Several food and beverage stations were set up around the building for some great mingling to approximately 200 guests at the April Business After Hours held at Meadowlark Hills. One of the assisted living apartments was open for guests to view! The new women’s basketball coach, Jeff Mittie, was in attendance and said a few words to the crowd at the end of the evening.

Meadowlark Hills gave away two beautiful baskets full of goodies and they went to Criss Mayfield and Dean Taylor.

Kayla Johnson with Green Advisors received $50 in Little Apple Dollars and Rose Chapman with Eagle Communications won a year pass to Business After Hours.

National Travel and Tourism Week

May 3-11th is National Travel and Tourism week! There’s so much to celebrate…

The week is annually recognized the first full week in May. Manhattan celebrates locally with our 6th Annual Get Around 2 It! hosted May 1st at Blue Earth Plaza. Additionally, the Kansas Sampler Foundation features a two day festival each year known as the Kansas Sampler Festival in celebration of all things travel and tourism in rural communities.

According to UStravel.org, the United States is just shy of 8 billion jobs are related to the travel indus-

try. 14.9 million jobs are supported by the travel industry. That’s one in nine U.S. jobs; and each U.S. household would owe $1,093 more in taxes without the revenue generated by travel and tourism.

Arts in the Park

The 2014 Arts in the Park schedule is out. The season kicks off with two shows in May to start the summer off right. Join the MHS Pops Choir and the Thundering Cats Big Band at 8:00 p.m. on May 23rd. Blues/Classic Rock band Briar will play at 8:00 p.m. on May 30th.

Splish Splash

The Manhattan City Park splash park is set to bring delight and laughter to young and old by the end of May! There is no admission to the splash park, just hours of entertainment for the whole family. The splash park is adjacent to the playground in the southeast corner of City Park.

10 a.m. Camping is available for those who want to make a weekend of it, and interested persons can register now. Find the online form through www.bigpoppibikes.com/dirtylittlesecret.

This event is operated under a USA Cycling event permit and is held rain or shine. CPSC approved helmet is required.

Youth Fishing Clinic

It’s the 20th annual Fishing Clinic event in Anneberg Park!

Applications for this clinic on Saturday, June 7 are available for all youth ages 8-12 at all elementary schools in Manhattan, Wal Mart, Boys and Girls Club, Tuttle Creek Outfitters, Wildlife and Parks office, Parks and Rec office, Derick’s Bait and Tackle and the Douglas Center. The event is free, but youths must be registered to participate. Only youths who have not previously attended clinics are allowed to participate.

Walking Among Flowers

On June 6th there is an education session at Anthony Middle School at 7 p.m. The event on June 7th begins at 9 a.m. At least one parent is required to attend both sessions with their youth. Each youth will receive a free rod and reel at Saturday’s event. Bait is provided and the pond is stocked with 700-1,000 channel catfish.

Join the friends of Konza Prairie Sunday June 1st from 6:30-sunset for their annual wildflower walk! This two-mile guided hike takes guests through the Butterfly Hill Trail at the peak of wildflower season. Visitors are likely to see more than 50 species of native tallgrass prairie plants in bloom along the trail.

Reservations are not required. Friends of Konza Prairie members and their immediate family have no charge. Non-members are $10/person and $2/child under 12.

Meet Kevin!

Join us in welcoming to the CVB, Kevin Gargot. Kevin is serving as the CVB intern through October. He is completing his last year of his master’s program in Promotion of Tourism and Touristic projects management at the University Blaise Pascal, Clermont-Ferrand, France. Kevin is completing his Masters with Kansas State University, thanks to an exchange program Kansas State has with the University Blaise. His experience in Kansas has helped him to improve his understanding of the American culture and expectations concerning tourism and leisure travel in general.

Kevin will be conducting research on groups to meet in Manhattan as well as assisting with special events that bring visitors to the Manhattan area.

“I am so pleased to be part of this team. Three years ago, during my first year at Kansas State University, I fell in love with Manhattan and its community. I discovered that the city of Manhattan, our precious Little Apple, had recently started to work even harder on promoting Manhattan and its area in a more touristic aspect, and not just as a university town. Today, one of the CVB goals is clearly to attract more visitors and share what Manhattan and the Flint Hills area has to offer to new visitors. As a student finishing my Master’s in promotion of tourism and touristic projects management, international wide, I cannot thank the Manhattan Area Chamber of Commerce enough for giving me the opportunity to be part of this team, working on this promising goal. I will do my best during these seven months.”

NEW! Coffee & Conversation: Member/Guest Program

April flew by in a whirlwind! We started with our MRC Lunch featuring Manhattan Mayor John Matta giving a highlight of Manhattan’s accomplishments over the past year in a, “State of the City,” presentation at Fort Riley.

Next MRC members Mark Hatesohl, Linda Weis and Fred Willich were among the over 50 community leaders who attended the First Infantry Division’s Campaign Plan 2020 rollout. Starting at Division Headquarters, three busses took guests to Fort Riley’s Mission Training Center for a presentation of the plan by First Infantry Division Commander, Major General Paul E. Funk. The campaign plan highlights regionalism and the strategic implications for the area. The campaign plan also addresses the future reorganization of the "Big Red One" to accommodate the reduction of forces between 1,200 to 1,700 soldiers on Fort Riley. The visitors to the Training Center also had the opportunity to interact with soldiers currently training at the center and observe and use equipment simulating real-life situations division Soldiers may find themselves in while deployed.

