The Luxury Issue embodies something we at Maniac aspire for. We believe that luxury can come in many forms and isn’t always about swimming in diamonds. In this issue we learn that you can travel like a Maniac on a budget or indulge in the fine offerings of a five-star Bahamian resort like Kamalame Cay. We also believe in working hard to earn these luxuries--we are not handed opportunities on a silver platter. Our parents didn't call the CEO to get us a job. We work long and hard to save up for our Louis Vuitton and Alexander Wang purses. And, not only are we excited by the moment of the sweet transaction, but proud of our conscientious efforts to save every last dollar to purchase them. Don't get us wrong, we aren't saying that those of you with a hefty bank account shouldn't enjoy the finer things in life; we just discover extravagance differently. There is a story behind all the opulence that we describe on these pages.

My stay at Kamalame Cay resort wasn’t just a typical vacation-it was amazing and life-changing. There was beauty embedded in every inch of the island, and it turns out, at the home of the resort’s owners too. I was invited to their home and was able to experience their hospitality firsthand. David and Michael brought me into their residence, where I was taken aback over their art collection. I just couldn't process all of the original pieces by the likes of Matisse, Picasso, Herb Ritz, and Andy Warhol. It was amazing to see all of those names in one house, on one wall, on one small, but magnificent island.

Speaking of art, I had the incredible pleasure of interviewing celebrity photographer Ben Watts, who shoots Victoria's Secret models on the daily. With his charming Australian accent, the interview was down-to-earth. As much as we talked about his projects and A-list celebrities, the one subject that keeps him intrigued is his daughter Ruby because she doesn't enjoy getting her photo taken, but still manages to melt his heart.

When shooting cover model Phoebe Tonkin, she reminded us that true beauty could not be bought. No matter how tempting plastic surgery is, there is something astounding about a natural look. In fact, as someone once said, imperfection is beauty.

What we discovered is that luxury can be found everywhere—through travel, art, food, experiences, and even family. Pittsburgh has always been luxurious, we just now are starting to understand it. It has never been so satisfying to live here--from real estate projects to new restaurants opening on every block. We can finally celebrate the affluence. We here at Maniac appreciate the finer things one interview at a time through the people we meet and places we go. Sometimes the greatest luxuries in life truly are free.

UNDERCOVER

Some people make something as mundane as walking seem a bit more magical. When Phoebe Tonkin stepped into our suit at the Crosby Street Hotel, it was more like she floated in. It’s hard to say what it was exactly; her silky hair, her warm smile, or that je ne sais quoi that some people just exude. Whatever it was, we knew this was going to be a special day and we just wanted to capture the magic that emanates from within her. “I really love doing photo shoots,” Phoebe says, “Some people hate them, but I find it so refreshing to come in and just be myself rather than playing a character.” She said the color palettes were inviting and the props made her feel playful and ready to interact with the camera. Perhaps it is this comfort in front of the camera that made Tonkin a success at such a young age despite having a family far removed from Hollywood glitz and glamour. Raised outside of Sydney, Australia, Phoebe comes from a close-knit family and still considers her younger sister one of her best friends and confidantes despite the physical distance now that Tonkin lives in America. “My family is not at all in the entertainment industry. We’re lawyers and business people,” she says, “For me to be doing this is completely new to my family.” While she can’t visit as much as she likes, Phoebe says she takes two-week vacations as much as she can and her family comes to visit her here. “My family is so supportive and they’re just thrilled that I was able to come to America and establish my own life and identity at 24,” she explains, “That is probably what they’re proudest of.” When she talks about her family, you can almost hear the gratitude and the sense of being grounded that a good family provides. She calls her sister, “The smartest person in the world,” who offers her business advice since she studies business at the ripe age of 22. While her sister is working the left-brain side of the family, Phoebe is happy to take on the creative rightbrain elements. Phoebe’s strong familial bonds in real life are juxtaposed by the somewhat odd television family she has on the CW’s hit series, “The Originals.” Visiting Phoebe’s Instagram page (@phoebejtonkin), one can see a picture of her from the set revealing her character’s prosthetic pregnancy belly. The baby, due sometime next season, is the product of a love affair between her character, Hayley Marshall, who is a werewolf, and former Maniac cover model, Joseph Morgan, who plays a vampire. The

18

baby will be what Tonkin calls, “a hybrid of a witch, werewolf, and vampire.” This strange lovechild in her character’s womb has been an interesting aspect of the role for Tonkin. She says she gets so into her role that sometimes she catches herself cradling her arm beneath the bump in a protective way. “It’s really funny how wearing this belly every day on set does give me a new way to see my character,” she says, “And every few days the size of the prosthetic belly grows,” so Tonkin truly is simulating an actual pregnancy throughout the season. Even though we’ve featured the fictitious baby’s mom and dad on the cover, we are going to draw the line at a werewolf/vampire cover model. Despite being a part of such a hugely successfully show, Phoebe claims she can go about her life without much hassle from paparazzi or adoring fans, but her followers on social media consume her content with voracity. Any picture she posts can get thousands of likes, comments, and retweets in a short period of time. Tonkin feels like all the attention is really rewarding, and she feels like she can control the content presented through social media. “I got into the industry when I was 17 and it was at the time of MySpace,” she says, “There was a learning curve, but now I have a sense that things that you post are permanent, so I’m careful to share what I think the fans would like, but also what I am comfortable with.” Perhaps due to this learning process, Tonkin is now notoriously private. She isn’t interested in talking about her personal life or rumors of a relationship with her co-star from “Vampire Diaries,” Paul Wesley. “I think, unless you do a reality show or something, that your work should really be the focus of your public life,” she explains. In a way, her privacy policy adds to her already alluring presence. She easily fills a room with her charm and grace, but in a quiet way. She says, “I’m not necessarily shy or trying to be quiet, but I’m definitely not a loud person.” As such, any revelations into her private life would probably lessen her captivating draw. We would love to know all the juicy details of Phoebe’s life, but the mystery makes her fans connect more with her characters. Ultimately, that’s the goal of every actor, and the overexposed celebrities can have trouble convincing audiences that they are anything outside of their public persona. Tonkin definitely does not have any trouble connecting to an audience. Her career began with the international hit, “H2O: Just Add Water,” but she has been performing since the age of four when she fell in love with dance. She began attending the Australian Theatre for Young People at twelve, and moved to Los Angeles three years ago to take her career to the next level. It’s easy to see how this early start in the public eye could inspire a sense of protection over one’s private life. One thing Tonkin does reveal about her personal life is her love for her close girlfriends. Like so many of us, she says she finds herself doubled over in laughter at the group texts they all send each other. “It is such a great stress reliever to have a bunch of girlfriends who love and support you no matter what, and you feel the same towards them” she states. She says finding such a great group has been a tremendous blessing to her. Even though Phoebe gets her comedic relief from her gal pals, she binge watches dramas like Glenn Close’s critically acclaimed series, “Damages.” She says, “I have been watching that the last two days in large quantities. It’s just so well made, and I’d love 19

