Discover Local History

Flint Hills FORCES II: Our Town, Our Fort, Our University is now open at the Flint Hills Discovery Center. This temporary exhibit will be available from September 27, 2014 to February 1, 2015. It explores the time between 1917 and 1963 when Manhattan, Ft. Riley and Kansas State University joined into one community and presented many growth opportunities for the local and regional area.

This immersive exhibit will allow visitors to see themselves in this time frame by experiencing soldier training for trench warfare during WWI, discovering the Roaring Twenties at the Wareham Hotel, understanding the trying times of the Great Depression, and observing family life around the television in a 1950’s Manhattan living room. Another fun temporary exhibit that will appeal to children ages 3-8 is Animal Secrets. This exhibit will be open from September 27, 2014 to January 14, 2015. Ever wonder where a chipmunk sleeps

or what an eagle feeds its young? Animal Secrets will answer all of these questions and give families the opportunity to explore hidden habitats and secret lives of forest animals. Children can discover nature from an animal’s viewpoint by experiencing this interactive, hands-on exhibit. They will be able to play with animals in realistic habitats, see the sights of the meadow, pretend to be a forest animal, explore a cave environment and investigate specimens from the natural world.

The Flint Hills Discovery Center celebrates the Flint Hills through an engaging and educational atmosphere. With 35,000 square feet of space dedicated to informing visitors about the unique, rare tallgrass prairie, the FHDC is the perfect place to explore the intriguing history surrounding The Little Apple®. Manhattan is proud to be home to this amazing tribute! The Flint Hills Discovery Center is open Monday-
