Our first ever Inter-City visit to Missouri in late September was a big hit for the 34 participants from the Manhattan Area Chamber of Commerce and surrounding communities. For our Chamber’s purposes, the Inter-City visit to Columbia had two primary goals: hearing about their

community’s best practices and lessons learned, while also allowing for high-level networking among community leaders. Representatives from the Junction City and Wamego Chambers of Commerce also joined us on this successful first trip.

First Inter-City visit a success Continued from page 1

During our two day visit we had the opportunity to network with over 30 Columbia area business, civic, and elected leaders. One theme we heard many times over was collaboration, and the partnerships that have been developed to work together towards common goals to make Columbia a great place

to live. We were especially interested in how their Parks & Recreation department and Columbia Public Schools partner on many athletic facilities. As our region looks to establish a regional economic development effort, we learned much from their local and regional economic development organizations.

Workforce programs, public art, parking garages, financing for their downtown district, and incubators were other areas we took home plenty of ideas to further explore.

Another area

of special interest was the unique incentive-based city budget to help improve efficiency in all their city departments.

Participants are now sharing what they learned and we are hopeful that one or two of the ideas we heard can be adapted for our community and region. Finally, the support of the Columbia Chamber Staff helped make our first Inter-City visit a resounding success! We were very impressed by the wonderful welcome we received from Columbia. All the participants are looking forward to our next Inter-City visit to a new community in Fall 2016.

Dare to be Different: 5 Ways to Recreate Your Business for Greater Revenue

Most people come up with an idea, or they have a passion, and they decide to turn it into a business.

The savvy among them create a business plan around their idea or passion. Many get so excited about their venture that they create the product or service first and then try and find the market. This approach is like swimming upstream. It can be done but it’s a lot harder. They easier way is to locate a group of people with a problem and solve for it.

Often finding your target audience first produces a greater return on investment. But if you already have a business, what can you do? You can reinvent it. The process is not as hard as it sounds, but you have to let go and leave your comfort zone to provide a more tailored experience to your customers.

If you have enough profits and enough work, stop reading now. Otherwise, here are a few ways you can recreate your existing business for greater revenue.

Target Your Ideal Customer and Market to Them

This is the hardest jump to make, identifying a target market and forsaking all others. The idea that customization, and drilling down to one or two types of customers, will yield you more customers and not less is a bit unnerving at first. The secret to this work is to ensure that your ideal audience needs you and knows it. If you have to spend a lot of time convincing them of the need, you not only have a marketing campaign on your hands but an educational one as well.

Find a segment that has a problem you can help with.

Then market to them by showing how your service or product solves their problem. Don’t worry that you’re not solving everyone else’s problem. If you clearly and adequately solve someone’s problem, they’ll be back, and they’ll bring their friends.

Transform Your Social Media

Now that you have a target market, find out where they are on social and show up. Don’t worry about other platforms.

If they’re not there, no reason for you to be either. This also means posting the kinds of posts they are interested in, about subjects that appeal to them.

Don’t be vanilla. Adopt a tone that appeals to your ideal demographic as well. If you don’t know how to do that, think about hiring your ideal customer (from a demographic perspective) to do it for you.

Create Content that Answers Their Questions

You know their pain point. Talk to it.

Write about it directly, then tackle related issues as well. Marcus Sheridan was the co-owner of River Pools, which installed fiberglass pools. He recognized that most people don’t wake up one morning, call a pool company, and ask them to start digging in the afternoon.

There’s a lot of research someone is going to conduct before they hand over $30,000. Because of this he began compiling all the questions he received from potential customers and created content out of them. He built a resource library.

Not only was it loved by his customers, but Google took a fancy to it too. Soon he was ranking above all of his competi-

tion. All because he listened to potential customers and gave them what they needed to make an informed decision.

Stand Out

Maybe you’re thinking that your customers don’t need any educating. Maybe you run a boutique. I’d argue there’s still content that could be effective for you like explaining the difference between a “wild” pearl and one that was cultivated, but there are other ways to stand out. Gift wrap your products, include a “thank you” message, or place an extra goodie or sample in the bag. These small gifts are a wonderful way to remain fresh in your customer’s mind.

Give Them What They Want

This is perhaps one of the boldest things you can do once you decide on a target market. Now, think about giving your audience what they want, even if it changes your business model. It doesn’t have to be painful for you and may actually introduce new economies of scale. For instance, there’s a pizza place in Berkeley called the Cheeseboard Pizza Collective.