UNDERCOVER to see the behind-the-scenes of that show and what they had to do to learn about practicing law in New York City.” Tonkin says that’s why she likes to provide behind-thescenes stills and footage from “The Originals” set and pictures of her with her co-stars. “I know that’s what I love to see from my favorite shows and actors, so I like to show them what they can’t see just from watching the show,” she states. One thing that people can sense from “The Originals” and “Vampire Diaries” is that the cast seems to be very close. There have been a few documented off-screen romances and the cast often posts pictures of themselves together socializing off set. That sense of family comes across onscreen, and Tonkin says she thinks it’s important for them to have a lot of chemistry. “You know, we’re playing these creatures that have known each other for thousands of years,” she explains, “So naturally, we want people to feel like we really are close.” As a woman who is far away from her home and family, it makes sense that Tonkin has developed such a strong network of friends here and why she has such affection for her cast mates as well as her fans that have made her career possible. “I’ll always consider Australia my home, but I’m starting to feel like Atlanta and New York are home now too,” she says. The filming of “The Originals” is done in Atlanta, but Phoebe says she has fallen in love with The Big Apple, and just might put roots down there. She says she loves taking weekend trips there when she has some time off, and has even started apartment hunting. “I love that New York has people of all walks of life, and when I go to a coffee shop, I inevitably end up talking to someone and learning about their life.” She notes how the people she meets work in all different fields and each has a story all their own, unlike Los Angeles where she notes most people tend to work in or want to work in the entertainment industry. She says, “I love my field, but I want to meet all kinds of people.”

I’m not necessarily shy or trying to be quiet, but I’m definitely not a loud person.

It is her ease with people, despite being among the most beautiful people on the planet, that makes Phoebe so remarkable. It takes a particularly beautiful person to master the art of convincing everyone else in the room that they are the ones who are beautiful. Perhaps that is the je ne sais quoi that we felt when she walked into our New York City location. For a moment, the loveliness of Ms. Tonkin was contagious and we all felt a bit more beautiful. She plays a supernatural character on TV, but we’re starting to think she’s got a touch of something extraordinary in real life too.

through rough terrain. Watts’ took sharp, black and white images of Zac Efron rolling through the Holly wood Hills on a skateboard. Getting celebrities to do tricks like this while appearing natural is one of the secrets to Watts' success. Ben is currently working on his eighth coffee table book, which is a collection of pop culture and social media images. Most of the photographs were taken with his iPhone, and reflect the larger cultural obsession with documenting our lives with our camera phones.

FULL WATTAGE: The Fashion Forward Photography of Ben Watts B y A p r i l H uba l

Ben Watts represents the pop art of fashion photography. His style is bold, urban, hipster, and ultra sexy. He is among the most successful and sought after commercial fashion photographers. His extensive list of clients includes Ralph Lauren, Victoria’s Secret, H&M, Nike, Polo, Gap, and Saks. Watts’ sister is actress Naomi Watts and his father was the road manager for Pink Floyd, so the Watts family is comfortable in the worlds of art and entertainment. And clearly a flair for the creative runs in his family. Watt's interest in photography flourished while he was studying Visual Communications at the Sydney College of Arts in Australia. He became inspired by nightlife, hip-hop, and urban culture, and he would grab a subject from a local nightclub to test shoot. Ben doesn’t need to snag night owls for his shoots since he now nabs A-list clients like Amanda Seyfried and the late Heath Ledger. He likes to think of them as normal people and gives them a task before they get too bored. He captured Jamie Fox x on a four-wheeler spinning ruggedly 26

Recently, I had the pleasure of speaking with Watts about street style, perfecting his craft, and what's it's like to attending the infamous Victoria’s Secret fashion show. Maniac Magazine : Hip hop led you to take up fashion photography. What fascinated you about American hip hop versus other countries’ hip hop? Ben Wat t s: It started here [in America], so it’s almost kind of preposterous when you hear it coming from other places. And I know that sounds a bit vain, but it just doesn’t sound sincere. For a while hip hop was just from New York, as well, so you could kind of have a liking of it. I don’t know, let’s just say Australian hip hop –it just doesn’t flow for some reason. I don’t know. I don’t make the rules. I just listen to the records and to the music and I like what I like. It’s definitely a part of America popular culture and that’s why it sounds most sincere. MM: Your dad was the road manager for Pink Floyd--did that influence your creativity?

BW: He died very early on and wasn’t around a lot. But you know, I guess that he was a workaholic, and I am guilty of that actually. I’m into music; he was into music. Like I said, he wasn’t around a lot. But I guess these are sort of the characteristic that you inherit from people like part of your genetic makeup, it’s in your blood. MM : Who was the first Victoria’s Secret model that you shot? BW: I think the first big one I worked with was actually Adriana Lima. And you know what, I shot her years ago when she first started. Yeah. And the E! Channel came down to do something on her. And I didn’t understand that – even back then she was going to be a massive star. That’s why they were doing something on her because the writing was already on the wall. MM : A lot of photographers love graffiti. I see it in a lot of your shots. And you make it look different than everyone else. What attracts you to graffiti? BW: I just love the color and the “graphicness” of graffiti art. It makes for a great background to shoot up against as well. If I use graffiti in a picture, I use it to complement the photo. I won’t use it necessarily to overtake or overpower the shot. There are a lot of pieces that I love that I wouldn’t photograph up against because it would be too detailed and too strong. MM : Is there any cool projects you can tell us about that working on or are coming in the near future? 27

talent and motivation for when all these things come together. Keep at it. Success will come. It takes time. If you’re looking to become an overnight sensation, well, try another career. I don’t know. It’s not that easy. MM : What was it like attending the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show? BW: It’s great. It’s amazing. Best production. I just went there and was in awe of the live show, how everything is put together, the stage production. It’s incredible. MM : In terms of shooting celebrities, is there anything you do to set the mood and make them feel comfortable? BW: Well, I try to keep people moving and I work quite quickly. So it’s not like long torturous silence. I try to keep it as uncomplicated as it can be so they don’t feel as self-conscious. Surprisingly enough a lot of famous actors don’t really like the whole process of the photo shoots, not their favorite thing to do so you try to make them feel at ease, just get in there and do it. Get it done, you know. They’re like, “Wow, that wasn’t bad.”

BW: We’re going to be doing a little show in Miami Beach with this hotel, the Free Hand, which is like a cool sort of brand of young person’s trendy hipsters in one hotel. I’m working on a book of pictures in Montauk. It’s one of my favorite places on earth. MM : When is your new book coming out? BW: I don’t know yet, but basically I love the photos. I’m a lover of the whole new process of taking a photo [on phones]. A lot of the pictures in the book, most of them, are taken using the phone. The whole format of the picture is going back to a square now. And now how people use photo sharing and stuff. It’s all about that. It’s instant gratification.

MM : Street style is one of your real first photography inspirations. Do you think you were ahead of the curve with that when you had started doing that? BW: No, not really. I mean, hey, I think that’s great. If people think that, I love that. But I’m not going to stand up and start beating my chest saying, “Hey I was the first one ! ” It’s just something that inspired me. I didn’t think about it. I still think that street fashion –a lot of fashion-starts with what people are doing out there in the streets. And then designers get inspired by it. I always had an eye. I’m obsessed with pop culture and music and fashion culture.

