NEW CHARITY SHOP FOR HOSPICE

CHARITY SHOPPING IN JERSEY IS SET TO GET AN EXCITING BOOST EARLY NEXT YEAR AS JERSEY HOSPICE CARE OPENS A BRAND NEW SHOP IN THE EAST OF THE ISLAND.

Regular customers at Holme Grown farm shop in Grouville will have noticed changes happening in store in recent weeks as the team prepare the space for what will be a charity shop of the future.

Marcus Meadows, Head of Retail at Jersey Hospice Care, said: “We’re thrilled to be opening a new shop in Holme Grown. With a great café and fantastic local produce on offer in the farm shop, it’s an ideal location for our customers, especially those living in the southeast of the island.”

“Our current plans are that the Holme Grown shop will have a donation point, and customers will be able to shop for furniture, women’s and men’s fashion, footwear, accessories, childrenswear, toys, linens, china, glass, and kitchenware.”

As the trend for thrifting has continued to grow, charities throughout the UK have been focusing greater efforts on their retail offerings, recognising the

increasing value of this important revenue stream. Charity shops have ‘upped their game’ when it comes to customer experience, merchandising, and shop fitting.

The Hospice shop at Holme Grown will aim to challenge the perception of the traditional charity shop, says Marcus: “We are keen to create a space which feels less like a charity shop and one which delivers more of an experiential shopping feel. We want to build an on-trend offer, which is more relevant to today’s shopper. In keeping with the sector’s commitment to sustainability, the shop fit will be urban and industrial in style, with recycled materials – such as scaffold and wood –featuring in the design." 

BRANDON

Known as The Lime Guy, Brandon Dubois, established Lime Pointing Jersey in 2022. His dedication to the craft, quick wit, and topless Instagram videos have quickly made him the goto guy for all lime pointing and granite restoration services.

Brandon didn't just inherit his grandad’s sparkling green eyes; he also got his knack for masonry. While his grandad was a full-fledged mason back in the 70s, Brandon's taken a more niche approach - he's become a lime pointing whiz and turned it into a trade of its own.

Lime-pointing is crucial for waterproofing and enhancing the longevity of stone/granite structures. Given the issues with cement pointing (damp and the granite's inability to breathe and move), Brandon is passionate about replacing all cement pointing with limepointing, single-handedly protecting Jersey’s heritage one building at a time.

JAKE

Jake Le Quelenec began his journey into meat smoking a decade ago, starting with little more than enthusiasm and a willingness to learn. Through countless hours of practice, trial, and error, and by studying the works of barbecue legends like Aaron Franklin and Myron Mixon, he gradually refined his craft. When his career as a tree surgeon concluded, Jake seized the opportunity to elevate his hobby to a new level. He exclusively utilises an offset smoker, a method that infuses the meat with a distinctive flavour through the use of a real fire. Jersey oak is his preferred fuel, requiring constant attention throughout the entire cooking process, which can extend up to sixteen hours.

This slow-cooking technique at low temperatures transforms tough cuts of meat like brisket, pork shoulder, and beef short ribs into tender, mouthwatering delicacies. Jake typically prepares the food in advance and brings it directly to the party or event, serving it to the guests. Alternatively, he can simply deliver the cooked meat. With a passion for cooking and a commitment to quality, Jake offers the finest barbecue experience in Jersey.

Andrei Sandu, known as Dre, has been a barista for 5 years although he has been interested and worked with coffee for about 8 years. Dre loves the social aspect of being a barista. TENSION

Tension is an avant-garde postpunk group made up of Charles Zaman, Sean Durham Waite, and George Galichan. They are in the midst of recording Episode of Corrosion, a 60-minute song that reflects on the decade we have lived in so far.

Episode of Corrosion is being built with the help of producer Wilson Nash and will be recorded at Gilbert O'Sullivan's private studio. This record has the potential to rival the likeness of rock epics like Pink Floyd's "The Wall."

Fresh onto the barbering scene after qualifying from one of the most prestigious barber colleges (The London School of Barbering) in March this year, Rene Le Var works out of The Industry Barbershop.

