Christmas in July

Starting Semester 2 in style!

With unity and tradition, we welcomed Semester 2 through our cherished Christmas in July Formal Dinner

"Formal Dinners are our favourite!" – a sentiment echoing through generations, embodying the fellowship at the heart of our college.

Welcoming new members heightened the event's significance. The night began with a tantalizing three-course meal followed by carols and a visit from the Clauses themselves!

Amid flavours, conversations wove stories of aspirations and anecdotes, fostering connections central to college life. The clinking of glasses harmonized with our camaraderie.

Under the tree, meaningful gifts awaited – destined for communities in need. This compassion extended our impact, showcasing unity and goodwill's potency.

Beyond glamour, Formal Dinners embody some of the most important collegiate traditions we shared with residential colleges around the work, celebrating our journey, diversity, and each individual's role within our vibrant community.

Newman Lecture

Progressing Gender Equality

The 2023 Newman Lecture was delivered on August 23 by Professor Kate FitzGibbon on the topic, “Progressing Gender Equality in Australia: Why it matters and why we must accelerate current efforts.”

In 2023, the student leaders of Mannix voted that the lecture address gender equality. The College was thrilled to have Professor Fitz-Gibbon, Chair of Respect Victoria, deliver the lecture to 300 residents, staff, alumni, donors and guests in St Dominic’s Chapel.

A Formal Dinner with an expert panel of Monash University staff and Mannix Old Collegians followed the lecture, offering insights into the essential roles that individuals, businesses, universities and residential colleges must play in improving gender equality for the benefit of all.

The event served as a testament to the profound impact of open discourse and shared experiences in driving progress on the frontiers of gender equality.

“We need leadership that commits with heart, mind and wallets to secure the safety of all persons, and to meaningful progress the attainment of gender equality.”
Professor Kate Fitz-Gibbon

Leadership Opportunities

Taking our community forward in 2024

In September, many residents will put their hand up to lead the College in 2024 as either Resident Advisors or Mannix College Student Society (MCSS) Committee Members.

The College employs a team of 13 Resident Advisors (RAs) who are jointly responsible for building community within the College, resident engagement and the after-hours support of residents. The College has a ratio of approximately one RA for every 25 residents. RAs are paid a salary and receive a training package valued at over $10,000. Applicants will submit a written application with shortlisted applicants completing a formal interview in October.

All Mannix residents are members of the MCSS. Elected by their fellow students, the MCSS Committee organises an impressive line-up of cultural, social, and sporting events. Trained by the College and Monash Student Association, the Committee is responsible for representing all residents' interests and helping promote a culture of respect, inclusion, and safety. Applicants will nominate for their preferred position, and the cohort will vote at elections.

Both opportunities provide invaluable skill development opportunities.

Good luck to all who put their hand up to lead in 2024!

Indigenous mural captures community spirit

Connecting us to country

Indigenous artist Simone Thomson crafted the 'Kyinandoo Wilam – Clever Hut' mural at Mannix College, collaborating with our Indigenous students to infuse community values.

Representing the sun as the college hub and surrounded by nature, it showcases diverse paths converging in unity. The artwork features a tree of knowledge, Bunjil the Creator Spirit, and Waa the Crow, guarding lands and waters.

Measuring 4m x 2.5m, it graces the College Office and Dining Hall with powerful presence.

Supported by Monash University's William Cooper Institute, the mural symbolizes a commitment to First Nations culture. Mannix College's Indigenous Advisory Committee, established in 2023, aims to fortify Indigenous engagement and cultural respect, exemplified by this inspiring mural.

Academic Excellence

Celebrating our scholars

On August 9, we proudly acknowledged the outstanding academic achievements of 39 remarkable residents during the dynamic Semester 1 of 2023 a testament to their dedication, diligence, and intellectual prowess.

The event was graced by the esteemed Professor Allie Clemans, Acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) and Senior Vice-President at Monash University, alongside the Very Rev Joseph Caddy AM, Vicar General of the Catholic Archdiocese of Melbourne, who presented the awards.

