From the Chair of Council

Welcome to Mannix College 2024

At two meetings in recent weeks, the senior students who have been appointed Residential Advisers and those who have been elected to the MCSS have impressed.

The tangible energy and enthusiasm present on both occasions bodes well for the beginning of the Mannix College year of 2024.

On behalf of the Mannix College Council, I spoke with the student leaders about the foundation of Mannix College by the then Catholic Archbishop of Melbourne, Archbishop Knox, whose vision was to have a Catholic presence at the “new” university in the South East of Melbourne.

Mannix College was built across the road from Monash as both a home away from home and an academic community within the spiritual tradition of the Catholic Church. The first principals were called Masters and they were all Dominican friars. Archbishop Knox named the College after the third Archbishop of Melbourne, Archbishop Daniel Mannix whose longevity in the position lasted from May

1917 until his death in November 1963. Mannix College has adopted Archbishop Mannix’s personal motto: Omnia Omnibus which comes from St Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians chapter 9. St Paul wrote, “I make myself all things to all people in order that some might be saved.”

As the new Mannix year begins, and we welcome our new residents, with the members of the College Council, I want to congratulate you on your achievements that have brought you to university studies and your new home at Mannix College.

Welcome also to the returning students. It is so pleasing that you feel at home here and that you are going out of your way to assist the new residents. Mannix’s motto, Omnia Omnibus, is good to reflect on … “I make myself all things to all people.” If we all do that, it will be a great year and you will all have an abundance of new friends.

Kyinandoo Wilam Clever Hut

Mannix has proudly unveiled ‘Kyinandoo Wilam – Clever Hut’: an expression of our unity and connection to the land and waters.

Painted by talented local Indigenous artist Simone Thomson, this original artwork blends cultural heritage with community spirit and vividly represents the shared journey and diverse backgrounds of the Mannix community.

Simone Thomson, deeply rooted in Victoria’s WoiWurrung Wurundjeri and Yorta-Yorta language groups, collaborated with Indigenous residents of the College to bring this masterpiece to life. The mural, a vibrant mix of symbols and stories, includes the sun representing the college, paths symbolising the diverse origins of the community, and significant cultural elements like the tree of knowledge and Bunjil, The Creator Spirit.

Spanning 4 meters by 2.5 meters, the mural was strategically placed for high visibility and impact. This initiative, supported by the Mannix College Student Society and Monash University’s William Cooper Institute, is a testament to the College’s commitment to celebrating and recognising First Nations culture.

The inaugural Indigenous Advisory Committee, comprising Indigenous and non-Indigenous staff and

residents, played a crucial role in bringing this project to fruition, aiming to create a more inclusive and culturally aware environment.

Simone Thomson’s art is deeply influenced by her Indigenous heritage and the landscapes of Victoria. She has previously engaged with the Mannix community through educational Smoking Ceremonies, strengthening the bond between the College and local Indigenous cultures.

A mural for our community

1. “Wurundjeri” combines ‘Wurun’ (manna gum tree) and ‘djeri’ (witchetty grub), symbolising the land of the Wurundjeri People. Floating gum leaves in the artwork honour their ancestors and the land’s history.

2. Bunjil, the Creator Spirit depicted as a wedgetail eagle, and Waa the Crow, guardian of wind and water, are central totems for the Kulin Tribes. Together, they symbolise protection over land and waterways.

3. The Birrarung (Yarra River), a sacred and essential water source for the Wurundjeri People, has provided food, medicine, and means of travel for centuries. It served as a key meeting and trading place for the Kulin Tribes. Arc-shaped mounds along its banks represent historical and contemporary communities, including Mannix College.

4. The strong, proud tree represents knowledge and learning, growing from a small bud to withstand various challenges. Its deep roots and expansive branches represent the foundation of growth and diverse pathways of life’s journeys.

5. The Sun, embodying life and energy, is represented by a central circle symbolising Mannix College, a focal point for convergence and divergence of paths. These paths, extending from all cardinal directions, signify the diverse origins of students, staff, and the Mannix Community, who gather here for learning and then proceed on their individual life journeys, maintaining a connection to their shared source of knowledge.

6. From a bird’s eye view, ‘U’ and ‘n’ symbols depict a person seated cross-legged, with multiple ‘U’ symbols around a circle representing Mannix students gathered at their communal learning and meeting centre.

7. Kangaroo tracks leading towards the circle represent the collective, forward-moving learning journey of Mannix students, symbolising their growth and community unity, akin to kangaroos’ nature of always moving forward.

8. The surrounding mountains and valleys are depicted as hilly mounds and creek systems, representing the terrain of Mannix’s location in Bunjil’s country, symbolising a deep connection to the land and lifelong learning.

