The Flint Hills Discovery Center will be open at long last; Saturday, April 14 is the big day! The staff has a plethora of activities planned and is excited to start welcoming guests through the door beginning at 10 am. Make a day of it, bring the whole family. Check the CVB web site, visitmanhattanks.org, or flinthillsdiscovery.org for updates on what is scheduled. The grand opening will be free admission to the public. Learn about the land we live on every day, and how we can help protect and preserve it.

Culture Those Good Old Days!

Just a reminder to get your tickets and enjoy Saturday, April 14 with the Little Apple Chorus at their 36th Annual Spring Show. “Bring Back the Good Old Days” will show at 2 pm and 7:30 pm in KSU’s McCain Auditorium. So Long, Farewell, Until We Meet Again April will sum up the various performance series for K-State theatre. McCain Auditorium will feature three shows in April beginning with the Yucal Ron Ensemble April 5, at 7:30 pm. The show will feature Middle Eastern music and dance.

At the end of April, Pilobolus Dance Theater will amaze audiences with their acrobatic tricks.

Catch this show Tuesday the 24th at 7:30 pm.

Finally, “The Sleeping Beauty” by the Moscow Festival Ballet will close things out with their performance on Sunday, April 29, at 4:00 pm.

That will be it for the McCain Performance Series until the fall! Visit k-state.edu/mccain for information on current and future performances, tickets, and schedules!

Nichols Theatre will close out their performance season as well, with their production of Shakespeare’s Hamlet. The shows will be April 19-21 and 25-27 at 7:30 pm, with a final showing on the 28th at 2:30 pm. Again, tickets can be found at the McCain box office, 785-532-6428 or k-state.edu/mccain

Landon Lectures with K-State The spring edition of K-State’s Landon Lecture Series will be given by U.S. Secretary of Agriculture, Tom Vilsack. The lecture will be April 10 at 10:30 am.

Vilsack guides national efforts in food safety and security, and animal health. K-State is a recognized national and international leader for research and outreach in each of these areas.

As the nation’s 30th secretary of agriculture, Vilsack’s focuses have been on “strengthening the American agricultural economy, revitalizing rural communities, protecting and conserving our natural resources and providing a safe, sufficient and nutritious food supply.”

Get Around 2 It We are all guilty of it- the phrase “I’ll get to it someday” is said by many. We think when things slow down, we’ll have time to g there. Well the Manhattan Convention and Visitors Bureau wants to help! Take advantage of the 2012 Get Around 2 It event on May 3 so you can be fully informed on what our city and surrounding communities have to offer.

There will be prizes, food and music with more than 50 attractions, organizations and hospitality businesses present to strut their stuff. Get Around 2It will provide plenty of ideas for summer fun, and might show you some attractions you didn’t even know about. Get Around to It is free! From 5-8 pm in Blue Earth Plaza outside the Flint Hills Discovery Center.

Upcoming Events Tulips Tulips Everywhere Wamego invites you to the 25th annual Tulip Festival in their City Park, downtown, and colorful gardens sprinkled throughout town!

There are more than 150 craft vendors that attend the show, selling everything from jewelry, baskets, homemade salsa, yard art and stained glass to traditional favorites like pottery, candles and soap.

In addition to handmade crafts, the festival will feature a bounce house, horseshoe tournament and much more to keep you entertained.

The festival dates are Saturday, April 14 from 9 am to 6 pm and Sunday, April 15 from 10 am to 4 pm.

Ride on the Yellow Brick Road As a part of the Tulip Festival Events in Wamego, the Cabin Fever Bike Challenge will fall on Saturday, April 14. This cycling event is open to all ages and abilities, with three different trail lengths available to riders, of 17, 29 and 64 miles.

Registration is open now, and check in for all routes starts at 7 am. This is the 8th annual event. Net Proceeds from the ride are deposited to the Wam-Sag-Man Trail Account.

Beastie Ballyhoo The Riley County Humane Society will host The Beastie Ballyhoo! On April 29 in City Park. The event runs from 2-6:00 pm, and entrance is free.

There will be food and entertainment at the event, which is designed to honor the importance of pets in the lives of children, as well as demonstrating key principles of proper and humane treatment of animals. Bring the whole family to this fun-filled day!

K-State Open House Anticipatory students, mark Saturday, April 21 on your calendar; Kansas State University is hosting their Open House from 9 am – 3 pm (Salina campus 9 am-1 pm) K-State offers 250 major options, nearly 500 campus clubs, and more than 24,000 students. This is one of K-State’s most popular traditions, bringing some 20,000 attendees.

There are tons of tours to take, demonstrations to watch, even ice-sculpting in action.

There are no reservations required for this event. Details and schedules are provided online at k-state.edu/openhouse/events. Visitors are encouraged to utilize our web site, visitmanhattanks.org to aid the planning of your trip to Manhattan for lodging, dining and other venues.

Membership Your Way is one of many ways the Flint Hills Discovery Center hopes to embrace its mission and invite community members and visitors to do the same. Kansas Association of Broadcasters Books 2013 Annual The Convention and Visitors Bureau is excited to look for the Kansas Association of Broadcasters to be in Manhattan for their 2013 annual convention. The Manhattan Conference Center and Hilton Garden Inn will host the group, who hasn’t been in Manhattan since 1999. CVB staff was actively involved with site visits, information and board presentations throughout 2011. The group will bring 300 members to Manhattan.