MM : What advice can you give to fashion photographers who are entering the business? BW: Just stay with it. It takes a lot of heart. You got to stay focused and have a good strong will, but you have to have 28

MANIAC television In March 1980, the entire country was left at the edge of their seats with the television cliffhanger of, “Who Shot JR?” on the hit primetime soap opera, “Dallas.” Millions tuned in months later to find out who was responsible for the shooting of Larry Hagman’s character, and it made the show an American classic. It wasn’t until six years later that Emma Bell, one of the stars of the show’s modern remake, was even born. Despite having missed the show’s first go-round, Emma has joined the cast as Emma Brown where her character is right in the middle of all the “Dallas” drama, deception, and dirt. To some it might seem like Emma Bell is an overnight sensation, but she has been paying her dues since the age of twelve when she began her acting career in an off-Broadway production. She moved to New York City at sixteen to attend a performing arts high school, and slowly carved her niche in the acting scene through appearances in commercials and television. Bell’s career picked up steam in her lead role in the 2010 film, Frozen, as well as her work on season one of AMC’s “The Walking Dead,” and the horror film, Final Destination 5. All her television and film work ultimately led to her current role on TNT’s hit show, “Dallas.” The steamy drama is known for the characters’ outrageous behavior, but talking to her you realize she couldn’t be more different from her “Dallas” persona. “I usually play these loveable characters who get killed off, so I'm glad to be a part of a television family that has embraced me and I can develop a character over a longer period of time.”

Despite all of the backstabbing and deceit in the plot of “Dallas,” Emma’s real life passion is anything but naughty. She runs a non-profit organization called UnitePeople whose mission is to ”empower the community through an awareness of a healthier more sustainable way of living.” Based in Southern California, the organization is primarily focused on biodynamic food and the promotion of urban farming and sustainable food production in urban communities. Emma says her goal is to “create a network of urban farms in people’s private yards all around [Los Angeles]” and educating people on how to eat better and grow their own food, “even if it’s as simple as a window box in their apartment.” UnitePeople works to provide food to those who provide the, the communities organizations, and the volunteers who made the project come to life. Bell is passionate about the project and aims to educate people about how to work together to produce healthy and sustainable food in their own neighborhoods.

Emma's Real Life Passion Is Anything But Naughty.

Filming on “Dallas” has been somewhat different this season in the wake of star Larry Hagman’s passing. A huge presence in the industry and on set, “Larry’s spirit is still with us and guiding the pens of the writers,” says Emma. “We miss him terribly, but in a way it feels like he’s still right there.”

B E L L OF T HE B A L L

go home and feel safe, the bullying follows them online, so it’s harder than when I was young.” Emma says she was an “uncool” kid and experienced bullying firsthand, and decided to use it to fuel her ambitions. Looks like she’s getting the last laugh.

One thing Emma has noticed since she began working on the show is the response people have towards her character’s naughty behavior. She notes that her character isn’t an angel, but people don’t hold the male characters to such high moral standards. “People comment online and say really nasty things about her,” Emma laments. She says it’s a reminder to her about bullying and how difficult it is now for people who experience online harassment. “I just remember that kids now can’t just

Unlike the stereotype of a Hollywood diva, Bell’s positive attitude shines through when you talk to her. She doesn’t see Hollywood as a cutthroat environment, and says her experiences have all been positive. She says she has been blessed to work with some of the best in the business including recent Golden Globe winner, Jacqueline Bisset as well as television legend Judith Light, who plays her grandmother on “Dallas.” Bell says she feels supported by her castmates and doesn’t worry about competition or catty behavior. “I have experienced none of that,” she says. Notorious for being incredibly humble and kind, Emma did admit to having one diva tendency. She said she is very territorial with her secret chocolate stash. “I like to keep dark chocolate bars around, for chocolate emergencies, and if my boyfriend steals one it can get pretty ugly.” So she’s basically the anti-diva. Looks like Emma couldn’t be less like her character on “Dallas” and we’re happy about that. With the current season of “Dallas” airing now on TNT, and more episodes slated to debut in the summer, it looks like we’re going to be seeing a lot more of Emma Bell. Noel Asmar Equestrian Rides Into 2014 With Chic, Timeless Collections. B Y: H E L E N C E S T R A

It all started when Hermès made horse saddles, the horse riding lifestyle inspired Gucci, and Ralph Lauren trademarked the famous Polo logo. From high society to high fashion, equine enthusiasm has been channeled through clothing and equestrianinspired couture has become a timeless tradition. Today, one woman is taking a cue from the fashion greats. women want to wear. And to us, nothing says luxury more than the high-society, country lifestyle and the fashionably clothed women within it. 2014 is The Year of The Horse and Noel Asmar Equestrian is saddling up for success. Asmar says if only a few words were to describe her company and its clothes, they would be “Quality, stylish, flattering and if I could squeeze in a fourth – staple pieces.” But how did these quintessential wears come to life? For Noel Asmar Equestrian, it all started with Noel’s childhood love of horses,

deeming herself “horse crazy.” She entered a career in hotel management, when she worked in India, Vietnam and Hong Kong, and spent her downtime designing women’s clothing and walking through the markets to discover new and exciting fabrics. This reignited her passion for design. “My sister, an Esthetician, was pregnant at the time and I noticed she wasn’t wearing a uniform. So I created one for her. I did some research online and quickly found out there wasn’t such a product as a ‘spa uniform’ so I coined the term and launched www.SpaUniforms. com. Quite honestly, that segued to what is

Asmar ‘empire,’ as we like to call it at Maniac, has become internationally known for the weaving of practical designs into stylish fashions. She has created Noel Asmar Uniforms, for spa and hotel professionals, Fitness and Lifestyle Collection, Spa Bowls and Accessories for high-end resorts and spas and in 2011; Noel Asmar Equestrian was organically brought into the mix. “Being a horse owner and rider, I was innately inspired to design an Equestrian collection which has evolved to include a beautiful knitwear lifestyle line not just for riders. When my husband and I built a home in an equestrian community in British Columbia, we were instantly submerged into an equestrian lifestyle. We have our horses at home, a special little barn dressed up with a chandelier and a wrought iron railing hayloft. Rain or shine, we needed to be out there with our horses. Noel Asmar Equestrian was born out of a need to find stylish equestrian apparel that was functional but still pretty.” The All Weather Ride Coat was the first of her designs that catapulted her company to the next level, because of its unique ability to protect you and your saddle while out in the elements, all while looking effortlessly elegant. The women’s collections are everyday pieces that are designed to fit the female form. “I want to ensure it feels good and looks flattering on all body shapes. It’s a collection for women. I always try to add something special to every garment. Something that is distinguished and makes a woman feel extra feminine and pretty,” says Asmar. The Noel Asmar Equestrian designs have common themes of leather accents, stylish hoods, collars and cuffs, quilted fabrics and knitwear. As for the Fall 2014 Collection, we will be seeing hints of pink and violet hues, like Radiant Orchid the Pantone Color of the Year and more tailored looks, which are both popular trends of the season. But don’t expect the ordinary, while the collections are timeless and chic, she explains how her creativity allows her

to take the usual and turn it into something special, “Taking the ordinary and making it extraordinary is fun, inspiring and addictive! We push the envelope in the styling and develop fabrics that are technical, but beautiful to wear.” Noel Asmar Equestrian does not just sell clothing; they have become part of the luxurious lifestyle by sponsoring Olympic hopefuls, getting involved with equine-based charities, and attending shows and events. “We have grown into a collaborative team with a background in both high fashion and athletic fashions,“ she says. While we anxiously await the arrival of the Fall 2014 line, we also can’t wait to see what the future holds for Asmar Equestrian. There are no plans to open storefronts, but we may see the line in major department stores across the USA. “We design for functionality first. This is a big differentiating factor. We add slits, snaps, venting in areas for riders to do all that they do like hanging upside down to pick a hoof, mount a saddle, and ride in sometimes awful weather.” Whether you’re picking a hoof or riding in the rain, rest assured, if you are wearing Noel Asmar Equestrian, you are going to look good doing it! 33

