Beach Museum celebrates 20 years

The K-State ‘Family’ is a prevalent theme throughout the community. A terrific exemplification is the Marianna Kistler Beach Museum of Art. The museum itself is a splendid attraction on the K-State campus and holds a significant spot among Manhattan’s cultural offerings as the museum celebrates 20 years this month. The lead fundraising gift and subsequent naming rights was a 50th wedding anniversary gift from Ross Beach to his wife. Private funds were raised to build the original, five-gallery, 26,000square foot museum located nearby McCain Auditorium on the southeast corner of campus, where Ross and Marianna Kistler shared their first kiss.

Visitors are invited to join the celebration from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Oct. 9 for open house and community-wide festivities.

Nearly a decade ago, the Mary and Morgan Jarvis wing added three more exhibition galleries, more storage and work space. The museum's collection – the university collection -- has grown to 7,000 pieces of art from just more than 1,000 pieces when it opened. The collections focus on Kansas and regional art.

Civil War era drawings from the Becker Collection are currently on display through December, and “You Gotta Have Art” will be unveiled as part of the 20th anniversary. Annual attendance at Beach Museum exceeds 30,000 visitors.
