Big Things are Rising in The Little Apple® National Festival of Breads – the nation’s only amateur bread-baking competition – comes to Manhattan for the first time June 20-22. This festival is hosted by the KS Wheat Commission.

The public is invited to attend the events on June 22 at the Hilton Garden Inn and Manhattan Conference Center. A host of activities will be featured including baking demonstrations, a miniature trade show, educational activities for children, free taste samples and more. The Flint Hills Discovery Center will also be on-site to hand out $1 off admission coupons.

At the heart of the event is the live test-baking of each of the eight finalists’ recipes from contestants across the nation.

Contestants, their hometowns and bread recipes include: Ethnic Breads • Judi Berman-Yamada of Portland, Oregon: Red Apple-Golden Cheddar Challah • Elke Roby of Lincoln, Nebraska: German Streusel Cranberry Bagels Rolls • Gloria Piantek of West Lafayette, Indiana: Pennsylvania Dutch Pretzel Slider Buns • Marilyn Blankschien of

Contestants will participate in additional activities, including a Wheat Harvest Tour with a stop on a farm during wheat harvest, where attendees will ride in a combine. Contestants will also visit a working flour mill and a grain elevator, all of which are intended to help them gain a greater understanding of the wheat supply chain. A team of judges will evaluate the finalists’ recipes and finished product to determine the grand prize winner of the 2013 contest; first place receives a cash prize of

$2,500, plus a year’s supply of Fleischmann’s Yeast and an expense-paid trip to the King Arthur Flour Baking Education Center in Norwich, Vermont.

Title sponsors of the National Festival of Breads include the Kansas Wheat Commission, King Arthur Flour and Fleischmann’s Yeast. Proceeds from an on-site bake sale, will benefit “No Kid Hungry,” an effort from the national Share Our Strength program.
