BUSINESS REVIEW LITTLE APPLE

July 2016, Volume 12, Issue 7, www.manhattan.org

Solid vision spurs fundraising momentum

Manhattan has been going places, rapidly, with upward surges during middling statewide economic periods. Economic development has contributed significantly to this long-developing ascension. The heightened perception of Manhattan as an MSA highly worthy to attract commerce has only been enhanced with airport expansion, NBAF site development, Animal Health Corridor business expansion and resounding decade-long success of downtown revitalization.

Significant decision-making has moved Manhattan in the proper direction with solid vision, steady leadership and vital levels of accountability. Advantage Manhattan has played a big part to foster these long-term visions of regional economic prosperity, and displays that the private sector has an integral role to play in guiding economic development. Economic development is largely about emboldening success for the entire community, as Manhattan has experienced what an increased emphasis on development has meant to this community.

“In most cases it’s about partnership across multiple sectors,” Advantage Manhattan Project Director Jerry Hinson said. Advantage Manhattan continues in the evaluation stage of a feasibility study, part of which included

meeting with local stakeholders. Now the sensible move forward is more inclusion among Manhattan community leaders, in order to acquire the level of commitment needed for a substantial capital campaign of this type.

“It’s always more effective to raise money when you’ve got a strong, clearly communicated vision,” Hinson said. “We’ve got strong leadership, and paired with clear measures of accountability, we just need to communicate what that vision is, and deliver on our promises.”

The current campaign will be ongoing through 2016. “It has paid dividends,” Hinson said. “We need to tell our story every chance we get and clearly demonstrate the role the Chamber and its community leaders as a whole have played in it.

“An integral part of that future success will be a well-thought plan that brings the community together for a greater good.”

Lunchmeat & Life Lessons: Sharing a Butcher’s Wisdom

Mary B. Lucas, B.D., relates the story of how she earned her B.D. (“butcher's daughter”) with hours spent at the kitchen table butcher-block, listening to her father's success stories of making deep connections with people. In turn, Mary used her father's advice to find the passion and perseverance to rise to the top of the staffing industry.