MRC Members also attended the Outstanding Civilian Service Awards Ceremony at the K-State Alumni Center. The third highest civilian award awarded by the Department of Defense was given to four members of the Kansas State University faculty, including MRC Board member Dr. Briana Nelson Goff, particularly for her efforts with the Institute for the Health and Security of Military Families. Congratulations to Dr. Goff and fellow award recipients Athletic Director John Currie; Todd Holmberg, Executive Director McCain Auditorium; and Daryl Youngman, associate professor K-State Libraries.

Small Business Council Update

Different types of sellers have different natural advantages. Internet sellers cut the most labor expenses out of their business models and essentially broker transactions between providers and users for a cut-rate price. Big box chains aggregate real estate and reduce some labor expenses, leaving shoppers largely on their own with purchasing decisions in exchange for a discount. Large companies offer scale and sometimes specialty expertise across broad geographical areas that often cannot float a smaller company serving a more focused geographical footprint.

We spend a lot of time in our Small Business Council talking about initiatives we could implement to educate people about the benefits of doing business with locally owned companies. The question we have been asking ourselves, though, is "are enough of our local businesses worthy of a public call-to-action to support them?"

There are well-defined reasons for consumers to keep their spending dollars in the community, and particularly with locally owned small businesses. These reasons are practical, not philosophical. They will always directly benefit consumers in the long-term. Yet, those of us tackling this topic must, if we are honest, face the fact that any consumer decision is chiefly motivated by whether or not that consumer is perceiving their best total value in that moment, and whether that value is instantly recognizable.

Meaning, local small businesses need to be sure that they really are delivering the best value as a local resource for the products & services they offer.

This cannot be presumptuously assumed 'yes'. If you live in Manhattan and buy anything, ride along vicariously as I challenge my local business owners, myself included, with earning and deserving your decisions to spend with us.

There is no profit in hiding from the fact that information technology has made it easier for anyone in the world to sell to anyone else in the world.

People increasingly buy without boundaries, from simple consumer goods to complex, multi-million dollar, multi-year manufacturing or construction projects. At the end of the day, the one doing the spending will always desire the best result for the lowest possible price -- as they always have and always should.

This is the cornerstone for free marketplaces that maximizes innovation

But small, locally owned businesses have some natural advantages, too.

These include repeated face-to-face interactions that build trust relationships, instant access to laserfocused expertise, and nimble responsiveness to quickly overcoming obstacles in pursuit of a goal.

The direct and instantly-felt benefit of these local advantages for buyers is receiving the optimal balance between a high-quality solution and the fastest possible delivery.

Thus, the question to local business owners is this: Are you providing consistently high-quality, stocking what they need on the shelf, and are you responsive to your customers in ways that out-of-town competitors simply cannot compete with?

No skilled local business owner or manager assumes that they are.

Anyone who assumes it is probably falling short, because those that attract and keep the local population coming to them constantly think about and challenge themselves with how to improve their value propositions in the face of everincreasing out-of-town competition.

Fellow business owners, have we recognized a fundamental shift?

Our primary competition is no longer each other -- our competitive threat comes from those we have never met, from suppliers we may not have even heard of.

Because it is so much more difficult

to compare ourselves to unknown others, we must focus instead on comparing who we are today against who we were yesterday.

Every new challenge presents a new opportunity within it, if we are able to discern it. I believe that the opportunity for locally owned small businesses today is recognizing that anyone who needs to buy something (which is everyone) has increased pressure to get more done and solve problems as quickly as possible while minimizing premature solution failure.

We can work with that!

Our natural advantage is the ability to provide high quality very quickly.

Other types of sellers take more time to engage and wait for the result, place a higher burden of selfeducation upon the buyer, are less responsive throughout the relationship, and treat their customers like data in a report. What we need to do is to stay invested in our relative industries enough to know what the current, best-in-class solutions are to the problems we solve for people, be ready to deliver them "yesterday", and hold our customers' hands through the process, treating them like we want to be treated.

Are we confident we are already there? Unfortunately, not so much.

Many of us have dropped the ball and are focused on the wrong problems. Two things are still true and will never stop being true: 1) if we build it, meaning that we advertise and quickly deliver high quality, "they" will come, and 2) we get what we pay for, meaning people will pay us the higher price that it costs us to quickly deliver uniquely high-quality solutions.

So to my fellow small business owners, take stock today. If we ask consumers to re-evaluate where they spend their dollars, what do we still need to clean up in our own house to prove them right for choosing us?

Session 5 of Leadership Manhattan started off with a tour of the 10th ASOS (the Air Force unit assigned to Fort Riley) at Fort Riley where they heard Lt. Col. Sean Montiero speak on military leadership and then the group witnessed a training simulation and toured the facility. Next the group went on to meet at Kansas Farm Bureau where they learned about how to run for office, tourism in Manhattan and Adaptive Leadership.
