A Salute to Ours Who Have Served Capt. Jared P. Belliveau 1997 | USN November 11, 2020

MC graduates have a long and proud tradition of service to our nation’s Armed Forces. We read in the Old Testament that Isaiah heard the voice of the Lord saying “whom shall I send, and who will go for us?" Isaiah replied, "Here I am, send me." Just as Isaiah answered God’s plea, for our entire history as a nation, citizens from every walk of life, of every stripe and color, and from every background, have stepped forward, raised their hand and taken an oath to bear true faith and allegiance. Those of us who are called veterans have had the privilege of answering our nation’s call. Today, there are just over 18 million Americans who distinguish themselves in uniform. Their devotion and sacrifice have been the bedrock of our sovereignty as a nation, our values as a people, and our security as a democracy. All of these veterans promised us and our country, what God promised Joshua, I will not fail thee or forsake thee. On Veteran’s Day, we honor every man and woman who has ever worn the uniform of our nation. Those who have selflessly secured the promise of America’s future throughout our history. So what mysterious tangles of motivations leads a man or woman to answer a calling of military service? What is it that tells them to put

themselves in harm’s way and live the loneliness of military life? The whole mysterious calling comes down to one word, love. For only love of country and freedom will compel us to write that blank check to our country for up to and including our life. But love is only one emotion felt on this day, a day filled with many emotions. For some it is about reflection and sadness for losing a loved one. For others, it is a time of fond memories of times passed with our closest comrades. And for many, it is as simple as feeling a sense of pride and service and sacrifice for a great country and a great cause. What makes this day special for me, is that it is a yearly reminder for me to ask myself, am I worthy? History teaches us that security does just not happen. It demands effort, courage, commitment, and sacrifice. It requires a generation, generations of men and women, willing to go to distant lands and to put their lives on the line. Am I worthy, are we worthy of the sacrifice that they endured for our freedom? During World War II, Eleanor Roosevelt frequently recited a prayer that pondered this very question: "Dear Lord, lest I continue in my complacent ways, help me to remember that somewhere someone died for me today. And if there be war, help me to remember to ask, "Am I worth dying for?"

I can only imagine what it must have been like to be on a B-17 over England during World War II. Those airman knew there was no place to hide in the skies above Europe, but they went anyway. They knew that the odds that over half of them would not survive their first tour. But they went anyway. They knew that bravery didn’t mean that you weren’t scared, it meant that you went anyway. And so, I have to ask, am I worthy? Are we worthy? By their very actions, those that we honor today seemed to think so, and that is good enough for me. So today, I am privileged enough to wear the cloth of our nation on honor of those who have gone before me and those who serve today. We also remember that honoring those who served isn’t just about what we say here today, it is about how we honor our veterans every day of the year. It’s t remaining committed to the and their families in every way that we possibly can, it is about us serving them as well as they serve and continue to serve our nation. We keep in our thoughts and our prayers the fallen, the missing, and those who are right now in harms way. May God bless them, and may God bless our nation.

A Prayer for Veterans Catholic Digest

Father, bless our veterans and all who serve our nation defending our freedom. For those who bravely gave their lives, grant them eternal rest. For those who are serving, give them courage. For those who served, we offer our gratitude. We ask this through Christ Our Lord. Amen.