Rene has taken to barbering naturally, after being in and around the hospitality trade most of his working life, he’s very personable and knows how customer service works to a tee.

Travel-related prescribing involves supplying medications and treatments tailored to enhance the well-being

Travel Insurance: It's a must! Buy it early and check it covers your destination, medical needs and all of your planned activities.

Water Hygeine: When travelling further afield, avoid tap water! Stick to bottled water, even to brush your teeth, and skip ice cubes unless made with safe water.

Probiotics: Consider travel-specific probiotics when travelling- they can help support gut health and prevent digestive issues.

Protect Your Skin: Use sunscreen with a high SPF to protect your skin, even on cloudy days.

Vaccine Requirements: Some countries mandate specific vaccines and require you to present a certificate upon arrival, so check country requirements early.

FESTIVE RECIPES

" Nothing says Christmas to me more than great food and drink and a table full of delicious things to eat: turkey and cranberry sauce, Christmas pudding, and hot mulled wine. I love the aromas of spices such as cloves and cinnamon, and this inspired these three Christmas recipes; Mulled Wine Christmas Trifle, White Chocolate and Cranberry Cookies, and Christmas Pudding Ice Cream Affogato."

MULLED WINE CHRISTMAS TRIFLE

Many trifle recipes traditionally use sponge fingers, but I like the richness of Madeira cake, which you can buy in any decent supermarket, alongside mulled wine for the jelly and the custard.

INGREDIENTS

• 600ml thick Double Cream

• 300g Madeira Cake, cut into cubes

• 300g Raspberries, fresh or frozen

• 1 pack of Raspberry Jelly Mix

• 250ml Mulled Wine

• 100ml Port

• 500g pre made Vanilla Custard

• Crumbled chocolate flake or Hundreds and Thousands to decorate

METHOD

1. Make the jelly according to the packet instructions, using a mix of mulled wine and sufficient water. Allow to cool.

Place the sponge cubes in the bottom of a bowl, top with raspberries and port, pour over the mulled wine jelly mix, and allow it to set in the refrigerator.

2. Whisk the cream with the sugar until it forms stiff peaks. Fold a third into the custard and pour this over the set jelly base. Spoon or pipe over the remaining whipped cream and chill in your refrigerator. Remove and decorate as you prefer before serving.

WHITE CHOCOLATE & CRANBERRY COOKIES

INGREDIENTS

• 225g Self-Raising Flour

• 160g Salted Butter, softened

• 160g Golden Caster Sugar

• 1 large free-range Egg

• 2 tsp Vanilla Extract

• 150g quality White Chocolate Chips

• 50g Dried Cranberries

METHOD

1. Heat your oven to 350F/180C/Gas

Mark 4 and line two baking sheets.

2. Place the butter and sugar in a large bowl and beat until creamy. Mix in the egg and vanilla, adding a spoonful of flour to prevent splitting.

3. Sieve in the flour and mix. Add the white chocolate and cranberries.

4. Using a small spoon, scoop the mixture onto the baking trays, leaving a gap between each scoop of dough.

5. Bake for 10-12 mins until they are light brown on the edges and slightly soft in the centre. Cool for a couple of minutes, and transfer them to a cooling rack. Store in an airtight container.

CHRISTMAS PUDDING ICE CREAM AFFOGATO

Affogato is one of my favourite desserts. It consists of a scoop of milk or vanilla ice cream or gelato topped with a shot of Espresso or an Amaretto liqueur. In this recipe, I use leftover Christmas pudding to flavour the ice cream before adding a sweet, sticky Pedro Ximenez sherry.

INGREDIENTS

• 1-litre tub Vanilla ice cream, slightly softened

• 200g leftover Christmas pudding, crumbled

• 50g unsalted Butter

• Pedro Ximenez Sherry

METHOD

1. Gently heat the butter in a pan, and carefully fry the crumbled Christmas pudding, stirring regularly and being careful not to burn the dried fruit. Set aside and allow to thoroughly cool.

2. Pulse the ice cream in a food processor until smooth, then fold in the cold Christmas pudding before transferring the mix into a freezer-proof container.

3. Place in the freezer for a couple of hours, then scoop into bowls and top with the sherry.