They make one type of pizza every day, and no, that’s not a typo. One. As in singular, for $20. People line up around the block to await a slice of the Co-op’s specialty pizza and because the place is small, they take their slice outside and consume it to the tunes of one of the local bands playing that evening. These “picnickers” are a silent, but powerful, testimonial for the co-op. The co-op realized their vegetarian clientele didn’t want variety as much as they craved farmfresh gourmet. It’s difficult to provide farm-fresh in a variety of options, so the restaurant looks at the freshest ingredients available at that time and creates a pizza based on that. Doing so, has made them the talk of the town.

Veterans Day Parade On Nov. 11, Americans gather to honor the service of this country’s soldiers and veterans on occasion of the 97th Veterans Day observance, with a parade along Poyntz Avenue to begin at 9:30 a.m. The significance of this date was the cessation of hostilities that ended World War I. Congress made Nov. 11 an official holiday in June 1926.

Nearly 50 groups will participate in this year’s parade, including city commissioners and 2,000 children from more than local 15 school groups including the Riley County and Rock Creek high school marching bands. The parade route begins at Manhattan Town Center and continues to City Park, with soldiers from the 1st Infantry Division and 1st Infantry Division Band.

The military parade procession pauses for a salute at the Riley County Armed Forces Memorial, where bricks are placed before both Memorial Day and Veterans Day. The cost of a brick is $75, and may be purchased at the Riley County clerk’s office.

Military memorabilia is on display in downtown store fronts, and the Senior Center (open 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.) at 412 Leavenworth also features more military displays. A panel display at Town Center Mall will depict 10 major military operations.

The Manhattan Area Chamber of Commerce is honored to maintain an ongoing relationship

specifically with Fort Riley and the military community. The Chamber Military Relations Committee meets 10 times annually, and meetings are open to the public. The MRC vows to increase awareness of the Fort Riley community's importance to Manhattan, and to support soldiers and families by showcasing a military-inclusive community.

Conventions showing bolster city revenues

Hotel accommodations have grown to almost 1,500 rooms, and there are more enticing attractions that have allowed Manhattan to gather momentum as Manhattan continues to be an attraction for conferences. The Convention and Visitors Bureau has hosted more than 200 groups to account for 10,000 room nights through 10 months (October 2015).

The resulting economic impact for Manhattan is $15 million spent on lodging, in restaurants, shopping and attractions.

Two more gatherings have special significance for the prominence of groups to visit Manhattan. The Governor’s Water Conference, will meet Nov. 19-20 at Manhattan Conference Center/ Hilton Garden Inn with 500 people scheduled to attend this event.

Estimated economic impact of this conference is $392,500.

Flint Hills Discovery Center Masters

The Flint Hills Discovery Center Masters exhibit has opened to rave reviews, and continues through midJanuary with paintings and sculptures that feature Flint Hills’ landscapes. Featured with the exhibit are multiple interactive workshops, and the next session Nov. 7 includes featured Masters artist Susan Rose. The program, “Nature through an artist’s eyes,” will include input from K-State professor of park management and conservation Ted Cable. You’ll get to practice observation techniques to be more thoroughly inspired by the frequent nature encounters we all experience. Bring binoculars, cameras and be prepared for a few hours in nature after meeting at the Konza Prairie Station nature trail kiosk.

This will be the fourth consecutive year for the Kansas Water Office to hold its statewide Future of Water conservation discussion over two days in Manhattan. Major sponsors for this event include Black & Veatch and Burns & McDonnell engineering companies, and Great Lakes Dredge & Dock.

Recently, the Petfood Innovation Workshop and Pet Food Experience were hosted by K-State’s Pet Food Program on campus.

These meetings brought top experts in the pet food industry, and were an extension of the Kansas City Pet Food Forum.

Festival of Lights kicks off holiday season

Blue Earth Plaza will be the picturesque holiday setting for the third annual MHK Festival of Lights. Enjoy the festivities as The Little Apple® downtown is bedazzled with holiday lights. The Festival tree will stand outside the Flint Hill Discovery Center as the evening’s events begin at 7 p.m. Nov. 27, building to the cavalcade of color with the tree lighting ceremony ushered along with the assistance of none other than Santa Claus! Carriage rides, lights synchronized to holiday music and the tallest holiday tree in Kansas. Come celebrate a growing tradition in Manhattan’s Blue Earth Plaza.

