Board Chair updates on public affairs By: Kristin Brighton, 2016 Board Chair

As the chair of the 2016 board of directors, I’ve set five goals for our board to focus on this year:

1. Better prepare the region to take advantage of economic development opportunities; 2. Determine the role of regional chambers in combatting workforce shortages; 3. Assess the Chamber’s philosophy toward legislative advocacy, and determine whether we want to maintain, increase, or decrease our advocacy efforts on the local, state, and federal levels; 4. Continue to develop and strengthen our inter-city visit program; and 5. Close a deal by the end of 2016 with a private developer to get the Welcome Center at the corner of I-70 and Highway 177 built, or abandon the idea.

This month I’d like to update you on the progress we’ve made in assessing our legislative advocacy program. At our January board meeting, it was moved and approved that we split the existing public affairs committee into two groups, with the current committee focusing on state and federal legislative activity, and a new group focusing exclusively on city, county and school-board issues.

In February, I appointed a task force to tackle this topic and

make recommendations to the board this summer. Past chair Lucy Williams is leading the group, which includes current public affairs committee chair Lisa Sisley, Randy Martin, Randy Anderes, Stacy Kohlmeier, Rich Seidler, Linda Cook, Dan Yunk, Sue Petersen, John Armbrust, Bob Shannon and Dick Carter, our contract lobbyist. I chose these people because of their past experiences in the Chamber and their personal or professional involvement in public advocacy and government. All of them have served our Chamber and community in the past, either as public officials, on the current public affairs committee, or on our board of directors in some capacity.

My directive to this group is to look at:

• The make up of both committees, including whether selection criteria should be established to shape the balance and number of its members.

• The name of the committees and how frequently they should meet.

• Which committee should handle issues that fall in the gray area between state and federal or state and local, and how to tackle issues that impact local government but are the result of decisions made at a higher-level of government.

• Whether elected or appointed public officials can or should serve on either committee.

• The role of both committees in developing the Chamber’s Legislative Policies and Procedures document.

• How to improve communication between the public affairs committees and the full board of directors.

As we make decisions to shape our public advocacy program moving forward, this task force is keenly aware that our members fall on both sides of the political aisle. However, given today’s political climate and all of the local changes on the horizon with the National Bio and Agro-defense Facility (NBAF) coming in a few years, we feel it’s our responsibility as a Chamber to fight for Manhattan’s best interests at every level of government.

I’m confident in this task force’s ability to balance these concerns as they make their recommendations to our board later this year. Dip in your paddle, take in Reel Paddling films

Take a break from the ordinary and let your adventurous side take over at the Reel Paddling Film Festival. This year’s event is the second Manhattan foray into the bold and daring life of paddle enthusiasts, with an April 15 event staged at Flint Hills Discovery Center.

These films are a small, Midwest sampling of the entire collection of Reel Paddling films. The RPFF showcases paddle excursions and the splendor that drives the sport’s enthusiasm. The 2016 World Tour makes its second stop in Manhattan. This year's 7 p.m. showing at the Immersive Theatre Experience

in the Flint Hills Discovery Center is the exclusive Kansas showing of the films ($5 advance tickets; $10 at the door).

An added bonus to the Friday films: a Little Apple Paddle trip from Junction City to Manhattan. This Saturday and Sunday navigation of the Kansas River (part of the National Water Trail) is brought to you by Visit Manhattan in conjunction with Kansas Wildlife, Parks and Tourism and Manhattan Parks and Recreation Department.

Rooted in Purple: K-State Open House

Join 20,000 family friends for a K-State family tradition that continues on Saturday, April 16, with the 48th annual Open House campus event. Rooted in Purple is the theme for 2016, as campus-wide events converge and current Wildcats host the community as well as future Wildcats.

Take a peek into living the Wildcat Way, as student-hosted demonstrations continue throughout the day beginning at 9 a.m.

Explore more than 250 majors and options, and 475 campus activities.

Enrollment statistics show steady progression toward K-State 2025 goals. For instance, the College of Engineering enrollment increased 1 percent to 3,666 undergrads, which is well on pace to exceed state requirements for University Engineering Initiative Act (3,750 students by 2023, 98 percent to goal).

K-State traditionally welcomes 20,000 visitors to campus during Open House to enjoy the carnival of academic exhibits, entertainment, food and fun. This annual spring event traces its roots back nearly 90 years ago for events such as Home Economics Hospitality Day, Engineer’s Open House and Ag Day. The first all-university Open House was held in 1969, and today is one of the most popular K-State traditions.

Take heed of Konza Prairie rules

Konza Prairie is a treasure to behold. Nature at its most dazzling … sensory overload to gaze upon the land and its creatures, smell the clean, fresh air like an amalgamation of fruits released atmospherically.

Amazing as the wide, open grasslands are as sightseers, its main purposes remains unchanged: that of a research station. We’re fortunate to have access to this vast expanse of great, private prairie grasslands – of which 4 percent remain -- right outside our doorstep. All the more reason to take extreme care and follow the few, very general rules established by the Konza Prairie Biological Station (through the K-State Biology Department), caretakers of the land.

These are important, if public access is to be continued.

Consider a visit as if you would to another person’s domestic home, where you’re at the will of their rules, quirky or otherwise. The research area is open to the public, dawn to dusk.

Prohibitions include: • Straying from designated roads and trails • Collection or removal of any materials: flowers, feathers, rocks • Smoking, to include buildings and vehicles (any open flame) • Disposal receptacles and picnic areas not available and not to be improvised on the trail • Hiking only; no bicycles/motorcycles • Camping or overnight parking • Dogs and horses

Ed Chartrand Memorial tournament

This year marks the 38th annual Ed Chartrand Memorial Soccer tournament at Memorial Stadium, as it coincides with K-State Open House, April 16-17. The tournament has held both men’s and women’s tournaments since 2000, and the Chartrand Charitable Foundation annually funds $500 male/female scholarships to K-State representatives. The scholarship is traditionally awarded at the annual tournament by a member of the Chartrand Family.

