Manhattan Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors has elected Matt Crocker (Chief Executive Officer, SPS Companies Inc.) as 2018 Chair of the Board. Also during the December Board meeting, the board elected Wayne Sloan (President, BHS Construction Inc.) to the Chair-Elect position; Jim Gordon (PartMatt Crocker, 2018 Board Chair ner, Sink, Gordon and Associates) will serve as immediate Past Chair. Larie Schoap (Vice President, ESB Financial) was elected Treasurer, and Jackie Hartman (Chief of Staff, Kansas State University) and Mark Bachamp (Office Manager, Olsson Associates) selected as Vice Chairs.

Congratulations Leadership Manhattan Class of 2018 Chamber leadership roles filled for 2018

The first session of Leadership Manhattan is Jan. 11 and will be held at Meadowlark Hills.

A welcome reception will be held that evening at the Staley School of Leadership Studies at K-State at 5:30 p.m. for the new class and alumni of Future Manhattan and Leadership Manhattan.

A total of five sessions will be culminating in the class graduation scheduled for April 5, 2018 at the Manhattan Country Club.

The mission of Leadership Manhattan is to ensure the vitality of our community by providing a continuous source of motivated leaders who are educated about the region, its challenges and opportunities, as well as trained and inspired to assume leadership roles in the Manhattan area at all levels.

Visit Manhattan introduces the 2018 Visitors Guide, coming soon to hotels and attractions throughout the city. The Manhattan Visitors Guide is a lively community introduction that features all of MHK’s attractions, fabulous restaurants, hotels and interesting stops to attract visitors to Manhattan’s dynamic allure.

Visit Manhattan is in the business of tourism. In 2017 alone, almost 200 conferences attracted nearly 85,000 people to MHK, with economic impact in the range of $64.35 million.

Sweltering experience of Rainforest Adventure next up at Flint Hills Discovery Center An exhibit that has been called the best children’s exhibit of the year – Rainforest Adventure -- is headed to Manhattan and Flint Hills Discovery Center. First, visitors have just one more week to enjoy Duty First, and the enrapturing stories of five soldiers who have served the country in the Big Red One. The BRO exhibit will march away on Jan. 14, so this is your last chance to salute this exhibit devoted to 1st Infantry Division’s extraordinary service.

Rainforest Adventure, with all the sights and sounds of a tropical setting, descends on the discovery center second floor exhibit area with four layers of rainforest. Mixed into the rainforest are tons of interaction for school children, as

rainforest exhibits crawl with plant-animal biodiversity to simulate one of the world’s richest habitation treasures … the world’s endangered rain forests.

Be amazed, bedazzled and bewildered, all in one trip to Flint Hills Discovery Center. Learn more about the rarity of prairie grasslands, and then also vanishing forested, covered regions south of the equator. On the heels of an exciting Duty First exhibit, Rainforest Adventure at Flint Hills Discovery Center opens Jan. 24 and continues through April.

Music & musicals raise curtain for 2018 McCain Performance Series

Super Bowl advertisements are right around the corner.You know what that means? Beer ads that might make you laugh, might make you cry, and guaranteed to make you thirsty. Once football season ends, what’s a beer connoisseur to do with his or her time? Make your own? It’s been done! Homebrewers are plentiful these days, and Kansas has more than its share. In February and March, Manhattan welcomes brewers for a new event to measure home-crafting abilities.

It’s called Mashed in the Middle, with late-February judging (BJCP).

The multi-tiered event continues with public events – Mashed Up – to be held at Manhattan Technical College and GTM Center in City Park. At Mashed Up, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. March 24, learn ways to perfect your craft, with sessions to pair beers with food. Later that day, sample regional microbrews at GTM Center in City Park for Mashed In, a three-hour tasting session. With the presence of Little Apple Brewery plus Tallgrass Brewery, Manhattan is definitely on the map for microbreweries. Fine tune your recipe and join the Mashed in the Middle celebration, coming in March.