MANIAC style profile TANYA BROOKS

WHITEHOUSE SALON “Every once in a while, a girl has to indulge herself.” -Sarah Jessica Parker Classy women with impeccable style and grace are hard to come by these days. When I met Tanya Brooks, owner and artistic director of Whitehouse Salon on a snowy, wintry day, she nailed it in her Stuart Weitzman knee-high crocodile boots, leggings and oversized sweater. Ladies: take note. Tanya is a transplant from Toronto, the New York City of Canada, known for its fashion forwardness, where she owned a salon for 15 years. Tanya fell in love with a man, then Pittsburgh, and now she’s here to stay. She floats through her impeccably decorated, sun-drenched Shadyside Salon with effortless style. As Billy Joel would say, “She’s Got a Way About Her.” If you live in Pittsburgh and you haven’t been to Whitehouse, or met Tanya, you are missing out. B y: M o rg an M c C o l l um

MANIAC MAGAZINE: How would you describe your personal style? Tanya Brooks: Layered, yet monochromatic. MM: Who is your favorite designer? TB: Donna Karan. She uses a monochromatic palate and has a classic style, but with a twist. I’ll mix a DK piece with a less expensive piece and create a perfect and affordable balanced look.

and I just took two laundry baskets to the consignment store. MM: What designer makes your favorite shoe? TB: Donald Pliner. I have so many different shoes that I love, but I really like the way those fit me.

MM: What does a fresh hair cut/color do for a woman? TB: When someone leaves the salon, they will have a twinkle in their eye and they are glowing. You can even notice a difference in their posture. They stand taller and more confident, ready to take on the world.

MM: What are a few key pieces in your wardrobe? TB: In the fall or winter I wear a lot of tights or leggings, over the knee boots (I have three pairs), and chunky sweaters. In the Spring or Summer I like soft linens that breathe and am usually more relaxed or casual. Our environment lends to creativity so I don’t want to take away from that with stuffy attire.

MM: If you lost all of your makeup and could only have one item, what would it be? TB: I feel naked without lipstick. I love bright colors from Urban Decay.

MM: When you are looking and feeling your best what are you wearing? TB: A body-sculpting, tight dress (on the shorter side) with high heels, sophisticated jewelry, and maybe some layered bangle bracelets.

MM: With an endless budget, what would your wardrobe consist of? TB: All Donna Karan, Everything. And lots of diamonds. What girl doesn’t want diamonds?

MM: Who is your biggest fashion icon? TB: Sarah Jessica Parker. She’s got the body of a goddess and no matter what she wears she looks flawless.

MM: Tell us, what is the future for Whitehouse Salon? TB: We are doing semi-annual fashion photo shoots. We feature the hottest trends and post them on the website. (www.whitehousesalon. com) We feature new and chic makeup and try to stay ahead of the game as far as fashion goes. I like to stay one step ahead.

MM: What do you consider to be the biggest fashion faux pas? TB: Gaudiness. Overdoing something. MM: What crucial piece of fashion advice can you lend our readers? TB: Keep it simple, Don’t over do it. Less is more. MM: What fashion items do you splurge on? TB: Shoes and boots. I have all types of shoessome might consider it a shoe obsession. Without exaggerating, I have 40 or 50 pairs 52

MM: As our readers know, you own one of the hippest salons in the ‘Burgh. What trends are we seeing in hair right now? TB: Bangs are big. Colors that we’d been seeing that were a bit harsh or striped are becoming blended. The new short pixie cut with a longer exaggerated bang is huge. A lot of movie stars have done this like Pamela Anderson and Jennifer Lawrence.

MM: Are you a bargain shopper? TB: Not really, but sometimes. I like to consign my old clothes at the NCJW in Squirrel Hill. I like a website called myperfectsale.com. You get designer clothes 40%-60% off.

Whether you’re stopping in for the new, softer ombre, balayage highlights, or just a trim, do yourself (and your hair) a favor and check out Whitehouse Salon. Don’t forget to tell Tanya that Maniac sent you.

Triple Play: Condola RashAd Talks Screen, Stage, & Sound B y: S usie M eiste r

Condola Rashad answers the phone with enthusiasm, but with the slightly outof-breath pant that New Yorkers have when they are walking to the subway in the dead of winter. She apologizes when she has to stop and do something because she says she is “multi-tasking.” This doesn’t surprise me because she happens to be an up-and-coming singer and actress, who is clearly gifted at a variety of things. While it might seem like Condola is just starting to make a splash in showbiz, this Tony-nominated actress says she has been an artist since she was a child. Rashad is a classically-trained pianist, and her band, Condola and the Stoop Kids just released an album called, The Letter 9. She said she 56

started writing the songs when she was on the road in Sweden, but knew all along that she wanted to sing with a band. She says she “somehow convinced these amazing musicians” to work with her, and they started performing a little over a year ago. Condola’s résumé, however, is not limited to music, and is filled with credits from stage and screen including her stint opposite Orlando Bloom in the Broadway production of William Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet.” The onstage chemistry between her and Bloom was so palpable that there were rumors of an off-stage romance. Now that’s how you play Romeo and Juliet! In addition to her work opposite the Hollywood heartthrob, she also starred in the Lifetime remake of Steel Magnolias and appeared on the hit show, “Smash.” While Condola claims the stage is her foundation, she said she was hoping to get work in television to try something different. Her wish came true when she was brought on to star in the upcoming Fox series, “Hieroglyph,” set in ancient Egypt. She said she also, “ Wished to work on something with a bit of fantasy, and I got it, and I wanted to move out of New York for a bit, and now I will for the show.” Who is this good at turning their wishes into reality?! Many might think this type of luck is because they believe Rashad has had a charmed life. If her name sounds familiar it is because she is the daughter of “The Cosby Show” star, Phylicia Rashad, and football star, Ahmad Rashad. She admitted to getting a bit tired of answering what it was like to grow up with her famous parents, and says she had a totally “normal” upbringing. I wondered if the benefits of such a strong familial legacy of success came with a flipside of pressure. Instead of pressure to be great, she says she chooses to see it as “being surrounded by a lot of inspiration. "She added, “No matter what I wanted to do, I knew my parents would support me,” whether it was a creative endeavor or not. Watching Condola Rashad perform onstage, it is easy to see why she excels in a creative environment. She is one of those people who appears most at home on stage. She says she does get nervous when she is singing for an audience because she is not playing a character, but it is simply her, vulnerable to the crowd. “After awhile, though, I just get into it and I start to feel

