Lunchmeat & Life Lessons: Sharing a Butcher’s Wisdom
A publication of the Manhattan Area Chamber of Commerce
by Mary B. Lucas, B.D.
John Bichelmeyer dispensed much more than ground beef and bacon to his customers. A man with only an eighth-grade education and father of 10 children, he offered rare wisdom and compassion to his clientele, friends and family that came from the heart. Now his daughter, Mary B. Lucas, B.D., tells the story of how she earned her B.D. (which stands for "butcher's daughter") by spending hours at the butcher-block table in the family kitchen, listening to her father's stories about how he achieved success by making deep connections with the people around him. In turn, Mary used her father's advice to find the passion and perseverance to rise to the top of the staffing industry.

Kansas Department of Commerce Names Business Appreciation Month Winners
The Kansas Department of Commerce designates June as Business Appreciation Month, a celebration of Kansas businesses and their contributions to local communities and the state economy. Businesses can be nominated by any individual or organization.
Four Manhattan Area Chamber of Commerce member businesses were recognized this year in one of four categories: Service, Manufacturing/Distribution, Hospital/Non-Profit and Retail.
Merit Award winners included Tallgrass Brewing Company in Manufacturing/Distribution, Crisis Center, Inc. in Hospital/Non-Profit and Kansas Kollection in Retail. The 2016 Governor’s Award of Excellence – the state’s top honor – went to CivicPlus in Service.
The Chamber of Commerce congratulates the nominated businesses and thanks all of our area businesses for their hard work, time and effort. Local businesses add life to our community. They create jobs, drive economic growth and provide the goods and services that we often take for granted. Thank you area businesses for making the Manhattan area a great place to live and do business.
Great American Defense Honor
Manhattan and Junction City have been recognized as a singular Great American Defense community – representing the Flint Hills Region – and are part of the 10-member inaugural class of honorees from the Association of Defense Communities (ADC). The award touts communities’ unwavering support to service members and military families, and will now be presented annually. Janet Nichols represented Manhattan Area Chamber of Commerce’s Military Relations Committee at a June reception on Capitol Hill, where an exhibit recognizes the community’s distinction. Colorado Springs, Colo., Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., and Lawton, Okla., were additional recipients of the award.
“All 10 of our inaugural class of honorees truly embodied the ideals this initiative was designed to celebrate, making host communities for our nation’s military installations ‘Great Places to Call Home,’” said the ADC’s Tim Ford.
(L to R) Award recipients and Commerce staff: Jeff Gill, Tallgrass Brewing Company; Connie Casper, CivicPlus; Brian Rempe, CivicPlus; Lyle Peterson, Kansas Department of Commerce; Karen Streeter, Kansas Kollection; Judy Davis, Crisis Center.