Mentoring Magic

For the second year, our Student and Alumni Mentoring Program (StAMP) connected 20 residents with 20 of our high-performing alumni for support and advice.

Mentees were thoughtfully paired with mentors in relevant fields and engaged in three workshops on employability, personal branding, and adapting to modern challenges like AI in resume writing. Outside these workshops, mentor-mentee pairs meet for tailored advice on career paths, networking, and practical skills for navigating the professional world.

Mannix celebrated its 50th anniversary of transitioning to coeducation on International Women’s Day in March, 2024. The event, held in the Dining Hall and attended by over 80 residents, honoured the pioneering women who joined the college in 1974, marking a significant moment in the institution’s commitment to gender equality.

Speakers at the event included former students and their daughters, showcasing Mannix College’s multigenerational impact. Personal stories highlighted the positive influence of the college, shaping careers and family traditions of excellence and leadership.

The event showcased a remarkable roster of speakers, consisting exclusively of Old Collegians who are mothers and daughters. Jo Lindquist, a member of that first cohort of women in 1974, shared the stage with her daughter, Anthea Lindquist, who followed in her mother’s footsteps 30 years later. Katie Allen, class of 1984, and her daughters, Jemima Allen (2019) and Arabella Allen (2021), also spoke at the event. Their participation underscored Mannix College’s multi-generational influence, a testament to how it has shaped not just careers but family traditions of excellence and leadership, a legacy that commands our admiration.

The celebration served as a reminder of the progress made in gender equality and the role educational institutions play in fostering inclusivity. Reflecting on the past 50 years, attendees emphasised the importance of championing diversity for future generations.

Lifelong Learning

Q: What motivated you to become a tutor at Mannix?

Mannix employs a team of helpful tutors who support our residents in their studies. Here, we get to know Chelsea Fisher, who tutors in Architecture & Design.

A: My decision to become a tutor at Mannix was driven by my passion for architecture and design. I also strongly desired to support and guide budding designers in their academic and professional journeys.

Q: Can you share some highlights from your time as a tutor at Mannix?

A: Absolutely; one of the most rewarding aspects has been witnessing the remarkable growth in my students’ confidence and capabilities. The weekly tutorials have been a fantastic platform for exchanging knowledge, resources, and ideas. It’s been inspiring to see students learn from each other and grow together.

Q: What advice would you give to the tutoring team at Mannix?

A: My key advice is always to remain patient and encouraging. Encouragement is incredibly powerful in building a student’s confidence and in fostering their satisfaction and love for their chosen field.

Q: How has your experience as a tutor at Mannix College been overall?

A: My experience as a Mannix tutor has been profoundly fulfilling. It’s been a privilege to contribute to the development of future architects and designers.

Alumni Ambitions

Old Collegian Dr. Caitlin Paton (2009) is an emergency medicine physician and public health expert.

Q: How do you look back on your time at Mannix College?

A: “Mannix was a time of great freedom and joy for me. It was all about enjoying the little things - summer jobs, pocket money, and spending on what I loved. There’s a unique kind of freedom in being young and not tied down by major responsibilities like mortgages. Sure, you make plenty of embarrassing choices, but you also forge lifelong friendships.”

Q: Did you ever face any challenges during your medical studies?

A: “Absolutely. In fact, there were times when I questioned my decision to study medicine. The teaching style and the lack of structure were tough for me initially. Taking a gap year and pursuing a master’s in public health gave me a new perspective and rekindled my passion for the field.”

Q: Why did you choose medicine, and what keeps you in the field?

A: “Choosing medicine was about seeking a challenging and fulfilling career. What keeps me in it is the constant learning and the privilege of seeing life in all its complexity. Working in emergency medicine especially opens your eyes to societal issues and builds resilience.”

Q: What advice would you give to your younger self or current medical students?

A: “I’d say don’t get too caught up in detailed life plans. It’s good to have goals, but be flexible. Life is unpredictable, and sometimes the best experiences come from unexpected choices. Understand your motivations and adapt your plans as you learn more about yourself.”

Q: Can you tell us about your international medical experiences?

A: “My time abroad, especially in the Solomon Islands and Africa, has been incredibly impactful. Dealing with severe cases and high mortality rates among young patients was challenging but also eye-opening. It’s shaped not just my professional outlook but also my personal life.”

“Success isn’t just about professional achievements; it’s about personal growth and happiness too."

- Dr. Caitlin Paton (2009)

Q: Finally, how do you define success in your career and life?

A: “For me, success is about finding a balance that works for you. It’s about growing, learning, and not being too hard on yourself when things don’t go as planned. Success isn’t just about professional achievements; it’s about personal growth and happiness too.”
