While most 16-year olds were watching their favorite shows, Derrick was watching surgeries. After Hurricane Katrina, Dr. Ruiz came to Pittsburgh with her pets to rebuild her life and continue to practice veterinary medicine. With a Bachelor’s degree in biology from Florida International University, and a doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine, she had been in New Orleans for a year, interning at Southeast Veterinary Specialists and training in emergency care, internal medicine, surgery and dermatology.