Embrace your artistic side in 2018

Things Bright and Beautiful makes its debut at the Strecker Nelson West exhibit premiere at 5 p.m. Jan. 12. Two dozen exhibiting artists will feature art for Things Bright and Beautiful exhibit at the Downtown Manhattan art gallery. Find some of your favorites with a stop at SNW, and stay on point to Marianna Kistler Beach Museum of Art on the Kansas State University campus. At Beach, the museum continues to feature the Fronteras/Frontiers exhibit through April 1. Fidencio Fifield-Perez explores issues of migration and labor as it relates to Midwest border issues. Jan. 24-25 Beach events include ARTSmart January: Clay Play, and I Am Not Your Negro: film screening (5:30 p.m.), respectively.

Fabulous performances dot the 2018 calendar as McCain Performance Series resumes with the raucous Cabaret musical on Jan. 16. The infamous Kit Kat Klub has the 1930s allure of Berlin crowds, and the bawdy cabaret club beckons audiences to leave their troubles outside in the prelude to the political rise of the Nazi party.

Switch gears into the more music-driven show of The Temptations (shown above, Feb. 2) and the original Motown group’s countless hits: My Girl, Ain’t Too Proud to Beg, Get Ready, Just My Imagination and many more. Soul-filled smashes that haven’t aged a bit. Jersey Boys (Feb. 11-12) continues the music momentum through February and croons the story of the 1960s band the Four Seasons with Frankie Valli. Jersey Boys just ended a 12-year Broadway run, and carries musical notes into The Sound of Music (Feb. 25). Get your tickets at k-state.edu/mccain.

• Turn up the volume on good times at Manhattan Arts Center. Classic Irish harmonies are the specialty for award-winning Socks in the Frying Pan (Jan. 12), a music trio from County Clare, Ireland. Kick the month into smooth jazz favorites from K-State music master Wayne Goins and the Jazz All-Stars (Jan. 27). January’s a great month to check out what MAC is all about.

Doc’s Ukulele Orchestra stretches the good-time notes featured into February, followed by Colorado’s The Railsplitters in March. Tune up, and tune in to MAC, Manhattan Arts Center.

Manhattan’s historical roots run deep

Hubert H. Humphrey served as vice president under Lyndon Johnson from 1965-69.

Just after Humphrey’s tenure, he delivered the 11th Landon Lecture Series on Public Issues (Jan. 9, 1970) in Manhattan. The topic for the former vice president and presidential candidate (1968): How We Can Make Our Government Work, during his appearance at Kansas State University.

The Landon Lecture Series has welcomed three sitting presidents – George W. Bush, Ronald Reagan and Richard Nixon -- and welcomed more than 165 speakers since Humphrey’s appearance in 1970 to include politicians, world leaders and business leaders. Manhattan features multiple historical links from its inception in 1855 when abolitionists fought to ensure Kansas would enter statehood as a free state.

One half-century later, Theodore Roosevelt greeted supporters at the Manhattan train depot. Stay tuned to K-State.edu/landon for updates to the speakers’ schedule.

At Riley County Historical Museum, an ongoing exhibit with timely reference to the Big Red One, is Riley County during World War I. The exhibit’s run will extend through Veterans Day 2018 celebrations and the 100th anniversary of Armistice Day. Did you know, 1,009 Riley County citizens served in the Great War? Chronicles of the prairie grasslands’ evolution unfold daily at Flint Hills Discovery Center. WWI Memorial Stadium was dedicated just last spring, and a wall at City Hall was recently dedicated to the fallen of WWII. Ties with Fort Riley are celebrated regularly here in Manhattan. Veterans Day celebrations filled Military Relations Committee calendar

December’s Military Relations Committee (MRC) Lunch kicked off the holiday month with guest speaker COL John Lawrence, Fort Riley Garrison Commander. COL Lawrence gave a Garrison Update focusing on the many projects and efforts the Garrison team carries out to keep Fort Riley running efficiently.

MRC members made over $500 in cash donations and generously donated at least the same amount, if not more, to Fort Riley’s Operation Santa. MRC Military Community Liaison, Janet Nichols and MRC Executive Committee Chair Rich Jankovich also said farewell and presented a small gift on behalf of the MRC to our Junction City counterpart, COL(Ret) John Seitz, who retired after 6 years as Director of the Junction City Military Affairs Council. Best of luck to John in his well-deserved retirement!
