Foreword Youngstown has a great history of entrepreneurism. It’s a history that we treasure, celebrate, and work to preserve in many ways. But that’s not what ICONS of Youngstown is about. Eighteen months ago, I realized that it’s past time to recognize and celebrate what’s happening — and who’s making it happen — in Youngstown today. It’s time to shine a spotlight on the visionary, game-changing entrepreneurs who make our region a vibrant, fascinating, and exciting place to live and work. It has been a remarkable and humbling experience to discover each and every one of these businesses and the people behind them. Their stories are truly inspiring. I’ve had the pleasure of learning how they got started, the risks they’ve taken, the challenges they’ve overcome — whether starting from scratch or reimagining a generations-old family business. And I love having this opportunity to play a part in celebrating the wins and telling these stories. But more than a book, ICONS of Youngstown will be a year-long celebration through our blog, social media and ongoing partnering events with many of the businesses you’ll see here. As a completely new concept to the Youngstown Region, I am grateful for the people who have embraced this idea and given the ICONS of Youngstown team the opportunity to share their journeys. Sometimes personal tragedy can give life to something beautiful. Laurie opened Orange Avocado in 2016 when her father was diagnosed with cancer. Laurie, who had experience with juicing at her family’s Aladdin’s restaurant, began concocting blends to provide her dad with the nutrition he needed.
