Celebrate Fall

Join Prairiewood Retreat at the Blue Sage Barn on Thursday, October 25 from 6-10:00 pm for the Harvest Moon Dance! This celebration of fall in the Flint Hills kicks off with dinner, available from 6-8:00 pm. It’s a Chuck Wagon Meal with trimmings provided by Cox Bros BBQ. Guests are invited to explore the property, sit around the campfire, roast marshmallows, listen to Dave Zerfas play cowboy guitar and enjoy a beautiful evening. Tickets are $50 per person on a first come first served basis. All events plus 2 free drinks at the cash bar are included in ticket price. It’s Fall Festival Time with the Lazy T Ranch - every Saturday and Sunday in October, Ron and Chris Wilson invite you to attend their Fall Festival, full of pumpkins, hay rack and pony rides, a Flint Hills fun slide and more! The Monster Splash is Here!

K-State Orchestra Performs

Dr. David Littrell will conduct the K-State Orchestra on Tuesday, October 16 at 7:30 pm.

Concerts are held in McCain Auditorium, and the October performance will include movements from Hindemith and Brahams. Call 785-532-3804 with questions.

McCain Performance Series: October

Oct 5: Bill Engvall performs two shows! The famous comedian from the Blue Collar Comedy Tour will leave a stich in your side. Catch him at 7:00 pm and again at 9:00 pm at McCain.

Oct 11: The National Circus of the People’s Republic of China, “Cirque Chinois” is one of the oldest running circuses from Bejing. Their acrobatics are stunning, to say the least, and this is a show you won’t want to miss!

It starts at 7:30 pm.

Oct 19: Dr. John and the Blind Boys of Alabama take the stage at 7:30 pm with their show, “Spirituals to Funk.” This is a firsttime partnership between two musical legacies that explores connections between jazz, blues and gospel.

It’s the Manhattan Marlin’s home meet and all swimmers are expected to participate! Registration deadline is Oct. 5, and the event is Oct. 20-21. Go cheer on your favorite Marlin!

Basketball Begins

We will see just the beginning of basketball season at the end of this month! K-State Men’s basketball plays their season opener vs. Washburn at Bramlage Coliseum on Oct. 30. Time TBA. Their next game will be vs. Emporia State, also at Bramlage Coliseum and time TBA. The K-State Women’s basketball team opens Nov. 1 vs. Fort Hays State at Bramlage Coliseum, time TBA. Their second game will be vs. Washburn on Nov. 5 at Bramlage. Time TBA. www.kstatesports.com.

Oct 24-26: Nichols Hall will host Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice. These actors from the London Stage will move you through love, betrayal, compassion, anger and everything in between. Showtimes are 7:30 pm Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

First Governor’s Water Conference to be held in Manhattan The Kansas Water Office is excited to announce the first Governor’s Water Conference to be held Tues., Oct. 30 and Wed., Oct. 31, 2012 at the Hilton Garden Inn & Manhattan Conference Center.

The Governor’s Conference on the Future of Water in Kansas will highlight the latest policy and research developments of water issues in Kansas.

The conference topics include: • New ideas to conserve and extend the Ogallala Aquifer • An evaluation of Kansas’ water infrastructure • Opportunities to improve Kansas’ water quality • Meeting water demands for energy and agriculture

“Legislators, state, federal, city and county officials, organizations and citizens who share an interest in our state’s water resources are encouraged to attend,” said Tracy Streeter Kansas Water Office Director: “With recordbreaking drought the last two years as well as a record flood last year, there is no better time to focus attention to Kansas’ water needs.”

Registration is now available online at www.kwo.org. Registration deadline is October 15. Conference details, brochure, speakers and sponsors can be found online as well.

Sunset Zoo Updates

Sunset Zoo visiting hours are about to adjust for the colder weather.

After Oct. 31 hours will be noon5 until March. The Zoo is open 360 days a year.

Also, SPOOKtacular is coming up! It’s everyone’s favorite holiday at the zoo- grab the kiddos in their costumes and get ready for some serious trick or treating! The event is Oct. 20-21, from noon-4:30 pm. There will be fun activities and ghosty ghouls on every corner. Say hello to all the local businesses and non-profits that sponsor candy booths while you’re there!

Go See It!

Why:

Another Go See It! lecture is coming up at the Flint Hills Discovery Center! Join Michael Stubbs as he presents on the Mt. Mitchell Heritage Prairie. This lecture is free and open to the public. Find them in the FHDC classroom on the second floor, Thursday, Sept. 20 at 7:00 pm.

This exhibit showcases the history of Fort Riley, Manhattan, and K-State and their collaborative growth.

Area history is explored from 1853-1917 with some very rare, and unique pieces found in the exhibit.

Time to Promenade

It’s the 8th annual Promenade on Poyntz! Only 250 tickets will be sold, so grab yours while you can.

This event features downtown businesses as “stops” along the Promenade Path for wine and food sampling.

Flint Hills Discovery Center - FORCES

What: The new temporary exhibit at the FHDC Where: The second floor, temporary exhibit gallery When: Open now through January, 2013 Who: Efforts were coordinated by the FHDC staff; the Conservation Division, DPW, Fort Riley; the U.S. Calvary Museum, Fort Riley; The Riley County Historical Museum; Historic Costume and Textile Museum of K-State; and the Morse Department of Special Collections, K-State Libraries.

Homecoming 2012

It’s homecoming week for K-State!

This funfilled week is always packed with activities for students and alumni as well as the community. There are favorites that are brought back year over year and new exciting events to look forward to! This year, Homecoming week is Oct. 21-27, and activities include Pant the Chant in Bramlage Coliseum, Paint the ‘Ville Contest in Aggieville, and a Homecoming Tailgate in Cat Town.

Trick or Treat!

• Aggieville: a traffic-free Moro street invites ghosts and ghouls to come enjoy trick or treating in Aggieville at 3:00 pm on October 26. This is also the day of K-State’s Homecoming Parade, so be ready for fun at 5:00 pm!

• Manhattan Town Center: the annual “Boo Party” runs from 5:307:30 pm inside the mall! It’s climate controlled, well-lit and the perfect place to enjoy a little Halloween family fun! Children 12 and under are invited to participate in the trick-ortreating festivities- and if you bring a can of food for the Flint Hills Breadbasket, you get a free trick-ortreat bag while supplies last!

Wrap It Up is Back!

The annual holiday hot spot for gifts is back on October 25, for Manhattan Arts Center members only, and officially on the 26th for a public reception. Hours are from 5:30-8 pm for both nights. The exhibit will run through Monday, December 24.

Sponsored by Hittle Landscape Architects and David and Karen Seay, the exhibit features local artists from Manhattan and surrounding areas. Many of the items make fabulous holiday gifts, and are changed out as they are purchased- so if you have your eye on something- grab it quick!