Manhattan Invitational Tournament

Anneberg Park will play host to the second annual Manhattan Invitational Tournament for lower-level premier and recreational soccer teams (Division 3 through 8, boys and girls). GSI Sports is the promoter for the tournament, April 29 to May 1. GSI promoter Huw Savage expects between 60 to 80 teams for the weekend tournament, which could draw around 1,500 soccer players and parents to Manhattan. This will be a great event to fill our hotels two weeks prior to a packed K-State graduation weekend.

It’s time again for Get Around To It! Eighty degree days. Flowers blooming. 8 o’clock sunsets.

All sure signs of spring … the third week of spring, actually. Another sign of spring? The annual Get Around 2 It! event in Blue Earth Plaza, hosted May 5 by Manhattan Convention and Visitors Bureau with Manhattan Parks and Recreation.

This is the eighth year for Get Around 2 It! Invite friends, family and area visitors to make the rounds and visit with 40-plus vendors, and simply learn about all the exciting things to do around Manhattan. When you host out-of-town visitors, these fun, group activities visitors may seek out.

Ideas for fun, summer events at Flint Hills Discovery Center and Sunset Zoo. Reps from the Pathfinder to help you find the right bike to fit your outdoor pleasures and even paddling adventures. And many, many more. You’ll find plenty to fill your summer calendar, for both kids and parents alike!

National Volunteer Week

“One of these days, I’ll get around to it.” That day is here on May 5, beginning at 5 p.m.

The Manhattan Convention & Visitors Bureau is active – and our success is complimented by the volunteers that assist us with activities throughout the year. The Little Apple Corps volunteers during 2015 worked 239 hours, or the equivalent of nearly six weeks! During the 2A basketball tournament we depend on nearly 200 volunteers to assist us in various jobs to host a successful event.

The Tulip Festival is the centerpiece for April 16-17 events in Wamego, with food vendors, carriage rides, petting zoo, rock climbing and live entertainment. The Cabin Fever Challenge bicycle ride is another, an 8 a.m. April 16 event. Entry fee is $45 for this ride, with 13-, 35- and 50mile distances (75-100 riders are expected). CONGRATULATIONS TO THE FLINT HILLS!

The Association of Defense Communities (ADC) links communities, states, the military and the private sector on four major issues: Community-Military Collaboration, Installation Change, Public/ Private Partnerships and Military Families/Veterans.

Beginning this year, ADC will recognize up to 10 communities annually that go above and beyond to support service members and military family quality of life through the Great American Defense Community program (GADC). The program is intended to recognize the efforts of communities, big and small, that improve quality of life for service members, veterans and their families.

The Manhattan Military Relations Committee (MRC) is proud to announce the Kansas Flint Hills Region as a member of the inaugural class of Great American Defense Communities. Through local and national press events, exhibits and recognition during ADC events, selected GADC communities will be held up as an example of how communities support our nation’s military men and women.

The Flint Hills Region and the other nine 2016 recipients will be recognized at the Defense Communities National Summit in Washington DC this June.

Why You Need to Grow Your Personal Brand and It’s Not to Land a New Job

Business owners are as guilty as they come. Because they have their own businesses they rarely see a reason to build out things like their LinkedIn profiles. “I’m not looking for a job,” is a common response when asked why they don’t have one.

But in today’s uber-competitive business climate, where even mom and pops are potentially competing on a global level, it’s more important than ever to be able to differentiate your business, and yourself, from the competition. This is done through personal branding.

Welcome to the World of Publishing Like it or not, social media has given us all big platforms. If you’re not building, refining, and using yours, you’re missing an opportunity to connect with your potential customers. A business owner who’s not sharing insight about the industry, or the product she sells, will just be one of the many.

While you don’t need to write a book, you do need to publish content through your website and social media.

Producing helpful resources is one of the most effective ways of differentiating yourself from your competition.

Be an Expert I’ve worked with a lot of business owners who are afraid to “publish” their thoughts. Most of them built their businesses through hard work, not philosophical musings, so making that switch from business owner to thought leader is a large jump. However, that jump is a necessary one if you want your business to continue to grow somewhere other than your local neighborhood.

People do business with people they know, like, and trust.

They have to know you’re out there to buy from you.

If you are simply the man behind the curtain, no one will identify with you and you will look like every other vanilla business out there. While some people like vanilla, very few LOVE it. Don’t be vanilla.

To improve your connection to your target audience, create content that allows people to get to know you and solves their problems. The days of hard sell are done. Engaging the customer through content and conversations that educate and entertain will become the new, unique value proposition for most successful companies operating in the digital age.

Two-thirds of Americans are expected to be available for out-of-office work consultation in some form, typically phone and email, and one might determine that has had a diminishing effect on volunteer time. Yet 35 percent of Kansas residents volunteer, and that amounts to nearly three-quarters of a million people (733,000), which amounts to 70 million hours of service. The hourly value of a volunteer continues to rise ($23/hour from 2014 statistical data), a nearly $6 increase over a decade earlier.

Studies are beginning to show that altruistic behavior is tied to lower stress levels, and incredibly that the social connections achieved through volunteer activities make for a heightened immune system. Next week here at the Manhattan Area Chamber of Commerce, we observe National Volunteer Week (April 10-16). Many organizations benefit from the assistance of volunteers, and the Chamber received immeasurable assistance from people in the Manhattan community.

It’s about demonstrating to the nation that by working together, we have the fortitude to meet our challenges and accomplish our goals.”