Get a spark from the Little Apple Glow Paddle

Outdoor activities are on the wane as the calendar flips to November. The Manhattan Convention and Visitors Bureau has teamed with Kansas Tourism for about an hour of enjoyment with the Little Apple Glow Paddle on the Kansas River.

Bring your own canoe or kayak or rent one and enjoy the pleasurable float. When

you join the fun, you’ll park at Linear Park/Trail Head (Highway 24 bridge over the Big Blue River). A bus will transport paddlers to Fairmont Park, and the paddle will begin on the Kansas River and continue onto the Big Blue River. Meet at 5 p.m. Nov. 7, and conclude a peaceful evening with s'mores and stories by the campfire.

The Manhattan Convention and Visitors Bureau continues to introduce new ideas and components to provide attractions for visitors and additional services for groups that select our lodging sites to hold meetings in Manhattan. The newest introduction is exciting from the viewpoint of every day technology supplements.

The InFuse Charging Station by InCharged allows the CVB to promote its message to any organization via kiosk mounted atop the charging stand. Additionally, the charging station will present Visit Manhattan branding, CVB logos and audio/video playback. The station itself features 5 Micro USB, 5 Apple Lightning, 1 Apple Legacy (30-pin), and 1 open USB port. The charging station can accommodate virtually any phone.

Kansas Tourism Conference

The Manhattan Convention and Visitors Bureau attends events like the Kansas Tourism Conference in Wichita to learn continued best industry practices, network with fellow professionals and to keep abreast of nationwide trends in the travel industry.

This year’s conference in was held in Wichita is Oct. 2628, and the Manhattan CVB showcased Manhattan as a table sponsor at the annual banquet. The Travel Industry Association of Kansas presents the annual conference in part to provide a forum for interaction among all sectors of the travel industry. The promotion of Manhattan tourism is of vital importance, and registers $1.8 million annually to the City of Manhattan.

Military Update

October is the Military Relations Committee’s (MRC) busy season and this October proved just as busy as ever! The month began with the MRC Luncheon featuring K-State professors of Military and Aerospace Studies, Army LTC Ryan Miedema and Air Force Lt. Col Shawnn Martin, presenting the history and programming of the Reserve Officer Training Program at Kansas State The Fort Riley-Central Kansas Delegation at AUSA University.

Later that week members of the Fort Riley-Central Kansas Chapter of the Association of the United States Army (AUSA) left Manhattan for Washington DC to attend AUSA Annual Meeting.

Attendees cheered on the 1st Infantry Division and Fort Riley and K-State ROTC Army Ten Miler Teams; heard Army Secretary John McHugh speak; had meetings at the offices of our Kansas Congressional delegation: Senators Moran and Roberts and Congressmen Huelskamp and Pompeo; and socialized with current and former leaders of Fort COL Tom Bolen takes command of the DIVARTY Brigade. The 1st Infantry Division reactivated the 1st Infantry Division Artillery Brigade, also known as DIVARTY, on Oct. 16 at Fort Riley. The ceremony included ceremonial cannon, salute battery, the 1ID Band and the Commanding General’s Mounted Color Guard. Taking command of the new division artilleries is COL Tom Bolen, who has worked with a small group of soldiers since August to stand up the new brigade size element. The Big Red One's DIVARTY was inactivated 10 years ago in Germany, and the recent activation signified the Army's effort to bring brigade headquarters-sized units back to its 10 divisions. A DIVARTY effectively synchronizes joint fires across their division and standardizes artillery training.

The MRC also sponsored K-State’s fall Political, Diplomatic and Military Lecture Series speaker, Francis Gary Powers, Jr., speaking on, “The U-2 Incident and the Cold War.” A timely lecture with the recent release of the Steven Spielberg movie Bridge of Spies the movie details the negotiations to get CIA operative Francis Gary Powers released from Soviet captivity after his U-2 spy plane was shot down over the former Soviet Union in 1960. Gary Powers, Jr. gave a personal and detailed account of his father’s experiences and brought the political tensions and gamesmanship of the 1960’s Cold War era to life for a packed house at the K-State Alumni Center.

AZA Grants Accreditation to Sunset Zoo The Association of Zoos & Aquariums (AZA) announced that the Sunset Zoo in Manhattan, KS was granted accreditation by AZA’s independent Accreditation Commission.

“When visitors come to Sunset Zoo, they can be assured that they are supporting a facility that is dedicated to the care and conservation of wildlife, deepening families’ connection to nature and building the next generation of conservationists,” said AZA President and CEO Jim Maddy.