like myself up there,” she says. When asked if she had a favorite medium, Condola said she has to have both acting and music. “To me, acting and music just go together, hand-in-hand, and build upon each other,” she says. And she has been lucky enough to have found ways to combine them professionally. Her focus now is her new album, which she calls “alternative rock with a little bit of soul and reggae,” and Vogue called her a little more “Joan Jett than Juliet,” in reference to her recent stint on Broadway. No matter what she’s doing, it seems Condola is certain she does not want to be limited to one genre or medium, and has managed to find a way to keep her hands in as many pots as she can handle. And she can handle a lot. Whether or not she has completely embraced the inevitable comparisons and queries about her mom and the legacy that she has created in the arts, it is safe to say that Condola Rashad is doing the family name proud. Follow Condola Rashad on Twitter @phloella 57

magine waking up every day to the smell of fresh coconuts and the beauty of crystal blue water surrounding over 96 acres of pristine white sand. Sound like heaven? It is, and this paradise is actually within reach. Kamalame Cay, a small but majestic island in the Bahamas, encompasses style and luxury in a soothing, peaceful atmosphere. To me, this is what Whitney Houston meant when she sang “You find a point when you will exhale.” Brian and Jennifer Hew, a married couple originally from Jamaica, wanted to create a unique getaway, to forget about the stress of everyday life in an atmosphere that sends an immediate impulse of relaxation and comfort. The couple says the growing crime rate in Jamaica in the 1970's, led them to begin traveling to the Bahamas every year with their family to escape the difficulties. After falling in love with the Bahamian culture and lifestyle, they purchased a small piece of land on which

Kamalame Cay

they built a home that quickly became their safe haven. Their perfect island spot made them yearn for more, and they made plans to purchase a larger piece of property. They dove in and purchased the sprawling island with the promise that they would build a hotel. Their creation became Kamalame Cay. The island took its name from the Kamalame tree, but the word also means love. When they first bought the island it took massive crews to bring over building supplies. There were no palm trees there so they brought over 4,000 coconut trees and planted them themselves. The resort was built between 1994 and 1998, and it took numerous crews to make it the luxury getaway it is now. The 5-star restaurant and resort of Kamalame Cay is a favorite to various celebrities such as Nicole Kidman and Penelope Cruz. The Hews have since passed the torch to their son, David Hew, who is now Operations Manager of the island, along with his boyfriend, Michael King, who is Manager. The pair brings a fresh artistic approach to the resort. David studied at the University of Miami and held a position at the famed Hamilton’s Art Gallery in London. Michael, who is originally from Australia, was owner of The Kontent Group, which published FQ and SIR magazines of style for him and her. As CEO and Group Creative Director

for those publications, Michael developed the artistic flair that is now being used at Kamalame Cay. David and Michael’s backgrounds and knowledge of the art and fashion industries can be seen throughout the special details of the property. They aim to infuse creativity in every aspect of the resort from the Asian fusion, five-star restaurant, extensive wine program, and cookie jars left out each night. If the story of the Hews and their decision to open the resort don’t tempt you to take the trip, perhaps the details of the luxury that awaits you will. Its private nature, might make transportation to the island seem unnerving, but is fairly simple, and embodies the adventure that awaits you. The best way to Kamalame Cay is via Nassau to Andros. Flights to Andros are available for $100 per person round trip through LeAir (www. flyleair.com). Once you arrive at Andros, you are a 10-minute cab ride to the dock where a white ferry awaits to whisk you to paradise.

The Kamalame Cay staff will welcome you with fresh-squeezed orange juice and rum the moment you arrive. It is not long after your first sip of rum that you forget about your cell phone and email. And, then you exhale. It’s easy to embrace the laidback lifestyle as you become unplugged and take in the magical spell the island casts upon you. Time seems to stop as the ferry starts and you drift into 500 yards of snowcone, blue bliss. There is no check-in or bags to worry about as everything is taken care of, and you get your own pink golf cart as your chariot for your time on the island. The cart is your transportation that delivers you to your private bungalow, each of which are named after plants that inhabit the island. The cottages are reminiscent of something out of Robinson Caruso, but with huge, vaulted, dark mahogany, wood

60

ceilings, which stand thirty feet high, the rustic beauty quickly reveals itself as not a storybook tree house, but a getaway for the ultra wealthy. Taking in the surroundings, you realize there is a stone staircase that leads up to a Jacuzzi tub overlooking the bedroom, which adds to the dwelling’s fantasy feeling. No detail of the space was overlooked as it was designed by the genius of lead architect, Jennifer Hew. She says most of her inspiration came from the West Indies. There is also a hint of Asian flair scattered throughout and authentic Bahamian decor. Hew says she wanted to create a laidback family style approach to vacationing that wouldn't compromise style. If you still aren’t completely relaxed by the resort’s beauty and luxury, the spa staff is ready to ease all your troubles away. The spa is built over the ocean so that guests may enjoy the sounds of the waves while watching the fish below as they decompress and heal their mind, body, and soul. Guests can choose from an array of services including manicures, pedicures, facials, and massages. Packages can be designed for anyone based upon your particular needs, and will surely assist in your need to wind down on your vacation.

The resort also offers a variety of outdoor activities such as the island nature tour led by the charming Collette, who introduces guests to the flora and fauna of the island. Kamalame Cay is best known for its medicinal Kamalame trees, an antidote to poisonous wood and its 4000 imported coconut trees. You may venture out on your own by kayak and explore the mangroves (don’t be surprised if you see a flamingo or two). Or, request a guide to take you deep sea fishing or diving. If you’re ready for a completely peaceful getaway without tourist traps and noisy vendors, pack your bags for the tranquil luxury that awaits you at Kamalame Cay. We’ll save a daiquiri for you. has visited mountains, deserts and islands, and mingled with indigenous peoples. “You know, when you meet people all over the world, you realize, they’re mostly good. They’re really almost all lovely,” he states. When I ask him if he has a best friend, he cuts the tip off a cigar, lights it, and takes a deep puff--evidently deep in thought. “You know,” he says looking off in the distance, “I quite like my dad.” His dad, it turns out, is a lot like Q. He quit his job as a lawyer to fly helicopters. He says his grandfather, too, was a high-powered lawyer in their home country of England. Only when they discovered their love of flight did they find what Q calls “freedom.” When I ask him why he prefers flying helicopters rather than airplanes (for which he is also licensed), he says it is the most efficient means of flying, and claims it is truly magical when you’re up there looking down on the earth. Q says he understands “those astronauts who come back from space and go a little looney because it can be quite frightening and enlightening to see the entirety of the planet.” It is both the world’s vastness in relation to us and its simultaneous smallness in relation to the universe that makes Q endlessly fascinated.