Among the accolades bestowed were the coveted Knox Scholarships, prestigious honours reserved for the highestperforming resident within each faculty. Notably, these awards carried a notable cash prize of $750, generously provided by the Catholic Archdiocese of Melbourne.

It's worth noting that these awards are fiercely competitive, an acknowledgment of the extraordinary calibre of Mannix students.

At the heart of this event lies the College's focus on helping all residents to pursue their academic potential by engaging with our tutorials, peerassisted learning opportunities and study skills sessions.

Green Impact

Sustainable projects and progress

The Mannix Environmental and Sustainability Advisory Committee has successfully undertaken recent projects, including:

Vegetable Garden Revitalisation

We unveiled an invigorated vegetable garden, sparking student enthusiasm. This hands-on experience deepens nature connections and sustainable understanding. Weekly planting sessions, nurturing, and crop harvesting cultivate appreciation for local produce. The garden educates on eco-consciousness, health, and menu possibilities.

Recycling Station

Mannix established a clothing and recyclables station, fostering ecofriendly practices. It provides easy dropoff for clothing donations and recyclables, championing reuse and proper disposal The station supports environmental consciousness, reducing waste.

Green Waste Bin Trial

Partnering with Monash City Council, Mannix can now divert up to 10 tonnes of food waste from the Dining Hall from landfill annually. Food waste separation, collection, and composting significantly reduced the College’s ecological impact. This partnership advances circular economy principles, guiding the way towards a greener future.

College Games

Team Mannix in full flight

Mannix showed strong teamwork and unity at the recent Monash University College Games The college's involvement highlighted both its athletic skills and its tight-knit community.

Among tough competition from the Monash Halls of Residence and other campus communities, Mannix stood out for its teamwork and sportsmanship, earning the Team Spirit Award. This award reflects the college's values and our focus on creating a sense of belonging.

During the College Games, Mannix students showcased their talents in various sports, including futsal, volleyball, netball, pool, dodgeball and basketball.

Our collective support and camaraderie were exceptional, setting Mannix apart. The cheers from fellow residents created an atmosphere of shared achievement and pride.

The Team Spirit Award underscores our dedication to fostering a strong community and personal growth. It reflects our efforts in creating an environment where individuals strive for excellence and, most importantly, uplift one another.

Mentoring Matters

Alumni mentors for students

The highly anticipated 2023 Student Alumni Mentor Program (StAMP) kicked off this July, marking a significant milestone in fostering meaningful connections between 21 current residents and accomplished alumni mentors within their respective fields.

Under the expert guidance of a seasoned career coach, this year's program has experienced remarkable growth, doubling in size compared to its successful run in 2022 Anchored by a series of three dynamic workshops, the StAMP initiative also offers an enriching three-month professional mentoring journey that equips participants with invaluable insights and guidance.

The program owes its success to the exceptional cohort of dedicated alumni whose unwavering commitment plays a pivotal role in shaping the professional advancement of our students. Their active involvement underscores the profound impact of mentorship, ensuring that the StAMP continues to be a beacon of inspiration and growth for years to come

50 Years of Coeducation Celebrations

Connecting our past and present

In the transformative year of 1974, a time characterized by sweeping global shifts toward gender equality, Mannix College embarked on a historic journey by warmly welcoming its very first cohort of mixed-gender first-year resident students.

As we approach the eagerly anticipated 50th anniversary of our College's complete transition to coeducation, we stand poised to commemorate this milestone with captivating events. These events will serve as a tribute to the exceptional Mannix women who have fearlessly forged paths of excellence across many domains and communities.

If you have ideas or an interest in helping us to develop our celebrations for 2024, please get in touch

In this spirit of celebration and progress, we invite you to join us in our endeavour. Your support would be greatly valued and can be a donation towards us establishing the Mannix College Women's Scholarship.

By contributing to this noble cause, you'll be pivotal in empowering future generations of female leaders at Mannix College

Your generosity will not only honour the legacy of our pioneering Mannix women but also foster an environment where their spirit of determination and achievement continues to thrive.
