co-curator Judith Tydor Baumel-Schwartz, professor and director of Holocaust Research in the Department of Jewish History and Contemporary Jewry at Bar-Ilan University in Israel. “As a historian specializing in the Holocaust, I have always taught my students, through stories and documentation, about what happened, and why it happened. Here, for the first time, I can actually show people how it happened and to whom it happened through hundreds of objects and graphics, most from the museum’s collection, via the stories of the people behind the artifacts, through wall texts and an audio guide, documentary fi lms and survivor testimonies, all put together in a unique and thought-provoking display. The Holocaust may be part of the past, but hatred, and what it can do, are very much part of our present. This path-breaking exhibition serves as a stark reminder of what can happen if that hatred is not stopped in time.” “Eighty years ago, on May 29, 1942, my great grandparents Berel and Sara Fish Hy”d and Velvel and Zissel Poltorak Hy”d perished in mass shootings alongside 287 other Jewish families (over 800 people), all of whom were relatives and friends in Yanushpol (renamed Ivanapol after the war), Ukraine,” said Eli Gurfel, a major donor. “I honor their memories with my support of the

AZ Corner, a recently-introduced public digital gallery presented by ZAZ10TS that showcases artwork on a large LED billboard 2 in the heart of Times Square, kicks off its latest “In Between” series with artist Ben Hagari and his pandemic-inspired “About Face” collection. Located on the corner of 41st Street and 7th Avenue, the “In Between” series of video art is a public service sponsored by Tzili Charney, owner of 10 Times Square and founder of ZAZ10TS, in an effort to have the art continue in the area 9 for public 3 viewing. Hagari is an award-winning artist whose works have been shown in prominent museums around the world. At the center of his project is an expressionless protagonist shown from the back of his head — which is shaved — and a projected face void of all facial features. His attire is worn frontside-back, and his movements are reversed. “The scenarios portray a mundane existence in a world whose marks have been erased,” Hagari said. “Books have no titles or words; photographs are blanked out; labels are removed; we are left with data.
