Business Advocacy Committee formation

Enhanced advocacy on behalf of Chamber membership will be the primary focus of the new Business Advocacy Committee, which will form in 2017.

Back in January, the Chamber Board formed a task force to investigate multiple Chambers nationwide, and develop the model of advocacy that worked to forward Manhattan Chamber’s legislative agenda. Eight months of data was studied by the task force, and a final recommendation was presented to the Board in September.

The nine-member Business Advocacy Committee will be chosen through an application process, comprised of Chamber members in good standing, and with sponsorship by a Board member. Elected officials are not eligible for the committee, but will be allowed to present on topics. All applicants will be interviewed by a committee that consists of the current chair (Kristin Brighton), past chair (Lucy Williams), chair elect (Jim Gordon) and Chamber president Lyle Butler, with the sitting committee chair included.

Appointments consist of three-year terms (two term maximum). The committee will meet twice monthly, with mandatory attendance at two-thirds of meetings required. Questions about the Business Advocacy Committee should be directed to Butler (lyle@manhattan.org). Flying high into MHK with airport expansion

Exciting, new changes are on the runway at Manhattan Regional Airport, and the expanded space with added terminal have clearance for takeoff as we greet 2017. The rapid ascent of customer services available at the airport will be clearly evident. The expanded terminal triples available passenger space, and Phase II of expansion includes a carousel system that according to MHK Airport Director Jesse Romo is “the same as you would find at most commercial service airports”.

Celebrate the holiday at McCain

Kansas native Melissa Etheridge swings into Manhattan Dec. 18 to play holiday classics along with her own legendary hits. Etheridge’s soulful ballads and national popularity trace back to the early ‘90s, and her commercial success has built long-lasting memories for fans of her raspy lyrics. Tickets start at $35 for Etheridge’s holiday performance at McCain Auditorium.

• Get charged up for the remainder of the 2016-17 McCain season in January, as Air Supply hits the stage Jan. 19 with its classic love ballads that will take you back in time.

• Mamma Mia has become a beloved Broadway hit, with Greek-island setting and powerfully-timeless ABBA music.Your chance to rejoice like a “Dancing Queen” is Jan. 24.

Phase I of the airport reconstruction first opened in March 2015 and consisted of the 13,000-square-foot terminal building to replace the aging, original structure. Now, Phase II will open the last week of December, to include baggage carousel system and expanded rental car options with a dedicated space. Negotiations continue for retail food service options. Security areas will expand with two gates and two jet bridges.

Romo assures passengers will see a continuance of amenities as with the first terminal opening, with adequate space for technology capacity and expanded lounge space.

It’s a whole, new world for passengers traveling to Manhattan through the airport.

IMAX experience open for biz in December

Blockbusters on the big screen. Fabulous films in the eloquent grandeur of dine-in theater seating. An unsurpassed movie-going experience.Very soon, the next big Manhattan draw will throw its doors open to movie lovers at Manhattan Town Center. The much-anticipated IMAX theater and 13-screen multiplex is scheduled to open Dec. 16, and will provide even more night-time attractions for tourists and residents alike.

Five of the 13 new cinemas have dine-in features, and the IMAX screen will add Manhattan to the list of Kansas cities with an IMAX theater, which include Hutchinson, Leawood and Wichita. The first major film that will hit screens in Manhattan and is sure to have quite a build-up: “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” released in U.S. theaters on Dec. 16.

K-State basketball greets big-name opponents

The 29th season at Bramlage Coliseum will see big-name basketball opponents pose tough, December opposition for the K-State Wildcats. There are no bigger names on the college basketball landscape than the Connecticut Huskies women’s team, coached by Geno Auriemma. The Huskies arrive Sunday, Dec. 11, with four consecutive national championships in tow. Ticket sales, while brisk, haven’t quite sold out for the game.

For the men, few league opponents draw the attention of K-State fans quite like the Texas Longhorns. For the first time in the league’s 21 years, Big 12 play opens in December, as the Wildcats play host to Texas on Dec. 30. Including that date on a Friday evening, K-State men’s schedule includes four consecutive weekend games, and five of the first six weekend games on the conference slate fall on weekends. The only exception, Tennessee in the Big 12-SEC Challenge on Jan. 28 in Knoxville. Check k-statesports.com for details on ticket packages.

December conferences in Manhattan

Welcome the Prescribed Fire Summit and Changing Fire Regimes as they meet at Manhattan Conference Center later this week, to discuss the future of fire and added components such as fire and weather. Statewide ranchers, firefighters and extension agents are among the usual attendees to the fire summit. The three-day session is expected to draw around 300 people to Manhattan for the conference.

Manhattan welcomed Kansas farm Bureau to town Dec. 4-6 with 1,000 members in attendance, as well as the U.S. Corps of Engineers hosted a district meeting of 35 earlier this month.

Pearl Harbor remembrance at Peace Memorial

Manhattan’s 75th annual remembrance of Pearl Harbor Day will be held at 7 p.m. Dec. 7 at Peace Memorial Auditorium, with a brief history of the attack and music program.

Donations will be accepted for improvement to Peace Memorial foyer and stage, and the 101 Riley County men who died in World War II. The music program includes Cadence, K-State Trio, Thundering Cats, Jammin’ Northstars and Northview School Choir.

Veterans Day the MRC highlight of busy November

November is always a busy time for the Manhattan Military Relations Committee. With the annual Veterans Day commemoration, multiple events are held in November, and 2016 it seemed as though a year’s worth of ceremonies and events amassed in two short weeks.

One hundred twenty people attended our monthly MRC luncheon. Museum archivist Jonathan R. Casey presented on the National World War I Museum and Memorial in Kansas City, and the First Infantry Division history and role in the Great War. MRC cohosted a pregame tailgate for the annual Military Appreciation Day at K-State’s Nov. 15 football game, with Fort Riley soldiers and families and veterans from surrounding areas. The halftime show featured the First Infantry Division Band as it played alongside the Pride of Wildcat Land Marching Band.

Veterans Day is always a big deal in Manhattan, and 2016 did not disappoint! Beautiful weather greeted parade goers who cheered 93 student groups, marching bands, veterans and veterans’ organizations in the parade to Manhattan City Hall. It was one of the largest Veterans Day Parades for Manhattan, as 3,000-plus people participated. Newly appointed Executive Director of the Governor’s Military Council LTG (Ret) Perry Wiggins spoke at a commemorative program that followed the parade in Peace Memorial Auditorium.

The Little Apple Brigade hosted the 32nd annual Little Apple Brigade Ball Nov. 12 at Manhattan Country Club. The Brigade encourage and foster interaction between Manhattan and Fort Riley. Last week, MRC cohosted and cosponsored dinner and a tour of the training facility at the K-State men’s basketball game against Wisconsin-Green Bay. Numerous MRC members and Fort Riley newcomers also enjoyed the game at Bramlage Coliseum.

The year’s last MRC luncheon features Dr. Briana Nelson-Goff, director of K-State’s Institute for the Health and Security of Military Families. She’ll discuss the Institute’s research, outreach and academic and clinical service programs that are designed to identify and address the complex effects of wartime service on long-term health and well-being of American veterans, military personnel and families.
