The Distributive Education Clubs of America (DECA) is a career and technical student organization that prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs in marketing, finance, hospitality and management in high school and colleges around the globe. The Kansas DECA organization is seeking volunteers and professionals to judge its March 2 and 3 state-level competition. Volunteers will be asked for daylong assistance (7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.) at the K-State Student Union. If your schedule only allows a smaller portion of time that can be accommodated. The 5th Annual Wildcat Ranch Rodeo is Feb. 7 and 8 at Weber Area. The event includes; double doctoring, mugging, trailer loading and wild cow milking. Be there when they crown the 2020 Miss Rodeo K-State on February 8 at the Weber Arena. This competition begins with a horsemanship test along with interviews, speeches and modeling. The pageant has a rich history with winners dating back as far as 1948. Contestants go on to compete in the Miss Rodeo Kansas competition. Feb. 14 to16 is the Kansas State University Rodeo. Visit the Wild Side of Manhattan Bundle up and get ready for some outdoor activities in Manhattan. The Flint Hills is a unique environment that provides great opportunities for learning and appreciation for the wildlife. Assisted Squirrel Hunt, Feb 15. 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. by Kansas Wildlife Parks and Tourism at Tuttle Creek State Park Tuttle Creek State Park is hosting this free event to help bring the community to the outdoors. Pre-register for a guided assisted squirrel hunt. It will be an easy way to learn how to hunt. Guides and firearms will be provided if needed. After the hunt there will be squirrel cleaning and outdoor cooking. Firearms will be sighted in at Fancy Creek Range. Lunch will be served at Wee Bear Lodge. There is no cost for this event, pre-register by calling 785-539-7941. This family-oriented hunt with one to three hunters assigned to each guide is a great way to introduce your family to this outdoor activity.
Hibbard Appointed for Governor’s Council for Travel and Tourism Karen Hibbard of the Manhattan Area Chamber of Commerce was appointed to the Governor’s Council for Travel and Tourism. The council advises on development of new tourist attractions in Kansas and on the expansion of existing tourist attractions. “It’s clear that Hibbard has the initiative to be an effective member of the Council,” Governor Kelly said. “Her experience in tourism will help keep our state on the right track.” Karen Hibbard joined the Manhattan Area Chamber of Commerce in 1997 serving as Convention Sales Manager. In 2005 she was promoted to Director of the Convention and Visitors Bureau. Hibbard holds a degree in Business Administration from Ft. Hays State University. During her time with the Chamber she has been part of many initiatives contributing to the growth surrounding the Manhattan Area, including being a founding member of the Flint Hills Tourism Coalition. Hibbard continues to serve as a voice on several tourism boards both locally and statewide, most recently representing tourism on the Kansas State Fair Board.
Wildlife on Screen Wild and Scenic Film Festival, Feb. 25, 7 p.m., K-State Student Union Friends of the Kaw Announces the Wild & Scenic Film Festival for the 11th Year Anniversary. The Wild & Scenic Film Festival was started by the watershed advocacy group, the South Yuba River Citizens League (SYRCL), in 2003. The film festival has evolved into the largest environmental film festival in the nation. This is a nationwide tour to over 140 cities. Friends of the Kaw is excited to share this film series with our community. This festival benefits Friends of the Kaw and all proceeds from the event will benefit
Sunflower showdown Feb 29 at K-State The Dillon's Sunflower Showdown, where the K-State Wildcats take on the KU Jayhawks happens February 29 at 12:30 p.m. at Bramlage Coliseum in Manhattan. The Sunflower Showdown has a long history of bringing competition between the two schools. This competition dates back to 1902 when K-State and KU football teams played against one another for the first time, and in 1907 men's basketball competed.