Captain Q: “God In a Flying Suit” B y S usie M eiste r

I genuinely am not exactly sure what just happened. I might’ve just Skyped with the most interesting man in the world. As I called Captain Quentin “Q” Smith from my laptop, I was curled up in my bed with a cup of tea, but when he answered I knew it was not going to be just another interview. Not many people actually experience what it might be like to have super powers, but Quentin Smith is not your average guy. Known as Captain Q, this adventurer lives a life that most of us only dream about, and sounds more like a James Bond film than an autobiography. The accomplished helicopter pilot balks at the term “adventurer” saying it is cliché, but there really is no other way to describe it. 62

When Q answered the Skype call, he hit the ground running. He started talking, and walking, and providing me a tour of his “office,” which included an entire hangar full of helicopters, cars, and machinery. As his cyber walking tour continued, Q casually noted awards for aviation, medals for accomplishments, and gifts from exotic friends around the globe. This former World Helicopter Champion of the Year has so many certificates and mementos his office acts as a shrine of his worldly accomplishments. What makes Q so compelling to talk to, however, is how he makes you feel. It’s like when you’re a kid and your parent tells you a fairy tale at bedtime. You want to believe it’s all true, but it seems to be too much. I caught myself

asking, “Is this real life?” over and over, but in Q’s case, it really is true. Q shows me pictures of him at the North and South Poles (and there really are poles there!). He said the surprising thing about being at the North Pole is that you truly feel the sense of being on top of the world. You look around and realize every inch below you is the earth we inhabit. He says, “You look down there, that’s England, and over there, that’s Canada. It’s really a spiritual experience.” Even though his picture at the North Pole didn’t include any evidence of Santa Claus or elves, it looked truly magical all the same. In addition to those notable treks, Captain Q has circumnavigated the globe twice. He

A former physicist, Q has a profound respect for the world in big and small ways. I asked him if anything is exciting to him any more after having lived a life straight from an action movie. He said, “That’s a good question,” about a dozen times before he finally said he has learned to find the beauty and magic in simple pleasures again. He calls himself, “post-cynical,” and believes one can resurrect that feeling of wonder again after losing it. One of those simple pleasures called him during our interview. Q held up the phone and said, “It’s the wife! I better answer in case she needs me.” He answered and left it on speaker allowing me a peak into his private world. Her beautiful French accent was so captivating I don’t even know what they talked about, but I do know their tone, and its mundane marital nature, was

reassuring to me. If anything can make a superhero seem human, it’s a wife. He also has three children. While he didn’t speak about them in detail, I get the feeling they are the “simple pleasures” to which he referred. When he’s not making mischief around the world, Q runs HQ Aviation where he educates students on the trade. He certainly has a lot of experience from which to draw including over 10,000 hours behind the controls as well as ecstatic and scary tales from his travels. His students are certainly in good hands.

or perhaps God in a flying suit. There’s a chance nothing in this story happened, or it all did and praying a tiny bit of his spirit of adventure rubbed off on me. I can’t but hope it did anyway. For more information about Quentin Smith and HQ Aviation visit www.hqaviationllc.com.

Q has even worked on the hugely successful television show, “Top Gear,” where the show’s infamous “Stig” called Q, “God in a Flying Suit.” Curiously, he dodged my questions about whether he was interested or believed in an afterlife. After artfully avoiding the question, he eventually conceded he doesn’t think “there’s a man with a beard and white robe,” but believes in something bigger out there. He thinks we only have a small glimpse of the big picture. I’m getting that same sense about him. The longer we speak, the less I think I know. After I hung up the phone, I wondered if I really had just spoken to a true superhero 63

t looks like he’s at it again. Former Maniac cover model, Jonathan Passavant is proving to be a renaissance man as he reinvents himself as a businessman, designer, and innovator. Deep in the Maniac Magazine archives is a cover featuring the international model, which made all of our knees buckle and hearts melt with his dreamy good looks. I wrote the accompanying story on my childhood friend and described what it was like growing up with such a heartbreaker, and watching him take New York by storm modeling for Ralph Lauren, Estée Lauder, Giorgio Armani, and Christian Dior among others. He certainly made us all proud, but he was just getting started. Aware that modeling is typically a career with a limited shelf life, Passavant began plotting his next move and decided to partner with fellow model, Benj Lee, in a shift to behind the scenes of the design world. Together they founded Passavant and Lee, a men’s accessories brand that recently launched with the release of the No. 25 Briefcase. According to the website, the briefcase “is formed of aircraft grade aluminum, covered in full grain leather, and made entirely by hand to maintain quality and precision.” It is the ultimate in business chic. Not surprisingly, their product captures the essence of Jonathan and Benj: sophisticated, yet rugged; stylish, yet strong; sexy and smart.

The inspiration for their brand and its pieces is the pair’s distinct, yet parallel backgrounds. Passavant, a Western Pennsylvania native, enjoyed what could be called a classic American upbringing as a high school football player and son of a pastor. Benj embraced adventure sports like surfing and skiing, and also grew up the son of a religious cleric, but grew up a world away in Central London. Passavant says, “People often say Benj is the English version of me. We work really well together because we have had common experiences.” They both draw inspiration from their respective paths

and aim to include these elements in the timeless styles they create together. For now, Passavant and Lee are focused on their men’s accessories, but are excited about future projects. They are considering ventures in everything from fashion to more architectural designs like home interiors and lifestyle items. Their company has been three years in the making though, so they realize the evolution of branding can take time and they are willing to put the care and effort into doing it properly. While the Passavant and Lee brand is in its early stages, the response has been overwhelmingly positive. Esquire, GQ, and countless tastemakers have heralded the brand and its briefcase as embodying gentleman’s luxury. Their release party attracted the likes of Ben Lovett of Mumford and Sons, actor Seann William Scott, and many of New York’s most trusted stylists, designers, and journalists. Passavant and Lee is commit ted to creating strong, handsome products and continue to develop new ideas for future men’s accessories. Passavant and Lee is passionate about “true luxury” and believe it is found not in “chasing trends, but in expressing what is timeless.” If their past success and personal style are any indication, Passavant and Lee is a brand that will be creating inspired pieces that will embody luxurious living for years to come. We couldn’t be happier for our former cover model, and we can’t wait to see what he and his business partner do next. Fashion designers are all about making us look good; putting us in the most exquisite and stylish fabrics, giving us new trends and gorgeous handbags to carry around town. Now, high-end designers are in the business of bicycles. 66

$17,000: that’s how much the limited edition Chanel bicycle, with the signaturequilted leather went for in the Spring/ Summer of 2008. The handmade bicycle included a jewelry roll and two quilted bags, which could be turned into shoulder bags making for an easy, chic transition on and off the bike. This bike was the talk of the town and inspired others to take note. It was simple, yet complex at the same time. Karl Lagerfeld, you did it again. Thank you. The Quadrille Promenade Bicycle by Hermès and the Bianchi by Gucci, could not be more aesthetically different, but are both awe-inspiring cycles in their own right. Hermès, who has been making bicycles for decades, kept a vintage feel and a bike designed for a leisure ride. Gucci, on the other hand, stuck with their classic color scheme, black and white with hints of red and green, and designed an 11-speed bike perfect for both fashion aficionados and bicycle enthusiasts. Not only are fashion designers creating these high-priced luxury bicycles, but cycling companies are too. Gone are the days of simple street bikes, companies

like Electra Bicycle Company and Martone Cycling Co. have made a huge impression on us. Martone Cycling Co. mixes fashion and function to create a bike that is sleek and innovative. The bicycles come in five color options, red, black, white, gold and silver. The Men’s Gramercy radiates on the streets in their signature red and is perfect for the stylish and smooth guy. The Women’s Grand in gold, complete with a complementary basket, has a classic look, with an edge--the perfect combination. We also love the Electra Townie Go! This Sky Blue bike is a new spring obsession. Not only is it easy on the eyes, but with Electra’s patented Flat Foot Technology, it gives more comfort and a better ride. Electra doesn’t just do bicycles well, but also has chic accessories, like colorful mesh baskets, with chevron liners.