“By achieving AZA accreditation, Sunset Zoo meets the highest standards in animal care and ranks among the world’s best zoos and aquariums.”

To be accredited, the Sunset Zoo underwent a thorough review to ensure it has and will continue to meet rising standards, which include animal care, veterinary programs, conservation, education, and safety.

AZA requires zoos and aquariums to successfully complete this rigorous accreditation process every five years in order to be members of the Association.

LongHorn, Olive Garden raises funds for Breadbasket LongHorn Steakhouse and Olive Garden recently hosted a Campfire Breakfast, silent auction and car wash charity event to benefit Flint Hills Breadbasket.

The event raised $1,605 for the local food bank. All proceeds went towards Flint Hills Breadbasket's mission to minimize hunger and poverty through the distribution of available food and to nurture projects that will help alleviate hunger and poverty.

National Association of Home Builders, Cup Award and Grand Awards Flint Hills Area Builders Association Executive Officer Brad Hartenstein, was recognized in Pittsburgh, Pa recently as a finalist for the National Association of Home Builders - Membership Cup Award. Selection criteria was based on: • Achieving the purpose and goal of the annual membership plan • Integration of the plan into association-wide activities • Member-wide involvement • Short-term and multi-year membership development initiatives • Balanced approach to recruitment and retention efforts • Promotion of HBA core benefits/services and of the 3-in-1 membership

In addition to being a finalist for the NAHB Membership Cup, the Flint Hills Area Builders Association has won two NAHB Grand Awards for Numerical Increase and Percentage Increase for membership efforts in 2014. The association brought in a higher number and a greater percentage of new members than any other association in their respective group nationally!

These membership awards are given each year to honor one Home Builders Association from each group size with the greatest increase in membership over the previous year and the highest year-end percentage growth in membership. In recognition of these achievements, each winning association is awarded personalized plaques, as well as acknowledgment throughout the year by NAHB for their accomplishments.

Kellstrom Pharmacy Back in the mid-60s, times were much slower and a drug store was the focal point and center of attention for many towns right alongside the malt shop. Medicinal prescriptions were part of the norm. But drug stores in those days were also candy stores, soda fountains, ice cream shops, newsstands … a public gathering space. Kinda like Facebook, only not on a phone ignoring human contact.

That was the business Bill Kellstrom stepped into when Forrest Forrester tossed him the keys to the Palace Drug Company and said it’s all yours in 1965. And 50 years later, William’s son John operates the Palace Drug Company (which operates as Kellstrom Pharmacy).

John Kellstrom has seen the change in pharmaceuticals where it’s less a congenial neighborhood drug store and soda fountain than a reportto-the-insurance-company, heavily-regulated bureaucracy.

It simply goes with the territory in an ever-changing business landscape.

Bill Kellstrom was part of the Palace Jazz Band that included Larry Weigel as emcee, on trombone and vocals, Kellstrom on trumpet along with Matt Betton, Phil Hewett and others. Kellstrom was born in Minnesota, lived in Detroit and wound up in

Manhattan after his service in the Army, and met his wife, Martha, who assisted with the drug store.

“Over many years you work up relationships with families and know their kids,” Bill Kellstrom said. “Customers were pretty loyal. The drug store was fun because we had an ice cream fountain and people would come in and get food, and students always had fun and were well-behaved.”

Via Christi Hospital Mercy Regional concluded a 20-year run of service to the Manhattan community in April when the health center officially became Via Christi Hospital, a member of the Ascension network of hospitals. The hospital’s focus is on service to Riley, Geary and Pottawatomie county citizens, but the overall service area is a seven-county reach. To Via Christi senior administrator John Broberg, the most essential message to the entire coverage area is first-rate health care. “We recognize that we’re the safety net for the community. We’re here 24/7 for the patients that we serve.”

Via Christi’s association with the Ascension network pro-

vides the hospital with access to additional resources to offer its patients, and consultation with a large professional network on best practices.

Part of that access means a well-rounded focus on overall health. Information about nutrition and fitness in the community is one of the biggest requests. Preventive care is slowing becoming a staple of the health industry, and is the byproduct of ongoing community education.

Increased access to high-quality health care has been the biggest asset of the Affordable Care Act, in Broberg’s estimation.

“I’ve been in health care a long time,” says Broberg in describing a community a needs assessment that the hospital staff references for guidance.

“It is about the population’s health and how we keep them healthy; we’re really more focused on keeping them out of the hospital and keeping them healthy.”
