Purple Power Play on Poyntz!

Nothing kicks off fall quite like our exciting community- wide Purple Power Play on Poyntz. This event, held August 30-31, celebrates the start of K-State’s fall semester and a successful football season. More than 20,000 attend this event in its two-day duration.

With light shows, an inflatable carnival, tons of family activities and community-wide excitement, this is an event you don’t want to miss.

Wear your purple and come on down to Poyntz Avenue!

Upcoming Events Still time for a Summer Camp Experience

Gold Wing Road Riders

Curious what it’s like for your kids at summer camp? Rock Springs offers Family Camp, where the whole family can experience camp life. Openings are available for August 1012 and Aug. 31-Sept. 2. Children under 7 are free! Visit rocksprings.net to fill out a form, or call 785-257-3221 with questions.

The Manhattan Convention & Visitors Bureau welcomes the Goldwing Road Riders Association to Manhattan August 23-25th headquartered at the Clarion Hotel!

Calling All Hunters and Jumpers!

The Wells Arena in CiCo Park will host the Flint Hills Pony Club Hunter Jumper Show. The show runs August 11-12 and is a part of the Kansas Hunter Jumper Association (KHJA) show series. This fund-raising event is open to all hunters and jumpers, no membership required. Call 785-477-4836 with questions.

McCain is going bib!

A friend of Kansas and the Flint Hills, Lyle Lovett and His Large Band kicks off the McCain performance Series at 7:30 pm on Sunday, August 26.

With Texas swing, blues, gospel, jazz and more, this show will capture the essence of Texas and might inspire you to ride off on a horse into the sunset.

GWRRA was founded in 1977, and has grown to more than 72,000 U.S., Canadian and international members in 53 countries. There are currently 800 active chapters and nearly 4,000 volunteer leaders who work with GWRRA to promote safe, enjoyable riding while also working to improve the public image of motorcycling.

The Gold Wing Road Riders Association is the world’s largest single-marque social organization for owners and riders of Honda Gold Wing/Valkyrie motorcycles.

Once you join GWRRA, you can participate with as many Chapters as you choose. You decide your own level of involvement and time. Wherever you go, wherever you travel, you're welcomed. GWRRA membership opens doors to friendship everywhere you ride! Monthly Chapter get-togethers (often light-hearted exchanges of information at a breakfast location) are pleasant, social occasions. There are no expectations, riding requirements, elections, politics, required uniforms or Chapter dues.

While staying in Manhattan the Gold Wing Road Riders will be doing a light parade for Meadowlark Hills on August 24th at 9:00 pm. The public is invited to attend.

The Manhattan Convention & Visitors Bureau assisted this group in a vast site inspection, bid proposal, and organization of the light parade; offering welcome materials and providing a city welcome upon arrival in Manhattan.

I Love Manhattan Triathlon

We appreciate that the Gold Wing Road Riders Association are selecting Manhattan as their meeting destination – wave hello when you see them!

It starts at the River Pond Campground at Tuttle Creek State Park; taking participants through 750 meters of swim, 20 km of bike, and 5 km of run throughout the park; it’s Manhattan’s newest triathlon! The race is August 19 and begins at 7:00 am.

There is a $60 entrance fee, ($90 relay) and an additional $12 fee for non USAT members.

You can get registration forms at Big Poppi Bicycle Co, or head to ozendurance.net! No registrations allowed on race day.

There’s a Snake in My Boot!

The Konza Reptile Breeder’s Expo is coming up again- September 2 from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm. You can check out all the creatures that make your skin crawl! Learn about reptiles, see them up close, and ask the vendors any questions you’ve always wanted to know before taking home that bearded dragon. Soldiering On For Disc Golf

Around the World in 20 Bottles

Larry Kirk is on a mission. For the second time, he will travel all 50 states in the Union playing discgolf courses the entire way. He will play more than 450 scheduled courses, plus whichever ones he picks up along the way. You can keep tabs on his progress at soldieringonfordiscgolf.com. Where his previous trip took 8 years to complete, Kirk hopes this tour will be completed entirely in 2012, landing him a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records.

Additionally, 4 players from Manhattan participated in the Sunflower Games disc golf tournament in Topeka and medaled! There were both doubles, and singles divisions and Manhattan was represented in each bracket.

Change is coming!

With fall approaching, that means pools will soon be closing for the summer. Official close date for all public pools is August 19- and then it’s back to school!

Kansas River Trail Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar and Kansas Governor Sam Brownback designated the Kansas River Water Trail as a National Water Trail on July 14. This will increase opportunities for outdoor recreation along the river and encourage community stewardship of one of the world’s longest prairie rivers.

The Kansas River joins a growing network of National waterways that exist throughout the country. This designation made the Kansas River one of nine National Water Trails designated so far. The National Park service will work with state and local partners to help provide resources improving access to the water trail, and promoting public use.

Brew At the Zoo Sunset Zoo will host Brew at the Zoo August 17th! This unique event will feature Tallgrass beer, Varsity Donuts, and Bluestem Bistro samples. Tickets are $30 and on sale now. Hungry for a Change K-State’s Movies on the Grass Series kicks off for 2012 on August 26. The film is Hungry for Change, and shows keys to good health through food.

The film features medical experts on the cutting edge of nutritional science and powerful testimonials from individuals who have been sick and overweight.

This free outdoor film series fosters discussions of current issues. Show up on the lawn in front of Hale Library, enjoy the film on an enormous screen, and discuss afterward in a relaxed setting, or just take in the debate!