Off the Hook: This Warrendale Eatery Has Us

Hook, Line, and Sinker B Y: S usie M eiste r P hoto g r aph y b y A dam B ut l e r

Suburbia is not known for its high-end dining, but thanks to Lisa and Glenn Hawley, good food is no longer relegated to the city limits. These former owners of Monterey Bay Fish Grotto on Pittsburgh’s Mount Washington have taken their talents to Warrendale where they opened a seafood restaurant called Off the Hook. Many foodies might be suspicious of a seafood restaurant outside of the city, especially so far from the coast, but the owners of Off the Hook pride themselves on excellence, quality, and freshness. Their fish is flown in daily from the East and West Coasts as well as the Hawaiian Islands, and this commitment to freshness is part of why they consider themselves the region’s premier fresh fish destination. Their fresh oyster bar, located in the lounge area, has myriad options that are ever-changing and brought in fresh daily based on availability, season, and quality. The oysters come with a variety of accompaniments to choose from including house-made hot sauce for some extra bite. In addition to the oyster bar, Off the Hook has numerous fresh fish options from the familiar salmon and swordfish to more unusual options like escolar and big eye tuna from which to choose. Each fish can be prepared a number of ways and can be modified to suit the needs of the customer. Owner Lisa Hawley says they “strive 68

to make every guest have the best experience possible from the moment they walk in the door.” Part of this means having the servers and bartenders prepared to answer questions about the many types of fish, oysters, and wines. The owners want the guests to have a sense that the staff are experts in the field and can guide them through their dining experience. The wine selection is outstanding and is exemplified in the massive wine cooler that lines the dining room. The cooler has glass walls, which allows diners to see the massive collection firsthand. Not only is their bottled wine list extensive, they have a premium wines-bythe-glass list that supplements their standard by-the-glass list. What makes this premium list spectacular is that it consists of pours you would only be able to have by the bottle at other restaurants. Owner Glenn Hawley wanted to allow their guests to try higher end wines without committing to the entire bottle. Glenn is always updating the selection and strives to feature unique vintages at a variety of price points. The menu at Off the Hook features some seafood standards that taste anything but. The signature jumbo lump Crab Cake is somehow light while also rich with large pieces of fresh crab and paired with a tangy Remoulade sauce. Their Walu Escolar fish, which is

sometimes called the “butter fish” for it’s rich, buttery taste, is succulent, and like the other options can be prepared a variety of ways. The New England Clam Chowder is creamy, perfectly seasoned, and an excellent starter for a seafood meal. One of the most interesting features of Off the Hook is a chef’s table in the kitchen that allows diners to have a personal, intimate dining experience in the heart of the restaurant. Guests can reserve the table that features a special menu designed personally by Executive Chef John Dober and paired with wines chosen by Glenn Hawley. The meal is a minimum of five courses, and provides guests with the unique opportunity of watching the craftsmanship that goes into the preparation of their meal. Lisa says, “I always want to bring guests into the kitchen to show them what an incredibly pristine space it is and how efficient and professional our staff is.” This feature allows guests to see for themselves. In addition to their lunch and dinner menus, Off the Hook features a Happy Hour menu in the bar area that includes many half-price appetizers including Lobster Nachos and fresh Mussels. Their house wines by the glass are also available half off during Happy Hour. The lounge fills up quickly with people stopping on their way home from work for a bite with friends. Since it’s opening last year, the Hawleys have seen their new venture turn into a neighborhood hub where people conduct business, families celebrate events, and friends meet for happy hour. “We want

people to know you can have a fine dining experience in your own neighborhood,” Lisa says. She says people often wonder why they made the switch from their downtown, Mount Washington restaurant. She said they wanted to go in a different direction than their partners at Monterey Bay, and thought it was the perfect time for Pittsburgh to embrace a downtown experience in the suburbs. Lisa and Glenn believe their fine dining restaurant outside of the city will the go-to neighborhood restaurant for foodies, wine-lovers, and anyone who loves a fresh piece of fish. This is a seafood experience that is truly off the hook. Visit www.offthehookfish.com for more information or to book a table. 69

Film and fashion on a frosty winter night, that’s what we got at The Pittsburgh Film Office’s Pre-Oscar Party at J. Verno Studios on Sunday March 2nd, Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield Presents Lights! Glamour! Action! ™. This event is designed to warm up the excitement in anticipation for Oscar night. On this wintry January night the local film industry said thanks to their patrons with martinis inspired by Academy nominated films and local fare from local eateries like Nola, Savoy, Donato’s, The Capital Grille, and Tamari. Politicians like City of Pittsburgh Chief Operations Officer Guy Costa and Allegheny County Chief Executive Rich Fitzgerald, plus Senator Wayne Fontana and Rep. Paul Costa all made their rounds shaking hands and exchanging laughs. This year’s honorary chair is President of Highmark Health Plans, Deb RiceJohnson, who looked stunning alongside the gorgeous Dawn Keezer, PFO’s executive director. This is Highmark’s 4th year as presenting sponsor for the annual high fashion, black-tie event, which is in its 14th year. “The event grows every year,” says Keezer. “We are fortunate that so many people support our local film industry and the work of the Pittsburgh Film Office.” Over 400 people attended the patron party with 800-1,000 expected on March 2nd at Heinz Field.

70

We found quite a few Maniacs among the revelry like Pete Landis and Dr. Akhtar Khan who saluted Maniac nation with a shoutout to publisher April Hubal. Meanwhile, patrons were treated to the talents of PFO board chairman Russ Streiner, who directed movie scenes featuring attendees that will be aired during the main event and awarded with honorary Oscar® awards. This undiscovered movie star eagerly hogged the camera having printed out a scene from Wolf of Wall Street to perform with my husband. We were defending our Best Couple Performance title we won last year with a scene from Pulp Fiction. Owner of Izazzu Salon Spa Serata, Emilio Cornacchione provided makeovers during the evening, pinned my husband Dr. Patrick Filip, as Irving in American Hustle, so the stylists transformed his lion’s mane into a blond combover. If only I could get into Jennifer Lawrence’s sultry white gown and grow six inches, we would’ve nailed it. Izazzu is one of the salons participating in the main fashion show event taking place on March 2nd produced by Tara Reiland and yours truly. Some of the region’s top salons recreate models as famous movie characters. This year the theme will be “Oscars through the Decades”. Harmony Salon, Brett James Salon, Salon Christine, Capristos, Salon Ivy, MCN Salon, Divinity Salon, and Denham & Co. are dazzling attendees this year with authentic and innovative recreations.

MANIAC Q&A

including concealer for men, and while even I’m not sure what makes a concealer gender specific, Ford is clearly knocking on the door of the male psyche and responding to customer desires for better options in the emerging men’s luxury cosmetics market. With prices starting at $49 for a tube of lipstick, this line is not exactly easy on your wallet. But such sophisticated packaging, picturesque names, pigment rich enough to evoke old master paintings, and the reputation of a designer known resoundingly as an “international playboy” (despite a happy family life with partner Richard Buckley)…isn’t this concoction what makes something special? My advice is to find a way to control your impulses and choose just one item to start. Treasure it for the times and keep it displayed in your boudoir to remind yourself of your secret weapon. Pull out that Crimson Noir lipstick or She Wolf eye color palette for the most special events and the night will be yours.

Ask A Sty list: Answers to Your Burning Beauty & Fashion Questions f rom P ro f essiona l S t y l ist, S hannon Youn g

Dear Shannon, I want to invest in luxurious cosmetics for those truly special occasions, but I’m not sure which brand is truly worth the money. I don’t want to just pay for a name. Any advice?—Megan P. Shannon: If anyone can make a fortune packaging sex as a luxury product, it’s Tom Ford. His name gained international recognition in the mid-1990s when he served as creative director at Gucci (and eventually YSL). During his decade-long reign, he brought sexy back by invoking a louche 1970s glamour dripping with slinky dresses and blouses and strutting out plush pantsuits donned as glamorous evening wear. Remember that red velvet tuxedo Gwyneth Paltrow wore to the 1996 VMAs? It was burned onto my covetous little brain at the time but sadly no approximation of “velvet tuxedo” could be made with thrift store finds or budget-friendly Contempo Casuals. Now there’s the mark of luxury—something so one of a 74

Dear Shannon, I recently bought a perfectly classic “Little Black Dress” that I can wear to weddings, cocktail parties, and other events, and I want to find a statement piece to make the simple dress something really special. I’d love some suggestions.—Katie D. Ah, the LBD…a wardrobe item that has been described by many as the secret weapon for any style challenge. It is a versatile dress that will always be en vogue. The secret to the eternal promise of the LBD is in the details, from the accessories to the hair and makeup.

kind, so special, only the original will do. Sorry Walter Benjamin. So, when he launched his cosmetics line in 2011, I knew dear Tom would not disappoint. As expected, the packaging commands attention before the actual product is even tested. Brushed gold and black leather angular cases with the initials “TF” engraved front and center … evocative names like “Vampire Kiss” or “Bruised Plum” lipstick, “Raven” mascara, and “Ravish” blush all paint a dark, moody picture of ambiance and intrigue. The only brand that can top Ford’s sexy name game is Nars cosmetics—that of the “Deep Throat” and “Super Orgasm” fame. The greatest pleasure of all is that the products perform just as well as they look. Rich pigments, luxurious formulations, and beautifully edited selections—the collection is a true glamourpuss heaven. Interestingly, Ford recently added a new men’s grooming and cosmetics collection,

In her beautiful new book, “Decorating in Detail,” interior designer Alexa Hampton captures the current state of style affairs. She suggests, “In an age when everyone can buy the same [items], we may have reached the point where the only things that distinguish us, and [our style], are the details. Today, uniqueness has become the ultimate luxury.” I couldn’t agree more. So how can you make a uniform item like the LBD truly unique and luxurious? Why not choose a clutch that punches up the LBD and lets you shine as a style arbiter? For

some ladies, unique means a piece that can only be had by flying to Paris and spending a month’s salary, while for others (full disclosure: myself included), it’s a vintage piece at an estate sale that costs next to nothing. I found my own favorite vintage clutch this way hidden in an old country consignment shop. I bought it on a whim, knowing only that I was curious enough to give it a whirl. Its classic navy leather and fold-over shape serves as the backdrop to a quirky almost whimsical design with red and bronze beads studding the front and a singular gold and red braid weaves across the top. The bag that didn’t cost me more than a dollar garners compliments and sparks conversations with strangers wherever I go. This being the luxury issue, I couldn’t allow myself to end on such a thrifty note, so why not get your imaginations flowing with something really special, a true investment piece? A Kotur handbag is a classic among classics. The line is known for specializing in clutches and miniaudieres in rich and colorful materials from elaborate brocades to luxe snakeskin. Fiona Kotur launched the line in 2005, and is the sister of Alexandra Kotur (creative director at Town and Country and former style director at Vogue), so great taste and impeccable style clearly runs in the family. A miniaudiere is defined as “a small decorative case for carrying small articles (such as cosmetics or jewelry).” They were traditionally made as small metal cases and debuted in - where else? - France. While Kotur offers a number of remarkable, detailed miniaudieres, it’s her snakeskin clutches that really stand out and last the test of time. With a price range from $200 for sale pieces to upwards of $1,200 for miniaudieres shaped like the Chrysler Building, perhaps you owe yourself a little piece of luxury.

tagline is not catchy or flashy, but what it states is not surprising at all. Designed by “hair maestro” Oribe (pronounced Or-bay), the line is packaged in deep, rich jewel tones with delicate gold font, evocative of some delight you might find on the dressing table of a femme fatale like Dita Von Teese. The products range from cleansers to conditioners to styling treatments, and they just launched new extra-large sizes for anyone who is so hooked they have to buy in bulk. When I received samples of the Shampoo and Conditioner for Beautiful Color, I tried them not expecting anything out of the ordinary. To my astonishment, what I found was hair so soft, so naturally and gorgeously waved, and full of healthy shine. My hair looked salon-produced, when all I’d done was my usual lazy routine of wash and air dry. A product that can produce the salon touch from home is nothing short of amazing. For even more indulgence, try their Gold Pomade, a styling product that distributes “high-brilliance gold minerals” to your sleek do. Now there’s a luxury to which I can only respond, “Yes, please!” To ask more questions and to see her styling firsthand, visit Shannon Young’s website, www.shannonyoungpgh.com

Dear Shannon, I want to purchase hair products that give me that “wow” factor. I want something special to make my hair look and feel soft and healthy. What do you recommend?—Lauren K. Oribe brand hair care is described simply as, “Award-Winning Hair Products.” The 75

She makes every effort to educate her customers on the area, amenities, and pricing of the home so people feel comfortable and confident in the commitment of ownership. Billmann consistently receives perfect scores on her Zillow reviews, and her clients are particularly grateful for her ability to “stage” their home for expeditious sale. Staging is an important part of home selling, and helps make the property ready to find a perfect new owner. Zita provides this service free of charge, and assures clients that it helps allow prospective buyers the ability to see themselves in the new location. Zita says she “absolutely loves” real estate, and it is that enthusiasm that helps make her clients feel like they’re working with her to make their dreams a reality. That’s what she says she wants to be your “real estate agent for life.”

For people looking to buy and sell real estate in the Pittsburgh area, it is easy to see why Brian Teyssier (BrianSellsPittsburgh) would be their dream agent. After becoming a licensed realtor in 2006, BrianSellsPittsburgh quickly became a multi-million dollar producer. He is proud to be working with RE/MAX, who statistically sells more real estate than any other company, and is the only international broker who has twice won coveted JD Power and Associates awards. Brian says he represents people who are moving into/out of the city, first time home buyers and sellers, investors and new construction clients. Brian is the most positively reviewed realtor in Pittsburgh on Zillow.com, which speaks to his commitment to the best service possible.
